Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on how library and information science (LIS) as a field operationalizes the concept of organizational sustainability for managing digital resources, projects and infrastructures such as digital libraries and repositories over time. It introduces a nine dimensional framework for organizational sustainability in the digital cultural heritage community.Design/methodology/approach Content analysis of publications from three LIS databases (2000–2015).Findings Comparing the articles to the nine dimension framework shows that most LIS articles discuss technology, financial or management dimensions. Fewer articles describe disaster planning, assessment or policy dimensions.Research limitations/implications Three LIS databases might not include all relevant journals, conferences, white papers and other materials. The data set also did not include books; library management textbooks might include useful material on organizational sustainability. Claims about the prevalence of themes are subject to methodological limits of content analysis.Practical implications Organizations that steward digital collections need to be clear about what they mean when they are referring to organizational sustainability so that they can make appropriate decisions for future-proofing their collections. The analysis would also suggest for a greater need to consider the full range of dimensions of organizational sustainability.Originality/value By introducing a new nine dimensional framework of organizational sustainability the authors hope to promote more and better conversations within the LIS community about organizational sustainability. The authors hope these conversations will lead to productive action and improvements in the arrangements of people and work necessary to keep digital projects and services going over time, given ongoing challenges. Near threshold computing (NTC) has significant role in reducing the energy consumption of modern very large scale integrated circuits designs. However, NTC designs suffer from functional failures and performance loss. Understanding the characteristics of the functional failures and variability effects is of decisive importance in order to mitigate them, and get the utmost NTC benefits. This paper presents a comprehensive cross-layer reliability analysis framework to assess the effect of soft error, aging, and process variation in the operation of near threshold voltage caches. The objective is to quantify the reliability of different SRAM designs, evaluate voltage scaling potential of caches, and to find a reliability-performance optimal cache organization for an NTC microprocessor. In this paper, the soft error rate (SER) and static noise margin (SNM) of 6T and 8T SRAM cells and their dependencies on aging and process variation are investigated by considering device, circuit, and architecture level analysis. Their experimental results show that in NTC, process variation and aging-induced SNM degradation is $2.5{\boldsymbol \times }$ higher than in the super threshold domain while SER is $8{\boldsymbol \times }$ higher. At NTC, the use of 8T instead of 6T SRAM cells can reduce the system-level SNM and SER by 14% and 22%, respectively. Besides, we observe that we can find the right balance between performance and reliability by using an appropriate cache organization at NTC which is different from the super threshold. Although overweight and obese individuals are turning to Internet communities for social support for weight loss, there is no validated online instrument for measuring the subjective social support experiences of participants in these communities. The authors' objective was to determine whether an online version of a validated paper questionnaire, the Weight Management Support Inventory, is appropriate for measuring social support among members of Internet weight loss communities. The authors administered the paper and online versions of the questionnaire in random, counterbalanced fashion to 199 members of a large Internet weight loss community. Scores for the paper and online versions were comparable in between-subjects and within-subjects comparisons. Convergent validity is suggested by the finding that participants who posted messages on Internet forums several times per day reported more social support than those who posted less frequently. However, the instrumental (tangible) support items did not load significantly on the instrumental support factor, suggesting that instrumental support is not relevant to the social support exchanged among participants in these communities. The authors conclude that the online, modified Weight Management Support Inventory, without items for instrumental support, is an appropriate instrument for measuring social support for weight loss among members of Internet weight loss communities. Social bookmarking services have recently gained popularity among Web users. Whereas numerous studies provide a historical account of tagging systems, the authors use their analysis of a domain-specific social bookmarking service called CiteULike to reflect on two metrics for evaluating tagging behavior: tag growth and tag reuse. They examine the relationship between these two metrics and articulate design implications for enhancing social bookmarking services. The authors briefly reflect on their own work developing a social bookmarking service for CiteSeer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. Despite national support for electronic laboratory reporting (ELR), the transition from paper to electronic reporting has been slow both nationally and locally. We assessed the ELR experience of New York City's surveillance programs to identify barriers to ELR implementation and generalizable lessons about automated electronic notifiable disease surveillance. Methods. We conducted interviews with key staff of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to evaluate ELR implementation. A review of paper and ELR disease reports enabled a comparison of the reporting systems. Results. The completeness and timeliness of ELR were similar to, and sometimes better than, paper reporting for certain diseases. Incorporating electronic data into surveillance databases created new problems with data quality, shifted work demands, and required additional skills for data monitoring. ELR improved the handling of high-volume and time-sensitive diseases but did not completely automate reporting for diseases that required complicated assessments by staff. Conclusions. Although ELR streamlines data processing, electronic reporting has its own limitations. A more successful use of ELR can be achieved by understanding its strengths and limitations for different disease types. This paper includes country level virtual water data in an Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for water pollution. Virtual water accounts for the total amount of water required to produce a good in all stages of production. This paper constructs a water independence index, defined as the water required in domestic production divided by the amount of water required for all imported goods. Results suggest an increase in trade openness and importing water intensive goods may lower water pollution levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Economics blogs represent a significant change in the way research on development economics is discussed and disseminated, yet little is known about the impact of this new medium. Using surveys of development researchers and practitioners, along with experimental and nonexperimental techniques, we try to quantify some of the blogs' effects. We find that links from blogs cause a striking increase in the number of abstract views and downloads of economics papers. Furthermore, blogging raises the profile of the blogger and changes readers' perceptions about his or her institution. Finally, we find some suggestive evidence that a blog can increase knowledge of the topics it covers for the average, but not the marginal, reader. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effective implementation of pallet pooling system needs a strong information platform to support. Through the analysis of existing pallet pooling information platform (PPIP), the paper pointed out that the existing studies of PPIP are mainly based on traditional IT infrastructures and technologies which have software, hardware, resource utilization, and process restrictions. Because of the advantages of cloud computing technology like strong computing power, high flexibility, and low cost which meet the requirements of the PPIP well, this paper gave a PPIP architecture of two parts based on cloud computing: the users client and the cloud services. The cloud services include three layers, which are IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. The method of how to deploy PPIP based on cloud computing is proposed finally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of e-government and more specifically that of parliament, this paper tackles the problem of finding Members of Parliament (MPs) according to their profiles which have been built from their speeches in plenary or committee sessions. The paper presents a common solution for two problems: firstly, a member of the public who is concerned about a certain issue might want to know who the best MP is for dealing with their problem (recommending task); and secondly, each new piece of textual information that reaches the house must be correctly allocated to the appropriate MP according to its content (filtering task). This paper explores both these ways of searching for relevant people conceptually by encapsulating them into a single problem: that of searching for the relevant MP’s profile given an information need. Our research work proposes various profile construction methods (by selecting and weighting appropriate terms) and compares these using different retrieval models to evaluate their quality and suitability for different types of information needs in order to simulate real and common situations. This paper is a case study of a successful web community, I Love Music, from its inception in 2000 through to 2005, when the author stopped running it. While I Love Music and the extended community it generated (referred to as ILX throughout) were not designed for research purposes, they have a lot to teach researchers. . This paper focuses on two areas: a generalised model of the development of unique cultures within online communities (using ILX as an example), and the specific techniques moderators on ILX used to stimulate discussion. The paper is written in the context of a recent surge in interest among researchers in the possibilities offered by web communities. Specifically, the case study of ILX offers lessons for open-ended communities -- those designed to enjoy an indefinite life span rather than set up for the duration of a specific project. Examples of open-ended communities might include those built to engage customers and fans of specific brands, as well as more general 'research panels' designed to provide agencies or businesses with insight streams. 'Insight' here is meant in its broadest sense as an item of actionable information about consumers. The specific types of insights long-term communities generate might include new ideas or concepts, new behavioural information or new hypotheses about consumer behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The notion of a genre system typically connotes sequences of interrelated communicative genres. This paper suggests that we can find other types of relationships among genres. Data from a field study in a large emergency room illustrate how doctors, nurses, and clerical staff routinely combine document genres not only in sequences but also in various accumulations achieved through proximity and movement. The combinations of genres add flexibility to the emergency room staff's genre use and allow them to employ individual genres for several purposes. The data allow us to explore how organizational members manage the tension between a need for continuity in communicative practices and a need for flexibility in managing a jumble of paper-based and digital information systems. In addition, it demonstrates how end users often tinker with genres' media and form in the process of altering combinations among specific genres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As student evaluation of teaching (SET) instruments are increasingly administered online, research has found that the response rates have dropped significantly. Validity concerns have necessitated research that explores student motivation for completing SETs. This study uses Vroom's [(1964).Work and motivation(3rd ed.). New York, NY: John Wiley & Sons] expectancy theory to frame student focus group responses regarding their motivations for completing and not completing paper and online SETs. Results show that students consider the following outcomes when deciding whether to complete SETs: (a) course improvement, (b) appropriate instructor tenure and promotion, (c) accurate instructor ratings are available to students, (d) spending reasonable amount of time on SETs, (e) retaining anonymity, (f) avoiding social scrutiny, (g) earning points and releasing grades, and (h) being a good university citizen. Results show that the lower online response rate is largely due to students’ differing feelings of obligation in the 2 formats. Students also noted that in certain situations, students often answer SETs insincerely. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Data centers play an important role in today’s Internet development. Research to find scalable architecture and efficient routing algorithms for data center networks has gained popularity. The fat-tree architecture, which is essentially a folded version of a Clos network, has proved to be readily implementable and is scalable. In this paper, we investigate routing on a fat-tree network by deriving its global packing number and by presenting explicit algorithms for the construction of optimal, load-balanced routing solutions. Consider an optical network that employs wavelength division multiplexing in which every user node sets up a connection with every other user node. The global packing number is basically the number of wavelengths required by the network to support such a traffic load, under the restriction that each source-to-destination connection is assigned a wavelength that remains constant in the network. In mathematical terms, consider a bidirectional, simple graph, G and let N\subseteq V(G) be a set of nodes. A path system \mathcal P of G with respect to N consists of |N|(|N|-1) directed paths, one path to connect each of the source-destination node pairs in N . The global packing number of a path system , denoted by \Phi (G,N,\mathcal {P}) , is the minimum integer k to guarantee the existence of a mapping \phi :\mathcal P\to \1,2,\ldots, k\ , such that \phi (P)\neq \phi (\widehat P) if P and \widehat {P} have common arc(s). The global packing number of (G,N) , denoted by \Phi (G,N) , is defined to be the minimum \Phi (G,N,\mathcal {P}) among all possible path systems \mathcal {P} . In additional to wavelength division optical networks, this number also carries significance for networks employing time division multiple access. In this paper, we compute by explicit route construction the global packing number of (\text Tn,N) , where Tn denotes the topology of the n -ary fat-tree network, and $N$ is considered to be the set of all edge switches or the set of all supported hosts. We show that the constructed routes are load-balanced and require minimal link capacity at all network links. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The problem of the secure transmission of digital image has paid more and more attention to the network and this paper designs a special image encryption scheme. Image encryption scheme is designed based on the hyper chaos of generalized five-order Henon mapping and five-order cellular neural network (CNN) system. Firstly, the chaotic sequence , which is regarded as the initial conditions of CNN system, is generated by the five-order generalized Henon mapping. Then another chaotic sequence is produced by the CNN system. At last, the cipher image is generated by the transformation of random sequence and the original image. Toward the end, the paper makes the simulation experiment and draws a conclusion that the algorithm of image encryption has strong attack resistance, good safety, and suitable to spread in the network through analyzing the statistical characteristics of the image information entropy, correlation and histogram as well as the key space and the sensitivity. The Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) Dataset represents an unprecedented corpus which exposes a near complete collection of bibliographic resources for a specific research discipline, namely the connected areas of Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining. Covering over five years of scientific literature from the most relevant conferences and journals, the dataset provides Linked Data about bibliographic metadata as well as full text of the paper body. The latter was enabled through special licensing agreements with ACM for publications not yet available through open access. The dataset has been designed following established Linked Data pattern, reusing established vocabularies and providing links to established schemas and entity coreferences in related datasets. Given the temporal and topic coverage of the dataset, being a near-complete corpus of research publications of a particular discipline, it facilitates scientometric investigations, for instance, about the evolution of a scientific field over time, or correlations with other disciplines, what is documented through its usage in a wide range of scientific studies and applications. WeChat, both a location-based social network (LBSN) and an online social network (OSN), is an immensely popular application in China. In this paper we specifically focus on a popular WeChat sub-service, namely, the People Nearby service, which is exemplary of a find-and-flirt service, similar to those on Momo and Tinder. Specifically, the People Nearby service reads in the current geographic location of the device to locate a list of other people using WeChat who are in the same vicinity. The user can then request to establish a WeChat friendship relation with any of the users on the list. In this paper, we explore: (i) if one gender tends to use the People Nearby service more than another; (ii) if users of People Nearby are more anonymous than ordinary WeChat users; (iii) if ordinary WeChat users are more anonymous than Twitter users. We also take an in-depth examination of the user anonymity and demographics in a combined fashion and examine: (iv) if ordinary WeChat females are more anonymous than ordinary males; (v) if People Nearby females are more anonymous than People Nearby males. By answering these questions, we will gain significant insights into modern online dating and friendship creation, insights that should be able to inform sociologists as well as designers of future find-and-flirt services. Computer science (CS) is becoming an increasingly diverse domain. This paper reports on an initiative designed to introduce underrepresented populations to computing using an eclectic, multifaceted approach. As part of a yearlong computing course, students engage in Maker activities, participatory simulations, and computing projects that foreground the social and collaborative aspects of CS. Collectively, these activities are designed to introduce learners to the growing diversity of what CS looks like in the 21st century. This paper lays out the practical and theoretical motivations for the Computational Thinking for Girls (CT4G) project, specifically highlighting the use of Making through physical and social computing as ways to engage students in CS. A snapshot of one activity from the program is provided—Wearing the Web—in which students use open-hardware programmable badges to explore the underlying structure and technology that enables the Internet. Data from the first year of the CT4G program are presented to show the positive effects that this diverse introduction to CS is having on the students with respect to their attitudes toward CS. In this paper, we consider the problem of clustering and re-ranking web image search results so as to improve diversity at high ranks. We propose a novel ranking framework, namely cluster-constrained conditional Markov random walk (CCCMRW), which has two key steps: first, cluster images into topics, and then perform Markov random walk in an image graph conditioned on constraints of image cluster information. In order to cluster the retrieval results of web images, a novel graph clustering model is proposed in this paper. We explore the surrounding text to mine the correlations between words and images and therefore the correlations are used to improve clustering results. Two kinds of correlations, namely word to image and word to word correlations, are mainly considered. As a standard text process technique, tf-idf method cannot measure the correlation of word to image directly. Therefore, we propose to combine tf-idf method with a novel feature of word, namely visibility, to infer the word-to-image correlation. By latent Dirichlet allocation model, we define a topic relevance function to compute the weights of word-to-word correlations. Taking word to image correlations as heterogeneous links and word-to-word correlations as homogeneous links, graph clustering algorithms, such as complex graph clustering and spectral co-clustering, are respectively used to cluster images into topics in this paper. In order to perform CCCMRW, a two-layer image graph is constructed with image cluster nodes as upper layer added to a base image graph. Conditioned on the image cluster information from upper layer, Markov random walk is constrained to incline to walk across different image clusters, so as to give high rank scores to images of different topics and therefore gain the diversity. Encouraging clustering and re-ranking outputs on Google image search results are reported in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the results of a quasi-experimental study which was conducted with a view to determining the effect of an intervention in the form of the application of teacher-designed Internet-based resources (i.e., websites, podcasts, movie clips) that students could use autonomously on the development of pronunciation of the English regular past tense -ed ending. The sample consisted of 45 Polish secondary school learners. Participants were divided into three groups, two treatment and one control. The intervention spanned two weeks. The lessons in treatment group 1 were conducted by means of online resources and those in treatment group 2 were carried out in a traditional way (i.e., without autonomous recourse to computer-assisted pronunciation teaching). The students in the control group did not receive any instruction related to the pronunciation feature in question over that time. The data were gathered by means of perception and production tests administered before (pretest) and after (immediate and delayed posttests) the treatment, and subjected to quantitative analysis. The results, supported by the participants' evaluation of the two types of pedagogic intervention, indicate that although the effects of the experimental treatments proved to be comparable, the use of online resources produced more durable gains and was more favorably evaluated by learners. This provides a rationale for using computer technology as a tool for enhancing traditional teaching of English pronunciation in secondary school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The generation of characteristic values for the stability of the control system is the main focus of this paper. For the generation of these values, a system for evaluating the state of the parameters of the control system must be incorporated, in the context of the work of certain devices in the control system based on the management of the computer system. The focus of the analysis of system parameters, simulation and parameter change is based on the use of the Matlab application. The purpose of this paper is to incorporate applications that can be included in the management process, obtaining results, and adequately reflecting the obtained values, graphs and finding the corresponding concrete structure to see the flow of a process as closely as possible. The goal of the paper is the computer system management through the application, specifically the use of Matlab. The paper will also deal with the collection and systematization of data in a database- application, which is connected to applications such as Matlab, to save and to create connections with other platforms in the framework of production and service; such is the internet platform and the deployment of a web browser that gives a more generalized direction in terms of use, service and management of resources at different distances - locations that have direct access through web technologies or other computer network resources. Through the Matlab application, the state of the system can be analyzed by changing the program parameters, which creates a certain view of the state, looking at the view of the graphs-curves, of the device until its activation. Therefore, all this includes the way of integrated management of some systems and applications to create a more optimized effectiveness of the technological process [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author discusses a notion that many maps may be visually engaging but reveal very little data. He uses the word cloud as a metaphor for many current online mapping, which he describes as very visual and engaging but ultimately lacking in purposeful information. He asserts that a lot of online mapping fails because of the use of third-party map services to produce such maps, giving little thought to design, layout or the message to be communicated.

ELECTRONIC journals ,NUMERIC databases ,COMPUTER network resources ,RATE of return ,EDUCATIONAL quality - Abstract
Digital resources and services have become an essential part of the growing collection of libraries all over the world, and their relevance and importance in the higher academic and research institutions have been increasing day by day. Library users also embrace the electronic resources quite enthusiastically considering their multitude of advantages. On the other hand, the collection, development and management of e-resources demand a lot of financial commitments on the part of the institutions, and as a result, they expect and encourage a fair return on investment. Therefore it has become mandatory on the part of libraries to assess the usage and usability of their procured/subscribed resources. Usage statistics are now considered as one of the most prominent measuring tools that help the libraries to examine the usage of online resources and ensuring their optimum utilization. At the same time, the collection of usage reports from the vast number of e-resources is a challenging task for the librarians. E-resources exist in multiple formats such as e-journals, e-books; aggregated full-text databases, company, industry, statistical databases etc. and the usage data collected for these resources vary from each other. There exist many ways and methods to collect usage reports of e-resources. It can either be downloaded manually from the e-resources website, using administrative credentials provided by the publishers or automatically harvested through SUSHI (Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative). This paper attempts to draw the attention of information professionals on the enormous potential in the usage of eresources by the libraries. It presents the IIM Kozhikode library’s experience in obtaining the usage statistics of eresources and attempts to examine how these reports are used as a tool to assess the usage of e-resources. This paper puts forth the argument that the e-resources usage statistics acts as an indicator of the knowledge consumption of the organization, as evidenced by the relative growth in its research output, quality of education being imparted and its placement records. Many countries in the Eastern and Southern African Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (ESARBICA) have embraced electronic government as a matter of priority. This is a programme where government business is conducted through use of different information communication technologies. Unfortunately, many members of the organization, including Zimbabwe, do not have archival legislation that specifically caters for the creation, use, maintenance and disposal of electronic records. This has resulted in records management practitioners resorting to a hit or miss approach when managing electronic records. This paper highlights the inadequacies of the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) Act (1986) as well as the challenges facing records management practitioners in as far as the management of electronic records is concerned. The survey research method was used to collect data specifically on inadequacies of the NAZ Act and challenges faced by information practitioners in using the act to deal with the creation, use, maintenance and disposal of electronic records. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims at proposing a new framework for the classification of RFID deployments in fashion and apparel retailing. The framework encompasses several different use cases (UCs) pursued by fashion and apparel retailers in the last decade, and updates, expands and goes beyond what has already been presented in the related literature. DESIGN, METHODOLOGY, APPROACH: We carried out a comprehensive literature review on RFID deployments in fashion and apparel retail. We searched different sources of information, that is, scientific papers, conferences and seminars proceedings, websites, magazines, newspapers etc., up to 160 papers that were carefully analysed and organised in a structured database. This data set also comprehends information from confidential projects. We analyse contents on the level of single RFID projects, that is, feasibility studies, proofs of concept, pilots or deployments. For each project, we determine what specific UCs were at stake. Eventually, the framework of all possible RFID UCs emerged from the analysis, and we set up a panel of industry partners to validate the framework using the Delphi method. FINDINGS:We structured the new framework along two levels: first, 6 categories were identified (i.e., level 1 use cases). Each category was then detailed, resulting in a total of 18 specific UCs (i.e., level 2 use cases). Each level 2 UC corresponds to a very specific objective pursued by an RFID implementation. For each UC, we propose a set of business metrics to evaluate deployment success as well as benefits achieved. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: From a practitioner's perspective, the framework offers a comprehensive and well-structured overview of the cost- and the revenue-related potentials of RFID implementations in the industry. Researchers, on the other hand, may use the framework to identify opportunities for further research regarding RFID deployments in retailing. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: Our framework is based on the current body of literature, and complements prior studies, which served as the starting point for our research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
