Abstract

Graph Forty years have passed since the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, a milestone event in the history of volcanology, comparable only with the 1902 Mont Pelée eruption in terms of influence on the further development of the science of volcanology. Richard Waitt demonstrated that YES, there is at least one aspect that was left undocumented in sufficient detail before, that is what the survivor witnesses, those present accidentally or on duty within the influence circle of the eruption, observed and experienced personally, and sometimes literally felt with their own body. From this point of view, Waitt's chronicle is a precious document about the eruption, its successive phases and related processes in their full complexity. [Extracted from the article]
