2. Interpretation of electrocardiographic, echocardiographic and biochemical findings during different stages of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis

Objective. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that cardiac alterations participate within different stages of CVL. Materials and methods. Twenty-eight dogs were diagnosed with CVL, were classified [based on clinical signs, rapid ELISA/IFAT, hematological and serum biochemical tests, urinary protein/creatinine ratio, ECG and ECHO]. as follows; group I (mild disease), group II (moderate disease), group III (severe disease), group IV (very severe disease) and group V included healthy controls. Results. Ig G antibodies against leishmaniasis as tested by IFAT, were deemed 1/64 to 1/16000 among infected groups. There were statistical significance regarding mean values for WBC [among healthy control group (V.) and other groups (p=0.049)], RBC [among stage III-stage IV and other groups (p=0.001)], Hb [between stage I and stage III-stage IV (p=0.008), HCT [between stage I and other groups (p = 0.001)] MCHC [between stage I and stage II- stage IV (p=0.046)], serum creatinine [(p=0.008) stage IV and stage I-II within group V], serum protein [(p=0.002) among stage IV and stage I-III- healthy control groups] and serum albumine [(p=0.004) among stage IV and stage I-II]. There was no alteration in CTnI concentrations,among groups. UPC analysis revealed statistical difference among control group and stage II to IV dogs (p=0.000). Moderate or severe ECG abnormalities were detected in 6/28 of diseased dogs. Regarding ECHO examination LA/ Ao value presented significant difference (p=0.003) among stage IV and other groups. Conclusions. It may be suggested that establishing Leishvet Working Group to those of dogs classified into stage I to IV, ECG [left atrial/ventricular enlargement, myocardial hypoxia] and ECHO [left atrial dilation, decrased/increased LVIDs, decrased/increased LVIDd, shortened FS and EF (systolic dysfunction)] alterations must be taken into account along with hematological and serum biochemical analysis.

This study aimed to evaluate non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), magnesium (Mg2+), calcium (Ca2+) and lactate as biological tests for the detection of some metabolic diseases during transition period in selected dairy farms located in Aydın province. Cow-side analysis with body condition score evalutation were performed weekly in at least 12 dairy cattle from each farm from prepartum week 2 to postpartum week 2. According to the prepartum NEFA ≥0.4 mmol/L, postpartum BHBA ≥1.4 mmol/L and Ca2+ ≤ 2.0 mmol/L at parturition (day 0) in herd-based evaluation, it was observed that all farms were positively evaluated for negative energy balance and also at risk for subclinical hypocalcaemia. Regarding the threshold value of Mg2+ <0.61 mmol/L, subclinical hypomagnesaemia was observed at the Ist and IInd farms. It was concluded that prepartum NEFA threshold (0.68 mmol/L), obtained from the receiver operating characteristics statistical analysis could be used for observing some postpartum clinical diseases. It was suggested that it allowed planning and strategic interventions to prevent herd-based diseases in Turkey and will be a precedent for future studies and herd management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes the clinicopathologic findings in naturally occurring West Nile virus (WNV) infection in horses. WNV was diagnosed in a foal by immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization methods, and the presence of WNV antibodies was detected in 5 other horses with clinical signs suggestive of WNV infection. At necropsy of the foal, lymph nodes were edematous and enlarged, and the intestines showed diffuse congestion and focal hemorrhages. The most significant histologic lesions in this case were nonsuppurative meningoencephalomyelitis, particularly in the brainstem and spinal cord. Identification of viral RNA by in situ hybridization and viral antigen by immunohistochemistry was concentrated primarily in nerve fibers, glial cells, and their processes in brainstem and spinal cord and, to a lesser extent, within the cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum. An 11-year-old male Cocker Spaniel was examined for a palpable abdominal mass located in the jejunum after presenting with a history of anorexia and constipation for several weeks. In a contrast radiogram, a structure with well-defined borders adjacent to the intestine was determined. The intestinal mass, measuring 16 x 9.19 x 8.6 cm and weighing 900 g was surgically removed. At gross examination, when the lumen of a portion of the intestine excised together with the tumour mass was exposed, an ulcerated, oval-shaped area 1.2 x 0.6 cm in size was observed on the mucosa. The outer surface of the tumour was homogenous and expanded outwards from the intestinal wall. Histologically, the tumour was composed of fusiform-elongated spindle-shaped to polygonal neoplastic cells forming interlacing fascicles or interwoven bundles in an atypical herringbone pattern. Immnunohistochemically, neoplastic cells stained intensely positive for vimentin, and negative for α-SMA, desmin, cyotokeratin (AE1/AE3), S-100 protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, neuron specific enolase and synap- tophsin. On the basis of the histopathological and immunohistochemical results, the tumour was diagnosed as a fibrosarcoma. The present report is a very rare description of fibrosarcoma of the dog intestine associated with intestinal perforation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a study which examined the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatese (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in valuable dressage and hunter/jumper horses with dermatophytosis. The study included 16 hunter/jumper and dressage horses, two to seven years old, that were examined from 2006 to 2008. No statistically significant differences were found in the enzyme activities of hunter/jumper and dressage horses with and without dermatophytosis.

16. Serological status, epidemiology and prevalence of bovine Neospora caninum infection in Turkey: a review of published studies.

- Abstract
The article focuses on Neospora caninum in dairy and beef cattle in Turkey. Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite of animals that was first recognized in dogs in 1984. The overall Neospora seroprevalence determined from 3,287 sera of cows in different provinces was 13.96%. In the Kars region, 2% of cows were positive for antibodies to Neospora. Findings suggest that a proportion of cattle in different parts of the country were infected with Neospora, which may be linked with pregnancy. Exposure to Neospora is indicated in serum analysis from an aborting cow.

17. Prevalence of haemoplasma infection in pet cats from 4 different provinces in Turkey.

- Abstract
The article discusses a study which investigated the prevalence of haemoplasmosis in sick anaemic and non anaemic cats in Ankara, Turkey. Cytological examination and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay were used in the study. Results showed that haemoplasma in the feline population was 18.9%. The diseased cats were more affected than the healthy cats and 100% of animals with signs of haemoplasmosis were PCR positive. In addition, no geographical influence on haemoplasmosis frequency was observed in non anaemic positive cats. Only Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum was seen by the PCR assay in the regions studied.

Canine parvoviral enteritis remains one of the commonest causes of death in young dogs. This study aimed to determine serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status (TOS) levels in dogs with canine parvoviral enteritis (CPV) and reveal the risk factors of DIC formation. Thirty dogs were included in the study. The dogs were divided into two groups; the first group consisted of 20 dogs diagnosed with CPV (study group) and the other group consisted of 10 healthy dogs aged 0-12 months (control group). The mean TAC value was 0.354±0.018 mmol Trolox equiv./L in the control group and 0.295±0.007 mmol Trolox equiv./L in the study group. The mean TOS level was determined as 6.539±0.154 µmol H2O2/L in the control group and 7.934±0.364 µmol H2O2/L in the study group. The mean nitric oxide (NO) concentration was 18.613±0.856 µmol/L in the control group and 21.781±0.913 µmol/L in the study group. D-dimer levels were found to be 0.170±0.070 mg/dL in the control group and 2.585±0.584 mg/dL in the study group. As a result, it was demonstrated that it is essential to consider that oxidative stress increases and antioxidant capacity decreases in dogs with CPV and that disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) may develop in dogs with CPV. 19. Comparative clinical efficiency of resveratrol, allopurinol, and resveratrol plus allopurinol in canine visceral leishmaniasis.

Objective: To assess the clinical and immunological effectiveness of resveratrol alone or combined with allopurinol for treating canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL)., Methods: This study included 50 dogs, 30 diagnosed with CVL and 20 healthy controls. Dogs were classified based on their treatment regime (receiving resveratrol [200 mg/dog/d] and/or allopurinol [10 mg/kg/d]). Clinical scores, anti-leishmanial antibody titers, and routine blood parameters were evaluated on days 0, 15, and 30 after treatment., Results: Dogs treated with the combination therapy showed the most substantial improvements, with a 75.77% reduction in clinical scores and an 81.25% reduction in antibody titers. Dogs receiving allopurinol exhibited a 56.25% reduction in clinical scores, while those treated with resveratrol showed a 42.82% reduction. Antibody titers were less significantly reduced in the resveratrol group (67.5%) compared to the allopurinol group (45%)., Conclusions: Combining resveratrol with allopurinol enhances the therapeutic efficacy for CVL, leading to significant clinical improvements and reductions in antibody titers. Resveratrol alone also demonstrates promising anti-leishmanial effects., Clinical Relevance: Resveratrol, either alone or in combination with allopurinol, offers a feasible and effective alternative for improving clinical outcomes in CVL. Its incorporation into standard protocols may enhance treatment strategies in veterinary medicine.

20. Identification, Characterization, and Ranking of Candidate Metrics for Selection to Anesthesiology Residency: An Iterative Survey of Program Directors.

Background: The primary aim of this study was to identify and stratify candidate metrics used by anesthesiology residency program directors (PDs) to develop their residency rank lists through the National Resident Matching Program., Methods: Sixteen PDs comprised the participants, selected for diversity in geography and program size. We used a 3-round iterative survey to identify and stratify candidate metrics. In the first round, participants listed metrics they planned to use to evaluate candidates. In the second round, metrics from the first round were ranked by importance, and criteria were solicited to define an exceptional, strong, average, marginal, and uncompetitive candidate for each metric. In the third round, aggregated results were presented and participants refined their rankings., Results: Of the 16 PDs selected, 15 participated in the first and second survey rounds, and 10 in the third. Eighteen candidate metrics were indicated by 8 or more PDs for residency selection. All 10 PDs from the final round identified passing Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) and the absence of "red flags" like a failed rotation as key selection metrics, both averaging an importance score of 4.9 out of 5. Other metrics identified by all PDs included clerkship evaluation comments, USMLE Step 2 scores, class rank, letters of recommendation, personal statement, and program and geographical signals., Conclusions: The study reveals key metrics anesthesiology residency PDs use for candidate ranking, which may offer candidates insights into their competitiveness for anesthesiology residency., (© 2024 Society for Education in Anesthesia.)

21. Unenriched skin microbiota transplantation for cats: new road story for treating feline atopic skin syndrome.

- Abstract
Manipulation of skin biogeography has been the subject of study by the present authors for a very long while. Previous description and report identified the benefical application of skin microbiota transplantation (SMT) by the same researcher group, whom described unenriched skin microbiota transplantation at clinical veterinary practice for the first time among dogs. This study to our knowledge again for the first time reported herein aimed to investigate Un-smt application for treatment of feline atopic skin syndrome (FASS). This novel treatment intervention was performed similarly to previous description and methodology by use of Nivea Refining Clear-Up Strips (Ni-RcUs) either in autologue or heterologue route. Clinical biomarker for detecting the efficacy of Un-smt via Ni-RcUs evolved epidermal corneometric analytes (i.e. epidermal hydration and pH), relevant clinical scores The Feline Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index (FeDESI) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS pruritus) and clinical observations performed weekly, at least. Both FeDESI and VAS pruritus scores were changed in relationship with smt. Pre-treament day 0 FeDESI scores (median ± SE) (72.5 ± 9.34), were significantly (p=0.001) higher than scores on day 10 (13.5 ± 2.55) switching the severity of the disease in all cases. Besides day 0 VAS pruritus scores were 6.0 ± 0.49 (median ± SE) (prior to treatment), whereas owner VAS pruritus score was decreased to 2.0 ± 0.34 (median ± SE) significantly (p=0.001). There were no side effects attributable to treatment applications. All cases were monitored for 6 months after completion of treatment in which no recurrence was observed. As a preliminary conclusion with selected number of cats with FASS, Un-smt with Ni-RcUs should be novel strategy for manuplating skin microbiome with treatment success., Competing Interests: Conflict of interests: We have further interest for development of this technique.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (ME), which are an important zoonotic diseases of dogs, causing multiple organ dysfunction and has a poor prognosis when not interfered. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the cardiovascular injury that develops in dogs that co‑infected with VL and ME with cardiovascular biomarkers and echocardiographic parameters. The animal material of this study was consisted of 14 owned dogs in total; 7 diseased dogs which were determined to be co‑infected with VL and ME according to the results of clinical examination and rapid test kits, and 7 healthy dogs, which were determined to be healthy as a result of the same examinations. As a result of echocardiographic examinations, decreased left ventricular cytolic and diastolic diameters (LVIDs, LVIDd), fractional shortening (FS) and increased ratio of left atrium to left aortic root diameter (LA/Ao) values were determined in the Co‑infected Group compared with the Healthy Group. Also, as a result of biomarker analysis, higher cTnI) D‑dimer and NT‑proBNP levels were detected in the Co‑infected Group. In conclusion, considering studies of dogs infected with VL and/or ME alone, it was concluded that similar cardiovascular injury develops in dogs co‑infected with VL and ME.

23. Arginine, symmetric and asymmetric dimethylarginine levels in canine leishmaniasis.

- Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the levels of arginine, symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in dogs with canine leishmaniasis (CanL) and their relationship with some renal and cardiovascular parameters. A total of 60 dogs were enrolled, including 40 with CanL and 20 healthy controls. The CanL group was divided into four stages based on clinical and laboratory findings. The levels of plasma arginine, SDMA, and ADMA were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The data from the healthy group were compared with those from the CanL group, and according to the stages. In dogs with CanL, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, plasma creatinine, cystatin-C, phosphorus, potassium, and low-density lipoprotein concentrations, the urine protein/creatinine ratio, the amount of nitric oxide, and creatine kinase-MB activity were higher, while the high-density lipoprotein concentration was lower compared to healthy controls. The concentration of arginine was low (p < 0.05) and the levels of ADMA (p < 0.001) and SDMA (p < 0.05) were high in dogs with CanL. There were no statistically significant differences in arginine concentration among the different stages of CanL. However, the concentration of plasma ADMA was higher in all stages of CanL compared to the healthy group, and the concentration of plasma SDMA was higher in Stage IV compared to the healthy group and Stage III. The present study demonstrates for the first time a decrease in arginine concentration and an increase in ADMA concentration in dogs with CanL. The increase in SDMA concentration in dogs with CanL was consistent with previous studies. However, compared to other renal parameters, SDMA exhibited limited performance distinguishing between clinical stages of CanL. These findings could be a source for future diagnostic and therapeutic studies to explain the renal and cardiovascular pathophysiology of CanL. Purpose: Canine ehrlichiosis is an important tick-borne disease of dogs worldwide. In the present study, we aimed to determine the serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase, (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity and serum protein profiles in dogs affected with naturally acquired ehrlichiosis., Methods: The animal materials had been consisted of ten dogs naturally infected with Ehrlichia canis, and ten controls negative for Ehrlichia canis. TAC, MDA, NO, SOD, GSH-Px, ADA activity and TP, ALB, GLOB levels were measured in sera of the animals. The serum protein concentrations were measured by autoanalyzer. The electrophoretic profiles of serum total protein were determined by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (Native-PAGE)., Results: In dogs with ehrlichiosis, decreased TAC (P < 0.05) and GSH-Px (P > 0.05) levels were determined. However, NO (P > 0.05), SOD (P < 0.05), ADA (P > 0.05), MDA (P > 0.05), TP (P < 0.05) and GLO (P < 0.05) levels were found as increased in the Ehrlichia positive dogs. ALB levels were decreased without a statistical significance (P > 0.05). ALB, α1 and β2 globulin strip densities were found as decreased in native-PAGE, while β1 and γ globulin strip densities were significantly increased in the E. canis positive group when compared to the control., Conclusion: It was determined that the oxidative stress decreased high antioxidant activity in dogs naturally infected with E. canis, and consequently, pro-oxidant and antioxidant defense and serum protein profiles were affected. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an acquired autoimmune condition characterized by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibody, and anti-β
2 glycoprotein-I antibody) which leads to clinical thrombosis via a multifactorial mechanism of action. Despite the propensity to form clot in vivo, these antibodies interfere with the assembly of the prothrombinase complex on phospholipids in in vitro assays, leading to prolongation of activated clotting time and activated partial thromboplastin time. This disconnect between what occurs in vivo and in vitro makes monitoring anticoagulation during cardiac surgery particularly complex. We present a patient with APS undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting with cardiopulmonary bypass. We delineate our strategy for managing anticoagulation in the presence of this syndrome using the Hepcon Hemostasis Management System Plus (Medtronic, Inc. Background: Plasma citrulline (CIT) concentration is considered to be a reliable marker of functional enterocyte mass, primarily in humans. However, information about CIT levels along with related metabolites, arginine (ARG), nitric oxide (NO), and ammonia in neonatal calves are lacking., Objectives: To compare plasma CIT, ARG, NO, and whole blood ammonia concentrations in neonatal calves with acute diarrhea with those in healthy calves and to assess their possible relationships with diarrhea-related criteria., Animals: Seventy neonatal calves (60 with acute diarrhea and 10 healthy)., Methods: Observational case-control study. Diarrheic calves were classified into subgroups on the basis of etiology, severity of diarrhea, degree of dehydration, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) status. Plasma CIT and ARG concentrations were measured by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry., Results: Plasma CIT (median [range]: 67.5 [61.9-75.4] vs 30.1 [15.0-56.1] μmol/L) and ARG (170.7 [148.5-219.5] vs 106.1 [54.4-190.7] μmol/L) were lower and plasma NO (4.42 [3.29-5.58] vs 6.78 [5.29-8.92] μM) and blood ammonia concentrations (28.7 [26.1-36.9] vs 59.8 [34.6-99.5] μmol/L) were higher in the neonatal calves with diarrhea (P < .001). Plasma CIT (β = -0.29, P = .02), ARG (β = -0.33, P = .01), NO (β = 0.55, P < .001), and blood ammonia (β = 0.63, P <.001) were affected by SIRS status. Except for ammonia (0.52), the effects sizes for severity of diarrhea and degree of dehydration were small (ηp2 ≤ 0.45) for CIT, ARG, and NO., Conclusions and Clinical Importance: The changes in these variables might have diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic value in diarrheic neonatal calves., (© 2019 The Authors. Background: Results of a previous study revealed an over-ordering of blood products for cardiac surgery and led to the creation of a new blood ordering algorithm. This follow-up study has been conducted to evaluate improvement in ordering practices., Methods: Retrospective data were collected for 171 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting or valve surgery from March 2015 to March 2016 to determine the crossmatch-to-transfusion ratio (C:tx) and potential cost savings. Results were compared with pre-algorithm values and considered statistically significant if the 95% confidence interval did not include zero., Results: Prior to the algorithm, 100% of patients undergoing cardiac surgery were crossmatched. After instituting the algorithm, this decreased to 15%. The overall C:tx decreased from 7.97 to 2.14. Cost savings were calculated as $114.79 (coronary artery bypass grafting) and $129.05 (valve surgery) per patient., Conclusions: The creation of a new algorithm to guide ordering practices has significantly improved the C:tx, reduced unnecessary crossmatching, and lowered costs.

Introduction: This retrospective study examined the role of aortic valve (AV) disease in patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) to determine the incidence of postoperative cardiac morbidity and mortality when compared with a matched control group without AV disease., Methods: Patients were included in the AV group if diagnosed with aortic stenosis (AS) or aortic regurgitation or had received AV replacement prior to OLT. The AV group (n = 53) was matched to a control group (n = 212) with the following preoperative variables: type of organ transplanted, age, gender, race, body mass index, MELD, redo-transplantation, preoperative renal replacement therapy, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, viral hepatitis, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. A 1:4 ratio was utilized to improve the efficiency and power of the analysis., Results: No significant difference in survival or posttransplant cardiac complications (acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, or dysrhythmia) was observed between groups. However, statistically significantly more patients-11% (6/53)-required coronary intervention following OLT in the AV group, whereas 3% (7/212) required coronary intervention (χ
2 = 5.8; P = .0156) in the control group. Following OLT, 9% (5/53) in the AV group required surgical or nonsurgical AV intervention, whereas no valvular events were observed in the control group. Event-free survival in the AV group, with an end point defined as AV intervention (n = 5) and death (n = 10), was 92% (49/53) at 1 year, 83% (44/53) at 3 years, and 72% (38/53) at 5 years., Conclusions: Patients with pretransplant AV replacement or AS have significant cardiac complications (myocardial infarction, AV replacement, or cardiac death) in 1 to 3 years post-OLT.- Published

Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the oxidative status and lipid profile among dogs at different stages of visceral leishmaniasis (VL)., Methods: Dogs with VL were divided into four groups according to the classification reported by the Leishvet group: stage I (n=9), stage II (n=11), stage III (n=6), and stage IV (n=6); these dogs were compared to healthy control dogs (n=14). The lipid profile [high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, and triglyceride levels) and oxidative status [total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity] were evaluated., Results: Compared to the control dogs, significant increases in the TOS and the LDL level and decreases in PON-1 activity and the HDL level were determined among the dogs at all stages of VL (p<0.05). No significant differences were found in the TAC and the cholesterol and triglyceride levels among the groups., Conclusion: Increased oxidative stress and alterations in lipid profile were observed among dogs with VL. However, no significant differences were detected between dogs at different stages of the disease. Therefore, changes in the TOS, PON-1 activity, and HDL and LDL levels in dogs at all stages of VL should be considered in the diagnosis of the disease and planning of the treatment.

This study aimed to evaluate the acute phase response (APR) through haptoglobin (Hp) and serum amyloid A (SAA) concentrations in serum and to examine the correlation between these acute phase proteins (APPs) and oocyst shedding using experimental Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) infection model in neonatal lambs. Twenty lambs were divided into two equal groups: group CON remained uninfected as negative control and lambs of the group EXP were inoculated orally with 1×10
6 C. parvum oocysts. Blood and faecal samples were obtained from both groups before colostrum intake and prior to inoculation (day-1), and at 2, 6, 13, and 20days post-inoculation (dpi). The serum concentrations of SAA increased following the experimental infection of lambs with C. parvum, the difference being statistically significant from pre-inoculation levels at 2 dpi, while significant increases in serum concentration of Hp were observed at 2 and 6 dpi. At the same occasions, serum concentrations of both APPs were significantly higher in the C. parvum-infected lambs compared to the healthy control lambs. A moderate positive correlation (rho=0.67; p< 0.001) was observed between serum Hp concentration and oocyst count (OPG),whereas the serum SAA concentration didn't significantly correlate with OPG (rho=0.18; p>0.05). - Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and molecular characterization of Giardia duodenalis among dogs in Aydin, Turkey. A total of 473 faecal samples from dogs were collected. The overall prevalence of G. duodenalis was 18.8%. Higher infection rates were observed in dogs younger than three months old, from shelters, and with diarrhoea. Faecal samples of 89 dogs, diagnosed Giardia-positive by microscopy, were found positive by nested PCR. The β-giardin nested PCR assay revealed assemblage B in all samples (100%), whereas 38 of the samples were mixed with assemblage A (42%). Sequence analysis of isolates indicated sub-genotypes A3 and B4 which have been previously detected in human isolates from Turkey. The results of the present study indicated the relatively high prevalence of giardiasis and the presence of the zoonotic sub-genotypes suggesting the important role of dogs as potential reservoirs of human infections.

Background: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ketoprofen on acute phase protein (APPs) concentrations in goats undergoing castration. A total of 16 clinically healthy, male and 12 months old goats were enrolled and each case received ketoprofen (group I) or control (group II) in a randomized fashion. Goats were sedated with Xylazine-HCl, afterwards ketoprofen (3 mg/kg) was injected via jugular vein in group I, whereas physiological saline solution was administered to group II. Goats were castrated by the Burdizzo method. Hematological parameters were determined with a blood cell counter and plasma fibrinogen (Fb), serum haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid A (SAA) and ceruloplasmin (Cp) concentrations were measured Millars technique, ELISA kit or p-phenylenediamine oxidase activity prior to castration and throughout the study on 0 to 96 h., Results: There were no differences in pre-treatment serum Cp, SAA and Fb concentrations among the groups. Contrarily, there were significant differences in plasma Hp concentrations on 0 to 96 h onwards post-castration. There were no differences in WBC and PCV between groups. Cp, Fb, and SAA were almost constant or showed slight changes at various stages of the study with no significant differences between groups., Conclusions: The results revealed that, levels of Cp, Fb and SAA may not be affected by castration such as the confounding parameters similarly to stress. More investigations possessing different surgical or non-surgical castration techniques with larger number of goats and focusing on specific markers for stress are suggested for precise analysis.

Surgical intervention was deemed necessary and was performed in the prone position to facilitate exposure. A multidisciplinary approach was vital to the management plan., Conclusion: For any pregnant patient undergoing nonobstetric surgery, the care provided should be individualized and thoughtful, keeping in mind both the mother and fetus.

Oxidative stress was defined as corruption of balance between oxidant-antioxidant states in favor of oxidants. In this study, it was aimed to determine oxidative stress in naturally infected dogs with Babesia vogeli. The 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), nitric oxide (NO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels in the sera were analyzed by ELISA. 8-OHdG levels increased in B. vogeli infected dogs compared to control group (P<0.05). - Abstract
A patient undergoing radical extrapleural pneumonectomy for epithelioid malignant mesothelioma developed acute paraplegia postoperatively related to long-segment spinal cord ischemia. The usual area of concern for this complication is the T9 to T12 area where the artery of Adamkiewicz is most likely to originate. In this patient, there was ligation of only upper thoracic, ipsilateral segmental arteries from the T3 to T6 level, yet he still developed paraplegia. Our hypothesis is variant mid-thoracic vascular anatomy. Previously unreported, to our knowledge, this should be understood as a rare complication of this surgery.

Background: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation induces hyperalgesia in healthy rats. Here, we evaluated the effects of flurbiprofen, an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective agent, on the increased thermal responses observed in REM sleep deprived rats., Methods: Forty female rats were divided into four groups following 96-hour REM sleep deprivation: intraperitoneal injections of placebo, and flurbiprofen 5 mg/kg, 15 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg were made in CONT (n=10), FBP5, FBP15 and FBP40 groups respectively. Pain threshold measurements were performed three times at baseline (0.hour), at the end of REM sleep deprivation (96.hour) and at 1 h after injections (97.hour) by hot plate and tail-flick tests., Results: REM sleep deprivation induced a significant decrease in pain thresholds of all rats (hotplate: 0.hour vs 96.hour, 9.75±2.85 vs 5.10±2.02, p<0.001; tail flick: 0.hour vs 96.hour, 11.92±4.62 vs 7.92±5.15, p<0.001). Flurbiprofen in 15 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg doses significantly improved pain tolerance measured by tail flick test (tail flick in FBP15 and FBP40 groups: 96.hour vs 97.hour, 7.01±4.97 vs 8.34±3.61 and 5.06±1.57 vs 7.04±2.49, p<0.05 for both)., Conclusion: 96 h of REM sleep deprivation resulted in reduced pain thresholds in both hot plate and tail flick tests. Flurbiprofen was used for the first time in a rat model of REM sleep deprivation, and it provided anti-nociceptive effects in 15 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg doses. - Abstract
A male Rottweiler dog was brought to the Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Veterinary Clinics with the complaint of injury. On examination, on the right rear side of the dog, Myiasis larvae were found. Twenty-seven were collected and larval mouth parts and posterior stigmas were dissected. Upon microscopic examination, the larvae of the dog were identified as third stage Lucilia spp. In the region where larvea were located, erythema, edema, and petechial hemorrhages were observed as pathological disorders.

Background: The development of specialised airway tools help laryngoscopists secure the airway in intensive care units. The use of videolaryngoscopy has been suggested in simulation studies, and human studies suggest that this advanced airway tool may have an advantage for difficult airways; however, less is known about its use in the ICU., Objective: To compare orotracheal intubation before and after acquisition of an ICU-dedicated GlideScope (GS), and to determine the incidence of complications with orotracheal intubation in an ICU., Methods: An observational study was conducted from October 2008 to April 2009 to record the use of advanced airway tools including videolaryngoscopy before ("pre-GS") and immediately after ("post-GS") the purchase of an ICUdedicated videolaryngoscope. Reasons for intubation, response time, type of intubation, number of attempts at intubation, reasons for delays in intubation, risk factors for difficult intubation and complications were compared between these groups., Results: 56 patients were intubated pre-GS and 47 post- GS. Although a significant increase in videolaryngoscopy was observed in the ICU (P = 0.001), no significant reduction in total attempts at orotracheal intubation were observed (P = 0.66), and that the incidence of overall complications were not reduced (P = 0.21)., Conclusions: The use of a new airway tool may not necessarily lead to immediate reduction in attempts at orotracheal intubation or in overall complication rates.

- Abstract
Twenty-seven dogs with angioedema, were enrolled in this clinical study. The cases were randomly assigned to the treatment group (n=15) and untreated placebo control group (n=12). It was concluded that mepyramine maleate has the potential to be helpful for dogs with angioedema.

41. Azithromycin therapy of papillomatosis in dogs: a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

- Abstract
Azithromycin, an azalide subclass macrolide antibiotic, is an effective, well-tolerated and safe therapeutic option for treatment of papillomatosis in humans. This study reports the clinical and histopathological results from a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of 17 dogs of various breeds with diagnosis of oral (n = 12) and cutaneous papillomatosis (n = 5) treated with azithromycin. Papillomas appeared as whitish, verrucous, hyperkeratotic papules 1-2.7 mm in size. The cases were randomly assigned to azithromycin (n = 10) and placebo treatment groups (n = 7). Both owners and investigators were blinded to the allocation to the groups. Azithromycin (10 mg/kg) was administered per os every 24 h for 10 days. Clinical evaluations were done by the same investigator throughout the trial. Azithromycin treatment significantly decreased clinical scores (P < 0.001), whereas there was no change seen in the placebo group. In the azithromycin treatment group, skin lesions disappeared in 10-15 days. One case in the placebo had spontaneous regression of its papillomas by day 41, but lesions were still evident at day 50 in the remaining six cases. There was no recurrence of papillomatosis in the azithromycin treated dogs (follow up 8 months). No adverse effects were seen in either group. In conclusion, azithromycin appears to be a safe and effective treatment for canine papillomatosis.

42. Use of selamectin for the treatment of psoroptic and sarcoptic mite infestation in rabbits.

- Abstract
Selamectin, a novel avermectin compound, was evaluated for its efficacy against naturally occurring infestations of Psoroptes cuniculi and Sarcoptes scabiei. A total of 42 New Zealand rabbits with psoroptic mange and 37 Angora rabbits with sarcoptic mange were used in the present study. On day 0, infested rabbits were treated topically with either selamectin at minimum dose of 6 mg kg(-1) (6-18 mg kg(-1) for New Zealand rabbits, n = 31 and 10-12 mg kg(-1) for Angora rabbits, n = 23) or vehicle only (control groups, n = 11 for New Zealand rabbits, n = 14 for Angora rabbits). The efficacy of selamectin was assessed both clinically and parasitologically by the presence or absence of viable mites. Rabbits were scraped for sarcoptic mites on days 7, 14, 28, 42 and 56 and had otoscopeic and/or microscopic examination for the detection of Psoroptes mites on days 7, 14, 42 and 56. Fisher's exact test was used to assess differences between the vehicle and selamectin treatment in the number of rabbits without mites (cure rates) on each assessment date. It was found that significantly fewer selamectin-treated rabbits had mites detected on skin scrapings (for S. scabiei) or otoscopeic and/or microscopic examination (for P. cuniculi) (P < 0.01) than the vehicle group. Results of the present study suggest that selamectin is effective against naturally infestations of P. cuniculi and S. scabiei in rabbits.
