Search

We present and fully characterize a flow cell dedicated to imaging in liquid at the nanoscale. Its use as a routine sample environment for soft X-ray spectromicroscopy is demonstrated, in particular through the spectral analysis of inorganic particles in water. The care taken in delineating the fluidic pathways and the precision associated with pressure actuation ensure the efficiency of fluid renewal under the beam, which in turn guarantees a successful utilization of this microfluidic tool for in situ kinetic studies. The assembly of the described flow cell necessitates no sophisticated microfabrication and can be easily implemented in any laboratory. Furthermore, the design principles we relied on are transposable to all microscopies involving strongly absorbed radiation (e.g. X-ray, electron), as well as to all kinds of X-ray diffraction/scattering techniques. A new monochromator is designed to develop a high performance soft X-ray microscopy beamline at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). But owing to its high resolving power and high accurate spectrum output, there exist many technical difficulties. In the paper presented, as two primary design targets for the monochromator, theoretical energy resolution and photon flux of the beamline are calculated. For wavelength scanning mechanism, primary factors affecting the rotary angle errors are presented, and the measuring results are 0.15" and 0.17" for plane mirror and plane grating, which means that it is possible to provide sufficient scanning precision to specific wavelength. For plane grating switching mechanism, the repeatabilities of roll, yaw and pitch angles are 0.08", 0.12" and 0.05", which can guarantee the high accurate switch of the plane grating effectively. After debugging, the repeatability of light spot drift reaches to 0.7", which further improves the performance of the monochromator. The commissioning results show that the energy resolving power is higher than 10000 at Ar L-edge, the photon flux is higher than 1 × 108 photons/sec/200 mA, and the spatial resolution is better than 30 nm, demonstrating that the monochromator performs very well and reaches theoretical predictions. Soft X-ray imaging is a very useful diagnostic technique in plasma-focus (PF) experiments. This paper reports results of four experimental sessions which were carried out at the DPF-1000U plasma-focus facility in 2013 and 2014. Over 200 discharges were performed at various experimental conditions. Measurements were taken using two X-ray pinhole cameras with a line of sight perpendicular to the z-axis, at different azimuthal angles (about 20° and 200°), and looking towards the centre of the PF-pinch column. They were equipped with diaphragms 1000 μm or 200-300 μm in diameter and coated with filters of 500 μm Al foil and 10 μm Be foil, respectively. Data on the neutron emission were collected with silver activation counters. For time-resolved measurements the use was made of four PIN diodes equipped with various filters and oriented towards the centre of the PF-column, in the direction perpendicular to the electrode axis. The recorded X-ray images revealed that when the additional gas-puff system is activated during the discharge, the stability of the discharge is improved. The data collected in these experiments confirmed the appearance of a filamentary fine structure in the PF discharges. In the past years the formation of such filaments was observed in many Z-pinch type experiments. Some of the recorded X-ray images have also revealed the appearance of the so-called hot-spots, i.e. small plasma regions of a very intense X-ray emission. Such a phenomenon was observed before in many PF experiments, e.g. in the MAJA-PF device, but it has not been investigated so far in a large facility such as the DPF-1000U. The time-resolved measurements provided the evidence of a time lapse between the X-ray emission from plasma regions located at different distance from the anode surface. The Diffraction and Projection Imaging (DiProI) beamline at FERMI, the Elettra free-electron laser (FEL), hosts a multi-purpose station that has been opened to users since the end of 2012. This paper describes the core capabilities of the station, designed to make use of the unique features of the FERMI-FEL for performing a wide range of static and dynamic scattering experiments. The various schemes for time-resolved experiments, employing both soft X-ray FEL and seed laser IR radiation are presented by using selected recent results. The ongoing upgrade is adding a reflection geometry setup for scattering experiments, expanding the application fields by providing both high lateral and depth resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the development of new instrumentation at the Linac Coherent Light Source for conducting THz excitation experiments in an ultra high vacuum environment probed by soft X-ray diffraction. This consists of a cantilevered, fully motorized mirror system which can provide 600 kV cm−1 electric field strengths across the sample and an X-ray detector that can span the full Ewald sphere with in-vacuum motion. The scientific applications motivated by this development, the details of the instrument, and spectra demonstrating the field strengths achieved using this newly developed system are discussed. The aim of this paper is to test the model of oscillating magnetic traps (the OMT model), proposed by Jakimiec and Tomczak ( Solar Phys. 261, 233, 2010). This model describes the process of excitation of quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) observed during solar flares. In the OMT model energetic electrons are accelerated within a triangular, cusp-like structure situated between the reconnection point and the top of a flare loop as seen in soft X-rays. We analyzed QPPs in hard X-ray light curves for 23 flares as observed by Yohkoh. Three independent methods were used. We also used hard X-ray images to localize magnetic traps and soft X-ray images to diagnose thermal plasmas inside the traps. We found that the majority of the observed pulsation periods correlates with the diameters of oscillating magnetic traps, as was predicted by the OMT model. We also found that the electron number density of plasma inside the magnetic traps in the time of pulsation disappearance is strongly connected with the pulsation period. The paper presents the Gamma-4 four-module electrophysical facility project developed for radiation physics research. For this facility, we have developed and tested a typical module which, with a matched load, generates an electrical pulse with voltage and current amplitudes of up to 2 MV and 750 kA, respectively, and with a half-height duration of 60 ns. 700 shots were performed which conformed the operating parameters and reliability of the module. Layouts of the facility for the modes of synchronous (with accuracy of ±3 ns) operation of the modules with vacuum electron diodes and with a current summator to generate soft x-ray pulses have been developed. In this paper we present the differential emission measures (DEMs) of two sub-A class microflares observed in hard X-rays (HXRs) by the FOXSI-2 sounding rocket experiment, on 2014 December 11. The second Focusing Optics X-ray Solar Imager (FOXSI) flight was coordinated with instruments X-ray Telescope (Hinode/XRT) and Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), which provided observations in soft X-rays and Extreme Ultraviolet. This unique data set offers an unprecedented temperature coverage, useful for characterizing the plasma temperature distribution of microflares. By combining data from FOXSI-2, XRT, and AIA, we determined a well-constrained DEM for the microflares. The resulting DEMs peak around 3 MK and extend beyond 10 MK. The emission measures determined from FOXSI-2 were lower than 1026 cm−5 for temperatures higher than 5 MK; faint emission in this range is best measured in HXRs. The coordinated FOXSI-2 observations produce one of the few definitive measurements of the distribution and the amount of plasma above 5 MK in microflares. We utilize the multi-thermal DEMs to calculate the amount of thermal energy released during both the microflares as ∼5.0 × 1028 erg for Microflare 1 and ∼1.6 × 1028 erg for Microflare 2. We also show the multi-thermal DEMs provide more comprehensive thermal energy estimates than isothermal approximation, which systematically underestimates the amount of thermal energy released. Numerical simulations of radiative two-temperature hot accretion flows (HAFs) around Neutron stars (NSs) are performed. We assume that all of the energy carried by the HAF around a NS will be thermalized and radiated out at the surface of the NS. The thermal photons will propagate outwards radially and cool the HAF via Comptonization. We define as the mass accretion rate at the surface of the central object in unit of Eddington accretion rate (, with LEdd and c being Eddington luminosity and speed of light, respectively). When is lower than ∼10−4, the cooling of the HAF is not important and outflows are very strong. When , cooling becomes important and outflows are significantly weak. In the range , the HAFs transients from a strong outflow phase to a very weak outflow phase with increase of . The properties of the HAF around a NS are also compared with those of the HAF around a BH. We find that with a similar , the dynamical properties of the HAF around a NS are quite similar as those of the HAF around a BH. However, the emitted spectrum of a HAF around a NS can be quite different from that of a HAF around a BH due to the presence of a thermal soft X-ray component coming from the surface of the NS. The relative amount of high-temperature plasma has been found to be a useful diagnostic to determine the frequency of coronal heating on sub-resolution structures. When the loops are infrequently heated, a broad emission measure (EM) over a wider range of temperatures is expected. A narrower EM is expected for high-frequency heating where the loops are closer to equilibrium. The soft X-ray spectrum contains many spectral lines that provide high-temperature diagnostics, including lines from Fe xvii–xix. This region of the solar spectrum will be observed by the Marshall Grazing Incidence Spectrometer (MaGIXS) in 2020. In this paper, we derive the expected spectral line intensity in MaGIXS to varying amounts of high-temperature plasma to demonstrate that a simple line ratio provides a powerful diagnostic to determine the heating frequency. Similarly, we examine ratios of AIA channel intensities, filter ratios from a XRT, and energy bands from the FOXSI sounding rocket to determine their sensitivity to this parameter. We find that both FOXSI and MaGIXS provide good diagnostic capabilities for high-temperature plasma. We then compare the predicted line ratios to the output of a numerical model and confirm that the MaGIXS ratios provide an excellent diagnostic for heating frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a well-known naturally occurring metalloid with abundant hazards to our environment, especially being a human carcinogen through arsenic-contaminated drinking water. The iAs-related contamination is usually examined by a chemical assay system or fluorescence staining technique to investigate iAs accumulation and its deleterious effects. In this work, we present a dual-modality measurement and quantitative analysis methods for the overall evaluation of various dose-dependent iAs-related cytotoxicological manifestations by the combination of the synchrotron-radiation-based scanning transmission soft X-ray microscopy (SR-STXM) and Fourier transform infrared micro-spectroscopy (SR-FTIR) techniques. The gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) based machine learning was employed on SR-STXM data to quantify the cytomorphological feature changes and the dose-dependent iAs-induced feature classifications with increasing doses. The infrared spectral absorption peaks and changes of dose-dependent iAs-induced cells were obtained by the SR-FTIR technique and classified by the multi-spectral-variate principle component analysis (PCA–LDA) method, showing the separated spatial distribution of dose-dependent groups. In addition, the quantitative comparisons of trivalent and pentavalent iAs under high dose conditions (iAsIII_H & iAsV_H) demonstrated that iAsIII_H and its compounds were more toxic than iAsV_H. This method has a potential in providing the morphological and spectral characteristics evolution of the iAs-related cells or particles, revealing the actual risk of arsenic contamination and metabolism. The intermediate polar FO Aquarii (FO Aqr) experienced its first reported low-accretion states in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and, using newly available photographic plates, we identify prediscovery low states in 1965, 1966, and 1974. The primary focus of our analysis, however, is an extensive set of time-series photometry obtained between 2002 and 2018, with particularly intensive coverage of the 2016–2018 low states. After computing an updated spin ephemeris for the white dwarf (WD), we show that its spin period began to increase in 2014 after having spent 27 yr decreasing; no other intermediate polar has experienced a sign change of its period derivative, but FO Aqr has now done so twice. Our central finding is that the recent low states all occurred shortly after the WD began to spin down, even though no low states were reported in the preceding quarter-century, when it was spinning up. Additionally, the system's mode of accretion is extremely sensitive to the mass-transfer rate, with accretion being almost exclusively disk-fed when FO Aqr is brighter than V ∼ 14 and substantially stream-fed when it is not. Even in the low states, a grazing eclipse remains detectable, confirming the presence of a disklike structure (but not necessarily a Keplerian accretion disk). We relate these various observations to theoretical predictions that during the low state, the system's accretion disk dissipates into a non-Keplerian ring of diamagnetic blobs. Finally, a new XMM-Newton observation from a high state in 2017 reveals an anomalously soft X-ray spectrum and diminished X-ray luminosity compared to pre-2016 observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The great power offered by photoionization models of active galactic nuclei emission line regions has long been mitigated by the fact that very little is known about the spectral energy distribution (SED) between the Lyman limit, where intervening absorption becomes a problem, and  0.3 keV, where soft X-ray observations become possible. The emission lines themselves can, to some degree, be used to probe the SED, but only in the broadest terms. This paper employs a new generation of theoretical SEDs that are internally self-consistent, energy conserving, and tested against observations, to infer properties of the emission-line regions. The SEDs are given as a function of the Eddington ratio, allowing emission-line correlations to be investigated on a fundamental basis. We apply the simplest possible tests, based on the foundations of photoionization theory, to investigate the implications for the geometry of the emission-line region. The SEDs become more far-ultraviolet bright as the Eddington ratio increases, so the equivalent widths of recombination lines should also become larger, an effect that we quantify. The observed lack of correlation between Eddington ratio and equivalent width shows that the cloud covering factor must decrease as Eddington ratio increases. This would be consistent with recent models proposing that the broad-line region is a failed dusty wind off the accretion disc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anaerobic ammonium‐oxidizing (anammox) bacteria play a key role in the global nitrogen cycle and in nitrogenous wastewater treatment. The anammox bacteria ultrastructure is unique and distinctly different from that of other prokaryotic cells. The morphological structure of an organism is related to its function; however, research on the ultrastructure of intact anammox bacteria is lacking. In this study, in situ three‐dimensional nondestructive ultrastructure imaging of a whole anammox cell was performed using synchrotron soft X‐ray tomography (SXT) and the total variation‐based simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (TV‐SART). Statistical and quantitative analyses of the intact anammox bacteria were performed. High soft X‐ray absorption composition inside anammoxosome was detected and verified to be relevant to iron‐binding protein. A scanning soft X‐ray spectromicroscope was recently developed based mainly on the photon‐in/photon‐out measurement scheme for the investigation of local electronic structures on the surfaces and interfaces of advanced materials under conditions ranging from low vacuum to helium atmosphere. The apparatus was installed at the soft X‐ray beamline (BL17SU) at SPring‐8. The characteristic features of the apparatus are described in detail. The feasibility of this spectromicroscope was demonstrated using soft X‐ray undulator radiation. Here, based on these results, element‐specific two‐dimensional mapping and micro‐XAFS (X‐ray absorption fine structure) measurements are reported, as well as the observation of magnetic domain structures from using a reference sample of permalloy micro‐dot patterns fabricated on a silicon substrate, with modest spatial resolution (e.g. ∼500 nm). Then, the X‐ray radiation dose for Nafion® near the fluorine K‐edge is discussed as a typical example of material that is not radiation hardened against a focused X‐ray beam, for near future experiments. The optical design of a Hettrick–Underwood‐style soft X‐ray spectrometer with Wolter type 1 mirrors is presented. The spectrometer with a nominal length of 3.1 m can achieve a high resolving power (resolving power higher than 10000) in the soft X‐ray regime when a small source beam (<3 µm in the grating dispersion direction) and small pixel detector (5 µm effective pixel size) are used. Adding Wolter mirrors to the spectrometer before its dispersive elements can realize the spatial imaging capability, which finds applications in the spectroscopic studies of spatially dependent electronic structures in tandem catalysts, heterostructures, etc. In the pump–probe experiments where the pump beam perturbs the materials followed by the time‐delayed probe beam to reveal the transient evolution of electronic structures, the imaging capability of the Wolter mirrors can offer the pixel‐equivalent femtosecond time delay between the pump and probe beams when their wavefronts are not collinear. In combination with some special sample handing systems, such as liquid jets and droplets, the imaging capability can also be used to study the time‐dependent electronic structure of chemical transformation spanning multiple time domains from microseconds to nanoseconds. The proposed Wolter mirrors can also be adopted to the existing soft X‐ray spectrometers that use the Hettrick–Underwood optical scheme, expanding their capabilities in materials research. A lipid droplet (LD) core of a cell consists mainly of neutral lipids, triacylglycerols and/or steryl esters (SEs). The structuration of these lipids inside the core is still under debate. Lipid segregation inside LDs has been observed but is sometimes suggested to be an artefact of LD isolation and chemical fixation. LD imaging in their native state and in unaltered cellular environments appears essential to overcome these possible technical pitfalls. Here, imaging techniques for ultrastructural study of native LDs in cellulo are provided and it is shown that LDs are organized structures. Cryo soft X‐ray tomography and deep‐ultraviolet (DUV) transmittance imaging are showing a partitioning of SEs at the periphery of the LD core. Furthermore, DUV transmittance and tryptophan/tyrosine auto‐fluorescence imaging on living cells are combined to obtain complementary information on cell chemical contents. The unique diagnostic possibilities of X‐ray diffraction, small X‐ray scattering and phase‐contrast imaging techniques applied with high‐intensity coherent X‐ray synchrotron and X‐ray free‐electron laser radiation can only be fully realized if a sufficient dynamic range and/or spatial resolution of the detector is available. In this work, it is demonstrated that the use of lithium fluoride (LiF) as a photoluminescence (PL) imaging detector allows measuring of an X‐ray diffraction image with a dynamic range of ∼107 within the sub‐micrometre spatial resolution. At the PETRA III facility, the diffraction pattern created behind a circular aperture with a diameter of 5 µm irradiated by a beam with a photon energy of 500 eV was recorded on a LiF crystal. In the diffraction pattern, the accumulated dose was varied from 1.7 × 105 J cm−3 in the central maximum to 2 × 10−2 J cm−3 in the 16th maximum of diffraction fringes. The period of the last fringe was measured with 0.8 µm width. The PL response of the LiF crystal being used as a detector on the irradiation dose of 500 eV photons was evaluated. For the particular model of laser‐scanning confocal microscope Carl Zeiss LSM700, used for the readout of the PL signal, the calibration dependencies on the intensity of photopumping (excitation) radiation (λ = 488 nm) and the gain have been obtained. Accretion discs around stellarmass black holes (BHs) emit radiation peaking in the soft X-rays when the source is in the thermal state. The emerging photons are polarized and, for symmetry reasons, the polarization integrated over the source is expected to be either parallel or perpendicular to the (projected) disc symmetry axis, because of electron scattering in the disc. However, due to general relativity effects photon polarization vectors will rotate with respect to their original orientation, by an amount depending on both the BH spin and the observer's inclination. Hence, X-ray polarization measurements may provide important information about strong gravity effects around these sources. Along with the spectral and polarization properties of radiation which reaches directly the observer once emitted from the disc, in this paper we also include the contribution of returning radiation, i.e. photons that are bent by the strong BH gravity to return again on the disc, where they scatter until eventually escaping to infinity. A comparison between our results and those obtained in previous works by different authors shows an overall good agreement, despite the use of different code architectures. We finally consider the effects of absorption in the disc material by including more realistic albedo profiles for the disc surface. Our findings in this respect show that considering also the ionization state of the disc may deeply modify the behaviour of polarization observables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of time domain astronomy, we present an offline detection search of gamma-ray transients using a wild binary segmentation analysis called F-WBSB targeting both short and long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and covering the soft and hard gamma-ray bands. We use NASA Fermi /GBM archival data as a training and testing data set. This paper describes the analysis applied to the 12 NaI detectors of the Fermi /GBM instrument. This includes background removal, change-point detection that brackets the peaks of gamma-ray flares, the evaluation of significance for each individual GBM detector, and the combination of the results among the detectors. We also explain the calibration of the ∼ 10 parameters present in the method using one week of archival data. Finally, we present our detection performance result for 60 d of a blind search analysis with F-WBSB by comparing to both the onboard and offline GBM search as well as external events found by others surveys such as Swift -BAT. We detect 42/44 onboard GBM events but also other gamma-ray flares at a rate of 1 per hour in the 4–50 keV band. Our results show that F-WBSB is capable of recovering gamma-ray flares, including the detection of soft X-ray long transients. FWBSB offers an independent identification of GRBs in combination with methods for determining spectral and temporal properties of the transient as well as localization. This is particularly useful for increasing the GRB rate and that will help the joint detection with gravitational-wave events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last years, a peculiarity of some Be stars – their association with unusually hard and intense X-ray emission – was shown to extend beyond a mere few cases. In this paper, we continue our search for new cases by performing a limited survey of 18 Be stars using XMM–Newton. The targets were selected either on the basis of a previous X-ray detection (exosat,rosat , XMM -slew survey) without spectral information available or because of the presence of a peculiar spectral variability. Only two targets remain undetected in the new observations and three other stars display only faint and soft X-rays. Short-term and/or long-term variations were found in one third of the sample. The spectral characterization of the X-ray brightest 13 stars of the sample led to the discovery of three new γ Cas (HD 44458, HD 45995, and V558 Lyr), bringing the total to 25 known cases, and another γ Cas candidate (HD 120678), bringing the total to two. Observationally, the X-ray spectrum (0.5–10 keV) of low-level accreting neutron stars (NSs) (⁠|$L_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}\lesssim 10^{36}\ \rm erg \ s^{-1}$|⁠) can generally be well fitted by the model with two components, i.e., a thermal soft X-ray component plus a power-law component. Meanwhile, the fractional contribution of the power-law luminosity η (⁠|$\eta \equiv L^{\rm power\ law}_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}/L_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}$|⁠) varies with the X-ray luminosity |$L_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}$|⁠. In this paper, we systematically investigate the origin of such X-ray emission within the framework of the advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) around a weakly magnetized NS, in which the thermal soft X-ray component arises from the surface of the NS and the power-law component arises from the ADAF itself. We test the effects of the viscosity parameter α in the ADAF and thermalized parameter f th (describing the fraction of the ADAF energy released at the surface of the NS as thermal emission) on the relation of η versus |$L_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}$|⁠. It is found that η is nearly a constant (∼zero) with |$L_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}$| for different α with f th = 1, which is inconsistent with observations. Meanwhile, it is found that a change of f th can significantly change the relation of η versus |$L_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}$|⁠. By comparing with a sample of non-pulsating NS-low mass X-ray binaries probably dominated by low-level accretion on to NSs, it is found that a small value of f th ≲ 0.1 is needed to match the observed range of |$\eta \gtrsim 10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| in the diagram of η versus |$L_{\rm 0.5{-}10\,\rm kev}$|⁠. Finally, we argue that the small value of f th ≲ 0.1 implies that the radiative efficiency of NSs with an ADAF accretion may not be as high as the predicted result previously of |$\epsilon \sim {\dot{M} GM\over R_{*}}/{\dot{M} c^2}\sim 0.2$| despite the existence of the hard surface. Positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) potentially offers several advantages over positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), for example, no CT radiation dose and soft tissue images from MR acquired at the same time as the PET. However, obtaining accurate linear attenuation correction (LAC) factors for the lung remains difficult in PET/MRI. LACs depend on electron density and in the lung, these vary significantly both within an individual and from person to person. Current commercial practice is to use a single‐valued population‐based lung LAC, and better estimation is needed to improve quantification. Given the under‐appreciation of lung attenuation estimation as an issue, the inaccuracy of PET quantification due to the use of single‐valued lung LACs, the unique challenges of lung estimation, and the emerging status of PET/MRI scanners in lung disease, a review is timely. This paper highlights past and present methods, categorizing them into segmentation, atlas/mapping, and emission‐based schemes. Potential strategies for future developments are also presented. Charge exchange (CX) is a semi‐resonant recombination process that can lead to spectral line emission in the X‐ray band. It occurs in nearly any environment where hot plasma and cold gas interact: in the solar system, in comets and planetary atmospheres, and likely astrophysically, in, for example, supernova remnants and galaxy clusters. It also contributes to the soft X‐ray background. Accurate spectral modeling of CX is thus critical to properly interpreting our astrophysical observations, but the commonly used CX models in popular spectral fitting packages often rely on scaling equations and may not accurately describe observations or laboratory measurements. This paper introduces a method that can be applied to high‐resolution CX spectra to directly extract state‐selective CX cross‐sections for electron capture, a key parameter for properly simulating the resulting CX spectrum. Vavilov-Cherenkov emission and transition radiation are the well-known phenomena and find a broad application for different scientific communities. In the case of simultaneous generation of both types of radiation, there is a possibility of interference between radiation fields. Thus, the emitted radiation could possess both transition radiation and Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation properties, that is why it should be considered as hybrid radiation. In this paper, we present the results of the theoretical investigation of X-ray hybrid radiation. Using the polarization current approach and the atomic scattering factor formalism to account anomalous dispersion of the complex permittivity we study spectral-angular distributions and polarization states of X-ray hybrid radiation when a charge obliquely falls on a foil. The theoretical results greatly contribute to understanding of X-ray Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation as well as the development of the X-ray narrow band radiation sources based on Vavilov-Cherenkov effect. Jet pull is an observable designed to probe colour flow between jets. Thus far, a particular projection of the pull vector, the pull angle, has been employed to distinguish colour flow between jets produced by a colour singlet or an octet decay. This is of particular importance in order to separate the decay of a Higgs boson to a pair of bottom quarks from the QCD background. However, the pull angle is not infra-red and collinear (IRC) safe. In this paper we introduce IRC safe projections of the pull vector that exhibit good sensitivity to colour flow, while maintaining calculability. We calculate these distributions to next-to- leading logarithmic accuracy, in the context of the hadronic decay of a Higgs boson, and compare these results to Monte Carlo simulations. This study allows us to define an IRC safe version of the pull angle in terms of asymmetry distributions. Furthermore, because of their sensitivity to wide-angle soft radiation, we anticipate that these asymmetries can play an important role in assessing subleading colour correlations and their modelling in general-purpose Monte Carlo parton showers. In this paper, we report an integrated soft and transparent visuo-haptic interface, which is compatible with flexible devices and wearable gadgets. The visuo-haptic interface is composed of a touch-sensitive visual display based on polymer waveguides and a dielectric elastomer microactuators (DEMA) array. The touch-sensitive visual display, formed via continuative multistep photolithography, is a multilayered structure with a tactile-sensing layer stacked onto a visual-imaging layer. The dual-functional layer is thin (total thickness: <200 μm) and transparent (transmittance: as high as 90%). The DEMA forming a unit cell of the array is designed as multiple three-dimensional structures with silver nanowires (AgNWs) compliant electrode. When an electric voltage is applied across compliant electrodes formed on the sides, individual microactuators expand directly in an upward direction. Thanks to the vertically deformable design, the DEMA produces programmable large normal forces up to about 30 times of thresholds at a localized area. An output force response of the DEMA is reversible, fast (<1 ms delay), durable (output force degradation: <8% during a million cycles), and large enough to be used in human tactile interfaces. Due to the synergetic benefits from the functional layers, the visuo-haptic interface allows demonstration of programmable tactile response with visual information while being intimately attached on human skin. Stress concentrations and large ground deformations are sources of major concern during the construction of tunnel intersections. Such problems are even more critical in urban areas with buildings affected by the induced progressive ground movements. Therefore, particular considerations have to be taken into account for such projects. This paper deals with the effects of the underground openings on primary tunnels (tunnel intersection) using detailed three-dimensional finite-element models on a case study – Hakim tunnel project, Tehran, Iran. The effects of different stages of construction of intersections on stress distribution and ground deformation are evaluated. Moreover, the effective trailing distance of different faces of the tunnel from the centre of the intersection and the effect of tunnel drilling on internal forces of the shotcrete lining are discussed. The results showed that the values of the surface settlement remain almost unchanged at a distance approximately twice the equivalent diameter of the child tunnel from the intersection centreline. Also, the increase in the circumferential bending moments near the intersection is non-significant compared with the changes in the longitudinal bending moment. Elliptical polarized undulators (EPUs) are broadly used in the soft X‐ray energy range. They have the advantage of providing photons with both varied energy and polarization through adjustments to the value of the gap and/or shift magnet arrays in an undulator. Yet these adjustments may create a disturbance on the stability of the electron beam in a storage ring. To correct such a disturbance, it is necessary to establish a feed‐forward table of key nodes in the gap‐shift‐defined two‐dimensional parameter space. Such a table can only be scanned during machine‐study time. For a free‐walking mode, whereby an undulator is allowed to manoeuvre in the whole gap‐shift space, all the key nodes need to be scanned at the expense of a large amount of machine‐study time. This will greatly delay the employment of a full‐polarization capable undulator (especially circularly polarized). By analyzing data‐collecting patterns of user experiments, this paper defines a reduced set of key nodes in gap‐shift parameter space, with the number of key nodes to be scanned for feed‐forwarding scaled down to one‐third of the original; and introduces a new walking mode for EPUs: confined‐walking mode, whereby the undulator is manoeuvred only within the reduced set of key nodes. Such a mode is firstly realized on the EPUs at the DREAMLINE beamline at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). Under confined‐walking mode, the undulator movements are stable and there is no obvious disturbance to the electron beam with the feed‐forward system in operation. Successful experiments have been carried out using the circularly polarized light obtained via the new walking mode. The performance of cerium-doped Y3Al5O12 (Ce3+:YAG) often depends on cerium solubility achievable in a particular preparation technology. This solubility is kinetically affected by the synthesis process which allows for Ce3+ solubility to be generally much higher in a polycrystalline material than in single crystals. This work presents Y3−xCexAl5O12 polycrystalline thin films deposited by spin-coating where cerium is substituted on yttrium sites in an interval of 3.3–25 at%. Up to a concentration of 18 at%, the samples remain single-phase, which is the highest Ce3+ doping level in YAG published so far. Absorption, excitation and emission photoluminescence spectra are presented. The photoluminescence decays of the samples containing up to 6 at% cerium are comparable in radiative lifetime to those of Ce3+:YAG single crystals having the cerium concentration limit over one order smaller. The cathodoluminescence of the samples and soft X-ray nanosecond pulse-excited decays are examined. The scintillation decays appear much faster with a 1/e decay time well below 10 ns compared to that of a Ce3+:YAG single crystal which is 140 ns. After further optimization of the microstructure and the overall scintillation yield, sol–gel prepared Ce3+:YAG thin films are promising candidates for application in fast SEM scintillation detectors, currently intensively investigated in the scintillator technology field. This paper investigated the structural evolution of carbon deposition on a Ni/YSZ cermet of a SOFC. The Ni/YSZ cermet was heated in CH 4 /Ar environment with a thermobalance. It was observed that carbon deposition preferentially occurred on Ni particles, and the area on which carbon deposited touched the Ni/YSZ interfaces. Meanwhile, carbon deposition was not found on some of the Ni/YSZ interfaces. The Ni/Zr interfaces had various defects, suggesting that the defect pattern may be an important factor for carbon deposition. XANES spectra showed that structural defects and C–H bonds were present in the nascent carbon deposition. As carbon deposition advanced, a graphite structure developed and C–H bonds diminished. Reactants produced from CH 4 cracking converted to a nascent amorphous carbon at the Ni/YSZ interface, and then contributed to the growth of carbon deposition on Ni surfaces, leading to the deposition of carbon encapsulating the Ni particles. • Inter-particle contact evolution of a sheared sand was studied using X-ray μ CT. • The duration and stress-transmission characteristics of inter-particle contacts were studied. • The buckling of stress-transmission contacts was quantified. This paper presents the use of X-ray micro-tomography (X-ray μ CT) and image processing and analysis techniques to investigate the stress transmission and buckling of inter-particle contacts within a granular material. A triaxial testing of a miniature Leighton Buzzard sand (LBS) sample was carried out with full-field in-situ X-ray μ CT scanning. High-spatial-resolution CT images of the sample were acquired at several loading stages of the test. Image processing and analysis techniques were used to quantify the inter-particle contact evolution (contact gain, contact loss and contact movement), fabric, contact duration and buckling of stress-transmission contacts based on the CT images. The results indicated that contact gain and loss, and contact movement played two competing roles in determining the overall fabric evolution of the sample. Contacts with a longer duration were more likely to orient in the major principal stress direction and form a stress-transmission contact network. A gradual decrease in the buckling rate of the stress-transmission contacts was observed outside of the shear band, and a relatively stable buckling rate was observed within the shear band during the shear. Based on the the third‐order aberration theory of plane‐symmetric optical systems, this paper studies the effect on aberrations of the second‐order accuracy of aperture‐ray coordinates and the extrinsic aberrations of this kind of optical system; their calculation expressions are derived. The resultant aberration expressions are then applied to calculate the aberrations of two design examples of soft X‐ray and vacuum ultraviolet (XUV) optical systems; images are compared with ray‐tracing results using SHADOW software to validate the aberration expressions. A novel GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) system has been installed on experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) which is used for collecting the line integral of the soft X-ray radiation (SXR) through a pinhole-collimated Beryllium window. The sightline of the 2-D GEM system is tangential to the toroidal field. To obtain the local SXR emission, the Tikhonov algorithm is applied for the imaging of the poloidal cross section emission in the vacuum vessel. In the meanwhile, the L-curve method is used to find an optimized solution of the regularization parameters. The tomography reliability has been tested with a known emission function where the error is also discussed. The tomography method has been coded as a graphic user interface for the fast analysis of GEM experimental data. In this paper, we present a new electron capture detector based on a compact X-ray tube (X-ECD) for electron generation by soft X-ray radiation instead of using a radioactive source. ECDs are commonly used in many laboratories as standard GC detectors since their invention in the 1950s, especially for highly sensitive detection of halogenated substances, pesticides or other environmental pollutants. However, due to unsatisfactory alternatives, many ECDs are still used with radioactive β-emitters, which is difficult and expensive in most applications today due to legal restrictions. The new X-ECD contains a small X-ray tube for generating free electrons by ionizing the carrier gas like in radioactive ECDs. Thus, no additional dopants or special gases are required. The X-ECD has limits of detection in the ppt v range and shows linearity over a wide concentration range. Furthermore, the used X-ray tube shows good long-term stability. So far, we have operated the X-ray tube continuously for about one year without notable degradation. However, in case of future degradation, the X-ECD can still be operated with the same sensitivity by simple adjusting the set point current in constant current mode. This makes calibration robust against possible degradation of the X-ray tube. In combination with a conventional gas chromatograph, the X-ECD is able to detect halogenated hydrocarbons and even low volatile pesticides without any peak distortion such as tailing. Thereby a minimum detectability in the upper fg/µL range for Lindane was reached, which is similar when compared to radioactive ECDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we have successfully demonstrated that the directional control of the light output of the scintillator can be achieved by mixed-scale microstructures which integrate photonic crystals on the wavelength scale and microlens arrays on the micrometer scale. Compared to the reference sample, the mixed-scale microstructures can enhance the light output of the scintillator by 3.07-fold at the emergence angle of 35°. This enhancement in the light output exhibits both azimuthal angle and wavelength dependence. Our hybrid simulation and experimental characterization explain the physical mechanism behind the enhanced directional light output. This paper reviews our contributions and the development of an instrument for X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPED) and X-ray holography. XPED and X-ray holography have been extensively applied in materials analysis over the past decades. We made pioneering contributions in this area that fueled the development of the corresponding instrumentation and technology. In this review, we briefly discuss the theory of XPED and X-ray holography instrument, the genesis, and applications. The instruments comprise a high-power soft and hard X-ray source as well as a diffraction aperture; further, they are capable of high-angular-resolution detection and patterning. The applications of these instruments for practical surface analysis are also reviewed for ultrathin insulators, catalysts, and magnetic materials. When a nominally flat surface is bombarded with a broad ion beam at oblique incidence, nanoscale ripples often develop on the surface. For high angles of incidence, surfaces typically develop into a terraced form at the late stages of their time evolution. In the present work, this process is exploited to prevent unwanted smoothing of ordered terraced substrates during the deposition of thin films. A Si surface prepatterned with a 500 nm pitch binary grating structure was bombarded at oblique incidence by a low energy Xe + ion beam to establish an ordered terraced topography. Subsequently, Si/SiO2 bilayers were deposited on the surface, and further oblique incidence Xe+ bombardment was performed following the deposition of each Si layer to re-establish the ordered terraced topography. Self-organized processes, such as in the present work, that only require exposure of a surface to a plasma or ion source have the potential to provide a simple and inexpensive route for fabricating large-area nanostructured surfaces. Reversible lattice oxygen redox reactions offer the potential to enhance energy density and lower battery cathode costs. However, their widespread adoption faces obstacles like substantial voltage hysteresis and poor stability. The current research addresses these challenges by achieving a non-hysteresis, long-term stable oxygen redox reaction in the P3-type Na2/3Cu1/3Mn2/3O2. Here we show this is accomplished by forming spin singlet states during charge and discharge. Detailed analysis, including in-situ X-ray diffraction, shows highly reversible structural changes during cycling. In addition, local CuO6 Jahn-Teller distortions persist throughout, with dynamic Cu-O bond length variations. In-situ hard X-ray absorption and ex-situ soft X-ray absorption study, along with density function theory calculations, reveal two distinct charge compensation mechanisms at approximately 3.66 V and 3.99 V plateaus. Notably, we observe a Zhang-Rice-like singlet state during 3.99 V charging, offering an alternative charge compensation mechanism to stabilize the active oxygen redox reaction. Oxygen redox in transition metal oxides enhances the energy content of Na-ion batteries but is typically plagued by poor reversibility. Recent irradiance measurements from numerous heliophysics and astrophysics missions including Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), GOES, Kepler, TESS, Chandra, the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission, and NICER have provided critical input into understanding the physics of the most powerful transient events on the Sun and magnetically active stars:solar and stellar flares. The light curves of flare events from the Sun and stars show remarkably similar shapes, typically with a sharp rise and protracted decay phase. The duration of solar and stellar flares has been found to be correlated with the intensity of the event in some wavelengths, such as white light, but not in other wavelengths, such as soft X-rays, but it is not evident why this is the case. In this study, we use a radiative hydrodynamics code to examine factors affecting the duration of flare emission at various wavelengths. The duration of a light curve depends on the temperature of the plasma, the height in the atmosphere at which the emission forms, and the relative importance of cooling due to radiation, thermal conduction, and enthalpy flux. We find that there is a clear distinction between emission that forms low in the atmosphere and responds directly to heating, and emission that forms in the corona, indirectly responding to heating-induced chromospheric evaporation, a facet of the Neupert effect. Studying the interaction between solar flares and sunspot groups (SGs) is crucial for understanding and predicting solar activity. We examined the distribution, correlation, and flaring rates in the northern and southern hemispheres to reveal the relationship between different classes of soft X-ray (SXR) flares and different magnetic classifications of SGs. We discovered a significant north–south asymmetry in SXR flares and SG distribution over Solar Cycles (SC) 21–25. In the rising phase of SC24, the northern hemisphere's activity is significantly excessive. In the declining phase of SC24, the southern hemisphere's activity becomes significantly excessive. The total numbers of various SXR flares and SGs vary between the northern and southern hemispheres over the solar cycle. B-class flares are negatively correlated with all SGs at maximum but positively correlated at minimum. C-class flares correlate best with α and β SGs. M-class flares correlate best with β γ δ and β SGs. X-class flares correlate highest with β γ δ SGs. The flaring rate of each flare class is lowest for α SGs and highest for β γ δ SGs. The flaring rates are higher in the southern hemisphere than in the northern hemisphere. Our results demonstrate that solar flares originate from different sources of solar active regions; the high-energy flares tend to be caused by more complex magnetic fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scanning microscopies and spectroscopies like X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM), and Ptychography are of very high scientific importance as they can be employed in several research fields. Methodology and technology advances aim at analysing larger samples at better resolutions, improved sensitivities and higher acquisition speeds. The frontiers of those advances are in detectors, radiation sources, motors, but also in acquisition and analysis software together with general methodology improvements. We have recently introduced and fully implemented an intelligent scanning methodology based on compressive sensing, on a soft X-ray microscopy beamline. This demonstrated sparse low energy XRF scanning of dynamically chosen regions of interest in combination with STXM, yielding spectroimaging data in the megapixel-range and in shorter timeframes than were previously not feasible. This research has been further developed and has been applied to scientific applications in biology. The developments are mostly in the dynamic triggering decisional mechanism in order to incorporate modern Machine Learning (ML) but also in the suitable integration of the method in the control system, making it available for other beamlines and imaging techniques. On the applications front, the method was previously successfully used on different samples, from lung and ovarian human tissues to plant root sections. This manuscript introduces the latest methodology advances and demonstrates their applications in life and environmental sciences. Solar flares are complex phenomena emitting all types of electromagnetic radiation and accelerating particles on timescales of minutes, converting magnetic energy to thermal, radiative, and kinetic energy through magnetic reconnections. As a result, local plasma can be heated to temperatures in excess of 20 MK. During the soft X-ray (SXR) solar flare peak, the elemental abundance of low first ionization potential elements are typically observed to be depleted from coronal values. We explored the abundance variations using disk-integrated solar spectra from the Miniature X-ray Solar Spectrometer CubeSat-1 (MinXSS-1). MinXSS-1 is sensitive to the 1–12 keV energy range with an effective 0.25 keV FWHM resolution at 5.9 keV. During the year-long mission of MinXSS-1, between 2016 May and 2017 May, 21 flares with intermittent data downlinks were observed ranging from C to M class. We examine the time evolution of temperature, volume emission measure, and elemental abundances of Fe, Ca, Si, S, and Ar with CHIANTI spectral models near the peak SXR emission times observed in the MinXSS-1 data. We determined the average absolute abundance of A (Fe) = 7.81, A (Ca) = 6.84, A (S) = 7.28, A (Si) = 7.90, and A (Ar) = 6.56. These abundances are depleted from coronal values during the SXR peak compared to nonflaring times. The elemental abundance values that are depleted from their coronal values are consistent with the process of chromospheric evaporation, in which the lower atmospheric plasma fills the coronal loops. Lithium‐rich layered oxides (LLOs) are promising candidate cathode materials for safe and inexpensive high‐energy‐density Li‐ion batteries. However, oxygen dimers are formed from the cathode material through oxygen redox activity, which can result in morphological changes and structural transitions that cause performance deterioration and safety concerns. Herein, a flake‐like LLO is prepared and aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), in situ high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction (HT‐XRD), and soft X‐ray absorption spectrum (sXAS) are used to explore its crystal facet degradation behavior in terms of both thermal and electrochemical processes. Void‐induced degradation behavior of LLO in different facet reveals significant anisotropy at high voltage. Particle degradation originates from side facets, such as the (010) facet, while the close (003) facet is stable. These results are further understood through ab initio molecular dynamics calculations, which show that oxygen atoms are lost from the {010} facets. Therefore, the facet degradation process is that oxygen molecular formed in the interlayer and accumulated in the ab plane during heating, which result in crevice‐voids in the ab plane facets. The study reveals important aspects of the mechanism responsible for oxygen ‐anionic activity‐based degradation of LLO cathode materials used in lithium‐ion batteries. Dedicated experiments were performed in JET DTE2 plasmas for obtaining an α -particle bump-on-tail (BOT) distribution aiming at exciting Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs). Neutral beam injection-only heating with modulated power was used so that fusion-born α -particles were the only ions present in the MeV energy range in these DT plasmas. The beam power modulation on a time scale shorter than the α -particle slowing down time was chosen for modulating the α -particle source and thus sustaining a BOT in the α -particle distribution. High-frequency modes in the toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmode (TAE) frequency range and multiple short-lived modes in a wider frequency range have been detected in these DT discharges with interferometry, soft x-ray cameras, and reflectometry. The modes observed were localised close to the magnetic axis, and were not seen in the Mirnov coils. Analysis with the TRANSP and Fokker-Planck FIDIT codes confirms that α -particle distributions with BOT in energy were achieved during some time intervals in these discharges though no clear correlation was found between the times of the high-frequency mode excitation and the BOT time intervals. The combined magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) and kinetic modelling studies show that the high-frequency mode in the TAE frequency range is best fitted with a TAE of toroidal mode number n = 9. This mode is driven mostly by the on-axis beam ions while the smaller drive due to the pressure gradient of α -particles allows overcoming the marginal stability and exciting the mode (Oliver et al 2023 Nucl. Our study focuses on analysing the coronal, transition and chromospheric activity of four rapidly rotating stars located within 50 pc in the solar neighborhood. We have used the multi-wavelength capabilities of AstroSat to investigate the outer atmospheres of AB Dor, BO Mic, DG CVn and GJ 3331. These stars, classified as M and K type active stars, are known for their short rotation periods, leading to increased surface magnetic activity. Our soft X-ray observations provide the coronal properties, such as emission measures, temperatures and elemental coronal abundances. We reported the detection of X-ray flares from AB Dor, BO Mic and DG CVn, while UV light curves reveal flares in both BO Mic and DG CVn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A multichannel soft X-ray (SXR) array has been developed to measure the electron temperature in the Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). To estimate electron temperature using the two-filter method applied to SXR intensity, we designed a pinhole camera that has two photodiode arrays with different metallic filters. We also adopted a filter wheel and tested various filter parameters to find the optimal filter set. Through tests, the combination of aluminum and beryllium was found to be the most suitable for the current experimental conditions in VEST. The filtered SXR signals were acquired with a low-noise preamplifier, exhibiting sufficient signal-to-noise ratios for electron temperature estimation based on the intensity ratio of two signals obtained with different filters. The estimated electron temperature from the developed two-filter SXR array showed reasonably matched levels and consistent trends with Thomson scattering measurements. We use high-resolution zoom-in cosmological simulations to model outflow triggered by radiation and thermal drivers around the central mass accumulation during direct collapse within the dark matter (DM) halo. The maximal resolution is 1.3 × 10−5 pc, and no restrictions are put on the geometry of the inflow/outflow. The central mass is considered prior to the formation of the supermassive black hole seed at a redshift of z ∼ 15.9 and can constitute either a supermassive star (SMS) of ∼105 M ⊙ surrounded by a growing accretion disk or a self-gravitating disk. The radiation transfer is modeled using the ray-tracing algorithm. Due to the high accretion rate of ∼1 M ⊙ yr−1 determined by the DM halo, accretion is mildly supercritical, resulting in mildly supercritical luminosity that has only a limited effect on the accretion rate, with a duty cycle of ∼0.9. We observe a fast development of hot cavities, which quickly extend into polar funnels and expand dense shells. Within the funnels, fast winds, ∼103 km s−1, are mass-loaded by the accreting gas. We follow the expanding shells to ∼1 pc, when the shell velocity remains substantially (∼5 times) above the escape speed. The ionization cones formed by the central UV/X-ray completely ionize the cavities. Extrapolating the outflow properties shows that the halo material outside the shell will have difficulty stopping it. We therefore conclude that the expanding wind-driven shell will break out of the central parsec and will reach the halo virial radius. Finally, the anisotropic accretion flow on subparsec scales will attenuate the UV/soft X-rays on the H2. The interaction between metal particles and the oxide support, the so-called metal–support interaction, plays a critical role in the performance of heterogenous catalysts. Probing the dynamic evolution of these interactions under reactive gas atmospheres is crucial to comprehending the structure–performance relationship and eventually designing new catalysts with enhanced properties. Cobalt supported on TiO2 (Co/TiO2) is an industrially relevant catalyst applied in Fischer−Tropsch synthesis. Although it is widely acknowledged that Co/TiO2 is restructured during the reaction process, little is known about the impact of the specific gas phase environment at the material's surface. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopies are used to investigate in situ Co particles supported on pure and NaBH4-modified TiO2 under H2, O2, and CO2:H2 gas atmospheres. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission methods, which allows for simultaneous probing of the chemical composition of surface and subsurface layers, is one of the study's unique features. It is shown that under H2, cobalt particles are encapsulated below a stoichiometric TiO2 layer. This arrangement is preserved under CO2 hydrogenation conditions (i.e., CO2:H2), but changes rapidly upon exposure to O2.
