Abstract

The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly developed Python packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy Project is the core package astropy, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we provide an overview of the organization of the Astropy project and summarize key features in the core package, as of the recent major release, version 2.0. We then describe the project infrastructure designed to facilitate and support development for a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages. We conclude with a future outlook of planned new features and directions for the broader Astropy Project.

Abstract

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay in {Mathematical expression}Te. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles as well as provide information about the absolute neutrino mass scale and mass hierarchy.The CUORE setup will consist of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (containing 206 kg of {Mathematical expression}Te in total), operated as bolometers at a temperature of {Mathematical expression}10 mK. The experiment is now under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, a tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and is taking data. Here a detailed description of the CUORE-0 tower and its performance is reported. The status of the CUORE experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The experiment has been installed and commissioned at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso and has started operation in November 2011. Abstract

We present a study of the sensitivity and discovery potential of CUORE, abolometric double-beta decay experiment under construction at the LaboratoriNazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Two approaches to the computation ofexperimental sensitivity for various background scenarios are presented, and anextension of the sensitivity formulation to the discovery potential case isalso discussed. Assuming a background rate of 10^-2 cts/(keV kg y), we findthat, after 5 years of live time, CUORE has a 1 sigma sensitivity to theneutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of T_1/2(1 sigma) = 1.6 \times 10^26 yand thus a potential to probe the effective Majorana neutrino mass down to40-100 meV; the sensitivity at 1.64 sigma, which corresponds to 90% C.L., willbe T_1/2(1.64 sigma) = 9.5 \times 10^25 y. This range is compared with theclaim of observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge and thepreferred range of the neutrino mass parameter space from oscillation results.

Abstract

Characterizing the structure of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) in three dimensions is of high importance for accurate modeling of dust emission as a foreground to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). At high Galactic latitude, where the total dust content is low, accurate maps of the 3D structure of the ISM are lacking. We develop a method to quantify the complexity of the distribution of dust along the line of sight with the use of H i line emission. The method relies on a Gaussian decomposition of the H i spectra to disentangle the emission from overlapping components in velocity. We use this information to create maps of the number of clouds along the line of sight. We apply the method to (a) the high Galactic latitude sky and (b) the region targeted by the BICEP/Keck experiment. In the north Galactic cap we find on average three clouds per 0.2 square degree pixel, while in the south the number falls to 2.5. The statistics of the number of clouds are affected by intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs), primarily in the north. IVCs produce detectable features in the dust emission measured by Planck. We investigate the complexity of H i spectra in the BICEP/Keck region and find evidence for the existence of multiple components along the line of sight. We show that binary Toeplitz flows can be interpreted as Delone dynamical systems induced by model sets and analyse the quantitative relations between the respective system parameters. This has a number of immediate consequences for the theory of model sets. In particular, we use our results in combination with special examples of irregular Toeplitz flows from the literature to demonstrate that irregular proper model sets may be uniquely ergodic and do not need to have positive entropy. Context. Data gridding is a common task in astronomy and many other science disciplines. It refers to the resampling of irregularly sampled data to a regular grid. Aims. We present cygrid, a library module for the general purpose programming language Python. Cygrid can be used to resample data to any collection of target coordinates, although its typical application involves FITS maps or data cubes. The FITS world coordinate system standard is supported. Methods. The regridding algorithm is based on the convolution of the original samples with a kernel of arbitrary shape. We introduce a lookup table scheme that allows us to parallelize the gridding and combine it with the HEALPix tessellation of the sphere for fast neighbor searches. Results. We show that for n input data points, cygrids runtime scales between O(n) and O(n log n) and analyze the performance gain that is achieved using multiple CPU cores. We also compare the gridding speed with other techniques, such as nearest-neighbor, and linear and cubic spline interpolation. Conclusions. Cygrid is a very fast and versatile gridding library that significantly outperforms other third-party Python modules, such as the linear and cubic spline interpolation provided by SciPy. Abstract

Anabolic androgenic steroids lead to cardiac complications and have been shown to exhibit proapoptotic effects in cardiac cells; however, the mechanism involved in those effects is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess whether apoptosis and the activation of caspase-3 (Casp-3) induced by testosterone in high concentrations involves increments in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentrations and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity in cardiomyocytes (H9c2) cell cultures. Cardiomyocytes were treated with testosterone (5 × 10−6 mol/L), doxorubicin (9.2 × 10−6 mol/L), testosterone + etanercept (Eta; 6.67 × 10−5 mol/L), testosterone + losartan (Los; 10−7 mol/L), and testosterone + AC-DEVD-CHO (10−5 mol/L; Casp-3 inhibitor). Apoptosis was determined by flow cytometry and by the proteolytic activity of Casp-3. We demonstrated that incubation of H9c2 cells for 48 h with testosterone causes the apoptotic death of 60–70% of the cells and co-treatments with Eta, Los, or AC-DEVD-CHO reduced this effect. Testosterone also induces apoptosis (concentration dependent) and increases the proteolytic activity of Casp-3, which were reduced by co-treatments. TNF-α and ACE activities were elevated by testosterone treatment, while co-treatment with Los and Eta reduced these effects. We concluded that an interaction between testosterone, angiotensin II, and TNF-α induced apoptosis and Casp-3 activity in cultured cardiomyocytes, which contributed to the reduced viability of these cells induced by testosterone in toxic concentrations. Context. Given the current and past star-formation in the Milky Way in combination with the limited gas supply, the re-fuelling of the reservoir of cool gas is an important aspect of Galactic astrophysics. The infall of Hi halo clouds can, among other mechanisms, contribute to solving this problem. Aims. We study the intermediate-velocity cloud IVC135+54 and its spatially associated high-velocity counterpart to look for signs of a past or ongoing interaction. Methods. Using the Effelsberg-Bonn Hi Survey data, we investigated the interplay of gas at different velocities. In combination with far-infrared Planck and IRIS data, we extended this study to interstellar dust and used the correlation of the data sets to infer information on the dark gas. Results. The velocity structure indicates a strong compression and deceleration of the infalling high-velocity cloud (HVC), associated with far-infrared excess emission in the intermediate-velocity cloud. This excess emission traces molecular hydrogen, confirming that IVC135+54 is one of the very few molecular halo clouds. The high dust emissivity of IVC135+54 with respect to the local gas implies that it consists of disk material and does not, unlike the HVC, have an extragalactic origin. Conclusions. Based on the velocity structure of the HVC and the dust content of the IVC, a physical connection between them appears to be the logical conclusion. Since this is not compatible with the distance difference between the two objects, we conclude that this particular HVC might be much closer to us than complex C. Abstract: We consider minimal, aperiodic symbolic subshifts and show how to characterize the combinatorial property of bounded powers by means of a metric property. For this purpose we construct a family of graphs which all approximate the subshift space, and define a metric on each graph, which extends to a metric on the subshift space. The characterization of bounded powers is then given by the Lipschitz equivalence of a suitably defined infimum metric with the corresponding supremum metric. We also introduce zeta-functions and relate their abscissa of convergence to various exponents of complexity of the subshift. Static and dynamic measurements are performed with GaAs oxide-confined vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), using multimode fibers with a core diameter of 50 and 62.5 μm and different numerical apertures (NAs). They show that a small NA can have a severe impact on the eye opening and thus also on the bit-error rate. The measurements are analyzed with a spatiotemporal two-dimensional (2-D) multimode VCSEL model. The required parameter extraction for the model is verified with small- and large-signal measurements. The analysis shows that the change of the eye opening can be explained by the interaction between the mode- and the current-injection profile, carrier diffusion, and intermodal gain compression (IGC). IGC increases differences in the modal power distribution caused by the interaction between the mode profiles and the current-injection profile. The production of antibodies against the organophosphorus hapten soman has been undertaken in rabbits and by employing monoclonal techniques. The polyclonal rabbit antibodies did not cross-react with soman but were inhibited by soman analogs in a competitive inhibition enzyme immunoassay (CIEIA). In contrast the monoclonal antisoman antibodies were inhibited specifically by soman in the CIEIA but not by sarin nor the hydrolysis products of soman. The monoclonal antibodies were able to compete with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) for soman when the antibody was present in a molar concentration equal to the antibody-soman dissociation constant, resulting in a retardation of the rate of inhibition of AChE by soman. When monoclonal antibodies were administered to mice in a passive immunization regimen, the times-to-death increased twofold at an LD70 or LD90 dose level. These results suggest that the monoclonal antibodies have proper characteristics for use as an immunocytochemical reagent of high specificity. The ability of the antisoman monoclonal antibodies to compete with AChE for soman and the preliminary data indicate that selected monoclonal antibodies may prove useful in a therapeutic or prophylactic mode for organophosphorus poisoning. 45. Dislocation Contribution to Ultrasonic Attenuation in Zinc Crystals as Function of Orientation, Irradiation, Plastic Deformation, and Recovery.

Abstract

The ultrasonic attenuation in zinc single crystals has been measured between 5 and 105 MHz for all pure modes possible in this metal. By comparing the results with the orientation factors of the Granato-Lücke theory of dislocation resonance damping, the contribution of dislocations on {1122} planes to the attenuation has been quantitatively determined. The participation of nonbasal dislocations has also been proved by measurements of dislocation pinning due to γ irradiation and recovery thereafter. The recovery of the attenuation has been measured between 77° and 350°K. Recovery steps have been found at about 105° and 160°K. Measurements of the recovery after plastic deformation in the temperature range from 230° to 300°K yield an activation energy of 0.56 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
