ZEB1 and ZEB2 have been recently related to cancer prognosis. We investigated their expression and its association with clinicopathological parameters and overall survival in invasive micropapillary carcino-ma (IMPC), which is a metastasising neoplasm of the canine mammary gland. Immunohistochemical evaluation showed nuclear and cytoplasmic staining for ZEB2 and nuclear staining for ZEB1. 'In situ' areas presented higher positivity for cytoplasmic ZEB2 than invasive areas of IMPC did (p = 0.03). ZEB1 posi-tivity was associated with a low histological grade (p = 0.01). A shorter overall survival rate was observed in IMPCs that were positive for cytoplasmic ZEB2 (p = 0.04). Antibodies specificity in canine species was confirmed by western blot. Our results indicated that cytoplasmic ZEB2 appears to be an important factor in the early stages of malignancy and predicts a poor overall survival rate for IMPC in this canine mammary cancer model. Background Hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation is considered a standard-of-care treatment for defined hematological and non-hematological conditions affecting bone marrow–derived cells. Methods Patients and potential donors are HLA typed for their HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1 alleles. The best allogeneic donor is one for which each allele matches the patient at HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DRB1 (8/8). For patients with no related donor, the transplant physician will start a search for unrelated donors. The search is performed through a local registry and often includes the search for donors worldwide. The Argentinean HPC Donors Registry was established in 2003. Our National HPC Donor Registry has already typed more than 31,000 donors for HLA-A, -B, and -DR. Results We present the analysis of HLA frequencies and haplotypes estimates for the subset of our donor database that is additionally typed for HLA-C. We analyzed HLA data from 2657 donors. Antigen and haplotype frequencies were estimated through the use of expectation maximization. Conclusions Our analysis showed for the first time the antigenic HLA frequency distribution from HPC donors in Argentina. Knowing haplotype frequencies in our population will help us to select potential donors for high-resolution typing for the patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPC) of the mammary gland, despite its rare occurrence in humans and dogs, is an important neoplasm due to its aggressive behaviour. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological and immunophenotypical characteristics of IMPC and to determine the overall survival of dogs with this tumour. Of the selected cases, the majority had >3 cm neoplasms (15/19, 78.95%) and lymph node metastases (16/16,100%), but only two cases (2/9, 22.2%) had distant metasta-ses. The IMPCs were classified as either pure (15/22, 68.18%) or mixed (7/22, 31.82%) types. There was a predominance of moderate histological grade tumours (16 grade II) and the average overall survival was 120 days. Positive immunohistochemical staining for epithelial membrane antigen and negative staining for CD-31, p63 and cytokeratin (CK) AE1AE3 in cystic formations confirmed the micropapillary nature of these neoplasms. A proportion of cases exhibited positive epithelial staining for p63 (4/20, 20%) and CK34ßE12 (20/22,90.9%). Most cases were positive for oestrogen (19/20,95%) and progesterone (19/20, 95%) receptors, but lacked HER-2 (16/22, 72.72%) and epidermal growth factor receptor (15/22, 68.18%) over-expression. The mean proliferation index was 14.8%. The findings demonstrate that, similar to humans, canine IMPCs behave aggressively with high rates of metastasis to regional lymph nodes and short overall survival times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article describes the clinical and pathological findings of a three-year-old Pinscher dog that was presented with multifocal neurologic signals because of multicentric hemangiosarcoma (HSA). It defines HSA as a highly malignant neoplasm of vascular endothelial origin occurring more frequently in dogs. In the case, the dog was referred to the Neurological and Neurosurgical Service of Veterinary Teaching Hospital due to lameness and pain in its hind limbs.

The Neolithic transition has been widely debated particularly regarding the extent to which this revolution implied a demographic expansion from the Near East. We attempted to shed some light on this process in northeastern Iberia by combining ancient DNA (aDNA) data from Early Neolithic settlers and published DNA data from Middle Neolithic and modern samples from the same region. We successfully extracted and amplified mitochondrial DNA from 13 human specimens, found at three archaeological sites dated back to the Cardial culture in the Early Neolithic (Can Sadurní and Chaves) and to the Late Early Neolithic (Sant Pau del Camp). We found that haplogroups with a low frequency in modern populations-N* and X1-are found at higher frequencies in our Early Neolithic population (∼31%). Genetic differentiation between Early and Middle Neolithic populations was significant ( FST∼0.13, P < 10−5), suggesting that genetic drift played an important role at this time. To improve our understanding of the Neolithic demographic processes, we used a Bayesian coalescence-based simulation approach to identify the most likely of three demographic scenarios that might explain the genetic data. The three scenarios were chosen to reflect archaeological knowledge and previous genetic studies using similar inferential approaches. We found that models that ignore population structure, as previously used in aDNA studies, are unlikely to explain the data. Our results are compatible with a pioneer colonization of northeastern Iberia at the Early Neolithic characterized by the arrival of small genetically distinctive groups, showing cultural and genetic connections with the Near East. The article describes the case of a maned wolf at the Zoo-Botanic Foundation of Belo Horizonte with nodules on the left inguinal mammarey gland and enlargement of inguinal lymph node. The pulmonary radiography showed no metastatic focus that a radical unilateral mastectomy and excision of the left inguinal lymph node was performed. The article discusses the immunophenotypical and histopathological analysis of tubulopapillary carcinoma.

The article describes the case of an 8-year-old female poodle that is suffering from salivary gland cystadenocarcinoma. The dog underwent cell analysis that revealed a tumor mass that hold several amounts of red blood cells, both of them were being compared by applying cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and CD31-targeted antibodies. The study proved that cystadenocarinoma shared growth traits with another animal cancer called hemangiosarcoma.

Abstract: Intensive conventional farming and continuous use of land resources can lead to agro-ecosystem decline and increased releases of CO2 to the atmosphere as soil organic matter (OM) decays. The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of varying types and depths of tillage on microbial biomass, C content, and humification in the profile of a loamy-sandy soil in the Mugello valley, close to the Apennine Mountains, in Italy. Soil samples were collected to depths of 0–10, 10–20, 20–30 and 30–40cm, in the ninth year following introduction of tillage practices. Highest content of all C forms examined (total, extractable and humified) was found at the 0–10cm depth with minimum tillage (MT) and ripper subsoiling (RS) and at the 30–40cm depth with conventional tillage (CT). Humified C decreased with depth in soils under MT and RS. None of the tillage systems showed any difference in total N and microbial biomass C in the upper depths, but concentrations were greater below 20cm in soils subjected to CT, than other tillage systems. Crop production was similar in all tillage systems. Stratification and redistribution of nutrients were consistent with the well known effects of tillage reduction. Total organic C and its distribution in the profile depended on the tillage system employed. MT and RS can be regarded as excellent conservation tillage systems, because they also sequester C. Waste disposal is an urgent problem in those Italian areas devoted to olive oil production where a large amount of olive oil waste is produced in a short period of time. Given the high organic matter and macronutrient content of olive oil waste water, its use in agriculture could help to solve the disposal problem and, at the same time, to improve the physiochemical characteristics of intensely cultivated soils. However, olive oil waste water contains noteworthy quantities of phenols, which are toxic and have bacteriostatic activity. The effects of repeated spreading of olive oil waste water on alfalfa, on soil microbial properties, and on the availability of mineral nitrogen were determined. Doses of 0, 80, and 160 m 3 ha -1 of olive oil waste water (OW) were spread over experimental plots sown with 3rd year alfalfa. Soil samples were collected at various intervals after OW application. The biomass, respiratory activity, metabolic quotient, mineralization index, and the potential nitrification activity (PNA) of the soil were measured. Polyphenol, organic carbon, and mineral nitrogen contents were measured on the same soil samples. In general, the spreading of OW caused slightly positive modifications to the soil microbial biomass and metabolic quotient. These modifications were temporary and disappeared as early as a few months after the treatment. The PNA, as well as the nitrate and nitrite contents, were lower in the treated plots during the vegetative cycle of alfalfa and after the last harvest, and appeared to be negatively correlated with polyphenols. The results of this experiment confirmed that the spreading of olive oil waste water on cultivated soil could be an eco-compatible practice. Despite their origin, the OW had no toxic effects on the soil microflora, and in fact, stimulated growth and reproduction of cells. Nutritional status as well as energy and protein intake are critical regulators of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 and contribute to the modulation of bone remodeling and formation. The purpose of this study was to investigate on an experimental model with nutritional dwarfing (ND), whether the alterations on body growth velocity, energy metabolism and body composition could affect serum concentrations of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 and bone (tibiae and mandible) histology and histomorphometry. Twenty-one male weanling Wistar rats (body weight = 38.20 +/- 0.94 g) were randomized to three groups: seven of them were killed at day = 0 (CO, n = 7); control (C, n = 7); and experimental 80 (E80, n = 7). During 4 weeks, C was fed ad libitum with a 1:1 carbohydrate to fat diet. E80 was being underfed with the same diet by 80% and the following parameters were measured: weight (Wt) for length (L) ratio z-score; oxygen consumption (VO2); body composition (BC) by EM-SCAN SA 3000. At t = 28, E80 and C were killed. Serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 and bone histology and histomorphometry were performed on C0, E80 and C. E80 showed Wt for L z-score between lean and adequate, a decrease in VO2 according to body proportions, a BC of a delayed puberty individual, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 decreased by 56 and 53%, respectively. Tibiae's hematopoyetic and adipose bone marrow areas were combined, with sealing trabeculae on metaphyseal areas. This study suggests that there is a relationship among growth deceleration in ND rats and structural alterations on tibiae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJETIVO: Analisar e comparar os cuidados primários prestados à população materno-infantil e contribuir para a avaliação da assistência integral a esse grupo. MÉTODOS: Inquérito populacional realizado por entrevistas, no principal posto de vacinação do Município de Teresópolis, RJ, no Dia Nacional de Vacinação, que abrangeu questões sobre utilização de serviços de saúde e prestação de cuidados primários preventivos. RESULTADOS: Foram colhidas informações de 329 crianças e suas respectivas mães. Mais de 90% das crianças haviam comparecido à consulta pediátrica nos três meses anteriores e quase todas possuíam o cartão da criança, embora em 30% desses cartões não havia qualquer peso registrado no período. Observou-se associação positiva entre consulta de puericultura e registro de peso no cartão da criança (RP = 1,34; IC: 1,13-1,58; p = 0,0002). Cerca de 59% das mães compareceram à consulta de revisão de parto, mas 25% referiram nunca ter feito exame colpocitológico-oncótico e 36% nunca haviam realizado exame de mama. Observou-se associação positiva entre a idade materna acima de 20 anos e a realização de algum exame colpocitológico-oncótico durante a vida reprodutiva (RP = 1,56; IC: 1,08-2,26; p = 0,03). Quase 70% das mães relataram uso de algum método anticoncepcional, principalmente pílula, condom e laqueadura tubária. CONCLUSÕES: Apesar de algumas limitações, os resultados sugerem a viabilidade da metodologia utilizada, permitindo a identificação de deficiências importantes na prestação de cuidados primários de saúde para crianças e principalmente para mães.
