This report reviews the problems of protecting nature in a heavily industrialized democracy such as the United States. Factors contributing to the establishment of protected areas in the United States are traced from the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872 to the present. Arguments in defense of wilderness areas consider nature as: (1) a reservoir of normal ecological processes, (2) a sustainer of biological diversity, (3) a formative influence on the national character, (4) a church, (5) a guardian of mental health, and (6) an educational asset in developing environmental responsibility. Diverse agencies, programs, and efforts exist at all levels. The National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the National Wilderness Preservation System function on the federal level. Coastal zone management and land use laws protect natural areas on the state level, city and county parks serve as protected areas on local levels, and private organizations such as the Sierra Club also contribute to wilderness preservation. Problems arise from the conflict between economic development and nature preservation, and the popularity of nature areas which leads to their destruction. Programs in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, East Africa, Europe, the Soviet Union, and Canada are also described. (KC)

This book examines different notions of a learning society and the changes in adult education theory and practice that will be required to create a learning society. Recent developments in the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, in other countries are cited as evidence that creating a learning society will require new forms of thinking about the theory and practice of adult education. The following are among the topics discussed in the book's six chapters: the relationship between discourse, power, knowledge, and governmentality; poststructuralism and postmodernism; economic, cultural, technological, and demographic changes that have contributed to the growth in interest in the notions of a learning society and lifelong learning; implications of the recent shift from focus on inputs (adult education and its provision) to focus on outputs (learning and learners); ways provision of adult education has changed to support access and participation, open and distance learning, and assessment and accreditation of outcomes in an increasing number of learning settings; the adoption of neo- and post-Fordist models of organizational development and the role of the reflective practitioner as a model for professional development; and contemporary trends and differing notions of a learning society. "Proceedings of International Conference on Social and Education Sciences" includes full papers presented at the International Conference on Social and Education Sciences (IConSES), which took place on October 13-16, 2022, in Austin, Texas. The aim of the conference is to offer opportunities to share ideas, discuss theoretical and practical issues, and to connect with the leaders in the fields of education and social sciences. This document consists of 12 papers that, together, summarize the key issues underpinning future research and policy development related to intergenerational programs (IPs). "Introduction" (Alan Hatton-Yeo) discusses the project out of which the papers developed. "A General Assessment of IP Initiatives in the Countries Involved" (Ann-Kristin Bostrum, Alan Hatton-Yeo, Toshio Oshako, Yukiko Sawano) considers the historical and cultural roots of IPs, the role of IPs as instruments for solving priority social problems in given countries, the status of IPs, the training of IP professionals, and future needs and assessment of IPs. "Public Policy and Research Recommendations: An International Perspective" (Alan Hatton-Yeo, Jumbo Klerq, Toshio Oshako, Sally Newman) presents general recommendations, recommendations concerning four specific impact areas of IPs in public policy (economy and employment, society, lifelong learning, health), and recommendations concerning IP development and implementation strategies. Papers from an international conference on language teaching/learning are presented by topic and grouped under seven sections. An introductory section contains two papers on cultural diversity and world English. The second section, on teacher development, contains papers on these topics: teacher development and socialization; teachers' responses to questions about instruction; characteristics of a good language lesson; teaching students to understand instruction; students' reasons for poor English skills; cross-cultural aspects of the teacher's role; and an instructional materials development workshop. Papers on cultural issues in section 5 include these topics: multiculturalism in the classroom; comparing cultures through critical thinking; authority and individualism in Japan and the United States; a study trip to France; setting the stage in kindergarten; comparative social studies; folklore in ESL instruction; Model United Nations; global issues; geography instruction; gender issues; and English variation. The final section contains five papers on the Linguapax Program of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). As a part of the teacher licensure program at the graduate level at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), the M.Ed. licensure candidate is required to complete an action research project during a 3-semester-hour course that coincides with the 9-semester-hour student teaching experience or with school employment. This course, Education 5900 Culminating Experience, requires the student to implement an action research plan designed through (a) the Education 5010 Methods of Educational Research course, (b) a required learning assessment required during student teaching, or (c) a newly-designed project. The course is, also, taken by elementary and secondary teachers who are, already, licensed to teach. The action research projects, from spring semester 2016 (part 2), are presented. This book proposes a new, multidisciplinary theory for explaining and predicting current and future patterns of women's choice between employment and family work. Chapters 1 and 2 present main tenets of preference theory and explain the need for the theory. Chapters 3 through 8 elaborate four principal tenets of preference theory. Chapter 3 identifies five historical changes producing a qualitatively new scenario for women in prosperous societies in the 21st century. Chapter 4 looks at polarization of sex-role preferences and behavior. Chapter 5 looks at the same topics to see if younger generations display less polarization and then considers whether longitudinal studies reveal stability of work-lifestyle preferences across life history. Chapter 6 sets out principal differences among three preference groups (home-centered, adaptive, and work-centered); considers sources of differences; explores contextual constraints; and outlines consequences for differential policy-responsiveness. Chapter 7 reviews research evidence on marriage markets, especially how women use them as avenues for marital mobility and alternative "career ladders" to labor markets. Chapter 8 considers national and international governmental fiscal and social policies, identifying those that support each preference group, and family-friendly policies developed by employers and trade unions to see whether they are, or could be, designed to offer benefits to all groups. Chapter 9 offers a preliminary outline of how the theory applies to men. Chapter 10 summarizes results, suggests the theory offers a new perspective on theoretical and research puzzles, and argues for a new approach to cross-national comparisons of women's employment. This collection of papers on the intercultural communication between the United States and Japan is divided into three sections. The first section, "Introduction to Intercultural Communication," describes the background of the relationship between Japan and the United States, the history of the study of intercultural communication, and some of the problems related to it--barriers that make communication between Americans and Japanese more difficult. The second section, "Influences on Culture and Cultural Influences," includes seven papers on various aspects of communication between Americans and Japanese. The third section, "Japanese Students' Knowledge of American Culture," is made up of five studies related to Japanese students' contact with Americans and American culture, their knowledge of American culture, and the problems that they face in the United States. The book also includes a bibliography compiled for teachers of English in Japan who are interested in the influence of culture and intercultural communication on language teaching and learning. (MS)

This volume, the second in a two-volume work, builds on an international study of the research university in Germany, Britain, France, the United States and Japan, to explore the role and function of the research university and the relationship between teaching, research and graduate study. Part 1 lays the foundation for comparative analysis by depicting national configurations of advanced education and research organization. Chapter 1 establishes the 19th Century baseline for cross-national comparison by depicting how German universities developed and expressed a research outlook. Chapter 2 depicts the evolution and current structure of British higher education that highlights the strain placed on "post-graduate" education and its research underpinnings by nationalization of previously autonomous universities. Chapter 3 considers research activity and training within the high exceptionalism of French higher education. Chapter 4 looks at the United States and its competitive graduate schools; chapter 5 at the relationship between graduate education and industry in Japan. In Part 2 the concept of a research-teaching-study nexus is established as an organizing idea. Chapter 6 sets forth fragmenting forces. Chapter 7 examines current versions of the Humboldtian ideal. The final chapter points to the necessity of basing analysis and reform on a knowledge or inquiry model of modern systems of higher education. An index is included. The present document on the Sixty Years of CONFINTEA was inspired by the desire to register the long fecund history of a global movement which has spanned six decades. Official records and documents produced by and for the conferences, in particular the final reports, elaborated by UNESCO were used as an important source. This process of historical recovery became equally important as a means of undertaking a transversal reading of the development of the concept of adult education, embracing the post-war years, the period of decolonization, the Cold War and the attack on the twin towers in New York. In Knoll's words, it "(…) demonstrates the changes in perceptions of adult education, from literacy to lifelong learning, in which adult education is seen as both part of the continuum of education and an entity in itself." In addition to the CONFINTEA documents, other documents were included which possess a fundamental link with the Conferences and what they represent in terms of the struggle for the right to education, in the spirit of education for all and in the perspective of lifelong learning and education. Essays focusing on issues concerning youth education and unemployment problems are presented in this document. It is divided into three general areas. The first, Youth Unemployment in Western Industrial Countries, reviews general dimensions of the problem, the cyclical hypothesis, the demand hypothesis, the supply hypothesis, disaggregating American data, conclusions on causes, policies to combat youth unemployment, and educational policies. The second, Comparative National Experiences, focuses on youth education and unemployment problems in Great Britain, West Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Japan, Mexico, and South Asia. And finally, an essay by Martin Trow, Reflections on Youth Problems and Policies in the U.S., emphasizes aspects of the youth unemployment problem that are relevant particularly to the U.S. He discusses the secondary labor market, the hidden economy, cultural unemployment, types of youth and policies for youth, and types of secondary labor market jobs. The status of student political activism in the 1970s and 1980s in such nations as the United States, Britain, India, Japan, Italy, Canada, West Germany, Greece, Zambia and Latin America is examined. The volume consists of 13 chapters written by scholars who all agree that student activism is not now at peak levels of the 1960s, yet student movements continue to exist and student politics remains an important issue. Several conclusions are cited such as: (1) most of the literature on student activism resulted from the student political activities of the 1960s; (2) there is a dramatic difference between the student activism between the industrial nations and the Third World; (3) students in the Third World nations usually have direct political effect because of the lack of established political structures often present in developing nations; (4) student attitudes still rest well to the left of the general population; and (5) the economic situation in the 1970s has had an impact on the student population, in general tending to diminish activist movements in the industrialized nations. Basic elements of the higher education system are considered, along with variations across nations (the United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan, Italy, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Australia, Canada, the United States, Poland, Yugoslavia, Mexico, and Thailand). Three basic elements of the organization of higher education system are identified: the way work tasks are arranged, primary norms and values, and the distribution of legitimate power throughout the system. Attention is directed to: national support structures for academics; the organization of academic work around knowledge; the division of academic labor by discipline and by sectors/institutional types; the foundations of academic beliefs and disciplinary points of view; integration in higher education through bureaucracy, politics, professions, and the market; and the way in which change occurs, including the contradiction between discipline and system, and the process of differentiation. The efforts of internal interest groups to do their work, protect their functions, and react to pressure are also addressed. It is concluded that the clash of social values in higher education will require considerable adjustments, and the systems most likely to prosper will be those that divide power, support variety, and allow ambiguity. Chapter 3 of the book "Five Days in August: How World War II Became a Nuclear War" is presented. The chapter focuses on the inclusion of the atomic bomb as a special element of the strategy of shock by the U.S. against Japan during the Second World War. The chapter also addresses the two varying psychological interpretations of the bomb, as a tactical tool and as a "world-shaking event," and how such interpretations changed the discourse surrounding its planned use.

Chapter 6 of the book "Spiritual and Political Dimensions of Nonviolence and Peace" is presented. Article 9 in Japan's constitution, which renounces war and encourages the use of nonviolent means to end conflict, is explored. Actions of the U.S. and the Japanese government contradicting Article 9 are discussed. Also included is an assessment of U.S. policy in Asia, with focus on North Korea and South Korea. A proposal to award the Noble Peace Prize to the Japanese citizens is mentioned.

Chapter XIII of the book "The Illustrious Prince," by Phillips Oppenheim is presented. The story continues as Penelope Morse and Prince Maiyo were talking about the courtship of the guy from Japan to the young lady of America. The chapter also details on the conversation of Miss Morse and the prince concerning the battle of Japan and the U.S.

This volume presents 6 papers by 22 labor economists who examine and address worker displacement in 10 industrialized countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Netherlands, United States). "Summary and Synthesis" (Peter J. Kuhn) discusses these four categories of lessons learned from panel data analysis: (1) institutions affecting displaced workers; (2) methodological lessons for study of displaced workers and cross-national labor market research; (3) exceptions to and universals about within-country patterns; and (4) patterns across countries. "Displaced Workers in the United States and the Netherlands" (Jaap H. Abbring et al.) discusses relevant institutions and provides an empirical analysis of the incidence of displacement and labor market transitions and earnings changes induced by displacement. "Worker Displacement in Japan and Canada" (Masahiro Abe et al.) describes main modes of labor adjustment, situating worker displacement in the broader context of how firms adjust to declines in product demand; describes legal and social institutions most likely to affect the displacement process and prevalent general labor market conditions; and analyzes frequency of displacement and its consequences. "They Get Knocked Down. Do They Get Up Again?" (Jeff Borland et al.) highlights which groups in Britain and Australia are most likely to experience displacement, which are most likely to get back into work, and earnings changes associated with reentry into work. "Worker Displacement in France and Germany" (Stefan Bender et al.) focuses on workers whose separation results from closure of the employing firm (France) or plant (Germany); considers non-employment durations; and describes earnings changes. "Employment Protection and the Consequences for Displaced Workers" (Karsten Albaek et al.) compares outcomes of workers in Belgium and Denmark displaced from a long-tenure job to identify how they differ and whether they can be attributed to differences in firing provisions (higher firing costs in Belgium).
