Abstract

Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) is being rapidly utilized for screening and diagnosing breast cancer. Breast masses, including cancers shown in ABUS scans, often appear as irregular hypoechoic areas that are hard to distinguish from background shadings. We propose a novel branch network architecture incorporating segmentation information of masses in the training process. The branch network is integrated into neural network, providing the spatial attention effect. The branch network boosts the performance of existing classifiers, helping to learn meaningful features around the target breast mass. For the segmentation information, we leverage the existing radiology reports without additional labeling efforts. The reports, which is generated in medical image reading process, should include the characteristics of breast masses, such as shape and orientation, and a template mask can be created in a rule-based manner. Experimental results show that the proposed branch network with a template mask significantly improves the performance of existing classifiers. Abstract

Given that vanadium is a valuable material, the implementation of vanadium recycling processes is thus necessary to enhance the element's value chain as well as minimize its undesirable environmental consequences. Among various remediation methods available, a biological method based on microalgal adsorption is known to be eco-friendly and calls for further investigations. Herein, we evaluated V2O5 adsorption efficiencies of four different microalgal strains: Nannochloropsis oculata, Heterocapsa circularisquama, Chattonella marina, and Chattonella antiqua. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) data indicated that vanadium concentration in the culture medium of Nannochloropsis oculata was reduced from 4.61 ± 0.11 mg L−1 to 1.85 ± 0.21 mg L−1 after being exposed to V2O5 solution for 24 h, whereas the supernatants of the other three strains displayed no change in vanadium ion concentration. Therefore, our results indicated a strong potential of Nannochloropsis oculata for recycling vanadium with approximately 59.9% of vanadium ion removal efficiency. Furthermore, morphological observation of Nannochloropsis oculata using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the cells were able to maintain their intact morphology even under the presence of high concentrations of heavy metals. Due to the high adsorption efficiency and robustness of Nannochloropsis oculata, the results collectively support it as a potential strain for V2O5 recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study explored the perceptual components of the third-person effects of fake news during the 2017 presidential election in South Korea. Specifically, we examined self-other disparities in perceptions of the effects of fake news using data from an online panel survey. The results indicated that the participants considered the influence of fake news to be greater on others than on themselves. We also found political interest and fact-checking to be significant predictors of the self-other disparities associated with perceptions of fake news. Abstract

Measurement of variations in integrated optical intensity (IOI) and arteriolar diameter after topical applications of PTK inhibitors genistein and tyrphostin 25 using computer-aided image analysis and intravital microscopy helps study the interactions between protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and platelet-activating factor (PAF) in the regulation of microvascular responses in hamster cheek pouch. PTK forms a mechanism for the regulation of microvascular permeability by PAF but not for the regulation of arteriolar tone. Pretreatment with tyrphostin 25 and genistein minimizes the PAF-induced maximal increase in mean IOI. PTK inhibitors cause vasodilation but do not inhibit the vasoconstriction caused by PAF.

Abstract

We found that the newly isolated dinoflagellate strain Karenia mikimotoi NGU04 generates O2– at a level almost equal to that of the raphidophycean flagellate Chattonella marina, and much higher than those of other strains of K. mikimotoi. Fluorescence microscopy observation of strain NGU04 suggested that ROS such as O2– and H2O2 are generated in certain intracellular compartments. As in C. marina, a significant increase in O2– generation was observed in the presence of lectins suggesting that K. mikimotoi has a signalling system that can respond to extracellular stimuli. The NGU04 strain showed a greater lethal effect on rotifers than other strains, but the toxicity was not inhibited by ROS-scavenging enzymes. Our findings indicate that different strains of K. mikimotoi can generate different amounts of ROS depending on the strain, but certain toxic factors other than ROS may be responsible for rotifer toxicity. Abstract

The cosmetics industry is one of the most profitable in the world today. This multi-billion-dollar industry has a profound sociological impact worldwide. Its influence is global, with most individuals being concerned with conserving their physical appearance, beauty, and youth. The consumers' desire for novel, better, and safer products has stimulated the utilization of natural-product-based cosmeceutical formulations over synthetic chemicals. With remarkable advancements in marine bioresource technology, algal polysaccharides have gained much attention as bioactive ingredients in cosmeceuticals. Algae biosynthesize a variety of polysaccharides including fucoidans, alginates, carrageenans, galactans, agar, porphyran, glucans, and ulvans, all of which exhibit distinctive structural and functional properties. Many of these materials have been proven to possess skin-protective effects, including anti-wrinkle, lightening, moisturizing, UV protective, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory activity. Moreover, they have a wide spectrum of physicochemical properties, such as the ability to form hydrogels, which extend their utilization as emulsifiers, stabilizers, and viscosity controlling ingredients in cosmeceuticals. Accordingly, algal hydrocolloids and their synthetic derivatives can also be applied in tissue engineering and cosmetic surgery. The challenge is to increase awareness about these polysaccharides and consequently generate value-added products.
