Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide, and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play a major role in the tumor microenvironment (TME), which facilitates the progression of CRC. It is critical to understand how CAFs promote the progression of CRC for the development of novel therapeutic approaches. The purpose of this study was to understand how CAF-derived stromal-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and its interactions with the corresponding C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) promote CRC progression. Our study focused on their roles in promoting tumor cell migration and invasion and their effects on the characteristics of cancer stem cells (CSCs), which ultimately impact patient outcomes. Here, using in vivo approaches and clinical histological samples, we analyzed the influence of secreted SDF-1 on CRC progression, especially in terms of tumor cell behavior and stemness. We demonstrated that CAF-secreted SDF-1 significantly enhanced CRC cell migration and invasion through paracrine signaling. In addition, the overexpression of SDF-1 in CRC cell lines HT29 and HCT-116 triggered these cells to generate autocrine SDF-1 signaling, which further enhanced their CSC characteristics, including those of migration, invasion, and spheroid formation. An immunohistochemical study showed a close relationship between SDF-1 and CXCR4 expression in CRC tissue, and this significantly affected patient outcomes. The administration of AMD3100, an inhibitor of CXCR4, reversed the entire phenomenon. Our results strongly suggest that targeting this signaling axis in CRC is a feasible approach to attenuating tumor progression, and it may, therefore, serve as an alternative treatment method to improve the prognosis of patients with CRC, especially those with advanced, recurrent, or metastatic CRC following standard therapy.

Pulmonary adenocarcinoma (PADC) treatment limited efficacy in preventing tumor progression, often resulting in malignant pleural effusion (MPE). MPE is filled with various mediators, especially interleukin-8 (IL-8). However, the role of IL-8 and its signaling mechanism within the fluid microenvironment (FME) implicated in tumor progression warrants further investigation. Primary cultured cells from samples of patients with MPE from PADC, along with a commonly utilized lung cancer cell line, were employed to examine the role of IL-8 and its receptor, CXCR1, through comparative analysis. Our study primarily assessed migration and invasion capabilities, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and cancer stem cell (CSC) properties. Additionally, IL-8 levels in MPE fluid versus serum, along with immunohistochemical expression of IL-8/CXCR1 signaling in tumor tissue and cell blocks were analyzed. IL-8/CXCR1 overexpression enhanced EMT and CSC properties. Furthermore, the immunocytochemical examination of 17 cell blocks from patients with PADC and MPE corroborated the significant correlation between upregulated IL-8 and CXCR1 expression and the co-expression of IL-8 and CXCR1 in MPE with distant metastasis. In summary, the IL-8/ CXCR1 axis in FME is pivotal to tumor promotion via paracrine and autocrine signaling. Our study provides a therapeutic avenue for improving the prognosis of PADC patients with MPE.

Abstract Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures—in which layered materials are purposely selected to assemble with each other—allow unusual properties and different phenomena to be combined and multifunctional electronics to be created, opening a new chapter for the spread of internet‐of‐things applications. Here, an O2‐ultrasensitive MoTe2 material and an O2‐insensitive SnS2 material are integrated to form a vdW heterostructure, allowing the realization of charge‐polarity control for multioperation‐mode transistors through a simple and effective rapid thermal annealing strategy under dry‐air and vacuum conditions. The charge‐polarity control (i.e., doping and de‐doping processes), which arises owing to the interaction between O2 adsorption/desorption and tellurium defects at the MoTe2 surface, means that the MoTe2/SnS2 heterostructure transistors can reversibly change between unipolar, ambipolar, and anti‐ambipolar transfer characteristics. Based on the dynamic control of the charge‐polarity properties, an inverter, output polarity controllable amplifier, p‐n diode, and ternary‐state logics (NMIN and NMAX gates) are demonstrated, which inspire the development of reversibly multifunctional devices and indicates the potential of 2D materials.

Developing efficient memory and artificial synaptic systems based on environmentally sensitive van der Waals materials remains a challenge. Here, the authors present a native oxidation-inspired InSe field-effect transistor that benefits from a boosted charge trapping behavior under ambient conditions.

Based on the vibration control method and energy harvesting principle in the bridge field, this paper proposes a distributed vibration reduction and energy harvesting method for bridges. Firstly, the analytical solutions of the induced electromotive force, output power and magnetic damping generated by a coil in a magnetic field were deduced through an electromagnetic theory analysis. In addition, the structural vibration equation under the magnetic damping was deduced. Then, a new method of joint simulation and modeling analysis of vibration and energy output was proposed. Finally, the structural vibration reduction and energy output power were analyzed and calculated. The main research results are as follows: by calculating the instantaneous power of the energy collection of the designed circuit, the average instantaneous power collected by the design method is 1.093 × 10−9 W; the initial vibration signal of the target node is obtained through analysis, and the vibration signal of the node before and after applying the electromagnetic damping force is transformed. For the energy analysis, the energy of the acceleration curve before and after the node was calculated to be 3.1048 × 108 and 3.1044 × 108, respectively, and the reduction rate of the node vibration energy was 0.01% and 0.02%, respectively. Thus, the feasibility and vibration reduction effect of the designed bridge distributed vibration reduction and energy harvesting method is verified when the electromagnetic damping force is small. This method can provide new ideas for bridge structure vibration reduction and energy harvesting research and is of great significance to the infrastructure construction and utilization of renewable energy.

Although videos are now used pervasively in English as a Foreign Language settings, most existing literature centers on learners as knowledge receivers or passive video viewers (Lialikhova, 2014; Fisher & Frey, 2015; Bakar et al., 2019). Rarely do studies involving videos engaged learners as knowledge generators or active, self-directed learners. To fill this research gap, the current study examined the effects of the online-video pronunciation dictionary YouGlish, which employs a lexical approach on learners’ speaking skills, including pronunciation, intonation, word usage, and strategies that learners applied while using YouGlish as well as their reactions to it. The results revealed that YouGlish can help learners make progress in their oral skills, especially in terms of word usage, by providing meaningful context that helps them comprehend how oral English is used in real life. The findings revealed the process of using YouGlish generated students to become more active and self-directed learners, rather than remained as passive receivers of knowledge.

Specification tests for thin surface treatment are mainly simulated or empirical; without considering fundamental mechanical or rheological properties of the material. Thus, it is difficult to incorporate the test results into mechanical-based pavement design analysis. A series of test methods, which quantify performance-related mechanical properties of thin surface treatment employed in pavement maintenance and pavement preservation is thus needed. The objective of this study is to investigate the performance-related mechanical properties of thin surface treatment materials for pavement maintenance and preservation. The Micro-Surfacing Mat and Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat were used in this study. The Finite Element Model result indicated that the Modified Leutner Shear Test adequate to evaluate the direct shear strength of the thin surface treatment. The results show that the sensitivity loading frequency and the temperature susceptibility of the Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat were reduced by Rubber Modified Asphalt content. The Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat has greater interfacial shear strength as well as shear stiffness compared to those of Micro-Surfacing Mat. The tack coat application rate is crucial for the interfacial shear strength of Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat. This research found that shear stress and the displacement rate are positively related to the interfacial shear strength and shear stiffness. The interfacial shear strength and shear stiffness are negatively related to testing temperature. The Micro-Surfacing Mat had higher dynamic direct shear modulus, lower loading frequency sensitivity, and better rutting resistance than Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat.

Abstract Background Stroke is a major risk factor for osteoporosis and fractures. No study has evaluated the association between diuretic use and risk of vertebral fracture in stroke patients, although a considerable proportion of stroke patients are prescribed diuretics for hypertension. Our study aimed to investigate whether treatment with thiazides or loop diuretics affects the risk of vertebral fracture after stroke. Methods A population-based propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with a new diagnosis of stroke between 2000 and 2011 were included. After propensity score matching, 9468 patients were included in the analysis of the effect of thiazides, of who 4734 received thiazides within 2 years after stroke. To analyze the loop diuretic effect, 4728 patients were included, of who 2364 received loop diuretics. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) of vertebral fractures among patients according to thiazide or loop diuretic use within 2 years following stroke. Sensitivity analyses based on the duration of thiazide or loop diuretic use were further conducted. Results There was no significant difference in vertebral fracture risk between thiazide users and non-users (adjusted HR [aHR] = 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.88–1.47, p = 0.316). Loop diuretic users had a significantly higher vertebral fracture risk than non-users (aHR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.06–1.98, p = 0.019). Purpose: To validate a conceptual short-form health literacy 12 items questionnaire (HL-SF12) in patient populations. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted via a convenient sample of 403 patients from three departments of a community general hospital in the northern Taiwan. Patients’ health literacy was assessed with a validated HL-SF12, derived from the full scale, the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q), as well as a single-item from Chew’s Set of Brief Health Literacy Question. A reference population in Northern Taiwan (n=928) via the HLS-EU-Q in 2013–2014 was used as a reference to compare the health literacy between that of the general public and the patients. Data was analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), internal consistency analysis, correlation analysis, and linear regression models. Results: Patients’ health literacy assessed with the HL-SF12 was shown with high internal consistency (Cronbach α=.87), and moderately correlated with the single-item from Chew's Set of Brief Health Literacy Question, with satisfactory item-scale convergent validity (item-scale correlation ≥ .40), without floor/ceiling effect, and with satisfactory goodness of fit indices of the three-factor construct model for most of the patients. Their health literacy was significantly positively associated with female gender, higher income, and more often watching health-related TV programs. On the other hands, patients were reported with significantly higher healthcare health literacy than the general public, but not in general health literacy, disease prevention health literacy, or health promotion health literacy. Conclusion: The comprehensive HL-SF12 was a valid and easy to use tool for assessing patients’ health literacy in the hospitals to facilitate healthcare providers in enhancing patients’ health literacy and healthcare qualities.

Long-term nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone (NNK) and arecoline exposure promotes carcinogenesis and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) progression, although most associated data on the two were analyzed individually. The molecular mechanisms underlying tumor progression associated with the synergistic effects of NNK and arecoline remain unclear. We treated SCC-25 and FaDu cells with NNK and arecoline (separately or in combination) for 3 months. Comparative analysis was performed to investigate the mechanism underlying the acquisition of properties related to tumor promotion, including stemness, anti-apoptosis, and resistance to HNSCC therapeutics. Long-term exposure to NNK and arecoline resulted in an increase in cancer stem cell properties, anti-apoptosis, and the resistance to cisplatin in HNSCC. We detected abundant epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression in HNSCC cells after combined treatment with NNK and arecoline. EGFR was pivotal in inducing tumor promotion and anti-apoptosis in cancer cells by inducing pAKT and NFκB. Combined treatment with NNK and arecoline synergistically facilitated tumor aggressiveness via EGFR-AKT signaling. Targeting EGFR-AKT signaling may be a feasible strategy for treating HNSCC.

Guided by the framework of internationalization at home (IaH), this study employed a mixed-methods approach investigating the development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) among a group of tertiary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Taiwan, facilitated through the means of telecollaboration. The telecollaboration incorporated 30 EFL learners and 30 learners of Chinese from Australia and New Zealand. Data collection encompassed EFL learners' responses to a self-assessment questionnaire, their reflective essays, alongside instructors' reflective journals. The findings showed that EFL learners held positive perceptions regarding their telecollaboration experience and reported substantial growth in ICC across three dimensions: cognitive, affective and behavioral. In applying various multimodal communication strategies, EFL learners realized and valued cultural similarities and differences. Their reflective accounts exhibited evidence of enhanced linguistic and cultural competences. The telecollaboration enabled them to increase their confidence in utilizing English, hone their digital literacy skills for effective communications, and establish conducive environments for their relational and emotional development with their teammates and instructors. The latter provided indispensable emotion in varying contingent situations. Incorporating the insights drawn from the instructors' reflective journals, the study argues that telecollaboration as a pedagogical practice is the significant essence of effective IaH curriculum design and implementation.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global pandemic metabolic disorder. In recent years, the amount of medical resources required for the treatment of diabetes has increased as diabetes rates have gradually risen. The combined effects of individual and neighbourhood socio-economic status (SES) on DM survival rates are still not clear, especially in patients of working age. In this paper, we aim to analyze the combined effects of neighbourhood and individual SES on DM survival rates in patients of working age in Taiwan.The study of 23,781 people who were diagnosed with DM by using population-based study between 2002 and 2006. Each sample was followed up for 4 years or as a sensor case. We defined Individual SES and neighbourhood SES by each patient's job category and household income which characterized as advantaged or disadvantaged. Then we compared the survival rates by SES group used Cox proportional hazards model for adjust risk factors.The 4-year overall survival rates of diabetic patients were worst for those with low individual SES who living in advantaged neighbourhoods. After adjustment for patient characteristics, DM patients with high individual SES living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods had the same risk of mortality as those patients with high individual SES living in advantaged neighbourhoods (hazard ratio: 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.81-1.51). The study found that DM patients with low individual SES who live in disadvantaged areas had a greater risk of mortality than those with high SES (odds ratio: 2.57; 95% CI: 2.04-3.24). There were significant differences in survival rates between patients with high individual SES and patients with low individual SES. In contrast, the results did not statistically significant differences in survival rates between advantaged and disadvantaged neighbourhood SES groups.DM patients with low individual SES had the worst survival rate, regardless of whether they were living in a high or low SES neighbourhood area. The competitive cause of death, i.e., the fact that complications, rather than DM itself, are often the cause of death, may be the reason for the inverse relationship found between the effects of individual SES and neighbourhood SES on DM survival. We conclude that the socio-economic gradient in survival among DM patients may be the result of differences in access to medical treatment and attributes related to individual SES.

Circadian rhythms are intrinsic rhythms that are coordinated with the rotation of the Earth and are also generated by a set of circadian-clock genes at the intracellular level. Growing evidence suggests a strong link between circadian rhythms and energy metabolism; however, the fundamental mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, neonatal streptozotocin (STZ)-treated mice were used to model the molecular and physiological progress from insulin resistance to diabetes. Two-day-old male C57BL/6 mice received a single injection of STZ and were tested for non-obese, hyperglycemic and hyperinsulinemic conditions in the early stage, insulin resistance in the middle stage, and diabetes in the late stage. Gene expression levels of the hepatic circadian-clock system were examined by real-time quantitative PCR. Most of the components of the hepatic circadian-clock gene expression system, such as the mRNAs of Bmal1 (brain and muscle Arnt-like protein-1), Per2 (period 2) and Cry1 (cryptochrome 1), were elevated, and circadian patterns were retained in the early and middle stages of insulin-resistant conditions. The insulin sensitizer, rosiglitazone, returns the physiological and molecular changes associated with the diabetic phenotype to normal levels through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) rather than PPARα. Early and chronic treatment with rosiglitazone has been shown to be effective to counter the diabetic condition. Over time, this effect acts to attenuate the increased gene expression levels of the hepatic circadian-clock system and delay the severity of diabetic conditions. Together, these results support an essential role for the hepatic circadian-clock system in the coordinated regulation and/or response of metabolic pathways.

Rutting resistance is an important consideration for paving asphalt mixes. The cause of rutting is a shear strain in the asphalt pavement structure. Here, the rutting behavior of asphalt pavements was evaluated through laboratory simulations using the Hamburg Wheel-Tracking Test (HWTT), UK Wheel-Tracking Test (UKWTT), and Scaled Accelerated Load Simulator (SALS) test. The correlation between the three simulation tests was analyzed to determine the conversion factor (CF). Two parameters of temperature and speed of simulation testing were evaluated in this study. Subsequently, the representative frequency and dynamic modulus were calculated with consideration of viscoelasticity and time-temperature superposition. Using logical analysis, CF between the three simulation tests was validated. The results showed that the full-scale test yielded the highest stiffness modulus of 4,015 MPa, and the UKWTT yielded the lowest stiffness modulus of 1,857 MPa at 60 °C. From the HWTT results, it was found that the impact of moisture damage at 40 °C is not substantial compared to that at 50 °C. The conversion factor of HWTT at 40 °C, HWTT at 50 °C and UKWTT at 60 °C to SALS were 0.92, 0.74, and 0.63, respectively. Furthermore, the similar rutting performance among SALS, HWTT at 40 °C in dry and wet conditions, and HWTT at 50 °C in dry condition can be observed when the CF is applied. In the past decade, numerous studies have shown that incorporating geogrid in the pavement could effectively improve the pavement performance. The major benefit of using geogrid in the flexible pavement is to improve its rutting performance as the result of the reinforcement function of geogrid. Mechanical-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG) developed to provide the pavement performance prediction throughout its design life. However, MEPDG is not able to consider the effect of incorporating geogrid in the flexible pavement. In this study, a design procedure was proposed to obtain an equivalent geogrid pavement structure, which satisfies MEPDG design input requirements. In this procedure, a 2D finite element method was used to simulate geogrid reinforced and non-reinforced pavement structures. The iteration process based on stress-strain analysis of finite element model (FEM) used to obtain an equivalent structure input for MEPDG. The geogrid reinforced rutting performance can be predicted by analyzing the equivalent geogrid structure using MEPDG. A significant life improvement of pavement with geogrid was observed compared to pavement without geogrid. The results showed that the incorporating of geogrid in asphalt pavement layer significantly reduce the rutting of pavement layer, thus will contribute to extension of pavement service life. Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) and sinapic acid (SA) are 2 components separately isolated from 2 Asian medicinal plants, Hydnophytum formicarum Jack and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge. The antitumor activities of them were worth exploring, therefore, we examined their antitumor activities in A549, HCT116, HeLa, and Colo320 cancer cell lines by means of WST-1 assay. The results show that Tan IIA exerted far higher (IC50 from 1.0±0.0 to 166.3 ±24.0 µg/mL) antiproliferative activities than SA (IC50 from 2236.3 ± 484.1 to >10 000.0 µg/mL). Of the 4 cell lines, A549 cells were the most sensitive to Tan IIA; thus, we used Western blotting to explore the cytotoxic mechanisms of Tan IIA in A549 cells and found that they rely on simultaneous induction of apoptosis and necroptosis in the cells. Apoptosis was hallmarked by the induction of cleaved caspase-3 by Tan IIA and necroptosis by the necroptotic marker proteins cyclophilin A and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), as well as increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities. The necroptotic effect was confirmed by the necroptosis inhibitor necrostatin-1 (Nec-1), which eliminated these effects and restored cell survival rates. The levels of cyclophilin A decreased in response to the pan-caspase inhibitor z-VAD-fmk, and those of cleaved caspase-3 decreased in response to Nec-1. Conclusively, Tan IIA has the potential to prevent lung cancer and the mechanism seems to be apoptosis and necroptosis, of which the relationship is mutually interdependent. This is the first report of Tan IIA eliciting necroptosis in A549 cells. Tan IIA may be used for necroptosis-based cancer therapy, especially to overcome apoptosis resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Overloaded vehicles is one of the main problems that cause premature failure in road infrastructure. This paper presents an analysis of overloaded vehicles' effect on flexible pavement based on historical weigh-in-motion data. This article highlights the potential use of weigh-in-motion (WIM) data in pavement design by addressing the overload, the percentage of overloading, and axle load distribution. The percentage of overloaded vehicles can reach more than 80% of the total number of trucks and maybe one of the substantial factors that reduce pavement's service life. The actual traffic load is presented in the form of distribution for each type of axle load (axle load spectra) and the Vehicle Damage Factor (VDF) for each truck type. The effect of overload on the flexible pavement's design life is estimated by using the Cumulative ESAL comparison and Pavement Damage Ratio. Both analyses show that overload vehicles significantly decrease the pavement design life up to nearly half of the pavement life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sustainable roadway rating system (SR2S) consists of a set of indicators to comprehensively measure the sustainability performance of roadway projects. The sustainability level of the systems can be improved by implementing appropriate strategies pertaining to materials and energy. In the peer-reviewed literature, some studies have conducted shallow comparisons of different SR2Ss and no studies have compared the significance of material and energy indicators in existing SR2Ss. To bridge this research gap, five existing SR2Ss were considered. These five SR2Ss described overlapping categories of indicators. Material and energy-related indicators (MEIs) were identified from the representative SR2Ss by conducting content analysis. Similar indicators were regrouped into six different material and energy-related features (MEFs), corresponding to six categories of indicators: local materials; long-life designs; materials obtained using the reduce, reuse, and recycle (3Rs) concept; energy efficiency; earthwork; and hazardous materials. Based on the relative significance index (RSI), the weightings of the selected SR2Ss and the significance of MEIs according to six MEFs were explored. In terms of the aforementioned criteria, the Illinois Livable and Sustainable Transportation gives the greatest weight to material and energy (34.7% of the total points), whereas GreenLITES gives the least weight to material and energy (i.e., 26.8% of total points). Regarding MEFs, SR2Ss focus more on materials obtained by using the 3Rs concept and energy efficiency. This means that indicators pertaining to these two features were considered to contribute significantly to evaluations of roadway sustainability. Aside from 3Rs and energy efficiency, hazardous materials were deemed to be not highly relevant to SR2Ss. Objectives To investigate the association between benzodiazepine (BZD) use and the risk of chronic-onset poststroke pneumonia. Design Population-based propensity-matched retrospective cohort study. Setting Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Participants Patients newly diagnosed with stroke between 2000 and 2012 were identified and, after propensity score matching, 7516 patients were enrolled. Among these, 3758 patients received BZDs after stroke while 3758 did not. Outcome measures HRs for developing pneumonia over 1 month after stroke according to BZD use were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Analyses according to cumulative defined daily doses (cDDDs) of BZDs and stratification for age and sex were also performed. Results During a mean follow-up time of 4.4 years, 1027 patients in the BZD cohort and 478 patients in the non-BZD cohort developed pneumonia over 1 month after stroke. Patients using BZDs after stroke had a higher pneumonia risk than did those not using BZDs (52.2vs32.6 per 1000 person-years, adjusted HR (aHR)=2.21, 95% CI (CI)=1.97 to 2.48, p<0.001). Analyses based on cumulative BZD dose revealed that all BZD user subgroups were associated with a higher risk of pneumonia. The aHRs for patients taking 1-90, 91-365 and >365 cDDDs of BZDs were 2.28 (95% CI=2.01 to 2.58; p<0.001), 2.09 (95% CI=1.77 to 2.47; p<0.001) and 2.08 (95% CI=1.72 to 2.52; p<0.001), respectively. The significant association between BZD use and increased pneumonia risk persisted even after stratifying subgroups by age and sex. Results Overall, patients using thiazides after stroke had a lower risk of hip fracture than those not using thiazides (8.5 vs 13.9 per 1000 person-years, adjusted HR=0.64, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.89, p=0.007). Further sensitivity analysis based on the duration of thiazide use revealed that the risk of hip fracture tended to decrease as the duration of exposure of thiazides increased. However, the effect was significant only in patients with long-term use of thiazides (using thiazides for >365 days within 2 years after stroke), with a 59% reduction in the risk of hip fracture when compared with patients not using thiazide (adjusted HR=0.41, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.79, p=0.008). This research explores the shared learning of non-native EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers engaged in a voluntary teacher inquiry group over one year. This study aims to illuminate the most salient issues involved in the revision of Whole Language knowledge into their prospective contexts. It also examines how group interaction patterns facilitate the revision of Whole Language in EFL contexts. During the initial data analysis, a cyclical pattern was discovered, characterizing the group dynamic. This pattern was very close in form to what has been published as "the inquiry cycle." This similarity is noted, but a new, modified version of the inquiry cycle is formalized as part of the analysis. This study provides avenues for understanding how EFL teachers perceive the tensions involved in transferring Whole Language gained in the U.S. to their home contexts. The study examines the process of professional growth during participation in the study, a process that not only improved participants' knowledge of English language teaching and learning in different cross-cultural EFL contexts, but also supported and perpetuated the growth of a collaborative EFL teacher community. Peer evaluation is a teaching method by which students exchange written drafts of their work with their colleagues for the purpose of appraisal. The use of this method has become well known and widely adopted in the LI classroom environment (Beach, 1989). However, English writing courses have been considered as one of the most difficult subjects for most ESL/EFL (English as a second language/English as a foreign language) English teachers This study investigated the perspectives of using peer evaluation and teacher's feedback in terms of implicit and explicit correction in a writing class on one internet platform from 50 third-year students in the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at one University of Science and Technology in central Taiwan. Interviews from the writing teacher were conducted twice during the semester. A questionnaire for students was also employed in this study. The results of the study showed that most students had positive comments on peer evaluation. To understand the behavior of hot-poured bituminous-based crack sealants at low service temperatures and to predict their field performance, a constitutive stress-strain relationship must be described. This would allow predicting in situ crack sealant response to both thermal and traffic loading. This paper verifies the linear viscoelastic behavior of crack sealants. Ten sealants having high polymer contents were tested at -4 to -40°C using a Crack Sealant Bending Beam Rheometer (CSBBR). The convolution integral principle was used to obtain relaxation moduli from measured creep compliance data. A Prony series viscoelastic model was used to characterize mechanical behavior of crack sealant at low temperatures. The sealant's linear response was checked by implementing two conditions of linearity described by Marasteanu and Anderson. Simulation for the sealant linear viscoelastic deflection response during the loading and unloading was conducted using a three-dimensional finite-element model. This study concludes that mechanical behavior of crack sealants may be accurately described by a linear viscoelastic model at low service temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines language teachers' online student evaluations of teaching (SETs), with the purpose of understanding and self–evaluating teachers' performances, as along with the effectiveness of their teaching from students' perspectives. Data was collected from two sources: a questionnaire and face–to–face interviews. Twenty–five language teachers were invited to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire contained questions about the effectiveness and reliability of online SETs. Three teachers were selected to conduct a further interview. Results showed that online SETs could not really examine the appropriateness and effectiveness of a teacher's performance. More sources other than SETs must be provided for teachers to gain meaningful information about their performance and help improve the quality and application of their teaching. A novel plasma system based on double-pipe method was generated for the development of an atmospheric-pressure- plasma jet (APPJ). This APPJ deposits homogeneous thin films without unfavorable contamination in plasma source. The experimentally measured gas-phase temperature of the argon APPJ maintained at RF electric power was around 40 °C-80 °C, indicating this APPJ to be a low-temperature plasma. This study intended to build a collaborative student-teachers ' teaching community. Thirty-four junior college students in the Applied Foreign Languages Department at a national university in central Taiwan, who took the course of TESOL methodology, participated in this study. These student-teachers divided into groups and taught dramatic English to elementary school students nearby. They created more innovative materials and lessons, combining with drama plays, for elementary students to develop interests and motivation to learn English. The study was for this student-teachers' community to create English drama play and introduce the play to elementary school students nearby. The purpose of this performance was for student-teachers to provide models for those elementary students and further motivate them to learn English in a more contextual and meaningful way. During this study, those elementary students experienced the fun of reading storybooks and assuming different roles in role-playing. By integrating theories involved in drama into the curriculum of English teaching, hopefully, it will cultivate ability in terms of elementary students' interests, creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills to achieve the aim of being a whole person. Power dissipation is a crucial problem as the packing density of transistors increases in modern integrated circuits. Tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs), which have high energy filtering provided by band-to-band tunneling (BTBT), have been proposed as an alternative electronics architecture to decrease the energy loss in bias operation and to achieve steep switching at room temperature. Very recently, the BTBT behavior has been demonstrated in van der Waals heterostructures by using unintentionally doped semiconductors. The reason of the BTBT formation is attributed to a significant band bending near the heterointerface, resulting in carrier accumulations. In this work, to investigate charge transport in type-III transistors, we adopted the same band-bending concept to fabricate van der Waals BP/MoS2 heterostructures. Through analyzing the temperature dependence of their electrical properties, we carefully ruled out the contribution of metal-semiconductor contact resistances and improved our understanding of carrier injection in 2D type-III transistors. The BP/MoS2 heterostructures showed both negative differential resistance and 1/f2 current fluctuations, strongly demonstrating the BTBT operation. Finally, we also designed a TFET based on this heterostructure with an ionic liquid gate, and this TFET demonstrated an subthreshold slope can successfully surmount the thermal limit of 60 mV/decade. This work improves our understanding of charge transport in such layered heterostructures and helps to improve the energy efficiency of next-generation nanoscale electronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND:Rehabilitation can improve physical activity after stroke. However, patients may be more prone to falls and fractures because of balance and gait deficits. Few reports have studied the relationship between rehabilitation and subsequent fractures after ischemic stroke. OBJECTIVE:To investigate whether post-stroke rehabilitation affects fracture risk. METHODS:We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study based on the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with a newly diagnosed ischemic stroke between 2000 and 2012 were included. After propensity score matching, a total of 8,384 patients were enrolled. Half of the patients (4,192) received post-stroke rehabilitation within 1 month; the other half did not receive any post-stroke rehabilitation. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) for fractures among patients with and without rehabilitation within 1 year after ischemic stroke. Patients were further stratified by sex and age (20-64 and ≥65 years). RESULTS:Patients receiving post-stroke rehabilitation had a higher incidence of fracture (6.2 per 100 person-years) than those who did not (4.1 per 100 person-years) after adjustment for sociodemographic and coexisting medical conditions [HR = 1.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.25-1.87, p < 0.001]. The analyses performed after stratifying for sex and age showed that only older women undergoing rehabilitation had a significantly higher risk of fracture (HR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.21-2.17, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION:Rehabilitation after ischemic stroke is associated with an increased fracture risk in older women.
