Ciénegas are desert wetlands that are strongly correlated with the stability of the hydrologic cycle in arid landscapes. However, these environments are particularly vulnerable to climate change, drought, water diversion, and fire suppression which all have contributed to the degradation of ciénegas along the U.S.-Mexican borderlands. Therefore, identifying the timing of precipitation patterns in this region is of particular interest because of its relationship to many ecological responses of the landscape such as groundwater recharge and fire. Here, we present the first-ever fire paleoenvironmental record from Ciénega Chimeneas, a ciénega complex in the Sierra de Juárez of Baja California. We explore how changes in the amount and seasonality of moisture affected ciénega complexes and fire activity from across the southwestern North American region over the past 45,000 years. Our record suggests that during the late glacial period, 41,000–21,000 cal yr BP, the increase of Larrea and Quercus indicate an increase in summer precipitation. Subsequently, when summer precipitation increased, pollen preservation and pollen accumulation rates (PAR) also increased. Increased vegetation allowed for increased fire activity during the late glacial period. Regionally, most of the comparison sites also indicated wet conditions during the full glacial period. However, around 21,000 cal yr BP, effective moisture decreased resulting in a dramatic change in the vegetation assemblage. Specifically, the summer wet taxa disappeared, while pollen preservation and PAR decreased, suggesting a dry period until ∼14,000 cal yr BP. Little fire activity is recorded after 21,000 cal yr BP, likely due to the absence of fuels. At ∼14,000 cal yr BP, Larrea and Quercus reappear suggesting increased summer precipitation. However, the appearance of Cyperaceae and increases in grasses suggest increased winter precipitation. We suggest that the combination of summer wet and winterwet taxa ∼14,000 cal yr BP represents an increase in ENSO conditions, while the summer moisture controls remained relatively constant. At least two global "Snowball Earth" glaciations occurred during the Neoproterozoic Era (1000-538.8 million years ago). Post-glacial surface environments during this time are recorded in cap carbonates: layers of limestone or dolostone that directly overlie glacial deposits. Postulated environmental conditions that created the cap carbonates lack consensus largely because single hypotheses fail to explain the cap carbonates' global mass, depositional timescales, and geochemistry of parent waters. Here, we present a global geologic carbon cycle model before, during, and after the second glaciation (i.e. the Marinoan) that explains cap carbonate characteristics. We find a three-stage process for cap carbonate formation: (1) low-temperature seafloor weathering during glaciation generates deep-sea alkalinity; (2) vigorous post-glacial continental weathering supplies alkalinity to a carbonate-saturated freshwater layer, rapidly precipitating cap carbonates; (3) mixing of post-glacial meltwater with deep-sea alkalinity prolongs cap carbonate deposition. We suggest how future geochemical data and modeling refinements could further assess our hypothesis. A new formation mechanism is proposed to explain the presence and characteristics of "cap carbonates": enigmatic rocks leftover from Snowball Earth events, during which Earth was globally ice-covered for millions of years in the distant past. Aim: In northern environments, periods of isolation during Pleistocene glaciations and subsequent recolonization and secondary contact have had a significant influence on contemporary diversity of many species. The recent advent of high‐resolution genomic analyses allows unprecedented power to resolve genomic signatures of such events in northern species. Here, we provide the highest resolution genomic characterization of Atlantic salmon in North America to date to infer glacial refugia and the geographic scales of post‐glacial secondary contact. Location: North America. Taxon: Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. Methods: Samples were collected for 5455 individuals from 148 populations, encompassing the majority of the Atlantic salmon's native range in North America, from Labrador to Maine. Individuals were genotyped using a 220K single nucleotide polymorphism array aligned to the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) genome. Spatial genetic structure (principal component analysis, k‐means clustering, admixture) was evaluated in conjunction with genomic comparisons of these identified lineages to infer the refugia during the last glacial maximum and regions of secondary contact following recolonization. Results: Spatial genomic analyses identified three phylogeographic groups, consistent with the northward recolonization from two southern glacial refugia in North America (a western Maritime lineage and an eastern Newfoundland and Labrador lineage), with subsequent differentiation of the eastern lineage into two separate groups. Secondary contact among these North American groups was observed within the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, and evidence of trans‐Atlantic secondary contact was detected within the eastern Newfoundland and Labrador lineage. Comparison of groups from insular Newfoundland with those from mainland Labrador suggests genomic regions displaying high differentiation were characterized by elevated European admixture, suggesting a possible role of European secondary contact in population divergence. Main Conclusions: These findings present the first evidence suggesting that genomic diversity in extant North American Atlantic salmon populations has resulted from allopatric isolation in two glacial refugia followed by both regional and trans‐Atlantic recolonization and secondary contact and demonstrate the power of genomic tools to resolve historical drivers of diversity in wild populations. Natural analogues are systems that have evolved over geological timescales with features similar to one or several components of a deep geological repository (DGR). Natural analogues complement short-duration laboratory studies since they are existing reflections of many long-term processes that might affect the performance of a repository. Mathematical models are often used for the post-closure safety assessment of a DGR. Confidence in the models' predictions is enhanced when the models successfully simulate the past evolution of a natural analogue. This paper summarizes the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's (CNSC's) recent research on natural analogues to inform on (1) glacial erosion, (2) engineered barrier system, and (3) uranium reactive transport in the context of DGRs for radioactive wastes. Glaciation and its erosion are prominent factors impacting the performance of future DGRs at high latitudes in the northern hemisphere. The authors have reviewed the field data from the Greenland Analogue Project, developed a conceptual and mathematical model for the simulation of the thermal conditions within the Greenland ice sheet, as well as the thermal-hydraulic conditions at its base and the ice sheet velocity, and eventually estimated the erosion rate at the site. The Cigar Lake Analogue demonstrates the long-term radionuclide containment capability of the illite clay zone enveloping the ore body, serving as an analogy to the engineered clay barriers. The CNSC and University of Ottawa analyzed 129I in the Cigar Lake core samples, and modeled and correlated the diffusion-dominated transport of radionuclides over the geological evolution of the Cigar Lake deposit. The results provide information on the mobility of fission products and significant radionuclides in conditions analogous to the source, engineered barriers, and near-field host rock of a DGR. The reactive transport and geochemistry of the Kiggavik-Andrew Lake uranium deposit mineralization and remobilization was another natural uranium deposit analogue studied by the CNSC. A reactive transport model was established according to the conceptualized geochemical processes and run under specified boundary and initial conditions to validate the geochemical processes. [Display omitted] • U-Pb tuff ages internationally calibrate and correlate Bowen Basin sequences/biozones. • Deep-time climate-change and mass extinction related to arc super-volcanism. • Changhsingian arc volcanism contributed to demise of P4 glaciation and LPME. Eight new high-precision 206Pb/238U CA-IDTIMS ages from the Bowen Basin are integrated with previous CA-IDTIMS ages to further the calibration of Lopingian sequences that record a period of climatic change, extensive volcanism and mass extinction. Numerous tuffs occur within the late Permian as the basin develops and shifts towards increasingly terrestrial sedimentation and coal measures which record a series of super-eruptions spanning c. 2.5 million years between ∼254 and 252 Ma. One, the Yarrabee Tuff, represents a basin-wide event that has been used as a correlative surface, previously dated at a number of locations as 252.88 ± 0.07 Ma. These correspond to the Eastern Australia magmatic arc flare-up peaking at c. 253 Ma. A new CA-IDTIMS age is reported from the (upper) Black Alley Shale, at 257.8 ± 1.2 Ma (upper Black Alley). The Wuchiapingian-Changhsingian Boundary is in the lower Black Alley Shale. The Black Alley Shale/Peawaddy boundary is marked by the Micrhystridium evansii Acritarch Acme Zone and "Mantuan Productus Beds" here dated to c. 254.5 Ma (latest Wuchiapingian). This level and age may also mark the termination of the P4 glaciation of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age. Our Fort Cooper Coal age of 256.0 ± 1.4 Ma is consistent with ages from the Peawaddy and Tinowan formations. The Platypus Tuff, dated 256.58 ± 0.73 Ma, is another basin-wide marker of mid-Wuchiapingian age and represents a major super-volcanic event. The top of the Ingelara Formation is dated by our age of 257.33 ± 0.52 Ma. The Protohaploxypinus microcorpus and Playfordiaspora crenulata palynozones are of late Changhsingian age. We investigate the position and intensity changes of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over Asia (50°E−135°E) relative to the preindustrial period annually and seasonally during the Last Interglacial (LIG), Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and mid‐Holocene (MH) using available models from phases 3 and 4 of the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project. The multi‐model mean shows that the June–July–August ITCZ variations generally dominate the annual changes. The Asian ITCZ shifts northward over western Asia and southward over the eastern side in both the LIG and MH, and the opposite occurs in the LGM. Its intensity varies with longitude similarly for the LIG and MH and generally weakens in the LGM. Precipitation changes associated directly with ITCZ indices are primarily caused by the dynamic term in the LIG and MH, while both dynamic and thermodynamic terms play roles in the LGM, with major contributions from the convergence components. Plain Language Summary: As an intense rain belt, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) has an important influence on the regional climate, particularly over Asia. However, its future and past behaviors remain unclear. Based on multi‐model experiments, we investigate Asian ITCZ changes in location and intensity during the past three typical periods: the interglacial periods of the Last Interglacial and the mid‐Holocene and the glacial period of the Last Glacial Maximum. The Asian ITCZ overall strengthens and regionally moves northward over the western part and southward over the eastern part during the two interglacial periods relative to its preindustrial state, which are generally opposite to the position and intensity changes in the glacial period. These ITCZ changes are directly caused by uneven precipitation changes, which are dominated by atmospheric circulation changes during interglacial periods and additionally contributed from water vapor content changes during glacial periods, primarily through the vertical motion of air. This paper explores the resizing, reshaping and connectivity of islands by examining ongoing relations between land and sea in the context of the Channel Island of Guernsey. Ideas of materiality, temporality and vertical depth are employed to explore how contemporary tides and past sea‐level change impact island–island connections, and island–mainland connections between Guernsey and France. By focusing on the littoral zone as a space of encounter between land and sea, the paper explores some of the processes that challenge the notion of an island having fixed edges, emphasising the island's shape and size as always in flux. The paper then explores how tides alternatively reveal and hide material structures such as rocks and causeways, making the underwater scape temporally visible and differently accessible as an extension of land. It enables connections to be made and remade. This is demonstrated through the example of Guernsey and the tidal island of Lihou. The paper subsequently considers these ideas in the context of Quaternary sea‐level change. The land known as Guernsey alternated between literal island surrounded by water, and a steep‐sided plateau on the Normanno‐Breton plain, coinciding with interglacials and glacials. This connection is referred to as geologic. I argue that by acknowledging Guernsey's former visible connection with France, lack of contemporary visibility in the underwater scape does not render this a disconnection. Rather, the geologic, as further evidenced in the contemporary natural and built environment of Guernsey, continues through an underwater scape. It reappears in other Channal Islands and France, demonstrating ongoing connections at a land–sea–geologic interface. The paper argues for geology as a form of vertical depth. The last glacial period is known to have greatly influenced the demographic history of temperate forest trees, with important range contractions and post‐glacial expansions that led to the formation of multiple genetic lineages and secondary contact zones in the Northern Hemisphere. These dynamics have been extensively studied for European and North American species but are still poorly understood in other temperate regions of rich biodiversity such as the Caucasus. Our study helps filling that gap by deciphering the genomic landscapes of F. orientalis across the South Caucasus. The use of genome‐wide data confirmed a past demographic history strongly influenced by the Last Glacial Maximum, revealing two disjunct glacial refugia in the Colchis and Hyrcanian regions. The resulting patterns of genetic diversity, load and differentiation are not always concordant across the region, with genetic load pinpointing the location of the glacial refugia more efficiently than genetic diversity alone. The Hyrcanian forests show depleted genetic diversity and substantial isolation, even if long‐distance gene flow is still present with the main centre of diversity in the Greater Caucasus. Finally, we characterize a strong heterogeneity of genetic diversity and differentiation along the species chromosomes, with noticeably a first chromosome showing low diversity and weak differentiation. The Earth's rotation has been decelerating throughout its history due to tidal dissipation, but the variation of the rate of this deceleration through time has not been established. We present a detailed analysis of eight geological datasets to constrain the Earth's rotational history from 650 to 240 Mya. The results allow us to test physical tidal models and point to a staircase pattern in the Earth's deceleration from 650 to 280 Mya. During this time interval, the Earth-Moon distance increased by approximately 20,000 km and the length of day increased by approximately 2.2 h. Specifically, there are two intervals with high Earth rotation deceleration, 650 to 500 Mya and 350 to 280 Mya, separated by an interval of stalled deceleration from 500 to 350 Mya. The interval with stalled deceleration is attributed mainly to reduced tidal dissipation due to the continent-ocean configuration at the time, not to changes in Earth's dynamical ellipticity from continental assembly or glaciation. Modeling indicates that, except for the very recent time, tidal dissipation is the main driver for decelerating Earth rotation. One potential implication of our findings is that the Earth's tidal dissipation, along with Earth's rotation deceleration, may play a role in the evolving Earth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pliocene global temperatures periodically exceeded modern levels, offering insights into ice sheet sensitivity to warm climates. Ice-proximal geologic records from this period provide crucial but limited glimpses of Antarctic Ice Sheet behavior. We use an ice sheet model driven by climate model snapshots to simulate transient glacial cyclicity from 4.5 to 2.6 Ma, providing spatial and temporal context for geologic records. By evaluating model simulations against a comprehensive synthesis of geologic data, we translate the intermittent geologic record into a continuous reconstruction of Antarctic sea level contributions, revealing a dynamic ice sheet that contributed up to 25 m of glacial-interglacial sea level change. Model grounding line behavior across all major Antarctic catchments exhibits an extended period of receded ice during the mid-Pliocene, coincident with proximal geologic data around Antarctica but earlier than peak warmth in the Northern Hemisphere. Marine ice sheet collapse is triggered with 1.5 °C model subsurface ocean warming. Geologically validated ice-sheet model reconstructions show large-scale fluctuations between glacial and interglacial periods, suggesting that the Antarctic Ice Sheet is highly sensitive to past and future warm conditions. Understanding spatial patterns of biodiversity within the context of long‐term climatic shifts is of high importance, particularly in the face of contemporary climate change. In comparison to aboveground taxa, subterranean organisms respond to changing climates with generally much lower dispersal and recolonization potential, yet possible persistence in refugial groundwater habitats under ice‐shields. However, knowledge on general and geographically large‐scale effects of glaciation on contemporary groundwater biodiversity patterns is still very limited. Here, we tested how Late Pleistocene glaciation influenced the diversity and distribution of 36 groundwater amphipod species in Alpine and peri‐Alpine regions, characterized by extensive glaciation cycles, and how its legacy explains contemporary diversity patterns. We based our analysis on an unprecedented density of ~ 1000 systematic sampling sites across Switzerland. Using presence–absence data, we assessed biodiversity and species' ranges, and calculated for each site within‐catchment distance to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glacier extent. We then applied a sliding window approach along the obtained distance gradient from LGM ice‐covered to ice‐free sites to compute biodiversity indices reflecting local richness, regional richness, and differentiation, respectively. We found a strong signal of the LGM ice extent on the present‐day distribution of groundwater amphipods. Our findings revealed pronounced species turnover and spatial envelopes of individual species' occurrences in formerly ice‐covered, ice‐free, or transitional zones, respectively. While local richness remained constant and low along the LGM distance gradient, groundwater communities in LGM ice‐covered areas were more similar to each other and had lower gamma diversities and decreased occurrence probabilities per sliding window compared to communities in Pleistocene ice‐free areas. These results highlight the significant impact of Pleistocene glaciation on shaping biodiversity patterns of subterranean communities and imprinting contemporary distribution of groundwater organisms. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) is the most abundant sulfur gas in the atmosphere with links to terrestrial and oceanic productivity. We measured COS in ice core air from an intermediate-depth ice core from the South Pole using both dry and wet extraction methods, recovering a 52 500-year record. We find evidence for COS production in the firn, altering the atmospheric signal preserved in the ice core. Mean sea salt aerosol concentrations from the same depth are a good proxy for the COS production, which disproportionately impacts the measurements from glacial period ice with high sea salt aerosol concentrations. The COS measurements are corrected using sea salt sodium (ssNa) as a proxy for the excess COS resulting from the production. The ssNa-corrected COS record displays substantially less COS in the glacial period atmosphere than the Holocene and a 2 to 4-fold COS rise during the deglaciation synchronous with the associated climate signal. The deglacial COS rise was primarily source driven. Oceanic emissions in the form of COS, carbon disulfide (CS2), and dimethylsulfide (DMS) are collectively the largest natural source of atmospheric COS. A large increase in ocean COS emissions during the deglaciation suggests enhancements in emissions of ocean sulfur gases via processes that involve ocean productivity, although we cannot quantify individual contributions from each gas. During the glacial cycles of the past 800 000 years, Eurasia and North America were periodically covered by large ice sheets, causing up to 100 m of sea-level change. While Late Pleistocene glacial cycles typically lasted 80 000–120 000 years, the termination phases were completed in only 10 000 years. During these glacial terminations, the North American and Eurasian ice sheets retreated, which created large proglacial lakes in front of the ice-sheet margin. Proglacial lakes accelerate deglaciation as they facilitate the formation of ice shelves at the southern margins of the North American and Eurasian ice sheets. These ice shelves are characterized by basal melting, low surface elevations, and negligible friction at the base. Here, we use an ice-sheet model to quantify the (combined) effects of proglacial lakes on Late Pleistocene glacial terminations by examining their interplay with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and basal sliding. We find that proglacial lakes accelerate the deglaciation of ice sheets mainly because there is an absence of basal friction underneath ice shelves. If friction underneath grounded ice is applied to floating ice, full deglaciation is postponed by a few millennia, resulting in more ice remaining during interglacial periods and no extensive ice shelves forming. Additionally, the large uncertainty in melt rates underneath lacustrine ice shelves translates to an uncertainty in the timing of the termination of up to a millennium. Proglacial lakes are created by depressions in the landscape that remain after an ice sheet has retreated. The depth, size, and timing of proglacial lakes depend on the rate of bedrock rebound. We find that if bedrock rebounds within a few centuries (rather than a few millennia), the mass loss rate of the ice sheet is substantially reduced. This is because fast bedrock rebound prevents the formation of extensive proglacial lakes. Additionally, a decrease in ice thickness is partly compensated for by faster bedrock rebound, resulting in a higher surface elevation; lower temperatures; and a higher surface mass balance, which delays deglaciation. We find that a very long bedrock relaxation time does not substantially affect terminations, but it may lead to a delayed onset of the next glacial period. Knowledge of the behaviour of marine‐based ice sheets during times of climatic warming, such as the last deglaciation, provides important information to understand how ice sheets respond to external forcing. We analysed swath bathymetric and acoustic sub‐bottom profiler data from Wrigley Gulf on the western Amundsen Sea shelf, West Antarctica, to identify glacial features and reconstruct past changes in the extent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and ice flow directions. Glacial bedforms mapped within a bathymetric cross‐shelf trough include features showing cross‐cutting and overprinting relationship and indicate changes in ice‐flow orientation. Here, we distinguish at least two phases of different ice‐flow patterns on the Wrigley Gulf shelf. During the earlier phase, seaward ice stream flow on the inner shelf was deflected towards the east due to the existence of an ice dome on the middle‐outer continental shelf. Retreat of grounded ice towards the centre of this dome is indicated by the asymmetric cross profile of recessional moraines mapped on the middle shelf. The later glaciation phase was characterized by fast, NNW‐directed ice flow across the shelf along a broad front and subsequent stepwise landward retreat, which is evident from the common occurrence and orientation of mega‐scale glaciation lineations and grounding zone wedges on the middle‐inner shelf. It is uncertain whether the two phases of glaciation recorded on the seafloor occurred during the last and penultimate glacial periods or at different times of the last glaciation. Reliable chronological constraints from sediment cores and additional geomorphological information are needed to understand the cause of the changes in WAIS dynamics reflected by the two ice‐flow phases. The study of alluvial terraces helps in reconstructing the past geometries of rivers and makes it possible to assess the rate and pattern of fluvial incision and bedrock uplift. The fluctuations of river base levels are particularly variable and complex during the Late Quaternary in the lower course of rivers due to the interplay of responses to sea‐level fluctuations, tectonics and glacio‐isostasy. In this paper, the geometry and chronology of Manoir Brésil, an outcrop of alluvial terraces of the Lower Seine River, northern France, are investigated through a multidisciplinary study. Fluvial incision during MIS 8 in the Lower Seine in relation to sea‐level drop is recorded by an erosional surface cut into the chalk bedrock. This surface is covered by MIS 7 tidal deposits and then by younger, mostly periglacial colluvium (head). Manoir Brésil is therefore considered to be a chronological equivalent of the nearby, well‐studied Tourville‐la‐Rivière outcrop. The deposits are affected by post‐MIS 7 cryoturbation processes. Based on the local elevation of MIS 7 tidal deposits and erosional surfaces at Manoir Brésil, a minimum bedrock uplift rate of 25–40 m/Ma and an erosion rate of 125 m/Ma during glacial periods can be proposed. A regional correlation of the MIS 8 erosional surface is increasingly deformed by uplift towards the North, making it difficult to correlate the fluvial deposits along the Seine without precise chronological control. We interpret this regional tilt as the result of isostasy rebound after glaciations, consistent with the distribution of the elevations of MIS 5e and MIS 7 marine deposits along the English Channel. A pre‐Late Wisconsinan, post‐Illinoian, till sheet has long been recognized in north‐central Iowa, but has not been formally recognized or defined until now. Early researchers referred to these deposits as the 'Tazewell', and the term 'Sheldon Creek' was more recently used informally by the Iowa Geological Survey in guidebooks and reports. Recent mapping has extended the eastern margin significantly past previous interpretations. The Sheldon Creek Formation has similar lithologic characteristics to the overlying Alden Member of the Dows Formation, and the two units are distinguished mainly by stratigraphic position. Differentiation from underlying Pre‐Illinoian till units is accomplished using lithology, primarily matrix grain‐size and sand fraction lithology. A suite of 22 radiocarbon ages indicate two distinct, separate groupings within the Sheldon Creek data. These data strongly suggest ice advanced south to 42° N twice, once during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 and again during late MIS 3 or possibly early MIS 2. The presence of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in northern Iowa during MIS 3 has significant implications for ice sheet reconstructions during this interval. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glacier‐Like Forms (GLFs) are a subset of ice‐rich landforms known as Viscous Flow Features that populate Mars' mid‐latitudes. GLFs are morphologically similar to terrestrial valley glaciers and are thought to result from the redistribution of water ice from the Martian poles during periods of high obliquity throughout the Amazonian period. Their ages, formation, and evolutionary processes are poorly constrained. We selected the 100 largest GLFs from the most recent GLF population data set, and by analyzing their superimposing crater morphologies and populations, we calculated their Crater Retention Ages (CRAs) and identified any relationships between CRAs, crater morphologies, and GLF geometries. We also organized the crater morphologies into states of degradation based on the understood erosional sequences. 3,630 craters were mapped, which we classified into 15 different crater morphologies. We calculated 98 CRAs, ranging from ∼2.88 Ma to ∼3.5 Ga. On average, GLFs in the southern hemisphere have younger CRAs, higher average slopes, smaller crater populations, and show less variability in crater morphological development than in the northern hemisphere. GLFs with higher mean slopes display less crater morphology variety, suggesting that shallow GLFs experience less reworking than steeper GLFs. We propose that these regional and hemispheric differences are due to a combination of favorable topography and climate conditions, both during and between high obliquity periods. We present several scenarios for the GLFs observed in this study and suggest that the glacial and erosional processes that affect GLF evolution are likely locale‐dependent. We selected the 100 largest glaciers to estimate the age of their surfaces via impact crater counting, to identify impact crater morphologies, and to compare this data to existing data on GLF geometrics. Our analysis shows that glaciers with lower than average slopes have impact craters with a wider range of morphologies than glaciers with higher average surface slopes. Overall we find that glaciers in the southern hemisphere of Mars have young surface ages, and fewer and less developed craters compared with the northern hemisphere. We suggest different regional processes are occurring across Mars, with some areas favoring resurfacing processes more than others, and that glacier surface evolution is specific to the local environment. To date, the most complete paleolake‐level reconstructions for the late Pleistocene water bodies that once occupied the Dead Sea depression have been based on the combination of dating of lake sediments and terrestrial materials. However, despite these major accomplishments, there is still limited spatial control regarding the water levels, suggesting some degree of uncertainty concerning the magnitude and rate of lake‐level changes. Here, we re‐examine the late Pleistocene lake‐level changes in the Dead Sea during the transition from paleolake Lisan to the present‐day Dead Sea. We rely on systematic dating of fossil stromatolites including 84 radiocarbon and 15 U‐series ages, stable‐isotope measurements, paleobiology, high‐resolution topography, and numerical modeling to assess lake‐level changes. Our results indicate that the highstand of paleolake Lisan was of shorter duration and the transition between Lake Lisan and the Dead Sea occurred at least 5 Kyrs earlier than previously indicated. By refining the timeline and accuracy of lake‐level positions during the transition paleolake Lisan—Dead Sea, our study offers new insights into the regional and local paleo‐climatic conditions during the last glacial period in this region. Chironomids of the genus Diamesa (Meigen, 1835, Diptera: Chironomidae) inhabit cold, oxygen-rich running waters. We have investigated the presence of Diamesa and other freshwater macroinvertebrates at 22 stream sampling sites in 3 European high mountain regions (the Central Pyrenees, the Ötztal Alps, and the Tatra Mountains) to establish suitable temperature conditions for Diamesa dominance. It has been generally accepted that their high abundance was linked to the presence of glaciers; however, we have shown that in the Tatra Mountains, where there are no glaciers, the conditions for the dominance of Diamesa species are created due to permanent snowfields, the geographical orientation of the valley and shading by the surrounding high peaks. The historical connection of Diamesa to glaciers was investigated from the paleolimnological records of subfossil chironomid assemblages from the Bohemian Forest, where glaciers disappeared before or during the Late Glacial period. As expected, water temperature seems to be the main driver of Diamesa distribution, and we determined that the relative abundance of Diamesa species was significantly higher at the sites with a mean July water temperature below 6.5 °C. The Diamesa -dominated stream communities seems to be endangered due to ongoing climate warming and this assumption is supported by our paleolimnological results from the Bohemian Forest lakes, where Diamesa has disappeared due to warming of lake inflows at the beginning of the Holocene. These findings strengthen the former suggestions that some Diamesa species could be used as an indicator for tracking recent environmental changes in vulnerable ecosystems of cold mountain streams. A comprehensive paleoecological study of permafrost peat deposits from three locations in the middle reaches of the Yuribei River in the subzone of modern subarctic shrub tundra of the Yamal Peninsula has been performed. Based on the results of palynological and carpological methods and of radiocarbon dating, the changes in regional and local vegetation and climatic conditions of Central Yamal in the Late Glacial and the Postglacial periods are reconstructed. It is found that shrubby tundra with Betula nana was widespread in this area under climatic conditions close to modern ones in the Younger Dryas about 12.6–11.7 cal ka BP. The penetration of tree species (Betula sect. Betula, Picea obovata, and Larix sibirica) and accompanying boreal herbaceous plants began due to more favorable climatic conditions during the Early Holocene warming about 10.2–9.7 cal ka BP. The most favorable conditions for the growth of birch tree, larch, and spruce existed in Central Yamal in the Early and the Middle Holocene in the range of 10.2–4.4 cal ka BP. At that time, open woodlands or even closed forests were common, and the climate was much warmer than the modern one. Forest vegetation degraded and open landscapes with tundra communities were formed at the end of the Middle Holocene (4.5–4.4 cal ka BP). The climatic conditions became similar to modern ones. Reconstruction of the seawater carbonate system is essential for an improved understanding of glacial‐interglacial oceanic carbon cycling and climate change. However, continuous high‐resolution ocean carbonate chemistry data are generally lacking for the Plio‐Pleistocene. Here, we present a deep Pacific carbonate ion saturation state (Δ[CO32−]) record spanning the last 5.1 Myr, reconstructed from the size‐normalized shell weight of planktonic foraminifer in the western tropical Pacific. Deep Pacific Δ[CO32−] has been modulated primarily by orbital obliquity since 5.1 Ma, during which it has exhibited in‐phase behavior with the 40‐Kyr obliquity cycle. Significantly, the amplitude of the 40‐Kyr Δ[CO32−] cycles has responded linearly to obliquity forcing throughout the Plio‐Pleistocene, independent of the late Pliocene intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation. We speculate that the obliquity signal in the deep Pacific Δ[CO32−] record reflects an ocean‐atmosphere circulation feedback mediated by migration of the Southern Hemisphere Westerlies. Disentangling inputs of aeolian dust, ice-rafted debris (IRD), and eroded continental detritus delivered by ocean currents to marine sediments provide important insights into Earth System processes and climate. This study uses Sr-Nd-Pb isotope ratios of the continent-derived (lithogenic) fraction in deep-sea core TN057-6 from the subantarctic Southern Ocean southwest of Africa over the past 150,000 y to identify source regions and quantify their relative contributions and fluxes utilizing a mixing model set in a Bayesian framework. The data are compared with proxies from parallel core Ocean Drilling Program Site 1090 and newly presented data from potential South America aeolian dust source areas (PSAs), allowing for an integrated investigation into atmospheric, oceanic, and cryospheric dynamics. PSA inputs varied on glacial/interglacial timescales, with southern South American sources dominating up to 88% of the lithogenic fraction (mainly Patagonia, which provided up to 68%) during cold periods, while southern African sources were more important during interglacials. During the warmer Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 of the last glacial period, lithogenic fluxes were twice that of colder MIS2 and MIS4 at times, and showed unique isotope ratios best explained by Antarctic-derived IRD, likely from the Weddell Sea. The IRD intrusions contributed up to 41% at times and followed Antarctic millennial warming events that raised temperatures, causing instability of icesheet margins. High IRD was synchronous with increased bioavailable iron, nutrient utilization, high biological productivity, and decreased atmospheric CO2. Overall, TN057-6 sediments record systematic Southern Hemisphere climate shifts and cryospheric changes that impacted biogeochemical cycling on both glacial/interglacial and subglacial timescales. The Japanese islands were originally included in the Eurasian Continent as part of the southern and northern landmasses. The two landmasses were detached from the continent 18 million years ago. After that, the former was repeatedly connected to the Korean peninsula during glacial periods, but most of the latter was under seawater. Thus, all Japanese amphibians are undoubtedly derived from this nearby continent. However, it is unclear where the amphibians moved during the formation of the Japanese islands. To address the issue, we selected Glandirana rugosa as a representative of Japanese amphibians because this frog is the only species among amphibians in which nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial genes and sex chromosome evolution have been deeply investigated. Then, we constructed time‐calibrated and RAxML phylogenetic trees based on nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial genes of the Glandirana frogs in Japan and South Korea. Various sites were used to select SNP data from the Glandirana species and their sex chromosome evolution, and the cladograms we obtained suggest that ancient Glandirana frogs except for one group moved along with the southern landmass, when it was separated from the continent. The movements of the Glandirana frogs in Japan and South Korea obtained as results of this study will help scientists to understand the geographical changes that took place during the formation of the Japanese islands. Climate contrasts across drainage divides, such as orographic precipitation, are ubiquitous in mountain ranges, and as a result, mountain topography is often asymmetric. During glacial periods, these climate gradients can generate asymmetric glaciation, which may modify topographic asymmetry and drive divide migration during glacial‐interglacial cycles. Here we quantify topographic asymmetry caused by asymmetric glaciation and its sensitivity to different climate scenarios. Using an analytical model of a steady‐state glacial profile, we find that the degree of topographic asymmetry is primarily controlled by differences in the equilibrium line altitude across the divide. Our results show that glacial erosion can respond to the same climate asymmetry differently than fluvial erosion. When there are precipitation differences across the divide, glacial erosion produces greater topographic asymmetry than fluvial erosion, all else equal. These findings suggest that glaciations may promote drainage reorganization and landscape transience in intermittently glaciated mountain ranges. Mammals influence nearly all aspects of energy flow and habitat structure in modern terrestrial ecosystems. However, anthropogenic effects have probably altered mammalian community structure, raising the question of how past perturbations have done so. We used functional diversity (FD) to describe how the structure of North American mammal palaeocommunities changed over the past 66 Ma, an interval spanning the radiation following the K/Pg and several subsequent environmental disruptions including the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), the expansion of grassland, and the onset of Pleistocene glaciation. For 264 fossil communities, we examined three aspects of ecological function: functional evenness, functional richness and functional divergence. We found that shifts in FD were associated with major ecological and environmental transitions. All three measures of FD increased immediately following the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs, suggesting that high degrees of ecological disturbance can lead to synchronous responses both locally and continentally. We analysed the BSi (Biogenic Silica) contents of the marine core SK-313/1 from the southeastern Arabian Sea which is dated up to ~14.5 kyr BP. Results show that the maximum and minimum BSi contents are 2.5 and 0.5%, respectively. This is because of the low supply of silica skeleton and the high dissolution and dilution of terrigenous materials. The BSi mass accumulation rates indicate a trend of reduced paleoproductivity during the late Glacial period and increase during the Holocene, with global climatic shifts. Insolation changes at low latitudes, which regulate temperatures, may affect nutrient availability and, consequently productivity variations on a glacial–interglacial timescale. Notably, millennial events like the Younger Dryas (YD) periods, exhibited lower paleoproductivity, in contrast to the Bølling/Allerød (B-A) period and the middle Holocene, which displayed elevated levels of paleoproductivity. These millennial-scale fluctuations in siliceous productivity may be due to the changes in nutrient supply caused by the Indian summer monsoon (ISM). The period of increased paleoproductivity could be influenced by intensified chemical weathering and a boosted nutrient supply, which are consequences of the strengthened ISM during periods of relatively higher temperature. Amaranthaceae s.l. is a widely distributed family consisting of over 170 genera and 2000 species. Previous molecular phylogenetic studies have shown that Amaranthaceae s.s. and traditional Chenopodiaceae form a monophyletic group (Amaranthaceae s.l.), however, the relationships within this evolutionary branch have yet to be fully resolved. In this study, we assembled the complete plastomes and full‐length ITS of 21 Amaranthaceae s.l. individuals and compared them with 38 species of Amaranthaceae s.l. Through plastome structure and sequence alignment analysis, we identified a reverse complementary region approximately 5200 bp long in the genera Atriplex and Chenopodium. Adaptive evolution analysis revealed significant positive selection in eight genes, which likely played a driving role in the evolution of Amaranthaceae s.l., as demonstrated by partitioned evolutionary analysis. Furthermore, we found that about two‐thirds of the examined species lack the ycf15 gene, potentially associated with natural selection pressures from their adapted habitats. The phylogenetic tree indicated that some genera (Chenopodium, Halogeton, and Subtr. Salsolinae) are paraphyletic lineages. Our results strongly support the clustering of Amaranthaceae s.l. with monophyletic traditional Chenopodiaceae (Clades I and II) and Amaranthaceae s.s. After a comprehensive analysis, we determined that cytonuclear conflict, gene selection by adapted habitats, and incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) events were the primary reasons for the inconsistent phylogeny of Amaranthaceae s.l. During the last glacial period, certain species within Amaranthaceae s.l. underwent adaptations to different environments and began to differentiate rapidly. The mountains in the Atlantic Forest domain are environments that harbor a high biodiversity, including species adapted to colder climates that were probably influenced by the climatic variations of the Pleistocene. To understand the phylogeographic pattern and assess the taxonomic boundaries between two sister montane species, a genomic study of the butterflies Actinote mantiqueira and A. alalia (Nymphalidae: Acraeini) was conducted. Analyses based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene COI (barcode region) failed to recover any phylogenetic or genetic structure discriminating the two species or sampling localities. However, single nucleotide polymorphisms gathered using Genotyping‐by‐Sequencing provided a strong isolation pattern in all analyses (genetic distance, phylogenetic hypothesis, clustering analyses, and FST statistics) which is consistent with morphology, separating all individuals of A. alalia from all populations of A. mantiqueira. The three sampled mountain ranges where A. mantiqueira populations occur—Serra do Mar, Serra da Mantiqueira, and Poços de Caldas Plateau—were identified as three isolated clusters. Paleoclimate simulations indicate that both species' distributions changed according to climatic oscillations in the Pleistocene period, with the two species potentially occurring in areas of lower altitude during glacial periods when compared to the interglacial periods (as the present). Besides, a potential path between their distribution through the Serra do Mar Mountain range was inferred. Therefore, the Pleistocene climatic fluctuation had a significant impact on the speciation process between A. alalia and A. mantiqueira, which was brought on by isolation at different mountain summits during interglacial periods, as shown by the modeled historical distribution and the observed genetic structure. The Yunnan‐Guizhou Plateau (YGP) is characterized by the distinctive isolated habitat of the limestone Karst Islands and features the Wumeng Mountains, which divide the YGP into the two Plateaus of Yunnan and Guizhou. This study aimed to assess the effects of geographic isolation and past climate fluctuation on the distribution of flora in the YGP. To achieve this, we carried out the phylogeographical pattern and genetic structure based on chloroplast and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence in relation to past (Last Glacial Maximum) and present distributions based on ecological niche modeling for Morella nana, an important wild plant resource and endemic to the YGP once considered a vulnerable species. The results suggest that the genetic and chlorotype network structures of M. nana are divided into at least two groups: cpDNA chlorotype H2 (or dominant nrDNA haplotypes h1 and h2), distributed primarily to the east of the Wumeng Mountains, and cpDNA chlorotypes H1 and H3–H10 (or dominant nrDNA haplotype h2 and h3), distributed to the west of the Wumeng Mountains. A deep genetic split was noted within the two groups to reach 25 steps, especially for the cpDNA fragment variation. This east–west divergence reveals the existence of a natural geographical isolation boundary in the form of the Wumeng Mountains, and supports the existence of at least two glacial refuges during the Quaternary glacial period, along with two genetic diversity center, and at least two large geographic protection units for the important species of M. nana. This study indicates that the phylogeographical pattern of M. nana can be attributed to geographic/environmental isolation caused by the Wumeng Mountains and climate fluctuation during the last glacial maximum, and proposes an effective strategy to protecting this important plant resource. The Cryogenian Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations stand as the most extreme climate events in Earth history. Intriguingly, large-scale Mn carbonates characterize the nonglacial interlude of this period in South China. The formation mechanism of Mn carbonates and the potential correlation underlying this temporal association remain elusive. Here, we present an integrated petrographic and geochemical study of drill core materials intercepting the Mn-bearing Datangpo Formation. Rare earth element patterns of these Mn carbonates exhibit positive Ce anomalies and a lack of Y anomalies, which differ from those of modern seawater but resemble marine Mn-Fe oxides. These features, combined with negative carbonate carbon isotope compositions (δ13C carb as light as −9.9 ‰ VPDB), indicate the presence of oxide precursors and the incorporation of light carbon during Mn-carbonate precipitation. Phosphate oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O p) of HCl-extractable apatite reveal a ∼4 ‰ difference in the average δ18O p between Mn-rich and Mn-poor rocks. We propose that the more positive δ18O p of Mn-rich samples may result from the dominance of phosphate released by reductive dissolution of metal oxides or a heavier oxygen isotope signal of surrounding waters with which isotopic equilibrium has been reached. We further illustrate how marine invasions into coastal anoxic basins could have triggered the formation of Mn oxides and highlight the role of glaciation–deglaciation in the development of giant Mn deposits. In the 150 years since Sternberg's Law of downstream fining was published, causes and complications have proliferated with research in many fluvial environments. The basic relationship is a first-order differential equation expressing an energy relationship, and the geologic causes and effects that fall under its umbrella are diverse. Grain size distributions of sands provide indications of modes of deposition, but gravels do not. However, while competence is seldom a limiting factor for sands, it is for gravels. The study area includes the low-relief Great Plains and the high relief of the Rocky Mountains. Island mountain ranges complicate this somewhat, but stream courses are sufficiently simple for Sternberg's Law. Most of the study area exhibits features generally believed to have resulted from Ice-Age glaciation. Catastrophic evidence in the form of planation surfaces is also present. Thus channelized flow, transport by ice, and sheet flow are all candidate processes for transport of gravel. Predictions of grain size distributions from these processes are compared with results from statistical analysis of 5,839 sieve analysis reports. A decrease in atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) is considered an important prerequisite for the onset and intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG). However, how the ocean sequestered missing CO2 during the NHG is still uncertain. Changes in surface productivity and deep ventilation in the Southern Ocean (SO) have been proposed to explain the variations in atmospheric pCO2 over the last eight glacial cycles, but it is unclear whether these mechanisms contributed to the decrease in atmospheric pCO2 during the NHG. Using titanium-normalized contents and mass accumulation rates of biogenic opal and total organic carbon from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 374 Site U1524A, we reconstruct the productivity in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, from 3.3 Ma to 2.4 Ma. The productivity records exhibit a long-term decreasing trend and several distinct phased evolutionary features. Specifically, the local productivity fluctuated dramatically during 3.3–3.0 Ma, decreased gradually during 3.0–2.6 Ma, and remained relatively constant during 2.6–2.4 Ma. By comparing productivity with its potential influences, we infer that the phased and long-term evolutions of productivity were mainly controlled by changes in deep ocean ventilation. Sea ice expansion might have decreased productivity during 3.3–3.0 Ma by light attenuation. Changes in eolian dust input have little effect on productivity. Further analysis revealed no coupling linkage between productivity and atmospheric pCO2, indicating that the productivity in the SO Antarctic Zone (AZ) was not the main factor controlling the atmospheric CO2 decrease during the NHG. To improve our understanding of the role of SO processes in the NHG, further studies should focus on the potential influences of deep ocean ventilation on atmospheric pCO2 in the AZ, and similar studies should also be extended to the sea area in the Subantarctic Zone. It has been hypothesized that the Araucaria Forest in southern Brazil underwent expansions in the past, driven either by human groups or by climate fluctuations of the Holocene and Pleistocene. Fossil pollen records of the Paraná pine Araucaria angustifolia, a dominant tree in that forest, provide some insights into when those may have occurred. Still, the timing of those expansions has never been estimated. To infer past range shifts and shed light on their main drivers, we employed next‐generation DNA sequencing (ddRADseq), machine learning, and a comprehensive database of fossil pollen records into a study of historical demographic inference and paleo‐distribution modeling of the Paraná pine. We found that A. angustifolia comprises two populations expanding at different times: one in the Mantiqueira mountain chain, the other in the southern Brazilian plateau. The southern population began to expand during the Last Glacial Period ~ 70 kya, long before human arrival in South America. Still, genetic analyses support that humans later impacted this population, resulting in lower genetic diversity, higher inbreeding, and high levels of gene flow over large distances with a weak pattern of isolation‐by‐distance. It is possible this resulted from human influence on seed dispersal and germination on the southern Brazilian plateau. The Mantiqueira population, in contrast, expanded only recently (~ 3 kya). This timing coincides with Holocene climatic changes and human settlements established further south, although, to date, there is little archeological evidence of human impact in the Mantiqueira. In addition, multitemporal species distribution models built from a combination of present‐day and pollen records infer a range expansion of the Araucaria Forest during glacial times until the cold humid HS1 event (~ 16 kya), when the forest was most widespread, with no evidence of glacial refugia. Aim: Within the intensively‐studied, well‐documented latitudinal diversity gradient, the deep‐sea biodiversity of the present‐day Norwegian Sea stands out with its notably low diversity, constituting a steep latitudinal diversity gradient in the North Atlantic. The reason behind this has long been a topic of debate and speculation. Most prominently, it is explained by the deep‐sea glacial disturbance hypothesis, which states that harsh environmental glacial conditions negatively impacted Norwegian Sea diversities, which have not yet fully recovered. Our aim is to empirically test this hypothesis. Specific research questions are: (1) Has deep‐sea biodiversity been lower during glacials than during interglacials? (2) Was there any faunal shift at the Mid‐Brunhes Event (MBE) when the mode of glacial–interglacial climatic change was altered? Location: Norwegian Sea, deep sea (1819–2800 m), coring sites MD992277, PS1243, and M23352. Time period: 620.7–1.4 ka (Middle Pleistocene–Late Holocene). Taxa studied: Ostracoda (Crustacea). Background and Aims Rubus ser. Glandulosi provides a unique model of geographical parthenogenesis on a homoploid (2 n  = 4 x) level. We aim to characterize evolutionary and phylogeographical patterns in this taxon and shed light on the geographical differentiation of apomicts and sexuals. Ultimately, we aim to evaluate the importance of phylogeography in the formation of geographical parthenogenesis. Methods Rubus ser. Glandulosi was sampled across its Eurasian range together with other co-occurring Rubus taxa (587 individuals in total). Double-digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) and modelling of suitable climate were used for evolutionary inferences. Key Results Six ancestral species were identified that contributed to the contemporary gene pool of R. ser. Glandulosi. Sexuals were introgressed from Rubus dolichocarpus and Rubus moschus in West Asia and from Rubus ulmifolius agg. Rubus canescens and Rubus incanescens in Europe, whereas apomicts were characterized by alleles of Rubus subsect. Rubus. Gene flow between sexuals and apomicts was also detected, as was occasional hybridization with other taxa. Conclusions We hypothesize that sexuals survived the last glacial period in several large southern refugia, whereas apomicts were mostly restricted to southern France, whence they quickly recolonized Central and Western Europe. The secondary contact of sexuals and apomicts was probably the principal factor that established geographical parthenogenesis in R. ser. Glandulosi. Sexual populations are not impoverished in genetic diversity along their borderline with apomicts, and maladaptive population genetic processes probably did not shape the geographical patterns. A decrease in atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) is considered an important prerequisite for the onset and intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG). However, how the ocean sequestered missing CO2 during the NHG is still uncertain. Changes in surface productivity and deep ventilation in the Southern Ocean (SO) have been proposed to explain the variations in atmospheric pCO2 over the last eight glacial cycles, but it is unclear whether these mechanisms contributed to the decrease in atmospheric pCO2 during the NHG. Using titanium-normalized contents and mass accumulation rates of biogenic opal and total organic carbon from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 374 Site U1524A, we reconstruct the productivity in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, from 3.3 Ma to 2.4 Ma. The productivity records exhibit a long-term decreasing trend and several distinct phased evolutionary features. Specifically, the local productivity fluctuated dramatically during 3.3–3.0 Ma, decreased gradually during 3.0–2.6 Ma, and remained relatively constant during 2.6–2.4 Ma. By comparing productivity with its potential influences, we infer that the phased and long-term evolutions of productivity were mainly controlled by changes in deep ocean ventilation. Sea ice expansion might have decreased productivity during 3.3–3.0 Ma by light attenuation. Changes in eolian dust input have little effect on productivity. Further analysis revealed no coupling linkage between productivity and atmospheric pCO2, indicating that the productivity in the SO Antarctic Zone (AZ) was not the main factor controlling the atmospheric CO2 decrease during the NHG. To improve our understanding of the role of SO processes in the NHG, further studies should focus on the potential influences of deep ocean ventilation on atmospheric pCO2 in the AZ, and similar studies should also be extended to the sea area in the Subantarctic Zone. In this paper, we present a reconstruction of climate conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum on a karst plateau Snežnik, which lies in Dinaric Mountains (southern Slovenia) and bears evidence of glaciation. The reconstruction merges geomorphological ice limits, classified as either clear or unclear, and a computer modelling approach based on the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM). Based on extensive numerical experiments where we studied the agreements between simulated and geomorphological ice extent, we propose using a combination of a high-resolution precipitation model that accounts for orographic precipitation combined with a simple elevation-based temperature model. The geomorphological ice extent can be simulated with climate to be around 6 °C colder than the modern day and with a lower-than-modern-day amount of precipitation, which matches other state-of-the art climate reconstructions for the era. The results indicate that an orographic precipitation model is essential for the accurate simulation of the study area, with moist southern winds from the nearby Adriatic Sea having a predominant effect on the precipitation patterns. Finally, this study shows that transforming climate conditions towards wetter and warmer or drier and colder does not significantly change the conditions for glacier formation. The glacial‐interglacial cycle of elements and the linkage with biological production is very important. Nonetheless, records on incorporation of elements into diatom frustules are very poor in the Southern Ocean where diatom productivity is very high. As a result, there is a big gap in our understanding of elemental cycles in association with biological production and the controlling mechanisms. Here, we documented concentrations of major, trace, and rare earth elements of diatom frustules in two cores collected from the Southern Ocean since the Last Glacial Maximum to understand changes of incorporation of these elements into diatom frustules and to investigate mechanisms for changing incorporation. We found that there are three types of glacial‐interglacial variation patterns. Most elements showed increased (decreased) concentrations during the glacial period (interglacial) with decreased (increased) diatom production in the surface water following the variation pattern of magnetic susceptibility, whereas P, Ge, and Sb showed the opposite trend following the variation pattern of biogenic opal. Li, Ni, Ag, W, U, and I showed no clear glacial‐interglacial variation pattern. These different variation patterns imply that elemental incorporation into diatom frustules are also different according to elements. Our results revealed that biologically mediated removal of most elements from surface water to deep‐sea is comparable between glacial (low diatom production with high elements assimilation) and interglacial (high diatom production with low elements assimilation) periods in the Southern Ocean. However, more removal of P, Sb, and Ge in the surface water by diatoms occurs during interglacial periods in the Southern Ocean. High‐relief glacial valleys shape the modern topography of the Southern Patagonian Andes, but their formation remains poorly understood. Two Miocene plutonic complexes in the Andean retroarc, the Fitz Roy (49°S) and Torres del Paine (51°S) massifs, were emplaced between 16.9–16.4 Ma and 12.6–12.4 Ma, respectively. Subduction of oceanic ridge segments initiated ca. 16 Ma at 54°S, leading to northward opening of a slab window with associated mantle upwelling. The onset of major glaciations caused drastic topographic changes since ca. 7 Ma. To constrain the respective contributions of tectonic‐mantle dynamics and fluvio‐glacial erosion to rock exhumation and landscape evolution, we perform inverse thermal modeling of a new data set of zircon and apatite (U‐Th)/He from the two massifs, complemented by apatite 4He/3He data for Torres del Paine. Our results show rapid rock exhumation recorded only in the Fitz Roy massif between 10 and 8 Ma, which we ascribe to local mantle upwelling forcing surface uplift and intensified erosion around 49°S. Both massifs record a pulse of rock exhumation between 7 and 4 Ma, which we interpret as enhanced erosion during the beginning of Patagonian glaciations. After a period of erosional and tectonic quiescence in the Pliocene, increased rock exhumation since 3–2 Ma is interpreted as the result of alpine glacial valley carving promoted by reinforced glacial‐interglacial cycles. This study highlights that glacial erosion was the main driver to rock exhumation in the Patagonian retroarc since 7 Ma, but that mantle upwelling might be a driving force to rock exhumation as well. We present a new data set of low‐temperature thermochronometers for rocks of the Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine mountains in the Southern Patagonian Andes. Fast rock cooling can be forced by intensified surface erosion, and/or tectonic and mantle activity. An episode of fast cooling between 10 and 8 Ma was identified in the Fitz Roy mountains, and mantle upwelling forcing surface uplift, combined with high fluvial erosion may have caused fast rock exhumation. A regional episode of fast rock cooling between 7 and 4 Ma causing 1–3 km of exhumation in the Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine is coincident with the onset of Patagonian glaciations, which would have enhanced erosion and, thus, rock exhumation. An episode of fast rock cooling in the Quaternary is recorded in Torres del Paine rocks, interpreted as enhanced fluvio‐glacial erosion during the Plio‐Pleistocene climate transition toward faster glacial/interglacial cycles. Therefore, we were able to quantify separately the effects of tectonics and climate changes on rock exhumation, what is usually difficult due to simultaneously occurring processes. We investigated population genetics of the native tree species Acer velutinum Boiss., Fagus orientalis Lipsky, and Quercus castaneifolia C.A. Mey. in the Hyrcanian forests of northern Iran and also F. orientalis populations in the Euro-Siberian and Colchic subregions of northern Türkiye. We used the double-digest RADseq method and genotyped 90 populations and 1,589 individuals across the distribution range of the species. Genome-wide SNPs from 28 populations of A. velutinum, 32 populations of F. orientalis, and 30 Q. castaneifolia revealed higher genetic differentiation among A. velutinum populations than among F. orientalis and Q. castaneifolia. The global FST value was lowest for F. orientalis populations and highest for A. velutinum populations, while the global FIS value was negative for A. velutinum. Demographic history analysis revealed a bottleneck during the last glacial period (11,500—115,000 Kya) for the A. velutinum populations with reduced effective population size (Ne). All three species show multiple bottlenecks and reduced Ne during the Quaternary. Pronounced genetic divergence among A. velutinum populations in the Hyrcanian forests compared to the other two species suggests cryptic speciation. Conversely, F. orientalis and Q. castaneifolia populations showed low levels of genetic structure, suggesting that species-specific factors, such as pollen production and pollination efficiency, may have influenced the genetic patterns within these species in similar environments. The nucleotide diversity of F. orientalis populations in Iran is negatively correlated with altitude (p = 0.046). In contrast, A. velutinum populations show a significant correlation between nucleotide diversity and longitude (p = 0.008). This paper presents sedimentological and paleobotanical studies of the deposits from Last Glaciation (Late Nemunas, Late Weichselian) in the middle reaches of the River Nemunas in southern Lithuania. Spores, pollen, and other palynomorphs in the intercalated sediments between the diamicton (glacial till) beds were analyzed, and the paleogeographical and paleoclimatic conditions of their sedimentation were assessed using the modern analog technique (MAT). The two till layers from the Last Glaciation, characterized by significant differences in their composition, testify to a difference in glacier movement paths in the region. The continuous sedimentation process between glacial tills provides evidence of global climate changes during the Last Glaciation and the restructuring of glacial lobes during deglaciation in the southeastern part of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. The sedimentation process and vegetation composition bear witness to an open landscape of steppe-tundra, scattered wooded areas, and the emergence of thermophilic vegetation afterward, suggesting increased annual temperatures and higher humidity. The available data enable the identification of the Balbieriškis interstage period within the Late Nemunas Glaciation (Upper Nemunas Formation) between the Grūda and Baltija stages (Grūda and Baltija subformations) in the regional Quaternary stratigraphic scheme. A complete, fluvial stratigraphic record for the last glacial period of the Western Andes in Peru is not available due to preservation issues and spatial variability in sedimentation. Deposits are typically restricted to incomplete records of fluvial terraces or localised occurrences of alluvial fans and landslides. These landforms are thought to have formed under a regime of climate cyclicity controlling increases in precipitation. Because of the fragmented preservation of these deposits, as well as dating uncertainties, it remains unclear if orbital climate cycles, such as the precession cycle, or suborbital cycles, such as the wet Heinrich events, are driving Andean sedimentation. In this paper, we try to answer this question through a sedimentological–stratigraphical analysis of a much more complete sedimentary sequence than usually found in the region. We present the results of a grain size analysis of 5000 clasts and 13 new luminescence ages of a 52‐m‐long, stratigraphic section of the Lima fluvial fan in Peru. Bayesian age–depth modelling resulted in a robust chronostratigraphic framework and derived sedimentation rates. The stratigraphic record registered sedimentation from 121.7 ± 4 to 6.3−1.6+1.5 ka. Three major sedimentation periods occurred between 121.7 to 110−5+4, 87 ± 1 to 67−3+2, and 31−3+4 to 6.3−1.6+1.5 ka. These periods registered various unconformities and coarsening–fining upward sequences which chronologically correlate to suborbital pluvial periods, recognised from speleothems and lake records, that drove fluvial deposition. They also correlate with the timing of other recognised sedimentation events throughout the Western Andes. Marine regression resulted in fan progradation and not in incision. The Lima fan stratigraphy represents therefore the most complete, last glacial fluvial record for the Peruvian Western Andes to date and it highlights the potential of fluvial fans as recorders of suborbital climate variability. Late Pleistocene glacial terminations are caused by rising atmospheric CO2 occurring in response to atmospheric and ocean circulation changes induced by increased discharge from Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. While climate records place glacial terminations coincident with decreasing orbital precession, it remains unclear why a specific precession minimum causes a termination. We compare the orbital and ice volume configuration at each precession minima over the last million years to demonstrate that eccentricity, through its control on precession amplitude, period and coherence with obliquity, along with ice sheet size, determine whether a given precession minimum will cause a termination. We also demonstrate how eccentricity controls obliquity maxima and precession minima coherence, varying the duration of glaciations. Glaciations lasting ∼100 thousand years are controlled by Earth's eccentricity cycle of the same period, while the shortest (20–40 ka) and longest (155 ka) occupy the maxima and minimums of the 400 thousand year eccentricity cycle. Plain Language Summary: The Milankovitch theory of the ice ages predicts that the growth and collapse of Pleistocene ice sheets is paced by the cycles in high latitude solar insolation that accompany variations in Earth's orbital motion. The orbital modes that dominate frequencies of incoming solar radiation are obliquity and precession, which operate at periodicities of approximately 40 and 20 thousand years, respectively. The dominant frequency at which ice sheets grow and collapse over the last million years is, however, approximately 100 thousand years, a closer match to eccentricity, an orbital period near absent from past solar radiation. Through a comparison between Earth's orbital configuration and an approximation of past global ice volume, we identify that the precession minima that trigger ice sheet collapse occur at distinct configuration of eccentricity and ice sheet size. In most cases terminations occur when precession minima align with obliquity maxima. We find that this coherence is influenced by the duration of precession cycles, which is in turn controlled by eccentricity. From these observations, we conclude that orbital eccentricity, through its control on both the amplitude and period of precession, paces the timing of glacial terminations and the size of Late Pleistocene ice sheets. The last glacial inception (LGI) marks the transition from the interglacial warm climate to the glacial period with extensive Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and colder climate. This transition is initiated by decreasing boreal summer insolation but requires positive feedbacks to stimulate the appearance of perennial snow. We perform simulations of LGI with climate model AWI‐ESM‐2.1, forced by the astronomical and greenhouse gas forcing of 115,000 years before present. To compare with the preindustrial (PI) simulation, we use a consistent definition of the seasons during the LGI and the PI and evaluate model output on an angular astronomical calendar. Our study reveals a prominent role of the sea‐ice albedo feedback to amplify the delayed climate signal at polar latitudes. Through a radiative budget analysis, we examine that the ice‐albedo feedback exceeds the shortwave radiative forcing, contributing to the cooling and high latitude snow built‐up during LGI. Molecular and fossil evidence suggests that complex eukaryotic multicellularity evolved during the late Neoproterozoic era, coincident with Snowball Earth glaciations, where ice sheets covered most of the globe. During this period, environmental conditions—such as seawater temperature and the availability of photosynthetically active light in the oceans–likely changed dramatically. Such changes would have had significant effects on both resource availability and optimal phenotypes. Here, we construct and apply mechanistic models to explore (i) how environmental changes during Snowball Earth and biophysical constraints generated selective pressures, and (ii) how these pressures may have had differential effects on organisms with different forms of biological organization. By testing a series of alternative—and commonly debated—hypotheses, we demonstrate how multicellularity was likely acquired differently in eukaryotes and prokaryotes owing to selective differences on their size due to the biophysical and metabolic regimes they inhabit: decreasing temperatures and resource availability instigated by the onset of glaciations generated selective pressures towards smaller sizes in organisms in the diffusive regime and towards larger sizes in motile heterotrophs. These results suggest that changing environmental conditions during Snowball Earth glaciations gave multicellular eukaryotes an evolutionary advantage, paving the way for the complex multicellular lineages that followed. Müllerian mimicry was proposed to be an example of a coevolved mutualism promoted by population isolation in glacial refugia. This, however, has not been well supported in butterfly models. Here, we use genomic data to test this theory while examining the population genetics behind mimetic diversification in a pair of co-mimetic bumble bees, Bombus breviceps Smith and Bombus trifasciatus Smith. In both lineages, populations were structured by geography but not as much by color pattern, suggesting sharing of color alleles across regions of restricted gene flow and formation of mimicry complexes in the absence of genetic differentiation. Demographic analyses showed mismatches between historical effective population size changes and glacial cycles, and niche modeling revealed only mild habitat retraction during glaciation. Moreover, mimetic subpopulations of the same color form in the two lineages only in some cases exhibit similar population history and genetic divergence. Piedmont glaciers (lobes), typically found in high latitudes and large mountainous regions, extend from ice sheets and ice caps to lower altitudes. However, they can also occur, although less commonly, on mid‐latitude mountains. When these fan‐like glaciers retreat, they leave behind hummocky moraines scattered in a chaotic pattern. In this study, we have mapped one of these mid‐latitude sites and established a Terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) glacial chronology on Mount Davraz, namely Davraz hummocky moraine field (37°46′00″N, 30°43′15″E). Our findings indicate that the glaciers in this area started receding from the early local Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) period (21.8 ± 2.4 ka) to the early Late‐glacial period (17.7 ± 2.2 ka), and eventually disappearing. The deglaciation of the Mt. Davraz palaeoglacier matches nearby mountains, supported by southerly winds as significant for regional glaciation. Our discoveries reveal a robust connection between southerly winds and nearby glaciation, contributing to our understanding of how climate influences glaciers. They differ in the molluscan second intermediate hosts, distribution ranges, and life cycles patterns. The type I life cycle includes two generations of parthenogenetic metacercariae, followed by development of metacercariae which are invasive for the definitive host. In the type II life cycle, the number of generations of parthenogenetic metacercariae is unlimited, and they can also produce cercariae. These cercariae emerge into the environment and can infect new individuals of the second intermediate host. We conclude that the type I life cycle is a derived option that has evolved as a better fit to transmission in the unstable conditions in the intertidal zone. Another evolutionary trend in Parvatrema is transition from inhabiting the extrapallial space of the gastropod second intermediate host to endoparasitism in its mantle and internal organs. rDNA sequence analysis highlighted that Parvatrema spp. with parthenogenetic metacercariae form a monophyletic clade and suggested the Pacific origin of the group, with two transfers to the North Atlantic and colonisation of new second intermediate host species. Apparently the group formed in the late Pliocene-Pleistocene and diversified as a result of recurrent isolation in inshore refugia during glacial periods. We argue that parthenogenetic metacercariae in Parvatrema may serve as a model for early digenean evolution, demonstrating the first steps of adopting the molluscan first intermediate host and becoming tissue parasites. The drained shear strength of overconsolidated glaciolacustrine clays in the Seattle area can range from the overconsolidated peak to residual strength depending on its geologic history, depth, softening, prior shear displacements, size of excavation, and application, e.g., long-term cut slope versus short-term braced excavation. An inverse analysis of slope failures shows the mobilized shear strength for cut slopes in the overconsolidated and sparsely jointed Qvgl glaciolacustrine clay ranges from the fully softened strength to in between fully softened and residual strength depending on the level of jointing, prior shear displacements, assumed piezometric levels, and Atterberg limits used in the analysis. Conversely, an inverse analysis of a 2011 slope failure in the frequently jointed and random slickensided overconsolidated Qpgl glaciolacustrine clay shows the mobilized shear strength for this deposit near residual to in between residual and fully softened strengths because of repeated glaciation cycles, softening, and local shear displacements due to glacial bulldozing, solifluction, and high lateral stresses.
