Graph Forty years have passed since the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, a milestone event in the history of volcanology, comparable only with the 1902 Mont Pelée eruption in terms of influence on the further development of the science of volcanology. Richard Waitt demonstrated that YES, there is at least one aspect that was left undocumented in sufficient detail before, that is what the survivor witnesses, those present accidentally or on duty within the influence circle of the eruption, observed and experienced personally, and sometimes literally felt with their own body. The paper defends the infallibilist account of evidential support in Knowledge and its limits from Jessica Brown's objections in her book Fallibilism: Evidence and Knowledge. (1) By the standards of abductive methodology, Brown's arguments are ineffective because she offers no developed alternative account of evidential support. (2) Most of her objections apply to the standard probabilistic structure of my account; they are not specific to its distinctively knowledge-first features. (3) Brown's objection from 'infelicity data' is analogous to one from such data to standard accounts of deductive validity as truth-preservation. (4) Contrary to Brown's assumption, my use of excusability in discussion of sceptical scenarios involves no attempt to give it a precise conceptual analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While fallibilism has been the dominant view in epistemology in recent times, the field has witnessed the rise of a new form of infallibilism. In a recent book, Jessica Brown has taken on the task of mounting a systematic defence of fallibilism against this new infallibilism. She argues that new infallibilism incurs several problematic commitments that fallibilism can avoid. In addition, the key data points that infallibilists have adduced in support of their view can be accommodated by fallibilism, giving fallibilism the upper hand. This paper develops a rejoinder on behalf of new infallibilism. It explores ways in which new infallibilists can avoid the problematic commitments Brown identifies and provides reason to think that some of the data points supporting new infallibilism cannot be as readily handled by fallibilism as Brown would have us think. According to a version of Infallibilism, if one knows that p, then one's evidence for p entails p. In her Fallibilism: Evidence and Knowledge (2018, OUP), Jessica Brown has recently developed two arguments against Infalliblism, which can both be presented in the form of a dilemma. According to the first dilemma, the infallibilist can avoid scepticism only if she endorses the claim that if one knows that p then p is part of one's evidence for p. But this seems to come at the cost of making infelicitous claims. According to the second dilemma, the infallibilist cannot make sense of the phenomenon of defeat unless she rejects closure. In this paper, we argue that the infallibilist has the conceptual tools to resist both dilemmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
