In this paper, we introduce two tempered linear and non-linear time series models, namely, an autoregressive tempered fractionally integrated moving average (ARTFIMA) with α -stable noise and ARTFIMA with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) noise (ARTFIMA-GARCH). We provide estimation procedures for the processes and explain the connection between ARTFIMA and their tempered continuous-time counterparts. Next, we demonstrate an application of the processes to modeling of heavy-tailed data from solar flare soft x-ray emissions. To this end, we study the solar flare data during a period of solar minimum, which occurred most recently in July, August, and September 2017. We use a two-state hidden Markov model to classify the data into two states (lower and higher activity) and to extract stationary trajectories. We do an end-to-end analysis and modeling of the solar flare data using both ARTFIMA and ARTFIMA-GARCH models and their non-tempered counterparts. We show through visual inspection and statistical tests that the ARTFIMA and ARTFIMA-GARCH models describe the data better than the ARFIMA and ARFIMA-GARCH, especially in the second state, which justifies that tempered processes can serve as the state-of-the-art approach to model signals originating from a power-law source with long memory effects. In this paper, structural, optical and electronic properties of ZnO nanoparticles were investigated with the variation in the annealing temperature. X-ray diffraction, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Spectroscopy, Absorption spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy and Soft X-ray spectroscopy techniques were invoked to investigate and gauge the effect of annealing temperature on these properties. Intact Hexagonal Wurtzite phase of the nanoparticles with increasing crystallinity and spherical shape with particle size between 20 nm and 23 nm [using both X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) and High-resolution Transmission of electron microscopy (HRTEM)], blue shift of absorption peak from 372 nm to 366 nm and Optical Band Gap from 3.24 eV to 3.17 eV (UV-Vis-NIR), narrowing of E 2 H mode in Raman Spectra; all indicated enhanced crystallinity with increased annealing temperature. Effects produced by the sole variable such as annealing temperature on the indicative parameters in a definite order catapult the annealing conditions as a significant candidate for customized properties. To have a deeper insight at the electronic levels, Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies of ZnO nanoparticles were undertaken. The analysis of Soft XAS spectra showed the change in number of O 2 p and Zn 4 p unoccupied states with increasing particle size and crystallinity of ZnO nanoparticles for varying annealing temperature. The paper presents the results of experiments with the compression of the plasma of double multiwire arrays of mixed composition and the generation of powerful soft X-ray radiation (SXR) pulses carried out on the powerful electrophysical facility Angara-5-1 at a discharge current of up to 3 MA. Based on the latest experimental data on the production rate of different plasmas (in μg/(cm2 ns)) [1] and on specificities of the dynamics of plasma compression in nested arrays [2], a nested array was designed, which makes it possible to obtain a high SXR peak power in comparison with the optimal (in terms of radiation power) designs of single and nested tungsten wire arrays. By selecting substances with different plasma production rates, it was possible to reduce the level of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities at the final stage of compression of the inner array. This made it possible to reduce the radiation pulse duration and increase the SXR power. Using implosion of nested arrays of mixed composition, consisting of plastic fibers and tungsten wires, shorter and more powerful SXR pulses with a maximum peak power ~10 TW with a pulse duration FWHM ~ 5 ns were obtained, compared to the parameters of SXR pulses upon compression of single tungsten arrays: ~ 5 TW and FWHM ~ 10 ns. Thus, we have shown the possibility of a twofold increase in the peak SXR power during compression of nested arrays under the conditions of our experiments by optimizing their design. One of the results of this work was finding the optimal parameters of the nested arrays and the prediction of the peak SXR power for experiments at powerful electrophysical facilities, differing from with substantially different levels of discharge current, 4–26 MA (Angara-5-1, Julong-1, and ZR). Herein we report the synthesis and structural characterization of three new europium containing coordination polymers: [Eu(terpy)(2,6-ndc)1.5]·H2O (Linus Pauling (LP) 1), [Eu(terpy)(1,4-ndc)(1,4-Hndc)] (LP-2), and [Eu(phen)(2,6-ndc)1.5]·DMF (LP-3). The title compounds were prepared hydro- or solvo-thermally and are constructed from either 1,4- or 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (ndc) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine (terpy) ligands. The X-ray diffraction data show LP-2 is two-dimensional while LP-1 and LP-3 are three-dimensional. Compounds LP-1 and LP-2 exhibit modest thermal stability up to 400 °C, while LP-3 was notably unstable when removed from its reaction media and prone to degradation. Despite the apparent porosity, nitrogen physisorption measurements conducted on LP-1 and LP-2 revealed lower than anticipated surface area and pore volumes of 1 m2 g−1 and 0.037 cm3 g−1 and 1 m2 g−1 and 0.015 cm3 g−1, respectively. Photoluminescence characterization of all three compounds was performed in the solid state and in all cases the results reveal bright Eu3+-based emission. The excitation spectra show the emissive properties arise from efficient ligand-to-metal resonance energy transfer. Featured Application: Cryo-nano tomography of biological samples with no landmarks in view. The high resolution of synchrotron cryo-nano tomography can be easily undermined by setup instabilities and sample stage deficiencies such as runout or backlash. At the cost of limiting the sample visibility, especially in the case of bio-specimens, high contrast nano-beads are often added to the solution to provide a set of landmarks for a manual alignment. However, the spatial distribution of these reference points within the sample is difficult to control, resulting in many datasets without a sufficient amount of such critical features for tracking. Fast automatic methods based on tomography consistency are thus desirable, especially for biological samples, where regular, high contrast features can be scarce. Current off-the-shelf implementations of such classes of algorithms are slow if used on a real-world high-resolution dataset. In this paper, we present a fast implementation of a consistency-based alignment algorithm especially tailored to a multi-GPU system. Our implementation is released as open-source. Materials processing with ultrafast lasers with pulse durations in the range between about 100 fs and 10 ps enable very promising and emerging high-tech applications. Moreover, the average power of such lasers is steadily increasing; multi kilowatt systems have been demonstrated in laboratories and will be ready for the market in the next few years, allowing a significantly increase in productivity. However, the implementation of ultrafast laser processes in applications is very challenging due to fundamental physical limitations. In this paper, the main limitations will be discussed. These include limitations resulting from the physical material properties such as the ablation depth and the optimal fluence, from processing parameters such as air-breakdown and heat accumulation, from the processing system such as thermal focus shift, and from legal regulations due to the potential emission of soft X-rays. Metals form an essential part of the Universe at all scales. Without metals we would not exist, and the Universe would look completely different. Metals are primarily produced via nuclear processes in stars, and spread out through winds or explosions, which pollute the surrounding space. The wanderings of metals in-and-out of astronomical objects are crucial in determining their own evolution and thus that of the Universe as a whole. Detecting metals and assessing their relative and absolute abundances and energetics can thus be used to trace the evolution of these cosmic components. The scope of this paper is to highlight the most important open astrophysical problems that will be central in the next decades and for which a deep understanding of the Universe's wandering metals, their physical and kinematical states, and their chemical composition represents the only viable solution. We report on the design and implementation of a new system used to characterize the energy-dependent x-ray transmission curve, Θ(E), through filters used in high-energy density physics diagnostics. Using an Amptek X-123-CdTe x-ray spectrometer together with a partially depleted silicon surface barrier detector, both the energy spectrum and total emission of an x-ray source have been accurately measured. By coupling these detectors with a custom PROTO-XRD x-ray source with interchangeable cathodes, accurate characterizations of Θ(E) for filters of varying materials and thicknesses have been obtained. The validity of the technique has been confirmed by accurately reproducing areal densities for high-purity filters with known x-ray transmission properties. Z-pinches have been explored as efficient soft x-ray sources for many years. To optimize x-ray emission, various z-pinch configurations were tested. This paper presents data obtained with a hybrid gas-puff z-pinch imploding onto on-axis wires on a microsecond, multi-megaampere GIT-12 generator. In our previous experiments, the hybrid gas puff, i.e., an inner deuterium gas puff surrounded by an outer hollow cylindrical plasma shell, was used to produce energetic protons, deuterons, and neutrons up to 60 MeV [Klir et al., New J. Phys. 22, 103036 (2020)]. The behavior of the hybrid gas-puff z-pinch on GIT-12 was interpreted as a high-density plasma opening switch with a microsecond conduction time, 3 MA conduction current, nanosecond opening, and up to 60 MV stand-off voltage. These properties can be employed to transfer the current into an on-axis load with a high rise rate. In the recent experiments on GIT-12, we therefore placed single or multiple aluminum wires on the axis of the hybrid gas-puff z-pinch. Before a current sheath arrived at the axis, a coronal plasma was seen around the wire. A rapid increase in x-ray radiation was observed when the coronal plasma imploded onto the axis. The coronal plasma implosion resulted in a long (2 cm), narrow (∼mm) column radiating in the Al K-shell lines. With the single Al wire of 80 μm diameter, the K-shell x-ray output reached 5.5 ± 0.8 kJ in a 0.6 ± 0.1 TW peak power and 7 ± 1 ns pulse. The higher K-shell yield of 12 ± 2 kJ and peak K-shell power of 0.7 ± 0.1 TW were achieved with four 38 μm diameter Al wires. (Their cross section formed the corners of a square with 1 mm side.) The presence of the wires on the axis significantly suppressed ion acceleration and neutron production. Deuterium-deuterium (DD) neutron yields of about 1.2 × 1011 were 20 times smaller than the yields produced in shots without any wire. The DD neutron yield was increased up to 4.5 × 1011 when the Al wire was replaced by a fiber from deuterated polyethylene. A forward modeling technique is developed for determining the characteristic features of observed MHD modes from the line-of-sight data of the soft x-ray (SXR) tomography diagnostics in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. In particular, forward modeling is used to evaluate the poloidal mode numbers m, radial location, poloidal rotation direction and ballooning character of the MHD modes. The poloidal mode structures have been modeled by the radially localized Gaussian-shaped emission regions rotating along the magnetic surfaces. In the present study the cases of rigid-shape emission regions and flexible emission regions are modeled. Various mode phase velocity dependences on the magnetic surface position are simulated. The modeled phase dynamics of line-integrated oscillations and the distribution of oscillation amplitudes are compared with the experimental signals of the SXR cameras which observe the plasma at various viewing angles in the poloidal cross-section. Application of this technique enables describing of the 1–50 kHz modes. In particular, in the discharge W7X-PID 20180918.045 three identified branches with the poloidal mode numbers m= 8, m= 10 and m= 11 localized at ρ ≈ 0.3 are rotating in the clockwise poloidal direction. The present paper reports the first application of the forward modeling technique to the data from the SXR diagnostics in W7-X. The high m-modes are identified by forward modeling in W7-X. The paper describes the behaviour of plasma within a MA plasma-focus with a novel electrode configuration, in which the anode and anti-anode were both equipped with conical tips. This configuration was applied to test the possibility of reducing the pinch axial dimensions during the radial compression of a current sheath. It made it possible to strengthen a dense plasma jet near the anode end, which ejected plasma into a bigger plasmoidal structure formed in the central pinch region. It did not allow forming an opposite anti-anode jet and stopped the axial motion of this structure. In plasma focus discharges with the deuterium filling, the decay of the anode jet and the corresponding plasmoid evolution were accompanied by the fusion-neutron production. Some results obtained with this configuration have also supported the hypothesis of the acceleration of fast electrons and ions at a release of the magnetic energy during magnetic reconnections in the organized dense plasma structures. This paper presents a new topology for a fully bidirectional soft-switching solid-state transformer (S4T). The minimal topology, featuring 12 main devices and a high-frequency transformer, does not use an intermediate dc voltage link, and provides sinusoidal input and output voltages. The S4T can be configured to interface with two- or multiterminal dc, single- or multiphase ac systems. An auxiliary resonant circuit creates zero-voltage-switching conditions for main devices from no-load to full-load, and helps manage interactions with circuit parasitic elements. We apply the recently developed formalism by Kosower, Maybee and O'Connell (KMOC) [12] to analyse the soft electromagnetic and soft gravitational radiation emitted by particles without spin in D ≥ 4 dimensions. We use this formalism in conjunction with quantum soft theorems to derive radiative electro-magnetic and gravitational fields in low frequency expansion and upto next to leading order in the coupling. We show that in all dimensions, the classical limit of sub-leading soft (photon and graviton) theorems is consistent with the classical soft theorems proved by Sen et al. in a series of papers. In particular in [11] Saha, Sahoo and Sen proved classical soft theorems for electro-magnetic and gravitational radiation in D = 4 dimensions. For the class of scattering processes that can be analyzed using KMOC formalism, we show that the classical limit of quantum soft theorems is consistent with the D = 4 classical soft theorems, paving the way for their proof from scattering amplitudes. The work describes a novel approach to the design of a fast, multichannel measurement system for plasma diagnostics [A. Wojenski et al., Fusion Eng. Des. 123, 727 (2016)]. Its main scope is to provide measurements of soft X-ray (SXR) emission during plasma phenomena at the W-Environment in Steady-state Tokamak (WEST), especially for monitoring and tracing tungsten impurities. This paper describes the vertical Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) camera installed at the WEST [M. Chernyshova et al., J. Instrument. 10, P10022 (2015)]. The designed GEM detector readout board has more than 100 channels, resulting in high-performance requirements for the data acquisition and processing system. The novel system construction approach is that the unit works on the raw signals providing a high quality of the data, especially in the scope of pileup effect analysis. In the case of doubtful results, the source data can be easily reviewed offline. The data selection and transmission are done in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) on the custom boards with the custom Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)-Express Gen2 switch that allows us to register signals from multiple FPGAs and then process the data by complex algorithms [G. Kasprowicz et al., J. Fusion Energy 38, 480 (2019)]. The firmware is replaceable and different working modes can be applied (some under verification): global trigger mode, high-speed data serialization, and extended signal registration. Low level optimized central processing unit software for data readout was also designed [P. Linczuk et al., J. Instrum. 14, C05001 (2019)]. The installation of the system is described due to complex system components' distribution. The first results of the successful acquisition of the plasma at the WEST are discussed. This paper presents the results of studying dispersed media formation during the electrical explosion of thin metal wires in vacuum by using low-current generators (∼1–10 kA). Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the composition and structure of the corresponding explosion products as well as to the problem of their visualization using simultaneous laser interferometry and shadow imaging at two wavelengths (1.064 µm and 0.532 µm). Our findings indicate the important role in the visualization of the explosion products that belongs to multiple scattering by submicron droplets of dense condensed matter, which are mixed with metal vapor. The hypothesis on the existence of submicron droplets in the products of exploding metal wires correlates with the results obtained by soft x-ray radiography combined with a laser probing technique. Taking into account the multiple scattering by submicron droplets, it is possible to significantly clarify the parameters of the explosion products visualized via laser probing techniques as well as to gain a deeper insight into the physics behind the electrical wire explosion. One aspect of the interaction between fast ions and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities is the fast ion transport. Coupled kink and tearing MHD instabilities have also been reported to cause fast ion transport. Recently, the 'kick' model has been developed to compute the evolution of the fast ion distribution from neutral beam injection using instabilities as phase-space resonance sources. The goal of this paper is to utilize the kick model to understand the physics of fast ion transport caused by the coupled kink and tearing modes. Soft x-ray diagnostics are used to identify the mode parameters in the National Spherical Torus Experiment. The comparison of neutron rates measured and computed from time-dependent TRANSP simulation with the kick model shows that the coupling of kink and tearing mode is important in determination of the fast ion transport. The numerical scan of the mode parameters shows that the relative phase of the kink and tearing modes and the overlapping of kink and tearing mode resonances in the phase space can affect the fast ion transport, suggesting that the synergy of the coupled modes may be causing the fast ion transport. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of some blazars exhibit an ultraviolet (UV) and/or soft X-ray excess that can be modeled with different radiation mechanisms. Polarization measurements of the UV/X-ray emission from blazars may provide new and unique information about the astrophysical environment of blazar jets, and could thus help to distinguish between different emission scenarios. In this paper, a new Monte Carlo code—Monte Carlo Applications for Partially Polarized Inverse External-Compton Scattering—for polarization-dependent Compton scattering is used to simulate the polarization signatures in a model where the UV/soft X-ray excess arises from the bulk Compton process. Predictions of the expected polarization signatures of Compton emission from the soft X-ray excess in the SED of AO 0235+164 and the UV excess in the SED of 3C 279 are made for upcoming and proposed polarimetry missions. Magnetars are highly magnetized neutron stars that are characterized by recurrent emission of short-duration bursts in soft gamma-rays/hard X-rays. Recently, FRB 200428 was found to be associated with an X-ray burst from a Galactic magnetar. Two fast radio bursts show mysterious periodic activity. However, it is unclear whether magnetar X-ray bursts are periodic phenomena. In this paper, we investigate the activity period of SGR 1806-20. More than 3000 short bursts observed by different telescopes are collected, including the observations of RXTE, HETE-2, ICE, and Konus. We consider the observation windows and divide the data into two subsamples to alleviate the effect of uneven sampling. The epoch-folding and Lomb–Scargle methods are used to derive the period of the short bursts. We find a possible period of about 398.20 ± 25.45 days, but other peaks exist in the periodograms. If the period is real, the connection between short bursts of magnetars and fast radio bursts should be investigated extensively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the energy dissipation of nonthermal electrons in the chromospheric flare ribbons during the peak time of a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite X-class flare (SOL2011-09-06) using desaturated Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) narrow-band images. The temperature distribution in emission measure, called the differential emission measure (DEM), derived from the EUV fluxes from the flare ribbons shows an increase in the emission measure up to a temperature around 9 × 106 K, followed by a steep decline at higher temperatures. In contrast, the flare loop reaches temperatures up to 27 × 106 K. This result is in agreement with previously reported single-temperature measurements using soft X-ray filter images, as well as DEM distributions reported for smaller flares obtained from EUV line observations. The main difference between small and large flares appears to be an increased emission measure in the flare ribbons, while the ribbon peak temperature is similar for all flares. This is different from the flare loop temperatures, where the hottest temperatures occur in the largest flares. However, the physically relevant quantity for energy dissipation, the energy content of the heated plasma as a function of temperature, does not need to peak at the same temperature as the DEM. The poorly constrained source thickness in radial extent of the flare ribbons has a significant impact on the shape of the differential thermal energy distribution. In particular, if the highest temperatures occur over a wide radial extent as "evaporating" plasma starts expending, the largest amount of energy could potentially be hidden above the peak temperature of the DEM. The paper deals with the problems of the deposition of multilayer Mo/Si mirrors (MLMs), reflecting in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range, onto microelectromechanical system (MEMS). Such MEMS micromirrors can be used to control beams of EUV and soft x-ray radiation, in particular, as spatial modulators of the radiation flux (dynamic masks) for maskless EUV lithography (EUVL). The requirements of the surfaces of such micromirrors for use in MEMS for maskless EUVL are analyzed. Experimental results on the roughness and the surface shapes of micromirrors commercially available MEMS with a pixel size of 8 x 8 µm are presented. The reflection coefficients of the Mo/Si MLMs and the distortions of the shapes of the micromirrors due to internal stresses in the films are studied. The reflection coefficient of Mo/Si MLMs, containing a proportion of molybdenum in the period, optimized for maximum reflection coefficient at a wavelength of 13.5 nm, was about 3%. Samples with stress-compensating Cr/Sc under-layers have overall reflection coefficients up to 36%; taking into account the losses associated with the gaps and topology of the micromirrors, the reflection coefficient was 43%. This result indicates the real possibility of creating dynamic masks based on commercially available MEMS micromirrors for maskless EUVL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A phase-merging enhanced harmonic generation free-electron laser (FEL) was proposed to increase the harmonic conversion efficiency of seeded FELs and promote the radiation wavelength towards the X-ray spectral region. However, this requires a specially designed transverse gradient undulator (TGU) as the modulator to couple the transverse and longitudinal phase space of the electron beam. In this paper, the generation of the phase-merging effect is explored using the natural field gradient of a normal planar undulator. In this method, a vertical dispersion on the electron beam is introduced and then the dispersed beam travels through a normal modulator in a vertical off-axis orbit where the vertical field gradient is selected properly in terms of the vertical dispersion strength and modulation amplitude. The phase-merging effect will be generated after passing through the dispersive chicane. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations for a seeded soft X-ray FEL based on parameters of the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL project are presented. Compared with a TGU modulator, using the natural gradient of a normal planar modulator has the distinct advantage that the gradient can be conveniently tuned in quite a large range by adjusting the beam orbit offset. The Soochow University Beamline, located at the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory in China, is a Soft X-ray beamline designed for studying energy-related materials and devices. It operates in the energy range of 45 eV–1100 eV and is specifically tailored for investigating Li, B, C, N, O, F K-edges, and most L-edges of transition metals. The beamline offers various capabilities, including X-ray absorption, photon in photon out, and in situ/operando studies of energy materials and devices in gas/liquid environments. It has been successful in producing high-quality research papers and is open to users worldwide. The beamline is a collaborative effort between Soochow University and the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, with funding from Soochow University. Solar flares result from the sudden release of energy deposited by subphotospheric motions into the magnetic field of the corona. The deposited energy accumulates secularly between events. One may interpret the observed event statistics as resulting from a state-dependent Poisson process in which the instantaneous flare rate is a function of the stress in the system and a flare becomes certain as the stress approaches a threshold set by the microphysics of the flare trigger. If the system is driven fast, and if the threshold is static and uniform globally, a cross-correlation is predicted between the size of a flare and the forward waiting time to the next flare. This cross-correlation is broadly absent from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) soft X-ray flare database. One also predicts higher cross-correlations in active regions where the shapes of the waiting time and size distributions match. Again, there is no evidence for such an association in the GOES data. The data imply at least one of the following: (i) the threshold at which a flare is triggered varies in time; (ii) the rate at which energy is driven into active regions varies in time; (iii) historical flare catalogs are incomplete; or (iv) the description of solar flares as resulting from a buildup and release of energy, once a threshold is reached, is incomplete. The characterization of X-ray focal spots is of great significance for the diagnosis and performance optimization of focusing systems. X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are the latest generation of X-ray sources with ultrahigh brilliance, ultrashort pulse duration and nearly full transverse coherence. Because each XFEL pulse is unique and has an ultrahigh peak intensity, it is difficult to characterize its focal spot size individually with full power. Herein, a method for characterizing the spot size at the focus position is proposed based on coherent diffraction imaging. A numerical simulation was conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The focal spot size of the Coherent Scattering and Imaging endstation at the Shanghai Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility was characterized using the method. The full width at half-maxima of the focal spot intensity and spot size in the horizontal and vertical directions were calculated to be 2.10 ± 0.24 mm and 2.00 ± 0.20 mm, respectively. The quest for ever-shorter optical pulses has been ongoing for over half a century. Although few-cycle pulses have been generated for nearly 40 years, pulse lengths below the single-cycle limit have remained an elusive goal for a long time. For this purpose, optical waveform synthesizers, generating high-energy, high-average-power pulses via coherent combination of multiple pulses covering different spectral regions, have been recently developed. They allow unprecedented control over the generated optical waveforms, spanning an extremely broad spectral range from ultraviolet to infrared. Such control allows for steering strong-field interactions with increased degrees of freedom. When driving high-harmonic generation, tailored waveforms can produce bright attosecond pulse trains and even isolated attosecond pulses with tunable spectra up to the soft X-ray range. In this paper recent progress on parametric and hollow-core fiber waveform synthesizers is discussed. Newly developed seeding schemes; absolute, relative, and spectral phase measurement; and control techniques suitable for synthesizers are described. The progress on serial and parallel waveform synthesis based on Ti:sapphire and Ytterbium laser systems and their latest applications in high-harmonic generation in gaseous and solid media, attosecond science, and laser wakefield acceleration is discussed. The Paul Scherrer Institute is implementing laser-based seeding in the soft X-ray beamline (Athos) of its free-electron laser, SwissFEL, to enhance the temporal and spectral properties of the delivered photon pulses. This technique requires, among other components, two identical modulators for coupling the electron beam with an external laser with a wavelength range between 260 and 1600 nm. Elliptical accretion disk models for tidal disruption events (TDEs) have been recently proposed and independently developed by two groups. Although these two models are characterized by a similar geometry, their physical properties differ considerably. In this paper, we further investigate the properties of the elliptical accretion disk of the nearly uniform distribution of eccentricity within the disk plane. Our results show that the elliptical accretion disks have distinctive hydrodynamic structures and spectral energy distributions, associated with TDEs. The soft X-ray photons generated at pericenter and nearby are trapped in the disk and advected around the ellipse because of large electron scattering opacity. They are absorbed and reprocessed into emission lines and low-frequency continuum via recombination and bremsstrahlung emission. Because of the rapid increase of bound–free and free–free opacities with radius, the low-frequency continuum photons become trapped in the disk at large radius and are advected through apocenter and back to the photon-trapping radius. Elliptical accretion disks predict sub-Eddington luminosities and emit mainly at the photon-trapping radius of thousands of Schwarzschild radii with a blackbody spectrum of nearly single temperature of typically about 3 × 104 K. Because of the self-regulation, the photon-trapping radius expands and contracts following the rise and fall of accretion rate. The radiation temperature is nearly independent of BH mass and accretion rate and varies weakly with the stellar mass and the viscosity parameter. This paper presents a statistical analysis of soft X-ray flares during the period January 1986 to June 2017 covering the last three solar cycles (SCs) 22, 23, and 24. We have analyzed the distribution of flare number, the relationship between the occurrence rate of soft X-ray flares and solar activity, and the duration of different intensity class (B, C, M, and X) solar flares during the period of investigation. The total occurrence rates of M and X class flares are 10.33%, 6.77%, and 5.45% in SCs 22, 23, and 24, respectively, which indicates that SC 22 is an SC with frequent large flares. Meanwhile, the M and X class flares are mainly concentrated in solar maximum (71.13%) in SC 22. The correlation coefficients between the annual number of flares and solar F10.7 index, X-ray flux in 0.1–0.8 nm, and EUV flux in 0.1–50 nm in SC 24 (0.91, 0.88, and 0.96) are greater than that in SCs 23 (0.87, 0.85, and 0.86) and 22 (0.88 and 0.81). The median values of the duration of M and X class flares are 39.00 and 71.50 minutes in SC 22, 21.00 and 26.50 minutes in SC 23, and 19.00 and 24.00 minutes in SC 24. The duration of M and X class flares in SC 22 is obviously longer than that in SCs 23 and 24. In addition, the duration of flares increases with the increase of flare intensity. The paper presents the results of processing of data on the soft X-ray solar radiation obtained by the PINGVIN-M instrument aboard the KORONAS-FOTON spacecraft in July 2009. The high sensitivity of the device, combined with effective compensation for the magnetospheric background over most of the orbit, made it possible to study in detail the evolution of X-ray radiation from the active region and its X-ray bursts—from microflares to class-C bursts. The analyzed data refer to the period of deep minimum solar activity, during which there was only one active region emitting in the soft X-ray range on the solar disk. This made it possible to study the characteristics of soft X-ray radiation in this region without additional background with a device that records radiation from the entire solar disk, which significantly increases the reliability of the estimates of the parameters of the time and energy spectra of X-ray radiation derived from experimental data. The Dual-zone Aperture X-ray Solar Spectrometer (DAXSS) was flown on 2018 June 18 on the NASA 36.336 sounding rocket flight and obtained the highest resolution to date for solar soft X-ray (SXR) spectra over a broad energy range. This observation was during a time with quiescent (nonflaring) small active regions on the solar disk and when the 10.7 cm radio flux (F10.7) was 75 solar flux units (1 sfu = 10–22 W m−2 Hz−1). The DAXSS instrument consists of a LASP-developed dual-zone aperture and a commercial X-ray spectrometer from Amptek that measures solar full-disk irradiance from 0.5 to 20 keV with a resolving power of 20 near 1 keV. This paper discusses the novel design of the spectrometer and the instrument characterization techniques. Additionally, the solar measurements obtained from the 2018 sounding rocket flight are analyzed using CHIANTI spectral models to fit the temperatures, emission measures, and relative elemental abundances of the solar corona plasma. The abundance of iron was found to be 35% higher than expected in the quiescent Sun's corona suggesting either that our spectral models require additional sophistication or that the underlying atomic database may require updates. Future long-term systematic observations of this spectral range are needed to provide further insight into the sources of coronal heating through modeling the changes of relative elemental abundances during developments of active regions and solar flaring events. In this paper, we propose a method for optimizing the design and composition of the anode membrane with a transmission-type target as part of a system of soft X-ray sources based on field-emission triodes for performing tasks in the field of X-ray nanolithography. It allows to prevent the degradation of the operating characteristics of the system when significant electrostatic deformation of the anode occurs under the influence of a control electric field in the inter-electrode space of the triodes. For this purpose, the inclusion of an additional control electrode in the system design is considered, which makes it possible to compensate for the deformation of the anode membrane to an acceptable level and thereby stabilize the operation of X-ray sources. A numerical model of the electrostatic deflection of the anode assembly in a modified design is developed, based on which the optimal composition and geometric parameters of the anode membrane with a compensating electrode are determined. In particular, the optimal distance between the anode membrane in the initial (undeformed) state and the compensating electrode was found (equal to 5 μm), at which a minimum voltage difference (about 1.15 kV) should be applied to these electrodes to prevent critical deflection of the membrane (0.72 μm with a membrane radius of 750 µm). It is also shown that, due to their extremely high hardness (>80 GPa), diamond-like films are the most promising material for the anode electrode. We present a design of a compact transmission water-window microscope based on the Z-pinching capillary discharge nitrogen plasma source. The microscope operates at wavelength of 2.88 nm (430 eV), and with its table-top dimensions provides an alternative to large-scale soft X-ray (SXR) microscope systems based on synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. The emitted soft X-ray radiation is filtered by a titanium foil and focused by an ellipsoidal condenser mirror into the sample plane. A Fresnel zone plate was used to create a transmission image of the sample onto a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. To assess the resolution of the microscope, we imaged a standard sample-copper mesh. The spatial resolution of the microscope is 75 nm at half-pitch, calculated via a 10–90% intensity knife-edge test. The applicability of the microscope is demonstrated by the imaging of green algae-Desmodesmus communis. Solar flares, along with other sun-originated events such as Coronal Mass Ejections, fast solar wind streams, and solar energetic particles are among the most relevant events in Space Weather. Moreover, solar flares are the most energetic processes that occur in our solar system. The in-depth study of their occurrence statistics, both over extended periods or during individual solar cycles, allows us to improve and constrain the basic physical models of their origin. Increasing the number of detected events, especially those of lower intensity, and the number of physical parameters that describe the detected flares is, therefore, a mandatory goal. In this paper, we present a computationally efficient algorithm for the detection of solar flares in the soft-X solar flux provided by the GOES (NASA/NOAA) satellite constellation. Our code produces a new flare catalogue increasing the number of events with respect to the official GOES list. In addition to increasing the number of identified events, the catalogue contains information such as: an estimate of the total energy released, start and end time of the event, possible overlap with other events, background level of the GOES X-ray emission close to the revealed event. After a detailed description of the detection algorithm, we carry out a preliminary analysis of the flares reported in our catalogue and compare our results with the official list of GOES for the period from 1998 to 2020. This study has systematically investigated the atomic number (Z) dependence of spectra from gallium-like (Ga-like) ions of heavy elements. We have mainly analyzed the experimental spectra recorded in high-temperature plasmas produced in the Large Helical Device (LHD) for various elements with atomic numbers from 57 onward. The measured wavelengths are compared with theoretical values calculated with a multi-configuration Dirac Fock code. As a result, we have successfully obtained Z-dependent wavelengths of several prominent transitions of Ga-like ions, including a magnetic dipole (M1) transition. Many of them have been experimentally identified for the first time in this study. Attosecond soft X-ray pulses are of great importance for the study of ultrafast electronic phenomena. In this paper, a feasible method is proposed to generate isolated fully coherent attosecond soft X-ray free electron laser via optical frequency beating. Two optical lasers with the opposite frequency chirps are used to induce a gradient frequency energy modulation, which helps to generate a gradually varied spacing electron pulse train. Subsequently, the undulator sections with electron beam delay lines are used to amplify the target ultra-short radiation. Numerical start-to-end simulations have been performed and the results demonstrate that an isolated soft X-ray pulse with the peak power of 330 GW and pulse duration of 620 as can be achieved by the proposed technique. Soft X‐ray imaging is a new method used to observe the structure of the Earth's magnetosphere. Reconstruction of the Earth's three‐dimensional (3‐D) magnetospheric structure from 2‐D soft X‐ray images is an important research topic in astronomical imaging and exploration. In this study, computed tomography (CT) is investigated for application to the planned Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE), where resulting images are collected at varying small angles. The restricted geometry of SMILE results in sparse projection data and reduced reconstruction quality. As such, a new algorithm is proposed, based on cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) and utilizing 3‐D generative adversarial networks (GAN) to supplement the 2‐D soft X‐ray images and increase the angular coverage of the projections. A complement optimization backpropagation network (COBN) is then used to reconstruct high‐quality 3‐D X‐ray emissivity profiles in the magnetosphere. A series of validation experiments were conducted in which the reconstructions were compared with synthetic results generated by the PPMLR‐MHD (an extended LagRangian version of the Piecewise Parabolic Method –MagnetoHydroDynamic) model under varying solar wind conditions. Results showed the supplemented profiles were more complete and accurate than the direct reconstructions, as measured by the peak signal‐to‐noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM). This suggests the proposed technique could be a viable approach to observing magnetosphere structure and variability. This report presents testing of a prototype cantilevered liquid-nitrogen-cooled silicon mirror. This mirror was designed to be the first mirror for the new soft X-ray beamlines to be built as part of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade. In 2014 the NGC 5548 Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign discovered a two-month anomaly when variations in the absorption and emission lines decorrelated from continuum variations. During this time the soft X-ray part of the intrinsic spectrum had been strongly absorbed by a line-of-sight (LOS) obscurer, which was interpreted as the upper part of a disk wind. Our first paper showed that changes in the LOS obscurer produces the decorrelation between the absorption lines and the continuum. A second study showed that the base of the wind shields the broad emission-line region (BLR), leading to the emission-line decorrelation. In that study, we proposed the wind is normally transparent with no effect on the spectrum. Changes in the wind properties alter its shielding and affect the spectral energy distribution (SED) striking the BLR, producing the observed decorrelations. In this work we investigate the impact of a translucent wind on the emission lines. We simulate the obscuration using XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Hubble Space Telescope observations to determine the physical characteristics of the wind. We find that a translucent wind can contribute a part of the He ii and Fe Kα emission. It has a modest optical depth to electron scattering, which explains the fainter far-side emission in the observed velocity-delay maps. The wind produces the very broad base seen in the UV emission lines and may also be present in the Fe Kα line. Our results highlight the importance of accounting for the effects of such winds in the analysis of the physics of the central engine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft x-ray (SXR) tomography is a key diagnostic method for impurity transport study in tokamaks since it allows for local impurity density reconstruction. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) radiative environment in deuterium–deuterium and deuterium–tritium phases will limit the choices of SXR detector technologies, and gas detectors are one of the most promising solutions. In this paper, we, thus, investigate the SXR tomography possibilities on ITER using Low Voltage Ionization Chambers (LVICs). The study contains the development of a LVIC synthetic diagnostic and its application to estimate the LVIC tomographic capabilities in an ITER D–T scenario, including the influence of LVIC parameters and noise in the measurements. Laser produced plasma (LPP) soft x-ray and extreme ultraviolet sources utilize various types of targets. Some of them are based on gaseous targets. The most important disadvantage of such targets is the very limited number of elements that can be used in the gaseous form under normal conditions, including chemical compounds in the gaseous state. In this paper, the authors propose a new type of target, constituting an extension of the gaseous target, namely aerosol target, based on solutions of solid chemical compounds in liquids. Unlike previous attempts to produce aerosol targets from overheated liquids, in our system, the target is created by injection of a mist, preformed in a dedicated cell, into the vacuum chamber. Such targets have many advantages: the emission spectra can be adjusted by choosing proper chemical compounds, the aerosol target is elongated, hence, the laser focus can be positioned at a relatively long distance from the nozzle outlet, its average density can be higher compared to gaseous targets. In this work, such a target and its usefulness for the LPP soft x-ray source was demonstrated. The target was investigated by the soft x-ray backlighting method. Its density distribution at the position of the laser focus was determined. The emission spectra from the soft x-ray range, corresponding to multiple charged ions, originating from the solvent and the diluted salt were measured. So far, the detailed experimental effect of the inductance on the X-ray yield in the Filippov-type plasma focus devices has not been documented in literature. In this paper, a 90 kJ Filippov-type plasma focus device is used to investigate the effect of three different external inductances (20, 40, and 60 nH) on the pinch current and neon soft X-ray (SXR) yield experimentally. The obtained results for the three inductances show that the 60 nH inductance produces maximum pinch current for high voltages (12–13 kV). The results also show that with using 60 nH external inductance, a larger fraction of maximum current is transferred into the plasma column. Experimental results show that the ratio of pinch to maximum currents for 60 nH is larger than for the two other external inductances. The effect of external inductance on the neon soft X-ray emission at constant pressure (0.25 Torr) and different voltages (10–13 kV) is investigated with a five-channel diode X‑ray spectrometer. Of the three external inductances, the average neon SXR yield has a maximum value at 11 kV for 40 and 60 nH, and 12 kV for 20 nH. The maximum neon SXR yield energy is 24.87 ± 2.52 J for the external inductance 20 nH at 12 kV and it is 23.62 ± 3.10 J for the external inductance 40 nH at 11 kV and 5.23 ± 1.15 J for external inductance 60 nH at 11 kV. Summary: This paper presents feasibility studies in utilizing graphics processing units (GPUs) as high‐performance computing hardware with front‐end electronics in high‐scale magnetic confinement thermal fusion experiments. The objective of the research is to provide scalable, high‐throughput, and low‐latency measurements for the runtime tokamak metallic impurities X‐ray diagnostic for the Tungsten Environment in Steady‐State Tokamak (WEST) reactor. The heterogeneous system of front‐end with field‐programmable gate arrays and the back‐end server was introduced to decompose workloads efficiently. It allows the comprehensive evaluation of CPUs and accelerators. In particular, a novel implementation of the back‐end algorithm for GPU with the performance analysis are presented. Fully coherent, soft X-ray attosecond pulses are now available through high-order harmonic generation (HHG); however, the output energy is insufficient for various applications, such as attosecond-scale soft X-ray nonlinear experiments, the seeding of soft X-ray free-electron lasers, attosecond-pump-attosecond-probe spectroscopies, and single-shot imaging. In this paper, we combine a newly developed TW class mid-infrared femtosecond laser and a loose focusing geometry for HHG. A soft X-ray harmonic beam up to the water window region is demonstrated, which is more than 100 times intense compared to previous works. We achieve a high conversion efficiency, low beam divergence and a significantly reduced medium gas pressure. As the first application, we demonstrate near edge X-ray absorption fine structure experiments with clear fine absorption spectra near the K- and L-edges observed. The robust energy scaling method on HHG opens the door for demonstrating single-shot absorption spectrum and live-cell imaging with a femtosecond time resolution. While high harmonic x-ray sources are well established sources for ultrafast spectroscopy, the decrease in efficiency towards higher energies limits their application. Here, a loose-focused, TW mid-IR laser is used to generate high harmonic soft x-rays with pulse energies of a few nJ in the water window and easy energy scaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents results of a search for helioseismic events (sunquakes) produced by M-X class solar flares during Solar Cycle 24. The search is performed by analyzing photospheric Dopplergrams from the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager. Among the total number of 500 M-X class flares, 94 helioseismic events were detected. Our analysis has shown that many strong sunquakes were produced by solar flares of low M class (M1–M5), while in some powerful X-class flares helioseismic waves were not observed or were weak. Our study has also revealed that only several active regions were characterized by the most efficient generation of helioseismic waves during flares. We found that the sunquake power correlates with the maximum value of the soft X-ray flux time derivative better than with the X-ray class, indicating that the sunquake mechanism is associated with high-energy particles. We also show that the seismically active flares are more impulsive than the flares without helioseismic perturbations. We present a new catalog of helioseismic solar flares, which opens opportunities for performing statistical studies to better understand the physics of sunquakes as well as the flare-energy release and transport. Small-amplitude quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) detected in soft X-ray emission are commonplace in many flares. To date, the underpinning processes resulting in the QPPs are unknown. In this paper, we attempt to constrain the prevalence of stationary QPPs in the largest statistical study to date, including a study of the relationship of QPP periods to the properties of the flaring active region, flare ribbons, and coronal mass ejection (CME) affiliation. We build upon the work of Inglis et al. and use a model comparison test to search for significant power in the Fourier spectra of lightcurves of the GOES 1–8 Å channel. We analyze all X-, M- and C-class flares of the past solar cycle, a total of 5519 flares, and search for periodicity in the 6–300 s timescale range. Approximately 46% of X-class, 29% of M-class, and 7% of C-class flares show evidence of stationary QPPs, with periods that follow a log-normal distribution peaked at 20 s. The QPP periods were found to be independent of flare magnitude; however, a positive correlation was found between QPP period and flare duration. No dependence of the QPP periods on the global active region properties was identified. A positive correlation was found between QPPs and ribbon properties, including unsigned magnetic flux, ribbon area, and ribbon separation distance. We found that both flares with and without an associated CME can host QPPs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for X- and M-class flares, decay-phase QPPs have statistically longer periods than impulsive-phase QPPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray pump/X-ray probe applications are made possible at X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facilities by generating two X-ray pulses with different wavelengths and controllable temporal delay. In order to enable this capability at the European XFEL, an upgrade project to equip the soft X-ray SASE3 beamline with a magnetic chicane is underway. In the present paper we describe the status of the project, its scientific focus and expected performance, including start-to-end simulations of the photon beam transport up to the sample, as well as recent experimental results demonstrating two-color lasing at photon energies of 805 eV + 835 eV and 910 eV + 950 eV. Additionally, we discuss methods to analyze the spectral properties and the intensity of the generated radiation to provide on-line diagnostics for future user experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we demonstrate the fabrication of refractive silicon microlens array with a large focal number and almost perfect spherical lens shape. Through a modified thermal reflow, photoresist microlens array of a large focal number is fabricated, which is then transferred into the silicon substrate by ion beam milling. To reach an accurate spherical lens profile, we both theoretically and experimentally study the practical factors that harm the pattern transfer fidelity, which mainly include the etching selectivity and faceting effect. Other secondary etching effects, such as the trenching effect and re-deposition effect, are also discussed. Based on these studies, a silicon microlens array with a focal number of 1.35 has been successfully obtained, with the profile error controlled well-below 0.121 μm, less than λ/6 within the whole infrared wavelength band. Besides, the fabricated microlens array exhibits a good uniformity and fine surface smoothness. The fabricated silicon microlens arrays can be applied in minatured infrared and terahertz imaging devices, or used as the master mould for soft lithography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advent of X-pinch based compact radiographs has significantly expanded the application field of pulsed radiography for diagnostics of fast processes. The key point here is the spatial resolution which these radiographs can provide. The method for determining the size of the soft x-ray (SXR) source based on diffraction imaging of opaque metallic wires and their comparison with the diffraction pattern calculated for an extended source in a given spectral range is presented in the paper. The X-pinch source sizes have been measured taking into account the sensitometric characteristic of the film and the scanner characteristics. By this method it has been shown that the diameter of the X-pinch radiation source for current rise rates in the range 0.7–1.35 kA/ns varies slightly for the spectral range hv >3 keV. Context. Large-amplitude, longitudinal filament oscillations triggered by solar flares have been well established in the literature. However, filament oscillations enhanced by flares have never been reported. Aims. In this paper we report the multiwavelength observations of a very long filament in active region (AR) 11112 on 2010 October 18. The filament was composed of two parts, the eastern part (EP) and the western part (WP). We focus on longitudinal oscillations of the EP, which were enhanced by two homologous C-class flares in the same AR. Methods. The filament was observed in Hff wavelength by the Global Oscillation Network Group and in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Line-of-sight magnetograms were provided by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board SDO. The global three-dimensional magnetic fields were obtained using the potential field source surface modeling. Soft X-ray light curves of the two flares were recorded by the GOES spacecraft. White light images of the corona were observed by the LASCO/C2 coronagraph on board SOHO. To reproduce part of the observations, we perform one-dimensional, hydrodynamic numerical simulations using the MPI-AMRVAC code. Results. The C1.3 flare was confined without a coronal mass ejection (CME). Both EP and WP of the filament were slightly disturbed and survived the flare. After 5 h, eruption of the WP generated a C2.6 flare and a narrow jet-like CME. Three oscillating threads (thda, thdb, thdc) are obviously identified in the EP, and their oscillations are naturally divided into three phases by the two flares. The initial amplitude ranges from 1.6 to 30Mm with a mean value of ~14 Mm. The period ranges from 34 to 73 min with a mean value of ~53 min. The curvature radii of the magnetic dips are estimated to be 29 to 133Mm with a mean value of ~74 Mm. The damping times ranges from ~62 to ~96 min with a mean value of ~82 min. The value of =P is between 1.2 and 1.8. For thda in the EP, the amplitudes were enhanced by the two flares from 6.1Mm to 6.8Mm after the C1.3 flare, and further to 21.4Mm after the C2.6 flare. The period variation as a result of perturbation from the flares was within 20%. The attenuation became faster after the C2.6 flare. Conclusions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of large-amplitude, longitudinal filament oscillations enhanced by flares. Numerical simulations reproduce the oscillations of thda very well. The simulated amplitudes and periods are close to the observed values, while the damping time in the last phase is longer, implying additional mechanisms should be taken into account apart from radiative loss.
