Purpose: Buckwheat is a major traditional crop of hilly regions, capable of growing in adverse climatic conditions. During the survey, it was reported that prolonged consumption of buckwheat leads to digestive problems and numbness. The present study was conducted to study the effect of γ-irradiations on buckwheat to make them suitable for daily consumption. Materials and methods: Buckwheat seeds were irradiated by 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 Gy doses of γ-radiations, to access the phytoconstituent variability using standard methods. Results: Significant (p < 0.05) increase in total phenol, total flavonoid, total antioxidant activity, rutin, β-carotene, iron, calcium up to 6.23, 16.48, 18.62, 19.06, 8.08, 47.66, 32.74% in common buckwheat and 9.58, 16.66, 39.16, 9.19, 9.00, 53.99, 36.75% in tartary buckwheat was found by increasing doses of γ-radiations up to 800 Gy. Significant decrease was found in phytate, tannin, and oxalate content up to 18.92, 17.95, 15.32% in common buckwheat and 24.73, 19.72, 24.07% in tartary buckwheat. Conclusions: It can be concluded that 800 Gy dose of γ-radiation, maximally increased the nutritional value by significant (p < 0.05) increase in nutrients and their bioavailability. This makes buckwheat more amenable for daily consumption to fulfill RDA, by Himalayan population depending on traditional foods without any digestive problem. Furthermore, significant increase in rutin by γ-radiations will be useful to fulfill the demand of cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The upper part of the Harudi Formation of the Kutch basin in Gujarat, western India, has recently yielded a heretofore undocumented assemblage of elasmobranchs, including extinct sand tiger sharks Brachycarcharias lerichei and Striatolamia macrota, extinct tiger sharks Galeocerdo eaglesomei and G. clarkensis, requiem shark Carcharhinus mancinae, as well as sawfish Pristis sp. A bony fish taxon represented by Trichiurus sp. was also recovered. After a 43-years gap, this study provides a taxonomic update on the middle Eocene sharks of Kutch. Their coexistence with the larger benthic foraminifera Nummulites obtusus and planktonic foraminifera Orbulinoides beckmanni dates this fish fauna to 40–41.03 Ma, which corresponds to the time frame of the Bartonian transgression and extreme warming event Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO). The MECO elasmobranch assemblage of Kutch comes from shelf settings with bathymetry of 30–60 m, and it differs from those associated with Paleocene–Eocene hyperthermal events and deposited in the bay complex. It seems that G. clarkensis and C. mancinae emerged in Kutch during MECO. The global stratigraphic distribution demonstrates that B. lerichei and S. macrota originated in North America, and their appearance in Kutch expands their geographic range into the eastern Tethys realm, possibly as a result of MECO-linked Bartonian/Kirther transgression. This study investigates the inheritance pattern of petalous and apetalous traits in yellow sarson (Brassica rapa var yellow sarson) and its significance for breeding efforts. Utilizing three crucial crosses between petalous (Pant Sweta, Pant Girija, YSH0401) and 'apetalous' parents, we observed the absence of apetalous plants in the F1 generation, indicating dominant inheritance of petalous plants. The F2 generation consistently displayed a 3:1 ratio of petalous to apetalous plants, confirming the dominance of the petalous trait. Chi-squared tests on each generation supported this conclusion. Backcrosses with petalous parents yielded no fruit, reinforcing the dominance of the petalous trait. Chi-squared tests on these backcrosses further confirmed the dominance inheritance pattern. Conversely, backcrosses with apetalous parents consistently exhibited a 1:1 ratio, highlighting the recessive nature of the apetalous trait. The study underscores the importance of understanding the inheritance pattern of petalous and apetalous traits in B. rapa var yellow sarson crop, as it has implications for breeding goals. Knowledge on trait inheritance can guide future breeding strategies, facilitating the transfer of the apetalous trait as needed. Background: Seed shape in chickpea, a less known but not a trivial trait to study, as the possibility to include it in applied breeding aspect is yet to be deciphered. The present study mainly focuses on the study of seed shape classification and its interrelationship with seed quality parameters. Methods: The present study was conducted at the N.E. Borlaug Crop Research Centre, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. Seed shapes in chickpea were classified into distinct classes like angular, globular and owl headed types, using set of genotypes that constituted all the three seed shapes and corresponding hybrids obtained by crossing them. Result: The codominance of radicle length and dominance nature of shape of chalazal end was observed in a definite pattern. Angular types were dominant over owl-head and globular types, whereas the globular type was dominant over owl-head type. Angular and globular types had low and high protein content respectively. Globular types would be a key to merge the bi-directionally acting seed traits like protein content and seed weight. From our observations seed shape can be a potential criteria to select for seed protein content. The molasse deposits in the Indus Basin of India-Asia collision zone (Indus Suture Zone) of Ladakh, NW Himalaya, preserve a record of orogenic sedimentation associated with uplift and erosion of the southern margin of Asia in the course of ongoing India–Eurasia collision. Fossils from these continental deposits are scarce but hold important clues to the early history of India-Asia collision. Here we describe a small collection of dental remains of cyprinids, a family of freshwater fishes, from the Late Eocene Liyan Formation exposed in a high altitude (>5000 m) locality in the Indus Suture Zone of Eastern Ladakh. The find assumes significance since, unlike the Liyan Formation, most other molassic deposits of Ladakh rest unconformably over the Ladakh Batholith and are much younger (Late Oligocene/Early Miocene). The Liyan cyprinids, which represent the oldest record of Cyprinidae in India, suggest fluvial connections with contemporary Eocene ecosystems in Mainland Asia where this family originated in the middle Eocene or earlier. Dispersal of cyprinids from the Mainland Asia into the Indus Suture Zone of Ladakh took place from Tibet via alluvial drainage of the paleo-Indus river during floods or high runoff following the India-Asia collision. Various phytoconstituents in seeds and leaves were analyzed.The antioxidant, phenol, flavonoid, β-carotene, iron, calcium, lysine and arginine were increased significantly (<5%) with increasing doses of γ-radiations up to 10 kGy, whereas, anti-nutrients (tannin, phytic acid and oxalate) decreased significantly (<5%). γ-radiation @ 10 kGy is the best for the enhancement of phytoconstituents in buckwheat seeds from a nutrition point of view. Phytoconstituents in buckwheat leaves and irradiated seed progeny were positively co-related with M1 seeds.It can be concluded that the buckwheat seeds treated with a 10 kGy dose of γ-radiation are the best to produce green leaves as hara saag, and progeny seeds for preparation of flour. Investigations of long-term exercise interventions in humans to reverse obesity is expensive and is hampered by poor compliance and confounders. In the present study, we investigated intrahepatic and muscle fat, visceral and subcutaneous fat pads, plasma metabolic profile and skeletal muscle inflammatory markers in response to 12-week aerobic exercise in an obese rodent model. Six-week-old male Wistar rats (n=20) were randomized to chow-fed control (Control, n=5), sedentary high-fat diet (HFD, n=5), chow-fed exercise (Exercise, n=5) and HFD-fed exercise (HFD+Exercise, n=5) groups. The exercise groups were subjected to 12 weeks of motorized treadmill running at a speed of 18 m/min for 30 min/day. Differences in post-intervention measures were assessed by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), adjusted for baseline bodyweight and pre-intervention measures, where available. Post-hoc analyses were performed with Bonferroni correction. Plasma metabolic profile was worsened and fat pads, ectopic fat in muscle and liver and inflammatory markers in skeletal muscle were elevated in sedentary HFD-fed animals relative to chow-fed controls. HFD+Exercise animals had significantly lower leptin (P=0.0004), triglycerides (P=0.007), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR; P=0.065), intramyocellular lipids (IMCLs; P=0.003), intrahepatic lipids (IHLs; P<0.0001), body fat% (P=0.001), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT; P<0.0001), visceral adipose (P<0.0001) and total fat mass (P<0.0001), relative to sedentary HFD-fed animals, despite onlymodestly lower bodyweight. Purpose: The vascular blood flow in brown adipose tissue (BAT) is important for handling triglyceride clearance, increased blood flow and oxygenation. We used dynamic contrast‐enhanced (DCE)‐MRI and fat fraction (FF) imaging for investigating vascular perfusion kinetics in brown and beige adipose tissues with cold exposure or treatment with β3‐adrenergic agonist. Methods: FF imaging and DCE‐MRI using gadolinium‐diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid were performed in interscapular BAT (iBAT) and beige tissues using male Wister rats (n = 38). Imaging was performed at thermoneutral condition and with either cold exposure, treatment with pharmacological agent CL‐316,243, or saline. DCE‐MRI and FF data were co‐registered to enhance the understanding of metabolic activity. Results: Uptake of contrast agent in activated iBAT and beige tissues were significantly (P <.05) higher than nonactivated iBAT. The Ktrans and kep increased significantly in iBAT and beige tissues after treatment with either cold exposure or β3‐adrenergic agonist. The FF decreased in activated iBAT and beige tissues. The Ktrans and FF from iBAT and beige tissues were inversely correlated (r = 0.97; r = 0.94). Significant increase in vascular endothelial growth factor expression and Ktrans in activated iBAT and beige tissues were in agreement with the increased vasculature and vascular perfusion kinetics. The iBAT and beige tissues were validated by measuring molecular markers. Conclusion: Increased Ktrans and decreased FF in iBAT and beige tissues were in agreement with the vascular perfusion kinetics facilitating the clearance of free fatty acids. Arsenic that adversely affects human health is frequently reported in certain regions in India and other parts of the world. A low cost, portable, and eco-friendly field test system is required to monitor the levels of arsenic in drinking water procured from different tube wells and open wells. This paper presents the construction of biosensor strain by transforming E. coliDH $5\alpha $ with the plasmid pJSKV51 carrying in-frame promoter operator region as well as entire arsR gene, part of arsD gene and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) gene. This strain was able to induce EGFP in presence of arsenic III ion. This paper further presents a novel EGFP-based bio-electronic sensing methodology to develop a low-cost battery operated system to measure the fluorescence emitted by biosensor strain and display the numerical values of the concentrations of arsenic in water samples. In this method, a blue light of 480 nm excites the EGFP to produce a green fluorescence signal in proportion to arsenic concentration. The developed device includes a compact embedded system to measure the signal fluorescence using light sensor, programmable controllers and liquid crystal display to show the corresponding concentration of the arsenic in ppb. The present study was aimed to identify the role ofProsopis julifloraalkaloids in animal toxicity. Total alkaloids were extracted from the leaves of this plant and were separated into various fractions. Chemical characterization of the alkaloids and its separated fractions were done by DART-MS technique, which revealed the presence of piperidine group of alkaloids. They were subjected for acute toxicity analysis for the calculation of median lethal dose (LD50). LD50value obtained was in the range of 27-100 mg/kg body weight and was lowest for the total alkaloid mixture, indicating a synergistic behavior. Subacute toxicity study of the total alkaloid extract was conducted for a period of 14 days at sub-lethal dose levels of 1, 2, 5 and 10 mg/ kg body weight. Physical parameters, biochemical parameters related to organ toxicity and hematological parameters were studied as end point of evaluation. Histopathological studies were also conducted to assess any organ specific toxicity. Results obtained showed toxic symptoms in multiple organs at high doses of 5 and 10 mg/kg body weight. Biofuel production by microalgae has the advantage of higher biomass productivity over land crops. The selection of potential microalgae depends on the growth in outdoor mass cultivation during different seasons, which can be predicted by a mathematical model. Here, freshwater green algae were isolated from a local water body in Pilani, Rajasthan, India (geographical coordinates: 28°22′N 75°36′E) and characterized by microscopy and ribosomal RNA analysis. The strain was submitted to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute's microbial culture collection (IARI, India) and identified as Desmodesmus sp. MCC34. This strain, along with a fresh water green algae ( Chlorella minutissima), two marine green algae species ( Dunaliella salina and Dunaliella tertiolecta) and two nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria ( Nostoc muscorum and Anabaena doliolum), were screened for lipid productivity and growth kinetics under culture room and raceway pond conditions. Desmodesmus sp. MCC34 showed the highest specific growth rate (0.26 day−1), biomass production (1.9 g L−1) and lipid productivity (103 mg L−1 day−1). The optimal temperature and saturating light intensity for maximal growth of Desmodesmus sp. MCC34 were 35 °C and 75 μmol m−2 s−1 with molar extinction coefficient of 0.22 m2 g−1, respectively. Desmodesmus sp. MCC34 was then subjected to outdoor cultivation in a 20-m long raceway pond for 18 days during March and November 2013. The areal biomass productivity and volumetric biomass productivity were 13946.23 kg ha−1 year−1 and 56.94 mg L − 1day−1 during the month of March, decreasing to 6262.28 kg ha−1 year−1 and 25.57 mg L − 1day−1 during the month of November. A mathematical model was constructed to explain the relationship between biomass production and growth parameters such as temperature, light intensity and nutrient concentration. Blast-induced traumatic brain injury is on the rise, predominantly as a result of the use of improvised explosive devices, resulting in undesirable neuropsychological dysfunctions, as demonstrated in both animals and humans. This study investigated the effect of open-field blast injury on the rat brain using multi-echo, susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI). Multi-echo SWI provided phase maps with better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), making it a sensitive technique for brain injury. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to a survivable blast of 180 kPa. The visibility of blood vessels of varying sizes improved with multi-echo SWI. Reduced signal intensity from major vessels post-blast indicates increased deoxyhaemoglobin. Relative cerebral blood flow was computed from filtered phase SWI images using inferred changes in oxygen saturation from major blood vessels. Cerebral blood flow decreased significantly at day 3 and day 5 post-blast compared with that pre-blast. This was substantiated by the upregulation of β-amyloid precursor protein (β-APP), a marker of ischaemia, in the neuronal perikaya of the cerebral cortex, as observed by immunofluorescence, and in the cortical tissue by western blot analysis. Our findings indicate the presence of brain ischaemia in post-blast acute phase of injury with possible recovery subsequently. Our results from cerebrovascular imaging, histology and staining provide an insight into the ischaemic state of the brain post-blast and may be useful for prognosis and outcome. This study evaluated the potential of Scenedesmus sp. MCC 26 as a new cost effective and efficient alternative for removing Zn(II) ions from viscose industrial effluent. Scenedesmus sp. MCC 26 (green microalgae) was isolated from a metal contaminated site and investigated for biosorption of Zn(II) from simulated viscose industrial effluent. Different biosorption parameters such as effect of pH (2-7), initial Zn(II) ion concentration (0-600 mg/L) and contact time (0-120 min) were investigated in order to optimize the process. The maximum absorption (142.85 mg/g) by the microalgal biomass was observed at pH 6 within 60 min of contact time at 28°C. Biosorption process was found to be rapid (6 mg of Zn/g biomass per min) for initial 10 min followed by a slower phase (0.6 mg of Zn/g biomass per min). The absorption data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm ( qmax = 142.85 mg/g, r2 = 0.973) and Freundlich isotherm ( kf = 1.447, r2 = 0.992). Treatment of Zn(II) loaded biomass with 0.1 M H2SO4 showed almost 99% recovery of zinc which can be reused in the industrial processes. After first cycle of Zn(II) removal and recovery, the same biomass was tested for its reusability in repeated cycles. The major contributing factors for the causation of treatment failure in cases of pulmonary tuberculosis under Category-II directly observed treatment short-course treatment (DOTS) are treatment after default, poor treatment compliance, and development of multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis. The objective of the present study is to find out the demographic profile and drug susceptibility pattern in Category-II failure patients of pulmonary tuberculosis under Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) of India. Two hundreds and twenty four patients with Category-II treatment failure of pulmonary tuberculosis were enrolled from Department of Pulmonary Medicine, at Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Medical University, UP, Lucknow, India, from August 2003 to July 2008. Their complete bacteriological assessment in terms of sputum smear for acid-fast bacilli, culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and drug sensitivity pattern were done in the Department of Microbiology. Among 224 patients, 16 (7.1%) patients were lost to follow-up and the final analysis was done among 208 (92.8%) cases. The reasons for inclusion of these 224 cases in the Category II regimen were treatment failure in the previous regimen (n = 75, 33%), default in 57% (n = 129 cases), and relapse in 8.9% (n = 20 cases). Among 208 patients, culture was positive in 170 (81.7%) cases, negative in 17 (8.1%) cases and contaminated in 21 (10%) cases. The drug sensitivity pattern of culture positive cases of Category-II failure patients revealed that, 58.2% (n = 99) had MDR tuberculosis and 40.5% (n = 69) were resistant but were non-MDR tuberculosis and 1.1 % (n = 2) cases were sensitive to all first line antituberculosis drugs. Today's society is faced with many upfront challenges such as the energy crisis, water pollution, air pollution, and global warming. The greenhouse gases (GHGs) responsible for global warming include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (NOx), water vapor (H2O), and fluorinated gases. A fraction of the increased emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere is due to agricultural and municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems. There is a need for a sustainable solution which can degrade the pollutants and provide a technology-based solution. Hence, the present work deals with the custom design of a loop photobioreactor with 34 L of total volume used to handle different inlet CO2 concentrations (0.03%, 5%, and 10% (v/v)). The obtained values of biomass productivity and CO2 fixation rate include 0.185 ± 0.004 g L−1 d−1 and 0.333 ± 0.004 g L−1 d−1, respectively, at 10% (v/v) CO2 concentration and 0.084 ± 0.003 g L−1 d−1 and 0.155 ± 0.003 g L−1 d−1, respectively, at 5% (v/v) CO2 concentration. The biochemical compositions, such as carbohydrate, proteins, and lipid content, were estimated in the algal biomass produced from CO2 mitigation studies. The maximum carbohydrate, proteins, and lipid content were obtained as 20.7 ± 2.4%, 32.2 ± 2.5%, and 42 ± 1.0%, respectively, at 10% (v/v) CO2 concentration. Chlorophyll (Chl) a and b were determined in algal biomass as an algal physiological response. The results obtained in the present study are compared with the previous studies reported in the literature, which indicated the feasibility of the scale-up of the process for the source reduction of CO2 generated from waste management systems without significant change in productivity. Tuberculosis of the parotid gland is a rare condition. We describe a case of tuberculosis of right parotid gland in a 17-year-old male patient. Diagnosis was made by early suspicion and confirmed by demonstration of epitheloid granulomas on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Patient was successfully treated with daily regimen of four drugs (rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, ethambutol) for first two months followed by two drugs (rifampicin and isoniazid) for last four months. Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy characterized by the occurrence of plasma cell tumor within the bone marrow. Extramedullary plasmacytomas form a small percentage of plasma cell tumors, and although 80-90% of extramedullary lesions occur in the head and neck, pulmonary plasmacytomas are found to be a very uncommon clinical entity. Hereby, we describe a case of a patient with pulmonary plasmacytoma, who developed nodal and pulmonary MM with a pleural effusion, the radiological appearance of which mimicked bronchogenic carcinoma. Intralobar pulmonary sequestration is characterized by the presence of nonfunctional parenchymal lung tissue, receiving systemic arterial blood supply. Most cases of antituberculous agent-associated psychoses were caused by isoniazid (INH), with ethambutol (EMB)-induced psychosis being rare. The concomitant occurrence of INH- and EMB- induced psychosis and in a single individual is extremely uncommon. We report a case of 28-year-old male who developed psychotic symptoms on start of EMB initially and later on INH also.
