A plane-symmetric optical system with a two-dimensional field light source, such as a soft X-ray and vacuum ultraviolet optical system, is widely used for synchrotron radiation source devices, microscopes and so on. Therefore, this paper studied third-order intrinsic aberration modification with second-order accuracy transfer of pupil coordinates and extrinsic aberration of these kinds of optical systems. First, we discuss the extrinsic aberration calculation method and derive the corresponding aberration expressions; in addition, we apply optical geometric relations and the polynomial fitting method to obtain a second-order accuracy transfer relationship expression of the pupil coordinates between adjacent optical surfaces and derived the modification calculation expressions of the intrinsic aberration caused by the above factor. Finally, the third-order intrinsic aberration modification with second-order accuracy transfer of pupil coordinates and extrinsic aberration expressions derived in this paper are applied to calculate ray spot diagrams of two soft X-ray and vacuum ultraviolet optical systems with meridional and sagittal field angle light sources, and these results are compared with those obtained from the ray-tracing software Shadow; this showed that the calculation accuracy of the aberration expressions is sufficient. In this paper, we report on a systematic study of a soft X-ray Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector built with aluminium-clad kapton GEM foils. The primary objective of this research is to comprehend the performance of this type of detector when irradiated with soft energy photons. The results are analysed and discussed with a particular focus on the long-term detector stability, as well as its gas gain and energy resolution uniformity across the detector area. Presented results lead us to the conclusion that the aluminium based GEM detector is a promising device to suppress the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) background, simultaneously providing very good stability during long-term measurement campaigns. The paper presents developments and significant improvements of the soft X-ray measurement system installed at the WEST tokamak. In the introduction, a brief discussion is carried out in the scope of energy shortage, fusion energy as a remedy, and the necessity of impurities monitoring in the scope of stable and long plasma discharge. This requires high-speed and accurate measurement systems due to the intense data streams that need to be processed online. For that reason, the SXR GEM FPGA-based system was designed by the Institute of Electronic Systems of the Warsaw University of Technology, the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion from Warsaw, and installed at the WEST tokamak in collaboration with the Institute for Magnetic Fusion Research, Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique. It is the second-generation system, whereas the first was installed at JET tokamak. The article describes the architecture of the designed electronic part of the system. The paper presents an entirely new approach for the data concentration module implemented in FPGA. The main premise is to select only active data and send them chronologically to the embedded computer with high throughput. It is the essential component for long-term plasma operations, about 1 min, now carried out at WEST tokamak during the C3 campaign. The paper describes the laboratory tests under the exploitation of various radiation sources and the implementation of the solution and measurements during tokamak plasmas. Previous and current data acquisition methods are compared. The results show that implementing a new local trigger has significantly improved the system performance compared to the global trigger-based acquisition. The results are approximately 17 times better in the scope of performance and more than 20 times better in terms of data compression. The launch of the IXPE telescope in late 2021 finally made polarization measurements in the 2– 8 keV band a reality, more than 40 years after the pioneering observations of the OSO-8 satellite. In the first two years of operations, IXPE targeted more than 60 sources, including four magnetars, neutron stars with magnetic fields in the petaGauss range. In this paper we summarize the IXPE main findings and discuss their implications for the physics of ultra-magnetized neutron stars. Polarimetric observations confirmed theoretical predictions, according to which X-ray radiation from magnetar sources is highly polarized, up to ≈ 80 % , the highest value detected so far. This provides an independent confirmation that magnetars are indeed endowed with a super-strong magnetic field and that the twisted magnetosphere scenario is the most likely explanation for their soft X-ray emission. Polarization measurements allowed us to probe the physical conditions of the star's outermost layers, showing that the cooler surface regions are in a condensed state, with no atmosphere on top. Although no smoking-gun of vacuum QED effects was found, the phase-dependent behavior of the polarization angle strongly hints that vacuum birefringence is indeed at work in magnetar magnetospheres. Hybrid pixel detectors have become indispensable at synchrotron and X-ray free-electron laser facilities thanks to their large dynamic range, high frame rate, low noise, and large area. However, at energies below 3 keV, the detector performance is often limited because of the poor quantum efficiency of the sensor and the difficulty in achieving single-photon resolution due to the low signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, we address the quantum efficiency of silicon sensors by refining the design of the entrance window, mainly by passivating the silicon surface and optimizing the dopant profile of the n+ region. We present the measurement of the quantum efficiency in the soft X-ray energy range for silicon sensors with several process variations in the fabrication of planar sensors with thin entrance windows. The quantum efficiency for 250 eV photons is increased from almost 0.5% for a standard sensor to up to 62% as a consequence of these developments, comparable to the quantum efficiency of backside-illuminated scientific CMOS sensors. The paper studies the soft X-ray data of solar flares and found that the distribution functions of flare fluence are successfully modeled by tapered power law or gamma function distributions whose power exponent is slightly smaller than 2, indicating that the total energy of the flare populations is mostly due to a small number of large flares. The largest possible solar flares in 1000 years are predicted to be around X70 (a peak flux of 70 × 10−4 W m−2) in terms of the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) flare class. The paper also studies superflares (more energetic than solar flares) from solar-type stars and found that their power exponent in the fitting of the gamma function distribution is around 1.05, which is much flatter than solar flares. D flip-flop (DFF) is the basic unit of sequential logic in digital circuits. However, because of an internal cross-coupled inverter pair, it can easily appear as a single event upset (SEU) when hit by high-energy particles, resulting in the error in the value stored in the flip-flop. On this basis, a new structure D flip-flop is proposed in this paper. This flip-flop uses an asymmetric scheme in which the master–slave latch adopts different hardening structures. By sacrificing circuit speed in exchange for stronger SEU fortification capability, the SEU threshold of this structure is improved by 10 times compared to traditional D flip-flops. It has also been compared with Dual Interlocked Storage Elements (DICEs), and it saves the area cost of six transistors compared to the DICE structure. Under the same operating conditions, the average power consumption and peak power consumption are, respectively, 9.8% and 18.8% lower than those of the DICE circuit, making it suitable for soft radiation environments where high circuit speed is not a critical requirement. The interaction of two subsequent ultra-short sub-milli-Joule laser pulses with a thin water flow results in an emission of a strong single-cycle THz pulse associated with enhanced soft X-ray emission. In this paper, a chain of processes produced in this interaction is analyzed and compared with other THz generation studies. It is demonstrated that the enhanced THz and X-ray emissions are produced by an energetic electron beam accelerated in the interaction of a main laser pulse with liquid water ejected from the surface by the pre-pulse. This scheme thus provides an efficient laser energy conversion in a THz pulse, avoiding laser self-focusing and filamentation in air. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pulse duration in short-pulse schemes for Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission Free Electron Lasers (SASE FELs) is limited by the FEL coherence time. A recently proposed concept allows to overcome the coherence time barrier and to obtain much shorter pulses. When the lasing part of an electron bunch is much shorter than the coherence time, one can suppress the radiation in the long main undulator while preserving microbunching within that short lasing slice. Then, a short radiation pulse is produced in a relatively short radiator. A possible suppression method, an excessive reverse undulator taper, is discussed and illustrated numerically in this paper. We also performed the first experimental tests of this method at the soft X-ray FEL user facility FLASH. The measured pulse duration approaches 1 fs (FWHM) at the wavelength of 5 nm. With the advent of soft X-ray imaging enabling global magnetopause detection, it is critical to use reconstruction techniques to derive the 3-dimensional magnetopause location from 2-dimensional X-ray images. One of the important assumptions adopted by most techniques is that the direction with maximum soft X-ray emission is the tangent direction of the magnetopause, which has not been validated in observation so far. This paper analyzes a magnetospheric solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) soft X-ray event detected by XMM–Newton during relatively stable solar wind and geomagnetic conditions. The tangent direction of the magnetopause is determined by an empirical magnetopause model. Observation results show that the maximum SWCX soft X-ray intensity gradient tends to be the tangent of the magnetopause's inner boundary, while the maximum SWCX soft X-ray intensity tends to be the tangent of the magnetopause's outer boundary. Therefore, it is credible to use the assumption that the tangent direction of the magnetopause is the maximum SWCX soft X-ray intensity or its gradient when reconstructing the 3-dimensional magnetopause location. In addition, since these two maxima tend to be the inner and outer boundaries of the magnetopause, the thickness of magnetopause can also be revealed by soft X-ray imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synchrotron-based soft X-ray tomography (SXT), providing three-dimensional morphology and quantitative distribution of linear absorption coefficient (LAC) of the imaged objects, is widely used in many fields to obtain ultra-structure images, especially in cellular imaging. Off-line fluorescence microscopies (FMs) are combined to identify the type of organelles and status of cells. However, deformation and displacement usually occur during the transfer and loading process, which decreases the precision of two-modal images' registration. In this paper, we report on an on-line FM, at the SXT station (BL07W) of the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), which avoids deformation and displacement. Therefore, researchers can easily find the sample and take the useful data without tedious post-processing. Combining SXT with on-line FM, we achieved the identification and high-resolution imaging of an apoptotic cell. The experiments revealed that the LAC of the nucleus of the apoptotic cell was larger than that of a normal cell, which could be explained by nucleus pyknosis of the apoptotic cell. We present an analysis of the performance of a broadband secondary radiation source based on a high-gradient laser-plasma wakefield electron accelerator. In more detail, we report studies of compact and ultra-short X-ray generation via betatron oscillations in plasma channels. For the specific working point examined in this paper, determined by the needs of other experiments ongoing at the facility, at ∼0.02 Hz operation rate, we have found ≲ 10 6 photons emitted per shot (with a fluctuation of 50 % ) in the soft X-rays, corresponding to a critical energy of ∼0.8 keV (with a fluctuation of 40%). In this paper, by means of high-resolution photoemission, soft X-ray absorption and atomic force microscopy, we investigate, for the first time, the mechanisms of damaging, induced by neutron source, and recovering (after annealing) of p-i-n detector devices based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). This investigation will be performed by mean of high-resolution photoemission, soft X-Ray absorption and atomic force microscopy. Due to dangling bonds, the amorphous silicon is a highly defective material. However, by hydrogenation it is possible to reduce the density of the defect by several orders of magnitude, using hydrogenation and this will allow its usage in radiation detector devices. The investigation of the damage induced by exposure to high energy irradiation and its microscopic origin is fundamental since the amount of defects determine the electronic properties of the a-Si:H. The comparison of the spectroscopic results on bare and irradiated samples shows an increased degree of disorder and a strong reduction of the Si-H bonds after irradiation. After annealing we observe a partial recovering of the Si-H bonds, reducing the disorder in the Si (possibly due to the lowering of the radiation-induced dangling bonds). The Shanghai soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility (SXFEL), which is the first X-ray FEL facility in China, is being constructed in two phases: the test facility (SXFEL-TF) and the user facility (SXFEL-UF). The test facility was initiated in 2006 and funded in 2014. The commissioning of the test facility was finished in 2020. The user facility was funded in 2016 to upgrade the accelerator energy and build two undulator lines with five experimental end-stations. The output photon energy of the user facility will cover the whole water window range. This paper presents an overview of the SXFEL facility, including considerations of the upgrade, layout and design, construction status, commissioning progress and future plans. Featured Application: Cryo-nano tomography of biological samples with no landmarks in view. The high resolution of synchrotron cryo-nano tomography can be easily undermined by setup instabilities and sample stage deficiencies such as runout or backlash. At the cost of limiting the sample visibility, especially in the case of bio-specimens, high contrast nano-beads are often added to the solution to provide a set of landmarks for a manual alignment. However, the spatial distribution of these reference points within the sample is difficult to control, resulting in many datasets without a sufficient amount of such critical features for tracking. Fast automatic methods based on tomography consistency are thus desirable, especially for biological samples, where regular, high contrast features can be scarce. Current off-the-shelf implementations of such classes of algorithms are slow if used on a real-world high-resolution dataset. In this paper, we present a fast implementation of a consistency-based alignment algorithm especially tailored to a multi-GPU system. Our implementation is released as open-source. We present a design of a compact transmission water-window microscope based on the Z-pinching capillary discharge nitrogen plasma source. The microscope operates at wavelength of 2.88 nm (430 eV), and with its table-top dimensions provides an alternative to large-scale soft X-ray (SXR) microscope systems based on synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. The emitted soft X-ray radiation is filtered by a titanium foil and focused by an ellipsoidal condenser mirror into the sample plane. A Fresnel zone plate was used to create a transmission image of the sample onto a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. To assess the resolution of the microscope, we imaged a standard sample-copper mesh. The spatial resolution of the microscope is 75 nm at half-pitch, calculated via a 10–90% intensity knife-edge test. The applicability of the microscope is demonstrated by the imaging of green algae-Desmodesmus communis. This study has systematically investigated the atomic number (Z) dependence of spectra from gallium-like (Ga-like) ions of heavy elements. We have mainly analyzed the experimental spectra recorded in high-temperature plasmas produced in the Large Helical Device (LHD) for various elements with atomic numbers from 57 onward. The measured wavelengths are compared with theoretical values calculated with a multi-configuration Dirac Fock code. As a result, we have successfully obtained Z-dependent wavelengths of several prominent transitions of Ga-like ions, including a magnetic dipole (M1) transition. Many of them have been experimentally identified for the first time in this study. The present results manifest the significant effects of configuration interaction and spin–orbit interaction for highly charged heavy ions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray pump/X-ray probe applications are made possible at X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facilities by generating two X-ray pulses with different wavelengths and controllable temporal delay. In order to enable this capability at the European XFEL, an upgrade project to equip the soft X-ray SASE3 beamline with a magnetic chicane is underway. In the present paper we describe the status of the project, its scientific focus and expected performance, including start-to-end simulations of the photon beam transport up to the sample, as well as recent experimental results demonstrating two-color lasing at photon energies of 805 eV + 835 eV and 910 eV + 950 eV. Additionally, we discuss methods to analyze the spectral properties and the intensity of the generated radiation to provide on-line diagnostics for future user experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Post-radiation fractures are a significant complication of cancer treatment, often being challenging to manage and impacting patients' quality of life. This study systematically reviews the literature on fractures in irradiated bones, focusing on risk factors, treatment modalities, and prevention strategies. Factors increasing fracture risk include exposure to high doses of radiation of at least 50 Gy, female gender, menopausal age, and periosteal stripping. Additionally further risk factors are the size of the original tumor and osteoporosis. Methods: A search of PubMed yielded 541 articles, with 4 were ultimately included in the review. These retrospective studies focused on patients undergoing Combined Limb-Sparing Surgery and Radiation Therapy for soft tissue sarcoma. Results: Results show post-radiation fractures affect approximately 4% of patients, with the femur being the most frequently affected site. Intramedullary nailing emerges as the gold standard treatment, with prosthetic replacement or megaprostheses used in the metaepiphyseal region and as salvage procedures. Non-union and infection remain formidable complications. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of prophylactic nailing in fracture prevention and the efficacy of free vascularized fibular flaps to achieve bone union during revision surgeries. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a technique that relies on detecting forces at the nanonewton scale. It involves using a cantilever with a tiny tip at one end. This tip interacts with the short- and long-range forces of material surfaces. These cantilevers are typically manufactured with Si or Si3N4 and synthesized using a lithography technique, which implies a high cost. On the other hand, through simple chemical methods, it is possible to synthesize a magneto-dielectric composite made up of artificial SiO2 opals infiltrated with superparamagnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4. From these materials, it is possible to obtain tipless cantilevers that can be used in AFM analysis. Tipless cantilevers are an alternative tool in nanoscale exploration, offering a versatile approach to surface analysis. Unlike traditional AFM probes, tipless versions eliminate the challenges associated with tip wear, ensuring prolonged stability during measurements. This makes tipless AFM particularly valuable for imaging delicate or soft samples, as it prevents sample damage and provides precise measurements of topography and mechanical and electromechanical properties. This study presents the results of the characterization of known surfaces using magneto-dielectric cantilevers and commercial cantilevers based on Si. The dysfunction of α and β cells in pancreatic islets can lead to diabetes. Many questions remain on the subcellular organization of islet cells during the progression of disease. Existing three-dimensional cellular mapping approaches face challenges such as time-intensive sample sectioning and subjective cellular identification. To address these challenges, we have developed a subcellular feature-based classification approach, which allows us to identify α and β cells and quantify their subcellular structural characteristics using soft X-ray tomography (SXT). We observed significant differences in whole-cell morphological and organelle statistics between the two cell types. Additionally, we characterize subtle biophysical differences between individual insulin and glucagon vesicles by analyzing vesicle size and molecular density distributions, which were not previously possible using other methods. These sub-vesicular parameters enable us to predict cell types systematically using supervised machine learning. We also visualize distinct vesicle and cell subtypes using Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) embeddings, which provides us with an innovative approach to explore structural heterogeneity in islet cells. The accurate assessment of peanut seed plumpness is crucial for optimizing peanut production and quality. The current method is mainly manual and visual inspection, which is very time-consuming and causes seed deterioration. A novel imaging technique is used to enhance the detection of peanut seed fullness using a non-destructive soft X-ray, which is suitable for the analysis of the surface or a thin layer of a material. The overall grayscale of the peanut is similar to the background, and the edge of the peanut seed is blurred. The inaccuracy of peanut overall and peanut seed segmentation leads to low accuracy of seed plumpness detection. To improve accuracy in detecting the fullness of peanut seeds, a seed plumpness detection method based on level set and multi-threshold segmentation was proposed for peanut images. Firstly, the level set algorithm is used to extract the overall contour of peanuts. Secondly, the obtained binary image is processed by morphology to obtain the peanut pods (the peanut overall). Then, the multi-threshold OTSU algorithm is used for threshold segmentation. The threshold is selected to extract the peanut seed part. Finally, morphology is used to complete the cavity to achieve the segmentation of the peanut seed. Compared with optimization algorithms, in the segmentation of the peanut pods, average random index (RI), global consistency error (GCE) and variation of information (VI) were increased by 10.12% and decreased by 0.53% and 24.11%, respectively. Compared with existing algorithms, in the segmentation of the peanut seed, the average RI, VI and GCE were increased by 18.32% and decreased by 9.14% and 6.11%, respectively. The proposed method is stable, accurate and can meet the requirements of peanut image plumpness detection. Imaging has been an important strategy for exploring space weather. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) is a joint Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and European Space Agency (ESA) mission, aiming at studying the interaction between Earth's magnetosphere and solar wind near the subsolar point via soft X-ray imaging. As the boundary of Earth's magnetosphere, magnetopause is a significant detection target to mirror solar wind's change for the SMILE mission. In preparation for inverting three-dimensional magnetopause, we proposed an OESA-UNet model to detect the magnetopause position. The model obtains magnetopause with a U-shaped structure, in an end-to-end manner. Inspired by attention mechanisms, these blocks are integrated into ours. OESA-UNet captures low and high-level feature maps by adjusting the receptive field for precise localization. Adaptively pre-processing the image provides a prior for the network. Availability metrics are designed to determine whether it can serve three-dimensional inversion. Lastly, we provided ablation and comparison experiments by qualitative and quantitative analysis. Our recall, precision, and f1 score are 93.8%, 92.1%, and 92.9%, respectively, with an average angle deviation of 0.005 under the availability metrics. Understanding the lateral variations in the elemental and chemical state of constituents induced by electrochemical reactions at nanoscales is crucial for the advancement of electrochemical materials science. This requires in situ studies to provide observables that contribute to both modeling beyond the phenomenological level and exactly transducing the functionally relevant quantities. A range of X-ray coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) approaches have recently been proposed for imaging beyond the diffraction limit with potentially dramatic improvements in time resolution with chemical sensitivity. In this paper, we report a selection of ptychography results obtained in situ during the electrodeposition of a metal-polymer nanocomposite. Our selection includes dynamic imaging during electrochemically driven growth complemented with absorption and phase spectroscopy with high lateral resolution. We demonstrate the onset of morphological instability feature formation and correlate the chemical state of Mn with the local growth rate controlled by the current density distribution resulting from morphological evolution. A multichannel soft X-ray (SXR) array has been developed to measure the electron temperature in the Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). To estimate electron temperature using the two-filter method applied to SXR intensity, we designed a pinhole camera that has two photodiode arrays with different metallic filters. We also adopted a filter wheel and tested various filter parameters to find the optimal filter set. Through tests, the combination of aluminum and beryllium was found to be the most suitable for the current experimental conditions in VEST. The filtered SXR signals were acquired with a low-noise preamplifier, exhibiting sufficient signal-to-noise ratios for electron temperature estimation based on the intensity ratio of two signals obtained with different filters. The estimated electron temperature from the developed two-filter SXR array showed reasonably matched levels and consistent trends with Thomson scattering measurements. The interaction between metal particles and the oxide support, the so-called metal–support interaction, plays a critical role in the performance of heterogenous catalysts. Probing the dynamic evolution of these interactions under reactive gas atmospheres is crucial to comprehending the structure–performance relationship and eventually designing new catalysts with enhanced properties. Cobalt supported on TiO2 (Co/TiO2) is an industrially relevant catalyst applied in Fischer−Tropsch synthesis. Although it is widely acknowledged that Co/TiO2 is restructured during the reaction process, little is known about the impact of the specific gas phase environment at the material's surface. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopies are used to investigate in situ Co particles supported on pure and NaBH4-modified TiO2 under H2, O2, and CO2:H2 gas atmospheres. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission methods, which allows for simultaneous probing of the chemical composition of surface and subsurface layers, is one of the study's unique features. It is shown that under H2, cobalt particles are encapsulated below a stoichiometric TiO2 layer. This arrangement is preserved under CO2 hydrogenation conditions (i.e., CO2:H2), but changes rapidly upon exposure to O2. The pretreatment of the TiO2 support with NaBH4 affects the surface mobility and prevents TiO2 spillover onto Co particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of dense and hot plasmas can be used to build up powerful and brilliant radiation sources in the soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet spectral range. Such sources are used for nanoscale imaging and structuring applications, such as EUV lithography in the semiconductor industry. An understanding of light-generating atomic processes and radiation transport within the plasma is mandatory for optimization. The basic principles and technical concepts using either a pulsed laser or a gas discharge for plasma generation are presented, and critical aspects in the ionization dynamics are outlined within the framework of a simplified atomic physics model. With the development of large-scale CMOS-integrated circuit manufacturing technology, microprocessor chips are more vulnerable to soft errors and radiation interference, resulting in reduced reliability. Core reliability is an important element of the microprocessor's ability to resist soft errors. This paper proposes DuckCore, a fault-tolerant processor core architecture based on the free and open instruction set architecture (ISA) RISC-V. This architecture uses improved SECDED (single error correction, double error detection) code between pipelines, detects processor operating errors in real-time through the Supervision unit, and takes instruction rollbacks for different error types, which not only saves resources but also improves the reliability of the processor core. In the implementation process, all error injection tests are passed to verify the completeness of the function. In order to better verify the performance of the processor under different error intensity injections, the software is used to inject errors, the running program is run on the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), and the impact of the actual radiation environment on the architecture is evaluated through the results. The architecture is applied to three–five-stage open-source processor cores and the results show that this method consumes fewer resources and its discrete design makes it more portable. In a variety of industries, Additive Manufacturing has revolutionized the whole design–fabrication cycle. Traditional 3D printing is typically employed to produce static components, which are not able to fulfill dynamic structural requirements and are inappropriate for applications such as soft grippers, self-assembly systems, and smart actuators. To address this limitation, an innovative technology has emerged, known as "4D printing". It processes smart materials by using 3D printing for fabricating smart structures that can be reconfigured by applying different inputs, such as heat, humidity, magnetism, electricity, light, etc. At present, 4D printing is still a growing technology, and it presents numerous challenges regarding materials, design, simulation, fabrication processes, applied strategies, and reversibility. Extracting the peak value of the X-ray signal in the original magnetopause detection method of soft X-ray imaging (SXI) for the SMILE satellite is problematic because of the unclear interface of the magnetosphere system under low solar wind density and the short integration time. Herein, we propose a segmentation algorithm for soft X-ray images based on depth learning, we construct an SXI simulation dataset, and we segment the magnetospheric system by learning the spatial structure characteristics of the magnetospheric system image. Then, we extract the maximum position of the X-ray signal and calculate the spatial configuration of the magnetopause using the tangent fitting approach. Under a uniform universe condition, we achieved a pixel accuracy of the maximum position of the photon number detected by the network as high as 90.94% and contained the position error of the sunset point of the 3D magnetopause below 0.2 RE. This result demonstrates that the proposed method can detect the peak photon number of magnetospheric soft X-ray images with low solar wind density. As such, its use improves the segmentation accuracy of magnetospheric soft X-ray images and reduces the imaging time requirements of the input image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon/Phenolic (C/P), a typical anisotropic material, is an important component of aerospace and often used to protect the thermodynamic effects of strong X-ray radiation. In this paper, we establish the anisotropic elastic-plastic constitutive model, which is embedded in the in-house code "RAMA" to simulate a two-dimensional thermal shock wave induced by X-ray. Then, we compare the numerical simulation results with the thermal shock wave stress generated by the same strong current electron beam via experiment to verify the correctness of the numerical simulation. Subsequently, we discuss and analyze the rules of thermal shock wave propagation in C/P material by further numerical simulation. The results reveal that the thermal shock wave represents different shapes and mechanisms by the radiation of 1 keV and 3 keV X-rays. The vaporization recoil phenomenon appears as a compression wave under 1 keV X-ray irradiation, and X-ray penetration is caused by thermal deformation under 3 keV X-ray irradiation. The thermal shock wave propagation exhibits two-dimensional characteristics, the energy deposition of 1 keV and 3 keV both decays exponentially, the energy deposition of 1 keV-peak soft X-ray is high, and the deposition depth is shallow, while the energy deposition of 3 keV-peak hard X-ray is low, and the deposition depth is deep. RAMA can successfully realize two-dimensional orthotropic elastoplastic constitutive relation, the corresponding program was designed and checked, and the calculation results for inspection are consistent with the theory. THESEUS is an ESA space based project, which aims to explore the early universe by unveiling a complete census of Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) population in the first billion years. This goal is expected to be realized by the combined observations of its three instruments on board: the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), the X and Gamma Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS), and the InfraRed Telescope (IRT). This last one will identify, localise, and study the afterglow of the GRBs detected by SXI and XGIS, and about 40% of its time will be devoted to an all-sky photometric survey, which will certainly detect a relevant number of extragalactic sources, including Quasars. In this paper, we focus on the capability of IRT-THESEUS Telescope to observe Quasars and, in particular, Quasars lensed by foreground galaxies. In our analysis we consider the recent results for the Quasar Luminosity Function (QLF) in the infrared band based on the Spitzer Space Telescope imaging survey. In order to estimate the number of lensed Quasars, we develop Monte Carlo simulations using the mass-luminosity distribution function of galaxies and the galaxy and Quasar redshift distributions. We predict about 2.14 × 105 Quasars to be observed during IRT-Theseus sky survey, and approximately 140 of them lensed by foreground galaxies. Detailed studies of these events would provide a powerful probe of the physical properties of Quasars and the mass distribution models of the galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An online automatic feedback system has been successfully installed and commissioned at the BL08U1A Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy Beamline of Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, which can monitor the incident X-ray beam in real time by measuring the blade-edge signals of the exit slit and automatically adjust the elliptical cylindrical mirror parameters to achieve beam calibration and maintain the optimal X-ray flux of the sample. This work provides a comprehensive description of the hardware composition, system implementation, feedback logic, function and software design, system optimization and commission, as well as the online experimental results supported by the system. The experimental results demonstrated that the online automatic feedback system is capable of effectively maintaining the optimal X-ray beam flux for X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments. Its success can provide valuable technique assistance for the design, construction and optimization of similar systems at various beamlines in synchrotron sources in the future. We have studied the quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) of the M2.3 flare that occurred in the active region NOAA 12172 on 23 September 2014. Through the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method, we decompose the flare light curves into fast- and slowly-varying components, and the cut-off threshold is 100 s. We find that the QPPs have a period of 40 s at soft X-ray (SXR), hard X-ray (HXR), radio and ultraviolet (UV). Based on the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), we find that the QPPs take place at the same time interval as the flare ribbon separation, and that the QPPs seem to originate from the flare ribbons. The electrochemical behaviour of Al, used as a current collector in supercapacitors and in Li-ion and Na-ion electrochemical power sources, was investigated for the first time using the in situ soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) method, collecting the information directly at the electrolyte-covered Al current collector polarised electrochemically at high anodic potentials. Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and synchrotron in situ soft XPS methods were applied to collect physical and electrochemical information characterising the electrochemically polarised Al-current-collector RTIL interface soaked into the butyltrimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (N4111(TFSI)) room-temperature ionic liquid. The obtained data show the start of intensive oxidation processes, including aluminium oxidation and the formation of an insoluble Al(TFSI)3 surface layer in N4111(TFSI) at E ≥ 3.0 V (vs. Ag-QRE). Very intensive electro-oxidation of TFSI− anions at E ≥ 6.5 V (vs. Ag-QRE) has been observed. CV data indicate that the electrochemical oxidation of once-activated Al is possible in N4111(TFSI) at 1.1 V < E < 1.6 V (vs. Ag-QRE). Therefore, the oxidation of Al starts at E ≥ 2.05 V (vs. Ag-QRE) if the Al surface is modified with electro-oxidation products of TFSI− anions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For more than 15 years, Imagine Optic have developed Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) and X-ray Hartmann wavefront sensors for metrology and imaging applications. These sensors are compatible with a wide range of X-ray sources: from synchrotrons, Free Electron Lasers, laser-driven betatron and plasma-based EUV lasers to High Harmonic Generation. In this paper, we first describe the principle of a Hartmann sensor and give some key parameters to design a high-performance sensor. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) provides the imaging of biological specimens allowing the parallel collection of localized spectroscopic information by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and/or X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES). The complex metabolic mechanisms which can take place in biological systems can be explored by these techniques by tracing even small quantities of the chemical elements involved in the metabolic pathways. We report on observations of single spike spectra (3–13% of events) upon employing a previously proposed method for single spike generation via harmonic conversion. The method was tested at the soft X-ray SASE3 undulator of the European XFEL. The first part of the undulator allows one to amplify bunching at the fundamental as well as the higher harmonics. The downstream undulator is tuned to a harmonic, the fourth in our case, to amplify pulses with a shorter duration. We estimate the generated pulse duration within such a subset of short pulses at a level of 650 as. Considering the demonstrated probability of single spike events, this method is attractive for high repetition-rate free electron lasers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FLASH is the first soft X-ray FEL user facility, routinely providing brilliant photon beams for users since 2005. The second undulator branch of this facility, FLASH2, is gap-tunable, which allows for testing and using advanced lasing concepts. In particular, we developed a two-color operation mode based on the alternatingly tuned undulator segments (every other segment is tuned to the second wavelength). This scheme is advantageous in comparison with a subsequent generation of two colors in two consecutive sections of the undulator line. First, source positions of the two FEL beams are close to each other which makes it easier to focus them on a sample. Second, the amplification is more efficient in this configuration since the segments with respectively "wrong" wavelength still act as bunchers. We studied operation of this scheme in the regime of small and large separation of tunes (up to a factor of two). We developed new methods for online intensity measurements of the two colors simultaneously that require a combination of two detectors. Solid-film electrets and cellular electrets are defined as promising insulating dielectric materials containing permanent electrostatic and polarizations. High-performance charging methods are critical for electret transducers. Unlike dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) charging, the soft X-ray charging method, with its strong penetration ability, has been widely used in electrets after packaging and has even been embedded in high-aspect-ratio structures (HARSs). However, the related charging model and the charging effect of the soft X-ray irradiation remain unclear. In this study, the charge carrier migration theory and the one-dimensional electrostatic model were employed to build the soft X-ray charging models. The influence of soft X-ray irradiation under deferent poling voltages was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The conducted space charge measurement based on a pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) system with a soft X-ray generator revealed that soft X-ray charging can offer higher surface charge densities and piezoelectricity to cellular electrets under the critical poling voltage lower than twice the breakdown voltage. The development of novel coherent and brilliant sources, such as soft X-ray free electron laser (FEL) and high harmonic generation (HHG), enables new ultrafast analysis of the electronic and structural dynamics of a wide variety of materials. Soft X-ray FEL delivers high-brilliance beams with a short pulse duration, high spatial coherence and photon energy tunability. In comparison with FELs, HHG X-ray sources are characterized by a wide spectral bandwidth and few- to sub-femtosecond pulses. The approach will lead to the time-resolved reconstruction of molecular dynamics, shedding light on different photochemical pathways. The high peak brilliance of soft X-ray FELs facilitates investigations in a nonlinear regime, while the broader spectral bandwidth of the HHG sources may provide the simultaneous probing of multiple components. Significant technical breakthroughs in these novel sources are under way to improve brilliance, pulse duration, and to control spectral bandwidth, spot size, and energy resolution. Therefore, in the next few years, the new generation of soft X-ray sources combined with novel experimental techniques, new detectors, and computing capabilities will allow for the study of several extremely fast dynamics, such as vibronic dynamics. In the present review, we discuss recent developments in experiments, performed with soft X-ray FELs and HHG sources, operating near the carbon K-absorption edge, being a key atomic component in biosystems and soft materials. Different spectroscopy methods such as time-resolved pump-probe techniques, nonlinear spectroscopies and photoelectron spectroscopy studies have been addressed in an attempt to better understand fundamental physico-chemical processes. In this paper, we report on the systematic study of different variants of X-ray detectors based on Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology using modified GEM foils with greatly reduced amount of copper. The main goal of this study was understanding the performance of such detectors applied in X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis. Reduction of the amount of copper in the detector structure is crucial for suppression of XRF background from copper, but one has to ensure that key detector parameters are not affected by such modification. The tested detector variants include detectors with different types of copper-less GEM foils, which have been manufactured starting from standard copper-clad foils and removing partially the copper layer in additional post-processing steps. The results are analyzed and discussed with a particular focus on the energy resolution, uniformity of gas gain and energy resolution across the detector area, and on the long-term stability of the gas gain. Long-term stability tests performed for selected detectors do not indicate for any accelerated aging of the copper-less detectors compared to standard detectors using copper-clad GEM foils. A new reduced form-factor three axes digital teslameter, based on the spinning current technique, has been developed. This instrument will be used to characterize the SwissFEL insertion devices at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) for the ATHOS soft X-ray beamline. A detailed and standardized calibration procedure is critical to optimize the performance of this precision instrument. This paper presents the measurement techniques used for the corrective improvements implemented through non-linearity, temperature offset, temperature sensitivity compensation of the Hall probe and electronics temperature compensation. A detailed quantitative analysis of the reduction in errors on the application of each step of the calibration is presented. The percentage peak error reduction attained through calibration of the instrument for reference fields in the range of ±2 T is registered to drop from 1.94% down to 0.02%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The X-ray pulse originating from high altitude nuclear detonation (HAND) is mainly soft X-ray and its intensity is high enough to gasify the penetrated material and then lead to the severe thermo-mechanical deformation of unpenetrated material from the gasified blow-off effect. This effect cannot be directly reproduced in a lab for the lack of the X-ray source like HAND. At present, the low-energy relativistic electron beams resulting from an electron accelerator are usually used to approximately reproduce this effect, but the difference in the energy-deposited profile in materials between the electron and X-ray cannot be eliminated. In this paper, the symmetric linear least squares method was used to optimize the electron spectrum, and the general Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code calculations showed the optimized spectrum can produce the same energy-deposited profile in aluminum, copper, and tantalum with the soft X-rays like 1 keV or 3 keV spectrums. This indicates that it is possible to simulate the severe thermo-mechanical deformation resulting from HAND using the optimized electron spectrums. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a well-known strong inducer of inflammation. However, there is little information regarding how LPS-release behavior affects cellular senescence at the affected area. In this paper, we demonstrate that a vacuum-heating technique (dehydrothermal treatment) can be utilized to prepare an LPS sustained-release gelatin sponge (LS-G). LPS sustained release from gelatin leads to the long-term existence of senescent cells in critical-sized bone defects in rat calvaria. Three types of gelatin sponges were prepared in this study: a medical-grade gelatin sponge with extremely low LPS levels (MG), LS-G, and a LPS rapid-release gelatin sponge (LR-G). Histological (H-E) and immunohistochemical (COX-2, p16, and p21) staining were utilized to evaluate inflammatory reactions and cellular senescence one to three weeks after surgery. Soft X-ray imaging was utilized to estimate new bone formation in the defects. The LR-G led to stronger swelling and COX-2 expression in defects compared to the MG and LS-G at 1 week. Despite a small inflammatory reaction, LS-G implantation led to the long-term existence of senescent cells and hampered bone formation compared to the MG and LR-G. These results suggest that vacuum heating is a viable technique for preparing different types of materials for releasing bacterial components, which is helpful for developing disease models for elucidating cellular senescence and bone regeneration. Energy-resolving photon-counting detectors (PCDs) separate photons from a polychromatic X-ray source into a number of separate energy bins. This spectral information from PCDs would allow advancements in X-ray imaging, such as improving image contrast, quantitative imaging, and material identification and characterization. However, aspects like detector spectral distortions and scattered photons from the object can impede these advantages if left unaccounted for. Scattered X-ray photons act as noise in an image and reduce image contrast, thereby significantly hindering PCD utility. In this paper, we explore and outline several important characteristics of spectral X-ray scatter with examples of soft-material imaging (such as cancer imaging in mammography or explosives detection in airport security). Our results showed critical spectral signatures of scattered photons that depend on a few adjustable experimental factors. Additionally, energy bins over a large portion of the spectrum exhibit lower scatter-to-primary ratio in comparison to what would be expected when using a conventional energy-integrating detector. These important findings allow flexible choice of scatter-correction methods and energy-bin utilization when using PCDs. In the framework of the SwissFEL project at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), a Hall probe bench is being developed for the high-precision magnetic characterization of the insertion devices for the ATHOS soft X-ray beamline. For this purpose, a novel three-axis teslameter has been developed, which will be placed between the undulator and its outer shell in a very limited volumetric space of 150 × 50 × 45 mm. Together with a SENIS® 3-axis Hall probe at the center of the cross sectional area of the undulator, the setup will traverse along the undulator length on a specifically designed rig with minimal vibrations. This teslameter has all the analog signal conditioning circuitry for the Hall probe and also has on board 24-bit digitization. The instrument also handles an interface to a linear absolute encoder. The old instrumentation used only had analog signal conditioning circuitry whilst digitization was done off board. The new instrument also provides a very accurate magnetic field map in the µT range with simultaneous readings from the position encoder at an accuracy of ±3 µm. In this study, we implement attosecond afterburners in an ultrashort soft X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) to improve the performance of generating attosecond pulses. In this scheme, the FEL pulse produced in the normal radiator section is dumped while the well bunched electron beam is reserved and reused in downstream afterburners. Subsequently, radiation in the afterburners gains rapidly as the bunching factor in the current spike is large, making the radiation pulse much shorter and cleaner than that from a normal radiator. A novel three-axis teslameter and other similar machines have been designed and developed for SwissFEL at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). The developed instrument will be used for high fidelity characterisation and optimisation of the undulators for the ATHOS soft X-ray beamline. The teslameter incorporates analogue signal conditioning for the three-axes interface to a SENIS Hall probe, an interface to a Heidenhain linear absolute encoder and an on-board high-resolution 24-bit analogue-to-digital conversion. This is in contrast to the old instrumentation setup used, which only comprises the analogue circuitry with digitization being done externally to the instrument. The new instrument fits in a volumetric space of 150 mm × 50 mm × 45 mm, being very compact in size and also compatible with the in-vacuum undulators. This paper describes the design and the development of the different components of the teslameter. Performance results are presented that demonstrate offset fluctuation and drift (0.1–10 Hz) with a standard deviation of 0.78 µT and a broadband noise (10–500 Hz) of 2.05 µT with an acquisition frequency of 2 kHz. In the experiment of inertial confinement fusion, soft X-ray spectrum unfolding can provide important information to optimize the design of the laser and target. As the laser beams increase, there are limited locations for installing detection channels to obtain measurements, and the soft X-ray spectrum can be difficult to recover. In this paper, a novel recovery method of soft X-ray spectrum unfolding based on compressive sensing is proposed, in which (1) the spectrum recovery is formulated as a problem of accurate signal recovery from very few measurements (i.e., compressive sensing), and (2) the proper basis atoms are selected adaptively over a Legendre orthogonal basis dictionary with a large size and Lasso regression in the sense of ℓ1 norm, which enables the spectrum to be accurately recovered with little measured data from the limited detection channels. Finally, the presented approach is validated with experimental data. The results show that it can still achieve comparable accuracy from only 8 spectrometer detection channels as it has previously done from 14 detection channels. This means that the presented approach is capable of recovering spectrum from the data of limited detection channels, and it can be used to save more space for other detectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
