R. acetosella is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Polygonaceae family and is consumed as a vegetable among the people in Turkey. In this study, antimicrobial (Escherichia coli, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and Candida albicans yeast-fungi), antiradical (against to DPPH, ABTS and OH radicals), anticancer (against to human prostate cancer (PC-3), human colon cancer (HCT-116), human ovarian cancer (A2780) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines) and phytochemical properties (lipid-soluble vitamins, fatty acids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, phytosterols, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoid, and total proanthocyanidins) of ethanol, water and methanol extracts of R. acetosella aerial parts were investigated. According to our results, it was determined that R. acetosella extracts have higher activity than the BHT in scavenging tests of ABTS, DPPH and OH radicals. It has also been understood that this plant has high antimicrobial activity and phytochemical content and effective anticancer activities against to PC-3 human prostate cancer cell lines. Rheum ribes L. (rhubarb) is belonging to Polygonaceae, and its roots and fresh shoots are consumed as vegetable in Turkey. This plant is considered to be one of the most important pharmaceutical raw materials in Middle East. In this study, the antiradical, antimicrobial, cytotoxic and bioactive properties of water, ethanol, and methanol extracts of R. ribes stems were determined. R. ribes stems water, ethanol and methanol extracts are better scavenged ABTS•+ (99.27, 99.91, and 99.88%), DPPH• (83.11, 81.42, and 83.26%), and OH• radicals (93.49, 94.21, 95.86%) than standard antioxidant BHA (95.32, 80.49, and 93.78%). Stems of R. ribes abundantly include bioactive compounds, dominated by rutin, catechin, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, α-tocopherol and vitamin D. These extracts show effective cytotoxic properties against PC-3, A2780, HCT-116 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines at 24h. It is found that R. ribes contain high amount important bioactive contents, and has effective antiradical and cytotoxic properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypericum scabrum L. has been widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of many diseases just as the other Hypericum species. In the present study, the antiradical, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of water and ethanol extracts of H. scabrum flowers were investigated. Their phytochemical contents and composition were also determined. The water and ethanol extracts are better scavenged ABTS (97.89 and 98.99%) and OH radicals (96.36 and 97.33%); the water extract is better scavenged DPPH radicals (91.66%) than the standard antioxidant BHA (94.33, 85.19, 90.16%, respectively). Flowers of H. scabrum contain flavonoids, phenolic acids, vitamins and phytosterols, dominated by catechin, vanillic acid, vitamin K and ergosterol. The extracts exhibit a strong cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, HCT-116, and LNCaP cancer cell lines. It is found that their antimicrobial activities are higher than the standard antibiotics. These results indicate that H. scabrum flowers have potent antiradical, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pepper fruits keep very important place in the human nutrition and contain some important components in terms of human health. Capsicum frutescens can be consumed both fresh and dry, and has been used in made powdered spices and sauces. In this study, the antiradical activities, phytochemical contents, antimicrobial, antiproliferative activities of water and ethanol extract of C. frutescens fruits were investigated. According to our study results, it was found that the ABTS and OH scavenging activities of C. frutescens extracts are better than the standard antioxidant BHT. It was established that C. frutescens contains high amount of α-tocopherol, vitamin D, phytosterols, flavonoids, proanthocyanidin, phenolics and unsaturated fatty acids. Also, C. frutescens exhibit very high cytotoxic effects on the MCF-7, HCT-116, LNCaP cancer cell lines. Consequently, these results indicate that cayenne pepper may continue to be consumed by humans owing to it has potentially antioxidant, antiproliferative properties and including bioactive compounds. It is known that Celtis species have been used in healing wound, epilepsy crisis, and stomach pain among the people. The antiradical (DPPH, OH, ABTS) activities, phytochemical compounds (total proanthocyanidin, total flavonoid, total phenolic, flavonoids, phenolic acids, sterols, lipid soluble vitamins, fatty acids), antimicrobial, antiproliferative (MCF-7, HCT-116, A2780, PC-3) activities of water, ethanol, methanol extracts of C. tournefortii fruits were evaluated in this study. All the C. tournefortii fruit water extracts were higher scavenged OH radical than standard antioxidant BHT. It was detected that C. tournefortii includes high amount of α-tocopherol (2.65 mg/kg), vitamin D (10.05 mg/kg), ergosterol (78.70 mg/kg), stigmasterol (185.90 mg/kg), unsaturated fatty acids (74.47 %). C. tournefortii extracts showed antiproliferative activity on MCF-7, HCT-116, A2780, PC-3 cancer cell lines and antimicrobial activity on some microorganisms when compared to standard antibiotics. Also, this study is the first report about phytochemical contents, antiproliferative, antimicrobial, antiradical properties of C. tournefortii fruits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
