Anthony Biglan (1973) proposed a typology of academic disciplines that identified three dimensions of academics' perceptions of the similarity of fields of scholarship: (1) "hard-soft", (2) "pure-applied", and (3) "life-non-life". Derek Price (1965) suggested that bibliographic data could be used to provide an assessment of whether hard and soft fields vary as suggested by Biglan's interpretation. Using reference network graphs of publication patterns of citation patterns, Price argued that in research areas exhibiting high levels of consensus, scholars tend to cite recently published documents but in fields with low levels of consensus, there is no disproportional citation of recent work. To assess Price's argument, this study collected data in nine research areas in disciplines spanning Biglan's hard-soft dimension. Using published reviews in each area and indices, publication lists were created of cited works. The results are generally consistent with Biglan's interpretation of the hard-soft dimension as reflecting disciplinary differences in consensus. Four physical science specialties showed over-citation of recent papers while the four social and behavioral science areas showed under-citation of recent papers. One area, in mathematics, did not show the predicted results. The consistency between the results found and Biglan's interpretation of the nature of the "hard-soft" dimension, provides a measure of support for Biglan's interpretation. (Contains 16 references.) This study aimed to reveal general landscape of research on teacher resilience, employing descriptive and bibliometric analyses. Descriptive analyses were performed utilizing Web of Science's internal system, while bibliometric analyses were executed through the VOSviewer program. Web of Science Core Collection was used as a data source. Citation analyses of publications, authors, and journals, as well as co-authorship, co-citation, and common word analyses were conducted. The research reveals a timeline of publications, indicating a notable surge in 2006, and a substantial increase in 2021. The countries with the highest number of publications on teacher resilience, in descending order, are the United States of America (USA), Australia, the United Kingdom (UK), and the People's Republic of China (PRC), according to the research findings. Authors such as Gu, C. Day, S. Beltman, C. Mansfield, and A. Price emerged from the citation analysis. Based on the results from the co-citation analysis, C. Day and Q. Gu were identified as the most frequently co-cited authors. The co-occurrence analysis of keywords highlighted key terms like resilience, teacher education, early career teachers, teacher candidates, professional learning, school leadership, and COVID-19. The findings were contextualized within the existing literature, leading to recommendations for future research. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research on service learning pedagogy into the realm of professional practice for students with disabilities. At this point in the development of a research base for service learning, an emerging need for studies is reported. Limited research exists which studies the impact of service learning activities with respect to the retention of students with disabilities, particularly those who are also African American. The authors suggest that one role that university faculty can take is to create, implement, and evaluate service-learning programs in urban communities that incorporate students, adults with disabilities, the local public school k-12, and teacher educators and researchers from nearby colleges and universities. In the era of digitalization, financial education is essential because it is one of the most critical skills a tech-savvy generation z can acquire. Seeing the rapid change in financial access from traditional to digital today, with bibliometric approach seeks to present how financial education is needed in digital finance. It is increasingly evolving so that Generation Z does not fall into digital traps such as credit and impulsive purchases. Based on the Scopus database, 137 documents have been published from 1999 to 2022. Journals, authors, countries, articles, themes, and publication trends have been used to identify influential works, describe financial education in the era of digitalization, and identify gaps. The United States is the leading producing country with 69 documents and is also the most in citations. In addition, bibliometric analysis shows that the journal of financial counseling is the most productive journal researchers often go to on financial education; next, there is Journal of Consumer Affair. Of the 332 keywords used in the document, financial literacy, financial knowledge, and financial behavior are often identified. Recent themes identified in the last three years include financial inclusion, digital finance, and financial technology. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the state of research on financial education in digital finance for generation z in the transition period to lead to financial well-being. The results are particularly relevant for children studying financial education, given the rising levels of credit and impulsive purchases for Generation Z in the digital financial age, which exposes individuals to fast financial services and requires informed decision-making. TVET is an education and training process with a strong emphasis on industry practises that strives to generate competent workers in particular fields. Cooperation with industry in TVET has the potential to improve the quality and relevance of TVET programmes and equip students with the practical skills and knowledge demanded by employers. Thus, there is a need for a complete bibliometric study of research linked to collaboration between TVET and industry, despite the fact that the number of studies in this field continues to increase. The bibliometric analysis in this research which was extracted from Web of Science database is analyze using VOSviewer. The research conducted a descriptive analysis of the publication number trends, the top authors and leading journals in this field. Next, the researcher also analyzed the co authorship based on authors and countries, research trends, citation and keywords analysis as well as co citation analysis. The article found that most of the articles in this field are published by authors from developed countries where the majority is from the United States. This study aims to examine the research published in the Web of Science database on Curriculum Alignment using the bibliometric analysis method. A bibliometric analysis of the studies included in the research was conducted on August 10, 2023. The "Web of Science Core Collection" was searched by entering the keyword "Curriculum Alignment." One hundred-five studies were included in the evaluation. VOSviewer package program was used for bibliometric analysis of article data. According to the general data of bibliometric analysis, 105 studies were published in 42 different sources, and the average number of citations per document was 11.21. When the distribution of articles according to publication years is examined, most articles were published in 2021. It was understood that there were more publications on Curriculum Alignment in the journals Chemical Education and Assessment in Education: Principles, Policy & Practice. It has been determined that studies on curriculum alignment are concentrated in the United States; The United States was followed by Australia, England, South Africa, Canada, and the People's Republic of China, respectively. It has been determined that topics such as learning outcomes, curriculum mapping, problem-based learning, analytical competencies, in-service teachers, enacted curriculum, curriculum change, collaboration, and assessment design are current issues discussed together with curriculum alignment. A limited number of studies have been conducted on Curriculum Alignment in Turkey. It may be recommended to conduct new studies on the subject. [For the full proceedings, see ED652261.]

Leadership in educational settings, especially in schools, has a long history. Instructional leadership is a leadership style that is seen to increase school effectiveness. This study aims to map bibliographic data on instructional leadership over the past eight decades (1941-2022). The quantitative research approach to analyzing bibliographic information using bibliometric analysis was sourced from the Scopus database, which initially amounted to 951 documents, then became 717 documents after the screening process. Hallinger P. is the author with the most co-authorship networks, and the United States is the most co-authorship network on instructional leadership. The article "The Impact of Leadership on Student Outcomes: An Analysis of the Differential Effects of Leadership Types" by Robinson, V. M. J. (2008) is the article with the highest number of citations, and Hallinger P. is the author with the highest number of citations. The author's co-citation visualization of instructional leadership reveals 4 clusters: (1) measuring the instructional leadership, (2) school effectiveness and improvement, (3) the role of the school principal, and (4) leadership for school restructuring, performance, and achievement. The keyword network visualization for instructional leadership reveals 4 clusters: (1) the impact of instructional leadership on school climate, (2) the application of instructional leadership in school settings, (3) the relationship of instructional leadership with the concept of educational leadership in general, and school principals in particular, (4) instructional leadership efforts in developing professional and leadership teachers and teaching and learning processes that ultimately improve accountability. Education is constantly evolving as a field that shapes the future of societies, so identifying the key topics and prominent studies of educational research in 2023 will help move in the right direction. This study aims to identify the most important and current topics in the field of education through a bibliometric analysis of articles published on education in 2023. In the search in the Web of Science database, 2917 articles on the subject published in 2023 were reached. The articles obtained were evaluated by bibliometric analysis methods. When the frequency distribution of keywords was analyzed, it was seen that keywords such as "higher education", "education", and "teacher education" stood out. In addition, with thematic cluster analysis, the keywords were divided into four different regions, which reflect the thematic foci in the field of education. The study also analyzed the top 10 most cited articles among the articles published on education in 2023. These articles had a wide impact on the field of education and focused on various topics. In the analyzed studies, especially topics such as "diversity in education, learning approaches, and artificial intelligence" played an important role. This study provides essential information for researchers and practitioners in the field of education to help them identify thematic foci in education and important cited studies. With the rapid development of science and technology in recent years, the application areas of fuzzy logic have also gained speed. Fuzzy logic is a frequently preferred approach in the educational process, and it can be said that scientific publications on this topic have recently gained momentum in the literature. In this context, the present study aims to shed light on the research forms of fuzzy logic approach in education. The Web of Science (WoS) database was used for data collection. The search reached 374 scientific publications on the topic after various exclusion procedures. The obtained data were visualized using the mapping technique. As a result of the research, it was found that the number of publications on this topic has generally increased from past to present. The analysis revealed that the most influential countries reporting on this topic are the United States, China, and Taiwan. In addition, National Cheng Kung University, Gazi University, Cornell University, and Marmara University have published the most publications. The authors with the most publications on the fuzzy logic approach are Reyna V.F., Castillo, O. and Huang, Y.M. The analysis of the journals showed that Computer Applications in Engineering Education and International Journal of Electrical Engineering Education are the journals that contribute the most to this topic. This study presents a social network analysis of the keywords attached to articles published in the "Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education" ("TOJDE"), a prominent journal in the field of open and distance learning. The social network analysis applied was based on a data mining and analytics approach. A total of 1120 keywords from 784 selected articles constituted the sample of the study. The keyword analysis revealed that the articles published in the "TOJDE" largely focused on technology-related issues, suggesting that the issues related to educational technology are a popular research area. However, the analysis also found that there was an imbalance between educational technology-related topics and pedagogy-related topics, a critical issue that needs to be further considered. Astronomy is the oldest of the natural sciences. It is well known that the period covering about seven centuries, from Aryabhata to Bhaskaracharya II (c. 476-1150), was the golden age of Indian astronomy. In the present study, we identify research trends and the growth of knowledge in the field of astronomy science research. The study is an essential tool to measure the scientific publications in the field. This study analyses the publications of astronomy research in India published during 1991-1995 and 2011-2015. The study assesses how astronomy progresses in India and its impact is reflected in the science citation index over the period 1991-1995 and 2011-2015. The publication output has been analyzed using quantitative and qualitative indicators, such as progress in research article publishing, change in authorship patterns, citation patterns during 1991- 1995 and 2011-2015, articles that received the most citations, and international collaboration with other countries. Further, the study investigated highly prolific authors and highly preferred journals. This paper stems from a PhD dissertation research focusing on the Nordic representatives' contribution to the field of comparative and international education (CIE) since the middle of the 20th century to the present days. Following the idea of the clear-cut distinction between the two component parts of the field in the region in question, the purpose of this study is to identify and point out the key achievements of six Nordic internationalists in the field of CIE from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Firstly, they are regarded as a group which collaborated and rallied around the Nordic Association for the Study of Education in Developing Countries (NASEDEC) for nearly 20 years. In this respect, the crucial role of the national donor agencies, which assist developmental aid to education in financing and promoting international research, is examined. Secondly, the work and research activities of the internationalists under review are analyzed in order to find the individual contributions to the field and their prevailing characteristics. Thus, by making an attempt at searching for the internationalists' scientific achievements, the author finds what the applied development of the field of CIE in the Nordic countries looks like. The authors of the article describe the popular trends and methods as well as ICT tools used for the mapping and visualization of scientific domains as a research methodology which is attracting more and more interest from scientific information and science studies professionals. The researchers analysed Pajek, one of the programs used for the processing and visualization of bibliographic and bibliometric data, within the framework of the implementation of IRNet research network project and activities, and presented several examples of visualisation. This paper is a survey of publications on artificial neural networks published in business journals for the period ending July 1996. Its purpose is to identify and analyze trends in neural network research during that period. This paper shows which topics have been heavily researched, when these topics were researched, and how that research has changed over time. Findings indicated a total of 537 articles related to neural networks in the ABI/Inform database. Eighty-nine percent of these articles were published since 1990. A majority of these papers were classified as theoretical, closely followed by articles on applications of neural networks. Only nine percent of the articles were empirical in nature. Until 1993 there was an exponential trend in the number of articles published followed by a stagnant growth thereafter. Finance topped the list in the number of articles published followed by engineering. Among the business areas, accounting had the least number of articles with a few business areas such as insurance and human resources untouched by neural networks. (Author/AEF)

This paper presents a science/science education bibliography, to assist science educationalists interested in Papua New Guinea. 392 articles were reviewed. The bibliography was then categorised in a number of ways to indicate patterns of research productivity in various areas of science education, and at different levels of education. A questionnaire was devised to obtain information from former and current researchers in the field about their own contributions. This exercise produced some surprising information about science education research in Papua New Guinea. (Contains 1 table.) This paper discusses social science information needs and behavior. The first section describes the Bath studies on social science information behavior in the 1970s. The world "after Bath" is considered in the second section, including the development of large databases, information retrieval problems, and scholars' personal information collections. The third section addresses new conceptions in information science and practice, focusing on areas that suggest the need for re-investigation of social science needs and behavior, including advances in bibliometric methodology, changing the concept of the user to enlarge the perspective of information behavior to its context in the real world, and advances in information technology. Worldwide socioeconomic implications are addressed in the next section, including economic loss resulting from sub-optimal information infrastructures in developing countries, as well as problems in accessing information for practitioners in developing countries. In Taiwan, the Technology Education for 1-12 graders is comprised of two courses--Living Technology (LT) and Information Technology (IT). With its ever-changing feature, Technology Education needs on-going research to support its decisions and actions. The education-related academic programs in universities regularly concern about the development of primary and secondary education. To identify the evolution directions and knowledge orientation of the research topics of theses and dissertations, from LT and IT education graduate programs, will be helpful for clarifying trends and issues in Technology Education of primary and secondary education. Hence, this study used co-word analysis of bibliometrics to analyze the theses and dissertations from all LT and IT education graduate programs in Taiwan and completed in the last decade (2004-2013 academic years). Totally, 884 LT and 992 IT summaries of theses and dissertations in the database--National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan, served as the subject of this study. The results show: (1) The number of LT's and IT's theses and dissertations significantly declined; (2) LT's research topical focuses have moved to e-learning, while IT's focuses have changed from universal e-learning to game-based e-learning; (3) The connection between research sub-areas and theme in either LT or IT is not well-structured; and (4) The research topics completed are in lack of teacher education and technological/information literacy. This paper discusses visual communication theory. After an examination of the literature, this study built a more extensive bibliography of visual communication in general--theory, research, teaching--as well as a taxonomy that was better grounded. A 95-page bibliography was developed for works from a number of scholarly journals dealing with visual communication. Approximately 1,617 entries were organized into 13 major categories and 90 subcategories that represented the focal point of the work; a number of sources were also cross-referenced. The original 15 most popular (written about) areas and the 15 most popular cross-referenced areas were combined to provide a picture of the areas which are receiving the most attention in the literature. One observation that could be made was that at the top of the combined list was dominated by foundation theoretical areas from psychology (memory, cognition/information processing, and perception) as well as visual communication (mental imagery and visual/verbal interaction). Three of the professional areas also ranked in the top 10 with photography at number 2 and advertising and television/video at numbers 6 and 7. Only one education topic area appeared in the top 10: development/children's studies. The list demonstrates that visual communication has its own areas of theory and scholarly attention and that this literature base is nearly as extensive as the psychology base. This paper highlights qualitatively and quantitatively research and presents a valuable overview of new citation enhanced databases in the context of research evaluation for the productivity of Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar. He has total 472 research publications in the fields of Astronomy and Astrophysics (AA) published from 1961-2015. In addition, this paper provides an overview of the citation-enhanced databases viz Astrophysics Data System Beta: A powerful new interface for performing citation analysis. Previously, scientometrics had been used to measure the publication productivity of Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar using the Astrophysics Data System (ADS). The scope of this paper is limited to Astrophysics Data System Beta. The result indicates that most of his papers are published in peer reviewed journals having the highest Impact Factor. The average number of publications per year is 8.74 and with the maximum papers published during 1981-1990 and 1996-2000. The total number of citations for his publications is 3516 covering 665 of his papers published during 1961-1970. He had many research collaborations, specifically with Prof. F. Hoyle (87 papers), Prof. G. Burbidge (38 papers), Prof. N. Wickramasinghe (22 papers) and Prof. T. Padmanabhan (21 papers). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to review five initiatives in national curriculum collaboration, which have emerged since the move to national consistency arose in 2003, and to examine reports on these initiatives published by the news media and the education profession. Searches on web sites of education organisations, an electronic magazine, and the Australian Education Index were conducted to identify documents, news reports and educational literature referring to the five initiatives. Content analysis method was applied to summarise and categorise the documents. The results showed that policy making during this phase of national curriculum collaboration has shifted from establishing national consistency to introducing standards-based education, and reports published by the news media and the education profession have increased since this shift occurred. The conclusion indicated that, whilst a national debate has emerged on this issue, only a small proportion of policy makers and leaders within the education community has been engaged in contributing to this debate.

The purpose of this study was to develop a model for the distribution of authorships--based on the initial hypothesis that the distribution of authorships follows a shifted Waring distribution--and to test the derived model and some other discrete probability models for goodness-of-fit against empirical data. Bibliographic data from 15 abstracting journals covering the literature in six fields--engineering, medical, physical, mathematical and social sciences, and humanities--were used in testing the goodness-of-fit of the shifted Waring distribution and 13 other discrete probability models. The preliminary findings presented here are based on 60 data sets collected from 10 abstracting journals covering the literature in the mathematical and social sciences and humanities. They indicate that the promising models for the distribution of authorships are the shifted Waring, shifted generalized negative binomial, shifted negative binomial, shifted generalized Poisson, and shifted inverse Gaussian-Poisson distributions. Three advantages and possible practical applications of a model for the distribution of authorships include: (1) ability to summarize the entire frequency distribution by a few parameters of the model; (2) estimation of the number of entries in an author index; and (3) usefulness in a simulation study designed to determine, subject to space constraints, the maximum number of authors per paper to be included in an author index. ABSTRACT Google Scholar (GS) is a database that enables researchers to create their scholarly profiles and keeps track of, among others, their citation counts, and h- and i10-index values. GS is now increasingly being used for research evaluation purposes. Although rich in bibliometric data, GS indexes some duplicate publications and citations, and therefore tends to inflate the citation counts to some extent. Based on a small sample of GS profiles of researchers, this paper aims to study the extent by which duplicates change the citation counts and metrics based thereupon. Findings show that duplicates in GS database somewhat inflates the citation metrics. The scale of the problem as well as the effect of dirty data on performance evaluations based on GS citations data need to be studied further using larger samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT This paper presents results of a study that applies a historical bibliometric treatment on the Journal of the Siam Society in the period from 1972 to 1976, aiming to chart a life story of the Journal in such the timeframe. The research approach taken brings together quantitative and qualitative research methods to trace the historical development of a learned publication devoted to the academic studies of Thailand. The bibliometric methods examine the trend and change in the Journal's bibliographic characteristics which are viewed as the intellectual contours of the Journal. Then, these contours are contextualised and interpreted through historical research methods which primarily engage documentary evidence. The findings of the study show that both bibliometric and historical analyses complement each other, suggesting that the research design and methods are workable. Bibliometric indicators, citation counts and/or download counts are increasingly being used to inform personnel decisions such as hiring or promotions. These statistics are very often misused. Here we provide a guide to the factors which should be considered when using these so-called quantitative measures to evaluate people. The astronomy community usually turns to the Astrophysics Data System for bibliometrics. When the context is cross-disciplinary, commercial products like Web of Science and Scopus are used along with related analytics tools instead. The results are often tainted by inherent problems in the chosen classification system. A review of the most common challenges and pitfalls is given. Commercial altmetrics products could be added to the evaluation toolbox in the near future despite the fact that they are best suited for promotion instead of evaluation. Norway, Denmark, and Finland have created journal and publisher ranking systems that are used in national funding models. The skies of Northern Chile are considered among the best in the world for astronomy due to their geographical, climatic and atmospheric conditions. In fact, during the last several decades, a great number of astronomical observatories have been built by space research institutions devoted to space research, turning Chile into one of the countries with the greatest astronomical observation capacity in the world. Consequently, it is relevant to explore and assess the development of astronomy in Chile during the last ten years (2005-2015), carrying out a bibliometric analysis to extract traditional metrics, complemented with alternative metrics, to identify the Chilean production and scientific contribution of research in this field of knowledge. The results from traditional metrics, based on the information obtained in the Web of Science (WoS) database analyzed through InCites for the Astronomy & Astrophysics category indicate a sustained increase of the scientific production for the discipline during the last ten years. In particular, the Normalized Citation Impact of organizations and institutions conducting research in Chile is above the worldwide average. On the other hand, the alternative metrics, including for instance, the altmetrics types presented by the SCOPUS database, reflect that the Chilean research impact is much lower in the context of social networks. ABSTRACT Serendipitous discovery has been a research topic for more than one hundred years, but only recently has it been the focus of attention in library and information science (LIS). In 1960, Bernier published the first article on serendipity in a LIS journal. The number of publications gradually grew until 1990s, after which the field experienced a significant interest by the LIS researchers. Currently, LIS researchers are studying serendipity and information encountering from different perspectives, ranging from analyzing various conceptual frameworks to conducting bibliometric studies and investigating factors that trigger and affect the phenomenon. ABSTRACT This panel brings together experts in bibliometrics and information retrieval to discuss how each of these two important areas of information science can help to inform the research of the other. There is a growing body of literature that capitalizes on the synergies created by combining methodological approaches of each to solve research problems and practical issues related to how information is created, stored, organized, retrieved and used. The session will begin with an overview of the common threads that exist between IR and metrics, followed by a summary of findings from the BIR workshops and examples of research projects that combine aspects of each area to benefit IR or metrics research areas, including search results ranking, semantic indexing and visualization. This study documented the perception of prestige of applied sports biomechanics journals, as well as influential articles and books. Recent ISBS members were surveyed to rate the quality/prestige of 35 journals. Descriptive statistics of ratings were calculated for respondents and correlated with the 2008 impact factor (IF) reported in the Journal Citation Reports. Mean ratings showed that international perception of influential journals were weakly (r = 0.48) correlated with the IF. These results confirm previous studies that the IF is a poor index for evaluating the influence of journals publishing applied sports biomechanics research, and there was considerable diversity among the respondent's nominations of the most influential books and articles in the field. ABSTRACT Metrics have become objective standards for evaluating research performance. Measurements such as citation counts and h-index are used for evaluating individual research performance as well as the ranking of research institutions and universities. This exploratory study aims to understand the implications of the increasing use of metrics on scholarly communication and practices. A pilot study was conducted in universities in Ireland. Preliminary findings show that researchers use Google Scholar and ResearchGate for self-monitoring and that they perceive bibliometric measures as indicators of achievements. The pilot study also shows that there are mixed feelings toward bibliometrics: while the participants emphasise that research interest is the most important criterion in choosing research topics and publication channels and that citation counts, h-index, and RG scores are coincidental of their research activities, they also perceive the quantitative measures as objective evaluation of research performance without knowing how the h-index or RG scores are calculated. Academics are increasingly being asked to demonstrate the impact of their research beyond the walls of the academy. Societal impact measures were introduced as part of the Research Excellence Framework exercise in the UK in 2014 with a number of other countries, including Australia, considering similar assessments. As societal impact measures continue to proliferate there will be significant implications for academics, institutions, and academic libraries to document and support these activities. Information science is well-placed not only to guide practical supports within our institutions, but also to develop metrics and qualitative approaches to assess this type of research impact. This exploratory qualitative study -- situated in a constructivist grounded theory methodology -- investigated academics' experiences and perceptions of the concept of societal research impact and the supports needed to facilitate this work. The definition of impact varied greatly among participants, but regardless of the participant's conception, interviewees felt that they were not prepared, trained, or had access to the needed supports to adequately document non-academic types of impact. The data point to a number of emergent themes including a lack of relevant methodologies for tracking societal impact, the shortcomings of metrics approaches to document impact outside of academe, and the need for academic libraries to extend current reference and training supports to provide researchers with the tools and skills needed in this new impact landscape. Building upon well-established paradigms brought forth by such theorists as Robert K. Merton, Pierre Bourdieu, and Blaise Cronin, the panel will span the full cycle of academic production to show, through various bibliometric measures and other quantitative and qualitative analyses, how the reward system of science is evolving. While there is strong evidence to suggest that such forms of dissemination as social media output and blogging are being incorporated into scientific practices, scientific impact still remains principally assessed using measures such as authorship and citations, whilst other elements, such as acknowledgements, have received varying levels of regard at various times. Disciplinary considerations also arise. Using a wide range of approaches, measures, and datasets, the panelists will establish links between their individual research to create an empirically driven picture of the reward system of science and its indicators. This study proposes a weighted random walk method on co-word networks to identify important themes of a field using structural features of the networks. The goal is to test whether the weighted random walk method can be used to produce meaningful results on co-word networks. In addition, we examined the relationships among the results from the random walk method and other two common metrics for identifying important themes in a field: frequency and point centrality. Using a dataset of 17K bibliographic records for the articles in the LIS field from the Web of Science, our results indicate that all three measures are significantly correlated. A detailed comparison of the top terms ranked by the three metrics from the years of 2002-2006 and 2007- 2012 is provided. The results show that the three measures are generally similar in revealing hotspots and development of the field. However, some noticeable differences are also found. The random walk method boosted the rankings of some lower ranked terms in the other two metrics (e.g. "universe", "servic" and "develop") due to their cooccurrences with top ranked terms (e.g. "information").
