Malrotation is a cause of persistent pain and poor functioning postoperatively in those who undergo a total knee replacement (TKR). The accurate measurement of malrotation is not routinely available in most hospital settings due to an absence of three‐dimensional computed tomography (CT) software. An accessible, uncomplicated technique to demonstrate TKR prosthesis malrotation would be of benefit to orthopaedic surgeons worldwide. A patient was reviewed with persistent postoperative pain, having undergone a right TKR 3 years previously for progressive osteoarthritis. Postoperative prosthetic infection, instability, loosening, and fracture were ruled out as causes for the persistent pain. A two‐dimensional CT scan was obtained of the patient's affected right knee. Adhesive pieces of paper (Post‐it notes) were used to highlight the posterior tibial prosthesis axis, the tibial tuberosity axis, the posterior condylar axis of the femoral prosthesis and the femoral surgical transepicondylar axis, as per the technique described by Berger et al. A protractor was used to assess the degree of malrotation of the tibial and femoral prostheses. Allowing for human error and that of parallax, an immediate assessment was made of the patient's prosthesis using a readily available imaging modality, and malrotation was quickly identified using accessible, affordable everyday stationary equipment.

This study reports on the beneficiation of wood sawdust into cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) for application as a binder in the manufacture of particleboard. The cellulose nanocrystal from wood sawdust was extracted using acid hydrolysis and an oxidizing agent. This was used as it is for particleboard fabrication, likewise, after cross-linking with several cross-linking agents, viz., CNC-glyoxal, CNC-hexamine, CNC-polyamide–epichlorohydrin, and CNC-polyethylene to make cross-linked binders. The tensile strength performances of the particleboard panels were determined by modulus of rupture (MOR) and elasticity (MOE). The characterization of the CNC by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed cellulose functional structures in the CNC. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated high crystallinity index (78%) of the CNC and typical nano-dimensions of 2.1–10 nm for diameter and 150–350 nm for length as revealed by the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) analyze high thermal stability (250–400 ℃) of the CNC. Significant mechanical strength performances of the particleboard panels were evident in the modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE) values that were determined. The panels met grade 1-L-1 specification of the American National Standards Institute A208.1. The incorporation of cross-linking agents enhanced the static bending and bonding strength properties of the formulated bio-binders. It can be concluded that cellulose nanocrystals extracted from waste wood sawdust could be considered for use as a binder to produce environmentally friendly wood composites bio-adhesives and particleboard panel fabrication. Psbetaeudomonas (P.) aeruginosa infection of the cornea in BALB/c mice does not result in perforation and the mice have been classified as resistant. However, regulation of this response via inflammasome activation remained untested. Therefore, BALB/c mice were infected with P. aeruginosa ATCC strain 19660 and NLRP3 and NLRC4 protein tested by ELISA. Since NLRC4 vs NLRP3 protein levels were significantly higher in the corneas of BALB/c at 1 and 5 days postinfection we used silencing to knockdown NLRC4. Silencing NLRC4 vs scrambled siRNA treatment exacerbated disease in BALB/c mice, reduced myeloperoxidase levels and elevated bacterial plate counts at 5 days postinfection. It also increased pro IL-1beta, but reduced total protein for IL-1beta and IL-18 at 5 days postinfection. Flow cytometry to identify cells affected by silencing, showed reduced caspase-1 levels in a CD11blowLy6Glow population of cells, (but not PMN or macrophages) from the infected cornea of siNLRC4 treated mice that produced less mature IL-1beta. These data provide evidence that the NLRC4 inflammasome contributes to resistance through regulation of caspase-1, IL-1beta and IL-18 in a CD11blowLy6Glow population of cells.

There is a growing need for diversified material feedstock for 3D printing technologies such as fused deposition modelling (FDM) techniques. This has resulted in an increased drive in the research and development of eco-friendly biopolymer-based composites with wide applications. At present, bionanocomposites of polylactic acid (PLA), biopolymer, and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) offer promising technical qualities suitable for FDM 3D printing applications due to their biodegradability and wide-ranging applications. In this work, the applicability of the PLA/CNCs bionanocomposites in 4D applications was investigated by studying its shape-recovery behaviour. Tensile and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to elucidate the mechanical and flexural properties of the 3D-printed specimens. The results revealed improvement in the deflection temperature under load (DTUL), creep deformation, and recovery of the PLA/CNCs bionanocomposites. Tensile and static 3-point bending analyses of the bionanocomposites revealed improved tensile strength and modulus of the 3D printed parts. The potential 4D application of the PLA/CNCs bionanocomposites was also investigated by successfully printing PLA/CNC bionanocomposites directly onto a nylon fabric. The PLA/CNCs-fabric prototype included a foldable cube and grid-patterned designs. Additionally, the heat-induced shape memory behaviour of these prototypes was demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study focused on modeling and optimization of the concentration of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), snail shell nanoparticles (SSN), and glycerol for the development of bioplastic films. The response surface methodology using Box–Behnken experimental design was used to investigate the effect of the independent parameters (additives concentrations) on the ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus of fabricated bioplastic films. A varied ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus with different component loadings was observed, proving the effect of nanoparticles loading effect on the mechanical properties of bioplastic films. The quadratic polynomial model experiment data provided a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.795 for ultimate tensile strength and 0.732 for Young's modulus, evidencing the fitness of the models to pilot the optimization space. The optimum parameters were PVA (7.820%), CNC (1079%), SSN (1241%), and glycerol (2.657%). The ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus of 27.2 MPa and 31.2 MPa were obtained for the developed bioplastic film with optimized concentrations of each component. The bioplastic films showed improved thermal stability and degradation. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging revealed a homogeneous dispersion of SSN and CNC in the matrix, which explained the improved properties observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The beneficiation of sludge from pulp and paper mills to produce high-value products such as crystalline nanocellulose will alleviate the challenges associated with conventional methods of sludge disposal, such as landfilling and incineration. In addition, the use of sludge will reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials in the synthesis of nanocellulose which is usually produced from high-purity cellulose pulps. In this study, fibres were cleaned and separated from sludge and then converted to crystalline nanocellulose using ammonium persulphate under optimised oxidative conditions. To extend potential applications of the crystalline nanocellulose produced, the crystalline nanocellulose was functionalised with zinc oxide, silver and hydroxyapatite to prepare crystalline nanocellulose-zinc oxide, crystalline nanocellulose-silver and crystalline nanocellulose-hydroxyapatite nano- and micro-composites powders using the sol-gel process. Transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used to investigate the properties of crystalline nanocellulose and functionalised crystalline nanocellulose. The transmission electron microscope and field-emission scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of crystalline nanocellulose, and inorganic nanoparticles. Functionalised samples (crystalline nanocellulose-zinc oxide, crystalline nanocellulose-silver and crystalline nanocellulose-hydroxyapatite) showed better thermal stability than pure crystalline nanocellulose. This implies that the modified inorganic crystalline nanocellulose composites could be used in applications where thermal stability is desirable. Two common Nigerian-grown biomasses, gmelina (Gmelina arborea) and bamboo (Bambusaa vulgaris) have been pulped and their fibre characteristics and paper properties examined. The results of their chemical compositions showed some fair similarities. The amount of glucose in the pulps of both biomasses indicated their suitability as lignocellulosic materials for pulping. Their pulp yield ranged between 48,0-54,1%, which fell within the acceptable range for good pulpwoods. The analysis of their fibre dimensions revealed that bamboo fibre has a wider fibre length distribution and higher fine length content. Gmelina and bamboo had weighted mean fibre lengths of 0,93 and 2,07 mm and mean fibre widths of 24,1 and 16,9 µm, respectively. The Runkel ratios of the samples were 0,4 (gmelina) and 0,9 (bamboo): this is indicative of their suitability for paper making. Mechanical properties of handsheets obtained from gmelina compared fairly well with South African pulpwoods (Eucalyptus grandis and Pinus paluta). Bamboo exhibited better tear index values than these woods but with lower sheet density and tensile index. These properties were significantly improved in handsheets obtained from blends of gmelina and bamboo, raising the prospect of producing paper from blends of both raw materials in Nigeria. The feasibility of enhancing the efficiency of the kraft pulping operations while at the same time evolving the process into a biorefinery, and thus producing hemicelluloses together with paper products, was studied. Hardwood chips (Eucalyptus grandis) were pre-treated with green liquor prior to pulp production. At optimal pre-treatment conditions, the pH of the resulting extract was 7.8, the wood weight loss was 14%, and the hemicellulose extracted was almost 40 kg/ton of woodchips. In the subsequent kraft pulping, the resulting data revealed that the woodchips from which hemicellulose had been pre-extracted could be pulped much faster than woodchips pulped without hemicellulose extraction. As a result, to maintain the target kappa number, a 20% reduction in pulping chemicals was achievable. Hemicellulose pre-extraction led to a 10% reduction in black liquor solid contents. Moreover, the strength properties of the pulps produced with and without hemicellulose extraction were comparable. Industrial acceptance of this concept, however, still requires a more accurate understanding of the effect of specific mill operating conditions on mill energy balance. The article examines the conditions in the acid hydrolysis (A) stage which led in the removal of hexenuronic acid (HexA) but with effect on physical and chemical properties of the pulp after bleaching. Oxygen delignified pulps produced from a Eucalyptus hybrid clone, E. grandis x E. urophylla, underwent acid hydrolysis. It discovered the efficiency of A-stage in the removal of HexA.

The article presents a study on the influence of genotype and site quality of two commercially significant South African grown Eucalyptus hybrid clones, on the formation of hexeneuronic acid (HexA). The results demonstrate that pulps produced from E. grandis x E. urophylla (GU) clones have significantly higher amounts of HexA compared to pulps produced from E. grandis x E. camaldulensis (GC) clones, which are grown on area of same quality. Higher amounts of HexA were exhibited by both clones on sites of poor quality as compared to the same clones grown in good sites.

The article presents a response to Wesley J. Wildman's contention on anthropomorphic models of ultimate reality. The author questions the standards proposed by Wildman in evaluating models of ultimate reality and the plausability of grading such models. He also states that Wildman's paper offers a wide-ranging treatment of an intriguing issue in the philosophy of religion, particularly, how to make sense of the various models of ultimate reality evolving out of the world's religious and philosophical traditions.
