Fine powders of ZnFe[sub 2]O[sub 4] with an average particle size of 10 nm and inversion parameter of 0.21 were synthesized by the aerogel procedure. Portions of the powders were calcined in air at 500 and 800 °C and other portions were ball-milled for 10 h. The materials were characterized by x-ray diffractometry, vibrating sample, and SQUID magnetometry, Mössbauer spectrometry, and low temperature calorimetry. Upon calcination the powders underwent significant changes in grain size, inversion parameter, and hence magnetic properties. The magnetic state of the as-produced and calcined samples is best described as disordered and highly dependent on temperature. Upon ball-milling the grain size varied widely and the inversion parameter attained a value of 0.55. The magnetic properties of the ball-milled sample are similar to those of ferrimagnetic MgFe[sub 2]O[sub 4] powders having comparable grain size and inversion parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water managers have been attempting to operate reservoirs in a “best water management strategy” to meet specific project objectives since the first man-made impoundment was constructed. When it was realized, several years ago, that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must have the capability to analyze the operation of large multiple reservoir systems for water quality, the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) was funded to develop a computer program to meet this need. “HEC-5Q, Simulation of Flood Control and Conservation Systems” computer model has the unique capabilities to accept user-specified water quantity and quality needs systemwide, and to decide how to regulate a network of reservoirs. The decision criteria are programmed to consider flood control, hydropower, instream flow (municipal, industrial, irrigation, water supply, fish habitat), and water-quality requirements. In a double blind crossover study oral prednisolone was compared with intramuscular depot triamcinolone in the treatment of 20 patients with severe chronic asthma. A short term study comparing each treatment over four weeks showed only minor differences in therapeutic efficacy, but at the end of 24 week periods on each of the two treatments triamcinolone was significantly more effective than prednisolone in terms of forced expiratory volume in one second and forced vital capacity. Better control of asthma was accompanied by a significant fall in weight and some evidence of reduced adrenal suppression (improved cortisol response following a short tetracosactrin test). Side effects, including menstrual irregularities, muscle pain, and hirsuitism, were, however, more common during treatment with triamcinolone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research was designed to evaluate the workplace protection factors of Health and Safety Executive Approved, negative pressure full-facepiece dust respirators, during asbestos stripping. A standard method to measure the concentration of asbestos fibres inside full-facepiece respirators has been developed and the workplace protection factors have been calculated from the data obtained. The respirators in this study are approved for use by the Health and Safety Executive in concentrations of up 900 times the Control Limit [HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE, Guidance Note EH 41 (1985)] but the preliminary test results suggest that this level is inappropriately high for this type of respiratory protective equipment. This paper describes work carried out in the laboratory and in the workplace, to quantify any difference which may be caused by the use of an aluminium cowl when sampling amosite. Simultaneous side-by-side comparisons were made of samples collected using an aluminium cowl and an open Gelman sampling head. On the basis of both sets of results it appears that the use of an aluminium conducting cowl during the sampling of amosite does not have a significant effect on the measured fibre concentrations within the range 0.04–31 f ml and 0.33–2.25 f ml for static and personal samples, respectively. One hundred and three patients with small cell lung carcinoma were stratified according to stage of disease (47 limited disease, 56 extensive disease) and then randomised to receive etoposide 300 mg/m2 alone for two days or a combination (VAC) of vincristine 1 mg/m2, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) 50 mg/m2, and cyclophosphamide 1000 mg/m2. The drugs were given at three week intervals. Patients were assessed after three cycles of treatment and continued with the same regimen if in complete remission and with the alternative regimen if in partial remission; they were withdrawn if the disease had progressed. Twenty four patients (23%) achieved complete remission and this occurred more often when patients were receiving VAC (19 of 82) than etoposide (5 of 75). There was no difference, however, in overall survival between those initially treated with etoposide and those having combination chemotherapy, whether for limited disease (both 8 months) or extensive disease (7 and 5.5 months). Toxicity was less with etoposide. Survival was disappointing, especially with limited disease, even in patients who showed a complete response to treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Heptachlor and cis-chlordane are converted to their corresponding photoisomers and several minor products on exposure to low intensity (longwave) ultra-violet light. This photolysis can also take place on plant leaves in the presence of sunlight or uv light. Photo- cis-chlordane and photoheptachlor are more toxic to fish. Photoheptachlor is about 20, 47, and 264 times more toxic than heptachlor to, respectively, rats, bluegill, and goldfish. Photo- cis-chlordane is about 10 times less toxic to Daphnia pulex.
