Abstract The high-pressure and high-temperature structural, mechanical, and dinamical stability of rhodium has been investigated via synchrotron X-ray diffraction using a resistively heated diamond anvil cell and density functional theory. The isothermal compression data have been fitted with a Rydberg-Vinet equation of state (EoS) with best-fitting parameters $$V_0$$ V 0 =55.046(16) Å $$^3$$ 3 , $$K_0$$ K 0 = 251(3) GPa, and $$K'_0$$ K 0 ′ = 5.7(2). The thermal equation of state has been determined based upon the data collected following four different isotherms and has been fitted to a Holland and Powell thermal equation-of-state model with $$\alpha _0=$$ α 0 = 3.36(7)x10 $$^{-5}$$ - 5 K $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . The measured equation of state and structural parameters have been compared to the results of ab initio simulations. The agreement between theory and experiments is generally quite good. The present results solve controversies between previous studies which reported values of the bulk modulus from 240 to 300 GPa.

Abstract Titanium diselenide (TiSe2) is a layered material that under a critical temperature of T c ≈ 200 K features a periodic modulation of the electron density, known as charge density wave (CDW), which finds applications in quantum information and emerging electronic devices. Here, we present first-principles calculations showing the suppression of the CDW via photoexcitation and consequent stabilization of the undistorted high-temperature phase, in agreement with experimental observations. Interestingly, the unfolded CDW melting is accompanied by a sizable reduction in the thermal conductivity, κ, of up to 25% and a large entropy increase of ~10 J K−1 kg−1. The significant κ variation is almost entirely originated from photoinduced changes in the phonon–phonon scattering processes involving a high-symmetry soft phonon mode. Our results open new possibilities in the design of devices for thermal management and phonon-based logic, and suggest original applications in the of context solid-state cooling.

Abstract Solid‐state methods for cooling and heating promise a sustainable alternative to current compression cycles of greenhouse gases and inefficient fuel‐burning heaters. Barocaloric effects (BCE) driven by hydrostatic pressure (p) are especially encouraging in terms of large adiabatic temperature changes (|ΔT| ≈ 10 K) and isothermal entropy changes (|ΔS| ≈ 100 J K−1 kg−1). However, BCE typically require large pressure shifts due to irreversibility issues, and sizeable |ΔT| and |ΔS| seldom are realized in a same material. Here, the existence of colossal and reversible BCE in LiCB11H12 is demonstrated near its order‐disorder phase transition at ≈380 K. Specifically, for Δp ≈ 0.23 (0.10) GPa, |ΔSrev| = 280 (200) J K−1 kg−1 and |ΔTrev| = 32 (10) K are measured, which individually rival with state‐of‐the‐art BCE figures. Furthermore, pressure shifts of the order of 0.1 GPa yield huge reversible barocaloric strengths of ≈2 J K−1 kg−1 MPa−1. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to quantify the role of lattice vibrations, molecular reorientations, and ion diffusion on the disclosed BCE. Interestingly, lattice vibrations are found to contribute the most to |ΔS| while the diffusion of lithium ions, despite adding up only slightly to the entropy change, is crucial in enabling the molecular order–disorder phase transition.

Abstract Due to its high energy efficiency and environmental friendliness, solid-state cooling based on the barocaloric (BC) effect represents a promising alternative to traditional refrigeration technologies relying on greenhouse gases. Plastic crystals displaying orientational order-disorder solid-solid phase transitions have emerged among the most gifted materials on which to realize the full potential of BC solid-state cooling. However, a comprehensive understanding of the atomistic mechanisms on which order-disorder BC effects are sustained is still missing, and rigorous and systematic methods for quantitatively evaluating and anticipating them have not been yet established. Here, we present a computational approach for the assessment and prediction of BC effects in orientationally disordered materials that relies on atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and emulates quasi-direct calorimetric BC measurements. Remarkably, the proposed computational approach allows for a precise determination of the partial contributions to the total entropy stemming from the vibrational and molecular orientational degrees of freedom. Our BC simulation method is applied on the technologically relevant material CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI), finding giant BC isothermal entropy changes (∣ΔS BC∣ ~ 10 J K−1 kg−1) under moderate pressure shifts of ~0.1 GPa. Intriguingly, our computational analysis of MAPI reveals that changes in the vibrational degrees of freedom of the molecular cations, not their reorientational motion, have a major influence on the entropy change that accompanies the order-disorder solid-solid phase transition.

Abstract Metal clusters supported on TiO2 are widely used in many photocatalytic applications, including pollution control and production of solar fuels. Besides high photoactivity, stability during the photoreaction is another essential quality of high-performance photocatalysts, however systematic studies on this attribute are absent for metal clusters supported on TiO2. Here we have studied, both experimentally and with first-principles simulation methods, the stability of Pt, Pd and Au clusters prepared by ball milling on nanoshaped anatase nanoparticles preferentially exposing {001} (plates) and {101} (bipyramids) facets during the photogeneration of hydrogen. It is found that Pt/TiO2 exhibits superior stability than Pd/TiO2 and Au/TiO2, and that {001} facet-based photocatalysts always are more stable than their {101} analogous regardless of the considered metal species. The loss of stability associated with cluster sintering, which is facilitated by the transfer of photoexcited carriers from the metal species to the neighbouring Ti and O atoms, most significantly and detrimentally affects the H2-evolution photoactivity.

Abstract Helium, the second most abundant element in the universe, exhibits an extremely large electronic band gap of about 20 eV at ambient pressures. While the metallization pressure of helium has been accurately determined, thus far little attention has been paid to the specific mechanisms driving the band-gap closure and electronic properties of this quantum crystal in the terapascal regime (1 TPa = 10 Mbar). Here, we employ density functional theory and many-body perturbation calculations to fill up this knowledge gap. It is found that prior to reaching metallicity helium becomes an excitonic insulator (EI), an exotic state of matter in which electrostatically bound electron-hole pairs may form spontaneously. Furthermore, we predict metallic helium to be a superconductor with a critical temperature of ≈ 20 K just above its metallization pressure and of ≈ 70 K at 100 TPa. These unforeseen phenomena may be critical for improving our fundamental understanding and modeling of celestial bodies.

Abstract Perovskite oxides offer tremendous potential for applications in information storage and energy conversion, owing to a subtle interplay between their spin, charge, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, we further expand the possible range of perovskite oxides operation towards the fields of thermal management and thermal computing by exploiting an exceptional synergy between different ferroic orders. We propose dynamical control of the heat flow in a distinctive family of perovskite oxides obtained via the application of small electric (~10 kV/cm) and/or magnetic (~1 T) fields. Based on first-principles simulations, we predict a relative heat conductivity variation of ~100% in SrMnO3 thin films near room temperature resulting from a phase transition that involves huge changes in both the magnetization and electric polarization. The disclosed giant multiphononic effects are fundamentally caused by anharmonic spin-phonon couplings that strongly influence the mean lifetime of phonons.

Green hydrogen production through the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a promising solution for transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. To enable the use of a variety of electrolytes with different pH values, HER catalysts with pH universality are highly desirable but their performance remains mediocre. Herein, a pH‐universal HER catalyst composed of ruthenium nanoparticles decorated on amorphous Ni‐doped MoO3 (a–Ni–MoO3) nanowire support is reported, that is, Ru/a–Ni–MoO3, which achieves enhanced performance as compared to the commercial Ru/C catalyst. Electron transfer from Ru to a–Ni–MoO3 is identified by spectroscopic techniques, which results in a modified electronic structure of the Ru active sites with a reduced electron density of 4d states near the Fermi level. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the modulated electronic structure weakens the interactions between the Ru active sites and the reaction intermediates, which facilitates the HER reaction steps including H intermediate desorption and water dissociation. Experimental and theoretical findings provide insight into enhancing pH‐universal HER performance through modulation of electrocatalyst electronic structure.

Abstract Lead zirconate (PbZrO3) is considered the prototypical antiferroelectric material with an antipolar ground state. Yet, several experimental and theoretical works hint at a partially polar behaviour in this compound, indicating that the polarization may not be completely compensated. In this work, we propose a simple ferrielectric structure for lead zirconate. First-principles calculations reveal this state to be more stable than the commonly accepted antiferroelectric phase at low temperatures, possibly up to room temperature, suggesting that PbZrO3 may not be antiferroelectric at ambient conditions. We discuss the implications of our discovery, how it can be reconciled with experimental observations and how the ferrielectric phase could be obtained in practice.

Abstract Disorder–disorder phase transitions are rare in nature. Here, we present a comprehensive low-temperature experimental and theoretical study of the heat capacity and vibrational density of states of 1-fluoro-adamantane (C10H15F), an intriguing molecular crystal that presents a continuous disorder–disorder phase transition at T = 180 K and a low-temperature tetragonal phase that exhibits fractional fluorine occupancy. It is shown that fluorine occupancy disorder in the low-T phase of 1-fluoro-adamantane gives rise to the appearance of low-temperature glassy features in the corresponding specific heat (i.e., “boson peak” -BP-) and vibrational density of states. We identify the inflation of low-energy optical modes as the main responsible for the appearance of such glassy heat-capacity features and propose a straightforward correlation between the first localized optical mode and maximum BP temperature for disordered molecular crystals (either occupational or orientational). Thus, the present study provides new physical insights into the possible origins of the BP appearing in disordered materials and expands the set of molecular crystals in which “glassy-like” heat-capacity features have been observed.

Abstract Epitaxially grown $$\hbox {SrTiO}_{{3}}$$ SrTiO 3 (STO) thin films are material enablers for a number of critical energy-conversion and information-storage technologies like electrochemical electrode coatings, solid oxide fuel cells and random access memories. Oxygen vacancies ( $${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O ), on the other hand, are key defects to understand and tailor many of the unique functionalities realized in oxide perovskite thin films. Here, we present a comprehensive and technically sound ab initio description of $${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O in epitaxially strained (001) STO thin films. The novelty of our first-principles study lies in the incorporation of lattice thermal excitations on the formation energy and diffusion properties of $${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O over wide epitaxial strain conditions ( $$-4 \le \eta \le +4$$ - 4 ≤ η ≤ + 4 %). We found that thermal lattice excitations are necessary to obtain a satisfactory agreement between first-principles calculations and the available experimental data for the formation energy of $${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O . Furthermore, it is shown that thermal lattice excitations noticeably affect the energy barriers for oxygen ion diffusion, which strongly depend on $$\eta $$ η and are significantly reduced (increased) under tensile (compressive) strain. The present work demonstrates that for a realistic theoretical description of oxygen vacancies in STO thin films is necessary to consider lattice thermal excitations, thus going beyond standard zero-temperature ab initio approaches.

Abstract Traditional refrigeration technologies based on compression cycles of greenhouse gases pose serious threats to the environment and cannot be downscaled to electronic device dimensions. Solid-state cooling exploits the thermal response of caloric materials to changes in the applied external fields (i.e., magnetic, electric and/or mechanical stress) and represents a promising alternative to current refrigeration methods. However, most of the caloric materials known to date present relatively small adiabatic temperature changes ( $$|\Delta T| \sim 1$$ | Δ T | ∼ 1 to 10 K) and/or limiting irreversibility issues resulting from significant phase-transition hysteresis. Here, we predict by using molecular dynamics simulations the existence of colossal barocaloric effects induced by pressure (isothermal entropy changes of $$|\Delta S| \sim 100$$ | Δ S | ∼ 100 J K $$^{-1}$$ - 1 kg $$^{-1}$$ - 1 ) in the energy material Li $$_{2}$$ 2 B $$_{12}$$ 12 H $$_{12}$$ 12 . Specifically, we estimate $$|\Delta S| = 367$$ | Δ S | = 367 J K $$^{-1}$$ - 1 kg $$^{-1}$$ - 1 and $$|\Delta T| = 43$$ | Δ T | = 43 K for a small pressure shift of P = 0.1 GPa at $$T = 480$$ T = 480 K. The disclosed colossal barocaloric effects are originated by a fairly reversible order–disorder phase transformation involving coexistence of Li $$^{+}$$ + diffusion and (BH) $$_{12}^{-2}$$ 12 - 2 reorientational motion at high temperatures.

Abstract Structural defects are ubiquitous for polycrystalline perovskite films, compromising device performance and stability. Herein, a universal method is developed to overcome this issue by incorporating halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) into perovskite polycrystalline films. CsPbBr3 QDs are deposited on four types of halide perovskite films (CsPbBr3, CsPbIBr2, CsPbBrI2, and MAPbI3) and the interactions are triggered by annealing. The ions in the CsPbBr3 QDs are released into the thin films to passivate defects, and concurrently the hydrophobic ligands of QDs self‐assemble on the film surfaces and grain boundaries to reduce the defect density and enhance the film stability. For all QD‐treated films, PL emission intensity and carrier lifetime are significantly improved, and surface morphology and composition uniformity are also optimized. Furthermore, after the QD treatment, light‐induced phase segregation and degradation in mixed‐halide perovskite films are suppressed, and the efficiency of mixed‐halide CsPbIBr2 solar cells is remarkably improved to over 11% from 8.7%. Overall, this work provides a general approach to achieving high‐quality halide perovskite films with suppressed phase segregation, reduced defects, and enhanced stability for optoelectronic applications.

The formation of coamorphous mixtures of pharmaceuticals is an interesting strategy to improve the solubility and bioavailability of drugs, while at the same time enhancing the kinetic stability of the resulting binary glass and allowing the simultaneous administration of two active principles. In this contribution, we describe kinetically stable amorphous binary mixtures of two commercial active pharmaceutical ingredients, diazepam and nordazepam, of which the latter, besides being administered as a drug on its own, is also the main active metabolite of the other in the human body. We report the eutectic equilibrium-phase diagram of the binary mixture, which is found to be characterized by an experimental eutectic composition of 0.18 molar fraction of nordazepam, with a eutectic melting point of Te = 395.4 ± 1.2 K. The two compounds are barely miscible in the crystalline phase. The mechanically obtained mixtures were melted and supercooled to study the glass-transition and molecular-relaxation dynamics of amorphous mixtures at the corresponding concentration. The glass-transition temperature was always higher than room temperature and varied linearly with composition. The Te was lower than the onset of thermal decomposition of either compound (pure nordazepam decomposes upon melting and pure diazepam well above its melting point), thus implying that the eutectic liquid and glass can be obtained without any degradation of the drugs. The eutectic glass was kinetically stable against crystallization for at least a few months. The relaxation processes of the amorphous mixtures were studied by dielectric spectroscopy, which provided evidence for a single structural (α) relaxation, a single Johari–Goldstein (β) relaxation, and a ring-inversion conformational relaxation of the diazepinic ring, occurring on the same timescale in both drugs. We further characterized both the binary mixtures and pure compounds by FTIR spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations to analyze intermolecular interactions. The DFT calculations confirm the presence of strong attractive forces within the heteromolecular dimer, leading to large dimer interaction energies of the order of −0.1 eV.

Half-metallicity (HM) offers great potential for engineering spintronic applications, yet only few magnetic materials present metallicity in just one spin channel. In addition, most HM systems become magnetically disordered at temperatures well below ambient conditions, which further hinders the development of spin-based electronic devices. Here, we use first-principles methods based on density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the electronic, magnetic, structural, mixing, and vibrational properties of 90 XYZ half-Heusler (HH) alloys (X= Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; Y= V, Nb, Ta; Z= Si, Ge, Sn, S, Se, Te). We disclose a total of 28 new HH compounds that are ferromagnetic, vibrationally stable, and HM, with semiconductor band gaps in the range of 1–4 eV and HM band gaps of 0.2–0.8 eV. By performing Monte Carlo simulations of a spin Heisenberg model fitted to DFT energies, we estimate the Curie temperature, TC, of each HM compound. We find that 17 HH HM remain magnetically ordered at and above room temperature, namely, 300≤TC≤450 K, with total magnetic moments of 2 and 4 μB. A further materials sieve based on zero-temperature mixing energies let us to conclude 5 overall promising HH HM that remain magnetically ordered at and above room temperature: NaVSi, RbVTe, CsVS, CsVSe, and RbNbTe. We also predict 2 semiconductor materials that are ferromagnetic at ambient conditions: LiVSi and LiVGe.

Two-dimensional pseudocapacitors may benefit portable electronic devices but require improved energy and power densities. Here, the authors achieve high volumetric capacitance in ultrathin films with oxygen vacancies that enhance electron conduction and intercrystallite water that promotes proton conduction.

Large mechanocaloric effects are disclosed in lithium-ion superionic conductors at room temperature. These occur in the absence of any structural phase transition, which is beneficial from a practical point of view, and are related to stress-induced variations in the ionic conductivity.

Barocaloric materials offer promise in solid-state cooling devices, but few materials have been show to display giant barocaloric effects near room temperature. Here, the authors demonstrate that solid electrolyte AgI displays giant inverse barocaloric effects near its superionic phase transition at ~420 K.

Mechanocaloric effects are a promising path towards solid-state cooling. Here the authors perform atomistic simulations on the well-known fast-ion conductor silver iodide and computationally predict a sizeable mechanocaloric effect under biaxial strain.

We study the structural and mobility properties of edge dislocations in rare-gas crystals with the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure by using classical simulation techniques. Our results are discussed in the light of recent experimental and theoretical studies on hcp 4 He, an archetypal quantum crystal. According to our simulations classical hcp rare-gas crystals present a strong tendency towards dislocation dissociation into Shockley partials in the basal plane, similarly to what is observed in solid helium. This is due to the presence of a low-energy metastable stacking fault, of the order of 0.1 mJ/m 2 , that can get further reduced by quantum nuclear effects. We compute the minimum shear stress that induces glide of dislocations within the hcp basal plane at zero temperature, namely, the Peierls stress, and find a characteristic value of the order of 1 MPa. This threshold value is similar to the Peierls stress reported for metallic hcp solids (Zr and Cd) but orders of magnitude larger than the one estimated for solid helium. We find, however, that in contrast to classical hcp metals but in analogy to solid helium, glide of edge dislocations can be thermally activated at very low temperatures, T∼10 K, in the absence of any applied shear stress.

Using first-principles methods, we investigate the joint effects of epitaxial strain and electrostatic coupling on the appearance of oxygen octahedral rotations, O6, in ferroelectric perovskites. We find that by varying the relative content of ferroelectric and paraelectric layers in epitaxially strained superlattices the size of O6 can be efficiently tuned. We analyse the effects of applying an electric field on the critical temperature at which superionicity appears in archetypal fast ion conductor CaF2, by means of molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the onset of superionicity can be reduced by about 100 K when relatively small electric fields of ∼50 KV cm−1 are applied. Under large enough electric fields, however, ionic conductivity is depleted. The normal to superionic phase transition is characterised by a large increase of entropy, thereby sizeable electrocaloric effects can be realised in fast ion conductors that are promising for solid-state cooling applications.
