Abstract

Borexino has been a neutrino detector based on ultrapure liquid scintillator, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. Its main scientific goal was the real-time measurement of solar neutrino fluxes, which play an irreplaceable role for the comprehension of the mechanisms powering our star. Over the past two years, the Borexino collaboration has pursued the improvement of the CNO flux measurement, obtaining further indications about the solar metallicity. In a parallel way, Borexino has demonstrated for the first time the possibility of exploiting the directional Cherenkov information, in a liquid scintillator detector, for the detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos. Abstract

Borexino was a liquid scintillator detector situated underground in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, officially decommissioned in October 2021. Its successful and renowned physics program covered the study of solar neutrinos program and spans also across geo-neutrinos and neutrino physics. Within its solar program, Borexino successfully measured neutrinos from the fusion processes in the pp chain and CNO cycle. For the detection of pep and CNO neutrinos, an especially important background is formed by the cosmogenic radio-isotope 11C that is produced by muon spallation of 12C nuclei in the scintillator. Given the relatively long lifetime (30 mins) and high rate (30 cpd per 100 ton), specific signal identification is not possible. Borexino developed dedicated veto strategies in the data analysis phase to allow the detection of pep and CNO neutrinos. The results presented so far by Borexino relied upon a Three-Fold Coincidence (TFC) technique that exploits the time and space correlation of muons, spallation neutrons, and radioactive 11C decays. This method has conservative assumptions during critical data-taking periods, such as during a board saturation case or between runs, which causes a loss of data exposure. Therefore, a new algorithm is devised to relax these TFC assumptions and deal with the critical periods by searching for space-time correlated bursts of 11C events produced in cascade by the spallation. In this work, we present the state of the art of the TFC, the new algorithm working, and highlight the performance of their combination to deal with the 11C background. Moreover, this method finds a general application in low radioactivity Borexino-like underground experiments when dealing with any background having a decay time too long to be identified by the triggers. Abstract

One of the main factors influencing the accuracy of the obtained lumber is the rigidity and stability of saws. In the process of sawing woodcutting tools heated. This phenomenon can cause a loss of rigidity and stability of saws. A log frames and band saws negative influence of heating can be compensated the additional tension and setting directing. Particular importance is the heating of circular saws due to the appearance of a temperature gradient along the radius in the process of sawing wood. Upon reaching the temperature gradient along the radius of the disk the critical value, it may lose stability of elastic equilibrium and sawing will be impossible. One way to increase the thermal stability of circular saws is creation of the initial tension by various methods, which are not fully solving the problem. Also reduce the influence of temperature gradient on the stability of saws can be increasing of their thickness, which increases power inputs on sawing and the volume of received filings. There are various ways of supply water to peripheral portion of the saw, but they have some significant disadvantages which complicate their use. Proposed to use for cooling of circular saws aerostatic directing. Due to a dramatic expansion of air around saw can be achieving a reduction of temperatures gradient. In metallurgy extensively used various jet systems for cooling and heating the metal. Existing research in metallurgy cannot be applied to the aerostatic directing because of significant differences in their design and parameters. Abstract

The article is devoted to the improvement of circular saw machines with pneumatic drive of cutting mechanism. Currently, circular saws are widely used for producing of sawn timber because they have high productivity. The drive of saw blades more often is carried out by electric motors through additional transmission (gear, belt, etc.). In the recent literature are offered technical solutions, in which as a drive of circular saws provided by using of pneumatic. Energy source interacts with the circular saw will allow to decrease the temperature gradient along the radius of disk, and hence reduce the thickness of blade and increase its output of finished product. The article shows the definition of ring-shaped saws, which are looked as toothed rim of circular saw, mounted on a support, with feed of processing material through the central part of the saw. On machines with ring-shaped saws compared to conventional circular saw blades can be processed large-diameter logs. Schematic diagram and description of the circular sawing machine pneumatically driven ring-shaped saws are shown. In viewed design the platter, side guides and air duct with nozzles, which form a closed profile of rectangular cross section to prevent the outflow of air in the radial direction of the saw to the environment, guiding him along the vector cutting speed. Ring-shaped saw is driven by jets of compressed air flowing out of the air duct with nozzles and directed to the rear surface of the saw teeth. In the illustrated construction of circular saw is provided the use of aerostatic supports on the saw side guides and on the platter. Aerostatic supports on the saw side guides allow increasing rigidity and stability of saws and cutting accuracy and quality. Improving efficiency of the circular saw pneumatic drive can be achieved by changing the design of the rear of the saw teeth. Abstract

Carrying capacity of heavy vehicles used for timber transportation tends to increase in the modern world. This tendency brings to an accelerated damage of the roads. The fleet of trucks used for timber transportation has become quite diverse. Modern vehicles differ from standard trucks in a number of characteristics, for example, weight. New vehicle features affect the strain-stress state of the road structure. This influence is taken into account in the process of calculation of total load equivalency factor. Load equivalency factor is an essential parameter for the assessment of the effect of heavy vehicles on the roads. Research conducted previously concluded that forest roads with ground and gravel surfaces are not suitable for overloads of 110–150 kN per axle. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the load equivalency factor for the vehicles heavier than traditional ones. The aim of this research is to study the impact of heavy vehicles on the roads with the use of total load equivalency factor. Our calculation process includes the study of documentation derived from operating production enterprises. The most appropriate approach for the calculation of the load equivalency factor has been chosen. This article presents the results of calculation of the load equivalency factor of concept truck-trains. Abstract

The article provides general information on the certification processes at logging and wood working enterprises, shows the dynamics of the certification processes of forest management and chain of custody. The main factors affecting the certification of logging and woodworking processes are the retention and expansion of markets for forest products, increase of the certified products' price, and the pursuit of sustainable forest management. Changes in priorities in the development of forest certification is demonstrated by the example of "Solombala sawmill and woodworking plant" (Arkhangelsk, Russia). Types of certification costs, including preparation for certification, certification audits, the cost for selection of high conservation value forests, the study of flora and fauna, monitoring, preservation of rare and endangered species of plants and animals and any other expenses necessary for an objective assessment of the economic benefits from certification of logging and woodworking enterprises are considered. For certification of the leased forest areas an agreement with stakeholders is required. The valuation of specific certification costs of the supply chain of "Solombala sawmill and woodworking plant" and certification costs of forest management of two logging companies JSC "Svetlozerskles" and LLC "Toymales" is done. A 5 years' period of time being accepted for the valuation, the full list of events of the certification process (preparation of enterprise, preliminary, main, control audits, etc.) is included into it and all actual costs for the certification of forest management and chain of custody are considered. The article describes General information about monitoring certification processes at the enterprises of the forest industry, which is an effective mechanism of modern enterprise management. Presents information about the carrying out of certification processes at the enterprises of the holding Solombalales. A scheme of supply of wood raw materials in holdings of JSC Solombala Sawmill and Woodworking Plant and JSC Solombala Pulp-and-Paper Mill. The article considers the choice of the audit company during the tender. Presents possible stakeholders involved in the certification process. Considered the improvement of the forest management certification processes that is connected with preservation of high conservation value forests. One of the options for the saving of high conservation value forests is the allocation of moratorium areas, including strict conservation zones and buffer zones. Non-governmental environmental organizations are reducing the allowable cut, corresponding to the allocated moratorium zones. Monitoring chronological date allows you to plan the volume of certified products and timely reveal shortcomings in the planning of certification processes in time. Underestimation of the monitoring certification processes may lead to the revocation or suspension of a certificate, and ultimately to large financial losses and loss of company image. Specified number of changes in the method of certification audits associated with the improvement of certification. Are the findings related to monitoring of certification processes. The findings indicated on unequivalent assessment of three aspects of the enterprise: environmental, social and economic, as the auditors are mostly specialists of the environmental unit. Abstract

References to theoretical research of aerostatic bearings and the method of their analysis for choosing options of aerostatic direction are provided. The calculation is done by means of a numerical method based on the field pressure approximation in a gap by means of differential algebraic equations, which takes into account two-dimensionality of the lubrication flow in bearings of various configuration and gives results close to actual ones. With the assumptions made in order to simplify calculations, flow line deviations from the direction perpendicular to fine grooves, when the gap is increasing and when the fine groove cross-section is decreasing, are not taken into consideration, as well as inertial forces in the lubrication flow and the air motion in the groove is taken to be laminar. The scheme of aerostatic bearings with the set parameters, which are the width and the length, is shown. The bearing section includes a closed rectangular fine groove, in the middle part of the lateral sides of which there are ventilation holes. The isolated aerostatic bearing is gridded with the spacing. A special mathematical software for calculating aerostatic bearings was applied to develop a program. In experimental studies in order to evaluate the impact of the sealing grooves on the carrying capacity of aerostatic bearings an aerostatic bearing with certain parameters was taken. The scheme of the working surface of the aerostatic bearings with sealing groove and the layout of aerostatic bearings test bed are shown. The air system of the experimental setup includes a compressor, air manifold consisting of rubber pressure hoses; demister for evacuating mechanical impurities and humidity; needle air valve for air pressure adjustment built in the area variable flow-meter and gas pressure gauge. For experimental studies the electronic variable area flow meter, which has a number of advantages compared to the flow meter with a glass tube, was used. The device description and principle of the flat aerostatic bearings test bed function is shown. In the course of the experimental research grooves of 4 different profiles have been studied. The results of the experimental research have shown different plate lift heights for grooves of different profiles. The research results were taken to draw a conclusion: with all conditions being equal, the maximum plate lift height is reached by an aerostatic bearing of a teardrop profile, which corresponds to the maximum lifting capacity of the aerostatic bearing. Abstract

The study of issues related to the cost of production of biofuel deals with most modern countries. The cost of fuel is one of the most important indicators in the production of various types of energy. The cost of production of biofuels from wood is affected by many factors. Constant components of the cost of production of fuel chips are the collection, removal and shredding and loading of wood chips into motor vehicles, which are 500 rubles/m3. Transporting and unloading chips in the consumer is a variable component of the cost of fuel, they depend on the distance traveled by the top-liv. When the customer is at a distance of 145 km, the cost of wood chips increases two times as far from the loading point and amounts to 1000 rubles/m3. Boiler plants on chips have a fairly low cost, even at large removal distances. In the Arkhangelsk region, many populated areas are located far from the transport routes of hydrocarbon fuels, but near logging enterprises. Boiler equipment in such populated areas with a relatively low cost of heat energy from the consumer can pay back much faster. The Arkhangelsk region has significant forest resources. The total area of the forest fund is 29.8 million hectares. The timber industry complex of the Arkhangelsk region is the largest in the North-West Federal District. The annual volume of logging and processing of wood has remained constant for many years and does not exceed 12 million m3. Due to long-term, long-term exploitation, nearby forest tracts are depleted. In the direction of displacement of the logging center there is no necessary infrastructure. The timber processing complex in the Arkhangelsk region requires renovation, modernization and investment. At the moment, the forest complex of the Arkhangelsk region is developing a new direction for itself - bioenergy. Part of the biomass (mainly bark and sawdust) is already used as fuel for the boiler plants of the forestry complex. Abstract

This article is devoted to transport problem, which is one of the main problem of any logging company activity. On fifth all the world's volume of woods belongs to the Russian Federation. Due to the fact that cutting fund is distributed an unevenly and a part of it is in hard-to- rich places it is use is not effective enough. Approximately 40-70 cubic meter of potential raw material per hectare remains at cutting area. Cutting waste and felling residues great removal is considered to lead to transport costs in Russia. This article suggests a way of improvement of logistic system of the flow control of bioenergy resources in logging industry based on the math modeling and transportation problems. Classical transportation problems are known for a long time and are widely used for solving such task. Nevertheless, the use of this task is limited in practice due to various reasons. It may be connected with the activity of a particular enterprise, its location, distribution of the logging fund, etc. The implementation of Monge-Kantorovich transportation problem with intermediate points in distribution of transportation of harvesting and cutting companies can give a positive economical effect and influence the use of wood recourses favorably. Applying of dynamic transportation problem in modern Russian Federation forest industry will allow: - to reduce transportation costs and losses of potential raw material non-use of harvesting companies; - to project the optimal location of intermediate points for generation of logging waste; - to increase the economic efficiency of the enterprise. Abstract

The Borexino experiment located in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, is an organic liquid scintillator detector conceived for the real time spectroscopy of low energy solar neutrinos. The phase-I of the data taking campaign (2007 – 2010) has allowed the first independent measurements of 7Be and pep solar neutrino fluxes as well as the first measurement of anti-neutrinos from the Earth. After a purification of the scintillator, Borexino is now in phase-II since 2011. Thanks to the unprecedented background levels, we have performed the first flux measurement of neutrinos from the fundamental pp reaction which powers the Sun. We review this breakthrough result and other recent results, including the latest review of our terrestrial neutrino analysis. We also discuss the upcoming measurements on middle energy solar neutrino spectral components (pep, CNO) and the new project SOX devoted to the study of sterile neutrinos via the use of a neutrino source placed in close proximity of the detector's active material. Abstract

Important neutrino results came recently from Borexino, a massive, calorimetric liquid scintillator detector installed at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory. With its unprecedented radiopurity levels achieved in the core of the detection medium, it is the only experiment in operation able to study in real time solar neutrino interactions in the challenging sub-MeV energy region. The recently achieved breakthrough observation of the fundamental pp flux, the precise measurement of the 7Be solar neutrino flux, and the results concerning the pep, 8B and CNO fluxes, together with their physics implications, are described in this work. Moreover, the detector has also provided a clean detection of terrestrial neutrinos, from which they emerge as a new probe of the interior of the Earth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cosmogenic 11C is produced in-situ by atmospheric muons and forms the main background for the measurement of solar pep- and CNO-neutrinos. However, FLUKA simulations show that the majority of 11C is accompanied by a free neutron in the final state, thus allowing for an efficient tagging method, the so-called Three-Fold Coincidence technique.
