Macekura should be commended on an even-handed account, though the consequence is that he does little to convince the reader that a no-growth economy is desirable, or that alterative statistical metrics are important to social progress. Macekura seems to acknowledge that the public had little interest in the growth critics and rallied to Reagan's promises of abundance through growth. Growth critics, however, struggled to develop alterative statistical measures of progress that would replace Gross National Product and reorient the public's gaze toward equality, environmental protection, and human achievement.
