Wayfinding is the study of how human beings use a variety of informational media to orient themselves and navigate in space. This chapter highlighted the wayfinding experiences of the first-year students with respect to the ability to find their way in the university campuses in Mumbai and to locate the library and its collection as well as to find out the availability and evaluation of signage through SWOT analysis in the university libraries in Mumbai. The results point to a need to pay serious attention to improving the visual guidance system to make the libraries more user-friendly and also suggested various measures for creating user friendly access in librarires.

This thesaurus identifies nearly 4,000 subject heading terms that pertain specifically to the 41 countries that make up Africa south of the Sahara. The process of identifying these terms began with a search through the "Library of Congress Subject Headings," followed by searches of other subject heading materials and bibliographic databases. Additional cross references and references to African languages, peoples, and countries were added, so that the final listing contains references to over 600 African peoples and nearly 600 African languages. An introduction explains how to use the thesaurus. One appendix outlines the African history classification used, and the other presents a table of subdivisions that can be added to geographical subject headings to refine searches. (SLD)

Examines library automation product introductions and conversions to new operating systems. Compares user satisfaction ratings of the following library software packages: DOS/Windows, UNIX, Macintosh, and DEC VAX/VMS. Software is rated according to documentation, service/support, training, product reliability, product capabilities, ease of use, vendor's integrity, and overall satisfaction. During the past several years, vendors of electronic resources have been monitoring their systems for occurrences of the downloading of large volumes of material by individuals who access these systems through libraries. These incidents violate license agreements between libraries and vendors. The perpetrators may be legitimate authorized users of a library, or they may be unauthorized users who have found a temporary hole in network security and attain access through open proxy servers or other means. Some use technical tools, like robots, to facilitate quicker systematic downloading. These acts may result in cessation of access to the resource for a limited time until the library investigates the situation and reports its findings to the vendor. Librarians have options for investigating these incidents, working with vendors, and preventing such incidents from happening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
