The non-scanning radiometer with short-wavelength (SW: 0.2–5.0 μm) and total-wavelength (TW: 0.2–50.0 μm) channels is the primary payload of the Integrated Earth–Moon Radiation Observation System (IEMROS), which is designed to provide comprehensive Earth radiation measurements and lunar calibrations at the L1 Lagrange point of the Earth–Moon system from a global perspective. This manuscript introduces a radiometer preflight calibration methodology, which involves background removal and is validated using accurate and traceable reference sources. Simulated Earth view tests are performed to evaluate repeatability, linearity, and gain coefficients over the operating range. Both channels demonstrate repeatability uncertainties better than 0.34%, indicating consistent and reliable measuring performance. Comparative polynomial regression analysis confirms significant linear response characteristics with two-channel nonlinearity less than 0.20%. Gain coefficients are efficiently determined using a two-point calibration approach. Uncertainty analysis reveals an absolute radiometric calibration accuracy of 0.97% for the SW channel and 0.92% for the TW channel, underscoring the non-scanning radiometer's capability to provide dependable global Earth radiation budget data crucial to environmental and climate studies. This article aims to establish a new system for pyranometer calibration traceable to the radiometric chain. Different spectrum high flux LEDs have been used as tunable irradiance sources. The calibration procedure, uncertainty budget, and traceability chain of the solar irradiance measurements are presented. Additionally, the results were evaluated using a reference pyranometer, calibrated traceable to radiometric traceability and World Radiometric Reference (WRR). The uncertainty values are also estimated to be around 1.19 % (k = 2) for LEDs-based pyranometer-pyranometer calibration (WRR traceability), and about 0.68 % (k = 2) for reference standard radiometer based (Radiometric traceability). The deviation between the reference pyranometer and the pyranometer under test was about 0.8% using LED at 655nm for irradiance of 500 W/m2. The Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Technology Demonstration (TEMPEST-D) instrument is a five-frequency millimeter-wave radiometer operating from 87 to 181 GHz. The cross-track scanning radiometer has been operating on a 6U CubeSat in low Earth orbit since September 5, 2018. The direct-detection architecture of the radiometer reduces its mass and power consumption by eliminating the need for a local oscillator and mixer, also reducing system complexity. The instrument includes a scanning reflector and ambient calibration target. The reflector rotates continuously to scan the antenna beams in the cross-track direction, first across the blackbody calibration target, then toward the Earth over the full range of incidence angles, and finally to cosmic microwave background radiation at 2.73 K. This enables precision end-to-end calibration of the millimeter-wave receivers during every 2-s scan period. The TEMPEST-D millimeter-wave radiometers are based on 35-nm indium phosphide (InP) high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) low-noise amplifiers. Subject and Purpose. One of the relevant areas of remote sensing of the environment is the development of microwave methods of passive sensing of the atmosphere. The biggest challenge occurring in radiometric measurements is measuring system calibration. The reason lies in the lack of external calibration elements whose brightness temperatures are known with a high accuracy. The paper deals with the method for determining the sky brightness temperature by relative measurements at different elevation angles. The brightness temperatures refined in the way fit for radiometric system calibration. Methods and Methodology. Basically, the approach is governed by the dependence of the atmospheric brightness temperature on the elevation angle in terms of the plane-layered isothermal atmospheric model. The measurements rely on a three-centimeter radiometric system having a horn-reflector antenna combined with the MPL-1 weather radar, the entire range of elevation angles being accessible. Besides, a combined setup of two, 10 GHz and 36 GHz, radiometers is involved for measurements from a building window. Results. The previously proposed methodology for radiometric system calibration against the sky temperature obtained by relative measurements at different elevation angles has been analyzed and tested. The calibration possibility has been examined in the case that zenith measurements are unavailable. Conclusion. The proposed method for getting sky temperatures upon relative measurements at different elevation angles significantly increases accuracy of radiometric system calibration and extends a range of weather conditions admitting calibration of the kind. It has been shown that the radiometric system calibration against the sky temperature is possible even with zenith measurements excluded.

We present a co-designed Dicke switch and low-noise amplifier (LNA) in which the switch incorporates a transformer-based topology and serves as the input matching network of the LNA. This topology is configured to minimize the amplifier gain mismatch between the two switching states caused by process variations while providing a low noise figure (NF). The circuit is implemented in a 0.13-μm SiGe BiCMOS technology, and it achieves more than 20-dB gain and minimum NF values of 4.5 and 0.58 dB at 300 and 20 K, respectively. It consumes a dc power of 15 mW. The front-end switch presents a peak isolation of 17 dB, and the input return loss is better than 15 dB across 45–70 GHz. A noise source is also coupled to the front-end circuitry to enable on-chip calibration. The noise performance and reliability of several on-chip p-n junctions were characterized, and the one with the highest excess noise ratio was coupled to the front-end circuitry. To the best of our knowledge, the lowest NF of an integrated switch and LNA at V-band frequencies is achieved in the present work, along with the first reliability study of on-chip noise sources in a SiGe BiCMOS technology. In the application of ultraviolet (UV light), it is necessary to obtain reliable information on UV effectiveness, i.e., one should know the fluence reached by microorganisms or the dose absorbed by chemicals. For this reason, a collimated beam apparatus (CBA) is widely used. International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) recommends a protocol on CBA in which the beams are assumed to be collimated. In this work, focusing on the fact that so-called collimated beams are not really collimated, a mathematical model for CBA is established, and the influencing factors and specifications of CBA are rigorously analyzed. The aperture type not only has high measurement accuracy, but its specific characteristics are also suitable for the calibration of radiometers in chemical actinometers. To monitor sea surface salinity (SSS) in coastal zones with high temporal and spatial resolution, an L-band phased array radiometer is developed. However, it is well known that the L-band radiometers suffer from serious radio frequency interference (RFI) effects. To mitigate the RFI effects, an RFI detection and mitigation algorithm is proposed for the L-band phased array radiometer. The experiments in coastal zones are performed to assess the performance of the RFI algorithm. Solar diffusers (SDs) have often been used as the onboard calibrators for the radiometric calibration of reflective solar band imaging sensors. After being spaceborne, the reflectance of SDs is observed to degrade with spectral dependence due to exposure to solar UV and energetic particle radiation. Long-term spectral reflectance data of SDs onboard multiple LEO imaging sensors, such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on SNPP, are analyzed. The reflectance of SDs on these three instruments degrades faster for the shorter wavelength (0.4– $0.6~\mu \text{m}$) bands than the longer wavelength bands. The Surface Roughness-induced Rayleigh Scattering (SRRS) model is applied to simulate the SD degradation on these instruments, and the growth of the surface roughness parameter of the SDs is derived. It is determined that the change of surface roughness scale length is ~tens of nanometers. To show the consistency of roughness growth rates among the SDs on Terra/Aqua MODIS and SNPP VIIRS instruments, the functional dependences of the growth rates are characterized according to the SD exposure time and the stage of surface roughness. It is also found that the flattening or reverse in the growth trend of the surface roughness for these three SDs occurred around the same interval between October 2013 and October 2015. The confirmation of the applicability of SRRS model with the long-term spectral reflectance data from three independent spaceborne SDs facilitates a better understanding of the origin and physical processes of the SD degradation. Methods for passive sensing the atmosphere in the microwave range are one of important directions of remote sensing of environmental protection. To develop simple and cost-effective technical solutions and radiometric measuring techniques is an important task. A simple mobile radiometric system of 3-cm wavelength range designed for meteorological research has been presented. The radiometer is made on the basis of modulation scheme with some features of construction elements and input calibration. A method for accurate determination of the sky brightness temperature used for calibrating radiometric system has been proposed. A variant of constructing a radiometer with the use of satellite converter gas been implemented.

Predictable quantum efficient detectors (PQEDs), based on photoelectric effect in silicon semiconductor, have proved their potential as optical radiant power primary standard. At present, simulations for semiconductor devices are the common method to predict the response of a PQED. As an alternative, this work investigates the feasibility of an experimental technique, the self-calibration of silicon photodiodes at room temperature by means of temperature sensors. A device which compares two physics principles by optical power, working both as a photodetector and a radiometer based on electrical substitution, was made. The device allows for measuring the current generated under irradiation (in photocurrent mode) and the heating of the system, induced by a laser or forward biasing, to determine the optical power (in thermal mode). The feasibility study consists of testing the equivalence between both modes and establishing the suitable range of optical power. The range of optimum optical power level, where both modes run in the linear domain at the present configuration, is from 300 µW up to 1 mW. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflective solar bands (RSBs) are calibrated on-orbit using a solar diffuser (SD) with its degradation tracked by an onboard SD stability monitor (SDSM). The SDSM has nine detectors with wavelengths from 0.41 to 0.94 \mu \textm . It is operated during each scheduled SD calibration event, making alternate observations of the sun and the SD. Due to erroneous design parameters, which led to the misalignment of the key elements in the SDSM, there are significant ripples in the sun view responses as the solar viewing angle changes. At the mission beginning, the effect of the ripples was eliminated by normalizing each SDSM detector response to the response of detector 9 (D9) at 0.94 \mu \textm , assuming that D9 had no degradation. However, D9 degradation increases over MODIS operation times. Degradation of up to 2% has recently been observed in D9 for the Terra MODIS. A newly implemented approach reduces the sun view ripples using a lookup table constructed using SDSM data carefully selected from a short period early in the mission lifetime. In this paper, we provide an overview of different approaches that have been applied over the years by the MODIS Characterization Support Team to track the on-orbit SD degradation. We evaluate the overall SD and SDSM on-orbit performance for both Terra and Aqua MODIS, as well as the impact on the MODIS RSB calibration uncertainty. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The global measurement of sea-surface salinity and more precise measurements of soil moisture from space has been enabled by L-band observations from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, the Aquarius mission, and the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. These measurements are key components of the global water cycle and the ability to resolve climate scale variations in these variables is extremely valuable for improved understanding of how the hydrologic cycle varies in a changing climate system. It is therefore imperative that the radiometer systems making these measurements be calibrated to remove any spurious instrument temporal drifts. In this paper, models are developed over Antarctica and rainforest regions to track the gain and offset drifts in spaceborne L-band radiometer brightness-temperature (TB) measurements. The Antarctica region is found to be best for tracking small variations (0.1 K over 10 days) for vertically polarized observations near the Brewster angle. The rainforest regions are found to be best for tracking longer term variations ($ > $60 days) in all channels, due to larger uncertainty in the surface temperature knowledge, and excellent for tracking shorter term variations between channels ($ < $10 days). These reference regions were used to separate a long-term gain drift and a quasi-monthly offset variation in the Aquarius radiometer. These observations eventually led to the characterization of the root cause for the drift and are contributing to improved correction methods based on models for the hardware behavior. L-band brightness temperature (TB) has been shown to provide the best sensitivity to soil moisture (SM) although C- and X-band based products offer a longer time-series from satellite-based measurements. Currently, global coverage SM is routinely produced from spaceborne measurements using all three frequency bands, but despite continued validation efforts of the products, the relative characteristics and performance of these observations have not been fully established. Therefore, this study focused on the parametrization of SM retrieval algorithms at L-, C- and X-bands using TB observations from the L-band radiometer on NASA's SM Active Passive (SMAP) mission and the C- and X-band channels of JAXA's Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) onboard the GCOM-W satellite. These can be applied in global SM retrieval algorithms using either one of the frequencies or a combination of them. The reference in situ SM data was obtained from 12 core validation sites across various land cover types around the world. The investigation highlighted the known challenges of retrieving SM from C- and X-band data compared to the higher sensitivity of the L-band data. Even with a site-specific retrieval algorithm parameterization, the mean correlation of the C- and X-band retrievals for the core validation site SM measurement were much lower than that for L-band, being 0.52 (0.54) and 0.45 (0.47) for vertical (horizontal) polarization, respectively, while for the L-band retrieval the corresponding values were 0.81 (0.77). The parameterization exercise showed that matching the C- and X-band TB measurements with an emission model was not difficult; the problem was relating the observations to SM under the influence of large roughness and vegetation effects. As a result, parameter optimization produced values for some sites that were not realistic or did not allow any practical sensitivity to SM at C- and X-band. Considering the L-band observations, the parameter optimization resulted in superior bias performance as compared to the operational SMAP product parameterization, but the sensitivity to SM changes (R and unbiased root mean square difference) did not improve markedly, or in some cases degraded at the expense of a smaller bias. • Spaceborne radiometer observation at L/C/X-band over 12 soil moisture core sites. • Calibration of soil moisture retrieval algorithm for L/C/X-band using the core sites. • L-band retrieval achieves correlation of 0.8 while C/X-band achieves only 0.5. • Retrieval capability of C/X-band questionable over some of the sites. • Calibration of L-band improves bias and RMSD over SMAP product but not sensitivity. In this work, absolute calibration of the Chinese HY-2 satellite altimetry mission is carried out, employing Pass No. 280 and the calibration facility, CRS1, located in the Southwest end of the island of Crete, Greece. Satellite Pass No. 280 is descending and follows a ground track almost parallel to the west coast of Crete. It comes close to the coast, at a distance of about 9 km from the CRS1 calibration site, and finally goes away south of Crete. The HY-2 sensor geophysical data records (S-GDR) have been incorporated into the calibration procedures and processing has taken place for cycles No. 54–62, at 20 Hz data rate. Some peculiarities in the HY-2 satellite altimeter data, as delivered and depicted in the I-GDR and S-GDR data, have also been noticed. All calibration results have been determined using a regional, precise and detailed geoid, along with a good knowledge of local ocean circulation and site characteristics and a well-defined sea-surface calibration methodology. The first preliminary results for the HY-2 altimeter calibration have shown that the initial cycles, up to No. 51, display an erratic behavior. After those cycles, the altimeter range bias values seem to be stable and reach a value of B = −45.6 cm ± 4.4 cm, when applying the net instrument corrections as provided in the GDR. If the relativistic effects of the satellite clocks are properly applied for the net instrument corrections, then the altimeter range bias goes down to B = −27 cm ± 3 cm. Also, preliminary cross-over analysis with the SARAL/AliKa and Jason-2 satellites show a bias of B = −23 cm, and B = −28.5 cm, respectively. The performance of the HY-2 on-board radiometer has also been examined in terms of the wet troposphere corrections and shows a mean difference of −1 cm ± 0.1 cm with respect to in-situ GNSS-derived corrections. Finally, the ionosphere path corrections of the HY-2 satellite show a difference of +1 cm ± 1.1 cm, when compared against the GNSS-derived ionosphere values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 350\,\textkm \times 350\,\textkm area near the Concordia station on the high plateau of Dome-C in Antarctica has been mapped by an airborne L-band radiometer system. The area was expected to display a rather uniform brightness temperature (TB) close to the yearly mean temperature—well suited for calibration checks for spaceborne instruments like SMOS, Aquarius, and SMAP. The measured TBs show unexpected variations like 8-K variation over 240 km on an east–west profile through Concordia, and in certain local cases, a slope of about 0.7 K/km. Comparing the measured TB map with bottom topography reveals a convincing correlation. Simulations show that variations in bedrock topography can indeed modulate the TB appropriately to explain the observed variations. It is concluded that use of the Dome-C area for calibration check of spaceborne radiometers is indeed viable, but with caution—especially when comparing instruments with different spatial resolutions. A calibrated radiometer has been developed to enable the collection of accurate infrared measurements of sea surface temperature (SST) from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A key feature of this instrument is that in situ calibration is achieved with two built-in blackbodies (BBs). The instrument is designed so that the 2-D microbolometer array produces infrared images incremented as the aircraft travels, resulting in a well-calibrated strip of SST. Designed to be carried by medium-class UAVs, the Ball Experimental SST (BESST) instrument has been also successfully flown on manned aircraft. A recent intercalibration of BESST was carried out at the University of Miami using their National Institute of Standards and Technology traceable water-bath BB and a Fourier transform interferometer, the Marine-Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI). The characterization of the BESST instrument with the Miami BB demonstrates the linearity and precision of the response of the microbolometer-based radiometer. Coincident measurements of SST from a nearby pier clearly demonstrated the excellent performance of the BESST instrument with a mean SST equal to that of the M-AERI and an RMS of 0.14 K very close to the microbolometer's advertised precision of 0.1 K. Cold calibration was not possible in Miami due to condensation, but a Ball BB was characterized relative to the Miami water-bath BB, and calibrations were made in Boulder at lower temperatures than were possible in Miami. We present a new high-fidelity method of calibrating a cross-track scanning microwave radiometer using Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (GPSRO) measurements. The radiometer and GPSRO receiver periodically observe the same volume of atmosphere near the Earth's limb, and these overlapping measurements are used to calibrate the radiometer. Performance analyses show that absolute calibration accuracy better than 0.25 K is achievable for temperature sounding channels in the 50-60-GHz band for a total-power radiometer using a weakly coupled noise diode for frequent calibration and proximal GPSRO measurements for infrequent (approximately daily) calibration. The method requires GPSRO penetration depth only down to the stratosphere, thus permitting the use of a relatively small GPS antenna. Furthermore, only coarse spacecraft angular knowledge (approximately one degree rms) is required for the technique, as more precise angular knowledge can be retrieved directly from the combined radiometer and GPSRO data, assuming that the radiometer angular sampling is uniform. These features make the technique particularly well suited for implementation on a low-cost CubeSat hosting both radiometer and GPSRO receiver systems on the same spacecraft. Tipping calibration is an important technique for the absolute calibration of ground-based microwave radiometers. The standard tipping calibration is usually used in clear atmosphere. The spatial variations of liquid water in cloudy atmosphere may lead to great calibration errors in the process of standard tipping calibration. A new method of tipping calibration for ground-based microwave radiometers is proposed, which uses an accurate channel to calibrate another inaccurate channel in cloudy atmosphere. The simulation and measurements show that the method proposed here can eliminate the radiation of cloud liquid water and calibrate the radiometer under cloudy-sky conditions effectively. A relative tipping calibration is also introduced to retrieve the parameters in cloudy atmosphere. It has been proven that the relative tipping calibration can reduce the retrieval error significantly in cloudy atmosphere even though neither of the two channels is accurate. This paper presents a built-in calibration procedure of a 10-to-20 GHz polarimeter aimed at measuring the I, Q, U Stokes parameters of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. A full-band square waveguide double directional coupler, mounted in the antenna-feed system, is used to inject differently polarized reference waves. A brief description of the polarimetric microwave radiometer and the system calibration injector is also reported. A fully polarimetric calibration is also possible using the designed double directional coupler, although the presented calibration method in this paper is proposed to obtain three of the four Stokes parameters with the introduced microwave receiver, since V parameter is expected to be zero for the CMB radiation. Providing uncertainties in satellite datasets used for Earth observation can be a daunting prospect because of the many processing stages and input data required to convert raw detector counts to calibrated radiances. The Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) was designed to provide measurements of the Earth's surface for operational and climate applications. In this paper the authors describe the traceability chain and derivation of uncertainty estimates for the thermal infrared channel radiometry. Starting from the instrument model, the contributing input quantities are identified to build up an uncertainty effects tree. The characterisation of each input effect is described, and uncertainty estimates provided which are used to derive the combined uncertainties as a function of scene temperature. The SLSTR Level-1 data products provide uncertainty estimates for fully random effects (noise) and systematic effects that can be mapped for each image pixel, examples of which are shown.
