Porous carbons are the active materials of choice for supercapacitor applications because of their power capability, long-term cycle stability, and wide operating temperatures. However, the development of carbon active materials with improved physicochemical and electrochemical properties is generally carried out via time-consuming and cost-ineffective experimental processes. In this regard, machine-learning technology provides a data-driven approach to examine previously reported research works to find the critical features for developing ideal carbon materials for supercapacitors. Here, we report the design of a machine-learning-derived activation strategy that uses sodium amide and cross-linked polymer precursors to synthesize highly porous carbons (i.e., with specific surface areas > 4000 m2/g). Tuning the pore size and oxygen content of the carbonaceous materials, we report a highly porous carbon-base electrode with 0.7 mg/cm2 of electrode mass loading that exhibits a high specific capacitance of 610 F/g in 1 M H2SO4. This result approaches the specific capacitance of a porous carbon electrode predicted by the machine learning approach. We also investigate the charge storage mechanism and electrolyte transport properties via step potential electrochemical spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements.

Most lithium batteries offer a wide range of applications. However, safety issues are still an unresolved issue for several applications. To solve the safety issue of Li-ion batteries, solid polymer electrolyte is a promising candidate to replace commercial liquid electrolyte. A 4-arm star poly(ethylene oxide) polymer with LiTFSI salt as an electrolyte was studied. The dynamics of this polymer were explored with the Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering technique. Furthermore, the influence of temperature and Li salt concentration on the polymer dynamics was investigated. The dynamics of the polymer ends of the arm show much higher flexibility than the core parts making those types of polymers attractive for further studies in battery research.

A recently proposed wide-angle velocity selector (WAVES) device for choosing the velocity of detected neutrons after they have been scattered by the sample paves the way for inverted geometry neutron spectrometers with continuously adjustable final neutron wavelength. BWAVES broadband inverted geometry spectrometer proposed for the Second Target Station at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is designed using WAVES to simultaneously probe dynamic processes spanning 4.5 decades in time (energy transfer). This makes BWAVES a uniquely flexible instrument which can be viewed as either a quasielasitc neutron scattering (QENS) spectrometer with a practically unlimited (overlapping with the vibrational excitations) range of energy transfers, or a broadband inelastic vibrational neutron spectrometer with QENS capabilities, including a range of accessible momentum transfer (Q) and a sufficiently high energy resolution at the elastic line. The new capabilities offered by BWAVES will expand the application of neutron scattering in ways not possible with existing neutron spectrometers.

Temperature-dependent scans of the neutron scattering intensity are commonly employed in high energy-resolution quasielastic measurements. Besides serving as a useful diagnostic tool for identifying the temperature range that could give rise to a measurable relaxation signal, such scans of the “elastic” (resolution-defined) intensity could be employed for determining the temperature at which the relaxation time in the system becomes equal to the resolution-defined characteristic time of the spectrometer measurement. This is a model-independent alternative to the “traditional” approach, when, at a given measurement temperature, the relaxation time in the system is obtained from fitting the full dynamic spectra with a model scattering function. Here we introduce the temperature-dependent scan of the neutron spin-echo signal amplitude. Using a well-characterized system with a complex relaxation pattern, we demonstrate that the relaxation time obtained from the approach proposed herein maps well on the previous “traditionally” measured relaxation times. Thus, despite monitoring a different variable (neutron spin-echo signal amplitude vs. neutron scattering intensity), the benefits of the model-free temperature-dependent scan approach, traditionally utilized in neutron time-of-flight and backscattering experiments, can be extended to measurements of the very slow relaxations assessable only by high-resolution neutron spin-echo.

ICE-MAN is a modeling and analysis workbench for multi-modal studies, designed with neutron science in mind. It streamlines the workflow between different experimental techniques, computer modeling, and databases and reduces the time and learning curve needed to access them thus making a holistic approach to data interpretation more amenable and efficient.

This research endeavors to link the physical and chemical characteristics of select polymer hydrogels to differences in printability when used as printing aids in cement-based printing pastes. A variety of experimental probes including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), NMR-diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) using neutron backscattering spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), along with molecular dynamic simulations, were used. Conjectures based on objective measures of printability and physical and chemical-molecular characteristics of the polymer gels are emerging that should help target printing aid selection and design, and mix formulation. Molecular simulations were shown to link higher hydrogen bond probability and larger radius of gyration to higher viscosity gels. Furthermore, the higher viscosity gels also produced higher elastic properties, as measured by neutron backscattering spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The wavelengths of neutrons available at neutron scattering facilities are comparable with intra- and inter-molecular distances, while their energies are comparable with molecular vibrational energies, making such neutrons highly suitable for studies of molecular-level dynamics. The unmistakable trend in neutron spectroscopy has been towards measurements of systems of greater complexity. Several decades of studies of dynamics using neutron scattering have witnessed a progression from measurements of solids to liquids to protein complexes and biomembranes, which may exhibit properties characteristic of both solids and liquids. Over the last two decades, the frontier of complexity amenable to neutron spectroscopy studies has reached the level of cells. Considering this a baseline for neutron spectroscopy of systems of the utmost biological complexity, we briefly review what has been learned to date from neutron scattering studies at the cellular level and then discuss in more detail the recent strides into neutron spectroscopy of tissues and whole multicellular organisms. We have used quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the structure, dynamics, and phase transitions of water interacting with superhydrophilic CuO surfaces that not only possess a strong affinity for water but also a "grass-like" topography that is rough on both micro- and nanoscales. Here, we report quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements on two samples differing in water content at five temperatures below 280 K. The QENS spectra show water undergoing two different types of diffusive motion near the CuO surfaces: a "slow" translational diffusion occurring on a nanosecond time scale and a faster rotational motion. Further from the surfaces, there is "fast" translational diffusion comparable in rate to that of bulk supercooled water and the rotational motion occurring in the interfacial water. Analysis of the QENS spectra supports wetting of water to the CuO blades as seen in electron microscopy images. In addition, we observe an anomalous temperature dependence of the QENS spectra on cooling from 270 to 230 K with features consistent with a liquid–liquid phase transition. We suggest that the solvent-like properties of the coexisting bulk-like water in our CuO samples are a significant factor in determining the temperature dependence of the interfacial water's dynamics. Our results are compared with those obtained from two well-studied substrate classes: (1) silicas that contain ordered cylindrical nanopores but have weaker hydrophilicity and (2) nanoparticles of other transition-metal oxides, such as TiO2, which share the strong hydrophilicity of our samples but lack their porosity. The severity of the cancer statistics around the globe and the complexity involving the behavior of cancer cells inevitably calls for contributions from multidisciplinary areas of research. As such, materials science became a powerful asset to support biological research in comprehending the macro and microscopic behavior of cancer cells and untangling factors that may contribute to their progression or remission. The contributions of cellular water dynamics in this process have always been debated and, in recent years, experimental works performed with Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) brought new perspectives to these discussions. In this review, we address these works and highlight the value of QENS in comprehending the role played by water molecules in tumor cells and their response to external agents, particularly chemotherapy drugs. In addition, this paper provides an overview of QENS intended for scientists with different backgrounds and comments on the possibilities to be explored with the next-generation spectrometers under construction. Room-temperature ionic liquids are promising candidates for applications ranging from electrolytes for energy storage devices to lubricants for food and cellulose processing to compounds for pharmaceutics, biotransformation, and biopreservation. Due to the ion complexity, many room-temperature ionic liquids readily form amorphous phases upon cooling, even at modest rates. Here, we investigate two commonly studied imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, as well as their mixtures, to demonstrate how the complex interplay between the crystalline and amorphous phases is affected by the processing conditions, such as thermal history, liquid mixing, and applied pressure. We show that quantum tunneling in the cation methyl groups, measured by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering, can be used to probe the order-disorder in room-temperature ionic liquids (crystalline vs amorphous state) that develops as a result of variable processing conditions. Relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit frequency-dispersion of their dielectric permittivity peak as a function of temperature, the origin of which has been widely debated. Microscopic understanding of such behavior for polymeric ferroelectrics has presented new challenges since unlike traditional ceramic ferroelectrics, dielectric relaxation in polymers is a consequence of short-range molecular dynamics that are difficult to measure directly. Here, through careful analysis of atomic-level H-atom dynamics as determined by Quasi-elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS), we show that short-range molecular dynamics within crystalline domains cannot explain the macroscopic frequency-dispersion of dielectric properties observed in prototypical polyvinylidene-fluoride (PVDF)-based relaxor ferroelectrics. Instead, from multiscale quantitative microstructural characterization, a clear correlation between the amount of crystalline-amorphous interfaces and dielectric relaxation is observed, which indicates that such interfaces play a central role. These results provide critical insights into the role of atomic and microscopic structures towards relaxor behavior in ferroelectric polymers, which will be important for their future design. The calorimetric glass-transition temperature of water is 136 K, but extrapolation of thermodynamic and relaxation properties of water from ambient temperature to below its homogeneous nucleation temperature TH = 235 K predicts divergence at TS = 228 K. The “no-man’s land” between the TH and glassy water crystallization temperature of 150 K, which is encountered on warming up from the vitrified state, precludes a straightforward reconciliation of the two incompatible temperature dependences of water properties, above 235 K and below 150 K. The addition of lithium chloride to water allows bypassing both TH and TS on cooling, resulting in the dynamics with no features except the calorimetric glass transition, still at 136 K. We show that lithium chloride prevents hydrogen-bonding network completion in water on cooling, as manifested, in particular, in changing microscopic diffusion mechanism of the water molecules. Thus thermodynamic and relaxation peculiarities exhibited by pure water on cooling to its glass transition, such as the existence of the TH and TS, must be associated specifically with the hydrogen-bonding network. Background and Objectives: As an mRNA-based vaccine, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has stringent cold storage requirements to preserve functionality of the mRNA active ingredient. To this end, lipid components of the vaccine formulation play an important role in stabilizing and protecting the mRNA molecule for long-term storage. The purpose of the current study was to measure molecular-level dynamics as a function of temperature in the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to gain microscopic insight into its thermal stability. Materials and Methods: We used quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering to probe (1) the vaccine extracted from the manufacturer-supplied vials and (2) unperturbed vaccine in the original manufacturer-supplied vials. The latter measurement was possible due to the high penetrative power of neutrons. Results: Upon warming from the low-temperature frozen state, the vaccine in its original form exhibits two-step melting, indicative of a two-phase morphology. Once the melting is completed (above 0 °C), vaccine re-freezing cannot restore its original two-phase state. This observation is corroborated by the changes in the molecular vibrational spectra. The molecular-level mobility measured in the resulting single-phase state of the re-frozen vaccine greatly exceeds the mobility measured in the original vaccine. Conclusions: Even a brief melting (above 0 °C) leads to an irreversible alteration of the two-phase morphology of the original vaccine formulation. Re-freezing of the vaccine results in a one-phase morphology with much increased molecular-level mobility compared to that in the original vaccine, suggesting irreversible deterioration of the vaccine's in-storage stability. Neutron scattering can be used to distinguish between the vibrational spectra characteristic of the original and deteriorated vaccines contained in the unperturbed original manufacturer-supplied vials. Atsufficiently high temperatures, the center-of-mass microscopicdiffusion dynamics of liquids is characterized by a single component,often with weak temperature dependence. In this regime, the effectivecage made by the neighbor particles cannot be sustained and readilybreaks down, enabling long-range diffusion. As the temperature isdecreased, the cage relaxation becomes impeded, leading to a higherviscosity with more pronounced temperature dependence. On the microscopicscale, the sustained caging effect leads to a separation between afaster in-cage relaxation component and a slower cage-breaking relaxationcomponent. The evidence for the separate dynamic components, as opposedto a single stretched component, is provided by quasielastic neutronscattering experiments. We use a simple method to evaluate the extentof the dynamic components separation as a function of temperaturein a group of related aromatic molecular liquids. We find that, regardlessof the glass-forming capabilities or lack thereof, progressively morepronounced separation between the in-cage and cage-breaking dynamiccomponents develops on cooling down as the ratio of Tb/T, where Tbis the boiling temperature, increases. This reflects the microscopicmechanism behind the empirical rule for the glass forming capabilitybased on the ratio of boiling and melting temperatures, Tb/Tm. When a liquid’s Tb/Tmhappens tobe high, the liquid can readily be supercooled below its Tmbecause the liquid’s microscopic relaxation dynamicsis already impeded at Tm, as evidencedby a sustained caging effect manifested through the separation ofthe in-cage and cage-breaking dynamic components. Our findings suggestcertain universality in the temperature dependence of the microscopicdiffusion dynamics in molecular liquids, regardless of their glass-formingcapabilities. Unless the insufficiently low (with respect to Tb) melting temperature, Tm, intervenes and makes crystallization thermodynamically favorablewhen cage-breaking is still unimpeded and the structural relaxationis fast, the liquid is likely to become supercooled. Using quasielastic neutron scatteringspectroscopy, we measuredthe averaged translational diffusion of water in solutions of biologicallyrelevant salts, NaCl, a kosmotrope, and KCl, a chaotrope. The analysisrevealed the striking difference in the influence of these ions onwater dynamics. While the averaged water diffusion slows down in thepresence of the structure making (kosmotrope) Na+ion,the diffusion becomes faster in the presence of the structure breaking(chaotrope) K+ion. The latter means that, despite strongCoulombic interactions introduced by the K+ions, theirdisruption of the hydrogen-bonding network is so significant thatit leads to faster diffusion of the water molecules. Cyanobacteria are prokaryotes that can use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into cellular fuel. Knowledge of the organization of the membrane systems in cyanobacteria is critical to understanding the metabolic processes in these organisms. We examined the wild-type strain of Synechocystis sp.PCC6803 and a series of mutants with altered light-harvesting phycobilisome antenna systems for changes in thylakoid membrane architecture under different conditions. Using small-angle neutron scattering, it was possible to resolve correlation distances of subcellular structures in live cells on the nanometer scale and capture dynamic light-induced changes to these distances. Measurements made from samples with varied scattering contrasts confirmed that these distances could be attributed to the thylakoid lamellar system. We found that the changes to the thylakoid system were reversible between light- and dark-adapted states, demonstrating a robust structural flexibility in the architecture of cyanobacterial cells. Chemical disruption of photosynthetic electron transfer diminished these changes, confirming the involvement of the photosynthetic apparatus. We have correlated these findings with electron microscopy data to understand the origin of the changes in the membranes and found that light induces an expansion in the center-to-center distances between the thylakoid membrane layers. Phonons are quasi-particles, observed as lattice vibrations in periodic materials, that often dampen in the presence of structural perturbations. Nevertheless, phonon-like collective excitations exist in highly complex systems, such as proteins, although the origin of such collective motions has remained elusive. Here we present a picture of temperature and hydration dependence of collective excitations in green fluorescent protein (GFP) obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. Our results provide evidence that such excitations can be used as a measure of flexibility/softness and are possibly associated with the protein's activity. Polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) are promising candidates for a broad range of technologies. However, the relatively low conductivity of PolyILs at room temperature has strongly limited their applications. In this work, we provide new insights into the roles of various microscopic parameters controlling ion transport in these polymers, which are crucial for their rational design and practical applications. Using broadband dielectric spectroscopy and neutron and light scattering techniques, we found a clear connection between the activation energy for conductivity, fast dynamics, and high-frequency shear modulus in PolyILs at their glass transition temperature ( T g ). In particular, our analysis reveals a correlation between conductivity and the amplitude of fast picosecond fluctuations at T g , suggesting the possible involvement of fast dynamics in lowering the energy barrier for ion conductivity. We also demonstrate that both the activation energy for ion transport and the amplitude of the fast fluctuations depend on the high-frequency shear moduli of PolyILs, thus identifying a practically important parameter for tuning conductivity. The parameters recognized in this work and their connection to the ionic conductivity of PolyILs set the stage for a deeper understanding of the mechanism of ion transport in PolyILs in the glassy state.

Living planarian flatworms were probed using quasielastic neutron scattering to measure, on the pico-to-nanosecond time scale and nanometer length scale, microscopic diffusion of water and cell constituents in the planarians. Measurable microscopic diffusivities were surprisingly well defined in such a complex system as living animals. The overall variation in the microscopic diffusivity of cell constituents was found to be far lower than the variation in the microscopic diffusivity of water in planarians in a temperature range of 284.5 to 304.1 K.

Lithium-beryllium metal hydrides, which are structurally related to their parent compound, BeH 2 , offer the highest hydrogen storage capacity by weight among the metal hydrides (15.93 wt. % of hydrogen for LiBeH 3 ). Challenging synthesis protocols have precluded conclusive determination of their crystallographic structure to date, but here we analyze directly the hydrogen hopping mechanisms in BeH 2 and LiBeH 3 using quasielastic neutron scattering, which is especially sensitive to single-particle dynamics of hydrogen. We find that, unlike its parent compound BeH 2 , lithium-beryllium hydride LiBeH 3 exhibits a sharp increase in hydrogen mobility above 265 K, so dramatic that it can be viewed as melting of hydrogen sublattice. We perform comparative analysis of hydrogen jump mechanisms observed in BeH 2 and LiBeH 3 over a broad temperature range. As microscopic diffusivity of hydrogen is directly related to its macroscopic kinetics, a transition in LiBeH 3 so close to ambient temperature may offer a straightforward and effective mechanism to influence hydrogen uptake and release in this very lightweight hydrogen storage compound.

Interactions of water with cellulose are of both fundamental and technological importance. Here, we characterize the properties of water associated with cellulose using deuterium labeling, neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulation. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering provided quantitative details about the dynamical relaxation processes that occur and was supported by structural characterization using small-angle neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction. We can unambiguously detect two populations of water associated with cellulose. The first is "non-freezing bound" water that gradually becomes mobile with increasing temperature and can be related to surface water. The second population is consistent with confined water that abruptly becomes mobile at ~260 K, and can be attributed to water that accumulates in the narrow spaces between the microfibrils. Quantitative analysis of the QENS data showed that, at 250 K, the water diffusion coefficient was 0.85 ± 0.04 × 10 -10  m 2 sec -1 and increased to 1.77 ± 0.09 × 10 -10  m 2 sec -1 at 265 K. MD simulations are in excellent agreement with the experiments and support the interpretation that water associated with cellulose exists in two dynamical populations. Our results provide clarity to previous work investigating the states of bound water and provide a new approach for probing water interactions with lignocellulose materials.

We report a novel production method for uranium oxyfluoride [(UO2)7F14(H2O)7]·4H2O, referred to as structure D. Structure D is produced as a product of hydrating anhydrous uranyl fluoride, UO2F2, through the gas phase at ambient temperatures followed by desiccation by equilibration with a dry environment. We follow the structure of [(UO2)7F14(H2O)7]·4H2O through an intermediate, liquid-like phase, wherein the coordination number of the uranyl ion is reduced to 5 (from 6 in the anhydrous structure), and a water molecule binds as an equatorial ligand to the uranyl ion. Quasielastic neutron scattering results compare well with previous measurements of mineral hydrates. The two groups of structurally distinct water molecules in D perform restricted motion on a length scale commensurate with the O-H bond (r = 0.92 Å). The more tightly bound equatorial ligand waters rotate slower (Dr = 2.2 ps(-1)) than their hydrogen-bonded partners (Dr = 28.7 ps(-1)).

Dynamics of water confined in ∼5 Å diameter channels of beryl and cordierite single crystals were studied by using inelastic (INS) and quasielastic (QENS) neutron scattering. The INS spectra for both samples were similar and showed that there are no hydrogen bonds acting on water molecule, which experiences strong anisotropic potential, steep along the channels and very soft perpendicular to it. The high-resolution (3.4 μeV) QENS data revealed gradual freezing out of the water molecule dynamics for both minerals at temperatures below about 80 K when the scattering momentum transfer was parallel to the channels, but not when it was perpendicular to the channels. The QENS study with medium energy resolution (0.25 meV) of the beryl with the scattering momentum transfer along the channels showed gradual freezing out of water molecule dynamics at temperatures below about 200 K, whereas at higher temperatures the data could be described as 2-fold rotational jumps about the axis coinciding with the direction of the dipole moment (that is, perpendicular to the channels), with a residence time of 5.5 ps at 225 K. The energy resolution dependence of the apparent dynamics freezing temperature suggests gradual slowing down of the rotational jumps as the temperature is decreased, until the associated QENS broadening can no longer be detected, rather than actual freezing.
