The 2021 EUROCALL conference engaged just under 250 speakers from 40 different countries. Cnam Paris and Sorbonne Université joined forces to host and organise the event despite the challenging context due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally programmed to be held on site in the heart of Paris, France, the EUROCALL organising team and executive committee agreed to opt for a blended and then for a fully online conference. The theme of the 2021 EUROCALL conference was "CALL & Professionalisation". This volume, a selection of 54 short papers by some of the EUROCALL 2021 presenters, offers a combination of research studies as well as practical examples fairly representative of the theme of the conference. This paper discusses recent histories of labor shortages in Singapore, Japan, and several western European countries. Emphasis is upon the economic effects of severe shortages of labor. Fearing that these shortages would seriously handicap further economic progress, many people in these countries have advocated large-scale immigration or increased population growth or both. It is the author's conclusion that the existence of a labor shortage is not a valid ground for encouraging either population growth or immigration. The series of which this publication is a part is intended to increase understanding of the interrelationships between population growth and socioeconomic and cultural patterns throughout the world, and to communicate this understanding to scholars and policy makers. This collection of working papers in linguistics includes four works. "Autour de la racine indo-europeenne 'pet-' ('voler') (pour servir a l'histoire des faits latins)" ("Concerning the Indo-European Root 'Pet-' ('To Fly') (To Serve as an Example of Latin Facts)" by Claude Sandoz looks at the Latin manifestations of the root and illustrates the value of historico-comparative analysis. In "Analyse hierarchique et fonctionnelle du discours: co-enonciation et mouvement discursif" ("Hierarchic and Functional Discourse Analysis: Co-Enunciation and Discourse Movement"), Therese Beguin-Jeanneret applies discourse analysis in a new way, a conversation between two children and an adult. "Quelques remarques sur l'excommunication dans les interactions verbales en face a face" ("Some Remarks on Excommunication in Verbal Face-to-Face Interactions") by Serge Rubi examines conversational processes used to break off one topic of discussion for various reasons. In "Enseigner le francais L2 a des debutants avec une methode 'communicative'" ("Teaching French as a Second Language to Beginning Adults with the 'Communicative' Method"), Francoise Redard reflects on her own experiences teaching French to this population, focusing on whether having the objective of immediate communication is appropriate in all cases. Information on the Latin Monetary Union is presented. In 1865, to achieve monetary union without political union, France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland decided to use the French franc as their common unit of account, while nominally retaining their own national metal currencies of gold and silver coins. The system faced pressure when Italy printed paper money. The Union collapsed 20 years after its inception when Germany centralized control of paper money.

In a context of considerable interest in apprenticeship in recent years, Cedefop and the OECD decided to explore its future from the perspective of a number of megatrends, including sociodemographic changes, the accelerated adoption of emerging technologies and new forms of work organisation. They also considered how these trends have affected, and will continue to affect, the design and delivery of apprenticeship in European and OECD countries. The combination of the emerging economic crisis as an aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, together with long-term structural trends affecting global economies, will entail a profound transformation of the world of work and require effective policy responses in the years to come. This publication provides insights from 16 papers by researchers from Europe, Australia and the United States; nine were presented and discussed among policy-makers, practitioners and researchers during the joint Cedefop-OECD symposium on the future of apprenticeship held in October 2019 in Paris. Evidence and analysis in these papers will help inform political decisions shaping the future of apprenticeship.

"Participation" has emerged as a key to sustainable development and, in particular, to the management of local resources and conflict. This chapter summarises and discusses research on participatory environmental management carried out under the Swiss Priority Programme Environment (1993-2000). The seven papers presented in Part I of this volume focus on innovative forms of participatory management that are often combined with the political empowerment of communities. Two papers describe and analyse the effects of particular cases of participation in environmental management in the urban area. The other papers describe, illustrate, and discuss particular methods and approaches that promote co-operation and co-ordination as well as the empowerment of disadvantaged citizens. This synthesis and overview chapter proposes a distinction between two dimensions of participation: (1) political participation, the degree of involvement of individual citizens and their social organisations in policy and related decision-making; (2) participation in public management, the role citizens and groups of the civil society play in the management of public affairs. Although the two dimensions are not mutually required, in reality many participatory approaches in environmental management promote both more efficient solutions and empowerment of weaker strata of society by redistributing the control of decisions and resources. The following are the key findings of and lessons to be learnt from Part I of this volume: 1. There is a substantial potential in environmental management for new co-operation between emerging actors, such as civil society organisations and commercially oriented micro enterprises. Co-operation brings benefits from the comparative advantages of the different actors with respect to social mobilisation, technical support and operations, and financial management. 2. Civil society organisations become empowered when they obtain greater control of resources and decisions (the "winners"). Their empowerment can go hand in hand with the disempowerment of other social entities, such as conventional local public administration or legislative institutions (the "losers"). The disempowerment of these entities may, however, negatively affect the delivery of public services. One solution lies in decentralisation processes with concurrent new institutional constellations, which could reinforce local authorities in new regulative functions. However, the evidence shows that the political power structures in place tend to persist as long as unorganised interests are not strengthened in a targeted way. 3. Public participation, in the sense of public control of decisions and resources, may reinforce the "local visions" of authorities. The participation of (yet) informal groups of citizens can contribute to the acquisition of legitimisation by political actors. For creating sustainable solutions, the mechanisms of participation, that is the definition of rules and guidelines for participation, need to be formalised and legitimised. 4. The role and degree of control exerted by funding institutions remain unchanged in the cases described here, particularly in the South. Funding institutions retain the greatest influence on decisions and resources. 5. Communication platforms of a non-committal nature constitute an arena for common learning and reflection among the actors, which allows the capitalisation, communication, and reproduction of knowledge and experience. Platforms provide opportunities for coordination and eventual agreement on formal, committal, and binding collaborative arrangements among the interested participants. Those arrangements require legal recognition. 6. Communication of individual perceptions and realities forms the basis for common learning and action. Mental mapping and comparable visualisation approaches as well as facilitation prove to be meaningful aids to communication among different parties with varying and often divergent interests. 7. Conditions of successful participation in environmental management include a common interest and co-operation among the actors; the preparedness of political authorities to provide legitimacy; the availability of monetary, social, and psychological resources; professional process moderation, transparency, and the growing legitimisation of such endeavours in politico-institutional terms. The evidence shows that "participation" can link efficient environmental management with empowerment aims. In this, it can provide for sustainable solutions for increasingly complex environmental problems. On the other hand, the same case experiences reveal that participation is not a "panacea" that can be applied always and everywhere. Social hierarchies, heterogeneous interests of the social actors involved, and their diverging perceptions hinder collective efforts towards action that is environmentally sound and socially just. On top of this mission of discovery, it has also the duties of technological innovation, of human resource development and international collaboration, the latter not being restricted to its member states, as explained in this paper. Both Austria and Switzerland are small countries with a long tradition hosting tourists. Irrespective of high levels of economic development, the two countries also have high levels of tourism intensity when measured either in terms of number of tourists per native population or in terms of tourism receipts per population (e.g., per gross national product). Consequently, both countries also display a long tradition and evolution in their development of systems of tourism education and training albeit under differing market conditions and pressures. Both countries provide similar products like in the field of cultural tourism and alpine tourism. The tourism structure is also comparable. Both countries are dominated by family owned small and medium size businesses. However, their political structures are very different. This paper shows how each country under the three forces of labour market pressures and industry requirements, on the one hand and tourism education policy initiatives on the other has evolved two slightly different tourism education systems. Furthermore, an attempt was made to provide, based on the discussion in the first part of the paper, a more general explanation with respect to the response of tourism schooling/training supplies to varying conditions in tourism product markets, tourism employment and labour market systems, public choice decisions and general economic conditions. Finally, the paper discusses the paradigmatic shift (i.e., structural change) of tourism factor and product markets from the "Old to New Tourism" and discusses its implications for new types of tourism Schooling and training in these two countries. Mobile business applications in tourism have been developed in the last years for various platforms and services. However, most of the applications have been tested in lab-like conditions. The article describes the trial case of St. Moritz, Switzerland. With the help of the Destination-Pilot acceptability, usability, and market potential for mobile information services have been tested in a real environment situation. The trial involves numerous visitors and tourist enterprises. The paper presents opportunities and limitations to so called mobile travel recommender systems. Chapter XIII of the book "The Man Who Knew," by Edgar Wallace is presented. It starts with the arrival Frank Merrill from Lausanne after a great trial in his life, Merrill then made his way to hotel omnibus. It continues with conversation between Frank and May along with Saul Arthur Mann who was on vacation.

This book examines the transition from higher education to the labor market in 10 countries. Although the individual papers do not follow a rigid standard format, they all consider the following issues: (1) how the labor market for graduates is organized; (2) how vocational orientation is achieved in degree courses in individual countries; and (3) how the transition from higher education to employment is organized. Of the 10 countries discussed, 7 are longtime members of the European Union. Poland is included as an example of a country of the former Eastern block that is currently undergoing significant transformation, and Japan and Sri Lanka are included to illustrate the completely different Asian cultures. Despite the far-reaching structural similarities that are evident in the Western European countries examined, it is particular national characteristics rather than common features that dominate the individual country reports. The identity of the progressive educational movement is in a state of crisis. Past answers, it seems, are no longer sufficient to define an educational policy that responds to the objectives of democracy and equity in education. To help understand this crisis, some reflections on the role of education are offered in this text, which tries to provide a better understanding of what is changing and how it has changed. It also looks ahead to try and provide a course for action. The book combines different disciplinary approaches--history, sociology, pedagogy, psychology, and philosophy--and although it takes a political stance, it tries to allow room for doubts and queries so as to avoid the dichotomous thinking that presents only pure pessimism or total optimism. The nine chapters focus on such topics as the crisis in the traditional educational system, efforts to ensure quality education for all citizens, the role of new technologies, ways in which to construct an identity so as to balance such ideals as individualism and general interest, the makeup of the total school, the establishment of a system of education or an institution of education, the many expectations placed on teachers, and some of the characteristics of educational reform. This report presents papers, analyses, and recommendations of a five-day workshop held to explore the relationship of education and youth employment. Five papers delivered at the meetings are included: "Current Assumptions on the Nature and Purpose of Secondary Education and Its Relation to Education 16-19," by Edmund King; "Review of Research into Aspects of the Education and Training of Young Part-Time Students," by Marjorie Holt; "Purposes and Effectiveness of Current Research into the Education of Young People Who Are at Work," by Burkart Sellin; "Methodological Problems Encountered in Research Projects on the Education of Young People at Work," by Hans Seitz; and "Non Methodological Problems of Educational Research in the Area of Young People Aged 16-19 Who Are at Work," by Gerhard Welbers and Udo Reuter. An introductory paper and a summary of the proceedings provide an analysis of the workshop presentations and discussions while a separate section outlines the recommendations that the participants made for future research in the areas of youth motivation, curriculum development, organizational patterns for education, curriculum evaluation, and additional issues such as the needs of disadvantaged youths. In the appendixes are (1) addenda to the Holt and King papers, focusing on other perspectives of their topics and (2) information about the Danish Secretariat for Youth Research. As labor-saving, efficiency-increasing electronic technology is introduced into offices, jobs held by women will change. Although some jobs may be lost, most job loss will be absorbed by attrition and reduction of waste. Fewer new openings may occur in office jobs, however, especially in a recessionary economy. On the other hand, the jobs that are created may require skills that women do not have, especially mathematical and spatial-relation skills. Other new jobs may be de-skilled, leading to a loss in recognition and pay through specialization and assembly-line techniques; these jobs may dehumanize women in the same way that assembly-line work has sometimes dehumanized their male counterparts. If women are to benefit from the coming job changes, appropriate action will be required now in schools, training establishments, and businesses to encourage women to acquire the broad-based, analytical skills that they will need. Government officials, employers, and trade union leaders each have a role to play, but the central effort must come from working women through their understanding of the issues and participation in the process of change. Chapter II of Part VI of the book "Life of Luther" by Julius Koestlin is presented. It relates the desire of Pope Paul III, who was newly installed as pope after Clement VII, to bring a true negotiation that would address the need of certain reforms within the catholic church. The article also highlights the desire of church reformer Martin Luther to unite the German Protestants with the churches in Switzerland who expressed anxiousness for the said union.

The establishment of "platforms for resource use negotiation" is a promising way of dealing with complex natural resource management problems, a way of negotiating in order to avoid overexploitation and inter-user conflicts. "Innovation co-operations" then take over the task of realising the ideas developed by such platforms. The first part of this chapter introduces and discusses the concepts of platforms and innovation co-operations, which are two complementary institutions for sustainable landscape and regional development. We propose that these institutions can be the common basis for development processes run by the various stakeholders. In particular, the chapter highlights the learning processes and their characteristics that are constitutive elements of both institutions. in the second part, the chapter illustrates the concept with a concrete case. Organic farmers in the Canton of Lucerne (Switzerland) developed a platform called "Agriculture-Landscape-Economy Lucerne." It brought together representatives of different interest groups in a non-committal way. The platform provided for the joint initiation and development of project ideas. As it did not, however, offer a practicable basis for project planning and implementation, the stake holders participating in the platform founded a commercial enterprise called "Kulturland 21 Ltd." This network, consisting of people, companies, and organisations, assists the implementation of projects that serve sustainable use of the countryside, and it provides the necessary legal framework. The case shows that commitment towards specific and tangible projects requires prior reflection and the definition of goals—that is, the development of a common understanding on a non-committal basis. The call for citizen participation in local sustainability contexts became very prominent with the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992. Since then, participatory processes, known as so-called Local Agenda 21 processes, have been initiated worldwide. While their success is contested, it seems that new forms of exchange among citizens, politicians, and experts have evolved that would not have come into being without a Local Agenda 21 process. This exchange is crucial, because wise policy making on sustainability issues requires both topic expertise and moral judgment. Citizen participation procedures at the local level are faced with the difficult task of bringing together knowledge of local cultures, expert insights, and ethical reasoning. In the first part of this chapter, we focus on the role of citizen participation in democratic societies. Against that background, we discuss the contribution of the New Participatory Instruments (NP!). In the second part, we describe focus groups as an especially valuable participatory assessment technique for combining expert insights with laypersons' valuations. In the third part, we describe a Swiss citizen participation project in the area of local climate policy using a focus group setting. In the fourth part, we comment on success criteria for participatory instruments deduced from this project and from other experiences with NPI. We conclude that NPI fit both representative and direct democratic systems. We perceive a pressing need for transparent institutional mechanisms that assure that ideas and recommendations from voluntary, non-binding forms of politics enter into formal political decision-making. Chapter 2 of the book "History of the Catholic Church from the Renaissance to the French Revolution," by James MacCaffrey is presented. It explores the religious revolution in Germany led by Martin Luther and in Switzerland led by Ulrich Zwingli. It also discusses the efforts and challenges experienced by the Lutherans and Zwinglians to spread their doctrines.

Chapter X of the book "At The Villa Rose," by A. E. W. Mason is presented. It explores the newspaper advertisement intended to arrest the suspect Celia Harland who is alleged to be hiding in Geneva, Switzerland. Hanaud's purpose not to use his name on the advertisement is provided. It also discusses the woman who, if not stabbed in the heart, would elucidate the issues connecting the murder.

Chapter 2 of the book "The Antiquity of Man," by Charles Lyell is presented. It cites the works of art in Danish Peat-Mosses and the remains of three periods of vegetation in the Peat. It highlights the embedded remains of Mammalia of recent species and the chronological computations of the date of the bronze and stone periods in Switzerland.

Chapter XVII of the book "The Autobiography of a Journalist," vol. 1, by William James Stillman is presented. This chapter cites the author's misadventure in Switzerland. It relates how his sketching excursion on the Alps with a co-artist turned into a disastrous trip because of the latter's moody disposition and their conflicting views.

Using constructivist principles and autonomous learning techniques the ELP has pioneered innovative and cutting edge approaches to learning languages that can be applied to learning across the spectrum. Although articles on the success of the ELP project have appeared in some academic journals, "Perspectives from the European Language Portfolio" is the first book to report on and contextualise the project's innovative techniques for a wider educational research audience. During the last ten years the ELP has increasingly become a reference tool for language learning and teaching in primary, secondary and tertiary educational settings all around Europe. The editors of this volume believe that there is a need to reflect on the significant contribution that the ELP has delivered for language learning and teaching, and to critically evaluate its achievements. This volume offers a range of investigations from theoretical studies to practical cases around these issues, and includes: (1) relevant contributions of the ELP to language pedagogy; (2) assessing the impact of the ELP on pedagogical research and practice; (3) exploring and defining pathways for future developments; and (4) Reflective learning. The collaboration between CERN and Egypt has entered a more active phase and is seen as particularly important to limit the brain drain Egypt is facing. It will also improve communication between North and South and help in the technology transfer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chapter 11 of the book "The Grey Book" is presented. It talks on the reaction of the Federation of the Protestant Churches of Switzerland regarding the serious implications of the ill-treatment of the Jewish population in Germany. It also presents several letters and declarations from the protestant churches of Switzerland addressing the danger of anti-Semitic influences.

This paper reviews issues and trends in inservice teacher education, focusing on state-of-the-art activities, criticisms levied against inservice programs, objectives, structure, basic models, and program evaluation methods. Trends identified focus on efforts to improve programs, innovations, program length, teacher involvement in program development, and the need for systematic preparation and further education.
