Today, food scientists are interested in more rational use of crops that possess desirable nutritional properties, and buckwheat is one of the functional pseudocereals that represents a rich source of bioactive compounds (BACs) and nutrients, phytochemicals, antimicrobial (AM) agents and antioxidants (AOs), which can be effectively applied in the prevention of malnutrition and celiac disease and treatment of various important health problems. There is ample evidence of the high potential of buckwheat consumption in various forms (food, dietary supplements, home remedies or alone, or in synergy with pharmaceutical drugs) with concrete benefits for human health. Contamination as well as other side-effects of all the aforementioned forms for application in different ways in humans must be seriously considered. This review paper presents an overview of the most important recent research related to buckwheat bioactive compounds (BACs), highlighting their various functions and proven positive effects on human health. Bacteria are known to be constantly adapting to become resistant to antibiotics. Currently, efficient antibacterial compounds are still available; however, it is only a matter of time until these compounds also become inefficient. Ribonucleases are the enzymes responsible for the maturation and degradation of RNA molecules, and many of them are essential for microbial survival. Members of the PNPase and RNase II families of exoribonucleases have been implicated in virulence in many pathogens and, as such, are valid targets for the development of new antibacterials. In this paper, we describe the use of virtual high-throughput screening (vHTS) to identify chemical compounds predicted to bind to the active sites within the known structures of RNase II and PNPase from Escherichia coli. The subsequent in vitro screening identified compounds that inhibited the activity of these exoribonucleases, with some also affecting cell viability, thereby providing proof of principle for utilizing the known structures of these enzymes in the pursuit of new antibacterials. In this paper, we address the problem of antimicrobial resistance in the case of Helicobacter pylori with a crystal engineering approach. Two antibiotics of the fluoroquinolone class, namely, levofloxacin (LEV) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), have been co-crystallized with the flavonoids quercetin (QUE), myricetin (MYR), and hesperetin (HES), resulting in the formation of four co-crystals, namely, LEV∙QUE, LEV∙MYR, LEV2∙HES, and CIP∙QUE. The co-crystals were obtained from solution, slurry, or mechanochemical mixing of the reactants. LEV∙QUE and LEV∙MYR were initially obtained as the ethanol solvates LEV∙QUE∙xEtOH and LEV∙MYR∙xEtOH, respectively, which upon thermal treatment yielded the unsolvated forms. All co-crystals were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetric analysis. The antibacterial performance of the four co-crystals LEV∙QUE, LEV∙MYR, LEV2∙HES, and CIP∙QUE in comparison with that of the physical mixtures of the separate components was tested via evaluation of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). The results obtained indicate that the association with the co-formers, whether co-crystallized or forming a physical mixture with the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), enhances the antimicrobial activity of the fluoroquinolones, allowing them to significantly reduce the amount of API otherwise required to display the same activity against H. pylori. The study investigates the phytochemical profile, antioxidant capacity, and antimicrobial activities of ethanol (ChL-EtOH) and ethyl acetate (ChL-EtOAc) extracts from Chamaenerion latifolium L. (ChL) harvested in Kazakhstan. The ChL-EtOH extract exhibited higher total phenolic (267.48 ± 3.44 mg GAE/g DE) and flavonoid content (24.18 ± 1.06 mg QE/g DE) compared to ChL-EtOAc. HPLC-UV-ESI/MS identified key phenolic acids and flavonoids, including gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, and quercetin 3-glucoside. FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of characteristic functional groups. Antioxidant assays revealed strong DPPH scavenging and FRAP activities, with ChL-EtOH showing superior results (IC50 = 21.31 ± 0.65 μg/mL and 18.13 ± 0.15 μg/mL, respectively). Additionally, ChL-EtOH displayed notable antimicrobial efficacy against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as the fungal strain Candida albicans. These findings suggest that ethanol extraction is more efficient for isolating bioactive compounds from ChL, underscoring its potential for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. Bacterial infections are a great threat to human health, and the irrational use of antibiotics has largely compromised the efficacy of antibiotic therapy due to the emergence of drug‐resistant pathogens. It is known that synthesizing new antibiotics is difficult and time‐consuming. In this case, developing antibiotics‐independent antibacterial approaches is of great importance and significance. In the past decade, various functional nanomaterials have shown great potentials in the treatment of bacterial infections. Among these nanomaterials, transition metal carbides or nitrides, namely MXene, have attracted much attention. As the novel 2D nanosheets, MXene can serve either as a direct antibacterial agent due to its intrinsic antibacterial activity and photothermal effect, or as an efficient carrier to load photosensitizers and photocatalysts for photodynamic and photocatalytic therapy. In recent few years, the number of literatures regarding MXene‐based antibacterial therapy has increased rapidly. Thus, it is the time to systematically summarize the applications of MXene in the treatment of bacteria, especially those with drug resistance. Herein, it is aimed to summarize the preparation methods for MXene and provide a comprehensive understanding of its properties and applications in antibacterial therapy. Background: Foodborne infections affect approximately 600 million people annually. Simultaneously, many plants contain substances like organic acids, which have antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of 21 organic acids, naturally occurring in plants, on four foodborne bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enterica Typhimurium) and two fungi (Geotrichum candidum and Penicillium candidum). Methods: The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the organic acids against foodborne bacteria and in silico toxicity prediction of acids were investigated. Results: Benzoic and salicylic acids exhibit the best activity against foodborne bacteria (mean MIC < 1 mg/mL). Acetic, chlorogenic, formic, malic, nicotinic, and rosmarinic acids demonstrate slightly weaker activity (mean MICs 1–2 mg/mL). Other acids have moderate or poor activity. The effectiveness of organic acids against foodborne fungi is weaker than against bacteria. Most acids require high concentrations (from 10 to >100 mg/mL) to inhibit fungal growth effectively. The predicted LD50 of organic acids ranges from 48 to 5000 mg/kg. Those potentially safe as food preservatives (MIC < LD50) include ascorbic, chlorogenic, malic, nicotinic, rosmarinic, salicylic, succinic, tannic, and tartaric acids. The studied organic acids are not carcinogenic but many can cause adverse effects such as skin sensitization, eye irritation, and potential nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, or neurotoxicity. Conclusions: Most of the investigated plant-derived organic acids exhibit good antibacterial activity and moderate or poor antifungal effects. Among 21 acids, only 9 appear to be safe as food preservatives (MIC < LD50). The relationship between MIC and LD50 is crucial in determining the suitability of organic acids as food preservatives, ensuring that they are effective against bacteria or fungi at concentrations that are not harmful to humans. Antimicrobial resistance poses a global health threat, with Staphylococcus aureus emerging as a notorious pathogen capable of forming stubborn biofilms and regulating virulence through quorum sensing (QS). In the quest for novel therapeutic strategies, this groundbreaking study unveils the therapeutic potential of Paederia foetida Linn., an Asian medicinal plant containing various bioactive compounds, contributing to its antimicrobial activities, in the battle against S. aureus. Through a comprehensive approach, we investigated the effect of ethanolic P. foetida leaf extract on S. aureus biofilms, QS, and antimicrobial activity. The extract exhibited promising inhibitory effects against S. aureus including the biofilm-forming strain and MRSA. Real-time PCR analysis revealed significant downregulation of key virulence and biofilm genes, suggesting interference with QS. Biofilm assays quantified the extract's ability to disrupt and prevent biofilm formation. LC-MS/MS analysis identified quercetin and kaempferol glycosides as potential bioactive constituents, while molecular docking studies explored their binding to the QS transcriptional regulator SarA. Computational ADMET predictions highlighted favorable intestinal absorption but potential P-glycoprotein interactions limiting oral bioavailability. While promising anti-virulence effects were demonstrated, the high molecular weights and excessive hydrogen bond donors/acceptors of the flavonoid glycosides raise concerns regarding drug-likeness and permeability. Anethum graveolens is an aromatic plant traditionally used as an antispasmodic and carminative. The objective of this study is to analyze the chemical composition of the essential oils and extracts obtained from seeds gathered in Errachidia, southern Morocco. Additionally, the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of these oils and extracts will be evaluated. GC-MS analysis of the EO isolated by hydrodistillation revealed that its main compounds were E-anethole (38.13%), estragole (29.32%), fenchone (17.21%), and α-pinene (7.37%). The phenolic components were extracted using the methods of decoction and Soxhlet. The assay of the phenolic compounds showed that A. graveolens seeds contained considerable amounts of polyphenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins, with variable levels depending on the extract analyzed. HPLC/UV-ESI-MS analyses performed on the decoction revealed a structural diversity of the molecules present in this extract, the most important of which were umbelliferone (12.35%), 3-hydroxyflavone (11.23%), rosmanol (8.95%), biotin (8.36%), emmotin H (4.91%), and coumarin (4.21%). The antioxidant activity, as determined by three techniques (DPPH•, FRAP, and CAT), demonstrated that the essential oils (EOs) and extracts had a potent capacity to counteract detrimental free radicals, control the generation of reactive oxygen species, and mitigate oxidative damages. The antimicrobial activity of the Eos and extracts was carried out in a liquid medium against five strains (E. cloacae, K. pneumoniae, E. coli, S. aureus, and S. epidermidis) and four candidiasis (C. albicans, C. dubliniensis, C. tropicalis, and C. parapsilosis) and Aspergillus niger. The results showed the effectiveness of the EOs compared to the aqueous, ethanolic, and decoction extracts against most of the microorganisms tested. In addition, the ethanolic extract showed antifungal activity that was distinguished from that of the other extracts. The antimicrobial efficacy of the essential oils under study can primarily be attributed to the synergistic interactions among its three principal constituents (E-anethole, estragole, and fenchone). Furthermore, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation results reveal significant interactions and stability between the selected bioactive compounds and different target proteins involved in antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Compounds like 3-hydroxyflavone, emmotin H, trans-caftaric acid, methyl rosmarinate, 1-caffeoyl-beta-D-glucose, and kaempferol exhibited better binding energies with the explored proteins, indicating their potential as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. Finally, our findings emphasize the significance of A. graveolens seeds as a promising reservoir of advantageous health compounds that can serve as organic substitutes for the presently employed synthetic preservatives. The escalating global challenge of antimicrobial resistance demands innovative approaches. This review delves into the current status and future prospects of bioengineered metallic nanoparticles derived from natural sources as potent antimicrobial agents. The unique attributes of metallic nanoparticles and the abundance of natural resources have sparked a burgeoning field of research in combating microbial infections. A systematic review of the literature was conducted, encompassing a wide range of studies investigating the synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial mechanisms of bioengineered metallic nanoparticles. Databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Springer, Taylor & Francis online and OpenAthen were extensively searched to compile a comprehensive overview of the topic. The synthesis methods, including green and sustainable approaches, were examined, as were the diverse biological sources used in nanoparticle fabrication. The amalgamation of metallic nanoparticles and natural products has yielded promising antimicrobial agents. Their multifaceted mechanisms, including membrane disruption, oxidative stress induction, and enzyme inhibition, render them effective against various pathogens, including drug-resistant strains. Moreover, the potential for targeted drug delivery systems using these nanoparticles has opened new avenues for personalized medicine. Bioengineered metallic nanoparticles derived from natural sources represent a dynamic frontier in the battle against microbial infections. The current status of research underscores their remarkable antimicrobial efficacy and multifaceted mechanisms of action. Future prospects are bright, with opportunities for scalability and cost-effectiveness through sustainable synthesis methods. Scorpion venom peptides are generally classified into two main groups: the disulfide bridged peptides (DBPs), which usually target membrane-associated ion channels, and the non-disulfide bridged peptides (NDBPs), a smaller group with multifunctional properties. In the past decade, these peptides have gained interest because most of them display functions that include antimicrobial, anticancer, haemolytic, and anti-inflammatory activities. Our current study focuses on the short (9–19 amino acids) antimicrobial linear scorpion peptides. Most of these peptides display a net positive charge of 1 or 2, an isoelectric point at pH 9–10, a broad range of hydrophobicity, and a Grand Average of Hydropathy (GRAVY) Value ranging between −0.05 and 1.7. These features allow these peptides to be attracted toward the negatively charged phospholipid head groups of the lipid membranes of target cells, a force driven by electrostatic interactions. This review outlines the antimicrobial potential of short-chained linear scorpion venom peptides. Additionally, short linear scorpion peptides are in general more attractive for large-scale synthesis from a manufacturing point of view. Background: The main issues faced during the treatment of apical periodontitis are the management of bacterial infection and the facilitation of the repair of alveolar bone defects to shorten disease duration. Conventional root canal irrigants are limited in their efficacy and are associated with several side effects. This study introduces a synergistic therapy based on nitric oxide (NO) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for the treatment of apical periodontitis. Results: This research developed a multifunctional nanoparticle, CGP, utilizing guanidinylated poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (ε-Caprolactone) polymer as a carrier, internally loaded with the photosensitizer chlorin e6. During root canal irrigation, the guanidino groups on the surface of CGP enabled effective biofilm penetration. These groups undergo oxidation by hydrogen peroxide in the aPDT process, triggering the release of NO without hindering the production of singlet oxygen. The generated NO significantly enhanced the antimicrobial capability and biofilm eradication efficacy of aPDT. Furthermore, CGP not only outperforms conventional aPDT in eradicating biofilms but also effectively promotes the repair of alveolar bone defects post-eradication. Importantly, our findings reveal that CGP exhibits significantly higher biosafety compared to sodium hypochlorite, alongside superior therapeutic efficacy in a rat model of apical periodontitis. The impact of two different concentrations (1500 and 2000 ppm) of olive leaf extract (OLE) on functional properties of anchovy oil (Engraulis encrasicolus) emulsified with sodium caseinate and maltodextrin and microencapsulated by spray drying method were investigated. OLE groups were compared with the control group that did not contain any antioxidant additives and the group containing BHT. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image showed that microcapsules varied in size but no more 27 µm and had wrinkled irregular cylindrical shape without cracks. Total phenol content of OLE was 98.55 mg GAE/g, whilst total antioxidant activity and DPPH radical scavenging capacity of OLE were found as 286.14 mg AA/g and 60.56%, respectively. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) identified a total of 40 compounds, the main ones being tyrosol (21.64%) and ethyl alpha.-d-glucopyranoside (11.77%) in OLE. Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis were the most resistant strains against microcapsules, although of the fish spoilage bacteria tested, Pseudomonas luteola was the most susceptible bacteria. The highest inhibition zone of microencapsulated fish oil was observed against P. luteola (18.38 mm). The BHT groups appeared generally inactive, whereas the OLE groups showed obvious bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect, with varying value of 6.25–25 mg/ml and 25–50 mg/ml, respectively. The study results revealed that the application of OLE notably increases the bioactivity of anchovy oil in microencapsulation, so combinations of fish oil and OLE microcapsules may be fairly strong antimicrobial agents in food, in addition to their nutraceutical properties. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged and spread globally. Recent studies have also reported the presence of antimicrobials in a wide variety of aquatic environments. Conducting a nationwide monitoring survey of AMR in the environment to elucidate its status and to assess its impact on ecosystems and human health is of social importance. In this study, we developed a novel high-throughput analysis (HTA) system based on a 96-well plate solid-phase extraction (SPE), using automated pipetting and an SPE pre-treatment system. The effectiveness of the system as an HTA for antimicrobials in environmental water was verified by comparing it with a conventional manual analytical system in a domestic hospital over a period of two years and four months. The results of the manual analysis and HTA using a combination of automated pipetting and SPE systems were generally consistent, and no statistically significant difference was observed (p > 0.05) between the two systems. The agreement ratios between the measured concentrations based on the conventional and HTA methods were positively correlated with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.99. These results indicate that HTA, which combines automated pipetting and an SPE pre-treatment system for rapid, high-volume analysis, can be used as an effective approach for understanding the environmental contamination of antimicrobials at multiple sites. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to present the accuracy and agreement between concentrations based on a manual analysis and those measured using HTA in hospital wastewater. These findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of antimicrobials in aquatic environments and assess the ecological and human health risks associated with antimicrobials and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to maintain the safety of aquatic environments. D-Cycloserine (DCS) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is currently FDA-approved to treat tuberculosis (TB) disease and urinary tract infection (UTI). Despite numerous reports showing good clinical efficacy, DCS fell out of favor as a UTI treatment because of its propensity to cause side effects. NRX-101, a fixed-dose combination of DCS and lurasidone, has been awarded Qualified Infectious Disease Product and Fast Track Designation by the FDA. In this study, we tested NRX-101 against the urinary tract pathogens Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii in cation-adjusted Mueller–Hinton broth (caMHB) and artificial urine media (AUM). Several strains were multidrug resistant. Test compounds were serially diluted in broth/media. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was defined as the lowest concentration of the test compound at which no bacterial growth was observed. DCS exhibited antibacterial efficacy against all strains tested while lurasidone did not appreciably affect the antibacterial action of DCS in vitro. In AUM, the MICs ranged from 128 to 512 mcg/mL for both DCS and NRX-101. In caMHB, MICs ranged from 8 to 1024 mcg/mL for NRX-101 and 32 to 512 mcg/mL for DCS alone. Our data confirm that DCS has antibacterial activity against reference and drug-resistant urinary pathogens. Furthermore, lurasidone does not interfere with DCS's antimicrobial action in vitro. The present study focused on the mushroom Ganoderma, which has been used in Eastern countries for centuries as a food and medicinal source. Specifically, the fruiting bodies of Ganoderma applanatum from the Kerala Forest Research Institute in Thirussur, Kerala, India, were analyzed for their nutritional and medicinal properties. The methanolic extracts of G. applanatum were used to examine secondary metabolites and proximate profiles, revealing the presence of various phytochemicals such as terpenoids, phenolics, glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins. Further analysis revealed the presence of significant amounts of calcium, sodium, phosphorus, and manganese. The compounds were characterized using chromatographic analysis, FTIR, and GC-MS, which revealed potential therapeutic compounds with C-H and C-O bonds in the amide group, β-glycosides, and C-C/C-O vibrations of phenolic substances. Mushroom extract at a concentration of 100 µg mL−1 exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against various pathogens. This study suggests that G. applanatum has a rich biochemical composition and pharmacological potential, making it a promising candidate for drug development and traditional medicine, and contributes valuable insights into its diverse therapeutic applications. Emerging cases of antimicrobial resistance in the treatment of microbial infections have really posed as a threat thus leading to the search of new drugs from natural sources. Endophytic fungi which live within plant's cells are microorganisms from which many novel metabolites with antimicrobial activity can be obtained. The aim of the study was to examine the antimicrobial activity and the phytoconstituents of the extract produced by the endophytic fungus from Annona muricata. From A. muricata leaves, the fungal endophyte was extracted and fermented. The endophytic extract produced was tested against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus mutants, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus niger, and Candida albicans. Following standard protocols, the extract was screened for phytochemicals and subjected to GC-MS analysis. With the exception of P. aeruginosa and A. niger, the results demonstrated that the extract has antimicrobial property with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 0.8 mg/ml to 1.0 mg/ml. Phytochemicals tested including phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, steroids, saponins and terpenes were present. Twenty (20) main compounds, mostly fatty acids, were detected by GC-MS and they may be the source of the extract's antimicrobial property. This is a comparative study to evaluate the effectiveness of six pomegranate peel extracts (PPEs) as antibacterial and antiproliferative agents. The Six PPEs were prepared using four solvent systems and each filtrate was concentrated to a gummy material to be used in the evaluation. The well‐diffusion method was used to evaluate their antimicrobial activity against bacteria typically associated with food spoilage: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and three Bacillus species. The 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐5‐(3‐carboxymethoxyphenyl)‐2‐(4‐sulfophenyl)‐2H‐tetrazolium (MTT) was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity against colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT116), prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3), ovarian cancer cells (SKOV‐3), and fibroblasts (MRC‐5). The antioxidant evaluation was done using the 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl‐hydrate (DPPH) assay. The pH of the water‐containing extracts was acidic and almost the same over 6 weeks. The six PPEs inhibited the bacterial growth in a comparable level to standard antibiotics. The effectiveness of each extract was dependent on the bacterial strain, and the Listeria showed a remarkable inhibition when exposed to the aqueous extract prepared at room temperature (RT). The aqueous (RT) and methanol PPEs had a significant antioxidant scavenging capability and a remarkable cytotoxic activity against the PC3 with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.1 μg/mL. The boiled aqueous extract exhibited antiproliferative activity against HCT116 with an IC50 of 21.45 μg/mL. The effect on SKOV‐3 and fibroblasts was insignificant. With the exception of butanol, the antioxidant screening shows an inverse correlation between the polarity of the extraction solvent and the IC50 exhibited by the PPEs. The variation in the effectiveness of PPEs is suggested to be due to variable soluble bioactive compounds that may interact differently with different cells, though water‐containing extracts are promising antibacterial agents. The findings clearly show that pomegranate peel possessed the potential to be an eco‐friendly novel source for natural compounds that can be implemented in the food industry as a natural antimicrobial and natural food additive to prevent foodborne illnesses. This study aims to determine the anti-QS activity of aspirin alone and in combination with chitosan to reach maximum inhibition. We tested ten virulent Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) isolates and screened for N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) production using Agrobacterium tumefaciens as a biosensor. P. aeruginosa isolates were treated with sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of aspirin and chitosan–aspirin. We used broth microdilution and checkerboard titration methods to determine the MICs and the synergistic effect of these two compounds, respectively. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to estimate the anti-QS activity of the aspirin–chitosan combination on the expression of lasI and rhlI genes. Results: Aspirin decreased the motility and production of AHLs, pyocyanin, and biofilm. Chitosan potentiated the inhibitory effect of aspirin. The chitosan–aspirin combination inhibited lasI and rhlI gene expression in PAO1 (ATCC 15692) by 7.12- and 0.92-fold, respectively. In clinical isolates, the expression of lasI and rhlI was decreased by 1.76 × 102- and 1.63 × 104-fold, respectively. Molecular docking analysis revealed that aspirin could fit into the active sites of the QS synthases lasI and rhlI with a high binding affinity, causing conformational changes that resulted in their inhibition. Purpose of Review: In 2019, a global meta-analysis demonstrated incidence of 3.9% for chorioamnionitis, 1.6% for endometritis, 1.2% for wound infection, 0.05% for sepsis, and 1.1% for maternal peripartum infection (Woodd et al. in PLOS Med 16(12):e1002984, 2019). Antimicrobial regimens for these infections are based on older microbiology profiles and may not account for changes in antimicrobial susceptibility data or the availability more modern antimicrobial therapies. Recent Findings: Recommendations for treatment of puerperal infection have not changed significantly in recent decades, despite the availability of new antimicrobial therapies with improved safety profiles. Summary: A consideration should be given to monotherapy or two-drug regimens that have fewer toxicities than older therapeutics and require less monitoring. With the current decreasing fossil resources and increasing carbon dioxide emissions, researchers are increasingly concerned about the development and utilization of biomass resources. The development of bio-based waterborne polyurethanes (BWPU) provides a new direction for the utilization of biomass resources and the protection of the environment. BWPU has attracted much attention from academia and industry due to their good physical and chemical properties, no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions, exploitation of renewable substances, and structural design-ability. BWPU typically includes the polymerization of bio-based monomers, such as animal and vegetable oils, the addition of bio-based nanofillers, such as cellulose, lignin, and chitosan, and antimicrobial modifications, such silver nanoparticles and carvacrol, which can effectively replace traditional petroleum-based resources. At present, there are few reviews on the synthesis and applications of BWPU. Therefore, this paper reviews the recent progress in the synthesis of BWPU, and focuses on its applications in coatings, adhesives and antimicrobials, which is expected to provide reference and summarize research priorities and issues. Introduction: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) produce various metabolites (i.e. metabiotics) with inhibitory capacity towards harmful foodborne pathogens. Methods: This study aimed to design several antimicrobial formulations based on metabiotics obtained from different native LAB species (Lactobacillus pentosus UTNGt5, Lactococcus lactis UTNGt28, and Weissella cibaria UTNGt21O) and to detect the possible mode of action towards two multidrug resistant Staphylococcus spp. strains isolated from avocado (Persea nubigena var. guatemalensis) fruits. Additionally, the formulation with the highest inhibitory activity was tested ex vitro on avocados at the immature (firm) ripeness stage to evaluate their effect on microorganisms' growth and fruit quality attributes post-harvest. Results and discussion: Out of the top five formulations showing the highest bactericidal effect in vitro at their minimum inhibitory concentration (1 x MIC) on both Staphylococcus spp. targets one candidate annotated P11 (consisting of UTNGt21O and UTNGt28; 1:3, v/v) was selected. Co-cultivation of Staphylococcus strains with P11 formulation results in cell viability reduction by 98%, by impairing the integrity of the cell membrane inducing cytoplasm molecule content leakage, protein profile changes, and finally bacterial death. Even though the total coliforms, Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacter spp., molds, and yeasts counts were not fully eliminated by day 13 of storage, a statistically significant reduction (p < 0.05) in viable cell counts were observed by day 8 upon the P11 treatment compared with non-treated control (C) and treated with a commercial disinfectant (T1) samples, suggesting that P11 formulation inhibited microbial colonization during storage. Likewise, no visible dark spots were observed on the mesocarp (pulp) upon the treatment with P11, whereas T1 and C fruits showed greater dark spots on the pulp as indicative of damage. The quality attributes, such as pH, total soluble solids, total titratable acidity, antioxidant capacity, and total polyphenol content, were not affected by the treatment. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) conducted on these five variables showed a clear separation of samples according to the maturity stage regardless of the treatment. Conclusion: These results suggest that the active metabolites from LAB strains might create a barrier between the exocarp and mesocarp, inhibiting the microorganisms colonization, reducing fruit damage, and lengthening the fruit quality and safety after harvest. We present a novel optical nanomotion-based rapid antibiotic and antifungal susceptibility test. The technique consisted of studying the effects of antibiotics or antifungals on the nanometric scale displacements of bacteria or yeasts to assess their sensitivity or resistance to drugs. The technique relies on a traditional optical microscope, a video camera, and custom-made image analysis software. It provides reliable results in a time frame of 2–4  h and can be applied to motile, non-motile, fast, and slowly growing microorganisms. Sea fennel is a halophytic plant rich in valuable nutritional components and is characterized by pleasant organoleptic properties. While its essential oils (EOs) are well investigated, there are no reports on the volatiles from their corresponding hydrolates, which are the main by-products of EO isolation, as well as on their biological activity. Therefore, the composition and biological activities of EOs and corresponding hydrolates of sea fennel from Atlantic (French, FRA) and Mediterranean (Croatian, CRO) ecotypes were investigated and compared. The EO from the CRO sample was characterized by an abundance of sabinene and limonene, while that from the FRA ecotype was rich in dillapiol and carvacryl methyl ether. The CRO hydrolate was rich in terpinen-4-ol and 10-(acetylmethyl)-3-carene, while dillapiol, thymyl methyl ether and γ-terpinene were the main compounds in the FRA sea fennel hydrolate. The biological activities of the EOs and hydrolates were evaluated for their antioxidant (with DPPH, NO, FRAP and ORAC bioassays), antimicrobial (against some Gram+ and Gram- spoilage bacteria) and antiageing (tyrosinase, elastase and collagenase inhibition) activities. Both EOs showed low reducing powers and antiradical activities while the ability of both hydrolates to quench NO was slightly higher (35–39% if inhibition). The FRA EO showed low activity against Staphylococcus aureus (8 mm), while CRO moderately inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa (8 mm), but strongly inhibited the other two bacterial strains. While the French EO showed no antityrosinase and anticollagenase activity, the Croatian oil significantly inhibited both enzymes (IC50 of 650 µg/mL and IC50 of 2570 µg/mL, respectively) probably due to the dominance of limonene and sabinene. Neither EO exhibited antielastase properties, while the hydrolates from both ecotypes showed no antiageing activity, regardless of the enzyme tested. The EOs from the aerial parts of sea fennel from FRA and CRO differed greatly in composition, resulting in different activities. Aim: Taxifolin (dihydroquercetin) is a natural bioactive flavonoid with antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, and is a valuable compound in the medical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. This study aims to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of pure taxifolin (99.25%) against pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms. Materials and Methods: The antibacterial and antifungal activities of taxifolin against two Gram-positive (E. aerogenes, S. aureus), three Gram-negative (P. aeruginosa, K. pneumonia and E. coli), and four yeast strains (C. krusei, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis and C. albicans) was determined using agar and broth microdilution methods. Results: The MIC value for tested Gram-positive bacteria is 1 mg/mL, which is 2 mg/ml for Gram-negative bacteria. At the same time, the MIC value was 8 mg/mL for all Candida species tested except C. glabrata (MIC: 4 mg/mL). Conclusion: In conclusion, it was determined that the antibacterial property of taxifolin was more pronounced than its antifungal properties. Taxifolin is a natural compound with high medical and pharmacological value. This study proved the effectiveness of pure taxifolin as a pharmacotherapeutic agent on pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms. Chitosan nanoparticle delivery systems have the potential for enhancing bone healing and addressing osteomyelitis. The objective was to deliver antimicrobial agents capable of preventing or treating osteomyelitis. Each formulation was optimized to achieve desired characteristics in terms of size (ranging from 100 to 400 nm), PDI (less than 0.5), zeta potential (typically negative), and in vitro release profiles for gentamicin. Entrapment percentages varied with gentamicin ranging from 10% to 65%. The chitosan nanoparticles exhibited substantial antimicrobial efficacy, particularly against P. aeruginosa and MRSA, with zones of inhibition ranging from 13 to 24 mm and a complete reduction in colony forming units observed between 3 and 24 h. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, leishmanicidal, and cytotoxic potential of metabolites produced by bacteria isolated from rhizosphere soil samples. The bacterium was identified by genome sequencing as Streptomyces kronopolitis. A preliminary screening was carried out for the antimicrobial activity of S. kronopolitis, demonstrating activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Corynebacterium diphtheriae ATCC 27010, C. diphtheriae ATCC 27012, and Mycobacterium abscessus, with inhibition halos of sizes 25, 36, 29, and 33 mm, respectively. To obtain secondary metabolites, the bacteria were subjected to submerged fermentation, and the metabolites were extracted using the liquid–liquid method with ethyl acetate. There was a similar MIC for M. abscessus and the two strains of C. diphtherium, reaching a concentration of 12.5 µg/mL, while that of S. aureus was 0.048 µg/mL. Assays for leishmanicidal activity and cytotoxicity against HEp-2 cells and red blood cells were performed. The metabolite showed an IC50 of 9.0 ± 0.9 µg/mL and CC50 of 221.2 ± 7.0 µg/mL. This metabolite does not have hemolytic activity and is more selective for parasites than for mammalian cells, with a selectivity index of 24.6. Studies on the bacteriocins of Bacillus species are increasing due to enhanced research interests and benefits for diverse applications ranging from bio-preservatives to probiotics, providing natural antimicrobial functions in fish farming and related aquaculture production needs. These benefits are due to their broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity and mode of action, their ability to secrete these important peptides in large amounts (g/L level) in a culture medium, and the ubiquitous nature of producing strains. It is well known that fish farming industries are challenged with pathogenic infection, indiscriminate antibiotic use, and now linked to antibiotic resistance of pathogens due to poor sewage disposals and persistence in nature. To overcome these challenges and the quest to stop the unregulated use of conventional antibiotics in fish farming industries has encouraged studies toward more eco-friendly options such as probiotics and associated bacteriocins with antimicrobial potential. Therefore, this review summarized and discussed recent studies on the effectiveness of Bacillus strains probiotic application in fish farming, emphasizing the importance of their proper characterization, extended field trials and the need for specifications in the selection criteria of the potential Bacillus probiotic strains of interest before further investigations, approvals and registrations. Simple Summary: Increasing the use of natural antimicrobials and introducing them into the poultry production cycle is desirable. Essential oils are promoted as one of the main alternatives to intensive conventional antibiotic therapy in poultry farming worldwide. Studies show that when applied in specific forms and concentrations, several essential oils or their components have demonstrated the ability to protect both humans and poultry from serious diseases, including those associated with microorganisms. For example, in theory and practice, salmonellosis is widely recognised as a significant concern for human and avian health. In this context, acquiring knowledge about essential oils that can potentially prevent or combat microbial outbreaks in poultry farming, leading to serious infectious complications for avian and human health, is crucial. This review aimed to compile information on the application of Citrus aurantifolia (CAEO), Ocimum basilicum (OBEO), and Allium sativum (ASEO) essential oils as antimicrobials in poultry farming. Poultry production is accompanied by the use of antimicrobial agents because no production step is free of microorganisms. In the absence of antimicrobial treatments with synthetic drugs, essential oils are among the most cited natural alternatives used to prevent and treat microbial contamination in poultry. Although there are several studies on the antimicrobial properties of essential oils, there is still no review that simultaneously compiles information on the leading antimicrobial role of essential oils from Citrus aurantifolia (CAEO), Ocimum basilicum (OBEO), and Allium sativum (ASEO) in poultry. Awareness of the antimicrobial role of these substances opens the door to encouraging their use in natural antimicrobial protocols and discouraging harmful synthetics in poultry. This review aimed to compile information on applying CAEO, OBEO, and ASEO as antimicrobials in poultry farming. Plant extracts are in the focus of the pharmaceutical industry as potential antimicrobials for oral care due to their high antimicrobial activity coupled with low production costs and safety for eukaryotic cells. Here, we show that the extract from Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) exhibits antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococci in both planktonic and biofilm-embedded forms. An extract was prepared by acetone extraction from hop infructescences, followed by purification and solubilization of the remaining fraction in ethanol. The effect of the extract on S. aureus (MSSA and MRSA) was comparable with the reference antibiotics (amikacin, ciprofloxacin, and ceftriaxone) and did not depend on the bacterial resistance to methicillin. The extract also demonstrated synergy with amikacin on six S. aureus clinical isolates, on four of six isolates with ciprofloxacin, and on three of six isolates with ceftriaxone. On various Streptococci, while demonstrating lower antimicrobial activity, an extract exhibited a considerable synergistic effect in combination with two of three of these antibiotics, decreasing their MIC up to 512-fold. Moreover, the extract was able to penetrate S. aureus and S. mutans biofilms, leading to almost complete bacterial death within them. The thin-layer chromatography and LC-MS of the extract revealed the presence of prenylated flavonoids (2′,4′,6′,4-tetrahydroxy-3′-geranylchalcone) and acylphloroglucides (cohumulone, colupulone, humulone, and lupulone), apparently responsible for the observed antimicrobial activity and ability to increase the efficiency of antibiotics. Taken together, these data suggest an extract from H. lupulus as a promising antimicrobial agent for use both as a solely antiseptic and to potentiate conventional antimicrobials. Background: The health and economic burden of antimicrobial resistance (in Australia is significant. Interventions that help guide and improve appropriate prescribing for acute respiratory tract infections in the community represent an opportunity to slow the spread of resistant bacteria. Clinicians who work in primary care are potentially the most influential health care professionals to address the problem of antimicrobial resistance, because this is where most antibiotics are prescribed. Methods: A cluster randomised trial was conducted comparing two parallel groups of 27 urban general practices in Queensland, Australia: 13 intervention and 14 control practices, with 56 and 54 general practitioners (GPs), respectively. This study evaluated an integrated, multifaceted evidence-based package of interventions implemented over a 6-month period. The evaluation included quantitative and qualitative components, and an economic analysis. Results: A multimodal package of interventions resulted in a reduction of 3.81 prescriptions per GP per month. This equates to 1280.16 prescriptions for the 56 GPs in the intervention practices over the 6-month period. The cost per prescription avoided was A$148. The qualitative feedback showed that the interventions were well received by the GPs and did not impact on consultation time. Providing GPs with a choice of tools might enhance their uptake and support for antimicrobial stewardship in the community. Conclusions: A multimodal package of interventions to enhance rational prescribing of antibiotics is effective, feasible and acceptable in general practice. Investment in antimicrobial stewardship strategies in primary care may ultimately provide the important returns for public health into the future. Background: Steam explosion pretreatment has been proven to be an effective treatment for breaking down the recalcitrant character of lignin–carbohydrate complexes (LCC) in lignocellulosic biomass. This study investigated the production of lignin-derived products from steam-exploded palm oil mill lignocellulosic biomass waste (POMLBW), that is, empty fruit bunches (EFB), kernel shells (KS), and kernel fibers (KF), also known as mesocarp fibers. Steam explosions cause lignin depolymerization, which forms various polyphenols. The low average molecular weight of the steam-exploded lignin-derived products and their antioxidant activities could potentially enhance their antimicrobial activities. Methods: POMLBW was steam-exploded with various degrees of severity factors (R0: 4.03, 4.91, 5.12, 5.35, and 5.65). Steam-exploded POMLBW produces lignin-derived products such as low-molecular-weight lignin (LML) and water-soluble lignin (WSL). Antioxidant activity was evaluated using 0.5 mM 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Polyphenol content was evaluated using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using an agar diffusion assay with Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and the thermal characteristics were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Results: WSL and LML resulted in high radical scavenging activity (RSA) of approximately 95% and 80%, with 0.25 g/L and 0.5 g/L of EC50, where the polyphenol amount was 242–448 mg/g (catechin eq.) and 20–117 mg/g (catechin eq.) under all LML and WSL conditions, respectively. The steam-exploded POMLBW had an average molecular weight of 1589–2832 Da, and this condition, including high RSA and polyphenol amounts, was responsible for the high antimicrobial activities of LML against both Gram-positive (Salmonella enterica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. Additionally, the thermal properties investigations revealed that the glass transition temperature was 80–90 °C (Tg), the melting temperature (Tm) was 338–362 °C, and the start temperature was 101–128 °C at the beginning of mass loss. Conclusions: These results show that the lignin-derived product from steam-exploded POMLBW has the potential for antioxidant (LML and WSL) and antimicrobial (LML) applications with good thermal resistance.
