Over the last decade, the debate on tourism has become remarkably polarised. For some, tourism represents the stalwart of neoliberal capitalism, nested in strongly skewed power relations, characterized by exclusionary and resource-degrading agency, which need taming. For others, it remains genuinely coherent with its original promise to be a 'force for good'. This dichotomy is per se an eye-opener for critical reflections. Drawing on anthropology and critical geography literature and informed by longitudinal qualitative ethnographical research conducted in Barcelona between 2017 and 2024, this paper provides a set of critical reflections on the inconvenient truths about mass tourism, touristification and overtourism in the context of the current rising of anti-tourism activism in Southern European destinations. By offering a bird's eye view on the well traversed debate, the purpose of this state of the art paper is to stimulate further critical considerations on the uneven dynamics of tourism capital accumulation, the deep-rooted inequalities associated with it and the effects of tourism excesses, with mass tourism being investigated as a phenomenon, touristification as a process and overtourism as a regime. "Northern Gateway": Film, Tourism, and the Canadian Vacation by Dominique Brégent-Heald is a comprehensive study of the use of film to promote Canada as a tourist destination. The book explores the history of Canadian government agencies using film to attract American tourists, a topic that has been overlooked by historians. The author examines a wide range of films, from government-sponsored productions to amateur films, and covers the period from the 1890s to the 1950s. While the study does not provide a comparative analysis with other countries, it convincingly demonstrates the early adoption of film as a tourism promotion tool in Canada. The book also highlights the role of key individuals and their networking efforts in shaping the industry. However, it leaves some aspects of tourism film history underdeveloped and raises questions about the competing interests of different levels of government and the portrayal of Canada's diverse population in tourism films. Literature has demonstrated that online reviews from tourism-specific websites and other electronic channels (e.g., TripAdvisor) do influence tourists' decisions in all aspects. At this global era, it is relatively important to analyse the eWOM related research for obtaining more in-depth understanding and applications to this new mode of communication. The total of 110 SSCI-listed research articles related to eWOM studies since 2004 was retrieved from 18 refereed journals, all of which listed in the Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. By conducting content analysis approach, all research papers were systematically reviewed and analysed which generate 18 significant topical issues. As this review paper tries to retrospect and discuss the development and influential factors of eWOM, the study unveils the application in the hospitality industry and research opportunities for the future. The author argues that the different dimensions and complexities of volunteer tourism need further examination throughout a wide field of theory. He says that he used the practice of international youth development and ecotourism to develop the context of volunteer tourism. He adds that structuration theory can constrain the thoughts and actions of individuals if the notion of the duality of structure is to be accepted. This paper analyses the regional economic impacts of COVID-19 in Ireland. The results show regional labour market impacts were related to pre-existing economic structures rather than infection rates. Drivers of the employment shock were found to be regional specialisms in tourism focused sectors. Cushions were provided by regional specialisms in agriculture, healthcare and the knowledge intensive service sectors. For more rural regions that appeared more resilient to the labour market shock, cushions were likely provided by employment in slower growth potential sectors. During the recovery phase, these cushions can become anchors contributing to regional divergence. Consequently, some regions less severely impacted by the pandemic shock may, in fact, face more difficult structural challenges in the longer term. The pandemic has thus exacerbated pre-existing structural issues that are likely related to the observed regional economic divergence and findings of regional development traps since the recovery from the previous recessionary period of the 2010s. The broad implication is that that the regional recovery from the pandemic will not be based purely on short term COVID-19 exposure. In general terms, regional policy should look beyond the initial pandemic shocks to the key underlying development issues. A central point here is that there are no quick transformational fixes rather long-term structural imbalances need to be met. This paper explores the interconnections and relative importance of seven determinants implicit in the development of sustainable tourism indicators. These determinants provide a framework for understanding the process of indicator selection for sustainable tourism. This research has suggested that some of the implicit determinants may be interconnected and some may be more important than others. The paper reports findings from twelve stakeholder groups in two Scottish National Parks which are engaged in developing sustainable tourism indicators. It is important for park authorities to be aware of the different views of stakeholder groups on the issues surrounding indicator selection and development and this research provided an opportunity for such groups to be consulted. The paper will examine the relative importance each group placed on the implicit determinants and consider possible reasons for between-group differences. Analysis will also focus on the existence of linkages between individual implicit determinants. The paper concludes that different typologies of stakeholder groups exist, affecting both the interpretation of, and importance attributed to, the determinants and that the framework as a whole serves to be more than the sum of its parts. This paper reviews a content analysis of papers published in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, the only journal exclusively devoted to sustainable tourism research over the past 15 years (1993-2007). Based on a detailed examination of the contents, a database was developed which consists of information about (1) volume/number/year; (2) study areas; (3) forms of tourism; (4) subject themes; (5) research perspectives; (6) concept and measurement and (7) methodology. A series of trends describing the growth of sustainable tourism research has been identified. The findings present the journal's contribution to theoretical debates, methodological sophistication and practical implications in sustainable tourism development. This study examines the performativity of contemporary knowledge in a tourism specialism – sporting event economic impact research – through a relational bibliometric analysis of articles within tourism journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) from 2000 until 2018. The paper aims to propose a novel methodological approach using social network analysis (SNA) to evaluate and visualize a performativity citation network of the most influential papers in the specialism with a reference to a 'tribes and territories' framework. The findings suggest that performativity – based on funding comments within the acknowledgements and the main text – is an insightful input that has a novel quality in the interpretation of tourism academic citation networks. Therefore, the common interpretation of citation-based knowledge networks on quantitative academic outputs, such as papers citations, has been supplemented with a performativity perspective focused on practical solutions to industry-related problems. Stakeholders in hospitality and tourism industries are involved in many decision-making scenarios. Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods have been widely used in hospitality and tourism industries. Although some articles summarised the applications of MCDM models in hospitality and tourism industries, they ignored the fuzziness of individual cognition in an uncertain environment. In addition, these surveys lacked a comprehensive overview from the perspective of bibliometrics analysis and content analysis regarding the whole hospitality and tourism industries. To analyse the applications of fuzzy MCDM methods in hospitality and tourism industries and further explore future research directions, this article reviews 85 selected papers published from 1997 to 2022 regarding fuzzy MCDM models applied in hospitality and tourism industries. Through analysing the results of bibliometric analysis, methodologies and applications, we found that analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and TOPSIS methods are the most widely used MCDM methods, and tourism evaluation, hotel evaluation and selection, tourism destination evaluation and selection are the most attractive research issues in hospitality and tourism industries. Finally, future research directions are proposed from three aspects. This article is about the politics of landscape ideas, and the relationship between landscape, identity and memory. It explores these themes through the history of the Victoria Falls, and the tourist resort that developed around the waterfall after 1900. Drawing on oral and archival sources, including popular natural history writing and tourist guides, it investigates African and European ideas about the waterfall, and the ways that these interacted and changed in the course of colonial appropriations of the Falls area. The tourist experience of the resort and the landscape ideas promoted through it were linked to Edwardian notions of Britishness and empire, ideas of whiteness and settler identities that transcended new colonial borders, and to the subject identities accommodated or excluded. Cultures of colonial authority did not develop by simply overriding local ideas, they involved fusions, exchanges and selective appropriations of them. The two main African groups I am concerned with here are the Leya, who lived in small groups around the Falls under a number of separate chiefs, and the powerful Lozi rulers, to whom they paid tribute in the nineteenth century. The article highlights colonial authorities' celebration of aspects of the Lozi aristocracy's relationship with the river, and their exclusion of the Leya people who had a longer and closer relationship with the waterfall. It also touches on the politics of recent attempts to reverse this exclusion, and the controversial rewriting of history this has involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism showcases research that addresses an identified gap that is the relative neglect of the sustainability concept in a workforce context. The special issue presents 10 papers, each making a unique and distinct contribution to knowledge. This extended review/editorial presents a critique of current definitions of sustainability in an employment, and specifically in a tourism employment context, acknowledging and critiquing extant literature. The review then moves on to summarising all the submissions to this special issue, uniquely recognising the themes from both submissions as well as accepted papers. These exercises culminate in the presentation of a refreshed conceptualisation of sustainable employment, before we introduce the final selected papers. The submissions are mapped onto a proposed conceptual framework, which recognises the multi-dimensional influences of the evolving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), recent Sustainable Human Resource Management (SHRM) and tourism literature, and the hot-off-the-press contributions to theory of this special issue. We respond to two rejoinders to our review article "Science for Success," which proposed fuller contextualization of epistemological approach, researcher position and interests in conservation research. This way readers—including reviewers and journal editors—can better understand and interpret findings. We suggest this contextualization is particularly important when conservation and development professionals undertake research about programs they are involved in, as this can potentially create a conflict of interest. Both rejoinders follow an extended process of complaint about our article that included academic and legal threats, and ad hominem attacks, with little engagement with the points made about researcher positionality. We consider this to be a form of "discursive violence" deployed to silence unfavorable perspectives, confirming our argument that positionality in conservation (research) begs self-reflection and transparent disclosure. Regenerative tourism is a transformational approach to healing relationships between tourism, places and communities. Several urban rivers are being made swimmable (again) to mitigate against negative climate effects, promote urban health and liveability and contribute to the city's tourism potential. This paper examines the application of a regenerative tourism conceptual framework (RTCF) to the Swimmable Birrarung/Yarra River (SB2030) initiative in Narrm, Melbourne, Australia and the dynamics among the key initiative stakeholders. Swimming is applied to catalyse regenerative transformations of the city's main waterway. Tourism's contributions to regenerating the river and its community are examined. The RTCF is tested for the development and implementation of a transdisciplinary action research project involving the river, civil society, academic, Indigenous, business, and government actors. Analysis of the SB2030 initiative shows that extractive approaches dominate tourism's approach to the river but also that tourism can play a critical role in supporting the regenerative development of the river and its community. Rather than a type of tourism, it positions tourism's core purpose as a contributor to the regeneration of social-ecological systems. Evidently, other sectors must create conditions suitable for tourism to support the multi-systems urban river regeneration impetus. This paper is an introductory paper to the Special Issue marking the 20th Anniversary of the Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. The aim of this paper is threefold: First, it briefly presents and give thanks to the persons involved in establishing and developing the journal to what it is today. Second is a presentation of the journal's current standing. Third, it presents an overview of the ten main areas of research featured in the journal since its start. For each of the 10 areas, expert researchers within each field have been invited to review the SJHT publications related to their topic and propose a future research agenda. They are included as separate short papers in this issue (SJHT, Vol. 21, No. 1). Thus, this anniversary issue looks to the past and forward, aiming to inspire future event, hospitality, and tourism research relevant to the Nordic, as well as the North Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic regions. The Margaret River region (Western Australia) is a popular international tourism destination. Since its emergence in the late 19th century, tourism in the Margaret River region (MRR) has interacted with a number of regional industries including timber, dairy, and wine. These interactions have changed from 'supportive' to 'competing' reflecting various changes in the market and the availability of common local assets such as forest, land, and public funding. While timber and dairy had an important influence on the evolution of tourism in the region, it was the emergence of wine that shifted tourism the most. Using selected concepts of evolutionary economic geography (EEG), mainly path-dependence, path-reformation, interpath relations, and triggering events, this paper demonstrates how tourism has interacted with different other industries and how these interactions have shaped the MRR as a wine-tourist destination. The paper shows how two related triggering events contributed to the emergence of wine-tourism as a new path in the region – a process referred to as 'path-blending'. In this respect, the paper provides empirical evidence that triggering events can result in multiple new paths and can also significantly shape the relations between new and existing regional paths. As such, the paper responds to the call for breaking away with the 'single-path view' in research on industrial evolution, and for more attention to the various relations between tourism and other sectors within a tourist destination. Scholars have been interested in examining what drives pro-environmental behavior. However, only a few scientific studies have been devoted to analyzing and understanding the pro-environmental behavior of those that are on vacation. Therefore, the current paper contributes to the existing literature by employing a text-mining approach to conduct a full-text analysis of 210 articles and (1) describes pro-environmental conceptualization, (2) presents the important topics and studies that have emerged from the literature, and (3) suggests directions for future research. The eight core topics that were uncovered contributed to discussion of the content of publications, related theories, core constructs, methodologies, main authors, and journals. The paper shows that the literature on pro-environmental behavior uses more quantitative than qualitative approaches and uses structural equations or regression analysis to explore the data. With series on conventional television and pay TV platforms now a key element of media consumption, they have gained increasing academic attention in the last decade, both as a main object of study and in combination with other social phenomena. However, the boundaries of this line of research, which draws together researchers from different fields, have become increasingly blurred. This paper undertook a bibliometric investigation to understand how this line of research has come about, what its characteristics are, the main streams within it, and the extent to which the rise in publications reflects a mature and consolidated field of research in its own right. This analysis focused on the development of scientific production on television series indexed by database Scopus between 2010 and 2019 (n = 1,679 documents). More specifically, this study analyzed authorship, journals, national output and international collaboration, co-citation of keywords to ascertain the main intellectual trends in the area and the co-occurrence of references to find out if there is a theoretical body of works that serve as a foundation for this research. The results show symptoms of immaturity, such as a lack of continuity in authority, little concurrence between specialized journals and the most cited authors and works, vagueness in both the keyword clusters and the papers that are often cited together. In addition, a large number of the most cited works come from fields outside Communication that consider television series an accessory aspect of their main theme, such as their impact on the influx of tourists as a result due to the consumption of cultural works. Electric vehicle tourism is increasingly becoming a realistic prospect for drivers. There has, however, been little research focused on EV tourism. This paper discusses the results of a comprehensive narrative literature review. It suggests that the current paucity of literature is, at least in part, a consequence of two questionable assumptions; first, that EVs are inadequate for tourism travel, and second that they are unlikely to result in substantial changes to drive tourism. This paper challenges these assumptions and explores instrumental, infrastructural, symbolic, and experiential aspects of EV tourism. It suggests that a shift to EVs could prompt instrumental changes to the kinds of trips tourists take, their destinations, rhythms, and planning. It discusses infrastructure upgrades, including consideration of complex financial concerns. It explores possible changes in the symbolic associations between cars and leisure travel and other elements of social life. Finally, it discusses embodied and experiential aspects of drive tourism, including their consequences for safety. A shift to EV tourism is very likely, and very unlikely to leave drive tourism unchanged. This paper therefore argues that it is time to move beyond perceptions that EVs are boring and inadequate, and to take seriously the possibilities for EV tourism research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of rurality has been widely debated among scholars, yet rarely questioned in tourism research. We argue that new approaches to rurality in rural tourism research need to be explored if a more inclusive and diverse rurality is to be found. For this purpose, three fundamental dimensions of dominant approaches to tourism rurality, particularly in the Global North, are problematized in the paper: rural as the opposite of, what is not an urban space, rurality as idyllic/romantic landscapes, and rural authenticity as symbolically and existentially perceived by the visitor. The paper then contends that these three dominant taken-for-granted dimensions reinforce a normative conception of rurality which potentially marginalizes, obstructs, and excludes the flourishing of alternative ruralities in rural tourism destinations. A new theoretical approach to rural tourism, which draws on Massey's relational perspective of space and a new-materialist ontology is proposed, where more inclusive and diverse forms of tourism rurality and more open and non-hierarchical rural assemblages can be envisaged as a result. This paper addresses the transformation of the region around the twin-town Bitterfeld-Wolfen in Eastern Germany from a highly polluted industrial hub into a lakeland idyll and destination for recreation and nature-based tourism. From the perspective of local residents of age, the significance of this transformation was fundamentally shaped by German reunification, in particular by the experience of stigmatisation related to high levels of pollution in Bitterfeld-Wolfen in the context of general bias that devalued East German subjectivities in the course of German reunification. As I detail through both historical and ethnographic research, I show how mine restoration and the clean-up of contaminated sites have subsequently acquired meaning beyond ecological recovery and the improvement of public health. Tied up with the uncertainties and ambivalences of the transformation of East Germany and its integration into a West German entity, I demonstrate how the (im)possibility of restoring a destroyed landscape became inseparable from the postulated need of fundamental recovery of an East German region and its inhabitants from, so-perceived, socialist ruination. Consequently, I argue, the clean-up of contaminated sites and the remediation of a large open-cast mine in (former) East Germany produced not only an idyllic post-mining landscape, but a post-socialist one. Furthermore, as an archive of local history, the restored landscape became a way for elderly people to re-appropriate their past through its transformation into a remarkable present. The paper discusses tourism landscapes in a remote region of Finland where tourism, nature conservation and industrial land-use coexist in tension. It illustrates deep problems with the language of sustainability but suggests that applying the dwelling perspective (Ingold) to analysing tourism landscapes is an illuminating route to appreciating the unsustainable features of modern life generally, like technical infrastructures and the unsustainable practices they support. Through an analysis of how modern roads have shaped landscapes and livelihoods, the paper makes a case for the strengths of the dwelling perspective as long as sufficient emphasis is put on the wider economic and political conditions within which local life can be reproduced and (ecological) sustainability negotiated. It shows that nature tourism involves different ways of being unsustainable but that it also contributes, as policy makers over decades have hoped, to sustaining local livelihoods. This paper develops the notion of post-working landscape to describe how labour, largely no longer performed, continues to shape how local communities understand their landscape in two Alpine valleys in Italy's Trentino Province. Following the abandonment of mountain agriculture, the landscape here is undergoing a process of rewilding, as part of which human traces (terrace fields, mountain pastures, etc.) are being erased. Post-working landscapes thus evoke a sense of loss, but also an intimate and embodied tie with the land. I mobilise this framework to discuss why tourism – a crucial economic activity in this part of northern Italy, but strikingly absent from the case study I analyse – is locally perceived in ambiguous terms, and often openly resisted. This paper offers a case study in frontier colonization, and the subsequent transformation of that colonization into heritage, in order to explore the peripheral processes and projects of state making in China. The paper approaches China's frontiers as exceptional spaces that compel the state to perform projects of purification. Such projects aim to order frontier space through bordering and "civilizing" practices, yet tend to also have disordering effects. The paper argues that state territorialization of frontier space is achieved through ongoing efforts to order space through such purifying projects which, in turn, generate new disordered outcomes. This argument is developed through an analysis of historiography and heritage-making of "tunpu" (屯堡) culture in central Guizhou. The historiography of tunpu culture provides insight into the ways genealogical records, state minzu ethnic classifications, and contemporary efforts at heritage promotion can all be understood as purifying projects of bordering that in fact introduce outcomes which require more borders. This conceptual paper argues that there are unrealized benefits from a cross-fertilization between research on sustainable tourism and sustainability transitions studies. With the aim to stimulate such cross-fertilization, the paper identifies three contemporary streams in sustainability transitions studies that are particularly relevant for sustainable tourism: deep transitions, transitions in practice, and the geography of transitions. These three streams present complementary perspectives, which can help reach a more nuanced understanding of transition processes in the tourism sector. The paper concludes that while research on sustainable tourism can benefit from theories, concepts, and frameworks from research on sustainability transitions, research on sustainable tourism can support further conceptual developments in sustainability transitions studies. Second home tourism has emerged as a significant area of research because of the intersection between tourism and migration that has been encouraged by new forms of mobility. The social and economic aspects of second homes have been studied extensively, yet research on the environmental impacts of second home tourism remains limited. The paper aims to review second home research in general, identify environmental policies and the relevance to second home tourism, and discuss the applicable environmental research themes undertaken to date and those that should still be researched. The employment of anthropomorphism in promotion has witnessed a notable surge in recent times, surpassing prevous levels in the hospitality and tourism sectors. This research examines the development of anthropomorphism in hospitality and tourism over the past 13 years between 2010 and 2023, showcasing recent research themes, methods, national, international, interdisciplinary, or multidisciplinary alliances, and prominent anthropomorphism researchers and institutes in the hospitality and tourism field. One hundred and twenty-five research papers were published for hospitality and tourism in anthropomorphism. The research reveals that this topic is exponentially growing. This is the first study to provide a bibliometric analysis followed by content analysis of anthropomorphism research in the hospitality and tourism research niche, with theoretical and practical contributions. The findings of cluster analysis reveal several futuristic themes, such as machine learning, robotics, etc., which marketers can focus on for building resilient strategies in the long run. The paper investigates the relationship between tourism, energy consumption, trade openness, economic growth, and CO2 emissions for 20 economies of the APEC region from 1995 to 2017. This paper employs cross-sectional dependence with heterogeneous panel estimation techniques. The data confirms cross-sectional dependence, and the CIPS panel unit root test shows that the variables are stationary at their first differences. The Westerlund panel cointegration test affirms a long-run relationship among the variables. Tourism and trade openness have significant positive effects on CO2 emissions while economic growth and energy consumption adversely affect CO2 emissions in the long-run. The OECD, UNWTO, and numerous countries national data-gathering organizations report that tourism, as an industry, underperforms in productivity compared to other industries. While not disagreeing with the comparison from having used standard productivity measurement tools, this paper challenges the rhetoric and implication that productivity growth is unlimited, and that the tourism industry has significant productivity gains available to it. Tourism academics are organized like a very small community that interacts within this small group so that its scientific advances are not imported by other disciplines, the so-called tribes defined by Tribe [Tribe, J. The discussion usually ends with the rankings of authors and journals that also contribute to funnelling out knowledge. This research attempts to understand the gaps of tourism research to draw in trends that should be emphasized in and out of tourism community. Based upon a collection of 63,176 papers that is all the papers published in Scopus journals, social network analysis is applied to unveil countries, journals, and authors' expertise as well as convergence points in academia through the content analysis of keywords, scientific areas, affiliated countries and journals. The findings contribute as a guide for scholars and to the discussion of the gaps of tourism whether it be as a trans- or interdisciplinary approach. The full picture that this paper allows to have about tourism research also represents a critical analysis about its evolution since its very beginning emphasizing its weakness and strengths. Climate change has been identified as a major challenge in the achievement of sustainable development especially for developing countries like Kenya. There has been a wide acknowledgement that there is a need for long-term strategies for the industry players to reduce their contribution to climate change in line with other industries. Industries and societal sectors have sought ways of mitigating the causes of climate change. The Second International Conference on Climate Change and Tourism, held in Davos, Switzerland, on 3 October 2007, provided practical guidelines for the industry in response to climate change. This paper seeks to evaluate the adoption of the ‘Davos Declaration’ among selected Mombasa hotels in terms of water, energy and waste management. Results indicate that despite wide knowledge among hoteliers on the impacts of climate change and the role hotels can play in its mitigation, most hoteliers are slow in adopting the mitigation measures. Integrated sustainability indicators for tourism (ISIT) address tourism as an element of both economic and socio-ecological systems and as actively integrated in multi-level policy-making and planning. This paper aims to review studies of ISIT in peer-reviewed journals with a focus on methodological approaches. By specifically examining ISIT, this study embraces the interdisciplinary nature of both sustainability science and tourism studies. The results are based on a systematic literature review and categorization of the studies’ academic disciplines, methods and organization of indicators. The results reveal that despite being a relatively young area of study, research on ISIT has developed simultaneously across multiple academic disciplines, and is expanding. There seems to be greater interest in developing new methodologies than applying existing indicator frameworks. Most papers refer to indicators thematically and thus discuss tourism separately in the contexts of environmental, social or economic impact. However, emerging approaches analyze tourism as a system of interconnected components and an element of multi-level policy-making. These approaches emphasize public participation and a continuous redefinition of sustainability challenges in response to changes in socio-ecological systems. It also analyzes how the main topics and keywords have changed in these areas in order to raise awareness of the topics and keywords that will predominate in the research in these fields over the next years. This paper reviews resident tourism attitude research through the lens of the individual- and community-level perceived impacts of and responses to tourism. It explores how perceived impacts of tourism and responses to tourism development have been conceptualised and measured in the existing resident attitudes models published between 1990 and 2020. Three categories of variables were identified and used: antecedent variables, tourism impact variables, and dependent variables. The latter three categories are used to discuss the research topic from the lenses of improvements in measurement instruments. Finally, the paper suggests rethinking the overall conceptualisation of residents' perceptions of and reactions to tourism – it proposes future research directions to distinguish between individual-level and community-level effects and reactions. The current study identifies the most important corporate governance topics being discussed in the industry and academia. The findings are based on a series of comparative automated content analyses of 742 public tourism and hospitality companies' governance statements published between 2013 and 2022 and on 129 corporate governance-related journal articles in tourism and hospitality. The findings show that industry's top corporate governance themes are executive compensation, board of directors' qualifications, and voting. The paper compares these with academia's top five themes: firm performance, corporate social responsibility, management practices, local development, and growth opportunities. This article introduces the special issue Changing dimensions of lifestyle mobilities in turbulent times: impacts of COVID-19 outbreaks and multiple crises. It aims not just to understand the individual drivers and consequences of mobility but their interactions with local manifestations of spatial (in)justice in various meaningful places. This editorial synthesizes the four studies of population flows in proximate and remote rural areas in Europe, and puts their contributions to the fields of lifestyle migration and mobilities in context. We introduce the lifestyle migration hub meeting that inspired this special issue and a mobility spectrum around which the article revolves. We then indicate common interests of lifestyle migration and rural tourism geographies, focusing on the contributors' use of human geographic perspectives and aided by observations from ongoing ethnographic work about the demographic future of small villages in northern Sweden. A discussion of multiple disruptions, precarity and vulnerability is linked with a review of the papers before elaborating on destinations and communities as meaningful but vulnerable places. The conclusion outlines how concerns with people's and place's vulnerability and precarity in multiple disruptions to mobility flows can be further explored in cordial dialogue between scholars of lifestyle migration/mobility and tourism geography. This paper reviews the literature on distance decay in urban and rural tourism. Through a systematic literature review, this paper aims to understand the current state of knowledge regarding distance decay in tourism including (1) reveal the main topics and domains, (2) variables applied in past studies, while simultaneously distinguishing them in the form of urban and rural tourism as well as (3) identify potential areas and gaps for future studies. The findings indicate a growing interest among tourism researchers to examine distance decay, with studies predominantly focusing more on urban tourism than rural tourism. Additionally, this review recommends future studies to investigate distance decay in crisis and disaster management for future study regardless of urban or rural tourism settings. As cultural carriers of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), practitioners are key stakeholders in its inheritance and tourism use. Master-apprentice transmission is a major mechanism of generational inheritance. This paper examines ICH masters and apprentices at the Arts & Crafts Museum of Hangzhou, China, and analyzes the cultural composition of handicraft ICH and its intergenerational evolutionary mechanisms. Semi-structured interviews with two generations of practitioners and participant observation were undertaken. Research results reveal that intergenerational evolution involves multifaceted stakeholder interactions centred on practitioners with the support of government, management of the museum and participation of visitors. With patterns of family and master-apprentice inheritance, two generations of practitioners facilitate the evolution of handicraft ICH though both co-creations and conflicts. Second, six cultural attributes for handicraft ICH as of material, pattern, shape, technique, image and system are identified to visualise the process of intergenerational evolution. Third, driven by internal and external factors, ICH evolves through tracks of inheritance, selection and variation as presented through the above six cultural attributes. Moreover, the interdependence of cultural elements highlights the heritage framework of handicraft ICH and reflects the fluidity of authenticity. In this introduction to the special issue, The new tourism geopolitics, we call on scholars to bridge tourism geographies and political geography through the framework of tourism geopolitics. The issue offers novel conceptualizations that extend beyond the study of material borders, passports, and nation-state discourses. Rather, the authors of this issue home in on the entanglements between tourism and geopolitics in the form of events, everyday interactions, ideologies, political economies, and celebritized people and places. The introduction outlines several increasingly pressing questions around the geopolitics of tourism, ones that for too long have been marginal in tourism geography and relatively ignored in political geography. We further identify how political maneuvers at international and domestic, state and non-state, and macro and micro levels trigger the proliferation of geopolitical dilemmas for tourism practices, policies, and flows. The eleven papers in this curated collection offer critical points of departure for bringing tourism and political geographies together to reveal discordant relations of power and oppression in tourism. In doing so, the introduction and papers that follow compel us to account for the significance of tourism in the intimate and extraordinary geopolitical structures of power that shape our lives and our world. This paper aims to help practitioners and researchers understand the impact of COVID-19 on the service business industry through bibliometric analysis. For this purpose, our study collects 671 publications from Web of Science and Scopus. The bibliometric choices in this paper rely on two techniques: performance analysis and science mapping. The performance analysis is organized by the contribution analysis of research constituents. The science mapping uncovers the cooperative network between research constituents, as well as the co-occurrence analysis of keywords. This paper further explores the research topic with content analysis to summarize some findings and discussions. We find that most service business industries have been negatively affected by COVID-19, especially the aviation and tourism industry. Information technology services are a response driver to the negative pandemic impact. Many tourist cities rely on walking as form of slow travel to take in the destination. Venice, the case study for this paper, is a distinct 'walking city', scripted into its cultural landscape along with its visitor crowds. As in other historical cities, however, crowding compromises residents' walking mobility. This particularly affects groups that rely on proximate mobility such as older residents. This paper delves into the effects of tourism on everyday mobilities and realities of coping with change in the tourist city. It thus uncovers repercussions on 'those remaining' and highlights how the privilege of slowness may become a condition of disadvantage. It engages with long-term biographies, walking experiences, and the ageing process itself during an empirical study consisting of walking interviews. The findings show how tourist mobilities collide with access to spaces of social activity, essential services, and neighbourhood life. More importantly, they bring to surface how residents negotiate these hindrances and seek opportunities for mobility and wellbeing, despite older age-related challenges arising from the exclusive uptake of slow mobilities. Eventually, this paper forms a critique that discloses the collateral nature of tourism impacts on ageing in place, stuck between global mobility flows and local tourism management choices. This paper investigates employer attributes and perceptions of industry reputation and industry attractiveness, and their impact on employees' intention to stay in tourism and hospitality. Results show that desired reputation, training, and development value, and prosocial value significantly influence perceptions of industry reputation. Desired diversity and prosocial value have a positive relation to industry attractiveness, while training and development value is negatively related. Perceptions of the industry attractiveness are a major contributor to the intention to remain within the sector. This study seeks to uncover the complex causality between the ecosystem of business environment and tourism by identifying the necessary and sufficient conditions according to the theories of configuration, coupling, and ecology. The methodology draws on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, necessary condition analysis, and data from 274 Chinese cities. The results demonstrate four distinct ecologies of business environment that promote high-level tourism: government-led, government-led human resource-driven, social service-supported resource- and infrastructure-driven, and policy-supported resource- and infrastructure-driven. The study further analyzes the coupling and ecological mechanisms displayed by these ecosystems and the associated risks. Finally, the paper discusses the theoretical and practical implications of the key findings. This paper reveals the various channels and dynamics by which the business environment influences tourism, extends the utilization of configurational theory, coupling theory, and ecological theory to handle tourism's intricacy, and provides theoretical and methodological precedents for comparable future investigations. Community participation in tourism development has gained significant attention in recent years. While ample research has investigated how the community participated in developing tourism destinations and their industries, little is known about what factors, motivations and contributions of the community participating in the development of marine ecotourism. To fill the void, the present study conducts a qualitative systematic review of how community participation contributes to the development of marine ecotourism. The papers were included in the SCOPUS and WOS databases published between 2011 and 2021. In this study, the papers were selected using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. The keywords include “community participation”, “marine ecotourism” and “qualitative”. From 244, 12 articles matched the objective of the study and the keywords. Using thematic analysis, this systematic review discovers the factors, types, and outcomes of community participation in developing marine ecotourism. Additionally, the synthesis has revealed three challenges of community participation in marine ecotourism such as lack of training, local government support, and sociocultural awareness. The present study develops a holistic analysis framework to unravel the complexity of the tourism policy process, with a special focus on the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector in Singapore. A qualitative approach combining two research methods was adopted: qualitative content analysis and documentary analysis. This is a relatively novel perspective in tourism studies. The vision of the tourism policy process offered by the research, through the integration of multiple levels of analysis (micro and macro) and its historical contextualisation, led to a better understanding of the evolution of Singapore as a MICE destination. The paper identifies a series of patterns of action over the last 50 years in the unique and successful MICE tourism development model of this city–state. These have included interventionism, public-private collaboration, long-term planning, and innovation. By using the Singaporean MICE sector as a case study, the paper also provides valuable insights into the dynamics of the tourism policy process. The findings indicate that public policy aimed at the development of a specific tourism segment, namely MICE, should not be analysed in isolation from other policy areas. Russia's full-scale war on Ukraine in early 2022 has brought geopolitics, particularly classical geopolitics, back into the political and economic discussions and decision-making. Discursive, as well as real-world change, has been rapid, as the turn of the 21st century was the time of globalisation and neoliberal ideology – the free movement of people, products, and services. However, in this paper, we argue that classical geopolitics has defined the development of Northern industries even before the war began in 2022. Our interview data (n = 60) collected in the advent of the Russian invasion of Ukraine reveal that the themes of state power; 'hard' security meaning military armament; the economy as a field of national interests; and spill-over effects of geopolitical tensions between superpowers have framed economic fortunes in the European Arctic. Although tourism mobility spillover continues to be a key indicator for tourism management, more innovative research must be conducted at the micro level and high sampling frequency. Against the backdrop of an increasing number of global cities, in this paper, we evaluate the daily tourism mobility spillover inside a worldwide city of China: Shanghai. Based on the Granger causal network model and an original mobile positioning dataset, we analyse the causal relationship between local tourism flows and the spillover effects of tourism mobility within Shanghai. By categorising tourists into 'local tourists from Shanghai' and 'tourists from out of Shanghai', we reveal a significant causal relationship between Shanghai districts and flows generated by 'tourists from out of Shanghai'. The analysis of the causal network structure also reveals key districts and points of interest that significantly contribute to congestion in tourism mobility and Shanghai's dynamics.
