Hepatotoxicity is a common side effect of doxorubicin (Dox) treatment of cancer. Liv-52 is an ayurvedic medicine that is reported to ameliorate liver injury due to oxidative stress. We investigated the effects of Liv-52 on Dox induced oxidative damage to liver tissues of rats using biochemical and histopathological techniques. Thirty male rats were assigned randomly into three equal groups: control (CG), Dox group (DG) Liv-52 + Dox group (LD). Rats in the LD group received 50 mg/kg Liv-52 in distilled water via gastric gavage. Distilled water was given via the same route to the rats in the DG and CG groups. Rats in the LD and DG groups were injected intraperitoneally with 5 mg/kg Dox 1 h after administration of Liv-52 or distilled water. The procedure was repeated daily for 7 days. On day 8, the animals were sacrificed, and serum and tissue biochemical and histopathological assays were performed. The malondialdehyde level was increased significantly in the DG group, while glutathione and superoxide dismutase levels were significantly lower in the DG group compared to the LD and CG groups. The highest levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase were found in the DG group, while the lowest levels were found in the CG group, which exhibited levels similar to those of the LD group. Treatment with Liv-52 prior to Dox treatment reduced the histopathologic changes in the Dox group. Background: Liver is the largest gland, accounts for approximately 2.5% of total body weight and also liver called as the metabolic “engine-room of the body.” Liver plays role in both metabolism as well as biochemical transformation. Therefore, it is vital to maintain a healthy liver for overall health and well-being. However, liver is continuously exposed to exogenous substances such as toxins, drugs, and alcohol which can ultimately lead to various liver disorders. Liver diseases today are one of the most fatal diseases globally. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate lipid peroxidation (LPO) and lipid profile levels of Vitamin D and combination with Liv-52 on carbon tetrachloride induced liver disease in rats. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six adult male Albino Wistar rats weighing 150–200 g were used in this study. Liver disease was induced in rats by administration of Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intraperitoneally at the dose of 1 mL mixed with 50% of olive oil twice a week for 5 weeks, 3 days interval between each dose, after confirmation of liver disease treated with Vitamin D and Liv-52 for 5 weeks. Results: The levels of LPO were significantly decreased in Vitamin D and Liv-52 treated animals when compared with CCl4 induced animals. Total cholesterol, free cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides (TGs) levels were significantly reduced when compared with CCl4 induced rats. However, the levels of ester cholesterol and free fatty acids (FFAs) were significantly increased in Vitamin D and Liv-52 treated animals when compared with CCl4 induced animals. Conclusion: Vitamin D and Liv-52 effectively reduced the LPO levels. Treatment with Vitamin D and Liv-52, the levels of total and free cholesterol, phospholipids, and TGs were significantly reduced and treatment with both combinations highly reduced all these levels when compared with CCl4 induced animals. And treatment with Vitamin D and Liv-52, the ester cholesterol and FFAs levels were increased.

Abstract Background Liver ischemia reperfusion (I/R) damage which is frequently seen in clinical hepatobiliary surgeries has no effective treatment for it. Liv-52, known to have hepatoprotective effects, is a natural antioxidant drug licensed by the Ministry of Health of India. The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of Liv-52 on liver damage induced by I/R in rats. Methods Albino Wistar male rats were divided into three groups; liver I/R (IR), 20 mg/kg Liv-52 + liver ischemia reperfusion (LIR) and sham operation applied to control group (HG). Liv-52 was administered to the LIR group (n = 6) 1 h prior to I/R application and distilled water was given orally to IR (n = 6) and HG (n = 6) groups as a solvent. Ischemia was determined as 1 h, and reperfusion was identified as 6 h in animals. Results Increased levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, malondialdehyde, myeloperoxidase, and decreased levels of superoxide dismutase, and glutathione related enzymes caused by I/R application have been converged to healthy group level with Liv-52 treatment and the damage in liver tissue has been improved histopathologically. Conclusions Liv-52 may be beneficial for preventing liver I/R damage in pre-surgery application.

Introduction: Indigenous herbs such as Momordica charantia L., Nardostachys jatamansi (D. Don) DC., Justicia adhatoda L. and Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers. are known to improve several disease characteristics including hepatoprotective activities. Objective: We aimed to demonstrate the hepatoprotective potential of indigenous herbs Momordica charantia L., Tephrosia purpurea(L.) Pers., Justicia adhatoda L. & Nardostachys jatamansi (D. Don) DC. in tetrachloromethane (CCl4) encouraged liver toxicity in Albino (Wister strain) rodent model. Methods: In Albino rats (Wister strain, n=114), hepatotoxicity was induced using CCl4 & the liver enzyme & histopathological profiles with an extent of the regenerative changes were evaluated. A total of 19 groups of rats were created containing six rats in each group & received the following - group 1: control group, group 2: CCl40.7 ml/kg, group 3: Liv-52 1 ml/kg. Light petroleum, trichloromethane, alcohol & watery extricates of Justicia adhatoda L.(200mg/kg), Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers. (200mg/kg), Momordica charantia L.(200mg/kg), & Nardostachys jatamansi (D. Don) DC.(500mg/kg)were administered in one group each (total 16 groups). Results-The trichloromethane extricate of Justicia adhatoda L, Light petroleum extricate of Nardostachys jatamansi (D. Don) DC. & Momordica charantia L., alcoholic extricates of Nardostachys jatamansi (D. Don) DC. displayed a noticeable reduction in the concentration of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase SGPT), serum alkaline phosphatase (SALP), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), bilirubin & other serum markers, indicating prominent hepatocytes with more regenerative activity, which signifies better hepatoprotective action as evaluated with other groups. Light petroleum & watery extricates of Justicia adhatoda L., Momordica charantia L. alcoholic extricates, Light petroleum, alcoholalcohol & trichloromethane extricates of Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers. showed moderate reductions in the liver enzyme levels & moderate degree of fatty changes. However, the alcoholic extricates of Justicia adhatoda L., & trichloromethane, watery extricate of Momordica charantia L., watery & trichloromethane extricate of Nardostachys jatamansi (D. Don) DC. & watery extricate of Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers. showed no reduction in the enzyme levels, indicating no activity. The total & direct bilirubin was also assessed in the blood serum, & there was no considerable difference among the groups. Conclusion: The hepatoprotective activity screening indicates that trichloromethane extricate of Justicia adhatoda L., Light petroleum extricate of Nardostachys jatamansi (D. Don) DC. & Momordica charantia L., showed more prominent hepatoprotective activity. Light petroleum & watery extricates of Justicia adhatoda L., alcoholic extricates of Nardostachys jatamansi (D. The hepatoprotective effect of leaf extract of Jatropha curcas L. was investigated against carbon tetrachloride (CC14)-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. Wistar albino rats were treated with pet, ether, alcoholic and aqueous leaf extract (200mg/kg, p.o.) for seven days along with CC14 on alternate days. Biochemical parameters such as serum glutamyl oxalacetic acid transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamyl pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and total bilirubin (TBL) were estimated. The extracts showed protective effect by lowering serum levels of various biochemical parameters in the selected model. The present study aims to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of Stereospermum suaveolens DC (Bignoniaceae). Hepatoprotective activity is studied by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver damage in albino rats. The degree of protection in this activity has been measured by using biochemical parameters such as serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, LDL-cholesterol and SOD, CAT, GSH, total thiols, NO, and lipid peroxidation in liver tissue homogenate. The results suggest that the methanol stem bark extract of Stereospermum suaveolens at the doses 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg and reference standard Liv-52 treated group produced significant (p <0.001) hepatoprotection against CCl4-induced liver damage by decreasing the activities of serum enzymes, bilirubin and lipid peroxidation. The extract significantly (p <0.001) increased levels of SOD, CAT, GSH and total thiols, as compared to control group. Histopathological studies further substantiate the protective effect of the extract. Abstract: Cirrhosis is the irreversible sequel of various disorders that damage liver cells permanently over time. Presently, the use of herbal medicines for prevention and control of chronic liver diseases is in the focus of attention for both the physicians and the patients; the reasons for such shift toward the use of herbals include the expensive cost of conventional drugs, adverse drug reactions, and their inefficacy. In the present study, the efficacy of herbal medicine Liv-52 (consisting of Mandur basma, Tamarix gallica and herbal extracts of Capparis spinosa, Cichorium intybus, Solanum nigrum, Terminalia arjuna and Achillea millefolium) on liver cirrhosis outcomes was compared with the placebo for 6 months in 36 cirrhotic patients referred to Tehran Hepatic Center. The outcome measures included child-pugh score, ascites, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total billirubin, albumin, prothrombin time, platelet and white blood cells counts. The indices were recorded in all patients before and after 6 months of drug or placebo treatment. The results demonstrated that the patients treated with Liv-52 for 6 months had significantly better child-pugh score, decreased ascites, decreased serum ALT and AST. In placebo administered patients all the clinical parameters recorded at beginning of the study were not significantly different than after 6 months. We conclude that Liv-52 possess hepatoprotective effect in cirrhotic patients. This protective effect of Liv-52 can be attributed to the diuretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and immunomodulating properties of the component herbs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

An ayurvedic medicine, Liv-52, was studied as a prophylactic agent against beryllium-induced toxicity in rats. Administration of beryllium per se caused severe degenerative and necrotic changes in kidneys, liver, and uterus. Beryllium exposure also reduced glycogen content, activities of alkaline phosphatase, succinate-dehydrogenase, and adenosine-triphosphatase in these organs. On the contrary, activities of acid phosphatase and glucose-6-phosphatase showed marginal increase. Liv-52-primed rats exhibited comparatively less marked toxic effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An experimental trial of six weeks was undertaken on 60 broiler chicks from day old to six weeks of age divided into three groups, each group having twenty birds. Control (T1) group was fed standard feed and T2 and T3 groups were supplemented with 0.05 and 0.1 per cent of Liv-52 powder per kg feed respectively. The haemoglobin concentration and total leucocyte count was found to be significantly (P<0.05) increased in treatment group as compared to control. There was significant (P<0.05) increase in packed cell volume, total erythrocyte count, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular volume in the Liv-52 supplemented group than control. Abstract: Objective: To study the hepatoprotective activity of methanol and aqueous extracts of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius tubers against paracetamol induced liver damage in rats. Methods: Hepatotoxicity was induced by paracetamol and the biochemical parameters such as serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (sGPT), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (sGOT) and serum alkaline phosphatase (sALP), serum bilirubin (SB) and histopathological changes in liver were studied along with silymarin and Liv-52 as standard hepatoprotective agents. Results: The phytochemical investigation of the extracts showed presence of carbohydrates, proteins, steroids and flavonoids. Pre-treatment of the rats with methanol and aqueous extract prior to paracetamol administration caused a significant reduction in the values of sGOT, sGPT, sALP and sB (P<0.01) almost comparable to the silymarin and Liv-52. The hepatoprotective was confirmed by histopathological examination of the liver tissue of control and treated animals. Conclusions: From the results it can be concluded that Amorphophallus paeoniifolius possesses hepatoprotective effect against paracetamol-induced liver damage in rats. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
