Ferromagnetic resonance is widely acknowledged as a robust tool for characterizing magnetic materials and studying physical phenomena. Low-temperature magnonics has recently garnered substantial attention; however, it lacks convenient methods for acquiring key magnetic material characteristics. In this study, we introduce a rapid and universal method to determine the temperature dependence of magnetic anisotropy constants of (111)-oriented garnet films using ferromagnetic resonance measurements, demonstrated specifically on the bismuth-substituted iron garnet film grown on a diamagnetic substrate. Our observations reveal a competitive interplay of different anisotropy types as temperature decreases. Notably, the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant K u undergoes a sign change from negative to positive around 120 K, while the anisotropy type remains consistent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer promising prospects for applications in magnetic storage and spin field-effect transistors. However, the inherently low Curie temperatures of intrinsic 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor materials pose significant limitations on their practical device applications. An effective approach to achieving room-temperature ferromagnetism involves doping non-magnetic semiconductors with specific magnetic atoms. Here, we present the room-temperature ferromagnetism of chromium (Cr)-doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets synthesized through chemical vapor deposition. The magnetic hysteresis loops, recorded across a temperature span of 10–300 K, underscore the remarkable stability of their magnetic attributes. To gain deeper microscopic insights into the magnetic properties of Cr-doped MoS2, we conducted first-principles calculations, which further validated our experimental findings. This research underscores a promising pathway for the development of 2D ferromagnetic materials with broad application potential in magnetic storage and spin field-effect transistors. Understanding symmetry breaking has led to various intriguing physical mechanisms and their implications for developing technologically important devices. In magnetic materials, broken inversion symmetry with strong spin–orbit coupling gives rise to Dzyaloshinkii–Moriya interaction (DMI), which favors the formation of topological spin textures and is envisioned as information carriers in spintronic devices. In this study, we prepared Gd–Fe thin films of various thicknesses grown by E-beam deposition. We observed the formation of elongated periodic stripe domains with strong magnetic phase contrasts after demagnetization, signifying the development of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Using a well-known analytical domain spacing model, we extracted the DMI value from the stripe domain periodicity combined with magnetometry data. Micromagnetic simulations corroborated the formation of stripe domains based on the analytically estimated DMI values. It is understood that broken inversion symmetry exists between the sublattices of Gd and Fe atoms due to the asymmetric distribution of the elemental content, which gives rise to such a phenomenon. Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) enabled by two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are promising candidates for exploring ultrasensitive detection and magnetostrictive phenomena, thanks to their high mechanical stiffness, high strength, and ultralow mass. The resonance modes of such vibrating membrane NEMS can be probed optically and also manipulated mechanically via electrostatically induced strain. Electrostatic frequency tuning of 2D magnetic NEMS resonators is, thus, an important means of investigating magneto-mechanical coupling mechanisms. Toward realizing magneto-mechanical coupled devices, we build circular drumhead iron phosphorus trisulfide (FePS3) NEMS resonators with different diameters (3–7 μm). Here, we report on experimental demonstration of tunable antiferromagnet FePS3 drumhead resonators with the highest fractional frequency tuning range up to Δf/f0 = 32%. Combining experimental results and analytical modeling of the resonance frequency scaling, we attain quantitative understanding of the elastic behavior of FePS3, including the transition from "membrane" to "plate" regime, with built-in tension (γ) ranging from 0.1 to 2 N/m. This study not only offers methods for investigating mechanical properties of ultrathin membranes of magnetic 2D materials but also provides important guidelines for designing future high-performance magnetic NEMS resonators. The property of directional power absorption from a microwave magnetic field in thin anisotropic magnetic films was demonstrated. They are 2D printed magnetic nanoparticle chains on polyethylene foil (LDPE) made of single-domain Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles with magnetic uniaxial anisotropy. The 2D feature of the magnetic material results from the self-assembling of magnetic nanoparticles into ring-shaped chains during the drying of the magnetic colloid droplet on LDPE. Ferromagnetic resonance experiments on such thin magnetic films showed the possibility of selective dissipation of microwave magnetic field power. The experimental results were supported by computer simulations using Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equations. The study of magnetic interactions is crucial in understanding magnetic materials, where both exchange coupling and dipole interactions significantly affect the magnetic properties of composite materials. Separating and utilizing these two types of interactions have consistently been a research focus. In this study, FINEMET/Fe35Ni65 composite ribbons with varying coating thicknesses were fabricated using magnetron sputtering. Notably, obvious four-peak giant magnetoimpedance profiles can be observed as the Fe35Ni65 film thickness varied from 10 to 50 nm. Additionally, the manifestation of the four-peak profile was attributed to the variation in the magnetic properties in the FINEMET ribbon induced by exchange coupling and dipole interaction. Comprehending the relationship between spin and phonons is essential to regulate the lattice thermal conductivity in 2D magnetic materials. Lattice thermal conductivity is a relevant part to consider in magnetic data storage and the working of spin-based devices. In this article, we examined the origin and effect of spin–phonon coupling (SPC) on the lattice thermal conductivity of pristine CrI 3 monolayer-based Janus monolayers Cr 2 X 3 S 3 (X = Br , I). We find a high SPC in these Janus monolayers due to in-plane Cr–S atomic vibrations. We observe a reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity at Janus monolayer magnetic states (∼ 52.3 % in Cr 2 Br 3 S 3 and ∼ 63.9% in Cr 2 I 3 S 3) compared to its paramagnetic states. The analysis is also conducted to determine which magnetic state has more anharmonicity using potential energy wells. With significant recent progress in the thin film deposition and nanofabrication technology, a number of physical phenomena occur at the interfaces of magnetic thin films, and their heterostructures have been discovered. Consequently, the electric field-induced modulation of those interfacial properties mediated through spin–orbit coupling promises to develop magnetic material based smarter, faster, miniaturized, energy efficient spintronic devices. Among them, the electric field-induced modification of interfacial magnetic anisotropy, popularly termed as voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA), has attracted special attention because of its salient features. This article is devoted to reviewing the recent development of magnonics, which deals with collective precessional motion of ordered magnetic spins, i.e., spin waves (SWs), and skyrmions with chiral spin textures, with VCMA, including the perspectives of this research field. Starting with a broad introduction, the key features of VCMA and its advantages over other electric field-induced methods are highlighted. These are followed by describing the state-of-the-art of VCMA, and various other direct and indirect electric field-induced methods for magnetization reversal; controlling skyrmion dynamics; excitation, manipulation, and channeling of SWs; and tailoring magnonic bands. Magnetically induced heterogeneous catalysis has been attracting attention due to its high energy efficiency and flexibility for dynamic reactor control. Iron wool is a commercial, low-cost, and versatile heating agent, which has been used in several magnetic catalysis studies, but its heating properties have never been investigated. Here, the properties of three types of Fe wool were studied using optical and electronic microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and measurements of both heating power and high-frequency hysteresis loops. The effects of strand width, packing, and magnetic field amplitude and frequency were studied. A maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) around 700 W/g under a rms field of 47.4 mT at 93 kHz was measured for the larger width Fe wool. High-frequency hysteresis loops were used to quantify the contribution of hysteresis losses and eddy currents to total heating. Eddy currents contribute 65%–90% to the global heating depending on the strand width. Coating the wool with SiO2 and Ni has negative effects on the SAR but none on hysteresis losses. It is interpreted as originating from the cut-off of inter-wire eddy currents due to the insulating (SiO2, oxidized Ni) nature of the coating. Last, it was found that adding more Fe wool in a given volume mostly decreases the SAR. This effect could be not only due to the absorption and/or screening of the field by surface strands but also due to magnetic interactions. In this study, the excellent Y2−xNdxFe17 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) magnetic particles were prepared by the reduction–diffusion process. Through the ferromagnetic coupling between light rare earth element Nd and Fe atoms, we effectively modulated the magnetic crystallographic anisotropy of Y2Fe17. As the amount of Nd doping increases, the natural resonance frequency of Y2−xNdxFe17/PU increases to 15.7 GHz, the saturation magnetization increases to 120.43 emu/g, the Curie temperature increases to 390 K, and the average hyperfine field also increases to 22.5 T. Notably, the doping of Nd atoms leads to a slight expansion of the Y2−xNdxFe17 lattice, exhibiting distinct anisotropic characteristics that preferentially develop along the basal plane. The doping of rare earth Nd atoms with strong magnetic crystal anisotropy can not only significantly enhance the easy-plane magnetic crystallographic anisotropy, causing the natural resonance peak to shift toward higher frequencies, but also has important guiding significance for broadening the high-frequency application range of easy-plane rare earth transition metal alloys. This study investigates the effects of Zn substitution on the magnetic properties of ∼5 nm cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (ZnxCo1−xFe2O4, where x = 0, 0.13, 0.34, and 0.55), demonstrating that Zn substitution induces complex changes in spin canting and prompts a redistribution of cations among the sublattices. We reconstructed the magnetic structure of these spinel ferrites by integrating the classical two-sublattice Néel model of ferrimagnetism with the data obtained from 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry. Consequently, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of how Zn substitution tunes the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, offering valuable insights into the development of magnetic materials with tailored properties for various applications. We study the impedance behavior of two ferrofluids, of a similar magnetic material, one constituted by spherical nanoparticles and the other constituted by cubes, both suspended in kerosene. The ferrofluid constituted by cubic nanoparticles has 10% doping of a rare earth ion. The samples were inserted between two parallel disk-like electrodes of area S = 2.3 c m 2 made of surgical steel, separated by d = 127 μ m. The impedance was measured by applying a sinusoidal voltage of amplitude V 0 = 30 mV, from 1 mHz to 100 kHz. To analyze the experimental data, we use a model based on the Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations, with Ohmic boundary conditions. In the analysis, we assume that the ferrofluids contain free ions, originated from the manufacturing process, released by the stabilization layer around the magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in kerosene. The corresponding nanoparticles are charged of opposite signs with respect to these free ions. In the high frequency region, the effective diffusion coefficient coincides with that from the free diffusion coefficients, defined as the mathematical average between the diffusion coefficients of the nanoparticles and the free ions. In the low frequency region, we found the ambipolar diffusion coefficient, defined as their harmonic average. The effect of the electrodes is taken into account by means of surface conductivity to describe the conduction current across the electrode, assumed to be proportional to the surface electric field. In this model, the role of the electrodes is important just in the low frequency region. On the contrary, in the high frequency region, where the electric current is dominated by the displacement current, the role of the electrodes is negligible. The results show that the nanoparticles of the magnetic material have no effects on the higher-frequency range of the impedance spectra. In the low frequency region, our results indicate a difference in the electric response of the two ferrofluids. Due to their similar dimensions and, hence, similar ambipolar diffusion coefficients, we impute the observed different behavior to the charge transfer from the bulk to the external circuit included in the surface conductivity. Controlling magnon transport processes is critical for developing innovative magnonic devices used in data processing and thermal management applications in microelectronics. The spin ladder compound S r 14 C u 24 O 41 with large magnon thermal conductivity offers a valuable platform for investigating magnon transport. However, there are limited studies on enhancing its magnon thermal conductivity. Herein, we report the modification of magnon thermal transport through partial substitution of strontium with yttrium (Y) in both polycrystalline and single crystalline S r 14 − x Y x C u 24 O 41. At room temperature, the lightly Y-doped polycrystalline sample exhibits 430% enhancement in thermal conductivity compared to the undoped sample. This large enhancement can be attributed to reduced magnon-hole scattering, as confirmed by the Seebeck coefficient measurement. Further increasing the doping level results in negligible change and eventually suppression of magnon thermal transport due to increased magnon-defect and magnon-hole scattering. By minimizing defect and boundary scattering, the single crystal sample with x = 2 demonstrates a further enhanced room-temperature magnon thermal conductivity of 19 W m − 1 K − 1 , which is more than ten times larger than that of the undoped polycrystalline material. This study reveals the interplay between magnon-hole scattering and magnon-defect scattering in modifying magnon thermal transport, providing valuable insights into the control of magnon transport properties in magnetic materials. Amorphous thin films grown by magnetron co-sputtering exhibit changes in atomic structure with varying growth and annealing temperatures. Structural variations influence the bulk properties of the films. Scanning nanodiffraction performed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) is applied to amorphous Tb17Co83 (a-Tb-Co) films deposited over a range of temperatures to measure relative changes in medium-range ordering (MRO). These measurements reveal an increase in MRO with higher growth temperatures and a decrease in MRO with higher annealing temperatures. The trend in MRO indicates a relationship between the growth conditions and local atomic ordering. By tilting select films, the TEM measures variations in the local atomic structure as a function of orientation within the films. The findings support claims that preferential ordering along the growth direction results from temperature-mediated adatom configurations during deposition, and that oriented MRO correlates with increased structural anisotropy, explaining the strong growth-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy found in rare earth-transition metal films. Beyond magnetic films, we propose the tilted FEM workflow as a method of extracting anisotropic structural information in a variety of amorphous materials with directionally dependent bulk properties, such as films with inherent bonding asymmetry grown by physical vapor deposition.

Magnetic materials with high negative spin polarization have been sought as a building block to increase the design freedom and performance of spintronics devices. In this paper, we investigate negative spin polarization of Mn2VGa Heusler alloy in current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance (CPP-GMR) devices. We fabricated an epitaxial CPP-GMR stack consisting of Mn2VGa/Ag/CoFe with L21 ordering in the Mn2VGa layer and observed negative magnetoresistance (MR), which provided evidence of negative spin polarization. The MR ratio depended on thermal treatments (deposition at an elevated temperature and post-annealing), because these processes affected the ordering, roughness, and magnetic properties of Mn2VGa. The maximum MR ratio reached −1.8% at room temperature and −3.0% at low temperatures, representing the highest among the negative MR values in pseudo-spin-valve CPP-GMR devices despite the underestimation due to an incomplete antiparallel magnetization configuration. The advancement of magnetic materials with coupled magneto-structural phase transition (MST) to fulfill the ultimate objectives of practical solid-state cooling applications requires a better understanding of the hysteresis phenomenon linked across the phase transition region along with the large magnetocaloric parameters. For the present sample Mn0.65Ni0.65Fe0.70Si, the MST is associated with a sharp jump in magnetization along with a small thermal hysteresis of ∼13 K. A giant isothermal magnetic entropy change (| Δ S M max |) of ∼37.6 J kg−1 K−1 at 299 K and effective refrigerant capacity (R C effe ) of ∼214.3 J kg−1 under ΔH = 30 kOe is obtained with excellent compatibility between the martensite and austenite phases. The geometrical compatibility condition, i.e., very small (∼0.55%) deviation of the middle eigenvalue (λ 2) from unity justifies the observation of small hysteresis in the present material. The investigation of hysteresis behavior under different extents of the driving forces (temperature or magnetic field) reveals that both the driving forces trigger equally the phase transition and are responsible equivalently for the hysteresis phenomenon. The present study provides a pathway to understand the complexity of the hysteresis behavior, its impact on the reversibility of magnetocaloric effect, and its minimization by optimizing the geometrical compatibility condition between the austenite and martensite phases. In this paper, an ultra-thin metamaterial absorber (UMA) in the S-band is designed. The overall structure adopts a three-layer design. The top layer is a magnetic material, and the middle layer of the UMA is composed of a centrally symmetrical open square ring (four edges are opened) and a circular pattern placed at the center, which is etched on the FR4 dielectric substrate by printed circuit board technology. The absorptivity of the absorber is more than 90% in 1.73–4.04 GHz under normal incidence, and the fractional bandwidth is 80.1%. The total thickness of the absorber is about 3.4 mm, corresponding to 0.02 λ L at the lowest operating frequency. Moreover, it also has good polarization insensitivity and wide-angle incident characteristics. The absorption mechanism of the UMA is analyzed from the aspects of power loss density and surface current. Finally, a sample was fabricated and measured. Magnetic refrigeration technology is regarded as one of the ideal solutions for cryogenic refrigeration, while magnetocaloric materials are the crucial ones. A series of polycrystalline RE2Ti2O7 (RE = Gd, Tb, and Ho) compounds were prepared by a simple one-step solid-phase reaction method in the atmosphere. The crystal structure, magnetic properties, and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of these compounds were systematically investigated. Crystallographic research indicates that these compounds crystallized in a pyrochlore structure. Meanwhile, magnetic measurements illustrate that this class of pyrochlore oxides is highly frustrated magnetic materials and exhibits complex magnetic behavior. In addition, under the field change of 0–1 T, the values of the maximum magnetic entropy change (− Δ S M max ) and the refrigeration capacity are calculated to be 0.9 and 5.8 J/kg for Gd2Ti2O7, 9.0 and 32.9 J/kg for Tb2Ti2O7, 9.9 and 29.9 J/kg for Ho2Ti2O7, respectively. Therefore, RE2Ti2O7 (RE = Tb and Ho) pyrochlores exhibit excellent MCEs under low magnetic fields, providing candidate materials for the application of cryogenic magnetic refrigeration technology. When polarized light is incident on a magnetic material, the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) rotates the polarization and induces ellipticity in the reflected light, which allows the magnetization direction to be probed optically. The Kerr rotation and ellipticity determine the magnitude of the effect and are usually measured using dedicated ellipsometers. Here, we demonstrate a simple method for extracting Kerr rotation and ellipticity in magnetic thin films using a conventional MOKE magnetometer consisting of two polarizers and a quarter waveplate. Using this technique, we report the longitudinal Kerr angle of BiYIG, GdCo, and TbCo. We additionally observe a linear decrease in polar complex Kerr angle magnitude in 3 nm GdCo films as the atomic fraction of Gd is increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional magnetic materials have been increasingly studied and discussed in the field of spintronics due to their unique electronic properties, high spin polarizability, and a variety of magnetic properties. In this paper, we report a new two-dimensional bilayer hexagonal monolayer material bilayer hexagonal structure (BHS)-CrN2 by first-principles calculations. The BHS-CrN2 nanosheet is an intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor material, and the Curie temperature obtained by Monte Carlo simulation is 343 K. The absence of a significant imaginary frequency in the phonon spectrum indicates the dynamic stability of BHS-CrN2. After ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, the supercell of BHS-CrN2 remains a complete structure, indicating its thermal stability. The calculated elastic moduli satisfy the Born–Huang criterion, indicating that the BHS-CrN2 system has good mechanical stability. Interestingly, the compressive strain and O atom doping can transform the electronic structure of BHS-CrN2 from a semiconductor to a half-metal, and the Curie temperature of BHS-CrN2 can be further increased to 1059 K when a 5% tensile strain is applied. Furthermore, the BHS-CrN2 in the ferromagnetic state shows a significant in-plane magnetic anisotropy energy of 0.01 meV per Cr, and the CrP2 and CrAs2 show a large out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy energy of 0.207 and 0.988 meV per Cr, respectively. The results show that the intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor BHS-CrN2 has good stability, high Curie temperature, and tunable magnetic properties, which is a promising material for room-temperature spintronic devices.
