The Internet of Things (IoT) market has expanded significantly, encompassing various sectors like home, retail, manufacturing, and transportation, with millions of devices and servers dedicated to monitoring real-world aspects. Regardless of the field, all IoT devices share the characteristic of transitioning from initial ownership to target application ownership to fulfill their intended functions, a process known as onboarding, which requires fast, reliable, and secure interaction between devices and servers. Two distinct approaches to onboarding, trusted and untrusted installers, exist, with trusted installers employing configurator tools to establish trust between devices and servers, while untrusted installers rely on mechanisms like ownership vouchers for authentication, offering scalability and parallel device onboarding.

As hyperscalers such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon play an increasingly important role in today’s Internet, they are also capable of manipulating probe packets that traverse their privately owned and operated backbones. As a result, standard traceroute-based measurement techniques are no longer a reliable means for assessing network connectivity in these global-scale cloud provider infrastructures. In response to these developments, we present a new empirical approach for elucidating connectivity in these private backbone networks. Our approach relies on using only “lightweight” (i.e., simple, easily interpretable, and readily available) measurements, but requires applying “heavyweight” mathematical techniques for analyzing these measurements. In particular, we describe a new method that uses network latency measurements and relies on concepts from Riemannian geometry (i.e., Ricci curvature) to assess the characteristics of the connectivity fabric of a given network infrastructure. We complement this method with a visualization tool that generates a novel manifold view of a network’s delay space. We demonstrate our approach by utilizing latency measurements from available vantage points and virtual machines running in datacenters of three large cloud providers to study different aspects of connectivity in their private backbones and show how our generated manifold views enable us to expose and visualize critical aspects of this connectivity. This article investigates the leader-following successive lag consensus (SLC) for nonlinear multi-agent systems (NMASs) via the observer-based event-triggered control (OBETC), in which two scenarios including constant consensus delay and time-varying consensus delay are considered. Since the system states might not be directly available in actual scenes, the state estimation method is utilized for followers to track their full information. Based on the relative state, a class of distributed event-triggered control protocols is constructed, where the event-triggered strategy is introduced such that each follower can determine the broadcasting time to its neighbors. Obviously, these designed control protocols considerably lessen the expense over communication networks and the frequency of protocol updates. Furthermore, with the aid of the Lyapunov function method, a series of sufficient conditions for guaranteeing the leader-following SLC of NMASs is obtained. We investigate the security of Diffie-Hellman key exchange as used in popular Internet protocols and find it to be less secure than widely believed. First, we present Logjam, a novel flaw in TLS that lets a man-in-the-middle downgrade connections to "export-grade" Diffie-Hellman. To carry out this attack, we implement the number field sieve discrete logarithm algorithm. After a week-long precomputation for a specified 512-bit group, we can compute arbitrary discrete logarithms in that group in about a minute. We find that 82% of vulnerable servers use a single 512-bit group, and that 8.4% of Alexa Top Million HTTPS sites are vulnerable to the attack. In response, major browsers have changed to reject short groups. We go on to consider Diffie-Hellman with 768- and 1024-bit groups. We estimate that even in the 1024-bit case, the computations are plausible given nation-state resources. A small number of fixed or standardized groups are used by millions of servers; performing precomputation for a single 1024-bit group would allow passive eavesdropping on 18% of popular HTTPS sites, and a second group would allow decryption of traffic to 66% of IPsec VPNs and 26% of SSH servers. A close reading of published NSA leaks shows that the agency's attacks on VPNs are consistent with having achieved such a break.
