In the present paper, we apply a blind fitting algorithm to model two-dimensional energy-incidence angle maps of soft x-ray resonant reflectivity measured in nanoscale epitaxial multilayers of multiferroic ε-Fe2O3 grown by pulsed laser deposition. The possibility of fitting the spectral shape of the complex refraction index across the Fe L3 absorption edge without having an initial guess about the optical constants has been demonstrated. The spectral shape fitting of the real (f1) and imaginary (f2) parts of the atomic scattering factor has been carried out by using a specially designed software utilizing OpenCL fast calculations on graphical processing units. The Kramers-Kronig relations between f1 and f2 are automatically taken into account by the fitting algorithm. A reasonable agreement between blindly generated and reference scattering factor spectra derived independently from an x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment has been demonstrated. The blind fitting has been compared with the alternative refinement routines, in which small free variations of the reference spectral shapes (or no variations at all) have been allowed. The presented approach to the resonant x-ray reflectometry modeling makes it unnecessary to acquire the optical constant spectral shapes in advance and, thus, is especially helpful when such spectra cannot be physically measured, e.g., for a buried layer of a multilayer system. Results of Monte Carlo simulations of the electrode-molten salt interface are reported. The system was modeled by soft ions in contact with a soft wall using the Lennard-Jones potential restricted to the repulsion part. The soft wall was formed of C (graphite), Hg, and Pb atoms. Calculations were carried out for the parameter values which would permit making comparison with the real system. The paper presents information on physicochemical properties of the interfacial region, such as the ion singlet distribution functions, the mean electrostatic potential as a function of the distance from the electrode surface, and differential capacitance results as a function of the electrode charges. The differential capacitance curves have a flat and distorted bell shape which vary depending on the kind of the electrode material. We present a thorough soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of a mesoporous titanium dioxide electrode sensitized with the dye 4-(diphenylamino)phenylcyanoacrylic acid, referred to as "L0." Supported by calculations, the suite of XPS, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy allows us to examine bonding interactions between the dye and the surface and the frontier electronic structure at the molecule–oxide interface. While placing these measurements in the context of existing literature, this paper is intended as a useful reference for further studies of more complex triphenylamine based sensitizers. Antiferromagnet does not show the net magnetization, whereas the finite uncompensated moment can residue at the surface. On the surface of the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet, the finite boundary magnetization can acquire the magnetic response. In this paper, we address the magnetic response of the boundary magnetization in the Pt/magnetoelectric Cr2O3/Pt epitaxial trilayer based on the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Decreasing the Cr2O3 thickness down to 15 nm, the film acquired the magnetic responsiveness, which manifested as the rectangular hysteresis in the magnetic field dependence of the AHE. The sizable XMCD intensity and the rectangular magnetic field dependence of the XMCD intensity revealed that the magnetic response was attributed to the interfacial Cr moment. The detailed investigation of AHE and XMCD revealed that the domain wall motion dominated the reversal process of the boundary magnetization, which was directly visualized by the scanning XMCD microscope. The term "laser microexplosion" has been introduced to stress the violent character of the optical breakdown by laser radiation under conditions of tight focusing. Generally, the starting phase of the breakdown has been neglected by the assumption of absorption triggered by the presence of damage precursors. The application of the plasticity–elasticity theory in the analysis of the dynamics of this phenomenon has not been extensively examined to date. This paper formulates a phenomenological model attempting to explain the creation of nanovoids in a soft matter under irradiation by a flux of extreme ultraviolet (XUV)/soft x-ray photons. The combined action of plastic deformation and dissociation waves on soft matter is found to be responsible for the material modifications. It is suggested that localized (volume ≃ λ 3) abundance of energy, coming most likely from photon bunching, constitutes the real onset of the photo-ablative decomposition. It is shown that the coincidental presence of some small number of energy carriers (2–3 XUV photons in the considered case) in such a small volume triggers processes denoted from now on as a laser nanoexplosion. The effect is considered to be the first step in the optical breakdown followed by an intense material removal resembling, to some extent, a phase explosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a correlation between time evolution of ions and electrons with soft and hard x-rays emitted from argon plasma. The plasma setup comprises of two copper electrodes connected with a dc power supply. Faraday cups were used to monitor time evolution of ions, to extract their energy, temperature, and flux. Double Langmuir probe was employed to determine electron temperature, energy, and density. To explore time-resolved emission of soft x-rays, PIN photodiodes filtered with 24 μm aluminum, 90 μm Mylar, 80 μm copper, and 10 μm silver have been used. To evaluate temporal evolution of hard x-rays, a scintillator–photomultiplier system was utilized. The plasma was generated using argon gas at atmospheric pressure 760 Torr and constant flow rate 5 L/min at 7, 9, and 11 kV. The flux, energy, and temperature of Ar ions increase with the increase in the operating potential. Soft x-ray signals last much longer (3000 ns) than those of electrons' and ions' signals (300 ns). The plasma operated at 11 kV permits highest emission of ions, electrons, and x-rays. The ions, electrons, and hard and soft x-ray irradiation on silicon wafer exhibited the presence of damaged trails. Ion irradiation showed the presence of latent damaged trails. Electron irradiation caused more damage to the Si surface compared to ion irradiation due to higher flux and density. Soft x-rays had a lesser effect as compared to Si exposed to hard x-rays due to higher energy of the hard x-rays. In the case of hard x-rays irradiated Si, erupted volcano-like structure is formed. Multiaxial neutron/x-ray imaging and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction techniques play a crucial role in gaining valuable insights into the generation and evolution mechanisms of pulsed radiation sources. Owing to the short emission time (∼200 ns) and drastic changes of the pulsed radiation source, it is necessary to acquire projection data within a few nanoseconds in order to achieve clear computed tomography 3D imaging. As a consequence, projection data that can be used for computed tomography image reconstruction at a certain moment are often available for only a few angles. Traditional algorithms employed in the process of reconstructing 3D images with extremely incomplete data may introduce significant distortions and artifacts into the final image. In this paper, we propose an iterative image reconstruction method using cylindrical harmonic decomposition and a self-supervised denoising network algorithm based on the deep image prior method. We augment the prior information with a 2D total variation prior and a 3D deep image prior. Single-wire Z-pinch imaging experiments have been carried out at Qin-1 facility in five views and four frames, with a time resolution of 3 ns for each frame and a time interval of 40 ns between adjacent frames. Both numerical simulations and experiments verify that our proposed algorithm can achieve high-quality reconstruction results and obtain the 3D intensity distribution and evolution of extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray emission from plasma. This paper presents numerical characterization of a recently developed compact soft x-ray source based on a nanosecond electric discharge in a gas-filled capillary. When operated in CO2 and Ar:He mixture, the source is capable of producing line radiation in wavelength ranges corresponding to the carbon (4.5–5.0 nm) and water (2.3–4.4 nm) transparency windows. Experimentally obtained trends in emission properties are analyzed using a two-temperature magnetohydrodynamic model, which utilizes mean ion approximation for calculation of basic properties of multicomponent plasma. Spatiotemporal distributions of plasma parameters were obtained for a range of gas pressures corresponding to the studied experimental conditions of the soft x-ray source. Peak values of electron density and electron temperature were analyzed and used to interpret the experimentally obtained trends in dependence of the source operation on inlet gas pressure. This paper reports some important properties of a dynamic hohlraum radiation source intended to study the high-temperature opacity of medium-Z atoms. The time-resolved axial radiation power in two x-ray diodes gives the time-evolution of an equivalent black-body temperature that peaks at ∼260 eV at stagnation. Time-gated framing pinhole images show that the source comprises an intense high-temperature core that lasts for ∼2 ns preceded by a 10-ns-long lower-temperature implosion phase that emits mostly softer x rays. Combining pinhole images with soft x-ray power gives a time-resolved brightness radiation temperature that reaches 130 eV. Thus, the lower-temperature source could ionize an opacity sample, then the intense high-temperature radiation pulse could measure its opacity. Likewise, the time-integrated spectrum measured with a spherically bent crystal spectrometer is compatible with multiple blackbodies with different temperatures, from 176 to 185 eV. In this paper, we report the absolute measurement of the spectral sensitivity of a bilamellar tube x-ray streak camera (XRSC) over the 0.1–10 keV range equipped with a CsI photocathode for Laser MégaJoule (LMJ) fusion experiments. This calibration of the XRSC is performed in static mode by using two multi-anode x-ray generators. Two silicon drift detectors (SDDs) previously calibrated at the Physikalisch–Technische–Bundesanstalt radiometric laboratory are used as secondary standards. Both x-ray generators work with a specific monochromator for radiometric measurements. In the sub-keV region, a 1 m-grazing incidence Rowland geometry monochromator specifically developed to handle LMJ's x-ray camera is used, whereas for higher energies (>2 keV), a double-crystal monochromator is employed. The absolute spectral sensitivity of the XRSC is obtained by comparing the CCD counts of the XRSC output with the output counts in x-ray lines recorded by the SDD. The results obtained below 1.2 keV are, to our knowledge, the first measurements of the spectral sensitivity of an XRSC in the soft x-ray range with a CsI photocathode. Comparison with a model describing the spectral dependence of the sensitivity of the XRSC revealed that measurements obtained in the sub-keV region are greater than expected, whereas they agree with the model above 4.5 keV. Linear off-resonant x-ray Raman techniques are capable of detecting the ultrafast electronic coherences generated when a photoexcited wave packet passes through a conical intersection. A hybrid femtosecond or attosecond probe pulse is employed to excite the system and stimulate the emission of the signal photon, where both fields are components of a hybrid pulse scheme. In this paper, we investigate how attosecond pulse trains, as provided by high-harmonic generation processes, perform as probe pulses in the framework of this spectroscopic technique, instead of single Gaussian pulses. We explore different combination schemes for the probe pulse as well as the impact of parameters of the pulse trains on the signals. Furthermore, we show how Raman selection rules and symmetry consideration affect the spectroscopic signal, and we discuss the importance of vibrational contributions to the overall signal. We use two different model systems, representing molecules of different symmetries, and quantum dynamics simulations to study the difference in the spectra. In this paper, we introduce two tempered linear and non-linear time series models, namely, an autoregressive tempered fractionally integrated moving average (ARTFIMA) with α -stable noise and ARTFIMA with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) noise (ARTFIMA-GARCH). We provide estimation procedures for the processes and explain the connection between ARTFIMA and their tempered continuous-time counterparts. Next, we demonstrate an application of the processes to modeling of heavy-tailed data from solar flare soft x-ray emissions. To this end, we study the solar flare data during a period of solar minimum, which occurred most recently in July, August, and September 2017. We use a two-state hidden Markov model to classify the data into two states (lower and higher activity) and to extract stationary trajectories. We do an end-to-end analysis and modeling of the solar flare data using both ARTFIMA and ARTFIMA-GARCH models and their non-tempered counterparts. We show through visual inspection and statistical tests that the ARTFIMA and ARTFIMA-GARCH models describe the data better than the ARFIMA and ARFIMA-GARCH, especially in the second state, which justifies that tempered processes can serve as the state-of-the-art approach to model signals originating from a power-law source with long memory effects. We report on the design and implementation of a new system used to characterize the energy-dependent x-ray transmission curve, Θ(E), through filters used in high-energy density physics diagnostics. Using an Amptek X-123-CdTe x-ray spectrometer together with a partially depleted silicon surface barrier detector, both the energy spectrum and total emission of an x-ray source have been accurately measured. By coupling these detectors with a custom PROTO-XRD x-ray source with interchangeable cathodes, accurate characterizations of Θ(E) for filters of varying materials and thicknesses have been obtained. The validity of the technique has been confirmed by accurately reproducing areal densities for high-purity filters with known x-ray transmission properties. Z-pinches have been explored as efficient soft x-ray sources for many years. To optimize x-ray emission, various z-pinch configurations were tested. This paper presents data obtained with a hybrid gas-puff z-pinch imploding onto on-axis wires on a microsecond, multi-megaampere GIT-12 generator. In our previous experiments, the hybrid gas puff, i.e., an inner deuterium gas puff surrounded by an outer hollow cylindrical plasma shell, was used to produce energetic protons, deuterons, and neutrons up to 60 MeV [Klir et al., New J. Phys. 22, 103036 (2020)]. The behavior of the hybrid gas-puff z-pinch on GIT-12 was interpreted as a high-density plasma opening switch with a microsecond conduction time, 3 MA conduction current, nanosecond opening, and up to 60 MV stand-off voltage. These properties can be employed to transfer the current into an on-axis load with a high rise rate. In the recent experiments on GIT-12, we therefore placed single or multiple aluminum wires on the axis of the hybrid gas-puff z-pinch. Before a current sheath arrived at the axis, a coronal plasma was seen around the wire. A rapid increase in x-ray radiation was observed when the coronal plasma imploded onto the axis. The coronal plasma implosion resulted in a long (2 cm), narrow (∼mm) column radiating in the Al K-shell lines. With the single Al wire of 80 μm diameter, the K-shell x-ray output reached 5.5 ± 0.8 kJ in a 0.6 ± 0.1 TW peak power and 7 ± 1 ns pulse. The higher K-shell yield of 12 ± 2 kJ and peak K-shell power of 0.7 ± 0.1 TW were achieved with four 38 μm diameter Al wires. (Their cross section formed the corners of a square with 1 mm side.) The presence of the wires on the axis significantly suppressed ion acceleration and neutron production. Deuterium-deuterium (DD) neutron yields of about 1.2 × 1011 were 20 times smaller than the yields produced in shots without any wire. The DD neutron yield was increased up to 4.5 × 1011 when the Al wire was replaced by a fiber from deuterated polyethylene. The paper describes the behaviour of plasma within a MA plasma-focus with a novel electrode configuration, in which the anode and anti-anode were both equipped with conical tips. This configuration was applied to test the possibility of reducing the pinch axial dimensions during the radial compression of a current sheath. It made it possible to strengthen a dense plasma jet near the anode end, which ejected plasma into a bigger plasmoidal structure formed in the central pinch region. It did not allow forming an opposite anti-anode jet and stopped the axial motion of this structure. In plasma focus discharges with the deuterium filling, the decay of the anode jet and the corresponding plasmoid evolution were accompanied by the fusion-neutron production. Some results obtained with this configuration have also supported the hypothesis of the acceleration of fast electrons and ions at a release of the magnetic energy during magnetic reconnections in the organized dense plasma structures. The work describes a novel approach to the design of a fast, multichannel measurement system for plasma diagnostics [A. Wojenski et al., Fusion Eng. Des. 123, 727 (2016)]. Its main scope is to provide measurements of soft X-ray (SXR) emission during plasma phenomena at the W-Environment in Steady-state Tokamak (WEST), especially for monitoring and tracing tungsten impurities. This paper describes the vertical Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) camera installed at the WEST [M. Chernyshova et al., J. Instrument. 10, P10022 (2015)]. The designed GEM detector readout board has more than 100 channels, resulting in high-performance requirements for the data acquisition and processing system. The novel system construction approach is that the unit works on the raw signals providing a high quality of the data, especially in the scope of pileup effect analysis. In the case of doubtful results, the source data can be easily reviewed offline. The data selection and transmission are done in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) on the custom boards with the custom Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)-Express Gen2 switch that allows us to register signals from multiple FPGAs and then process the data by complex algorithms [G. Kasprowicz et al., J. Fusion Energy 38, 480 (2019)]. The firmware is replaceable and different working modes can be applied (some under verification): global trigger mode, high-speed data serialization, and extended signal registration. Low level optimized central processing unit software for data readout was also designed [P. Linczuk et al., J. Instrum. 14, C05001 (2019)]. The installation of the system is described due to complex system components' distribution. The first results of the successful acquisition of the plasma at the WEST are discussed. The paper deals with the problems of the deposition of multilayer Mo/Si mirrors (MLMs), reflecting in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range, onto microelectromechanical system (MEMS). Such MEMS micromirrors can be used to control beams of EUV and soft x-ray radiation, in particular, as spatial modulators of the radiation flux (dynamic masks) for maskless EUV lithography (EUVL). The requirements of the surfaces of such micromirrors for use in MEMS for maskless EUVL are analyzed. Experimental results on the roughness and the surface shapes of micromirrors commercially available MEMS with a pixel size of 8 x 8 µm are presented. The reflection coefficients of the Mo/Si MLMs and the distortions of the shapes of the micromirrors due to internal stresses in the films are studied. The reflection coefficient of Mo/Si MLMs, containing a proportion of molybdenum in the period, optimized for maximum reflection coefficient at a wavelength of 13.5 nm, was about 3%. Samples with stress-compensating Cr/Sc under-layers have overall reflection coefficients up to 36%; taking into account the losses associated with the gaps and topology of the micromirrors, the reflection coefficient was 43%. Soft x-ray (SXR) tomography is a key diagnostic method for impurity transport study in tokamaks since it allows for local impurity density reconstruction. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) radiative environment in deuterium–deuterium and deuterium–tritium phases will limit the choices of SXR detector technologies, and gas detectors are one of the most promising solutions. In this paper, we, thus, investigate the SXR tomography possibilities on ITER using Low Voltage Ionization Chambers (LVICs). The study contains the development of a LVIC synthetic diagnostic and its application to estimate the LVIC tomographic capabilities in an ITER D–T scenario, including the influence of LVIC parameters and noise in the measurements. Laser produced plasma (LPP) soft x-ray and extreme ultraviolet sources utilize various types of targets. Some of them are based on gaseous targets. The most important disadvantage of such targets is the very limited number of elements that can be used in the gaseous form under normal conditions, including chemical compounds in the gaseous state. In this paper, the authors propose a new type of target, constituting an extension of the gaseous target, namely aerosol target, based on solutions of solid chemical compounds in liquids. Unlike previous attempts to produce aerosol targets from overheated liquids, in our system, the target is created by injection of a mist, preformed in a dedicated cell, into the vacuum chamber. Such targets have many advantages: the emission spectra can be adjusted by choosing proper chemical compounds, the aerosol target is elongated, hence, the laser focus can be positioned at a relatively long distance from the nozzle outlet, its average density can be higher compared to gaseous targets. In this work, such a target and its usefulness for the LPP soft x-ray source was demonstrated. The target was investigated by the soft x-ray backlighting method. Its density distribution at the position of the laser focus was determined. The emission spectra from the soft x-ray range, corresponding to multiple charged ions, originating from the solvent and the diluted salt were measured. A novel GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) system has been installed on experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) which is used for collecting the line integral of the soft X-ray radiation (SXR) through a pinhole-collimated Beryllium window. The sightline of the 2-D GEM system is tangential to the toroidal field. To obtain the local SXR emission, the Tikhonov algorithm is applied for the imaging of the poloidal cross section emission in the vacuum vessel. In the meanwhile, the L-curve method is used to find an optimized solution of the regularization parameters. The tomography reliability has been tested with a known emission function where the error is also discussed. The tomography method has been coded as a graphic user interface for the fast analysis of GEM experimental data. We present a possibility of reaching higher energy absorption edges of organic materials, beyond the carbon K-edge, in the near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy technique using a compact laser-produced plasma soft X-ray (SXR) source based on a double-stream gas puff target. The source was optimized for emission in the SXR spectral range from 1.5 to 5 nm wavelength using the krypton/helium target. The emission spectrum of the source and the absorption spectrum of the investigated sample were measured simultaneously by means of a grazing incidence spectrometer, equipped with a single, large aperture diffractive element. Based on both spectra, the optical density was computed for the silicon nitride membranes in a transmission mode, to reveal the NEXAFS features near the nitrogen K-edge. Moreover, due to spectral narrowing of the SXR emission by the use of titanium filter, reaching the titanium L-edge was also possible. Multiple SXR pulse data were compared to single SXR pulse (single-shot) data as well as to the numerical simulations. In the present study, soft x-ray optical properties of off-stoichiometric boron carbide thin films are investigated, and the structure and chemical composition of the film is analyzed using angle dependent x-ray reflectivity and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. Energy dependent soft x-ray reflectivity measured at a fixed grazing angle of 1.5° is used to determine the optical constants in the boron K edge region by applying the Kramers–Kronig technique. The measured optical constants show near edge fine features corresponding to σ* and π* resonances. The electronic transitions corresponding to σ* resonance cause a 40%–75% increase in the delta value in the above boron K edge region. The π* transitions corresponding to off-stoichiometric nature of the boron carbide are observed in the absorption spectra near ∼192.7 eV. Operando time-resolved soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-SXAS) is an effective method to reveal the photochemical processes of metal complexes in solutions. In this study, we have developed the TR-SXAS measurement system for observing various photochemical reactions in solutions by the combination of laser pump pulses with soft x-ray probe pulses from the synchrotron radiation. For the evaluation of the developed TR-SXAS system, we have measured nitrogen K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectra of aqueous iron phenanthroline solutions during a photoinduced spin transition process. The decay process of the high spin state to the low spin state in the iron complex has been obtained from the ligand side by N K-edge XAS, and the time constant is close to that obtained from the central metal side by time-resolved Fe K-edge XAS in the previous studies. Short-period multilayer mirrors are used in wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence to extend the wavelength range available with naturally occurring Bragg-crystals. W/Si multilayer mirrors with a period of 2.5 nm are used to reflect and disperse elements in the O-Kα–Al-Kα range. However, the reflectance is far from theoretical due to nanoscale W-Si intermixing and formation of WSix. In this work, B4C diffusion barriers were applied in sputter deposited 2.5 nm W/Si multilayers to inhibit W–Si interaction. A peak reflectance of 45% at 9.7° grazing was measured at a wavelength of 0.834 nm—the highest reported in the literature so far. Diffuse scattering measurements revealed no change in interfacial roughness when applying B4C barriers compared to W/Si. A hybrid grazing incidence x-ray reflectivity and x-ray standing wave fluorescence analysis revealed an increase in W concentration of the absorber layer after the application of B4C barriers. Chemical analysis suggests a partial replacement of W silicide bonds with W carbide/boride bonds from the B4C barrier. Gaussian process tomography (GPT) is a recently developed tomography method based on the Bayesian probability theory [J. Svensson, JET Internal Report EFDA-JET-PR(11)24, 2011 and Li et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 84, 083506 (2013)]. By modeling the soft X-ray (SXR) emissivity field in a poloidal cross section as a Gaussian process, the Bayesian SXR tomography can be carried out in a robust and extremely fast way. Owing to the short execution time of the algorithm, GPT is an important candidate for providing real-time reconstructions with a view to impurity transport and fast magnetohydrodynamic control. In addition, the Bayesian formalism allows quantifying uncertainty on the inferred parameters. In this paper, the GPT technique is validated using a synthetic data set expected from the WEST tokamak, and the results are shown of its application to the reconstruction of SXR emissivity profiles measured on Tore Supra. This paper introduces a novel active snubber cell for soft switching pulse width modulation DC-DC converters. In the proposed converter, the main switch is turned on under zero voltage transition and turned off under zero voltage switching (ZVS). The auxiliary switch is turned on under zero current switching (ZCS) and turned off under zero current transition. The main diode is turned on under ZVS and turned off under ZCS. All of the other semiconductors in the converter are turned on and off with soft switching. There is no extra voltage stress on the semiconductor devices. Besides, the proposed converter has simple structure and ease of control due to common ground. The detailed theoretical analysis of the proposed converter is presented and also verified with both simulation and experimental study at 100 kHz switching frequency and 600 W output power. Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) radiation is a short-wavelength light source that has important applications in many fields, such as optical communication, particle manipulation, and ultrahigh resolution imaging. However, the highly absorptive nature of EUV light makes it challenging to design suitable focusing optics, such as focal splitters, to properly manipulate the energetic light. Here, we propose modified spiral photon sieves to transform EUV laser light into azimuthally splitting focusing. A genetic algorithm was used to design and optimize the azimuthally focal splitters. A capillary discharge EUV laser at 46.9 nm was used to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method, and PMMA targets were used to record the focused laser spot. The profile of the recorded patterns measured by atomic force microscopy shows that the focal spots in the experiment are diffraction-limited and agreed with the theoretical analysis. Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are excited by femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (EUV) transient gratings (TGs) in a room-temperature ferrimagnetic DyCo5 alloy. TGs are generated by crossing a pair of EUV pulses from a free electron laser with the wavelength of 20.8 nm matching the Co M-edge, resulting in a SAW wavelength of Λ = 44 nm. Using the pump-probe transient grating scheme in reflection geometry, the excited SAWs could be followed in the time range of −10 to 100 ps in the thin film. Coherent generation of TGs by ultrafast EUV pulses allows to excite SAW in any material and to investigate their couplings to other dynamics, such as spin waves and orbital dynamics. In contrast, we encountered challenges in detecting electronic and magnetic signals, potentially due to the dominance of the larger SAW signal and the weakened reflection signal from underlying layers. A potential solution for the latter challenge involves employing soft x-ray probes, albeit introducing additional complexities associated with the required grazing incidence geometry. Hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) is a powerful technique to characterize the chemical and electronic structures of materials. In energy conversion devices, often composed of a stack of thin layers and thus containing multiple buried interfaces, the increased probing depth of HAXPES, compared to conventional x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, makes it a technique of choice to ultimately reveal a more comprehensive device-relevant picture. In this contribution, we provide a brief review of recent HAXPES experiments conducted at the High Kinetic Energy Photoelectron Spectrometer endstation located at the BESSY II KMC-1 beamline at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH, focusing on three different prominent sample material systems widely used in energy conversion devices: (1) Cu-chalcogenides, (2) metal oxides, and (3) halide perovskites. The findings revealed by these studies highlight the advantage of knowledge-based heterointerface design in energy conversion devices, building interface models based on direct measurements targeting the entire structure as only possible by HAXPES. Mid-Z dopant in ablator is very important in point design targets. In this paper, we develop a method to evaluate the soft x-ray transport of doped material with one dimensional planar target. The targets are designed as sandwich, so that the mid-layer is heated by M band, shock and thermal wave. The transmission fluxes from heated targets are measured with band-pass x-ray diodes. The Si and Ge dopants are evaluated with this method. The experimental results show that 1-1.6 keV x-ray transmission flux through Si-sandwich is higher than that through Ge-sandwich all the time. Also, the comparison of opacities shows that the opacity of Si is lower than that of Ge in the range of 1-1.6 keV, which is consistent with the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we introduce a new method to calibrate the absolute sensitivity of a soft X-ray streak camera (SXRSC). The calibrations are done in the static mode by using a small laser-produced X-ray source. A calibrated X-ray CCD is used as a secondary standard detector to monitor the X-ray source intensity. In addition, two sets of holographic flat-field grating spectrometers are chosen as the spectral discrimination systems of the SXRSC and the X-ray CCD. The absolute sensitivity of the SXRSC is obtained by comparing the signal counts of the SXRSC to the output counts of the X-ray CCD. Results show that the calibrated spectrum covers the range from 200 eV to 1040 eV. The change of the absolute sensitivity in the vicinity of the K-edge of the carbon can also be clearly seen. The experimental values agree with the calculated values to within 29% error. Compared with previous calibration methods, the proposed method has several advantages: a wide spectral range, high accuracy, and simple data processing. The soft X-ray (SXR) emission provides valuable insight into processes happening inside of hightemperature plasmas. A standard method for deriving the local emissivity profiles of the plasma from the line-of-sight integrals measured by pinhole cameras is the tomographic inversion. Such an inversion is challenging due to its ill-conditioned nature and because the reconstructed profiles depend not only on the quality of the measurements but also on the inversion algorithm used. This paper provides a detailed description of several tomography algorithms, which solve the inversion problem of Tikhonov regularization with linear computational complexity in the number of basis functions. The feasibility of combining these methods with the minimum Fisher information regularization is demonstrated, and various statistical methods for the optimal choice of the regularization parameter are investigated with emphasis on their reliability and robustness. Finally, the accuracy and the capability of the methods are demonstrated by reconstructions of experimental SXR profiles, featuring poloidal asymmetric impurity distributions as measured at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. Various types of targetry are used nowadays in laser matter interaction experiments. Such targets are characterized using different methods capable of acquiring information about the targets such as density, spatial distribution, and temporal behavior. In this mini-review paper, a particular type of target will be presented. The targets under consideration are gas puff targets of various and novel geometries. Those targets were investigated using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray (SXR) imaging techniques, such as shadowgraphy, tomography, and pinhole camera imaging. X-ray films remain a key asset for high-resolution x-ray spectral imaging in high-energy-density experiments conducted at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The soft x-ray Opacity Spectrometer (OpSpec) fielded at the NIF has an elliptically shaped crystal design that measures x rays in the 900–2100 eV range and currently uses an image plate as the detecting medium. However, Agfa D4 and D3sc x-ray films' higher spatial resolution provides increased spectral resolution to the data over the IP-TR image plates, driving the desire for regular use of x-ray film as a detecting medium. The calibration of Agfa D4 x-ray film for use in the OpSpec is communicated here. These calibration efforts are vital to the accuracy of the NIF opacity measurements and are conducted in a previously un-studied x-ray energy range under a new film development protocol required by NIF. The absolute response of Agfa D4 x-ray film from 705 to 4620 eV has been measured using the Nevada National Security Site Manson x-ray source. A broader range of energies was selected to compare results with previously published data. The article addresses how to create inductance-free plasma and use it to excite soft x-ray lasers. The method employs a bifilar phenomenon in which one part of the pulsed current flows via the plasma column while the other part runs in the opposite direction via the closely placed external conductor. The electromagnetic fields formed by the plasma and return conductor are adjusted by lowering the distance between them to neutralize the magnetic field of the bifilar. Because the net transient magnetic field is drastically reduced, the plasma-conductor mutual inductance is near zero during current rise and decay. The inductance-free (L ∼ 2 nH) 35 cm-long Z pinches in a 3.1 mm-diameter argon-filled alumina capillary with current rise and decay times of 15 ns, dI/dt > 1012 A/s, and amplitudes up to 17 kA were predicted, realized, and verified to be suitable for pumping soft x-ray Ar+8 lasers. Without the bifilar phenomenon, the 35 cm Z pinches obey a 200 nH inductance that restricts the rise and decay durations of currents to 150 ns. The 35 cm Z pinches with 2 nH inductance generated 46.9 nm laser pulses with up to 4 μJ of energy and a beam divergence of 2 mrad at a low operating voltage of 35–45 kV, compared to 0.1–0.8 MV for similar lasers. Novel ultrafast x-ray sources based on high harmonic generation and at x-ray free electron lasers are opening up new opportunities to resolve complex ultrafast processes in condensed phase systems with exceptional temporal resolution and atomic site specificity. In this perspective, we present techniques for resolving charge localization, transfer, and separation processes in organic semiconductors and organic photovoltaic devices with time-resolved soft x-ray spectroscopy. We review recent results in ultrafast soft x-ray spectroscopy of these systems and discuss routes to overcome the technical challenges in performing time-resolved x-ray experiments on photosensitive materials with poor thermal conductivity and low pump intensity thresholds for nonlinear effects. When a nominally flat surface is bombarded with a broad ion beam at oblique incidence, nanoscale ripples often develop on the surface. For high angles of incidence, surfaces typically develop into a terraced form at the late stages of their time evolution. In the present work, this process is exploited to prevent unwanted smoothing of ordered terraced substrates during the deposition of thin films. A Si surface prepatterned with a 500 nm pitch binary grating structure was bombarded at oblique incidence by a low energy Xe + ion beam to establish an ordered terraced topography. Subsequently, Si/SiO2 bilayers were deposited on the surface, and further oblique incidence Xe+ bombardment was performed following the deposition of each Si layer to re-establish the ordered terraced topography. Self-organized processes, such as in the present work, that only require exposure of a surface to a plasma or ion source have the potential to provide a simple and inexpensive route for fabricating large-area nanostructured surfaces. Wire X-pinches (WXPs) have been studied comprehensively as fast (∼ 1 ns pulse width), small (∼ 1 μ m) x-ray sources, created by twisting two or more fine wires into an "X" to produce a localized region of extreme magnetic pressure at the cross-point. Recently, two alternatives to the traditional WXP have arisen: the hybrid X-pinch (HXP), composed of two conical electrodes bridged by a thin wire or capillary, and the laser-cut foil X-pinch (LCXP), cut from a thin foil using a laser. We present a comparison of copper wire, hybrid, and laser-cut foil X-pinches on a single experimental platform: UC San Diego's ∼ 200 kA, 150 ns rise time GenASIS driver. All configurations produced 1–2 ns pulse width, ≤ 5 μ m soft x-ray (Cu L-shell, ∼ 1 keV) sources (resolutions diagnostically limited) with comparable fluxes. WXP results varied with linear mass and wire count, but consistently showed separate pinch and electron-beam-driven sources. LCXPs produced the brightest (∼ 1 MW), smallest (≤ 5 μ m) Cu K-shell sources, and spectroscopic data showed both H-like Cu K α lines indicative of source temperatures ≥ 2 keV, and cold K α (∼ 8050 eV) characteristic of electron beam generated sources, which were not separately resolved on other diagnostics (within 1–2 ns and ≤ 200 μ m). HXPs produced minimal K-shell emission and reliably single, bright, and small L-shell sources after modifications to shape the early current pulse through them. Benefits and drawbacks for each configuration are discussed to provide potential X-pinch users with the information required to choose the configuration best suited to their needs. In order to understand the mechanism of the ferromagnetism in the ferromagnetic semiconductor Ga 1 − x Mn x As [(Ga,Mn)As], we have investigated the magnetic behavior on a microscopic level through systematic temperature (T)- and magnetic field (H)-dependent soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments at the Mn L 2 , 3 absorption edges. The T and H dependences of XMCD intensities have been analyzed using a model consisting of the ferromagnetic (FM), paramagnetic, and superparamagnetic (SPM) components. Intriguingly, we have found a common behavior for the ferromagnetic ordering process in (Ga,Mn)As samples with different Mn concentrations (4% and 10.8%) and different Curie temperature (T C ) values (65, 120, and 164 K). In particular, the SPM component develops well above T C , indicating that local FM regions are formed well above T C . The present findings indicate that the onset of ferromagnetic ordering is triggered by local electronic states around the substitutional Mn ions rather than uniform electronic states considered by mean-field theories. Insight into the most representative ferromagnetic semiconductor, (Ga,Mn)As, provided by the present study will be an important step in understanding the mechanism of ferromagnetic ordering in various ferromagnetic semiconductor families. We investigated, by using soft x rays, one of the most fundamental properties in multiferroics, that is, coupled or decoupled feature among coexisting multiple (anti)ferroic order parameters for two types of multiferroic hexaferrites. Circular dichroic signals observed at x-ray resonance for diffraction and absorption enable us to resolve several kinds of magnetic domains, which are spatial distributions of the respective order parameters. We examined magnetic field effects on the domains and unveiled the features of the order parameters. It is found that the coupled or decoupled features of the order parameters are explained by the symmetry analysis based on the Landau theory. These findings contribute to an understanding of magnetoelectric couplings in multiferroics and to exploiting a wide variety of their functionalities. In addition, we suggest a circular dichroic specular off-peak scattering at resonance as a powerful technique for studying a surface state of a magnetic order in an expansive range of quantum materials. Transition metal oxide thin films and heterostructures are promising platforms to achieve full control of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain structure in patterned features as needed for AFM spintronic devices. In this work, soft x-ray photoemission electron microscopy was utilized to image AFM domains in micromagnets patterned into La0.7Sr0.3FeO3 (LSFO) thin films and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO)/LSFO superlattices. A delicate balance exists between magnetocrystalline anisotropy, shape anisotropy, and exchange interactions such that the AFM domain structure can be controlled using parameters such as LSFO and LSMO layer thickness, micromagnet shape, and temperature. In LSFO thin films, shape anisotropy gains importance only in micromagnets where at least one extended edge is aligned parallel to an AFM easy axis. In contrast, in the limit of ultrathin LSFO layers in the LSMO/LSFO superlattice, shape anisotropy effects dominate such that the AFM spin axes at micromagnet edges can be aligned along any in-plane crystallographic direction. Interfacial behaviors and properties play critical roles in determining key practical parameters of electrochemical energy storage systems, such as lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. Soft x-ray spectroscopy features shallow penetration depth and demonstrates inherent surface sensitivity to characterize the interfacial behavior with elemental and chemical sensitivities. In this review, we present a brief survey of modern synchrotron-based soft x-ray spectroscopy of the interface in electrochemical energy storage systems. The technical focus includes core-level spectroscopy of conventional x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We show that while conventional techniques remain powerful for probing the chemical species on the surface, today's material research studies have triggered much more demanding chemical sensitivity that could only be offered by advanced techniques such as RIXS. Another direction in the field is the rapid development of various in situ/operando characterizations of complex electrochemical systems. Notably, the solid-state battery systems provide unique advantages for future studies of both the surface/interface and the bulk properties under operando conditions. Electron transport is of fundamental importance and has application in a variety of fields. Different scattering mechanisms affect electron transport in the condensed phase; hence, it is important to comprehensively understand these mechanisms and their scattering cross sections to predict electron transport properties. Whereas electron transport is well understood for high kinetic energy (KE) electrons, there is a discrepancy in the experimental and theoretical values for the Inelastic Mean Free Path (IMFP) in the low KE regime. In this work, velocity map imaging soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is applied to unsupported organic nanoparticles (squalene) to extract experimental values of inelastic and elastic mean free paths (EMFPs). The obtained data are used to calculate corresponding scattering cross sections. The data demonstrate a decrease in the IMFP and increase in the EMFP with increasing electron KE between 10 and 50 eV. We have developed a new scintillator-based optical soft x-ray (OSXR) diagnostic system for KSTAR. By utilizing fiber optic faceplates, mm-size lens arrays, and fiber bundles, we have successfully constructed a novel optical system for scintillator-based soft x-ray detection to overcome the limited vacuum-port conditions in KSTAR. P47 (Y2SiO5), which has a fast rise (∼7 ns) and decay (∼100 ns) time sufficient for detecting plasma instabilities observed in the kHz–MHz spectral range, was selected as the scintillator material for the KSTAR OSXR system. Scintillation toward each detection channel is collected by the lens arrays coupled to optical fiber cores, which are connected to the photodetector system. Initial results obtained during the 2022 KSTAR experimental campaign support the validity of the OSXR data through the consistency of OSXR measurement results with other diagnostics. We also observe that the OSXR system can capture magnetohydrodynamic activities, such as sawtooth oscillations, and provide valuable information for disruption mitigation studies using shattered pellet injection. Soft x-ray diffraction gratings coated with a supermirror-type multilayer were designed to enhance diffraction efficiency in the energy range of 2–4 keV by means of numerical calculations. The optimized groove depth and incidence angle are 2.05 nm and 88.65°, respectively, for the grating having a groove density of 3200 grooves/mm. Regarding the multilayer structure, the optimum number of B4C/W layers pair was 11 and the thickness of B4C was increased from bottom to top, while that of W was kept constant. The replacement of the top layer of W by either Co, Cr, or Ni was an effective means of obtaining uniform diffraction efficiency. In the region of 2–4 keV, the calculated diffraction efficiency of the designed gratings was up to ∼5.3%, on average, and almost eight times larger than that of ∼0.7% of an Au coated grating. In this Review Article, we discuss a range of soft x-ray power diagnostics at inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and pulsed-power fusion facilities. This Review Article describes current hardware and analysis approaches and covers the following methods: x-ray diode arrays, bolometers, transmission grating spectrometers, and associated crystal spectrometers. When impinging on optical structures or passing in their vicinity, free electrons can spontaneously emit electromagnetic radiation, a phenomenon generally known as cathodoluminescence. Free-electron radiation comes in many guises: Cherenkov, transition, and Smith–Purcell radiation, but also electron scintillation, commonly referred to as incoherent cathodoluminescence. While those effects have been at the heart of many fundamental discoveries and technological developments in high-energy physics in the past century, their recent demonstration in photonic and nanophotonic systems has attracted a great deal of attention. Those developments arose from predictions that exploit nanophotonics for novel radiation regimes, now becoming accessible thanks to advances in nanofabrication. In general, the proper design of nanophotonic structures can enable shaping, control, and enhancement of free-electron radiation, for any of the above-mentioned effects. Free-electron radiation in nanophotonics opens the way to promising applications, such as widely tunable integrated light sources from x-ray to THz frequencies, miniaturized particle accelerators, and highly sensitive high-energy particle detectors. Here, we review the emerging field of free-electron radiation in nanophotonics. We first present a general, unified framework to describe free-electron light–matter interaction in arbitrary nanophotonic systems. We then show how this framework sheds light on the physical underpinnings of many methods in the field used to control and enhance free-electron radiation. Namely, the framework points to the central role played by the photonic eigenmodes in controlling the output properties of free-electron radiation (e.g., frequency, directionality, and polarization). We then review experimental techniques to characterize free-electron radiation in scanning and transmission electron microscopes, which have emerged as the central platforms for experimental realization of the phenomena described in this review. We further discuss various experimental methods to control and extract spectral, angular, and polarization-resolved information on free-electron radiation. We conclude this review by outlining novel directions for this field, including ultrafast and quantum effects in free-electron radiation, tunable short-wavelength emitters in the ultraviolet and soft x-ray regimes, and free-electron radiation from topological states in photonic crystals. Magnetoresistive sensors have been enthusiastically selected for applications requiring magnetic field detection with small footprint sensors. The optimisation of the sensor response includes using soft magnetic free layers, based on CoFeB and NiFe alloys. Here we report the TMR and noise performance of magnetically saturated in-plane MTJ sensors including CoFeBTa and CoFeSiB soft magnetic films as free layers (FL). Assessing magneto-crystalline anisotropy μ0Hk values of 2.1 and 0.7 mT in CoFeB 2.5 (nm)/Ru 0.2/CoFeBTa 4 and CoFeB 3/Ru 0.2/CoFeSiB 4 compared to 1.7 mT in CoFeB 2.5/Ru 0.2/NiFe 4, together with an improved magnetoresistance of 230% in CoFeBSi comparing with 170% (NiFe) with superior noise characteristics, with Hooge parameter of αH = 7 × 10−11 μm2.
