Temporal and spatial tuning of the refractive index of optical thin films is desired for flat optics applications. The redistribution of mobile ions in mixed ionic-electronic conductors (MIEC) has been demonstrated to serve as a viable means for achieving optical tuning down to the nanoscale. Here we studied the dynamic range of the optical tuning achievable in the refractive index, in the MIEC oxide – PrxCe1−x O2−δ (PCO), for x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4, at 500 °C, by in-situ spectrophotometry. Significant increases in the modulation of both the imaginary and real optical constants in the visible and the adjacent spectra were obtained for increased doping levels. Device employing an electrochemical titration method was implemented to modulate the oxygen concentration, and thereby the optical transmission of PCO. Incorporation of a patterned top electrode allowed for the demonstration of spatial control of PCO thin film properties by in-situ video imaging of the optical switching process. The electrochemically induced optical state is shown to remain non-volatile upon quenching the device to room temperature under applied bias.

The interaction between ambient oxygen and the metal oxide surface is central to various electrochemical devices. Solid oxide fuel cell cathodes and semiconducting metal oxide gas sensors are two prominent examples. Parallels between these two systems are highlighted in this perspective. In both cases, the presence of foreign surface species has been found to significantly alter the interactions of the metal oxides' surfaces with oxygen. On the one hand, interactions are hindered due to the presence of certain impurities, such as the degradation of fuel cell cathode by Si‐species that originate from processing or from operating environments. On the other hand, electrochemically active noble metal additives have been intentionally used to tune the sensor response of metal oxides. In the case of electrochemically active additives, the need for operando spectroscopies to elucidate the mechanism is discussed. Electronic coupling of the surface additive with the metal oxide is found to play a central role in both cases. We use these results to demonstrate that insights gained from either field can be effectively applied to the other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A major challenge to overcome in demonstrating solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to be suitable as efficient and environmentally friendly energy conversion devices capable of addressing pressing clean energy and environmental needs is to surmount chemical and thermo‐mechanical instabilities in their operational phase. To date, perovskite‐based mixed conducting cathodes, which include inherent Co and Sr elements for enhanced reactivity and conductivity, have been intensively studied. These Co/Sr‐based oxides, however, exhibit severe thermochemical expansion and suffer from Sr surface segregation, ultimately degrading the electrode performance. Here, high‐performance and durable SOFCs are demonstrated by employing a Co/Sr‐free fluorite‐based mixed conducting (Pr,Ce)O2‐δ (PCO) cathode eminently compatible with fluorite‐based solid electrolytes. The nanocolumnar PCO electrode developed in this study provides not only a remarkable low level of electrode resistance (e.g., ≈0.05 Ω cm2 at 600 °C) but also exceptional long‐term stability (e.g., a degradation rate 15 times slower compared to the state‐of‐the‐art La0.6Sr0.4CoO3‐δ perovskite). The competitive peak power densities of an anode‐supported single cell with the PCO cathode are also successively achieved, recording a value of 0.92 W cm−2 at 600 °C. Electrochemical systems based on oxide ion conduction such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) provide efficient means of converting energy between chemical and electrical forms, integral to a hydrogen-based energy society. Fundamental understanding of oxygen diffusivity in solids – which can depend on defect type, concentration, as well as migration barrier – is critical in developing their key components: electrolytes and mixed ionic-electronic conducting electrodes. It has been speculated that crystal structure affects the key three factors impacting oxygen diffusion, but no such experiments have been done, without changing cation chemistries, to the best of the authors' knowledge. In this work, oxygen diffusivities in two different but related structures of lanthanum cuprate (La2CuO4+δ) thin films were measured through oxygen isotope exchange experiments and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) at multiple temperatures. We find that while oxygen diffusion is faster in a T-structured layered cuprate, it nevertheless exhibits a higher activation energy as compared to a T′-structured layered cuprate of the same cation chemistry. This seemingly contradictory phenomenon is explained by a lower oxygen defect formation energy (thus higher oxygen defect concentration) but higher defect migration barrier in the T-structure as calculated by density functional theory, offering insight towards structural design of SOFC and SOEC electrolyte and electrode materials for different target temperatures.
