Edited by a diverse group of expert collaborators, the "Handbook of the Cultural Foundations of Learning" is a landmark volume that brings together cutting-edge research examining learning as entailing inherently cultural processes. Conceptualizing culture as both a set of social practices and connected to learner identities, the chapters synthesize contemporary research in elaborating a new vision of the cultural nature of learning, moving beyond summary to reshape the field toward studies that situate culture in the learning sciences alongside equity of educational processes and outcomes. The papers presented as part of this symposium explore several aspects of integrating technology in teacher education. The title paper, presented by Christy J. Falba, reports on a study to investigate the process and progress of integrating technology into university level teacher education courses from the perspective of the university instructor. The study examined reasons for including technology in courses and concerns about innovation, in the context of six individual case studies of university faculty. The five seminar presentations are: "Technology Integration, Research, and Teaching: Balancing Social Contexts" (Tom Bean); "Cybersurfing: A New Professor Catches the Waves" (Juli K. Dixon); "Just the Tip of the Iceberg" (Patricia A. This book is written for therapists and for students who are becoming therapists. It offers insights to artists, teachers, and others interested in exploring the power of expressive arts for growth and healing. It provides theoretical grounding and practical applications from the collective experience of the authors who share their own immersion in the creative process. Expressive arts therapy is introduced as a reclaiming of ancient traditions that combined community, ritual, and art in healing. This book situates expressive arts therapy within the context of psychological theory and overviews the historical development and current practices in the field. The remaining chapters of the book focus on the cycles of the creative process, providing overviews, experiences appropriate for that cycle, personal stories, and poems related to that cycle. Two experts on education offer a rich and diverse selection of children's literature and teaching strategies for the K-8 mathematics classroom. This workbook for students provides an accessible introduction to a range of ways of analyzing language in context. The workbook can be used in a number of ways, for example, as a student reference text to briefly review a particular kind of language analysis or as a course textbook to introduce students to a variety of approaches to language data analysis. It is: practical, offering a "hands-on" approach to data analysis; authentic--the 24 data examples analyzed and discussed are drawn from published work by experts in specific fields of language analysis; academically rigorous--the data selected is from important research projects in the field of language study; and wide-ranging analytical methods are drawn from sociolinguistics, sociocultural approaches, ethnography, multimodal approaches, and discourse analysis. Contexts exemplified are drawn from education, the media, informal communication, new technologies, child youth and adult settings. Data examples are included from a range of national contexts including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong, Japan, and Pakistan. The workbook includes a general introduction, followed by four main parts: Part 1 looks at approaches to spoken interaction; Part 2 examines approaches to written texts; Part 3 explores multimodal approaches; and Part 4 looks at ethnographic approaches. A statement of policy outlines the method to be used by all schools, colleges, and universities that desire to take advantage of a seven-day rerecording privilege to record televised material transmitted by public television stations. The policy has been jointly agreed upon by the Public Broadcasting Service, the Great Plains National Instructional Television Library, the Agency for Instructional Television, and the Public Television Library. The policy statement sets forth rules about who may record, what may be recorded, for what purpose, and under what conditions the recordings may be transmitted. (JY)

Part IV, case 21 of the book "Unleashing Suppressed Voices on College Campuses: Diversity Issues in Higher Education," edited by O. Gilbert Brown, Kandace G. Hinton and Mary Howard-Hamilton is presented. It discusses the case study concerning the transition of higher education towards gender issues on college campuses in the U.S. The study provides details on the status of student LGBT communities in several campuses, considering gender issues evolving at the University of the Midwest.

Lesbian and gay (LG) parents face common and unique challenges compared to heterosexual parents. In addition to the typical challenges that all parents encounter while rearing children, LG parents often face myriad obstacles to having and rearing children in a society that struggles to accept alternative family structures. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of the empirical literature related to LG parenting and children of same-sex couples. Then, some fundamental principles of feminist theory as they relate to the provision of therapy are discussed. Last, we present a case study that exemplifies judicious application of feminist therapy as a means to validate, strengthen, and promote resiliency among the family members of a lesbian couple who had sought treatment. Cancer research has benefited from the ability to manipulate the mouse genome. Transgenic technology is being used to produce mice with refined genomic mutations that recapitulate cancer development in the human. Transgenic mice have proven valuable in vivo models to address the biological consequences of mutations found in tumors and interactions of two mutations in the same mouse. Carcinogen screening or therapeutic assessment might be enhanced by conducting 2-yr bioassays in the background of a mutant mouse model. The introduction of transgenic methods to limit mutant gene expression to a single tissue or cell type by Tet-inducible or Cre recombinase-Lox P technology permits genetic models of otherwise lethal phenotypes to be developed. Gene traps in embryonic stem (ES) cells are being used to capture genes and conduct initial screens for gene function in "knockout" mice. Gene "knockdowns" in mouse embryos by lentivirus delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) constructs are poised to become valuable tools for studying cancer gene function with some additional technology development. Transgenic mice allow a combinatorial approach utilizing genomic information and physical manipulation of selected genes to dissect pathways altered during tumorigenesis. Finally, although transgenic mouse models are invaluable tools for dissecting cancer and related processes, future goals are to develop "humanized" transgenic mouse models that may more accurately respond to and reflect the human condition. An essay is presented on the reaction of college students at Pennsylvania State University in Altoona to the author's course statement on racial/ethnic autobiography. She states that teaching race and ethnicity increases her awareness of her identity as a white, female, Southern, middle-class assistant professor of sociology. Her assignment requires students to describe how they learned about their own and other individuals' race and ethnicity. She emphasizes the need for teachers of race not to remove all racial tension from classroom discussions.
