Despite the growth of the sport-for-development and peace (SDP) field, the sector remains heavily resource-constrained whereby organizations have limited resources but also operate in resource-scarce environments. Given this, we draw on the theoretical concept of bricolage to explore how such resource constraints are overcome. In this study, an organization implementing SDP for refugees and throughout their existence have been confronted with resource constraints is examined. Across the organization's start-up phase and growth stage, multiple forms of bricolage are identified, which enabled the organization to address the social needs of refugees through SDP. We discuss these findings in relation to existing literature on bricolage as well as social entrepreneurship in SDP, emphasizing the way in which the recombination of resources offers opportunities for organizations and practitioners to effectively manage a scarce resource base. In recent years, magnetic skyrmion-based spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) have attracted considerable interest for their prospect in future-generation communication and spintronic technologies. However, some critical issues, which hamper their practical applications, e.g., the long start-up time and variable skyrmion gyration orbit, remain to be resolved. Here, we numerically demonstrate the realization of a fixed-orbit STNO, which is based on an interlayer-coupled meron–skyrmion (MS) pair instead of a magnetic skyrmion. In this STNO, the MS pair possesses a structurally defined, fixed orbit within a broad range of driving currents, even in the presence of random defects. The output frequency range of the STNO based on an MS pair far exceeds that of the STNO typically featuring a single skyrmion. Moreover, the output frequency of this STNO can be further elevated if more MS pairs are incorporated. Our results reveal the nontrivial dynamics of the interlayer-coupled MS pair, opening perspectives for the design and optimization of fundamental spintronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Economic crises have profound effects on societies, motivating many individuals to launch their own firms in order to make a living. Although these firms created "out of necessity" possess few resources besides their founder's human capital, the role that this critical endowment plays in establishing a successful firm during a crisis is unclear, as existing knowledge offers diverging predictions about the value of general and specific human capital. We argue that this debate remains unresolved because we lack a holistic understanding of how each human capital type influences performance when founding conditions vary, and aim to reconcile the contrasting claims by considering how "hard" a crisis hits a given industry. Analyzing data collected from 500 founders who created firms in Greece during the Great Recession, combined with data from the Greek Statistical Office, we find that general human capital provides the greatest benefits, on average, during a crisis; yet specific human capital is more valuable in both the most favorable and the most unfavorable industry contexts. These results reveal how the value of human capital in entrepreneurship is contingent on founding conditions, and call into question existing notions of what it means to be resilient in a crisis. To hedge unforeseen risk, investors may prioritize male-led ventures that they anticipate most other investors will prefer, arriving at decisions that are biased against women. Yet, little is known about how investors infer such gendered preferences and when they are particularly likely to do so. Integrating insights from third-party bias research with social role theory, we posit that when women propose novel ventures, investors are more apt to make unpromising social approval forecasting—an anticipation of the extent to which other investors will endorse these ventures—and thus withhold funding support. This is because the intensified gender role violations due to women being entrepreneurial in tandem with being novel lead investors to impose harsher judgments that these ventures violate normative business practices. Our hypotheses receive support from results of three methodologically complementary studies, including an archival study of Shark Tank (2009–2019) coupled with preregistered online and field experiments. By casting light on how venture novelty, a key determining factor of entrepreneurial success, makes third-party bias against women particularly salient, our work identifies a less overt "entrepreneurial gender dilemma" and derives new insights into policy-making designed to help women entrepreneurs surmount financial and social barriers in the innovation-based economy. Interorganizational partnerships can spur innovation, but their value may be diminished by friction in knowledge flows between firms. We consider how a partner's organizational structure may influence the knowledge that is accessible via partnerships. We focus on how a partner's structure trades off localized autonomy for its managers, which facilitates timelier decision making, and unified control, which facilitates integration. By shaping this balance, centralization of decision rights within the partner organization shapes access to its knowledge. Centralized structures generate wide-ranging internal knowledge pathways that enable access to a broader array of a partner's knowledge. However, the reduced managerial autonomy afforded by centralization makes decision making more cumbersome, which constricts the rate of access to a partner's knowledge. We find evidence of this tradeoff in the context of corporate venture capital relationships between incumbents and startups in the pharmaceutical industry. An increase in the incumbent's diversity of knowledge or in the knowledge required by the startup enhances the value of a greater breadth of access, whereas the degree to which the startup can leverage social ties (affinity) or hierarchical fiat (authority) alleviates the costs of a reduced access rate. Each of these features makes an incumbent organization's centralization more valuable to the startup. By highlighting this tension related to centralization, our findings suggest that new firms striving to maximize their partnership benefits may need to carefully consider their partners' internal structures. Startup accelerators, which aim to improve the set of choices representing a startup's entry strategy, have become increasingly influential in both regional development and the strategies of individual startups. This article explores an accelerator's impact on startup performance and whether that impact varies substantially by features of the startup's founding environment. Leveraging data from a leading startup accelerator, I use a regression discontinuity framework to hold startup quality constant so that I can compare the performance of admitted startups to those that do not make the cut, and I examine whether any observed performance differentials are driven by accelerator admission and by characteristics of the startup's earlier environment. I find evidence that startups from better pre-accelerator environments experience stronger gains from accelerator admission. I also find evidence of home bias, as local startups have a stronger treatment effect. These results provide evidence of ecosystem effects whereby the impact of one organizational sponsor in an ecosystem is strongly moderated by other features in the ecosystem. The findings help to explain the concentration of accelerator programs in already successful entrepreneurial ecosystems and reveal how such programs may interact with founding environments to complement resource abundance or magnify prior resource inequalities. Using proprietary data from AngelList Talent, we study how startup job seekers' search and application behavior changed during the COVID-19 downturn. We find that workers shifted their searches and applications away from less-established startups and toward more-established ones, even within the same individual over time. At the firm level, this shift was not offset by an influx of new job seekers. Less-established startups experienced a relative decline in the quantity and quality of applications, ultimately affecting their hiring. We exploit the staggered introduction of liability waivers when investors hold stakes in conflicting business opportunities as a shock to venture capital (VC) investment and director networks. After the law changes, we find increases in within-industry VC investment and common directors serving on startup boards. Despite the potential for rent extraction, same-industry startups inside VC portfolios benefit by raising more capital, failing less, and exiting more successfully. VC directors serving on other startup boards are the primary mechanism associated with positive outcomes, consistent with common VC investment facilitating informational exchanges in VC portfolios. While much of the academic literature on spinouts focuses on new ventures launched by the ex-employees of incumbent firms within the same industry, recent research shows that spinouts may also enter a focal industry from "knowledge contexts" outside of the incumbent industry. In particular, recent studies show that spinouts may enter from both upstream and downstream industries related to a focal industry along the value chain. Such spinouts have been called user-industry and supplier-industry spinouts. In this article, evidence from existing studies is collected to provide an indication of the relevance of such spinouts across various industries. This survey also includes an analysis of industry studies in which user- and supplier-industry spinouts may have been present but were not identified as such by scholars due to a difference in focus. The paper then considers the evidence accumulated to date in order to explore the industry contexts in which these two types of spinouts appear and to develop propositions concerning differences in the entry timing and product/market strategies of these startups. Scholars have long been interested in understanding how a firm's "pre-history" shapes its behavior and performance, with recent scholarship highlighting the fact that industry entrants stem from different knowledge sources. Knowledge sources, the context in which entrants develop the knowledge they bring as they enter an industry, are argued to be important, because they may have differential effects on firm strategy and performance. We explore the effects of five different knowledge sources on firm behavior and survival using a mixed-methods approach. Survival analysis shows that user-founded new ventures outsurvive academic-founded new ventures, employee-founded new ventures, related diversifying entrants, and unrelated diversifying entrants. Qualitative analysis suggests that user-founded new ventures often enter niche markets defined by the clinical expertise of their founders and remain in these markets over time, honing their product offerings to specific clinical needs. Our analyses are based on novel, hand-collected archival data on the population of entrants in the modern medical imaging industry. How much should an entrepreneur experiment and when should they pivot? Do the answers to these questions change if the entrepreneur is subject to behavioral biases, such as overconfidence? In this paper, we develop a conceptual logic to address these questions. We focus on the design of a "program of experimentation," which we define as a sequentially interdependent set of experiments and pivot decisions an entrepreneur undertakes to develop a viable business idea. This conceptualization highlights two dimensions of program design: the number of experiments to run and the pivot threshold for evaluating experimental outcomes. Our computational model suggests that while experimenting and pivoting can improve new venture performance, it can also be taken too far. Programs of experimentation that generate frequent and early pivots may impede learning and underperform more conservative programs that generate fewer pivots. We also show that an effectively designed program of experimentation can partially remedy an entrepreneur's behavioral biases. Our work informs ongoing scholarly efforts to more fully understand the Lean Startup's strengths and limitations and advances the theoretical apparatus underlying a scientific approach to venturing. This paper examines how labor mobility restrictions like noncompete agreements affect firms' investment decisions. Using matched employee-employer data from LinkedIn, I show that increases in the enforceability of noncompete agreements lead to widespread declines in employee departures, specifically in knowledge-intensive occupations. Established firms that rely more on these knowledge-intensive occupations increase their investment rate in physical capital. However, new firm entry in corresponding sectors declines. I provide evidence for different mechanisms to explain these patterns. Together, the findings show that labor frictions play an important role in investment decisions. Research on entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) has tended to focus on the role that characteristics internal to the EE play in determining EE-level outcomes. Notwithstanding the insights that academics, policy-makers, and entrepreneurs have gleaned from these studies, prior research has yet to explain whether, how, and why these outcomes might also be impacted by an EE's position within the larger network of EEs. Given broad acceptance for the important role that networks play in facilitating entrepreneurship at the firm level, we contend that adopting a network-based view of EEs may also help predict and explain aggregate entrepreneurial outcomes at the EE level. Specifically, we adopt a double embeddedness lens to examine the impact of both inter-EE (i.e., structural embeddedness) and intra-EE (i.e., cultural embeddedness) factors on EE-level new venture creation. Using a longitudinal sample of regional data in the United States from 1994 to 2016, we develop and test hypotheses where the relationship between structural embeddedness and new venture creation follows an inverted "U" shape that is itself moderated by cultural embeddedness. Does proprietary knowledge protection (PKP) spur or hinder the product-market performance of new firms? Exploiting the staggered adoptions of the inevitable disclosure doctrine by U.S. State Courts, which enhance PKP, we show that treated firms increase industry-adjusted sales growth by 2% compared to control firms. The effect is concentrated among small and young firms and increases with the scope of proprietary knowledge and rivals' access to external finance. PKP encourages firms to develop new products and stimulates initial public offering activity. Our results suggest that PKP alleviates predation risk associated with "deep-pocket" rivals by allowing firms to maintain competitive advantages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article studies how changes in investor protection regulations affect local entrepreneurial activity, relying on the heterogeneous impact of a 2011 SEC regulation change on the definition of accredited investors across U.S. cities. Using a difference-in-differences approach, I show that cities more affected by the regulation change experienced a significantly larger decrease in local angel financing, entrepreneurial activity, innovation output, employment, and sales. I find that small business loans and second-lien mortgages became entrepreneurs' partial substitutes for angel investment. My cost-benefit analysis suggests that the costs of protecting angel investors through the 2011 regulation change outweigh its benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Once scaled, online platforms reconfigure value to remain competitive. Reconfiguration in online platforms may take a different form than in pipelines, as online platforms are intermediaries that generate network effects among the sides they connect. They also face stiff competition from other spheres due to lower barriers to entry. Why and how do online platforms reconfigure value? By examining 13 Indian online platforms that have achieved a certain level of success (such as tipped markets, investor confidence, or profitability), this article offers four strategies for reconfiguring online platforms: enhance interactions, enhance capabilities, offer new services, and nurture new transactions. Women are underrepresented in startups, but research on "joiners"—nonfounder employees attracted to startup work—offers limited explanations for why such underrepresentation occurs and how it persists. We argue that, even among joiners, women are less interested than men in applying for startup jobs and that this gender gap is associated with differential reactions to information about the gender composition of prospective employers. We analyze unique field data obtained from a job-matching mobile-application platform for startups, finding the hypothesized gender gap and showing that women, but not men, are sensitive to information about organizational gender composition, especially for startups signaling "diversity debt"—that is, no or only a token representation of women. A preregistered experiment further reveals that women's identity threat concerns mediate these effects. Gender disparities in startups are reproduced in a vicious cycle as existing underrepresentation deters women from applying. Our findings have implications for research and practice concerning joiners, the underrepresentation of women in entrepreneurship, and startups' ability to shape the gender composition of their applicant pools. Mobile platforms provide important entrepreneurial opportunities by facilitating access to a global market composed of more than a hundred countries. These opportunities are crucial for mobile app startups as they seek to reach a wider audience and accelerate growth. Nevertheless, performing in foreign countries is challenging as mobile app startups face a "foreignness liability" since they are competing against complementors (i.e., app developers) who have experience in their domestic market. We offer a research model that assesses the impact of cultural distance on the app-level performance of mobile app startups in foreign countries. We hypothesize the moderating effects of investor-consumer cultural distance and environmental characteristics within foreign countries. We test the model using a dataset of over 550 mobile app startups operating on the iOS platform. Our findings support our hypotheses and provide insights into whether mobile platforms are level playing fields. Our study sheds light on the interactions between a startup and its investors' cultural distances highlighting configurations of cultural distance that are beneficial for app performance in foreign countries when the environment is stable or uncertain. The dual compensation chamber loop heat pipe (DCCLHP) technology shows great promise for efficient thermal management in a variety of applications. This study focuses on refining the startup performance of the DCCLHP, particularly for low heat load conditions in terrestrial settings, by utilizing dual bayonet tubes. Empirical investigations examined the DCCLHP's operational characteristics and improved thermal transfer capabilities across different orientations of the evaporator and compensation chamber (CC), including vertical, 45‐degree tilt angle, and horizontal configurations. Key results demonstrate the DCCLHP's ability to manage low heat loads across diverse orientations, achieving over 400 W of heat transfer across a distance of 2.0 m while maintaining stable operation. Notably, the DCCLHP operation did not exhibit any significant instability issues. This work enhances the startup performance of the DCCLHP in various orientations and provides valuable insights into the confined natural circulation phenomenon, crucial for improving the overall thermal management capabilities of the system. This paper investigates the impact of online interaction between investors and enterprises on stock liquidity, using data from A-share listed companies in China from 2010 to 2021. Firstly, our findings reveal that more frequent interaction leads to better stock liquidity, and this result remains consistent across various robustness tests. Secondly, we observe that the expected tenure of senior executives and the ratio of institutional investor ownership exert a significant moderating effect on this relationship. Thirdly, this effect varies across enterprises at different development stages and with different ownership structures, being more pronounced in growing and privately-owned companies. Furthermore, this paper finds an inverted U-shaped relationship between reply length and stock liquidity, indicating that excessively long replies may introduce noise and negatively affect liquidity. This paper explores the effectiveness of regional intervention strategies aimed at enhancing 'low-tech' SMEs' sustainable competitive advantage and innovation activities, employing the food sector in Wales (UK) as a case study. It utilizes the triple helix model to analyse these interventions, emphasising collaboration between government, academia, and industry to stimulate knowledge-based economic development. The food sector represents an ideal subject for innovation-focused regional development policies because of its global importance, sustainability concerns, health impact and economic outcomes. A mixed-methods longitudinal case study approach was taken, evaluating a series of intervention programmes over an extended period (12 years in total), all funded by the European Union via the Welsh Government. Data sources included program reports, management committee reports, interviews, and case study testimonials. Frequent intervention activities included quality systems development, technical support, and skills training. They notably improved product and processing innovation for SMEs, key performance indicators revealing over 1,800 new products, safeguarding around 2,300 food sector jobs, and supporting 64 new business start-ups. Findings emphasized the value of consistent policies over an extended time period, albeit with the potential for lock-in effects. Future programme goals should be adapted for broader sustainable development outcomes – these are not uniquely Welsh challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generally, marine reclamation land needs to be improved by a large margin before the construction of civil structures in coastland due to poor geotechnical properties of the dredged slurry. The combination of vacuum preloading (VP) and dynamic consolidation (DC) has been developed for application in such projects. However, the effect of the combined VP and DC method is mainly controlled by the start-up time of DC (time of first tamping); in this study, the start-up time was determined by the degree of consolidation (DOC), and the DOC under VP was estimated by pore water pressure (PWP). According to a series of previously studied laboratory test results, the DC can be applied when DOC is greater than or equal to 60%. Thus, DOCs of 60%, 65%, 70%, and 75% were considered as the judgment index of start-up time. During the model tests, the settlement and PWP were monitored and measured. The water content and vane shear strength of the dredged slurry were also measured after the completion of tests. The start-up time of DC was determined when an optimal DOC was 70%. This article describes an emergent innovation ecosystem in the southern Indian state of Kerala. In contrast to a dominant national imagination of start-ups in India as spaces for the development of novel products with high economic potential, we suggest that start-ups in Kerala exhibit a tendency towards 'social innovation', that is, start-ups that are strongly oriented by the goal of addressing particular societal needs in addition to being successful on the market. Drawing on ethnographic interviews with start-up founders and other related stakeholders, as well as media and documentary analysis, we highlight in this essay key characteristics of social innovation in Kerala, including their reliance on tech-fix approaches. We also highlight the central role of the Kerala Start-up Mission (KSUM), a state-sponsored nodal agency, as a crucial enabler and shaper of the state's innovation ecosystem. We further suggest that even as this innovation ecosystem is able to address important societal concerns, it nonetheless bypasses underlying social structures that produce them in the first place. Building on the work of sociologist Cornelius Schubert, we argue that it is analytically productive to interpret social innovation in Kerala as an instance of 'disruptive maintenance'. This research note critically extends Audretsch and Moog's work on the relationship between democracy and entrepreneurship. While Audretsch and Moog present a positive relationship between democracy and entrepreneurship, we find that key measures of entrepreneurship are frequently negatively, not positively, associated with democracy and its various determinants. However, we do find some evidence to support Audretsch and Moog's theorizing that democracy is learned in start-ups and small businesses by showing that entrepreneurs in advanced economies are more democratic in their attitudes or behaviors than their employee counterparts. But the evidence on whether the transition from regular employment to entrepreneurship increases political engagement and democratic orientation remains inconclusive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research Summary: Scaling at the right time is a crucial challenge for startups. Conceptualizing "scaling" as the entrepreneurial process of acquiring and committing resources to implement the core business idea and expand the customer base, this study examines how scaling early may decrease imitation risk at the expense of increasing commitment risk. As startups typically hire managers and sales personnel when they begin to scale, we propose that this timing can be empirically measured by when startups first post these jobs. Leveraging a dataset of job postings, we find that early scalers are more likely to fail, but no evidence of a countervailing benefit in terms of successful exit. Additional analyses suggest that the commitment risk in scaling early outweighs the benefit of reducing imitation risk. Managerial Summary: In recent years, a few high‐growth startups (e.g., Facebook and Uber) that made their fortune by scaling early—an approach often referred to as "blitzscaling"—have received much interest among academics and practitioners. However, this study presents large‐sample evidence that scaling early is positively associated with a higher rate of firm failure, especially for platform companies. These findings imply that, despite its potential benefits of preventing imitation by competitors, scaling early can suppress startup performance by prematurely curtailing learning through experimentation and committing to a business idea that lacks product‐market fit. In sum, our work cautions startups against prioritizing scaling early before finding product‐market fit, and instead highlights the importance of spending sufficient time on experimentation before scaling. We build on dynamic capability (DC) theory and apply inductive case study research to shed light on how new venture manufacturing firms develop and nurture supply chain (SC) capabilities. Our findings discern SC capabilities related to dimensions of DCs (sense, integrate, develop, reconfigure) and show how these SC capabilities evolve throughout new venture life cycle stages. We find that SC capabilities steadily substitute improvisation and imitation. Our study also reveals that SC capabilities serve as dual-purpose capabilities with an operational as well as a dynamic role. On the one hand, they are needed to operate the supply chain and enable the development and reconfiguration of the internal resource base. On the other hand, they allow for the sensing and integration of external resources and create new or update and modify existing SC capabilities. To address challenges such as low starting torque and inaccurate position estimation in traditional sensorless control methods for switched reluctance motors (SRMs), this paper proposes a sensorless control strategy suitable for the startup and low-to-medium speed operation of multiphase SRMs. Firstly, an improved inductance calculation model for the pulse injection region is proposed based on the electromagnetic characteristics of SRM. Secondly, leveraging the results of the inductance model calculation, a three-phase commutation rule is designed to enhance the starting capability. Organization studies has (re)turned to affect, a development that has brought affective tensions—build-ups of energy, or vitalities—to the fore of research. Previous studies on affect in organizations underline the organizational and transformational effects of affective milieus or atmospheres. I contribute to this research with a micro perspective on how affect shapes intersubjective relationships. I do so through an ethnographically inspired study of SusPens, a fin-tech start-up that uses algorithmic tools to screen sustainable investments. In the course of my empirical engagement, I identified recurring tensions in the collaboration between tech professionals and business professionals. I unpack these tensions in three collaborative encounters, focusing on how the algorithm functioned as a common reference point as well as a barrier for the collaboration. To conceptualize the observed tensions, the article builds on Sara Ahmed's concept of objects of emotion and introduces affective boundaries as a theoretical construct for understanding the power effects of affective circulation. The article details how affective boundaries are installed through the affective misalignments that arise as the algorithm circulates as an object of emotion among the team members. The article concludes that the installment of affective boundaries delineates who is included in and who is excluded from the collaboration, pointing to how power works affectively in intersubjective relations, empowering some and disqualifying others. Due to the emergence of the digital economy, traditional corporate entrepreneurship (CE) forms (i.e. corporate incubators, corporate venture capital, and corporate accelerators) have become too heavy and resource-consuming. As such, large corporations need to adopt a lightweight and flexible approach to access startups’ knowledge. Many of them have started outsourcing the CE service, demanding it from specialised service providers. In this study, we document the rise of this new form of CE, i.e. corporate service providers. Building from 25 interviews with managers of Plug and Play and GELLIFY, we analyze how these two types of service providers work concretely. Moreover, we discuss how they differ from traditional CE forms. Drawing on additional 17 interviews with large corporations and startups that have interacted through these service providers, we discuss how corporate service providers differ from previous traditional CE forms in facilitating the adoption of lightweight initiatives among large corporations to access startups’ knowledge. The EU directive on exposure to electromagnetic fields was published in 2004, but due to some problems it was not introduced in the EU countries before 2016. However, still today, many companies are not aware of the legislation and have not taken measures to comply. This could perhaps be due to some of the practical problems they are facing in trying to comply. Here, we address some of these problems, such as showing compliance with the action levels for non-sinusoidal extremely low-frequency magnetic fields, time-averaging for the initial start-up current of handheld machines and time-averaging of radiofrequency fields when measuring plastic welding machines, including the uncertainty in the measurements. Medical start-ups (MedTech) significantly contribute to the development and commercialization of innovative healthcare solutions, driving advancements in technology, enhancing treatment effectiveness, and supporting public health. This study explores the main themes and concepts related to MedTech start-ups, examines the research methods used, and identifies major gaps in the literature. A scoping literature review was performed by searching the Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases for publications from 2012 to 2023, focusing on MedTech start-ups in titles, abstracts, and keywords. References were analyzed using the Bibliometrix package in R, and a coupling network analysis was conducted, visualizing results on a Coupling Map to identify key research themes and gaps. The research identified 480 unique articles on MedTech start-ups. After removing duplicates and following a PRISMA-based assessment, 79 articles were included in the review. The studies predominantly focused on organizations, including start-ups and Venture Capital funds (46%). Most articles (60%) used qualitative methods, 25% employed mixed methods, and 15% used quantitative methods. Geographically, 63% of articles focused on a single country, primarily the USA (35%), followed by Iran, Sweden, Switzerland, China, and Japan (2–4% each). Coupling analysis identified five topic clusters: crowdfunding for medical research, innovation in medical technology, new product development, digital start-ups, and the venture capital industry. This review highlights the significant role of MedTech start-ups in advancing healthcare innovations despite challenges like regulatory hurdles and high capital requirements. The literature emphasizes the importance of collaboration among universities, industry, and government for successful commercialization. The geographic concentration in the USA indicates a need for more inclusive research. A suite of diagnostics used to assess impurity content and dynamics has been updated, upgraded, and installed on the Pegasus-III Experiment. Typical plasma parameters during local helicity injection start-up are τshot ∼ 10 ms, ne ∼ 1 × 1019 m−3, and Te ∼ 50 eV. The deployed diagnostics are compatible with this modest temperature and density regime and provide species identification, source localization, and estimation of radiation losses. Impurity species are determined by recording time-evolving, single line-of-sight spectra at 1.25 kfps using a SPRED (Survey, Poor Resolution, Extended Domain) vacuum ultraviolet spectrometer. SPRED is equipped with 450 g/mm grating, giving a spectral resolution of 0.33 nm and a spectral range from ∼10 to 110 nm, useful to identify light impurity species in this temperature and density range. An absolutely calibrated spectrometer that collects light from the plasma at Rtan = 15.9 cm and Δt ≥ 2 ms is used as a visible survey spectrometer and for continuum measurements. The radiated power from the plasma is estimated with a photodiode-based diagnostic. Two 16-channel absolute extreme ultraviolet diode arrays are placed behind pinhole apertures, resulting in 32 lines of sight at Z = 0, with a spatial resolution of 2–3 cm and a time response of 60 kHz. A photometrically calibrated collinear Dα/near infrared filtered photodiode-based system measures the Dα emission and around 1040 nm. The SPARC tokamak will be equipped with a hard X-ray (HXR) monitor system capable of measuring the bremsstrahlung emission from runaway electrons with photon energies in excess of about 100 keV. This diagnostic will detect the formation of runaway electron beams during plasma start-up and inform the plasma control system to terminate the discharge early to protect the machine. In this work, we present a 0D estimate of the HXR emission in SPARC during plasma start-up. Then we discuss the characterization of a prototype of the HXR monitor. The detector mounts a 1 × 1-in.2 LaBr3 inorganic scintillator coupled with a photomultiplier tube and has been tested with γ-ray sources to find its dynamic range. Various significant features influence the success of a startup in an entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, identification of such features has not been performed coherently. This study aims to bridge the gap by determining the essential features impacting a startup's success. In the first part, a machine learning-based approach is applied empirically to determine critical features from ten datasets. Then the obtained features were validated using popular feature selection techniques based upon Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), SelectKBest, and XGBoost to assure the final significant features. Furthermore, mutual information is used between the features obtained from the proposed approach and the ground truth to measure the approach's efficacy, which is calculated to be 90%. The significant features acquired through this approach imply how the entrepreneurs prioritise the determining features in startup success and maximise the socio-economic outputs. This study provides an essential contribution to the entrepreneurial finance literature by empirically exploring the features influencing a startup's success based on its financial performance in different stages of its lifecycle. Startups can apply the implications of this study to reduce uncertainty and enhance performance. This study serves as a research endeavor aiming to explore the behavior of the coupling flow effects of the single expansion ramp nozzle (SERN) in over-expansion conditions during the static start-up process. The open-source program OpenFOAM and its solver "rhoCentralFoam" are employed in the 2D simulation and the two critical geometric variations, the shape of the ramp and the length of the flap beyond the throat, are considered in the geometric variation. The result shows the preferable propulsion performance in the FSS (Free Shockwave Separation) state compared to RSS (Restricted Shockwave Separation). FSS also plays the role of the initial, albeit transient, separation, which originates from the shockwave from the throat and will eventually transform into a stabler RSS state. For the 100% flap length configuration in this study, the axial thrust can achieve a high value of 500 N/m in the FSS state and decrease to around 450 N/m, on average, in the RSS state. The trust angle also shows a preferable performance of around −13° in FSS compared to −30° in RSS. Regarding geometric modifications, both modifications, shorting the flap and bell-shaped ramp adjustments, manifest similar effects. Both conical and bell-shaped short flap configurations demonstrate an axial thrust from around 1750 to 1900 N/m and a thrust angle of around −45°. However, the flap shortening, which may demonstrate an attitude compensation effect, exhibits a more pronounced effect compared to the bell-shaped modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Startup accelerators have emerged as a prominent mechanism for supporting early-stage ventures, yet questions persist regarding their effectiveness. This study addresses the gap in understanding by investigating whether accelerators promote the growth of all startups or only those already successful. Leveraging web-search traffic data as a proxy for startup growth, trend analysis is used to assess the impact of acceleration. Using a sample of 103 startups from Y Combinator from 2017 and 2018, the analysis reveals that accelerators aid startups regardless of their pre-acceleration growth status (i.e. growing, stagnating or declining). Furthermore, non-growing startups selected for acceleration exhibit better chances of achieving growth post-acceleration compared to already growing counterparts. These findings add important insights into the understanding of accelerators’ effectiveness, demonstrating that accelerators work for all selected startups, not only for those already successful. Our findings offer two important practical implications: policymakers and stakeholders should continue supporting accelerators due to their positive impact on startup growth and reducing uncertainty; startups should focus on their future potential and vision when applying for an acceleration program. Using the introduced approach, future research could compare the effectiveness of accelerators offering offline and online programs, targeting specific industry sectors, and across different periods. Geroscience, or longevity biotechnology, has made impressive advances in recent years that have led to the founding of dozens of start-ups, nonprofits and advocacy organizations, and the formation of a global movement to defeat aging. The community envisions changes at the regulatory and policy levels and calls for increased funding for research. Nevertheless, progress in the field has not been matched by discussions about ethical, legal, and social implications, as longevity advocates assume that seeking to expand lifespan or health span is inherently desirable and permissible. In this article, I make the case for the importance of putting ethics and society back into geroscience, along with three considerations for the longevity community. First, it should seek to understand the needs and attitudes of the public. Second, the community needs to define whether the field is primarily striving for healthy aging (increasing health span) or for extending years of life (lifespan). Third, it needs to define the role of investors and tech millionaires in shaping the field's priorities and direction. Fall prediction using machine learning has become one of the most fruitful and socially relevant applications of computer vision in gerontological research. Since its inception in the early 2000s, this subfield has proliferated into a robust body of research underpinned by various machine learning algorithms (including neural networks, support vector machines, and decision trees) as well as statistical modeling approaches (Markov chains, Gaussian mixture models, and hidden Markov models). Furthermore, some advancements have been translated into commercial and clinical practice, with companies in various stages of development capitalizing on the aging population to develop new commercially available products. Yet despite the marvel of modern machine learning-enabled fall prediction, little research has been conducted to shed light on the security and privacy concerns that such systems pose for older adults. The present study employs an interdisciplinary lens in examining privacy issues associated with machine learning fall prediction and exploring the implications of these models in elderly care and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). Ultimately, a justice-informed set of best practices rooted in social geroscience is suggested to help fall prediction researchers and companies continue to advance the field while preserving elderly privacy and autonomy. Risk is an important factor that hinders entrepreneurial activities, especially for entrepreneurs with high aspirations. This study examines e-government's impact on entrepreneurship from a risk perspective. Based on individual data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, results show that e-government promotes new ventures, especially those with aspirations to grow and innovate, thus enhancing the quantity and quality of entrepreneurship. Furthermore, mechanism analysis reveals that e-government significantly reduces actual risk and fear of failure, suggesting that it creates a stable environment and decreases risk aversion, which encourages starting new ventures and high-quality entrepreneurial activities. E-government reduces entrepreneurial risk by improving country governance in three dimensions: efficiency of public services, regulatory quality, and control of corruption. Besides, e-government has larger effects on enhancing the quality of entrepreneurship in developing economies. Amid the rapid advancement of digital technology, a surge of digital startups has emerged, intensifying competitive pressures that pose significant challenges to the growth and survival of these enterprises in China. This study constructs a theoretical model based on optimal distinction theory and upper echelon theory, incorporating network ambidextrous capabilities (network exploitation and network exploration), routine replication (general routines replication and flexible routines replication), digital leadership, and opportunity iteration. Utilizing data collected from surveys distributed to 372 digital startups in China and employing hierarchical regression analysis, we investigate the impact and scope of network ambidextrous capabilities on opportunity iteration. The results indicate that both network exploitation and network exploration capability positively influence opportunity iteration. General routines replication partially mediates the relationship between network exploitation capability and opportunity iteration, while flexible routines replication partially mediates the relationship between network exploration capability and opportunity iteration. Furthermore, digital leadership positively moderates the mediating effect of general routines replication on the relationship between network exploitation capability and opportunity iteration, as well as the mediating effect of flexible routines replication on the relationship between network exploration capability and opportunity iteration, demonstrating moderated mediation effects. This study enhances the understanding of opportunity iteration and offers new insights and solutions for digital startups to adapt to opportunities in response to environmental changes. How do failure events affect subsequent new venture creation? The existing literature seems to point in two opposing directions. While the information perspective suggests that failure events undermine collective beliefs about market viability, the competition view implies that failures may foster entrepreneurship via easing competition in both factor and product markets. To address this question, we adopt an inductive approach and analyse registry data in Norway. Based on the firm-level microdata, we construct an industry-region-level marketspace to analyse the number of firm failures and new ventures in different markets. Results show that failures of existing firms generally lead to more venture creation in the same market, albeit being contingent on industry features. And such effect is mainly 'pulled' by product market vacuum, rather than 'pushed' by factor abundance. The Covid-19 outbreak in 2019 and beyond severely threatened global supply chains and markets. Firms worldwide saw their operations limited by governmental restrictions, compromising the viability of their business models and challenging previously established assumptions. This situation offered an opportunity to investigate new ventures' processes of business model transformation (or pivoting) during a major crisis. Specifically, adopting a multiple case study design, we investigated how four Italian firms operating throughout the Covid-19 emergency pivoted in response to the crisis. We develop a conceptual model of pivots-as-process that comprises three stages: reaction to shock, response, and retrospection, leading to longer-term strategic reorientation. Our findings suggest that pivots play out across the three distinct layers of enactment, reflection, and awareness. Our study contributes to the ongoing debate on strategic responses to crises, borrowing from the entrepreneurship literature to investigate how pivots can support firms when they are faced with a need for swift responses, while coping with the temporariness that characterizes crisis situations.
