The article presents summaries of invited papers read at the winter meeting of the British Grassland Society in London, England on December 4, 1974. The theme of the meeting was "winter feeding for beef production." It is reported in one of the summaries that beef producers are facing a crisis situation with a collapse in returns to the producer; in consequence most producers are confused and are uncertain of the future. The crisis is caused by a combination of escalating costs and falling returns. Rising concentrate prices have been the main factor in increasing costs in many systems, a direct reflection of high world cereal prices, which are likely to continue in the foreseeable future.

I also thank members of our advisory committees and the many researchers and institutional leaders who have engaged with NHMRC during our national consultation on gender disparities in NHMRC funding outcomes. A conference paper about a proposal to replace the Division III of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, which was considered and voted upon by a Special Committee on By-Laws for the Nomenclature Section at the XVIII International Botanical Congress in Melbourne in 2011. Earlier this year, we organized a US National Science Foundation-funded community workshop (award #2209643) to explore the intersection between scholarly publishing and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Technology has given us many tools to communicate; new publication formats such as preprints and data papers will be essential to modernizing how we share our science. We need to think more broadly and creatively about how we communicate science - what qualifies as a publication, how we assign value to different types of publications, and how our professional incentive and reward systems manipulate that value. Information about several papers discussed at the symposium entitled Mitochondrial DNA Sequences in Plant Phylogenetics and Evolution in Vienna, Austria on July 17-23, 2005 is presented. The symposium featured seven papers including the studies by H. Ong, C. de Pamphilis and J. D. Palmer. The ability of land plant mitochondrial genomes to export or import DNA is discoursed. The article announces on the 7th International conference on numerical methods for thermal problems. At the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America, investigators of ecosystem science and biogeochemistry gathered in a series of sessions sponsored by the National Science Foundation to examine what is known about the coupling of chemical elements in biochemistry and thus in global biogeochemical cycles. As an introduction to the topic, this paper offers some philosophical thoughts about the origins and implications of coupled biogeochemical cycles on Earth. The chemical characteristics of Earth have carried the imprint of biology since the first appearance of life more than 3.5 billion years ago. Movements of about 30 chemical elements essential to life are coupled, so that the behavior of one element can often be used to predict the behavior of other elements - in both the natural and human-perturbed settings of the world. The coupling of biochemical elements stems from basic stoichiometry (the relative quantities of chemical elements in living biomass), the oxidation-reduction or "redox" reactions (in which one substance is oxidized [loses electrons] and another is reduced [gains electrons]) of metabolic activity, and chelation (in which a metal ion binds to an organic compound). Many anthropogenic environmental problems - climate change, eutrophication, acid precipitation, metal pollution - originate from the release of non-stoichiometric and toxic quantities of chemical elements to the environment. Geoengineering pro-posals as solutions to certain global environmental problems must be consistent with the underlying constraints of coupled biogeochemical cycles. As a part of the 2000-01 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute, the Leadership Institute Fellows conducted a faculty development workshop for department chairpersons and program directors during the 2001 ADEA Annual Session. A central premise of the workshop was that successful chairpersons and program directors are both effective leaders and effective managers and that leadership and management involve complementary activities. The workshop was casebased. The ADEA Leadership Institute Fellows developed the cases and led roundtable discussions of each case. A group facilitator led large group debriefings to apply management and leadership theory to each case. The purpose of this paper is to review leadership challenges and management concepts as they were applied in a case-based faculty development workshop. The program was structured to address leadership challenges relating to managing people, mission management, conflict recognition, and conflict management. The cases were developed to relate management theories to situations in academic administration. The situations were designed to encourage debate from numerous perspectives. Each case presented general dilemmas that could be addressed from the vantage point of the dean, chair, or individual faculty member. Reinforcing discussion followed and included identification of central issues, key management concepts, and action alternatives. Because of the breadth of possible discussion, group case analyses at the workshop and in the appended case reviews explore only one perspective. This overview article introduces concepts of leadership and management that provide the foundation for analysis of three case studies that follow. These cases address common leadership and management issues in academic dentistry through three typical cases: the frustrated faculty member (case 1), the misdirected faculty member (case 2), and the faculty member stuck in the middle (case 3). This article reports that the International Conference "Rhizosphere 2004: Perspectives and Challenges: A Tribute to Lorenz Hiltner," was held in Munich, Germany, from September 12-17, 2004. It was initiated as a main activity of COS, an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research was a European initiative in 2004 to create a network of scientists from all disciplines involved in research of the plant root-soil interface. The session was organized to provide an overview on the role of the rhizosphere in terms of the behavior of both organic and inorganic pollutants in soil-plant-microbe systems, and to explore the prospects of manipulating the rhizosphere for control of pollutants and remediation of contaminated soils. Currently, there are only a few practical applications of such rhizotechnology. A main limitation is the lack of detailed understanding of the processes that a involved, making plant microbe-based remedial actions hardly predictable. Some papers addressed the effects of altered chemical milieus in the rhizosphere on metal or radiocesium mobility and/or phytoavailability.
