Can artificial intelligence (AI) assist human employees in increasing employee creativity? Drawing on research on AI–human collaboration, job design, and employee creativity, we examine AI assistance in the form of a sequential division of labor within organizations: in a task, AI handles the initial portion, which is well-codified and repetitive, and employees focus on the subsequent portion, involving higher-level problem-solving. First, we provide causal evidence from a field experiment conducted at a telemarketing company. We find that AI assistance in generating sales leads, on average, increases employees' creativity in answering customers' questions during subsequent sales persuasion. Enhanced creativity leads to increased sales. However, this effect is much more pronounced for higher-skilled employees. Next, we conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with the employees. We found that AI assistance changes job design by intensifying employees' interactions with more serious customers. This change enables higher-skilled employees to generate innovative scripts and develop positive emotions at work, which are conducive to creativity. By contrast, with AI assistance, lower-skilled employees make limited improvements to scripts and experience negative emotions at work. We conclude that employees can achieve AI-augmented creativity, but this desirable outcome is skill-biased by favoring experts with greater job skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mechanical stretching is commonly used for mesogen alignment which is essential for the muscle-like actuations of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Despite the simplicity of the method, the mesogens are typically aligned in the stretching direction, limiting exclusively the LCE to an actuation mode of cooling-induced elongation. Here, we design an interpenetrating double network consisting of an LCE network and an elastomer network, with one polymerized network stretched before the polymerization of the other network. Depending on the polymerization sequence of the two networks, the double network shows two opposite actuation modes, namely, the conventional cooling-induced elongation or an unusual cooling-induced contraction. Strategic integration of the two opposite behaviors into the same LCE leads to sophisticated actuation difficult to achieve with a conventional LCE design. Coupled with 3D printing, geometrically complexed LCEs with diverse multimodal four-dimensional actuation behaviors are illustrated. A novel combined measurements techniques has been designed in this work, enabling the acquisition of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman spectral signals at the same point on a sample. The application of this combined technique to the analysis of multi-layered mock-up blocks painted with orpiment and realgar pigments has yielded significant insights. By correlating variations in the emission line intensity of characteristic elements within the LIBS spectra with depth-specific Raman spectra, the number of laser pulses that penetrated the pigment layers has been accurately determined, thereby establishing a method to measure layer thickness. In a context of increased competition due to growing customer centricity and product diversity, the automotive industry is challenged to improve the efficiency of its production processes. The design of the work system plays a decisive role in this. Virtual technologies are seen as having great potential to support this process. In this field study, the use of a user-centered Virtual Reality (VR) application for planning workshops was investigated. Over several weeks, the technology was used in the productive 3P workshop. The focus was on the acceptance of the professional groups, which is crucial for the successful integration of VR technology. To evaluate this, a questionnaire study based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), tasktechnology fit, and User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) was conducted with 83 participants. Results show that VR technology can be used to conduct 3P workshops and enable acceleration. Determinants of user acceptance are tasktechnology fit, user experience of the software and how well occupational groups are supported by the technology. Age and prior VR experience did not have a significant impact on user acceptance. Background: New therapeutics in oncology have presented challenges to existing paradigms and trial designs in all phases of drug development. As a motivating example, we considered an ongoing phase II trial planned to evaluate the combination of a MET inhibitor and an anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy to treat advanced oesogastric carcinoma. The objective of the paper was to exemplify the planning of an adaptive phase II trial with novel anti-cancer agents, including prolonged observation windows and joint sequential evaluation of efficacy and toxicity. Methods: We considered various candidate designs and computed decision rules assuming correlations between efficacy and toxicity. Simulations were conducted to evaluate the operating characteristics of all designs. Results: Design approaches allowing continuous accrual, such as the time-to-event Bayesian Optimal Phase II design (TOP), showed good operating characteristics while ensuring a reduced trial duration. All designs were sensitive to the specification of the correlation between efficacy and toxicity during planning, but TOP can take that correlation into account more easily. Conclusions: While specifying design working hypotheses requires caution, Bayesian approaches such as the TOP design had desirable operating characteristics and allowed incorporating concomittant information, such as toxicity data from concomitant observations in another relevant patient population (e.g., defined by mutational status). This research aims to determine the relationship between flexible working arrangements (FWAs) and employee performance (EP). The research was conducted by reviewing studies in Web of Science (WoS), EBSCO and Google Scholar databases between 2010 and 2024. The research was screened in the databases in line with the inclusion criteria, which were determined as studies written in English, where data were collected by survey technique, data were analyzed by correlation, and those that met the criteria were included in the research. As a result of the preliminary screening, second screening, and screening in line with the inclusion criteria, the remaining 21 studies constituted the data set of this study. The correlation between FWAs and EP was [r(20)  =  0.596, p  <  0.05]. This value can be interpreted a significant and high-level relationship between them. According to the random model, Fisher’s Z and 95% CI (LL  =  0.52 and UL  =  0.84), Z  =  8.45, measured an effect size of 0.35 p  =  0.000. This value shows a moderate effect size according to Cohen’s d. FWAs have a positive effect on EP, productivity, job satisfaction, job stress, work-family harmony, and organizational commitment. It is recommended that organizations, managers, organizational psychology, and human resources professionals (HRP) should include FWAs in job analysis, job design, and planning. The construction and maintenance of asphalt pavements is a resource-consuming sector, where the continuous rehabilitation of the superficial layers demands large volumes of non-renewable resources. The present work focuses on the design and characterization of asphalt mixtures for the binder layer of an asphalt pavement containing 50% reclaimed asphalt (RAP), in which seven different bio-based additives, identified as R1A, R1C, R2A, R2B, R2C, R3A, and R3B, were added to improve the workability, strength, and stiffness properties. The experimental program envisioned the hot mixing of aggregates and RAP with either a 50/70 or a 70/100 bitumen and, in turn, each of the seven bio-additives. The asphalt mixtures underwent the characterization of their densification properties; air voids; indirect tensile strength (ITS); indirect tensile stiffness modulus at 10, 20, 40, and 60 °C; and rutting resistance at 60 °C. The results highlighted that the performance in terms of workability and ITS of the resulting mixtures depends on the type of bio-additive and largely on the fresh bitumen type, while the stiffness at high temperature is not significantly affected by the presence of the bio-additives. A revolutionary concept of Multi-controller Software-Defined Networking (MC-SDN) is a promising structure for pursuing an evolving complex and expansive large-scale modern network environment. Despite the rich operational flexibility of MC-SDN, it is imperative to protect the network deployment against potential vulnerabilities that lead to misuse and malicious activities on data planes. The security holes in the MC-SDN significantly impact network survivability, and subsequently, the data plane is vulnerable to potential security threats and unintended consequences. Accordingly, this work intends to design a Federated learning-based Security (FedSec) strategy that detects the MC-SDN attack. The FedSec ensures packet routing services among the nodes by maintaining a flow table frequently updated according to the global model knowledge. By executing the FedSec algorithm only on the network-centric nodes selected based on importance measurements, the FedSec reduces the system complexity and enhances attack detection and classification accuracy. The growing attention paid to employee well-being in the healthcare system, along with the reinforcement of factors that drive change in the work environment, provides a strong foundation for studying the relationship between work design and its related outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the elements of work design and the overall well-being of healthcare professionals, particularly the differences across multiple groups of various genders and age brackets. A cross-sectional study design was employed, and a convenience sampling method was used. The study participants were healthcare professionals, and a total of 427 valid surveys were collected. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was deployed to test the relationship between the determinants of work design and the perceived well-being of healthcare professionals. The results indicate a strong positive relationship between the social characteristics of work and overall well-being, as well as a positive contribution of the work context to the perceived well-being of healthcare professionals. The findings validated that knowledge characteristics had no beneficial impacts on overall well-being; nor did the task characteristics of work design. Although the mentioned associations failed to demonstrate statistical significance, the results nonetheless have significant practical consequences that are comparable to those of the relationships that demonstrated statistical significance. Introduction: This study analyzes the existing academic literature to identify the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on human resource (HR) activities, highlighting both opportunities and associated challenges, and on the roles of employees, line managers, and HR professionals, collectively referred to as the HR triad. Methods: We employed the scoping review method to capture and synthesize relevant academic literature in the AI-human resource management (HRM) field, examining 27 years of research (43 peer-reviewed articles are included). Results: Based on the results, we propose an integrative framework that outlines the five primary effects of AI on HR activities: task automation, optimized HR data use, augmentation of human capabilities, work context redesign, and transformation of the social and relational aspects of work. We also detail the opportunities and challenges associated with each of these effects and the changes in the roles of the HR triad. Discussion: This research contributes to the ongoing debate on AI-augmented HRM by discussing the theoretical contributions and managerial implications of our findings, along with avenues for future research. By considering the most recent studies on the topic, this scoping review sheds light on the effects of AI on the roles of the HR triad, enabling these key stakeholders to better prepare for this technological change. The findings can inform future academic research, organizations using or considering the application of AI in HRM, and policymakers. This work proposes the design of a commutation function to solve the output voltage trajectory tracking problem in the DC-DC Buck power electronic converter. Through a Lyapunov-type analysis, sufficient conditions are established, taking into account the discontinuous model, to ensure asymptotic convergence to the desired trajectories. Based on this analysis, a state-dependent switching function was designed to guarantee the closed-loop stability of the tracking error. To validate the control performance, circuit numerical simulations were carried out under abrupt disturbances in the source and load of the converter. Objectives: The main objective of this work is to design an efficient numerical scheme is proposed for solving singularly perturbed time delayed parabolic problems with two parameters. Results: The scheme is constructed via the implicit Euler and non-standard finite difference method to approximate the time and space derivatives, respectively. Besides, to enhance the accuracy and order of convergence of the method Richardson extrapolation technique is employed. Intensive numerical experimentation has been done on some model examples. Further, the layer behavior of the solutions is presented using graphs and observed to agree with the existing theories. Background: Job crafting is defined as a series of proactive behaviors exhibited by employees in order to balance work resources and needs, which has a significant positive impact on the nurses. It is necessary to find the core factors that influence the job crafting, as emergency nurses deal with the most complex tasks, so as to improve their job satisfaction. Objectives: To investigate the core factors of job crafting among emergency nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used in the study. A total of 255 nurses were recruited from two hospitals in Zhengzhou and Shenzhen, China in December 2021. 255 nurses completed an online questionnaire. Hierarchical regression models and fsQCA models were used to explore the factors influencing job crafting among emergency nurses and helped us to identify core factors. Results: The hierarchical regression model and the fsQCA model found that the occupational benefit, psychological empowerment, and research experience were the core factors affecting their job crafting. Job involvement was not significant in the regression model, but the QCA model indicated that it needs to be combined with other factors to impact on job crafting. The QCA model uncovered seven key conditional configurations that led to high and low job crafting among emergency nurses, explaining 80.0% of the results for high job crafting and 82.6% of the results for the low job crafting, respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study provide valuable insights into the job crafting experienced by emergency nurses. Junior emergency nurses should be granted a high level of psychological empowerment without assigning them overly complex tasks, such as research tasks, as these challenges can stop their job crafting. Intermediate and senior emergency nurses, on the other hand, can be assigned research tasks coupled with high psychological empowerment to enhance their job crafting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the software development process, numerous bugs are reported daily in the software bug repositories. Bug triage assigned these bugs to the most relevant and expert developer for resolution. Moreover, assigning bugs to an incompetent or an over‐engaged developer causes repeated reassignment to other developers until it is resolved. This problem can be solved by devising a triage process that assigns bugs to not only expert developers but also to those who are either under‐engaged or reasonably engaged but are not over‐engaged in work. This paper has designed and implemented work engagement sensitive bug triage that resolves the issue of assigning bugs to developers considering their due work engagement, expertise as well as the current state of activity. For this purpose, a developer profile is built by using metrics to generate three types of scores: technical skill, work engagement and work experience. Metadata features like developer‐name, email, developer‐work‐experience in bug resolution, last and present‐work‐activity, timestamp, component and priority are used for it. A multi‐criteria‐based Henry–Garret technique is used to generate a single ranked list of developers from three ranked lists. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated on four large OOS projects: Mozilla, Eclipse, Netbeans, and Open Office covering 895,439 bug reports accumulated for 33 years of development. The overall system accuracy of the proposed triage using all four datasets is 91.96 ± 0.05% which is 5.87% better than previously published work. The proposed method is achieved up to 90.30 ± 0.05 and 97.1 ± 0.05 MRR and accuracy of reassignment respectively that indicates how significantly it re‐assigns the bug to the relevant developers. Adapting to the growing demand for personalized, small-batch manufacturing, this study explores the development of additively manufactured molds for electroforming personalized metal parts. The approach integrates novel multi-level mold design and fabrication techniques, along with the experimental procedures for the electroforming process. This work outlines design considerations and guidelines for effective electroforming in additively manufactured molds, successfully demonstrating the production of composite metal components with multi-level and free-form geometries. By emphasizing cost efficiency and part quality, particularly for limited-thickness metal components, the developed technique offers distinct advantages over existing metal additive manufacturing methods. This approach establishes itself as a flexible and durable method for metal additive manufacturing, expanding the scope of electroforming beyond traditional constraints such as thin-walled hollow structures, 2D components, and nanoscale applications. Photochromic polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers were prepared through electrospinning. Various factors, including the solvent system, the concentration of PCL, the viscosity of the solution, and the electrical conductivity, influence the morphology of PCL nanofibers. A binary solvent system can dissolve PCL, control fiber structure and morphology, and allow solvent evaporation. The photochromic properties of electrospun membranes based on PCL and diethienylethene (DTE) were assessed using the CM-3610a spectrophotometer. The study showed that incorporating DTE into the membrane enables photochromic performance, with the photochromic reaction being reversible. The analysis of the color-change kinetics showed that the mechanism of photo cycling during colorization was linked to the amplitude of the fast and slow mechanisms, which depended on the formulation tested. The study showed that the photoreversion of the membrane under visible illumination occurs according to first-order kinetics. This work presented the design and manufacturing of photochromic membranes through electrospinning, which offers rapid color change rates, adjustable color fade times, superior reversibility, and reproducibility over at least 10 cycles. The thermochromic properties are proportional to the DTE concentration used, making it possible to obtain color variations with a delta E of 13 and 38 for concentrations ranging from 0.95 to 11.4 wt.%. Intelligent assistance systems (IAS) are designed to counteract rising cognitive demands caused by increasingly individualized manufacturing processes in assembly. How IAS affect work characteristics which are crucial for promoting work motivation of employees is yet unclear. Based on the cyber-physical systems transformation framework, the model of routine-biased technological change, and a comprehensive model of work design, we expected in- and decreases in motivational work characteristics (MWC) when working with IAS. Furthermore, we posited a buffering effect of the option of voluntary use on decreasing knowledge characteristics. Applying an online case study with experimental vignette methodology (EVM) allowed us to identify effects of the IAS on MWC before it is widely implemented. 203 German and British blue-collar workers evaluated an assembly workplace according to three experimental conditions (work without IAS, work with IAS, work with voluntary use of IAS). We identified enhanced feedback from the job and information processing in work with IAS in contrast to a traditional assembly workplace but found no restrictions (or elevations) in terms of other task (i.e., autonomy) or knowledge characteristics (i.e., job complexity, problem solving, specialization, skill variety). Thus, our results indicate that the IAS improves some motivational work characteristics of the assembly workplace, although it misses the primary goal of cognitive relief. Our study highlights the need for work design theories that specify the effect of IAS on motivational work characteristics and the potential benefit of IAS in assembly of the future. Recent decades have witnessed the increasing usage of deep cement mixing (DCM) mixers in the field of marine infrastructure construction. The mixing performance, including the torque history, can be helpful for structural safety evaluation, design, and the optimization of agitators, which is of engineering significance. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, there are no related publications that have reported the mixing behaviors of deep cement mixing agitators. In light of this, the present work conducts experimental and numerical investigations of the mixing behaviors of a DCM ship mixing agitator. To achieve this end, a model test device is established, and mixing experiments using two- and three-blade mixers are respectively conducted. Silt and clay soils are considered in the experiments with a three-blade mixer, while clay soils are used for those with a two-blade mixer. In addition, this work designs a torque transducer placed inside the rotating rod to accurately measure the torque history of the agitator during model test experiments. The experimental results show that, when mixing clay using agitators with different blades, the average torque value required for a two-blade agitator is slightly larger than that for a three-blade one. This study also presents a computational framework based on the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method for an efficient and accurate modeling of the soil-mixing behaviors of the agitator. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data from model tests in terms of torque history, which demonstrates the effectiveness and capacity of our presented computational framework. The numerical results show that the average torque value is smaller at a higher rotational speed during the mixing of clay using a two-bladed agitator, but the effect of rotational speed on the torque history is small. Emerging digital and smart technologies, including wearable and collaborative ones, related to the Industry 4.0 paradigm are playing an assisting, collaborative, and augmenting role for the Operator 4.0, and just as in previous industrial revolutions, the nature of work and the workplace for operators on the shop floor is changing. This literature review aims to look into the impact of digital and smart technologies adoption on the workers’ psychosocial stage under the light of the Operator 4.0 typology. Based on the review conducted, a theoretical framework for assessing the psychosocial impacts (risks) of Industry 4.0 technologies adoption in Operator 4.0 is proposed. The framework can be utilized by company managers, researchers, production engineers, and human resources personnel for carrying out a psychosocial risk assessment of Operator 4.0 in assembly, maintenance, and training operations as these operations get digitally transformed and smartified based on self-report questionnaires. Findings reveal that the nature of work, the social and organizational environment of work, and related individual factors are key categories that might affect the Operator 4.0 psychosocial stage on the shop floor.

Experienced passage of time, the extent to which employees perceive the passage of work time as being fast or slow, is a fundamental aspect of work experience. We identify two novel temporal work design characteristics that can speed up employees' experienced passage of time: temporal predictability and task segmentation. Jobs with high temporal predictability do not make employees go through uncertain wait times before embarking on their next task. High task segmentation occurs when a large chunk of work time is segmented by categorically different temporal markers. We tested a model in which temporal predictability and task segmentation affect experienced passage of time, which in turn influences job performance, with five studies: two experiments that established the internal validity of temporal predictability and task segmentation (Studies 1a and 1b), a naturalistic field study in a factory that investigated the natural consequences of distinct temporal work design (Study 2), an organizational field study that constructively replicated the model using a sample of knowledge workers and their supervisors (Study 3), and an online survey in which we connected our model with the broader work design literature (Study 4). Introduction: Based on Social Identity Theory, this study hypothesized the parallel mediating roles of organizational commitment, and commitment to beneficiaries, in the relationship between relational job design and future volunteer intentions among episodic volunteers at a mega sport event. Perceived organizational support was tested as a moderator of this relationship. Methods: Participants were 617 episodic volunteers (35.7% male and 64.3% female) at the 7th CISM Military World Games in Wuhan, China, who completed online questionnaires. Results: Regression-based analyses indicated that relational job design positively predicted future volunteer intentions through organizational commitment. Although the results did not indicate a mediating role of commitment to beneficiaries, relational job design was still shown to positively predict commitment to beneficiaries. Furthermore, the association between relational job design and commitment to beneficiaries was moderated by perceived organizational support, such the effect was stronger when perceived organizational support was high. Discussion: The results have practical implications for strengthening episodic volunteers' intentions to participate in future mega sport events, creating a legacy of volunteerism. Staggered-level designs have been introduced in the literature as cost-efficient and statistically efficient alternatives to split-plot and split-split-plot designs for experiments with multiple hard-to-change factors. In this article, we present an application of a staggered-level design to a staple fiber cutting process at Eastman. The experiment was run in blocks and involved one quantitative hard-to-change factor, one two-level categorical hard-to-change factor, and three quantitative easy-to-change factors. We review existing work on staggered-level designs, discuss D-, A- and I-optimal staggered-level designs and blocked staggered-level designs, and perform an analysis of the data from the staple fiber cutting experiment. In adapting to the demands of this modernized landscape, a conventional human-operated forklift within an industrial or warehouse setting falls short. However, the adoption of autonomous forklifts remains a distant prospect for many companies, primarily due to the formidable implementation and switching costs associated with artificial intelligence and complex control mechanisms. To bridge this gap, we present the development of a teleoperated forklift utilizing mecanum wheels for enhanced maneuverability. A key contribution of this work lies in the design of a novel synchronization method for the precise position control of the pallet carriers. This method surpasses the conventional independent and master–slave approaches, demonstrably achieving superior tracking and synchronization performance. Also, a model-based velocity control algorithm was designed for the mecanum wheels to facilitate the mobility of the system. The forklift was successfully able to carry a maximum load of 300 kg. For the comparison of the tracking and synchronization performance, the independent and master–slave methods were also applied to the system. After COVID-19, the dynamics of home office development slowed down. According to the experiences of major companies, the problem is "fluctuating". Research from the pandemic era covers various aspects and fails to present the concept of synthetic developmental conditions. Therefore, the issue of extending the organisation to home spaces was undertaken, identifying the determinants of the sustainable development of workplaces and organisations. The key is to create sustainable work systems, i.e., adapted to the environment, while being creative, critical, and productive. This study aims to establish the cultural determinants of home office development based on empirical research from the perspective of neo-institutionalism. For this purpose, the institutional logics were subject to operationalisation and the co-dependencies of metalogics with the types of organisational cultures assumed in the Cameron–Quinn OCAI model were established. The information was collected in a CAWI survey. The presented research procedure constitutes a methodical innovation. The results demonstrate a trend of changes in the dominating types of organisational culture from market control to cooperation and creation with a stimulating role of professional logics (occupation, organisation) from the perspective of working from home which brings sustainable management and business models. There is a subtle role of home logic and low employee readiness level. The adapted cultural approach demonstrates that increasing effectiveness of home office solutions requires development of integrated practices, which consider this type of work as separate and specialised. The past corporate failures and spontaneous methods cannot serve as grounds for strategies (long-term solutions). Despite their complex design, cycloidal gearboxes are characterized by high efficiency. Nevertheless, due to friction, some power is lost during gearbox operation. Basically, these losses occur in two structural nodes: the cycloid gearing and the output mechanism. Since the first of these nodes has been well discussed in the literature, the output mechanism will be discussed in this article. The design of the output mechanism has a significant impact on mechanical power losses. There are several mechanism design solutions. One of them is a mechanism with serially arranged rollers. Three solutions that are different in design but work identically will be discussed. Due to this affinity, a single, common mathematical model will be used to determine the value of losses. As will be shown, the value of losses is directly affected by the backlash, number, and diameter of the rollers used in the output mechanism and indirectly by the ratio and eccentricity of the cycloidal gearbox. Sample calculations were carried out using the developed model of mechanical power losses in the output mechanism. This made it possible to analyze the distribution of backlash created by manufacturing tolerances. It was also shown that the backlash has a significant effect on the number of rollers involved in torque transmission, as well as on the distribution of loads, contact pressures, and mechanical power losses. Peer feedback literacy is becoming increasingly important in higher education as peer feedback has substantially grown as a pedagogical approach. However, quality of produced feedback, a key behavioral aspect of peer feedback literacy, lacks a systematic and evidence-based conceptualization to guide research, instruction, and system design. We introduce a novel framework involving six conceptual dimensions of peer feedback quality that can be measured and supported in online peer feedback contexts: reviewing process, rating accuracy, feedback amount, perceived comment quality, actual comment quality, and feedback content. We then test the underlying dimensionality of student competencies through correlational analysis, Multidimensional Scaling, and cluster analysis, using data from 844 students engaged in online peer feedback in a university-level course. The separability of the conceptual dimensions is largely supported in the cluster analysis. However, the cluster analysis also suggests restructuring perceived and actual comment quality in terms of initial impact and ultimate impact. The Multi-Dimensional Scaling suggests the dimensions of peer feedback can be conceptualized in terms of relative emphasis on expertise vs. effort and on overall review quality vs. individual comment quality. The paper presents the construction and technological aspects of a device for pitting fruit, especially cherries, on an industrial scale. The presented work includes design solutions related to the transport of pits removed from pitted fruit, as well as a gravity chute, with an indication of potential operational problems related to the machine design. The authors proposed the use of a screw conveyor, especially in the case of longer drums, to optimize the process. Some analyses are also presented, including friction occurring during the transport of pits. Ultimately, a specific design concept is presented that integrates the screw conveyor with the pitting drum. The presented conclusions point to practical technological and engineering aspects related to fruit processing, suggesting the potential for innovative solutions in the design of pitters. The South African government is moving toward universal health coverage (UHC) with the passing of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill. Access to quality primary healthcare (PHC) is the cornerstone of UHC principles. The South African governmental health department have begun focusing efforts on improving the efficiency and functionality of this system; that includes the involvement of private healthcare professionals and medical insurance companies. This study sought to explore perceptions of medical insurance company personnel on PHC re-engineering as part of NHI restructuring. A qualitative research design was adopted in this study. Semi-structured interviewed were conducted on 10 participants. Their responses were audio recorded and transcribed utilizing Microsoft Word® documents. Nvivo® was used to facilitate the analysis of data. A thematical approach was used to categories codes into themes. Although participants were in agreement with the current healthcare reform in South Africa. The findings of this study have highlighted several gaps in the NHI Bill at the current point in time. In order to achieve standardized quality of care at a primary level; it is imperative that reimbursement frameworks with clearly detailed service provision and accountability guidelines are developed. As work is shifting and changing, we, CSCW researchers, must consider our role in creating work futures, and what experiences we want to produce through technology design. What qualities are important to consider about the human experience when designing work technologies for the future? Exploring the potentials of artistic practices for epistemological inquiry, we demonstrate Research through Art as a novel futuring approach for CSCW research, leveraging the power of artistic practice for exploring questions of human experience. We engaged with young artists who created art pieces that manifested their hopes, intuitions, and anxieties on the future of work. Our analytical inquiry of these artistic practices allowed us to explore what different futures might be imaginable and what might these futures feel like. We find that futuring entails engaging with ambiguities, which can be a productive resource for design. We identified the ambiguities of time, purpose, body, identity, and agency as foundational for the imaginaries produced by the artists. By intersecting the ambiguities, we can begin to systematically frame novel design questions for CSCW technologies of the future by conceptualizing these ambiguities as multifinalities – single points from which many possibilities emerge. Photonic crystals are periodic dielectric structures that possess a wealth of physical characteristics. Owing to the unique way they interact with the light, they provide new degrees of freedom to precisely modulate the electromagnetic fields, and have received extensive research in both academia and industry. At the same time, fueled by the advances in computer science, inverse design strategies are gradually being used to efficiently produce on-demand devices in various domains. As a result, the interdisciplinary area combining photonic crystals and inverse design emerges and flourishes. Here, we review the recent progress for the application of inverse design in photonic crystals. We start with a brief introduction of the background, then mainly discuss the optimizations of various physical properties of photonic crystals, from eigenproperties to response-based properties, and end up with an outlook for the future directions. Under light load conditions, the phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter often has difficulty in realizing the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of the lagging-leg by relying on the energy of its resonant inductor; however, for the series-parallel PSFB converter applied in high-power applications, the lagging-leg still has the problem of difficult realization of ZVS. Based on this, the paper analyzes the reasons why the series-parallel PSFB converter has difficulty in achieving ZVS for the lagging-leg under light and heavy loads. Under interleaved control, the ZVS of the lagging-leg over the full load range is realized by adding an auxiliary LC branch at the midpoint of the lagging-leg of both submodules. Based on the double-bridge input-parallel-output-series (IPOS) PSFB converter, analyzing the working principle of the circuit after adding the auxiliary LC branch and extending it to the series-parallel PSFB converter. The design requirements of the LC auxiliary branch of the dual-bridge series-parallel PSFB converter are given and the effects of the LC auxiliary branch on the module operating state and device stress are analyzed. On this basis, an extension is carried out to give the working principle and design method of the auxiliary LC branch of the N-bridge series-parallel PSFB converter. Finally, a 100 kW Matlab/Simulink simulation model verifies the superior performance of the proposed LC auxiliary branch to realize the lagging-leg ZVS of the series-parallel PSFB converter under light and heavy loads and achieves a 1.09% peak efficiency improvement at rated load. Human–robot collaboration stands as one of the research frontiers in industrial applications due to the possibility for human operators to be supported by robots in carrying out their tasks in a shared workspace. However, advances in this field can be slowed down by the lack of standards regarding the safety and ergonomics of such applications. This article aims at reducing this gap by presenting an adaptation of the standard ISO 11228-3 for the ergonomic evaluation of hand-guiding applications through the OCRA index. This innovative methodology is innovatively applied to a drilling application in which a human operator hand-guides a collaborative robotic system consisting of a Franka Emika Panda robot, a force/torque sensor and an IMU suit to track the motion of the operator's body. The SaRAH app, a MATLAB 2020a-based software tool developed on purpose, implements the ergonomic assessment procedure, allowing the proper redesign of the working shift (offline mode) or providing the worker suggestions to improve his/her behavior (online mode) so as to reduce the ergonomic risk. To facilitate the integration of a fragrance encapsulation system into different products to achieve effective releases, a dual-responsive release system with pH and thermal trigger control is designed in this work. A series of ZIF-8 (M) and bilayer ZIF-8-on-ZIF-8 (MM) materials are synthesized by a solvent method at room temperature. The fragrance is encapsulated into the ZIFs by dynamic adsorption or in situ encapsulation combined dynamic adsorption. The fragrance loading contributed by dynamic adsorption was as high as 80%. The fragrance loaded in the double-layer MM host was almost twice that of the monolayer host M due to the stronger electrostatic interaction between MM and vanillin. In the pH and thermal trigger response release experiments, the second MOF layer in the MM host, as a controlled entity, greatly improved the load and kinetic equilibrium time of vanillin, and realized the controlled release of guest molecules. One central goal of bioprocess engineering is to maximize the production of specific chemicals using microbial cell factories. Many bioprocesses are one-stage (batch) processes (OSPs), in which growth and product synthesis are coupled. However, OSPs often exhibit low volumetric productivities due to the competition for substrate for biomass and product synthesis implying trade-offs between biomass and product yields. Two-stage or, more generally, multi-stage processes (MSPs) offer the potential to tackle this trade-off for improved efficiency of bioprocesses, for example, by separating growth and production. MSPs have recently gained much attention, also because of a rapidly growing toolbox for the dynamic control of metabolic fluxes. Despite these promising advancements, computational tools specifically tailored for the optimal design of MSPs in the field of biotechnology are still lacking. Here, we present OptMSP, a new Python-based toolbox for identifying optimal MSPs maximizing a user-defined process metrics (such as volumetric productivity, yield, and titer or combinations thereof) under given constraints. In contrast to other methods, our framework starts with a set of well-defined modules representing relevant stages or sub-processes. Experimentally determined parameters (such as growth rates, substrate uptake and product formation rates) are used to build suitable ODE models describing the dynamic behavior of each module. OptMSP finds then the optimal combination of those modules, which, together with the optimal switching time points, maximize a given objective function. Background: India is going through the maintenance phase of VL elimination programme which may be threatened by the persistence of hidden parasite pools among asymptomatic leishmanial infection (ALI) and PKDL. The present work was designed to determine the burden of VL, PKDL, and ALI and to assess the role of treatment of ALI in maintaining post-elimination phase. Methods and finding: The study was undertaken in Malda district, West Bengal, India during October 2016 to September 2021. Study areas were divided into 'Study' and 'Control' arms. VL and PKDL cases of both the arms were diagnosed by three active mass surveys with an interval of one year and treated as per National guideline. ALI of study arm was treated like VL. ALI of control arm was followed up to determine their fate. Fed sand-fly pools were analysed for parasitic DNA. No significant difference was noted between the incidence of VL and PKDL in both the arms. Incidence of ALI declined sharply in study arm but an increasing trend was observed in control arm. Significantly higher rate of sero-conversion was noted in control arm and was found to be associated with untreated ALI burden. Parasitic DNA was detected in 22.8% ALI cases and 2.2% sand-fly pools. Conclusion: Persistence of a significant number of PKDL and ALI and ongoing transmission, as evidenced by new infection and detection of leishmanial DNA in vector sand-flies, may threaten the maintenance of post-elimination phase. Emphasis should be given for elimination of pathogen to prevent resurgence of VL epidemics. In the study arm, diagnosed ALI cases were treated with Liposomal Amphotericin B. No significant difference was noted between the incidence of VL and PKDL cases in 'Study' and 'Control' arm. But the incidence of ALI cases declined sharply in 'Study' arm and increasing trend was observed in 'Control' arm. A significantly higher rate of ser-conversion was noted in 'Control' arm. In both 'Study' and 'Control' arm, the sero-conversion rate was significantly associated with untreated ALI burden. Persistence of significant number of PKDL and ALI and ongoing transmission as evidenced by new infection and detection of leishmanial DNA in sand-flies may jeopardise the maintenance of post-elimination phase. Therefore, constant vigilance is highly needed to prevent resurgence of VL epidemic. Detection and long-term follow-up of ALI may also help to sustain the elimination. In this paper, the proposed work is to design an emergency vehicle (rescue vehicle) equipped with sensors and an Arduino board as an edge device to gather information on approaching vehicle speed and blind spots. To quickly identify potential dangers, the data is transferred to a fog computing device for real-time processing and analysis. The Arduino is used for blind spot identification and proximity monitoring, and the Node MCU is used for real-time data processing, communication, and remote monitoring. This technology improves safety by averting collisions with nearby objects, pedestrians, and bicycles in emergency situations by immediately alerting the emergency vehicle driver. Group projects are part of the core educational experience in higher education, but many students report bad experiences with them, characterized by negative emotions and group problems. Group problems may undermine learning and cause stress and frustration. This may be prevented by monitoring and supporting groups, but this is often not feasible for teachers, who lack time and resources. This research aims to find a method for early identification of group work problems via computer-supported assessment. First, interviews and focus groups provided insights into the most common group problems and which visual features students preferred in a peer assessment. Next, two assessment versions were created: a simple, time-efficient version, and a more engaging, interactive one. We also created an initial version of E-Mate, a virtual agent that provides feedback on the assessment. These were tested in a field study. Most students reported a positive experience with the peer assessment, regardless of the version used. Teachers were also positive about its usefulness. Based on the feedback received, new features were added to the peer assessment survey and the E-Mate was redesigned; this new version was tested in a second field study. The results are in line with the previous field study and confirm the positive reception and usefulness of the survey, supporting the use of five attributes to evaluate group collaboration and the usage of a peer assessment survey to assess group work. The aim of this work was to design a kirigami-based metamaterial with optical properties. This idea came from the necessity of a study that can improve common camouflage techniques to yield a product that is cheap, light, and easy to manufacture and assemble. The author investigated the possibility of exploiting a rotation to achieve transparency and color changing. One of the most important examples of a kirigami structure is a geometry based on rotating squares, which is a one-degree-of-freedom mechanism. In this study, light polarization and birefringence were exploited to obtain transparency and color-changing properties using two polarizers and common cellophane tape. These elements were assembled with a rotating-square structure that allowed the rotation of a polarizer placed on the structure with respect to a fixed polarizer equipped with cellophane layers. This study investigated the relationships between human resource (HR) practices, employee psychological empowerment, employee innovative work behavior, and firm innovation capability in the context of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Jordan. Employing the Social Exchange Theory (SET) as a guiding framework, this study explored how employee psychological empowerment and innovative work behavior mediated the influence of HR practices on a firm's innovative capabilities. Drawing on extensive data collected from ICT organizations in Jordan, our analysis had several key findings. A significant positive correlation between HR practices and psychological empowerment was observed. Job design emerged as the most influential factor affecting psychological empowerment, whereas compensation had a weaker impact. Furthermore, we established that psychological empowerment significantly enhanced innovative work behavior, underscoring its role as a catalyst for innovative work behavior within the sector. Finally, our study supported the theory that psychological empowerment influenced a firms' innovation capabilities, emphasizing the pivotal role of employee empowerment in driving firm-level innovation in the Jordanian ICT sector. These findings provide insights for academic and practical audiences, clarifying how HR practices, employee psychological empowerment, and innovative work behavior collectively influenced firm innovation capability within the unique context of the Jordanian ICT sector. Job crafting refers to the self‐initiated work behaviours employees use to change their job characteristics. According to job design theory, these crafting‐induced changes in job characteristics should impact employee outcomes. Job characteristics can therefore be proposed as a key mechanism through which job crafting affects employee outcomes and we present cross‐sectional meta‐analytic structural equation modelling of this key mechanism (K = 58 independent samples, N = 20,347 employees). Results show significant indirect effects between task resource crafting and employee outcomes (well‐being and positive job attitudes) via task resources, and significant indirect effects between social job crafting and employee outcomes (well‐being and positive job attitudes) via social resources. Results also indicated that challenge and hindrance demand crafting increase job strain via increases in job demand. Overall, our findings indicate that job characteristics are an important job crafting mechanism, that employees may have difficulty in crafting job demands in ways that produce beneficial outcomes, and that future research needs to consider simultaneously the range of mechanisms through which job crafting affects outcomes. Every year in the construction process new technologies are introduced, the use of new building materials increases, a large number of contractors are involved, with a significant increase in the scale of construction and the need to ensure the reliability of construction. There arises a necessity to forecast and correct activities of construction organizations, to give adequate assessments of the adopted organizational and technological solutions (OTS), which, as a rule, leads to a decrease in the prescriptive term of construction. Monolithic structure construction process design is closely connected with the necessity of clear and correct choice of the necessary organizationaltechnological solutions. Depending on the made decisions it is possible to estimate the reliability of monolithic works. This in its turn gives the possibility to forecast the terms of production, the cost of monolithic works on the stage of design of dwelling buildings and industrial objects directly. The article offers a methodology for calculating the evaluation of organizational and technical reliability of the process of monolithic structures. For the successful performance of monolithic works it is necessary to ensure the reliable functioning of all participants of the process from designers to construction teams. The article presents the calculation of organizational and technological reliability index (OTR) of monolithic works. To calculate the index the author proposed a model and introduced the concept of reliability of the considered process of monolithic works as a probability of achieving the final goal. At the same time, the process of monolithic works performance both for residential and civil objects is taken as a complex stochastic system, which includes a set of co-dependent relations. The application of the assumed approach for the calculation of organizational and technological reliability of monolithic works with small changes, refinements can be applied to the calculation of other works in the construction of buildings and structures throughout the life cycle of construction. At the same time, this methodology makes it possible to obtain a numerical value of reliability assessment, which is very relevant when choosing organizational and technological solutions. Big data analytics have radically transformed data collection protocols in population censuses. Yet despite the unprecedented degree of automation these technologies afford, much of the critical work that goes into making data 'actionable' still hinges on the ethical labour of data operators in these novel human–machine settings. By following training activities and conducting interviews with technologists who worked on Brazil's 2022 population census, this article traces the workings of a fraud-detecting system designed to reduce costs and improve data quality and collection. Our ethnography identifies two competing modes of truth-making, which we term 'probabilistic' and 'performative', whereby numbers and census-takers 'tame' each other. Tracking human–machine data entanglements on the fringes of calculation centres helps unpack how futurities are affectively negotiated and woven into the political fabric of these political technologies. This manuscript shows the CMOS design of Lorenz systems using operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). Two Lorenz systems are then synchronized in a master–slave topology and used to implement a CMOS secure communication system. The contribution is devoted to the correct design of first- and second-order OTA-C filters, using 180 nm CMOS technology, to guarantee chaotic behavior. First, Simulink is used to simulate a secure communication system using two Lorenz systems connected in a master–slave topology, which is tested using sinusoidal signals that are masked by chaotic signals. Second, the Lorenz systems are scaled to have amplitudes of the state variables below 1 Volt, to allow for CMOS design using OTA-C filters. The transconductances of the OTAs are tuned to accomplish a Laplace transfer function. In this manner, this work highlights the design of a second-order CMOS OTA-C filter, whose damping factor is tuned to generate appropriate chaotic behavior. Finally, chaotic masking is performed by designing a whole CMOS secure communication system by using OTA-C based Lorenz systems, and its SPICE simulation results show its appropriateness for hardware security applications.
