Erbium-doped glass microsphere laser systems hold significant promise in the applications of bio-medicine and optical fiber sensing. However, their development has been hindered by the relatively high laser pump threshold. In this study, we proposed a unique dual microsphere system where two microspheres are affixed to a single-mode fiber taper and achieved a remarkably low lasing threshold of 19 μW for single-mode laser emission at 1544 nm. This is in sharp contrast with the lasing threshold of 56 μW observed in single microspheres. Our findings represent a significant achievement in the development of low-threshold, compact infrared laser sources for emerging applications in photonics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights Hollow glass microsphere (HGM)—based composites are gaining popularity in materials research due to their ability in altering material characteristics drastically. The current study investigates HGMs filled carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CE) composites on transverse properties, aiming for aerospace and defense applications mainly in composite pressure vessels. Unidirectional laminates of Carbon/Epoxy with varying HGM percentages (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 wt. %) were wounded onto a flat‐plate mandrel using a 4‐axis filament winder, along with a baseline sample without HGM for comparison. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal stability were analyzed by carrying out dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The fracture mechanism of the samples loaded under tension was investigated using FESEM. Experimental results indicate reduction in density with increase in HGM content, up to 0.4% HGM there is increase in transverse tensile strength of 25% compared to baseline and further increase in HGM content, decrease trend is observed. 30% decrease in transverse compressive strength is observed compared from baseline to 1.0 wt. % of HGM. No significant change was noticed in the thermal stability and Tg on introduction of HGM. Microscopy images of fractured samples revealed effective physical interaction and dispersion of the HGM within the matrix. Transverse mechanical properties are tested to know the influence of HGM filler on filament wound composites. Density of the composite decreases with increase in HGM content. Porous mullite ceramics were prepared by pressing molding and sintering method, using coal gangue and bauxite as raw materials, hollow glass microspheres as pore-forming agent. The effects of addition amount of hollow glass microspheres and sintering temperature on phase composition, microstructure, flexural resistance and acid and alkali corrosion resistance were studied. The results show that increasing the amount of hollow glass microspheres can increase the porosity of porous ceramics; the addition of hollow glass microspheres can promote the formation of mullite phase and reduce the sintering temperature. In a certain temperature range, increasing the sintering temperature can also increase the porosity, but when the sintering temperature is over 1350 ℃, the porosity begins to decline. Porous mullite ceramics with porosity of 33.23% and flexural strength of 56.41 MPa can be obtained by keeping the molar ratio of Al2O3∶SiO2=3∶2 and adjusting the addition amount of hollow glass microspheres to 1.68%(mass fraction) and sintering at 1350 ℃ for 2 h, which has good acid and alkali corrosion resistance.

Our objective was to demonstrate primarily the safety and secondarily the efficacy of 90 Y glass microspheres in selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a local Southeast Asian hospital. Methods: Eleven consecutive patients with small, unresectable, nonmetastatic HCC and referred for locoregional therapy with SIRT with a curative intention were followed up for 6 mo after the procedure by way of interviews, blood tests, and anatomic scans. Results: Although 5 patients had deranged liver function tests after the procedure, in only 1 patient did this constitute a grade 1 toxicity (in alkaline phosphatase) by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Half the patients showed a reduction in serum α-fetoprotein measurements, and 6 of 11 patients demonstrated an objective response (complete or partial) on imaging. Conclusion: SIRT with 90 Y glass microspheres is a safe and efficacious locoregional therapy for unresectable HCC. There are similar articles published in the West; however, the patient population there comprises far fewer Asians and the underlying cause for HCC is different from that in the Asian population. Background: To investigate the clinical, hematological and biochemical toxicity differences between glass and resin yttrium-90 ( 90 Y)-microspheres radioembolization treatment of primary and metastatic liver disease., Methods: Between May 2014 and November 2016 all consecutive glass and resin 90 Y microspheres radioembolization treatments were retrospectively analyzed. Biochemical, hematological and clinical data were collected at treatment day, two weeks, one month and three months follow-up. Post-treatment 90 Y PET/CTs were assessed for the absorbed doses in non-tumorous liver volume (DNTLV) and tumor volume (DTV). Biochemical, hematological and clinical toxicity were compared between glass and resin using chi square tests and repeated ANOVA measures. Biochemical and clinical toxicity was correlated with DNTLV,total by means of Pearson correlation and independent t-tests., Results: A total of 85 patients were included (N.=44 glass, N.=41 resin). Clinical toxicity the day after treatment (i.e. abdominal pain [P=0.000], nausea [P=0.000] and vomiting [P=0.003]) was more prevalent for resin. Biochemical and hematological toxicities were similar for both microspheres. The DNTLV,total was significantly higher in patients with REILD grade ≥3 in the resin group (43.5 versus 33.3 Gy [P=0.050]). A similar non-significant trend was seen in the glass group: 95.0 versus 69.0 Gy [P=0.144]., Conclusions: The clinical, hematological and biochemical toxicity of radioembolization treatment with glass and resin is comparable, however, post-embolization syndrome related complaints are more common for resin.

Glass microspheres have gained significant attention over the years in the field of photonics due to their application in whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonator platforms. However, the synthesis of glass spheres in the micro regime remains challenging, while it relies mostly on complicated synthetic methods or sol-gel chemistry. Herein, we demonstrate the controlled formation of phosphate glass microspheres by means of a simple, fast, low-temperature, post-glass melting thermal treatment of previously quenched glass. Moreover, we report on the simultaneous formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the surface of glass spheres upon the same treatment. BackgroundThis prospective pilot single-institution study was undertaken to document the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of radioembolization of liver-dominant metastatic gastrointestinal cancer using 90Y glass microspheres.MethodsBetween June 2010 and October 2013, 42 adult patients (26 men, 16 women; median age 60 years) with metastatic chemotherapy-refractory unresectable colorectal (n=21), neuroendocrine (n=11), intrahepatic bile duct (n=7), pancreas (n=2), and esophageal (n=1) carcinomas underwent 60 lobar or segmental administrations of 90Y glass microspheres. Data regarding clinical and laboratory adverse events (AE) were collected prospectively for up to 5.5 years after radioembolization. Radiographic responses were evaluated using Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST), version 1.1. Time to maximum response, response duration, progression-free survival (PFS) (hepatic and extrahepatic), and overall survival (OS) were measured.ResultsMedian target dose and activity were 109.4 Gy and 2.6 GBq per treatment session, respectively. Majority of clinical AE were grade 1 or 2 in severity. Patients with colorectal cancer had hepatic objective response rate (ORR) of 25% and a hepatic disease control rate (DCR) of 80%. Median PFS and OS were 1.0 and 4.4 months, respectively. Patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NET) had hepatic ORR and DCR of 73% and 100%, respectively. Median PFS was 8.9 months for this cohort. DCR and median PFS and OS for patients with cholangiocarcinoma were 86%, 1.1 months, and 6.7 months, respectively.Conclusions90Y glass microspheres device has a favorable safety profile, and achieved prolonged disease control of hepatic tumor burden in a subset of patients, including all patients enrolled in the neuroendocrine cohort.

With the development of the integrated circuit and chip industry, electronic products and their components are becoming increasingly miniaturized, high-frequency, and low-loss. These demand higher requirements for the dielectric properties and other aspects of epoxy resins to develop a novel epoxy resin system that meets the needs of current development. This paper employs ethyl phenylacetate cured dicyclopentadiene phenol (DCPD) epoxy resin as the matrix and incorporates KH550 coupling-agent-treated SiO2 hollow glass microspheres to produce composite materials with low dielectric, high heat resistance, and high modulus. These materials are applied as insulation films for high density interconnect (HDI) and substrate-like printed circuit board (SLP) boards. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) technique was used to characterize the reaction between the coupling agent and HGM, as well as the curing reaction between the epoxy resin and ethyl phenylacetate. The curing process of the DCPD epoxy resin system was determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The various properties of the composite material with different HGM contents were tested, and the mechanism of the impact of HGM on the properties of the composite material was discussed. The results indicate that the prepared epoxy resin composite material exhibits good comprehensive performance when the HGM content is 10 wt.%. The dielectric constant at 10 MHz is 2.39, with a dielectric loss of 0.018. The thermal conductivity is 0.1872 Wm−1 k−1, the coefficient of thermal expansion is 64.31 ppm/K, the glass transition temperature is 172 °C, and the elastic modulus is 1221.13 MPa.

Objectives: There is a lack of sufficient evidence regarding the use of extended shelf-life (ExSL) Yttrium-90 ( 90 Y) glass radiomicrospheres in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of ExSL 90 Y glass radiomicrospheres with a personalized treatment approach by analyzing 18 F-FDG PET/CT quantitative parameters [metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG)] separately before and after the treatment., Methods: A total of 93 radioembolization sessions involving 77 patients were included. Simplicit 90 Y software was utilized to perform multicompartmental voxel-based dosimetry. Adverse events were recorded using the CTCAE v5.0 criteria. The survival data were recorded in detail., Results: The overall disease control rate was 84.9%, with a median overall survival (OS) of 12.7 months and median progression-free survival (PFS) of 8.3 months. A statistically significant increase in treatment response rate was observed when there was an increase in absorbed tumor dose for pre-treatment unit MTV ( P  = 0.005) and TLG ( P  = 0.004) values. We didn't observe any additional side effects/vital risks that could be considered clinically significant., Conclusion: Our study has provided evidence on the therapeutic effectiveness and safety in terms of dose-toxicity profile of ExSL 90 Y glass microspheres in a large cohort of mCRC patients. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is currently the standard of care in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and selective internal radionuclide therapy (SIRT) with 90Y microspheres is mainly used as an alternative modality in patients considered poor candidates for TACE. Treatment with sorafenib is the recommended option for patients with progressive disease after TACE. This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of SIRT with glass microspheres in patients with progressive HCC after repeated TACE who are not eligible for treatment with sorafenib. Forty-seven patients with progressive HCC after a median of three TACE sessions (range 2–14) underwent SIRT (3.5 ± 1.5 GBq; liver target dose 110–120 Gy). Toxicity was recorded 4 and 12 weeks after treatment and reported according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events Version 5.0. Treatment response was assessed three months after SIRT using multiphase computed tomography and modified criteria in solid tumors (mRECIST). Survival analyses were performed using Kaplan–Meier curves and a Cox proportional hazards model for uni- and multivariate analyses. Significant but reversible hepatotoxicity (≥grade 3) occurred in five patients (11%). No radioembolization-induced liver disease (REILD) was observed. The number of previous TACE sessions and cumulative administered activity did not predict the incidence of post-SIRT significant hepatotoxicity. Treatment responses consisted of partial responses in 26 (55%), stable disease in 12 (26%), and progressive disease in 9 (19%) patients. The median overall survival (OS) was 11 months (95% confidence interval (CI), 9–13), and objective responses to SIRT were associated with a longer OS (p = 0.008). Significant hepatotoxicity (≥grade 3) after SIRT was a contributor to impaired survival (median OS 6 months (95% CI, 4–8) vs. 12 months (95% CI, 10–14), p < 0.001). SIRT with glass microspheres is a safe and effective salvage treatment for patients with progressive HCC refractory to TACE who are considered poor candidates for sorafenib treatment. Background: Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) using a suitable β−-emitting radionuclide is a promising treatment modality for unresectable liver carcinoma. Yttrium-90 (90Y) [T1/2 = 64.2 h, Eβ(max) = 2.28 MeV, no detectable γ-photon] is the most preferred radioisotope for SIRT owing to its favorable decay characteristics. Objective: The present study describes indigenous development and evaluation of intrinsically radiolabeled [90Y]yttria alumino silicate ([90Y]YAS) glass microsphere, a formulation biosimilar to "TheraSphere" (commercially available, U.S. FDA-approved formulation), for SIRT of unresectable liver carcinoma in human patients. Methods: YAS glass microspheres of composition 40Y2O3-20Al2O3-40SiO2 (w/w) and diameter ranging between 20 and 36 μm were synthesized with almost 100% conversion efficiency and >99% sphericity. Intrinsically labeled [90Y]YAS glass microspheres were produced by thermal neutron irradiation of cold YAS glass microspheres in a research reactor. Subsequent to in vitro evaluations and in vivo studies in healthy Wistar rats, customized doses of [90Y]YAS glass microspheres were administered in human patients. Results: [90Y]YAS glass microspheres were produced with 137.7 ± 8.6 MBq/mg YAS glass (∼6800 Bq per microsphere) specific activity and 99.94% ± 0.02% radionuclidic purity at the end of irradiation. The formulation exhibited excellent in vitro stability in human serum and showed >97% retention in the liver up to 7 d post-administration when biodistribution studies were carried out in healthy Wistar rats. Yttrium-90 positron emission tomography scans recorded at different time points post-administration of customized dose of [90Y]YAS glass microspheres in human patients showed near-quantitative retention of the formulation in the injected lobe. Conclusions: The study confirmed the suitability of indigenously prepared [90Y]YAS glass microspheres for clinical use in the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. This study deals with the hydrostatic strength of hollow glass microspheres composites, commonly known as syntactic foams, using model materials made of 0.15 g/cm3 microspheres with 3 types of matrix, two epoxies and one paraffin. More than 100 model material samples are characterized for that work. The hydrostatic strength of these composite materials is determined in a pressure vessel, which can go up to 100 MPa. Two major parameters are studied: stiffness of the matrix and microsphere volume content within the composite material. The results clearly show that the hydrostatic strength of the syntactic foam can be improved by an increase in matrix stiffness or a reduction in microspheres content. Based on experimental data an empirical model with two parameters is proposed to describe the hydrostatic strength of syntactic foam. The relevance of the model is discussed.

This work presents an alternative to studying and determining the torsion modulus, G, in composites. For this purpose, a measuring system used a rotational motion sensor coupled to a torsion pendulum. The determination of the angular position as a function of time and an equation derived from studies of mechanical spectroscopy, allowed to determine the value of G, so experiments focused on samples of different quantities of hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) in unsaturated polyester resins. The G results show that the addition of HGMs (16.67 %W) reduces the value of torsion modulus by 31% when compared to the unsaturated resin (100 %W). On the other hand, considering the same two samples, there is a material density reduction of approximately 43% with the addition of HGMs, which makes these materials lighter, and of great practical interest. The relationship between G and material density shows that it is possible to change the amount of HGMs for optimal torsion resistance. The advantage of this technique, compared to other dynamic methods, is that it is not necessary to know the Poisson's ratio of the material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon fiber epoxy resin (CFRP) is gradually used as the space satellite antenna material, thermal control coatings (TCCs) are prepared on the surface to ensure the stable operation. However, the traditional TCCs have no wave transmission capability. The hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) were used to prepare the coating in our work, and ZrO2 was coated on its surface (Zr-HGM) to improve the solar reflectivity. The Zr-HGM powders were obtained by a homogeneous precipitation method with an appropriate reaction time of 4 h. By investigating the optical and dielectric properties, we found that the solar absorption of the coating with Zr-HGM was reduced by half compared to the coating with the original HGM. The microwave transmittances were all above 96.5% from 2 to 18 GHz. Our findings have proposed a preparation method for a new CFRP-based TCC, which will ensure the stable operation of the satellite antenna.

Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) as a filling material that can enhance the crashworthiness of thin-walled tubes. GO-HGMS hybrid was prepared by solution blending of graphene oxide (GO) and hollow glass microspheres (HGMS). The effect of the composite on the compression properties of RPUF was investigated. The GO-HGMS hybrid was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffraction(XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The compression test and microstructure results show that the best compression performance and the largest apparent density of the composite foam were obtained when the hybrid content was 4 wt %. In addition, the compression test results of empty tubes (ET) and foam-filled tubes (FFT) under lateral load indicate that the combination of lightweight foamed material and thin-walled tube improves the stability of thin-walled tube deformation and the ability of the structure to resist deformation. GO-HGMS/RPUF as the filling material of thin-walled tube structure greatly improves the bearing capacity and energy absorption level of ET.

Improved heat transfer in composites consisting of guar gel matrix and randomly distributed glass microspheres is extensively studied to predict the effective thermal conductivity of composites using the finite element method. In the study, the proper and probabilistic three-dimensional random distribution of microspheres in the continuous matrix is automatically generated by a simple and efficient random sequential adsorption algorithm which is developed by considering the correlation of three factors including particle size, number of particles, and particle volume fraction controlling the geometric configuration of random packing. Then the dependences of the effective thermal conductivity of composite materials on some important factors are investigated numerically, including the particle volume fraction, the particle spatial distribution, the number of particles, the nonuniformity of particle size, the particle dispersion morphology and the thermal conductivity contrast between particle and matrix. The related numerical results are compared with theoretical predictions and available experimental results to assess the validity of the numerical model. These results can provide good guidance for the design of advanced microsphere reinforced composite materials.

The present work has the objective of studying the effect of shot peening with glass microspheres on SAE 1020 steel in its resistance to fatigue. Fatigue tests were carried out by rotary bending with load control and loading on balance in specimens with and without shot peening. A rotation speed of approximately 750 rpm (12.5 Hz) was employed in the fatigue tests. Vickers microhardness tests were performed in order to verify the surface hardening produced by shot peening with glass microspheres. Analysis of the steel surface and fatigue fractures was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fatigue tests were performed in order to obtain S-N curves (Wöhler curves). It was observed that shot peening with glass microspheres improved the fatigue strength of the steel at high cycle.
