Introduction: Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, poses a significant threat to a range of crops worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of entomopathogenic fungi (Alternaria murispora and Alternaria destruens) and bacteria (Streptomyces bellus-E23-2) against adult females of P. solenopsis under laboratory (26 ± 2°C) and greenhouse conditions. Methods: Laboratory trials tested A. murispora, A. destruens (104-1010 conidia mL-1), and S. bellus E23-2 (104-1010 cfu mL-1), alone and in combination, recording mortality rates and LC50 values. Greenhouse trials tested the best lab treatments on infested potato plants, monitoring pest density and plant quality. Results and discussion: In laboratory trials, A. murispora at 1010 conidia mL-1 was the most effective, achieved 79.7% mortality (LC50 = 1.338 x 108 conidia mL-1 after 14 days). Combination treatments significantly enhanced efficacy, with A. murispora + S. bellus E23-2 (1010 conidia mL-1 + 1010 cfu mL-1) reaching 85.3% mortality. In greenhouse trials, the combination treatments notably reduced P. solenopsis densities and increased the number of infected mealybugs, with A. murispora + S. bellus E23-2 being the most effective. These treatments did not harm plant quality, unlike imidacloprid, which reduced visual quality despite its high efficacy. Cover crops are multifunctional tools that mitigate environmental impacts of agriculture, enhance resilience to weather extremes and suppress weeds and arthropod pests. Cover crops provide non‐crop food and habitat resources that attract natural enemies of pests, but their outcomes for pest management are less clear in regions where keystone mutualisms between red imported fire ants and aphids dominate. Here, we manipulate ant exclusion treatments and cover crop treatments (living mulches and terminated cover crops) that vary in food/habitat resources and examine responses of ants, aphids, other herbivores and predators in a cotton agroecosystem. Living mulches reduced both ants and aphids in the crop canopy by 97% and 93%, respectively, relative to bare soil treatments, and terminated cover crops reduced them as well by a lesser degree (~50%). Non‐aphid herbivores occurred in low densities system‐wide and increased in living mulches, whilst native predators had variable responses to cover crops and ant exclusion. Cover crops had no effect on prey removal in the crop canopy, but living mulches tripled rates of weed seed biocontrol, relative to bare soils. Cover crops elicited a shift in fire ant foraging from cotton foliage downward to the soil‐surface, preventing competitive exclusion by keystone ant/aphid mutualists that dominate crop monocultures. Cover crops altered the system‐wide impacts of fire ants: reducing ecosystem disservices (i.e. aphid tending) and enhancing ecosystem services (i.e. weed seed biocontrol). Simple Summary: Eusocial insects maintain hygiene in their nests with cleaning behaviours. One such behaviour is the disposal of refuse material, food waste, dead nestmate bodies, and other waste, outside the nest. This study on the waste disposal behaviour of Central Australian red honey-pot ants, Melophorus bagoti, provides valuable insights into the significance of learning in waste disposal. Naive ants improved over five consecutive runs in waste dumping, running straighter paths with less scanning. The observed differences between experienced and naive ants in waste dumping imply that learning contributes to more streamlined and less time-consuming waste management. In addition, dumping ants established sector fidelity in the consecutive runs, heading mostly in the same general direction on each dumping trip. This behaviour reduces the amount of navigational expertise that the dumper has to acquire. Learning in individuals thus helps an ant colony to cope with not only navigational challenges in foraging, which have been well studied in this and other desert ant species, but also with other demands of living in a harsh desert habitat. The Central Australian red honey-pot ant Melophorus bagoti maintains non-cryptic ground-nesting colonies in the semi-desert habitat, performing all the activities outside the nest during the hottest periods of summer days. These ants rely on path integration and view-based cues for navigation. They manage waste by taking out unwanted food, dead nestmates, and some other wastes, typically depositing such items at distances > 5 m from the nest entrance, a process called dumping. We found that over multiple runs, dumpers headed in the same general direction, showing sector fidelity. Experienced ants dumped waste more efficiently than naive ants. Naive individuals, lacking prior exposure to the outdoor environment around the nest, exhibited much scanning and meandering during waste disposal. In contrast, experienced ants dumped waste with straighter paths and a notable absence of scanning behaviour. Furthermore, experienced dumpers deposited waste at a greater distance from the nest compared to their naive counterparts. We also investigated the navigational knowledge of naive and experienced dumpers by displacing them 2 m away from the nest. Naive dumpers were not oriented towards the nest in their initial trajectory at any of the 2 m test locations, whereas experienced dumpers were oriented towards the nest at all test locations. Naive dumpers were nest-oriented as a group, however, at the test location nearest to where they dumped their waste. These differences suggest that in red honey ants, learning supports waste disposal, with dumping being refined through experience. Simple Summary: The red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta Buren poses a significant threat to biodiversity, agriculture, and public health in its introduced ranges. Chemicals are the main methods for S. invicta control. To explore more active ingredients for fire ant control, the toxicity and horizontal transfer effects of sulfoxaflor, triflumezopyrim, and flupyradifurone baits against S. invicta were determined and their field effects were assessed. Sulfoxaflor, flupyradifurone, and triflumezopyrim did not have affect the feeding behavior of the fire ants. However, they significantly reduced the climbing, walking, and arrest abilities of the fire ant workers after 10 days of treatment, and their toxicities were horizontally transferred from workers to alates or larvae. Specifically, the field trials showed that sulfoxaflor and triflumezopyrim at 0.05% concentration were the most effective in exterminating fire ants. The mortality rates of the mounds on Day 28 were 81.21% and 84.44% in 1.5- and 2.0-times 0.05% sulfoxaflor-treated plots, and the mortality rates of the mounds on Day 28 were 83.51% and 82.50% in 1.5- and 2.0-times 0.05% triflumezopyrim-treated plots. The red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is native to South America; however, its introduction to other countries has caused serious biodiversity, agricultural, and public health problems. As toxic bait is an effective method to control fire ant populations, the aim of this study was to determine the most effective concentration of sulfoxaflor, flupyradifurone, and triflumezopyrim as ingredients for baits against S. invicta under laboratory and field conditions. Sulfoxaflor, flupyradifurone, and triflumezopyrim had no effect on the feeding behavior of the fire ants. However, they significantly reduced the climbing, walking, and arrest abilities of the fire ant workers after 10 days of treatment, and insecticides were horizontally transferred from workers to alates or larvae. Fire is a major disturbance affecting ecosystems globally, but its impact on mutualisms has received minimal attention. Here, we use a long-term field experiment to investigate the impact of different fire regimes on globally important ant–honeydew and ant–extrafloral nectar (EFN) mutualistic interactions in an Australian tropical savanna. These interactions provide ants with a key energy source, while their plant and hemipteran hosts receive protection services. We examined ant interactions on species of Eucalyptus (lacking EFNs) and Acacia (with EFNs) in three replicate plots each of burning every 2 and 3 years early in the dry season, burning late in the dry season every 2 years, and unburnt for > 25 years. The proportions of plants with ant–honeydew interactions in Acacia (44.6%) and Eucalyptus (36.3%) were double those of Acacia plants with ant–EFN interactions (18.9%). The most common ants, representing 85% of all interactions, were behaviourally dominant species of Oecophylla, Iridomyrmex and Papyrius. Fire promoted the incidence of ant interactions, especially those involving EFNs on Acacia, which occurred on only 3% of plants in unburnt plots compared with 24% in frequently burnt plots. Fire also promoted the relative incidence of behaviourally dominant ants, which are considered the highest quality mutualists. Contrary to expectations, frequent fire did not result in a switching of behaviourally dominant ant partners from forest-adapted Oecophylla to arid-adapted Iridomyrmex. Our findings that frequent fire increases ant interactions mediated by honeydew and extrafloral nectar, and promotes the quality of ant mutualists, have important implications for protective services provided by ants in highly fire-prone ecosystems. Consumers exert top-down controls on dryland ecosystem function, but recent increases in fire activity may alter consumer communities in post-fire environments. Native consumers, including ants and rodents, likely have critical roles in defining post-fire plant community assembly and resilience to biological invasions. This study aimed to understand how western harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis) that form mounds and large vegetation-free disks that significantly influence plant community structure in the Great Basin Desert respond to fire and rodent community abundance. We tested this by installing treatment plots that excluded or allowed rodents and were burned or unburned in a full factorial design. We measured ant disk and mound size and density in each experimental plot. Fire increased ant mound density by 126% compared to unburned plots. Rodent presence decreased mound density by 59%, mound diameter by 13%, and mound height by 166%. We also show an interaction where the adverse effects of rodents on ant disk density were greater in burned than in unburned plots. The results suggest that booms in rodent populations are likely to have suppressive effects on ant mound and disk formation in native shrublands but that harvester ants may be released from rodent competition with the emergence of invasive grass-fire cycles. We attempt to determine the effect of the dietary switch from a native to non‐native prey on the gut microbiota in the predaceous ladybird Harmonia axyridis larvae and adults and examine how the dietary effect may vary across generations. We fed H. axyridis with different diets, native aphid Megoura japonica (Matsumura) versus non‐native mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley), for 5 generations and sequenced microbes in the gut of the 3rd instar larvae and adults of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th generations. In addition, we identified microbes in M. japonica and P. solenopsis. The 2 prey species differed in microbial community as measured by abundances of prevalent microbial genera and diversity. In H. axyridis, abundances of some prevalent microbial genera differed between the 2 diets in the 1st and 3rd generations, but the difference disappeared in the 5th generation; this tendency is more obvious in adults than in larvae. Overall, gut microbial assemblages became gradually cohesive over generations. Microbial diversity differed between diets in the 1st and 3rd generations but became similar in the 5th generation. Major prevalent gut microbial genera are predicted to be associated with metabolic functions of H. axyridis and associated genera are more abundant for consuming the mealybug than the aphid. Our findings from this study suggest that the gut microbiota in H. axyridis is flexible in response to the dietary switch, but tends toward homogeneity in microbial composition over generations. Fire is a powerful tool for conservation management at a landscape scale, but a rigorous evidence base is often lacking for understanding its impacts on biodiversity in different biomes. Fire‐induced changes to habitat openness have been identified as an underlying driver of responses of faunal communities, including for ants. However, most studies of the impacts of fire on ant communities consider only epigeic (foraging on the soil surface) species, which may not reflect the responses of species inhabiting other vertical strata. Here, we examine how the responses of ant communities vary among vertical strata in a highly fire‐prone biome. We use a long‐term field experiment to quantify the effects of fire on the abundance, richness, and composition of ant assemblages of four vertical strata (subterranean, leaf litter, epigeic, and arboreal) in an Australian tropical savanna. We first document the extent to which each stratum harbors distinct assemblages. We then assess how the assemblage of each stratum responds to three fire‐related predictors: fire frequency, fire activity, and vegetation cover. Each stratum harbored a distinct ant assemblage and showed different responses to fire. Leaf litter and epigeic ants were most sensitive to fire because it directly affects their microhabitats, but they showed contrasting negative and positive responses, respectively. Subterranean ants were the least sensitive because of the insulating effects of soil. Our results show that co‐occurring species of the same taxonomic group differ in the strength and direction of their response to fire depending on the stratum they inhabit. Vitellogenin (Vg) has been recognized as a co‐opted gene involved in social colonies where it is associated with reproduction in the queen and task transitions in workers. The Solenopsis invicta genome harbours four Vg genes, Vg1, Vg2, Vg3 and Vg4, and this study explored the regional expression of these genes in the brain and head of the worker caste in different subcaste and social contexts. Transcriptomic analyses of the worker brain while in the presence or absence of brood revealed differential expression of genes involved with social behaviours. Among these, we found higher expression of Vg2 and Vg3 in the brains of workers in the absence of brood. The influence of brood on expression of Vg between worker castes was also investigated. RT‐qPCR revealed higher expression of Vg in the head of workers in the absence of brood. Further studies demonstrated that Vg was also differentially expressed in the heads of workers conducting specific tasks and differing between subcastes. Nurses maintained higher Vg expression than foragers. We conclude worker Vg expression may be linked to the brood and/or nutritional state. Ants are vital ecosystem engineers that can influence soil properties, subsequent soil processes, and associated biota via underground nest construction. Harvester ants consume seeds and are often found in arid areas. They frequently alter the soil chemistry and bulk density of the soils in and around their nest sites. Many species of harvester ants also intentionally remove vegetation around their nest openings, which creates cones or discs of bare soil that may further alter soil temperatures. However, much of the work to study the impacts of harvester ants on soil properties has occurred in shrubland and grassland settings rather than suburban environments. We aimed to determine if Pogonomyrmex barbatus (Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) nests in a suburban habitat in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas with similarly altered soil properties. First, we measured the disc size of the active nests to determine the changes and persistence of the colony. We then assessed the soil compaction and surface temperature along a gradient centered on the disc. We found that disc size did not increase throughout the two-year observation period and that nests with smaller discs were less likely to persist between years. While we did not observe any changes in the surface temperature across the gradient, we found significantly reduced soil compaction closer to the center of the disc. These data indicate that an increase in nest size increases the extent of soil impacted. The impacts of nests reduced soil compaction, particularly within a suburban landscape with precipitation run-off issues and a highly disturbed plant community should be addressed in future studies. Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley is a pest that poses a significant threat to agricultural crops, especially cotton, and is now widely distributed across many regions worldwide. In this study, we performed a meta-analysis on the collected experimental data and found that within the suitable temperature range, the survival rate of P. solenopsis increases with rising temperatures, indicating that climate plays a decisive role in its distribution. Using the MaxEnt model this study predicted that under three future climate scenarios (SSP1–2.6, SSP3–7.0, and SSP5–8.5), the distribution of P. solenopsis will expand and move towards higher latitudes. Climate change is the primary factor influencing changes in pest distribution. We conducted a meta-analysis of P. solenopsis, including seven independent studies covering 221 observation results, and examined the impact of temperature ranging from 18 °C to 39 °C on the developmental cycle of P. solenopsis. As the temperature rises, the development cycle of P. solenopsis gradually decreases. Additionally, by combining the MaxEnt model, we predicted the current and potential future distribution range of P. solenopsis. The results show that under future climate warming, the distribution area of P. solenopsis in China will expand. This research provides a theoretical basis for early monitoring and control of this pest's occurrence and spread. Therefore, the predictive results of this study will provide important information for managers in monitoring P. solenopsis and help them formulate relevant control strategies. This research aims to measure the nitrogen balance index (NBI) used in the evaluation of nitrogen (N) and chlorophyll (CHL), anthocyanin (ANTS), and flavonol (FLAV) contents of some cereal and legume microgreens. The experiment was established in the Fully Controlled Climate Room of Van Yuzuncu Yil University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Field Crops in OctoberNovember 2020. The plant materials used in the research were Bezostaja-1, Dogu-88, Palandoken and Ayyildiz wheat, Tarm-92, Cetin-2000, Larende and Kral-97 barley, Haskara, Dirilis, Kirklar, Kahraman and Faikbey oats, Arifiye maize, Uzbek and Sazak lentils. Arda chickpea, Goynuk bean, Mung bean, black chickpea, Amazon cowpea, Lutfibey sainfoin, Bilensoy-80 alfalfa, and Dadas red clover including 14 cereal and 10 legume varieties. The seeds planted in the planting medium consisting of the mixture prepared in plastic chalets with a 1331olüme of 500 cc were taken to a fully controlled climate room and microgreens were obtained by applying 50-60% humidity, 21 ± 2/17 ± 2 °C and 16/8 light/dark period, and microgreens were obtained in cereals and legumes. Polyphenolic measurements were taken when the microgreens were 7-9 days old and when sprouts of the forage legumes group were 20-21 days old. Measurements were performed in triplicate with the Dualex+ 4 Scientific (FORCE-A, Orsay, France) device. Statistical analysis of the measurements was carried out according to the Randomized Parcels Trial Design. According to the measurement results, the highest contents based on varieties were determined in Lutfibey sainfoin for NBI (106.533±10.68 mg/g), for CHL in Arda chickpea (41.3 ±2.63 µg/cm²), for ANTS in Dadas red clover (0.08 ±0.01 dualex index) and FLAV in Amazon cowpea (0.746 ±0.03 dualex index). According to group-based averages, the highest values were determined for NBI in forage legumes (86.844 mg/g), for CHL in barley (31.14 µg/cm²) and oats, edible cereal legumes and forage legumes in the same group, for ANTS in forage legumes (0.053 dualex index) and wheat and oats in the same group, for FLAV in edible cereal legumes (0.56 dualex index) and oat in the same group. The study concluded that cereal and legume microgreens have polyphenolic-rich contents. The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), is one of the most important coffee pests, and is present in almost all countries producing this crop, causing annual losses of US$350 million. Natural factors regulate H. hampei populations in coffee crops. Ecological life table analysis is a robust tool that allows the estimation of the mortality caused by these factors. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine the critical stage and the key mortality factors affecting H. hampei in the field. Data for constructing life tables were collected over 2 years in six coffee plantations in the regions of Paula Cândido and Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The average mortality of H. hampei was 75.34% ± 5.85%. The mortality at each developmental stage was 24.32% ± 2.83% (eggs), 7.29% ± 1.01% (first instar), 11.58% ± 1.46% (second instar), 9.68% ± 1.10% (third instar), 7.45% ± 1.01% (pupa), and 15.02% ± 1.29% (adult; n = 124). The mortality factors observed and quantified in this study were parasitism by Prorops nasuta (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), predation by ants (Crematogaster spp., Pheidole spp. and Solenopsis spp.), physiological disorders and fungal infection by Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae. The critical mortality stage of H. hampei was the adult stage. The key factors for mortality of H. hampei adults were predatory ants, followed by B. bassiana and malformations (these insects had deformities in the head, wings, legs, or abdomen). This information is essential to conserve the activities of natural enemies and, thus maintain H. hampei natural mortality factors in coffee plantations, reducing damage to the crops and the need for excessive insecticide interventions. Noma horses are native Japanese horses. Health checkups revealed that many Noma horses developed dermatitis during summer, which subsided in winter. Seasonal development and signs of itching, suggestive of allergic dermatitis, were observed. In this study, allergen-specific IgE was measured using blood samples collected from 15 Noma horses in summer and winter to identify allergens highly associated with dermatitis. The presence of dermatitis in the subject individuals was recorded during blood sample collection. White blood cell and eosinophil counts, serum total IgE concentration, and serum allergen-specific IgE units (ARUs) were measured. White blood cell and eosinophil counts were significantly higher in horses with dermatitis in summer compared to winter. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in serum total IgE concentration regardless of the presence of dermatitis or the season. Horses with dermatitis in summer showed higher ARUs derived from red ants, horseflies, biting midges, cockroaches, deerflies, and mosquitoes than those in winter. These ARUs were positively correlated with white blood cell and eosinophil counts. The factor analysis results suggested that sensitization to some insects, such as mosquitoes and deerflies, may be a cause of dermatitis. Twelve encyrtid species viz. Agarwalencyrtus citri (Agarwal), Alamella flava Agarwal, Anomalicornia tenuicornis Mercet, Cryptanusia ajmerensis (Fatma & Shafee), Yasumatsuiola orientalis (Trjapitzin), Ethoris dahmsi Noyes and Hayat, Hemileucoceras longicornis Hayat, Hesperencyrtus gordhi (Fatma & Shafee), Monstranusia antennata (Narayanan), Paratetracnemoidea malenotti, (Mercet), Pentelicus depunctatus Manickavasagam & Chaitanya and Pentelicus punctatus Manickavasagam & Chaitanya are newly recorded from different states of India. From the present work, Anaesius hayati reared from an unidentified mealybug from an unknown weed, Gentakola trifasciata reared from Maconellicoccus hirsutus, Ooencyrtus penchants reared from an unidentified diaspidid scale on cotton and O. segestes reared from unidentified Heteroptera eggs from citrus and pomegranate were first host records and Anaesius advena reared from unidentified bug egg from cocoa, Prochiloneurus pulchellus and P. aegyptiacus reared from Phenacoccus solenopsis, Metaphycus sp. reared from mango galls and Proleurocerus montanus reared from unidentified mealybug on unknown weed were additional new host records. A long-term study of a population of desert seed-eating ant colonies of the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus, in New Mexico, USA, shows that a colony can live for 20–30 years—the lifespan of its founding queen. A colony's collective behaviour shifts in the course of its life history. These changes, generated by social interactions within the colony, adjust the behaviour of the colony as it grows older and larger, in response to its environment and neighbouring colonies. A worker lives only a year and performs different tasks as it ages, in response to interactions with other workers and the local surroundings. A colony's behaviour changes—becoming more stable and consistent—as the colony grows older, with more ants to participate in social interactions. A neighbourhood of colonies, often of similar age, grows old together. Colonies differ in how they regulate foraging behaviour collectively to manage water loss. These differences influence how foragers of neighbouring colonies partition foraging area. In a harsh but stable environment, the gradual behavioural shifts over a colony's lifespan allow it to adjust to slow changes in the composition of its neighbourhood and in environmental conditions. Paternal genome elimination (PGE) is an intriguing but poorly understood reproductive strategy in which females are typically diploid, but males lose paternal genomes. Paternal genome heterochromatin (PGH) occurs in arthropods with germline PGE, such as the mealybug, coffee borer beetles, and booklice. Here, we present evidence that PGH initially occurs during early embryo development at around 15 h post-mating (hpm) in the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley. Transcriptome analysis followed by qPCR validation indicated that six histone lysine methyltransferase (KMT) genes are predominantly expressed in adult females. We knocked down these five genes through dsRNA microinjection. We found that downregulation of two KMT genes, PsEZH2-X1 and PsEHMT1, resulted in a decrease of heterochromatin-related methylations, including H3K27me1, H3K27me3, and H3K9me3 in the ovaries, fewer PGH male embryos, and reduced male offspring. For further confirmation, we obtained two strains of transgenic tobacco highly expressing dsRNA targeting PsEZH2-X1 and PsEHMT1, respectively. Similarly, fewer PGH embryos and fewer male offspring were observed when feeding on these transgenic tobacco plants. Overall, we present evidence that PsEZH2-X1 and PsEHMT1 have essential roles in male embryo survival by regulating PGH formation in cotton mealybugs. Mealybugs of the genus Phenacoccus attack a wide variety of crops, fruits, vegetables, ornamentals and weeds but cotton is the prime target. In current investigations, two trials were carried out under semi-field and field conditions for two consecutive years to investigate the compatibility of native predators, Chrysoperla carnea larvae and adults of Brumus suturalis and the exotic predator Cryptolaemus montrouzieri with neem oil for the control of Phenacoccus solenopsis during 2018–2019 and 2019–2020. The assessments were based on mealybug control (scale 0–9) and the percent recovery of predators. Both native predators, C. carnea and B. suturalis showed better control of the mealybug under semi-field and field conditions over the control and were also recovered at the end of the trials during both the study years which proved the conservation and colonization capability of the predator to local conditions. In contrast, the exotic predator, C. montrouzieri proved to be the most efficient predator of P. solenopsis under semi-field conditions, however, it failed to establish under field conditions and control the mealybug populations. No recoveries were made of the predator in either of the treatments under field conditions. The maximum reduction in the population of mealybug was noticed in the insecticide-treated plants. The present study showed that the application of neem oil followed by the release of C. carnea larvae and B. suturalis adults can be swapped to synthetic insecticides for the safer management of mealybug. Background: Anaphylaxis represents the most severe end of the spectrum of allergic reactions. Frequent elicitors of anaphylaxis are insects, foods, and drugs. This paper summarizes recent development with regard to emerging and novel elicitors of anaphylaxis. Summary: Food allergens on the rise include pulses (like pea, chickpea), seeds (hemp, chia), nuts (cashew), pseudograins (buckwheat, quinoa), fruits, and microalgae. Novel foods are foods that were not consumed to any significant extent in the European Union before May 1997, which includes four edible insects (mealworm, migratory locust, house cricket, and buffalo worm). Recent investigations have pointed out the risk of anaphylaxis associated with the consumption of yellow mealworm for people allergic to shellfish and house dust mites. In Europe, fire ants (mostly Solenopsis invicta) and Vespa velutina nigrithorax represent invasive species, which account for increasing numbers of anaphylactic reactions. The rafting behaviour of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, in response to flooding events is well documented, although studies generally have focussed on the mechanisms of raft assembly and the behaviour of the raft's occupants. Flooding as a means of dispersal of S. invicta is frequently mentioned in the literature, although there are few data on the distances travelled or how effective it is compared to natural flight. In Australia, S. invicta is a priority invasive species with a national eradication program operating for 23 years, focussed on the population in southeast Queensland, which currently encompasses more than 700 000 ha. Flooding presents a risk to the success of the program through extending the infestation area or recolonising successfully treated areas. We used the program's extensive spatiotemporal dataset of known fire ant colony locations to assess the effects of two significant flood events on the dispersal or displacement of S. invicta in Queensland. Results indicated that flooding did not spread S. invicta beyond the known boundaries of infestation but contributed to localised spread, particularly for sites with known polygyne infestations. This situation could change if the ant spreads to new river catchments. The cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is a significant economic pest with a global distribution. Despite the increasing volume of literature on mitochondrial genome sequencing, complete mitochondrial genome sequences have not been reported for P. solenopsis yet. Here, we assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of P. solenopsis using high throughput DNA sequencing technology. The genome is 14,831 bp in length and is comprised of 37 genes: 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The total length of all PCGs is 9,678 bp, accounting for 65.2% of the overall mitogenome. Among the PCGs, atp8 is the smallest gene (99 bp) and nad5 is the largest (1,593 bp). Of the 13 PCGs, seven (nad3, cox3, atp6, atp8, cox2, cox1, nad2) are encoded on the majority strand (J-strand), while six (nad1, nad6, cob, nad4L, nad4, nad5) are on the minority strand (N-strand). The analysis revealed a predominant A+T base composition, making up 90.3% of the total genome. However, the non-coding regulatory control region (CR) is missing due to the non-overlapping endpoints of the linear assembly. Urban ecosystems are areas subject to constant changes due to human activities, characterized by spatial heterogeneity and temporal dynamics, which translates into disorder and reduction of biodiversity. Diversity is lower in urban and agroecosystems than in conserved ecosystems, transition zones become highly diverse due to the complexity of vegetation and opportunities as a new environment. Ants can adapt to urban environments, they tend to be generalist, dominant and with aggressive behavior, these environments have a greater number of introduced species. These organisms have been little studied in urban environments despite their importance and interactions they have with other organisms. In order to know the species of ants in parks of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Zone, 13 parks of Agencia Metropolitana de Bosques Urbanos were selected, one visit was made to each park between February and July 2021. Six points were marked in each park, four baits were placed in each point (two with tuna and two with walnut) and two hours of manual collection were carried out in the morning, from 9:00 to 11:00 am. The material was taken to the laboratory where it was separated and determined and deposited in the Colección Entomológica of Cento de Estudios en Zoología of the Universidad de Guadalajara. An annotated checklist of the ant species found was prepared. 17,677 individuals belonging to 35 species were collected; of which 26 are native species and nine are introduced species. Eight species of ant were found in all the parks, three species were exclusive to only one park. The most diverse park had 26 species, and the least diversity were two parks, with 17 species each one. Paratrechina longicornis was the most abundant species, while Hypoponera opaciceps, Solenopsis subterranea and Strumigenys louisianae were the least abundant species with only one individual each one. Cotton agroecosystems are under serious threat from the cotton mealybug (Phenacoccus solenopsis). This study examines the host plants, prevalence, damage capacity, and control practices of P. solenopsis infestations in the area. Based on data of field surveys and literature reviews, we study the biology, ecology, and resistance of the insecticide P. solenopsis, and the effects of invasive mealybug species on agricultural crops. In addition, the life history traits and development of P. solenopsis on different host plants are discussed, presenting the importance of integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. The research highlights the critical role of monitoring techniques like migrant traps and quantitative sampling in forecasting and controlling infestations of P. solenopsis. Through amalgamation of results from different sources, this research adds to our knowledge on the dynamics of P. solenopsis populations and provides directions on sustainable pest management in cotton agroecosystems. Social organization, dispersal and fecundity coevolve, but whether they are genetically linked remains little known. Supergenes are prime candidates for coupling adaptive traits and mediating sex-specific trade-offs. Here, we test whether a supergene that controls social structure in Formica selysi also influences dispersal-related traits and fecundity within each sex. In this ant species, single-queen colonies contain only the ancestral supergene haplotype M and produce MM queens and M males, while multi-queen colonies contain the derived haplotype P and produce MP queens, PP queens and P males. By combining multiple experiments, we show that the M haplotype induces phenotypes with higher dispersal potential and higher fecundity in both sexes. Specifically, MM queens, MP queens and M males are more aerodynamic and more fecund than PP queens and P males, respectively. Differences between MP and PP queens from the same colonies reveal a direct genetic effect of the supergene on dispersal-related traits and fecundity. The derived haplotype P, associated with multi-queen colonies, produces queens and males with reduced dispersal abilities and lower fecundity. More broadly, similarities between the Formica and Solenopsis systems reveal that supergenes play a major role in linking behavioural, morphological and physiological traits associated with intraspecific social polymorphisms. The Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) and the little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) are among the top 100 invasive alien species globally, causing significant ecological and economic harm. Therefore, it is crucial to study their potential geographic distribution worldwide. This study aimed to predict their global distribution under current and future climate conditions. We used distribution data from various sources, including CABI, GBIF, and PIAKey, and key climate variables selected from 19 environmental factors to model their potential geographic distribution using MaxEnt. The AUC values were 0.925 and 0.937 for L. humile and W. auropunctata , respectively, indicating good predictive performance. Suitable areas for L. humile were mainly in southern North America, northern South America, Europe, central Asia, southern Oceania, and parts of Africa, while W. auropunctata suitable areas were mostly in southern North America, most of South America, a small part of Europe, southern Asia, central Africa, and some parts of Oceania. Under climate change scenario, suitable areas for L. humile increased, while highly suitable areas for W. auropunctata decreased. The top four countries with the largest areas of overlapping suitable habitat under current climate were Brazil, China, Australia, and Argentina, while under future SSP585 climate scenario, the top four countries were Brazil, China, Indonesia, and Argentina. Some countries, such as Estonia and Finland, will see an overlapping adaptation area under climate change. In an urbanized area of the Eastern district of Marbella, and infested with the little fire ant Wasmannia auropunctata, the apparent exclusion of other ant species is described. By using baits arranged in seven infested transects and in six transects on their periphery, 14 non-Wasmannia species (12 genera) were recorded in the outer zone, while only one non-Wasmannia species was recorded in the infested zone. The fall armyworm has emerged as a major invasive pest of maize in multiple regions of Africa and Asia, affecting the crop at different stages. Pesticides have been widely used to manage fall armyworm in maize, however, there is always a need to explore other management options, including biological control. The current study aimed to explore the occurrence of the biological control agents in maize field, along with the predatory activity of selected groups under lab conditions. For live observations of the predatory arthropods in the field, weekly observations were made from five different maize fields located in Multan. For estimating predatory potential, selected groups of predators were collected using hand picking method and released in the Petri dishes under laboratory conditions. Diversity indices including the Shannon's and Simpson's diversity indices, showed significant differences in diversity of predators across various months and sites. The abundance of arthropod predators was significantly higher during September, October, March, and April. During fall 2022, spiders, red ants and lady bird beetles showed higher abundance followed by rove beetles and black ants. During spring 2023, spiders showed the highest mean abundance followed by red ants, rove beetles and lady bird beetles. The laboratory predation experiments showed lady bird beetles as an effective predator against the 1st larval instar of fall armyworm, followed by spiders and black ants, respectively. A wide range of approaches has been used to manage the spread of invasive species, yet invaders continue to be a challenge to control. In some cases, management actions have no effect or may even inadvertently benefit the targeted invader. Here, we use the mid‐20th century management of the Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta, in the US as a motivating case study to explore the conditions under which such wasted management effort may occur. Introduced in approximately 1940, the fire ant spread widely through the southeast US and became a problematic pest. Historically, fire ants were managed with broad‐spectrum pesticides; unfortunately, these efforts were largely unsuccessful. One hypothesis suggests that, by also killing native ants, mass pesticide application reduced competitive burdens thereby enabling fire ants to invade more quickly than they would in the absence of management. We use a mechanistic competition model to demonstrate the landscape‐level effects of such management. We explicitly model the extent and location of pesticide applications, showing that the same pesticide application can have a positive, neutral, or negative effect on the progress of an invasion, depending on where it is applied on the landscape with respect to the invasion front. When designing management, the target species is often considered alone; however, this work suggests that leveraging existing biotic interactions, specifically competition with native species, can increase the efficacy of management. Our model not only highlights the potential unintended consequences of ignoring biotic interactions, but also provides a framework for developing spatially explicit management strategies that take advantage of these biotic interactions to work smarter, not harder. BACKGROUND: Given the chemical diversity within stink bugs scent glands, they can be convenient models for bioprospecting novel pest control products. Preliminary behaviour observations indicated that adult Mictis fuscipes stink bugs secrete liquid droplets when defending against Solenopsis invicta fire ants, killing them within minutes. Hence, this study aimed to analyse the chemical composition of the metathoracic scent gland secretions of M. fuscipes adults, as well as assess their biological activities against fire ants. RESULTS: Bioassaying fire ants against secretions of several local stink bugs confirmed that the defensive secretions of two Mictis species are significantly more lethal, where M. fuscipes was the most lethal. Volatiles chromatography analysis indicated the secretions of female and male M. fuscipes stink bugs contains 20 and 26 components, respectively, chiefly hexanoic acid and hexyl hexanoate. Five compounds were consistently present in the secretion of female adults: hexyl hexanoate, hexanoic acid, hexyl acetate, hexyl butyrate, and eugenol. These yielded a strong electrophysiological antennal (EAD) response from S. invicta workers, female alates and males, where hexyl acetate showed the strongest response. The combination of these five compounds proved strongly repellent to S. invicta. When tested singly, hexanoic acid, hexyl butyrate, hexyl hexanoate, and eugenol were repellent to S. invicta, but hexyl acetate seemed slightly attractive. Additionally, the same mixture of five components exhibited strong contact and fumigant toxicity towards S. invicta workers, eugenol being the strongest. Throughout succession, communities undergo structural shifts, which can alter the relative abundances of species and how they interact. It is frequently asserted that these alterations beget stability, i.e. that succession selects for communities better able to resist perturbations. Yet, whether and how alterations of network structure affect stability during succession in complex communities is rarely studied in natural ecosystems. Here, we explore how network attributes influence stability of different successional stages of a natural network: symbiotic arthropod communities forming food webs inside red wood ant nests. We determined the abundance of 16 functional groups within the symbiont community across 51 host nests in the beginning and end stages of succession. Nest age was the main driver of the compositional shifts: symbiont communities in old nests contained more even species abundance distributions and a greater proportion of specialists. Based on the abundance data, we reconstructed interaction matrices and food webs of the symbiont community for each nest. We showed that the enhanced community evenness in old nests leads to an augmented food web stability in all but the largest symbiont communities. Overall, this study demonstrates that succession begets stability in a natural ecological network by making the community more even. As red wood ant nests age, the arthropod symbiont communities they support undergo a successional shift. Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae), the cotton mealybug, is an invasive polyphagous species that has been extending its geographic range, posing a conspicuous threat to many Mediterranean crops of economic importance. These include three species of Solanaceae, namely Solanum lycopersicum L. (tomato), Solanum tuberosum L. (potato) and Solanum melongena L. (eggplant) all of which are economically important worldwide. In this study, we used age-stage two-sex life tables to investigate the suitability of these three plant species as hosts for P. solenopsis and to calculate pest fitness, life history parameters and population projection parameters. All tested host plants that were suitable for the pest and eggplant host plant induced a higher fecundity (276.50 ± 10.78 eggs/female), net reproductive rate (R0) (243.32 ± 15.83 offspring/female) and finite rate of increase (λ) (1.18 ± 0.0043 day−1) and more extended adult longevity (males: 6.50 ± 0.34 days and females: 24.15 ± 0.50 days). Population growth predictions over a period of 90 days of infestation, commencing with an initial population of 10 eggs showed that adult population size was 674,551 on tomato, 826,717 on potato and 355,139 on eggplant. Our data on plant host preference of P. solenopsis will aid the development of appropriate management strategies and achieve successful control of this invasive pest in key Mediterranean crop systems. Ladybird beetles Scymnus nubilus Mulsant, Scymnus interruptus (Goeze), and Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville are key contributors to biological control of some pests including Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley. This study explores their feeding preferences, functional response, and interference in controlled laboratory conditions. Feeding experiments, including both no-choice and free-choice tests, were conducted at temperatures ranging from 15 to 35°C fed on different developmental stages of P. solenopsis. The study analyzed the functional response with Holling's disc equation and assessed mutual interference among predators using the Hassell and Varley model. In the no-choice feeding tests, H. convergens adults exhibited the highest consumption at 26°C, with values of 46.0 1st instar nymphs, 40.9 2nd instar nymphs, and 34.9 adult females of P. solenopsis, followed by S. interruptus. Free-choice feeding tests also showed a preference for 26°C, with H. convergens consistently consuming the most prey at all stages, followed by S. interruptus. Functional response analysis revealed a type II functional response for three predators. Hippodamia convergens exhibited a significantly higher attack rate (1.0250 h−1) and a shorter handling time (0.0449 h) compared to the other species. Interference among predators was observed, with a progressive decline in prey consumption as predator density increased. Mutual interference constants (m) were calculated as 1.70, 1.74, and 1.77 for S. nubilus, S. interruptus, and H. convergens, respectively. As predator densities increased, searching efficiency declined. This suggest that H. convergens and S. interruptus adults at 26°C with a prey density of 40 can effectively contribute to sustainable P. solenopsis management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis, is a serious pest of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. The waxy coating on its body may hinder pesticide penetration, and the extensive use of pesticides is risky to humans and the environment. Considering these drawbacks, fermented plant extracts (FPEs) were explored for their potential use in controlling this pest in a more user and environmentally-friendly manner. FPEs derived from eleven plant materials were evaluated against P. solenopsis for their insecticidal activity, mealybug wax removal potential and phytotoxicity effect on H. rosa-sinensis. Five concentrations of FPE [5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% (w/v)] were prepared. Among the 11 FPEs, FPE derived from ficus, kaffir lime, and turmeric were effective in suppressing P. solenopsis with lethal concentration at 50% (LC50 value) less than 20% concentration. Although ficus FPE was the top performer in the insecticidal assay, it induced medium to very high levels of leaf damage after being treated with 15–25% concentration at 24 and 72 hr post-treatment. A low level of leaf damage was observed in treatment with turmeric and kaffir lime FPEs at 72 hr post-treatment. FPEs could remove wax from the body of P. solenopsis with no significant difference among them. Dynamic networks composed of constituents that break and reform bonds reversibly are ubiquitous in nature owing to their modular architectures that enable functions like energy dissipation, self-healing, and even activity. While bond breaking depends only on the current configuration of attachment in these networks, reattachment depends also on the proximity of constituents. Therefore, dynamic networks composed of macroscale constituents (not benefited by the secondary interactions cohering analogous networks composed of molecular-scale constituents) must rely on primary bonds for cohesion and self-repair. Toward understanding how such macroscale networks might adaptively achieve this, we explore the uniaxial tensile response of 2D rafts composed of interlinked fire ants (S. invicta). Through experiments and discrete numerical modeling, we find that ant rafts adaptively stabilize their bonded ant-to-ant interactions in response to tensile strains, indicating catch bond dynamics. Consequently, low-strain rates that should theoretically induce creep mechanics of these rafts instead induce elastic-like response. Our results suggest that this forcestabilization delays dissolution of the rafts and improves toughness. Nevertheless, above 35% strain low cohesion and stress localization cause nucleation and growth of voids whose coalescence patterns result from force-stabilization. These voids mitigate structural repair until initial raft densities are restored and ants can reconnect across defects. However mechanical recovery of ant rafts during cyclic loading suggests that--even upon reinstatement of initial densities--ants exhibit slower repair kinetics if they were recently loaded at faster strain rates. Preservation of undeveloped land near urban areas is a common conservation practice. However, ecological processes may still be affected by adjacent anthropogenic activities. Ground-dwelling arthropods are a diverse group of organisms that are critical to ecological processes such as nutrient cycling, which are sensitive to anthropogenic activities. Here, we study arthropod dynamics in a preserve located in a heavily urbanized part of the Sonoran Desert, Arizona, U.S.. We compared arthropod biodiversity and community composition at ten locations, four paired sites representing the urban edge and one pair in the Preserve interior. In total, we captured and identified 25,477 arthropod individuals belonging to 287 lowest practical taxa (LPT) over eight years of sampling. This included 192 LPTs shared between interior and edge sites, with 44 LPTs occurring exclusively in interior sites and 48 LPTs occurring exclusively in edge sites. We found two site pairs had higher arthropod richness on the preserve interior, but results for evenness were mixed among site pairs. Compositionally, the interior and edge sites were more than 40% dissimilar, driven by species turnover. Importantly, we found that some differences were only apparent seasonally; for example edge sites had more fire ants than interior sites only during the summer. We also found that temperature and precipitation were strong predictors of arthropod composition. Our study highlights that climate can interact with urban edge effects on arthropod biodiversity. Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, 1898 (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), commonly known as the cotton mealybug or solenopsis mealybug, is a highly polyphagous species. This paper provides the first report of this species in Greece. It was detected in high numbers on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants cultivated in a greenhouse in the region of Mirtos, close to the city of Ierapetra in the Southeast part of the island of Crete. The species identification was carried out using morphological and molecular analyses. The fact that P. solenopsis can be transferred easily via trade of live plant material, in combination with its ability to affect many different hosts causing severe damage, constitutes an increasing threat to Greek cultivation and especially to horticultural and vegetable crops. The insect gustatory system participates in identifying potential food sources and avoiding toxic compounds. During this process, gustatory receptors (GRs) recognize feeding stimulant and deterrent compounds. However, the GRs involved in recognizing stimulant and deterrent compounds in the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, remain unknown. Therefore, we conducted a study on the genes SinvGR1, SinvGR32b, and SinvGR28a to investigate the roles of GRs in detecting feeding stimulant and deterrent compounds. In this current study, we found that sucrose and fructose are feeding stimulants and the bitter compound quinine is a feeding deterrent. The fire ant workers showed significant behavior changes to avoid the bitter taste in feeding stimulant compounds. Reverse transcription quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction results from developmental stages showed that the SinvGR1, SinvGR32b, and SinvGR28a genes were highly expressed in fire ant workers. Tissue‐specific expression profiles indicated that SinvGR1, SinvGR32b, and SinvGR28a were specifically expressed in the antennae and foreleg tarsi of workers, whereas SinvGR32b gene transcripts were also highly accumulated in the male antennae. Furthermore, the silencing of SinvGR1 or SinvGR32b alone and the co‐silencing of both genes disrupted worker stimulation and feeding on sucrose and fructose. The results also showed that SinvGR28a is required for avoiding quinine, as workers with knockdown of the SinvGR28a gene failed to avoid and fed on quinine. This study first identified stimulant and deterrent compounds of fire ant workers and then the GRs involved in the taste recognition of these compounds. Ant rescue behaviour belongs to the most interesting subcategories of prosocial and altruistic behaviour encountered in the animal world. Several studies suggested that ants are able to identify what exactly restrains the movements of another individual and to direct their rescue behaviour precisely to that object. To shed more light on the question of how precise the identification of the source of restraint of another ant is, we investigated rescue behaviour of red wood ant Formica polyctena workers, using a new version of an artificial snare bioassay in which a nestmate victim bore two wire loops on its body, one (acting as a snare) placed on its petiole and an additional one on its leg. The tested ants did not preferentially direct their rescue behaviour towards the snare. Moreover, the overall strategy adopted by the most active rescuers was not limited to precisely targeted rescue attempts directed towards the snare, but consisted of frequent switching between various subcategories of rescue behaviour. These findings highlight the importance of precise identification of cognitive processes and overall behavioural strategies for better understanding of causal factors underlying animal helping behaviour in light of new facts discovered by testing of various successive research hypotheses. Ants have been widely used as bioindicators of natural and disturbed environments. In Argentine Chaco Seco, ants represent an important part of the total biodiversity and fulfil various functions in forest ecosystems. With the aim of evaluating β diversity and identifying indicator ants, surveys were carried out in three types of implanted forests: Neltuma alba (mesquite), Eucalyptus tereticornis (eucalyptus) and mixed forests without intervention for 50 years, mainly composed of Ceiba speciosa and Phoenix canariensis, located at the Fernández Experimental Station of the Catholic University of Santiago del Estero. The samplings were carried out in spring, summer and autumn, between 2019 and 2022, using pitfall traps that remained active for 24 h. The abundance and composition of Formicidae at each site and season were evaluated using the Jaccard similarity index and generalized linear mixed models. A total of 7366 individuals grouped into 28 species belonging to 6 Formicidae subfamilies were identified. Some species were present at all sites and seasons, with Solenopsis saevissima, Camponotus mus and Pheidole bergii being the most abundant in the mesquite, eucalyptus and mixed stands, respectively. In addition, three exclusive species of N. alba, two of E. tereticornis and one of the mixed stand were identified. Furthermore, it was observed that the myrmecological composition varied seasonally, mainly during autumn. These results demonstrate that due to the characteristics of each site, representative groups of ants can be found for each that could be used as indicators of each type of environment and that the temporal variation of the communities is favored by the diversification of the habitats, which offer different resources during each season of the year, increasing the turnover rate. One of the key reasons for the poor performance of natural enemies of honeydew-producing insect pests is mutualism between ants and some aphid species. The findings demonstrated that red wood ant, Formica rufa Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) had a deleterious impact on different biological parameters of the lady beetle, Hippodamia variegata Goeze (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). H. variegata laid far fewer eggs in ant-tended aphid colonies, laying nearly 2.5 times more eggs in ant absence. Ants antennated and bit the lady beetle eggs, resulting in significantly low egg hatching of 66 per cent over 85 per cent in ant absent treatments. The presence of ants significantly reduced the development of all larval instars. The highest reduction was found in the fourth larval instar (31.33% reduction), and the lowest in the first larval instar (20% reduction). Later larval instars were more aggressively attacked by ants than earlier instars. The first and second larval instars stopped their feeding and movement in response to ant aggression. The third and fourth larval instars modified their mobility, resulting in increased ant aggression towards them. Adult lady beetles were shown to be more vulnerable to ant attacks than larvae. However, H. variegata adults demonstrated counterattacks in the form of diverse defensive reaction behaviours in response to F. rufa aggression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis, native to the USA, is a globally invasive quarantine pest. This pest has now spread to more than 43 countries and covered all continents except Antarctica, posing a serious threat to agricultural and forestry production, as well as biosecurity. The niche conservatism hypothesis states a tendency for species to maintain their original ecological niches in time and space and has been widely debated. In this study, based on the multidimensional hypervolume analysis and species distribution model, we identified the niche dynamics of this pest and further assessed its global invasion risk. The results indicated that the niche hypervolume in invasive ranges was significantly larger than that in native ranges, with 99.45% of the niche differentiation contributed by niche expansion rather than spatial replacement. Niche expansion was especially evident in Oceania and Eurasia. Compared to 2017, the current area of suitable habitats had increased significantly and this pest would expand northwards from the south in future climate change scenarios. The invasion risk in North Africa, northern China, areas along the Mediterranean, and northern Europe should not be ignored. As a globally invasive quarantine pest, the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis, is spreading rapidly, posing serious threats against agricultural and forestry production and biosecurity. In recent years, the niche conservatism hypothesis has been widely debated, which is particularly evident in invasive biology research. Identifying the niche dynamics of P. solenopsis, as well as assessing its global invasion risk, is of both theoretical and practical importance. Based on 462 occurrence points and 19 bioclimatic variables, we used n-dimensional hypervolume analysis to quantify the multidimensional climatic niche of this pest in both its native and invasive ranges. We examined niche conservatism and further optimized the MaxEnt model parameters to predict the global invasion risk of P. solenopsis under both current and future climate conditions. Our findings indicated that the niche hypervolume of this pest in invasive ranges was significantly larger than that in its native ranges, with 99.45% of the niche differentiation contributed by niche expansion, with the remaining less than 1% explained by space replacement. Niche expansion was most evident in Oceania and Eurasia. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.83) and true skill statistic (0.62) indicated the model's robust performance. The areas of suitable habitats for P. solenopsis are increasing significantly and the northward spread is obvious in future climate change scenarios. North Africa, northern China, Mediterranean regions, and northern Europe had an increased invasion risk of P. solenopsis. The role of facilitation in shaping natural communities has primarily been studied in the context of plant assemblages, while its relevance for mobile animals remains less understood. Our study investigates whether reciprocal interspecific facilitation may exist between fire ants (Solenopsis richteri) and cavies (Cavia aperea), two mobile animals, in the SW Atlantic coast brackish marshes. Field samples showed a spatial association between ant mounds and cavies, and that ants prefer to use cavy runways for movement within the marsh. Through experiments involving transplanting the dominant plant, cordgrass (Spartina densiflora), and manipulating cavy presence in areas with and without ant mounds, we observed that cavies forage extensively (and defecate more) near ant mounds. The ants actively remove cavy droppings in their mound vicinity. These ant activities and interactions with cavy droppings led to reduced moisture and organic content while increasing nitrate and phosphate levels in marsh sediment. Consequently, this enhanced plant growth, indirectly facilitating the cavies, which preferred consuming vegetation near ant mounds. These cascading indirect effects persisted over time; even four months after cavies left the marshes, transplanted plants near ant mounds remained larger and exhibited more leaf senescence when exposed to cavy herbivory. Therefore, the networks of positive interactions appear to generate simultaneous selection among species (populations), promoting coexistence within the community. Although complex, these reciprocal facilitative effects among mobile animals may be more common than currently believed and should be further studied to gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving species coexistence in natural communities. Sol g 2 is the major protein in Solenopsis geminata fire ant venom. It shares the highest sequence identity with Sol i 2 (S. invicta) and shares high structural homology with LmaPBP (pheromone-binding protein (PBP) from the cockroach Leucophaea maderae). We examined the specific Sol g 2 protein ligands from fire ant venom. The results revealed that the protein naturally formed complexes with hydrocarbons, including decane, undecane, dodecane, and tridecane, in aqueous venom solutions. Decane showed the highest affinity binding (Kd) with the recombinant Sol g 2.1 protein (rSol g 2.1). Surprisingly, the mixture of alkanes exhibited a higher binding affinity with the rSol g 2.1 protein compared to a single one, which is related to molecular docking simulations, revealing allosteric binding sites in the Sol g 2.1 protein model. In the trail-following bioassay, we observed that a mixture of the protein sol g 2.1 and hydrocarbons elicited S. geminata worker ants to follow trails for a longer time and distance compared to a mixture containing only hydrocarbons. This suggests that Sol g 2.1 protein may delay the evaporation of the hydrocarbons. Interestingly, the piperidine alkaloids extracted have the highest attraction to the ants. Therefore, the mixture of hydrocarbons and piperidines had a synergistic effect on the trail-following of ants when both were added to the protein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae) is an invasive sucking pest native to North America, has spread to Central America, and various Asian countries where it extensively damaging several agri-horticultural crops. Following invasion of this pest, several native as well as exotic natural enemies have been discovered and reported viz., Aenasius arizonensis (Girault), Allotropa phenacocca, Cheiloneurus sp., Bothriothorax sp., Marietta sp., and Chartocerus sp. etc., among which, A. phenacocca is one of such primary solitary endoparasitoid of P. solenopsis reported from China (Chen et al., Oriental Insects,45(2–3), 275–280, 2011). However, in the present study we report a morphologically similar species of Allotropa near phenacocca from India. The molecular analysis of the COI gene of this morphovariant (Accession number- OQ451869) showed 89.81% similarity with the closely allied A. phenacocca (Accession number- MT775809) from China. Morphometric and biological parameters of parasitoid revealed that the adult females were black in color and ranged in length from 0.74 to 1.17 mm. Antenna of female was 9 segmented; A7 and A8 extended and its average length was 0.45 ± 0.012 mm. Mesosoma is reticulate and densely setose. Adult males were also black in colour and measured 0.70 to 0.95 mm in length. During its lifespan, the female parasitized 26 to 113 mealybugs with a mean of 72 ± 8.51 and the average developmental period was 26.54 ± 0.67 days. This report document the newfound parasitoid of P. solenopsis, highlighting its potential for efficiently controlling cotton mealybug populations. Notably, this parasitoid exhibits a preference for targeting the early stages of mealybugs, thereby impeding their progression into the most destructive stages, namely the third instar and adult forms. Wasmannia auropunctata, the little fire ant, is an invasive pest threatening native biodiversity, agricultural and forestry production, and public health. In January 2022, wild populations of W. auropunctata were reported for the first time on the Chinese mainland. However, the stage and degree of W. auropunctata invasion in China are unclear. Therefore, assessing the risk of establishment and the potential impacts associated with this pest is crucial for preventing further spread. This study used the Bayesian additive regression trees (BARTs) model and global occurrence records to assess the potential distribution of W. auropunctata in southern China and the associated risk of invading urban, rural, agricultural, and forest lands. The results from our models indicate that: (1) coastal areas, southwest, and central areas are particularly suitable for W. auropunctata establishment; (2) temperature, clay content, mean normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), and urban area are important factors in the distribution of W. auropunctata; (3) the agricultural lands in the coastal areas and the Yunnan–Guangxi border, the urban and rural lands in the coastal areas, and grasslands in the southwest should prepare for possible W. auropunctata invasion; and (4) forest lands have the highest area at risk of W. auropunctata invasion in southern China. Red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) is a severe and highly destructive invasive species. It has invaded mainland China since 2004. Understanding the foraging behavior patterns of workers in different habitats and conditions can help to develop scientific prevention and control measures. In this study, we used bait traps to measure the foraging activity of workers in newly established fire ant nests in various habitats and time periods. The results showed that the presence or absence of vegetation cover was an important factor affecting the foraging activity of fire ant workers. In bare land habitats, the foraging range and number of fire ant workers were significantly different from those in habitats with vegetation cover. The analysis of the daily average activity patterns of fire ants showed that the number of workers in sweet potato fields showed a bimodal pattern. In contrast, those in bare land and sugarcane fields showed an unimodal pattern, and those in pineapple fields showed a fluctuating pattern. It is worth noting that the bimodal and unimodal peaks in sweet potato, bare land, and sugarcane fields all occurred at 10:00 and 16:00. Therefore, in natural environments, vegetation cover, and temperature are important factors affecting the foraging activity of fire ants.

Abstract Nonnative, invasive ants, and especially the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, are a widespread threat to ground‐nesting wildlife. In this paper I describe a method of controlling fire ants using hot water. The hot water approach was applied to reduce fire ant impacts on sea turtles and ground‐nesting songbirds and to demonstrate its utility in protection of different ground‐nesting species in different habitats. Fire ant controls using hot water provided 90% or greater control, significantly improving survival of both turtle and bird hatchlings, without the use of pesticides. The success of the method and the availability of necessary equipment shows that hot water control of fire ant populations should be considered as a tool for wildlife affected by fire ants and is useful for a wide variety of scenarios where fire ant controls are desirable or necessary. The method does require that 1) wildlife nest locations are known and that 2) nearby fire ant colonies can be found and treated with hot water. The method can be used as a complement to broadcast or bait‐station baiting strategies or as a stand‐alone method for managing fire ants.
