Purpose: This study aimed to assess the impact of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among denture stomatitis patients with implant overdenture prostheses (IODs). Materials and Methods: The patients were recruited from a specialist dental practice according to selection criteria. The Candida spp. were identified and confirmed by the microbiological culture technique. Candida counts were estimated as colony-forming units (CFU/ml) at baseline, 15, 30, and 60 days. PDT was carried out twice a week with 72 h intervals for a period of 4 weeks. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. It included the demographic details of the patients, including age, gender, education, marital and socioeconomic status (SES), oral habits, and smoking status. In addition, the Oral Health Impact Profile-EDENT (OHIP-EDENT) scale was added to assess the OHRQoL of all patients before and after PDT treatment. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, the t-test and the Shapiro-Wilk test; statistical signifcance was set at p < 0.05. Results: At baseline, the overall mean Candida CFU/ml were quite high in the implant overdenture (IODs) samples, 37.12 ± 15.8, as compared to palatal mucosa samples with 5.1 ± 2.3. After PDT treatment, a statistically significant reduction was noted in the mean Candida CFU/ml on both surfaces at all follow-up visits. It was observed that all domains of OHIP-EDENT except for physical disability and handicap showed statistically significant improvement in mean scores after PDT treatment. FL, P1, P2, D2, and D3 had statistically significant mean score improvements of 2.2, 3.1, 2.2, 1.4, and 0.7, respectively. Furthermore, after PDT treatment, the total OHIP-EDENT score showed a statistically significant improvement of 11.6. Conclusion: PDT treatment has a positive impact on the OHRQoL for patients with denture stomatitis. Introduction: Anticancer drug-induced stomatitis can affect a patient's quality of life and the continuation of drug treatment. Although there have been reports of the occurrence of stomatitis associated with anticancer agents in clinical trials, few Japanese participants have been enrolled in clinical trials and have not been sufficiently investigated. In addition, there has been little attention on research on anticancer drugs associated with stomatitis by patient stratification with different carcinogenic sites. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the disproportionality associated with stomatitis for various types of anticancer drugs in different types of cancer patients using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. Methods: The aim of this study was to identify the disproportionality of stomatitis by analyzing the type of anticancer drug and cancer patients using the Japanese Pharmacovigilance Database. Data obtained from spontaneous reports of adverse events with more than 10 stomatitis outbreaks reported in the JADER database between April 2004 and March 2023 were analyzed. The safety signal for an adverse event was defined as the lower limit of the 95% confidence interval of the reported odds ratio of >1. Results: There were 6,178 reports of drugs associated with stomatitis. Among these, 41 drugs were suggested to be associated with stomatitis, and 41 drugs were detected as signals. These drugs were classified based on their efficacy: antipyrimidines (six drugs), folate metabolism antagonists (three drugs), alkylating agents (four drugs), platinum (three drugs), topoisomerase inhibitors (three drugs), microtubule inhibitors (three drugs), mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors (two drugs), kinase inhibitors (seven drugs), anti-growth factor antibodies (five drugs) immune checkpoint inhibitors (one drug), and others (four drugs). Conclusion: The drugs that may be associated with stomatitis were cell cycle-dependent drugs, epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and mTOR inhibitors. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of implant failure in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and investigate the potential association between OLP and peri‐implant diseases. Materials and Methods: Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases were searched for studies with no time restrictions. Meta‐analysis was performed calculating pooled proportion of peri‐implantitis (PI), peri‐implant mucositis (PIM), and bleeding on probing (BOP) prevalence using fixed‐effects model. Odds ratio and corresponding 95% CI were calculated to assess the potential risk of PI, PIM, and BOP in dental implant patients with OLP compared to healthy controls. Results: Implant failure rate was 4.38% at the patient level and 4.37% at the implant level. Six patients (3.92%) from five studies were diagnosed with oral cancer after receiving implant. The prevalence of PI, PIM, and BOP at the implant level were 14.00%, 20.00%, and 40.00%, respectively. There was no significant difference in the occurrence of PI and PIM between OLP patients and healthy controls. Conclusions: Stabilized OLP is not considered a significant risk factor for peri‐implant diseases. It is advised against placing implants or prostheses during the acute phase of the disease. Introduction: Incorporation of AKT inhibitors into adjuvant therapy for advanced or metastatic breast cancer has improved clinical outcomes. However, the safety of AKT inhibitors should be better evaluated, given the possibility of prolonging survival and impacting patient quality of life. Our aim was to assess how the addition of AKT inhibitors to adjuvant therapy affects treatment-related adverse events. Methods: We evaluated binary outcomes with risk ratios (RRs), with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We used DerSimonian and Laird random-effect models for all endpoints. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics. R, version 4.2.3, was used for statistical analyses. Results: A total of seven RCTs comprising 1619 patients with BC. The adverse effects that show significance statistical favoring the occurrence of adverse effects in AKT inhibitor were diarrhea (RR 3.05; 95% CI 2.48–3.75; p < 0.00001; I2 = 49%), hyperglycemia (RR 3.4; 95% CI 1.69–6.83; p = 0.00058; I2 = 75%), nausea (RR 1.69; 95% CI 1.34–2.13; p = 0.000008; I2 = 42%), rash (RR 2.79; 95% CI 1.49–5.23; p = 0.0013; I2 = 82%), stomatitis (RR 2.24; 95% CI 1.69–2.97; p < 0.00001; I2 = 16%) and vomiting (RR 2.99; 95% CI 1.85–4.86; p = 0.00009; I2 = 42%). There was no significant difference between the groups for alopecia (p = 0.80), fatigue (p = 0.087), and neuropathy (p = 0.363380). Conclusion: The addition of AKT inhibitors to adjuvant therapy was associated with an increase in treatment-related adverse events. These results provide safety information for further clinical trials evaluating AKT inhibitor therapy for patients with metastatic BC. Statement of the Problem: Chemotherapy-induced mucositis is the most common complication during cancer treatment. This complication can lead to pain, increased risk of infection and malnutrition. Therefore, it is important to find a solution to reduce the severity and duration of side effects. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of Mucosamin spray as an adjunct for prevention of oral mucositis in children under chemotherapy. Materials and Method: This parallel-design clinical trial evaluated 48 patients aged 5 to 15 years with leukemia and lymphoma presenting to the Hematology Department of Mofid and Mahak Hospitals. The patients were randomly divided into two groups (n=24). Before starting chemotherapy, all patients received oral hygiene instructions (toothbrushing without flossing). Patients in both groups were requested to use a mouthwash composed of nystatin, aluminum-magnesium hydroxide suspension (aluminum MgS), and diphenhydramine for 1 min every morning on a daily basis starting the day before treatment. Patients in the intervention group were also requested to spray their entire oral mucosa with Mucosamin spray 3 times a day in addition to using the mouthwash. Patients were requested to refrain from eating and drinking for 1h after spraying. The patients were clinically examined by a senior dental student once every other day for 20 days regarding the occurrence, severity, and duration of oral mucositis. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and log rank test. Results: No significant difference was noted between the two groups in the incidence, severity, or time of development of mucositis (p> 0.05). The 7-day non-recovery percentage was 72.7% (SE= 13.4) and 25.0% (SE= 15.3) in the control and test groups, respectively, indicating shorter duration (faster healing) of mucositis in the intervention group (p= 0.01). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it seems that prophylactic application of Mucosamin spray can shorten the course of oral mucositis, in case of its occurrence. Background: Aprepitant, fosaprepitant, and netupitant are three common neurokinin-1 receptor antagonists (NK-1RAs) used to prevent chemotherapyinduced nausea and vomiting, following highly or moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. Understanding their different adverse event (AE) profiles may help clinicians make appropriate treatment decisions. Methods: All data collected from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database from the first quarter of 2004 to the fourth quarter of 2023 underwent disproportionality analysis to detect, evaluate, and compare AE signals of the three NK-1RAs. Results: A total of 3,904, 1,123, and 243 AE reports related to aprepitant, fosaprepitant, and netupitant, respectively, were extracted from the FAERS database. Of these, more than 50% of respondents were female, and most of them were aged 45-65 years. General disorders and administration-site conditions, and gastrointestinal disorders were themost frequent signals in the system organ class of the three NK-1RA drugs. In addition, aprepitant was strongly associated with joint deposit (ROR = 26.27) and fosaprepitant was closely related to seizure-like phenomena (ROR = 26.90); two preferred terms (PTs) were not mentioned in the manual. Statistically, netupitant was likely to induce death (N = 63, ROR = 8.78, 95% CI: 6.75-11.42). Additionally, neutropenic colitis, colitis, and stomatitis were unique to netupitant. Furthermore, the AE profiles of the three NK-1RA drugs were different by gender. Conclusion: The AE profiles for aprepitant, fosaprepitant, and netupitant were different. In addition to paying attention to common AEs, clinicians need to pay attention to new emerging AEs, such as joint deposit, seizure-like phenomena, neutropenic colitis, colitis, and stomatitis, regarding the three NK-1RA drugs. Furthermore, the AE compositions of the three NK-1RA drugs were different in different genders, and clinicians should take these factors into account when selecting NK-1RAs for CINV treatment. Objectives: Ixekizumab, an interleukin (IL)-17A inhibitor, exerts its therapeutic effects in psoriasis by inhibiting the interleukin (IL)-17 signaling pathway. Common adverse reactions to ixekizumab include injection site reactions and upper respiratory tract infections (URIs), while occurrences of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and multiple mucosal ulcers are infrequent. We present a case of a 51-year-old man who developed multiple mucosal ulcers after ixekizumab treatment. Methods: A 51-year-old man presented to our hospital with a 1-month history of pharyngalgia. The flexible laryngoscope displayed mild hyperemia in the pharyngeal mucosa and tonsils, redness and swelling of the epiglottis, as well as multiple ulcers in the oral cavity, uvula, and epiglottis. These ulcers did not improve with conventional treatment. Results: Upon evaluation, the ulcers were an immune-related adverse event induced by ixekizumab. Consequently, a decision was made to discontinue the drug and initiate a therapeutic regimen including corticosteroids and thalidomide. Eventually, the patient's symptoms abated. Conclusions: Biologics are now becoming increasingly popular in psoriasis. Aim: To investigate the rate of dispensed antibiotic prescriptions to children and adolescents with PFAPA and compare this with the rate for children in the general population. Furthermore, to compare dispensed antibiotic prescription rates before and after a diagnosis of PFAPA was established. Methods: Patients aged 0–17 years and diagnosed with PFAPA between 1 January 2006 to 31 October 2017 were included retrospectively. Data on dispensed drug prescriptions were obtained from the Swedish National Prescribed Drug Register. Results: The PFAPA cohort received more antibiotic prescriptions than the general population in all but one of the age groups and time periods that were analysed. The largest difference was seen in 2014–2017 in the youngest age group (0–4 years) when children with PFAPA received 1218 antibiotic prescriptions per 1000 person years compared to 345 in the general population (IRR 3.5; 95% CI 2.8–4.4). The yearly number of antibiotic prescriptions to PFAPA patients was reduced from 2.1 before diagnosis to 0.8 after diagnosis, a reduction of 62%. Conclusion: This study shows higher rates of dispensed antibiotic prescriptions for children with PFAPA than in the general population. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the therapeutic effect of the Punica granatum (PG) flower on recurrent aphthous stomatitis in comparison with corticosteroid therapy. Materials and Methods: This cross‐over randomized clinical trial was conducted on the patients who had been referred to Shiraz Dental School for their RAS in 2021. All the participants used both P. granatum flower tablets and Triadent a month apart for wash‐out time and all compared themselves. In the experimental group, 30 patients received pomegranate flower tablets, three tablets daily, for 6 days. In the control group, oral paste Triadent has been prescribed three times a day for 6 days. The visual analog scale (VAS) and the size of RAS were evaluated on Days 0–6. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 21. The Wilcoxon test was used. Results: The mean age of participants was 27.8 ± 14.77 years old. In this study, 15 patients (50%) were men and 15 patients (50%) were women. The mean value of VAS after using prescribed treatment in both evaluated groups on all days was significantly different such that the VAS values were lower for PG flower tablets than Triadent (p value < 0.05). The size of oral lesions in participants who used PG flower tablets was significantly less than those who used Triadent on all evaluation days (p value < 0.05) except on Day 1 (p value = 0.29). The descending slope of VAS from Days 1 to 6 for both Triadent and PG flower tablet users was significant and noticeable. (p value < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the result of this study, both P. granatum flower tablet and Triadent are useful in reducing the size, period of healing, and VAS of patients with RAS, but the PG flower tablet is more effective. Featured Application: The use of a cymenol-based mouth rinse is safe and well-tolerated by patients, with no reports of side effects or adverse events. The aim of this study was to evaluate a newly formulated mouth rinse containing cymenol in patients undergoing supportive periodontal care in terms of safety (primary outcome) and the impact on dental biofilm and gingival inflammation (secondary outcomes). This research was designed as a pilot, controlled, randomized, parallel, triple-blinded, single-center, clinical trial of a 12-week duration. Adverse events and product perception were assessed by a questionnaire. Clinical, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), compliance, tooth staining, dentin hypersensitivity and microbiological variables were also evaluated. Student T, Mann–Whitney-U and Chi-square tests were applied. Thirty participants (15 per group) were included, randomized and followed for 12 weeks. No adverse events were reported. The questionnaire showed an overall rating of 7.2 (out of 10) in the experimental group and of 8.2 in the control group (p = 0.165) at 12 weeks. No statistically significant differences were observed in terms of gingival health, tooth staining, dentin hypersensitivity or microbiological outcomes between groups at baseline, 6- and 12-week visits. Background: Due to their modulatory effect on biofilm growth, bacterial gene expressions, and host-modulation effects, fermented foods and probiotic products could potentially have a protective role against peri-implant diseases. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association of consumption of fermented foods and products containing probiotics, with peri-implant health and diseases. Methods: A total of 126 implants were included. The peri-implant health status (peri-implantitis, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implant health) was assessed through Chicago's Classification of periodontal and peri-implant Diseases and Conditions. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the consumption patterns of fermented and probiotic foods and product. One-way ANOVA was employed to compare the 3 peri-implant conditions categories in terms of fermented food and probiotic consumption. Results: There were significant differences in the daily and general consumption of yogurt, probiotic yogurt, kefir, ayran, vinegar, pomegranate syrup, whole meal bread, and homemade butter among peri-implantitis, peri-implant mucositis and peri-implant health (p < 0.05). The peri-implant health group consumed significantly more yogurt, kefir, ayran, vinegar, whole wheat bread, and homemade butter than peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Conclusion: A higher consumption of fermented and probiotic foods may be associated with peri-implant health. Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common chronic inflammatory oral disease that negatively impacts the quality of life. Current therapies aim to reduce pain and healing process yet challenges such as rapid loss due to salivary flushing in topical drugs and adverse effects due to prolonged use of systemic medications require further notice. Low-level laser therapy is reported with immediate pain relief and faster healing thus preserving the potential for optimal treatment modalities. This review critically analyses and summarizes the effectiveness of LLLT in reducing pain scores and healing time of RAS. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Scopus using keywords of low-level laser therapy, photo-biomodulation therapy, and recurrent aphthous stomatitis. RCTs between 1967 to June 2022, presenting characteristics of the laser and reporting pain score and/or healing time of RAS after irradiation were included. Animal studies and recurrent aphthous ulcers with a history of systemic conditions were excluded. Studies were critically appraised using the RoB 2 tool. A meta-analysis was performed using inverse variance random effects. Results: Fourteen trials with a total of 664 patients were included. Reduced pain was reported in 13 studies, while shortened healing time was presented in 4. The pooling of two studies after CO2 irradiation demonstrated faster healing time compared to placebo (MD − 3.72; 95% CI − 4.18, − 3.25). Conclusion: Pain score and healing time of RAS were reduced after irradiation with LLLT. Laser therapy has shown effectiveness in promoting wound healing by influencing various physiological factors such as blood flow, cytokines, histamine, nerve signals, lymphocyte function, tissue oxygenation, and cell growth. This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Photobiomodulation (PBM) treatment, by using diode laser, in modifying the levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL1β) and transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGFβ-1) in patients diagnosed with aphthous stomatitis. A before-after interventional design was conducted over 10 months with 20 subjects. Data on demographic details and serum concentrations of IL1β and TGFβ-1 were collected pre-treatment and on Days 3 and 7 post-treatments. The intervention involved a single session of four 30-second applications of a QuickLase dual-wavelength laser operating at 980 nm. Results show significant reductions in IL1β and TGFβ-1 levels after 7 days of treatment, indicating a time-dependent effect of PBM therapy on these inflammatory markers. Introduction: Busulfan is a common component of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (alloHCT) conditioning, however interpatient pharmacokinetic variability can result in enhanced toxicity or increased relapse risk. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) can minimize variability, yet the optimal frequency of TDM is unknown. We compared outcomes for patients with one versus two sets of busulfan TDM during myeloablative conditioning (MAC) prior to alloHCT. Methods: We analyzed the impact of busulfan TDM frequency and dose adjustments, with the primary outcome being relapse-free survival (RFS). Other outcomes included the incidence of acute and chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD), oral mucositis, pulmonary toxicity, sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), the cumulative incidence of relapse (CIR), and overall survival (OS). Results: Twenty-two patients underwent one set of sampling while 53 patients underwent two sets. Similar baseline characteristics were observed between the groups. There were no significant differences observed in RFS by day +180 (77.3% vs. 79.2%, p = 1.0), CIR by day +180 (18.2% vs. 17.8%, p = 0.74), or OS (p = 0.73). The incidences of acute GVHD, chronic GVHD, SOS, and severe mucositis were also similar. In each group, 63% received busulfan dose adjustments after one set, with 52.8% receiving further dose adjustments following the second set. Conclusion: We observed no significant difference in alloHCT outcomes between patients who underwent one versus two sets of busulfan TDM sampling, suggesting that a single-time TDM and dose adjustment may be adequate to maximize outcomes after MAC alloHCT. Objective: This clinical trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Jiandu granule, a Chinese herbal medicine formula, for preventing oral mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Materials and Methods: A single‐centre, open‐label, randomised controlled trial was conducted, enrolling 138 patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Patients were randomly allocated to either the experimental group (n = 69) or the control group (n = 69). Both groups received concurrent chemoradiotherapy and standard care for oral mucositis, with the experimental group additionally receiving Jiandu granule intervention. The primary outcome was the incidence of severe oral mucositis (grade III to IV). Results: In the full‐analysis set, severe oral mucositis occurred in 14 of 69 (20.3%) patients in the experimental group and 31 of 69 (44.9%) patients in the control group (absolute risk reduction: 24.6%; relative risk reduction: 54.8%; p = 0.002; number needed to treat: 4). Jiandu granule was associated with mild/moderate gastrointestinal reactions, with an overall incidence of 5.9%. Conclusion: Jiandu granule reduced the incidence of severe oral mucositis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients during concurrent chemoradiotherapy and had an acceptable safety profile. Background: Cannabidiol (CBD), extracted from Cannabis sativa, has anticancer, anti-inflammation, and analgesic effects. Nevertheless, its therapeutic effect and the mechanism by which it alleviates oral mucositis (OM) remain unclear. Aims: To explore the impact of CBD on OM in mice and on human oral keratinocyte (HOK) cells. Study Design: Expiremental study. Methods: The Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform, GeneCard, DisGeNET, and Gene Expression Omnibus databases were used to conduct therapeutic target gene screening for drugs against OM. Cytoscape software was used to build networks linking components, targets, and diseases. The STRING database facilitated analysis of intertarget action relationships, and the target genes were analyzed for Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment. Occurrence of serum inflammation-related factors, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and immunohistochemistry were used to assess OM injury. Cell proliferation, migration, pyroptosis, and apoptosis of HOK cells under different treatments were assessed. Molecular mechanisms were elucidated through western blot and quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction analyses. Results: A total of 49 overlapping genes were pinpointed as potential targets, with NF-κB1, PIK3R1, NF-κBIA, and AKT1 being recognized as hub genes among them. Additionally, the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB and interleukin-17 signaling pathways were identified as relevant. Our in vivo experiments showed that CBD significantly reduced the proportion of lesion area, mitigated oral mucosal tissue lesions, and downregulated the expression levels of genes and levels of proteins, including NLRP3, P65, AKT, and PI3K. In vitro experiments indicated that CBD enhanced HOK cell proliferation and migration and reduced apoptosis through inhibition of the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway and pyroptosis. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a novel mechanism for controlling OM, in which CBD suppresses the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway and pyroptosis, thereby mitigating OM symptoms. A line of 25 cull cows were all found to have ulcerative lesions of the tongue at post-mortem inspection in a New Zealand slaughter plant. A further 9 of 10 cows inspected at the farm of origin had similar oral lesions. There were no other clinical signs or indicators of ill-health observed at ante-mortem inspection in the abattoir or on the farm. The cows had been fed baleage for 3 weeks prior to slaughter, made from pasture in paddocks heavily contaminated with yellow bristle grass (Setaria pumila). There was extensive and deep transverse linear ulceration in the lingual fossa immediately rostral to the torus linguae. At histological examination, full-thickness ulceration of the stratified squamous epithelium was observed with a bed of disorganised collagenous tissue and extensive mixed inflammatory infiltrate extending into the sub-epithelial connective tissue and skeletal muscle. Barbed plant fragments were embedded in both the superficial and deeper areas of inflammation. Detailed examination of the baleage also found that yellow bristle grass seedheads were present. Based on the presence of barbed plant material in the tongue and yellow bristle grass seeds in the baleage, a diagnosis of ulcerative stomatitis associated with yellow bristle grass was made. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral mucosal disease. Despite a variety of scientific articles have been available till date, merely a few scientometric analyses have been systematically carried out in this field. The objective of this study was to recognize the hotspots and research trends related to RAS via bibliometric approach. The Elsevier's Scopus database was searched to retrieve qualified literature through an advanced search strategy on 9 Feb 2023. The basic information was collected as following: article type, publication year, journals, impact factor, the count of citations, citation density, keywords, authors, contributing institutions and country. A list of 986 publications were identified from 1933 to 2022, and the number of citations for each paper varied from 0 to 283. A steady increasing trend in the number of documents could be observed each decade with the summit in 2010s. Controlled study (n = 334) and major clinical study (n = 192) were the most common types of study design. Scully C (n = 26) was identified as the most productive author. United States (n = 166) and Turkey (n = 101) top the list of dedicating countries. Practical relevanceFeline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a debilitating disease for cats and a challenge for veterinarians and cat caregivers alike. Recent literature indicates that the disease is immune-mediated in nature and likely associated with a chronic viral infection in patients with higher alpha diversity of their subgingival microbiome. The immune-mediated nature of FCGS includes both local as well as systemic effects, and the transcriptomic analysis of affected patients supports these findings.Treatment optionsLocalized therapy in the form of surgical extraction of all, or nearly all, teeth continues to be the mainstay of treatment. For cats that do not respond to surgical management, medical management, in the form of immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory therapy, remains an option. Analgesia is of fundamental importance. Immunomodulation utilizing mesenchymal stromal cell therapy provides an alternative treatment avenue for refractory patients and likely targets the chronic viral infection present in this disease. The potential for treatment stratification and use of novel systemic treatment options may be revealed as the molecular pathways involved in this disease are better described.AimsThis review outlines current and emerging concepts linking available science pertaining to FCGS and clinical management of the disease.Evidence baseThe article draws on the best evidence base at this juncture and is also driven by the authors' collective experience of working on the disease for over a decade.

Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a painful, immune-mediated, oral mucosal inflammatory disease in cats. The etiology of FCGS remains unclear, with evidence pointing potentially toward a viral cause. Full-mouth tooth extraction is the current standard of care, and cats that are non-responsive to extraction therapy may need lifelong medical management and, in some cases, euthanasia. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (adMSCs) have been demonstrated to have advantages in the treatment and potentially the cure of non-responsive FCGS in cats. Therefore, adMSCs have attracted a series of ongoing clinical trials in the past decade. AdMSC therapy immediately after full-mouth tooth extraction was not explored, and we postulate that it may benefit the overall success rate of FCGS therapy. Here, we aim to summarize the current knowledge and impact of adMSCs for the therapeutic management of FCGS and to suggest a novel modified approach to further increase the efficacy of FCGS treatment in cats.

One of the actual problems of modern orthopedic dentistry is the development of optimal materials that, by their physical and chemical properties, would be most biocompatible with the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. The purpose of this work was to substantiate the use of base materials and acrylates for the manufacture of removable prostheses and to increase the effectiveness of orthopedic treatment of patients with complete or partial absence of teeth basing on the review of literary sources. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Google Scholar from 2019 to January 2024. There was no restriction on the date of publication or language. Searches were conducted according to MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) using the following search terms: "removable prosthetics", "removable prostheses", "dental base materials", "acrylates", "materials science", "adaptation". A total of 82 sources of literature were selected and processed during the primary analysis. After systematization of the selected information using general scientific methods, 70 most relevant sources remained. Exclusion criteria: publications that did not meet the purpose of this review, publication language other than English and Ukrainian. Used methods: bibliographic and analytical. The relation between the properties of the materials from which the prosthesis is made and the mucous membrane of the prosthetic bed was revealed, and the direct dependence of the quality of the prosthesis, the period of wearing, and the level of oral hygiene was determined. The base material must be easy to use so that the prosthesis can be manufactured and repaired without the use of a significant number of technological processes and equipment. The most common and popular material for manufacturing the bases of partial and complete removable prostheses are acrylates due to their low cost and the simplicity of the application technology, which does not require expensive equipment. The analysis of these literature sources showed that the percentage ratio of the composition of removable prostheses, which includes acrylic plastic, is more than 80%. However, except all existing advantages, they have a number of disadvantages. The main unsatisfactory quality of acrylic prostheses is their negative impact on the tissues of the prosthetic bed, which is reflected in the sensitivity of the mucous membrane and the phenomena of inflammation. Most often, this is manifested as a result of the reproduction of pathogenic microflora, which is concentrated on the surface of the base of the prosthesis. It is worth remembering that removable prostheses are inherently combined irritants that have a whole set of negative effects on the mucous membrane of the prosthetic bed, leading to its chronic inflammation. The above-described negative properties of acrylic plastic became the impetus for the creation of other types of materials. This problem is extremely urgent, and despite the serious resources spent on its elimination, so far no optimal way to increase not only the functionality and durability of the service, but also the safety of using removable orthopedic constructions has been found.

Abstract Oral contact dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction that is not common in patients but can be caused using certain toothpastes. As a result, patients experience pain, ulceration, erythema, burning sensation, vesicles and so on. Stannous fluoride is an inorganic compound used in some toothpastes for its antimicrobial, anti‐hypersensitivity and anti‐decay benefits, among others. We present a case series of 15 patients with similar types of oral lesions who all used toothpaste containing stannous fluoride, which suggested a potential association between the use of toothpaste containing stannous fluoride and oral dermatitis.

Unfortunately, the occurrence of various pathologies in the ENT organs still remains one of the pressing problems in global healthcare. The frequent manifestation of unwanted pathologies forces us to change methods, and sometimes to introduce something new into the medical care provided to patients. Researchers from the Center for Medical Statistics of the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Sciences and Medical Research, Moscow Health Department, having conducted a detailed analysis of the activities of otorhinolaryngological departments in medical organizations in the city of Moscow, found that in 2022 the number of all visits to otorhinolaryngologists exceeded 4.5 million, of which 45.7% were children, and 54.2% were committed by persons over 18 years of age. Preventive visits of patients to doctors for 2018–2022 increased from 29.3 to 37.8%. Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx are among the most common diseases of the ENT organs. Given the proliferation, development of technology and possible tensions, they still remain a pressing issue. That is why various new options for drug therapy are being proposed that would be most effective, and one of these new drugs is Lorothricin, a combination drug that has shown itself to be the best in a number of studies and clinical cases. In a review article, based on our experience and literature data. We present the problem of treating patients with sore throat due to acute pharyngitis, tonsillitis and gingivitis.

Background Materials and Methods Results Conclusion Oral mucositis (OM) is considered one of the most common side effects of patients undergoing cancer therapy. OM prevention plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of cancer treatment and the patient's quality of life. Different preventive treatments have been proposed in clinical trials, however with inconclusive results.A systematic review search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database to answer the PICO question: in cancer patients, do specific topical agents compared to standard treatments or placebo reduce the onset and severity of oral mucositis? The risk of bias was assessed, and a network meta‐analysis was conducted.Of 2913 results, 30 randomized clinical trials were considered suitable for inclusion. A total of 2564 patients were analyzed, of which 1284 belonged to the test group and 1280 belonged to the control group. Natural products were the most used, followed mainly by antimicrobial agents, coating agents, and basic oral care measures. Topical sucralfate resulted in the most powerful intervention for the OM prevention (OR = 0.04, 95%C.I. = 0.01–0.25, p‐value = 0.001).Due to its cytoprotective action, low cost, ease of administration, and safety, sucralfate could become a potential ally to prevent the onset of OM during cancer therapy. Background: Uremic stomatitis is often unfamiliar to healthcare professionals. This study presents five cases of uremic stomatitis, providing a comprehensive analysis of their demographic distribution, clinicopathological features, and management strategies based on existing literature. Methods: Data were collected from centers across Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico. Electronic searches were conducted in five databases supplemented by manual scrutiny and gray literature. Results: The series consisted of three men and two women with a mean age of 40.2 years. Lesions mostly appeared as white plaques, particularly on the tongue (100%). The median blood urea level was 129 mg/dL. Histopathological analysis revealed epithelial changes, including acanthosis and parakeratosis, with ballooned keratinocytes in the suprabasal region. Oral lesions resolved subsequent to hemodialysis in three cases (75%). Thirty-seven studies comprising 52 cases of uremic stomatitis have been described hitherto. Most patients were male (65.4%) with a mean age of 43.6 years. Clinically, grayish-white plaques (37.3%) and ulcers/ulcerations (28.9%) were common, particularly on the tongue (30.9%). Hemodialysis was performed on 27 individuals. The resolution rate of oral lesions was 53.3%. Conclusion: Earlier recognition of uremic stomatitis, possibly associated with long-term uremia, holds the potential to improve outcomes for patients with undiagnosed chronic kidney disease. Background: Few studies have examined health related Quality of Life (HR-QoL) during the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC) with even fewer focusing on the impact of oral mucositis (OM) on HR-QoL. Studies performed during treatment of HNC makes it possible to follow fluctuations in HR-QoL, OM and other treatment related side effects. The aim was to prospectively analyze HR-QoL, changes in clinical variables and the impact of OM on HR-QoL during HNC treatment. Materials and methods: Patients were recruited before commencing curative cancer treatment and were given professional oral care weekly during oncologic treatment. HR-QoL was reported before, during (week 2, 4 and 6) and three months after treatment using the EORTC Quality of Life questionnaires C30 and H&N35 and the stimulated whole salivary secretion rate was determined at the same time-points. OM (erythema and ulceration) was registered using the Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale (OMAS), at baseline, weekly during treatment and post treatment. Differences in HR-QoL between different timepoints were analyzed. To analyze the impact of OM on HR-QoL the patients were categorized into two groups: no/mild OM (OMAS ulceration score 0–1) or severe OM (OMAS ulceration score ≥ 2) and HR-QoL was compared between the two OM groups at three timepoints during treatment. Results: Fifty-seven patients (43 men, 14 women), with a mean age of 58 years were included. Patients reported progressively impaired HR-QoL, with peak issues noted at weeks 4 and 6, particularly in social eating, senses, appetite loss, sticky saliva, and decreasing salivary secretion rates were determined. Patients with severe OM reported worse HR-QoL compared to those with no/mild OM. Persistent problems 3 months post treatment were appetite loss, dry mouth, senses (smell and taste) and problems with social eating. Conclusion: Patients experienced exacerbated symptoms and problems weeks 4 and 6 of oncological treatment, especially among those with severe OM, stressing the importance of clinically monitoring the patients to reduce and alleviate their symptoms. Persistent problems three months post treatment are likely associated with the reduced salivary secretion rate indicating that patients should be monitored also after completed oncological treatment. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the expression levels of various T helper (Th) cell-secreted cytokines in recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Case-control studies comparing the serum or salivary levels of cytokines between RAS patients and healthy controls were searched in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar prior to September 30, 2023. Cytokines produced by Th1 (interleukin [IL]-1, IL-2, IL-8, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α], interferon gamma [IFN-γ]), Th2 (IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-13), and Th17 (IL-17A) cells were investigated. The standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated to detect the difference. A total of 20 studies comprising 1070 RAS patients and 536 healthy controls were included. RAS patients had significantly higher salivary levels of IL-2 (SMD = 4.15, 95%CI 0.83–7.48), IL-5 (SMD = 0.53, 95%CI 0.05–1.00), IL-6 (SMD = 0.48, 95%CI 0.12–0.84), IL-12 (SMD = 0.94, 95%CI 0.18–1.71), and TNF-α (SMD = 1.31, 95%CI 0.44–2.18) compared to healthy controls. Serum levels of IL-6 (SMD = 0.48, 95%CI 0.30–0.66), TNF-α (SMD = 0.70, 95%CI 0.22–1.17), and IFN-γ (SMD = 0.72, 95%CI 0.17–1.28) were significantly increased, while serum IL-10 levels (SMD = -2.25, 95%CI -3.99 to -0.52) were reduced in RAS patients. Patients diagnosed with major RAS had markedly elevated serum IL-8 levels (SMD = 0.39, 95%CI 0.07–0.71) and a trend toward higher serum IL-6 levels (SMD = 0.51, 95%CI -0.02 to 1.04) than those with minor RAS. In conclusion, Th1/Th2-related cytokines, especially IL-2, IL-6, and TNF-α, are involved in the pathogenesis of RAS development and progression and are potential therapeutic targets for RAS. Aim This study investigated the effectiveness of a drug-modified tissue conditioner in an animal model of denture stomatitis. Methods and Results Wistar rats wore a Candida albicans -contaminated palatal device for 4 days. Next, nystatin (Nys) or chlorhexidine (Chx) were added to a tissue conditioner in their raw or β-cyclodextrin-complexed (βCD) forms at their minimum inhibitory concentrations. As controls, one group was not subjected to any procedure (NC), one group used sterile devices, one group had denture stomatitis but was not treated (DS), and another had the devices relined with the tissue conditioner without the addition of any drug (Soft). After 4 days of treatment, treatment effectiveness was assessed visually, histologically, and through CFU count, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) assays. Rats from the Soft, Nys, Nys:βCD, and Chx groups presented a significant decrease in the microbial load compared with the untreated group. Treatment groups showed lower MPO and NAG activity compared to the non-treated group. Conclusions The addition of antifungals to a soft tissue conditioner can be a promising approach for denture stomatitis treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION Waterpipe smoking (WPS) is gaining popularity worldwide, especially in the Middle East, and significantly affects oral health. Nicotine stomatitis (NS) is an inflammatory response of the palate to the heat and chemical irritation caused by tobacco. The high temperatures of hot beverages have been found to have a synergistic effect. This study investigated the association of NS among waterpipe smokers and hot beverage drinkers. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in several public locations in Kuwait. Demographic data, smoking habits, and hot beverage intake were recorded using questionnaires. An oral examination was performed with informed consent, and the occurrence of NS was recorded. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS statistics version 28.0 (IBM Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). RESULTS Of the 211 participants, 55 subjects (26.1%) presented with NS. All the patients with NS drank hot beverages, while 37 (67.3%) patients with NS were waterpipe smokers and hot beverage drinkers. Smokers with NS smoked significantly more tobacco heads (Z= -2.606; p=0.009) and for more hours per day (Z= -2.222; p=0.026). CONCLUSIONS This study explored the association between WPS and NS in Kuwait. Waterpipe smokers and males were more likely to present with NS. Also, the number of tobacco heads and the number of hours of WPS were found to correlate with the presence of lesions. Effective strategies to reduce WPS need to be implemented. Aims and Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of different nonpharmacological treatments for severe radiation‐induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. Background: Radiation‐induced oral mucositis is highly prevalent in patients with head and neck cancer. Current medications for radiation‐induced oral mucositis are limited in effectiveness and susceptible to side effects, and while there is an increasing adoption of nonpharmacological interventions, the optimal one remains unclear. Design: Systematic review and network meta‐analysis based on the PRISMA‐NMA guidelines. Methods: Six databases were searched. Two authors independently performed the literature screening, data extraction and methodological quality assessment of the included studies. Traditional pairwise meta‐analysis was performed by R Studio. A network meta‐analysis was then conducted to assess the effects of nonpharmacological interventions for severe radiation‐induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. Results: Fifty‐two studies involving seven types of nonpharmacological interventions were enrolled. The network meta‐analysis indicated that natural plant‐based therapies might be the most effective, health education interventions might be the second most effective, and honey might be the third most effective interventions for reducing the incidence of severe radiation‐induced oral mucositis. For reducing the incidence of severe oral mucositis‐related pain, the pairwise meta‐analysis showed that only natural plant‐based therapies and health education interventions were effective. Conclusions: Nonpharmacological interventions are effective in the management of severe radiation‐induced oral mucositis among patients with head and neck cancer. Relevance to clinical practice: Nonpharmacological interventions are a category of safe and effective adjunctive therapies that should be encouraged in clinical practice. The use of prostheses in the oral cavity creates favorable conditions for Candida colonization, which may subsequently lead to Candida -associated denture stomatitis (CADS). Due to its many contributing factors and frequent relapses, CADS is difficult to manage. Given the rise in drug resistance among fungal species, it is critical to develop new therapeutic approaches, reduce the required dosage of medications, and minimize the toxicity and side effects of therapy. Salivary lactoferrin, a multifunctional glycoprotein, is thought to be the first line of defense against microbial invasion of mucosal surfaces. Current research emphasizes the capability of lactoferrin and its derivatives to eliminate a broad spectrum of Candida species. It may be an appealing option for use in monotherapy or in combination with common medications for oral stomatitis treatment. Denture stomatitis (DS) is a very common disease in wearers of removable complete and partial dentures with a worldwide prevalence in the range of 20–67%. Both industrially developed and impoverished nations are affected by the illness. DS is often associated with ill-fitting dentures or a fungal infection with Candida spp. Candida is normally found in the oral cavity microbiota, but it can be harmful to the health of elderly people with underlying diseases. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to offer the most recent information about the epidemiology, etiology, and global distribution of Candida species associated with DS through a systematic review. Several databases, including Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus, were used to conduct an extensive search of the literature published in the previous 20 years. The selection of studies was performed by two authors. The extracted data were as follows: author, year of publication, country, sample, frequency of DS, method of diagnosing stomatitis, species of Candida, risk factors, and etiology of the disease. The JBI Critical appraisal tools were used to assess the quality of the studies. Eventually, twenty-eight studies were included in the systematic review. Twenty-one studies investigated DS, while seven studies examined Candida colonization in patients using removable dentures. The results show that the main causes of DS include the type of dentures, continuous wearing of dentures, and the formation of a Candida biofilm, which is facilitated by poor dental hygiene. Additionally, previous studies have pinpointed the significance of the salivary flow, saliva composition, and salivary pH. The findings of the current review indicate that it is crucial to monitor denture wearers for the appearance of DS, especially the patients whose immunity has been impaired due to a systemic condition. Finally, frequent follow-ups should include a clinical examination and microbial swabs of the palatal mucosa and the mucosal surface of the denture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the relationship between oral mucositis (OM) and the salivary microbiome in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients, emphasizing the prevalence of OM and the need for further research. Topics discussed include the impact of conditioning protocols, microbial diversity variations over time, and the absence of a significant association between OM and oral microbiome alterations in HSCT patients.

Simple Summary: Cancer cachexia (CC) is a complex syndrome requiring a multimodal approach. Although a universally accepted definition and staging criteria for cancer cachexia remains elusive, there is general consensus regarding the importance of elements such as weight loss, muscle wasting, and poor appetite. Epidemic trends of obesity and overlapping conditions such as sarcopenia and frailty further complicate CC definition, staging, and relevant outcome measures. Despite progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms of CC, there is no single, consistently effective pharmacotherapy for CC and, unsurprisingly, there are variations among guidelines regarding management. Current pharmacologic research is focused on promising targeted treatments; however, a multimodal approach is likely to be more effective than any single therapeutic agent. This narrative review provides an update on non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment and proposes a theoretical model for management of CC, which includes a multimodal therapeutic approach directed at the various mechanisms contributing to CC. Despite a better understanding of the mechanisms causing cancer cachexia (CC) and development of promising pharmacologic and supportive care interventions, CC persists as an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition. CC contributes to fatigue, poor quality of life, functional impairment, increases treatment related toxicity, and reduces survival. The core elements of CC such as weight loss and poor appetite should be identified early. Currently, addressing contributing conditions (hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, and adrenal insufficiency), managing nutrition impact symptoms leading to decreased oral intake (nausea, constipation, dysgeusia, stomatitis, mucositis, pain, fatigue, depressed mood, or anxiety), and the addition of pharmacologic agents when appropriate (progesterone analog, corticosteroids, and olanzapine) is recommended. In Japan, the clinical practice has changed based on the availability of Anamorelin, a ghrelin receptor agonist that improved lean body mass, weight, and appetite-related quality of life (QoL) compared to a placebo, in phase III trials. Other promising therapeutic agents currently in trials include Espindolol, a non-selective β blocker and a monoclonal antibody to GDF-15. In the future, a single therapeutic agent or perhaps multiple medications targeting the various mechanisms of CC may prove to be an effective strategy. Objective: To investigate the effects of wild-type vesicular stomatitis virus strain (VSV-IN) on immunomodulation and tumour metastasis in mouse triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) 4T1 cell transplantation model mice. Methods: After VSV-IN infected 4T1 cells with MOI=1, MOI=10 and MOI=100 for 12, 24 and 48 h, 4T1 cell mortality was detected by CCK-8 method, migration ability by scratch healing assay, and the expressions of E-cadherin, MMP-2 and MMP-9 mRNA by qPCR. The fat pads of female BALB/c mice were inoculated with 0.1 mL of 4T1 cells with a cell density of 1x106 cells/mL to construct a 4T1 cell-loaded mouse model. When the tumour volume reached 200 mm³, the mice were injected intratumorally with PBS, taxol (TAX) (15 mg/kg), and VSV (1x106 pfu) once a week, respectively. After 4 administrations, mice were executed, stripped of intact grafted tumour tissues, and tumour volume and mass were measured. Histopathological sections of the lungs were stained with H-E, and tumour metastatic nodules of the lungs were observed. The proportion of T-cell subpopulations in the spleen was detected by flow cytometry. The levels of serum IL-6 and TNF-α were detected by ELISA. The expression levels of migration-related proteins in mammary gland tumours were analysed by using the online analysis of GEPIA. The expressions of MMP-2, MMP-9 and E-cadherin in mouse tumours were detected by immunohistochemistry, and the affinity of G and M proteins of VSV-IN and ERK2 and E-cadherin was predicted by protein-protein docking technology. Results: The mortality rate of 4T1 cells after 48 hours of VSV treatment at MOI=10 and 100 were significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.01). Compared with that of the control group, the cell migration rate of the VSV-IN group (MOI=10) was significantly lower (P<0.01), and the relative expression of MMP-9 mRNA was significantly lower (P<0.05). Compared with those in the mice of the control group, transplanted tumours in the mice of the VSV-IN group grew more slowly, and their endpoint volume was significantly reduced (P<0.05). The number of lung metastatic nodules in the mice of the VSV group was significantly less than that of the control group ([12.86±1.86] vs [24±3.67], P<0.01). The proportions of splenic CD4+ T and CD8+ T cells in the VSV group were significantly higher (both P<0.05). The serum TNF-α and IL-6 levels were significantly higher (both P< 0.01). GEPIA tool analysis revealed that the expression levels of E-cadherin and MMP-9 were higher in breast cancer tissues than in paracancerous tissues (P<0.05). The expression of MMP-9 in the tumour cells of the mice in the VSV-IN group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The binding free energies of G and M proteins of VSV-IN to ERK2 were -11.7 kcal/mol and -6.4 kcal/mol, respectively. Conclusion: Wild-type VSV-IN inhibits the growth and metastasis of transplanted tumours in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice, which may be related to its promotion of anti-tumour immunity and modulation of the expression of migration-related proteins. Background: Recurrent oral ulcers are the most common complaint of patients with Behçet’s disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Enhanced innate immune response and neutrophilic activity might be a possible etiopathogenesis of BD. This study aimed to determine the significance of salivary human neutrophil peptide (HNP 1-3) in BD and RAS patients and detect their correlation with different clinical presentations, disease activity, and characteristics of oral ulcers. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 25 BD patients and 25 RAS patients as well as 25 healthy participants. Five cubic centimeters of unstimulated saliva was collected and levels of HNP 1-3 were measured by ELISA. Other data were obtained through interviews, examinations, and reviews of medical records. Finally, data analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0 software. Results: Salivary HNP 1-3 levels were not significantly different between the study groups (P=0.282). Duration of oral ulcers did not correlate with HNP 1-3 levels in RAS and BD patients (P>0.05). Also, BD patients with involvements other than oral ulcers were not found to have different levels of HNP 1-3 compared to those who did not manifest these conditions. Conclusion: The validity of HNP 1-3 to be used as a probable biological marker for evaluation, diagnosis, and estimation of disease activity in patients with BD and RAS is still questionable according to our results. Severe oral stomatitis in patients treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) reduces their quality of life. Here, we investigated the healing effect of rebamipide, a drug used for treatment of gastric ulcers, on the area of acetic acid-induced stomatitis in Golden Syrian hamsters treated and untreated with 5-FU. We attempted to solubilize rebamipide by ternary grinding with rebamipide, polyvinylpyrrolidone K 30 (PVPK-30), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (1:5:1) to obtain a preparation termed GMS. Application of GM5 solution, containing 3.0 mg/mL rebamipide, significantly reduced the area of acetic acid-induced oral stomatitis lesions in 5-FU-untreated animals. It also considerably reduced the lesion area of acetic acid-induced oral stomatitis in 5-FU-treated animals. In 5-FU-treated animals, the time required for 50% reduction in the area of oral stomatitis was significantly shorter in those treated with solubilized rebamipide than in those that were not thus treated (P<0.05). These results suggest that solubilized rebamipide GM5 solution is able to heal acetic acid-induced oral stomatitis in both 5-FU-treated and -untreated animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several interventions have been described for the management of oral mucositis; however, there is a lack of scientific evidence regarding their effectiveness and side effects in pediatric patients. This systematic review aimed to identify therapies for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in children, to assist clinicians in the decision-making process. Low-level laser therapy, palifermin, honey, and zinc demonstrated overall preventive effects on the development of oral mucositis, as well as improvement of symptoms. Children undergoing antineoplastic treatment often present severe side effects due to the dosage and duration of treatments, with oral mucositis emerging as one of the most prevalent and painful inflammatory conditions. There is a growing body of evidence on therapeutic interventions such as cryotherapy, low-level laser therapy, and natural compounds for this condition. The aim of this systematic review was to identify and compare therapies for the management of cancer treatment-induced oral mucositis in pediatric patients. From 2655 articles obtained in initial searches, 39 articles were considered in this systematic review, after applying inclusion/exclusion criteria. Low-level laser therapy, palifermin, honey, and zinc demonstrated reductions in oral mucositis incidence, duration, severity, and pain reported by the patient. Although there are several therapies in place for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in children, evidence of their efficacy is still inconclusive to establish accurate clinical protocols. Background The rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccine (ERVEBO®) is a single-dose, live-attenuated, recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vaccine indicated for the prevention of Ebola virus disease (EVD) caused by Zaire ebolavirus in individuals 12 months of age and older. Methods The Partnership for Research on Ebola VACcination (PREVAC) is a multicenter, phase 2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 3 vaccine strategies in healthy children (ages 1–17) and adults, with projected 5 years of follow-up (NCT02876328). Using validated assays (GP-ELISA and PRNT), we measured antibody responses after 1-dose rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP, 2-dose rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP (given on Day 0 and Day 56), or placebo. Furthermore, we quantified vaccine virus shedding in a subset of children's saliva using RT-PCR. Results In total, 819 children and 783 adults were randomized to receive rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP (1 or 2 doses) or placebo. A single dose of rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP increased antibody responses by Day 28 that were sustained through Month 12. A second dose of rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP given on Day 56 transiently boosted antibody concentrations. In vaccinated children, GP-ELISA titers were superior to placebo and non-inferior to vaccinated adults. Vaccine virus shedding was observed in 31.7% of children, peaking by Day 7, with no shedding observed after Day 28 post-dose 1 or any time post-dose 2. Conclusions A single dose of rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP induced robust antibody responses in children that was non-inferior to the responses induced in vaccinated adults. Vaccine virus shedding in children was time-limited and only observed after the first dose. Overall, these data support the use of rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP for the prevention of EVD in at-risk children. Introduction: Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is the most malignant form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with short survival without treatment. All trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is a vitamin A metabolite and plays an important role in the treatment of APL. Hypercalcemia is a rare side effect of ATRA. Case Report: A 67-year-old female patient was investigated due to widespread bruising and pancytopenia. The patient was diagnosed with APL and remission was achieved by administering idarubicin together with ATRA in the induction treatment. The patient has hypocalcemia due to acquired hypoparathyroidism, and it was observed that the calcium level increased with the initiation of fluconazole 200 mg/day for antifungal prophylaxis together with ATRA in the consolidation treatment. It was observed that the calcium value reached 13 mg/dL by increasing the fluconazole to 400 mg/day treatment dose due to oral mucositis. Management and Outcome: The development of hypercalcemia has been reported in previous case reports when ATRA is used together with voriconazole, fosfluconazole, itraconazole, and posaconazole, which inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes. In this case, it is the first in the literature that a patient with hypocalcemia due to acquired hypoparathyroidism developed hypercalcemia after fluconazole and ATRA were used together. Discussion: Since hypercalcemia may develop while azole drugs are administered during ATRA treatment, it is important to monitor calcium levels to prevent complications of hypercalcemia. Background/Objectives: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal lesions and a very debilitating lesion, especially in paediatric and adolescent patients. The current pharmacotherapy offers a pain relief but not without side effects, and therefore photobiomodulation (PBM) can be an alternative therapy. To the authors' best knowledge, no published study has explored the efficacy of λ 980 nm laser PBM in the management of all RAS subtypes in paediatric and adolescent patients, and therefore, this prospective observational clinical study was conducted to bridge this gap by evaluating λ 980 nm laser PBM efficacy in symptomatic RAS management in paediatric and adolescent patients. The objectives were to evaluate (1) pain intensity alleviation; (2) wound healing rate; (3) wound size closure; (4) a complete resolution; (5) evidence of recurrence; and (6) patients' treatment satisfaction. Methods: The study's variables were assessed at the following timepoints: T0: pre-treatment; T1: immediately after first PBM session; T2: 5 hours (h) post first PBM session (via telephone call); T3: immediately after second PBM session (three days post first PBM session); T4: three-day follow-up (after complete PBM treatments); T5: two-week follow-up; and T6: three-month follow-up. The following PBM dosimetry and treatment protocols were employed: λ 980 nm; 300 mW; 60 s; 18 J; CW; flattop beam profile of 1 cm2 spot size; 18 J/cm2; and twice-a-week irradiation (72 h interval). Results: At T1, significant immediate pain intensity relief was reported. 33.33% recorded "4" and 66.67% reported "5" on the quantitative numeric pain intensity scale (NPIS), and this continued to improve significantly (83.33%) at T2. All the subjects reported "0" on the NPIS at T3, T4, T5 and T6. There was a significant reduction in the lesion surface area (>50% complete healing) at T3 compared to T0. Complete healing (100%) with no evidence of scarring and lesion recurrence observed at T4, T5 and T6. Very good patients' satisfaction was reported at all timepoints. Conclusions: This is the first report demonstrating λ980 nm efficacy in all RAS subtype management in paediatric and adolescent patients with a 3-month follow-up, whereby its PBM dosimetry and treatment protocols were effective from scientific and practical standpoints, and hence multicentre RCTs with large data are warranted to validate its reproducibility and to enrich the knowledge of PBM application in all RAS subtypes. Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is a condition characterized by the development of ulcers and lesions, in the mouth. It affects a wide portion of the population ranging from 5% to 25%. RAS more commonly affects labial mucosa, buccal mucosa, and tongue. Managing RAS involves treatment approaches that can be applied directly to the affected area as well as can be administered internally. Topical therapies involve using anesthetics, corticosteroids, and anti-inflammatory agents to alleviate symptoms. Systemic options include medications like colchicine, dapsone, clofazimine, levamisole, thalidomide and zinc supplements. However, for managing RAS no standardized and curative treatments are available. Thus, the objective of any treatment should be to lessen pain, reduce the duration of ulcers, and inhibit recurrence. Also, this work enlists various cells, receptors and pathways which need to be considered while developing an efficient therapy for RAS. Furthermore, herbal remedies can be beneficial in managing RAS without many side effects as in the case of some synthetic drugs. Some herbal treatments that have shown promise include Punica granatum var. pleniflora, Curcuma longa (turmeric), Hangeshinto and many more are reviewed in this work which will be a promising herbal drug to develop polyherbal dosage form for the same. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disease of the mouth. It is characterised by the appearance of painful ulcers in the oral mucosa. RAS is believed to be a multifactorial disease with genetic predisposition, environmental factors and alterations in the immune system. Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance between free radicals and the antioxidant system, also appears to be involved in the pathogenesis of RAS. Several risk factors, such as smoking, iron and vitamin deficiency and anxiety, may contribute to the development of the disease. Understanding the underlying mechanisms may help in the prevention and treatment of RAS. We searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases for articles on oxidative stress in patients with RAS from 2000 to 2023. Studies analysing oxidant and antioxidant levels in the blood and saliva of RAS patients and healthy controls were selected. Of 170 potentially eligible articles, 24 met the inclusion criteria: 11 studies on blood samples, 6 on salivary samples and 7 on both blood and salivary samples. Multiple oxidative and antioxidant markers were assessed in blood and saliva samples. Overall, statistically significant differences were found between RAS patients and healthy controls for most markers. In addition, increased oxidative DNA damage was observed in patients with RAS. Patients with RAS show elevated levels of oxidative stress compared to healthy controls, with a significant increase in oxidative markers and a significant decrease in antioxidant defences in saliva and blood samples. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the oral health status among allogeneic transplant recipients who were seen in a multidisciplinary graft‐versus‐host disease paediatric clinic at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent allogeneic transplants and were seen in the graft‐versus‐host disease paediatric clinic between January 2010 and September 2021. Demographic, medical and oral health data were recorded and analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 25 patients were seen in the paediatric graft‐versus‐host disease clinic (68% males) with a median age of 12 years at the time of transplant were included. Among them, 12 patients (48%) were diagnosed with oral chronic GVHD, 11 (44%) with dry mouth, four (16%) with oral pseudomembranous candidiasis, one (4%) with recrudescent Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection and one (4%) with mammalian target of rapamycin‐inhibitor stomatitis and were managed by the oral medicine team, accordingly with medications, such as topical steroids (44%) and anti‐fungal (20%). Conclusions: HSCT recipients may present with a variety of oral complications. Patients may benefit by a multi‐disciplinary approach including a dental specialist as part of the cancer care team. Simple Summary: Patients with head and neck cancer undergoing curative treatment with radiation therapy and chemotherapy often experience sleep disturbances that can affect pain and quality of life. We prospectively studied this patient population using sleep symptom questionnaires to assess the impact of sleep disturbances on patient-reported outcomes. We found that at baseline, 39% of patients had subthreshold or greater insomnia and 54% screened positive for OSA. Upon completion of radiation therapy, patients with these sleep disturbances had worse patient-reported quality of life and oral mucositis pain. These findings highlight the importance of managing sleep disturbances as a potential method to improve patient-reported outcomes for patients undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Background: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiation therapy (RT) often experience sleep disturbances that may contribute to oral mucositis (OM) and quality of life (QOL). Methods: Patients with HNC treated with RT at a single institution were examined. Sleep questionnaires were given on the first day of RT to assess for insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Patient-reported QOL and oral mucositis were assessed during RT. Associations between insomnia and OSA with QOL were assessed using the Mann–Whitney U test. Linear mixed models assessed associations with OM. Results: Among 87 patients, 34 patients (39%) had subthreshold or greater insomnia and 47 patients (54%) screened positive for OSA. Upon RT completion, patients with subthreshold or greater insomnia had worse physical function (p = 0.005), fatigue (p = 0.01), insomnia (p < 0.001), and sticky saliva (p = 0.002). Patients screening positive for OSA had worse physical function (p = 0.01), sticky saliva (p = 0.02), fatigue (p = 0.007), insomnia (p = 0.009), and pain (p = 0.005). Upon linear mixed model evaluation, subthreshold or greater insomnia (p = 0.01) and positive OSA screen (p = 0.002) were associated with worse OM. One of the actual problems of modern orthopedic dentistry is the development of optimal materials that, by their physical and chemical properties, would be most biocompatible with the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. The purpose of this work was to substantiate the use of base materials and acrylates for the manufacture of removable prostheses and to increase the effectiveness of orthopedic treatment of patients with complete or partial absence of teeth basing on the review of literary sources. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Google Scholar from 2019 to January 2024. There was no restriction on the date of publication or language. Searches were conducted according to MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) using the following search terms: "removable prosthetics", "removable prostheses", "dental base materials", "acrylates", "materials science", "adaptation". A total of 82 sources of literature were selected and processed during the primary analysis. After systematization of the selected information using general scientific methods, 70 most relevant sources remained. Exclusion criteria: publications that did not meet the purpose of this review, publication language other than English and Ukrainian. Used methods: bibliographic and analytical. The relation between the properties of the materials from which the prosthesis is made and the mucous membrane of the prosthetic bed was revealed, and the direct dependence of the quality of the prosthesis, the period of wearing, and the level of oral hygiene was determined. The base material must be easy to use so that the prosthesis can be manufactured and repaired without the use of a significant number of technological processes and equipment. The most common and popular material for manufacturing the bases of partial and complete removable prostheses are acrylates due to their low cost and the simplicity of the application technology, which does not require expensive equipment. The analysis of these literature sources showed that the percentage ratio of the composition of removable prostheses, which includes acrylic plastic, is more than 80%. However, except all existing advantages, they have a number of disadvantages. The main unsatisfactory quality of acrylic prostheses is their negative impact on the tissues of the prosthetic bed, which is reflected in the sensitivity of the mucous membrane and the phenomena of inflammation. Most often, this is manifested as a result of the reproduction of pathogenic microflora, which is concentrated on the surface of the base of the prosthesis. It is worth remembering that removable prostheses are inherently combined irritants that have a whole set of negative effects on the mucous membrane of the prosthetic bed, leading to its chronic inflammation. The above-described negative properties of acrylic plastic became the impetus for the creation of other types of materials. This problem is extremely urgent, and despite the serious resources spent on its elimination, so far no optimal way to increase not only the functionality and durability of the service, but also the safety of using removable orthopedic constructions has been found. Objective: To study the efficacy of PADTM Plus-based photoactivated disinfection (PAD) for treating denture stomatitis (DS) in diabetic rats by establishing a diabetic rat DS model. Methods: The diabetic rat DS model was developed by randomly selecting 2-monthold male Sprague-Dawley rats and dividing them into four groups. The palate and denture surfaces of rats in the PAD groups were incubated with 1 mg/mL toluidine blue O for 1 min each, followed by a 1-min exposure to 750-mW light-emitting diode light. The PAD-1 group received one radiation treatment, and the PAD-2 group received three radiation treatments over 5 days with a 1-day interval. The nystatin (NYS) group received treatment for 5 days with a suspension of NYS of 100,000 IU. The infection group did not receive any treatment. In each group, assessments included an inflammation score of the palate, tests for fungal load, histological evaluation, and immunohistochemical detection of interleukin-17 (IL-17) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) conducted 1 and 7 days following the conclusion of treatment. Results: One day after treatment, the fungal load on the palate and dentures, as well as the mean optical density values of IL-17 and TNF-α, were found to be greater in the infection group than in the other three treatment groups (P < 0.05). On the 7th day after treatment, these values were significantly higher in the infection group than in the PAD-2 and NYS groups (P < 0.05). Importantly, there were no differences between the infection and PAD-1 groups nor between the PAD-2 and NYS groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions: PAD effectively reduced the fungal load and the expressions of IL-17 and TNF-a in the palate and denture of diabetic DS rats. This article describes a case of breast cancer post-surgery. During the outpatient chemotherapy, oral mucositis and hair loss caused by chemotherapy drugs led to anxiety, which led to the motivation of nursing care. During the nursing period from February 1st to April 30th, 2021, data were collected through direct nursing, observation, interview, medical record review and social software interaction. The evaluation was based on physical, psychological, social, spiritual levels and combined with human figure drawing evaluation. Analysis established health problems as anxiety, oral mucositis and physical and mental image disorders. The intervention included: using Swanson's caring theory to establish a good relationship between nurses and patients; taking the initiative to care and accompany patients; encourage joint participation in care plans; teach stress relief, oral care and methods to cope with hair loss and appearance changes; introduce cases to share experiences; strengthen positive attitudes and self-confidence, and successfully complete chemotherapy. It is hoped that the human figure drawing evaluation approach will be promoted to the cross-team discussion in the hospital, so as to quickly grasp the patient's problems, enhance the nursing consensus, and promote the nursing results into the family-centered nursing model, so as to improve the quality and effectiveness of nursing.
