In any space mission, maintaining subsystems temperature within the allowed limits is a difficult challenge. Parts exposed to the Sun need to be cooled because temperatures rise extremely high, while parts not directly exposed to the Sun need to be heated, because temperatures can drop dramatically. The vacuum does not conduct heat, so the only way to transfer energy is through electromagnetic radiation, generated by the thermal motion of particles in matter. Operating on a planet surface allow convective dissipation and, to a lesser extent, conductive heat dissipation. Furthermore, Mars’ thin atmosphere mitigates the strong temperature gradients that would occur in a vacuum. Nevertheless, external parts of the rover are exposed to temperature ranging between – 123°C - +40°C. In this paper, the thermal control system of NASA’s Curiosity rover will be presented, analyzing the challenges of maintaining suitable operating conditions in Martian environment and the solutions adopted to allow safe operations.

In the design and development phases of electro-hydraulic actuators (EHAs) used for aircraft flight controls, it is often necessary to carry out accurate and high-fidelity fluid dynamics simulations to evaluate the system behaviour within its entire operating range and, if necessary, investigate its most critical issues. These high-fidelity simulations (nowadays achievable with different techniques and commercial software) generally become pretty expensive from a computational perspective. Therefore, especially in the preliminary design phases or implementing system health monitoring algorithms (in real-time), the need to adopt simplified models emerges definitely (albeit capable of guaranteeing the appropriate level of detail and accuracy). These simplified models are also essential for developing effective and reliable model-based prognostic strategies capable of performing early health assessments of EHA valves. This work proposes a new lumped-parameters simplified numerical model, which, despite having a very compact formulation and reduced computational costs, simulates the internal fluid dynamics of the valve, overcoming some critical issues typical of other models available in the literature. It evaluates valve performance as a function of spool position and environmental conditions (e.g. supply pressure), better-assessing flow rate feedback, internal leakages, and other operating conditions (e.g. spool fine adjustment, pressure supply variable, overpressure, or water hammer). The performance of this numerical model is evaluated comparing with other simplified models published in the literature. Moreover, it is validated with a high-fidelity digital twin that simulates the behaviour of the valve, taking into account the geometry of the spool, the properties of the hydraulic fluid, and the local internal fluid-dynamics (laminar or turbulent regime, cavitation, etc.).

Background Data on the effect of oral bisphosphonates (BPs) on risk of upper gastrointestinal complications (UGIC) are conflicting. We conducted a large population-based study from a network of Italian healthcare utilization databases aimed to assess the UGIC risk associated with use of BPs in the setting of secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures. Methods A nested case–control study was carried out within a cohort of 68,970 patients aged 45 years or older, who have been hospitalized for osteoporotic fracture from 2003 until 2005. Cases were the 804 patients who experienced hospitalization for UGIC until 2007. Up to 20 controls were randomly selected for each case. Conditional logistic regression model was used to estimate odds ratio (OR) associated with current and past use of BPs (i.e. for drug dispensation within 30 days and over 31 days prior the outcome onset, respectively) after adjusting for several covariates. Results Compared with patients who did not use BPs, current and past users had OR (and 95% confidence interval) of 0.86 (0.60 to 1.22) and 1.07 (0.80 to 1.44) respectively. There was no difference in the ORs estimated according with BPs type (alendronate or risedronate) and regimen (daily or weekly), nor with co-therapies and comorbidities. Conclusions Further evidence that BPs dispensed for secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures are not associated with increased risk of severe gastrointestinal complications is supplied from this study. Further research is required to clarify the role BPs and other drugs of co-medication in inducing UGIC.

Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) and piceatannol (3,4,3',5'-tetrahydroxy-trans-stilbene) are phytoalexins present in red grapes and wines. In vitro studies have revealed that piceatannol blocks LMP2A, a viral protein-tyrosine kinase implicated in leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and other diseases associated with the Epstein-Barr virus, and has an antimelanoma effect on human melanoma cells. Resveratrol has several beneficial effects on human health, such as anticancer, cardioprotection, antioxidant, inhibition of platelet aggregation and anti-inflammatory activity. In this investigation, the collisional behaviour of deprotonated resveratrol and piceatannol obtained under electrospray conditions is described. The mechanisms involved in the fragmentation pattern of [M-H](-) species of the two compounds were investigated by performing MSn experiments, deuterium labelling and accurate mass measurements. This paper is focused on the long-term simulation part of a study, funded by the European Space Agency, aimed at assessing the net effect of using sails for passive deorbiting at the end of life on the future debris population around the Earth. The aim of the "environmental feedback" task of the study was to perform simulations on the overall debris population considering the cases in which solar and drag sails are used for deorbiting. This is done in three steps, first the requirements in terms of sail area for deorbiting in a desired time are found, and then these requirements are compared with the current capabilities of sail technology. As a third step the revised sail area, considering technological constraints, are used for each spacecraft employing a sail in the debris simulation in SDM. The paper discusses the results of the long-term simulations.

Solar and drag sailing have been proposed as passive end-of-life deorbiting methods, and technological demonstrators are under development. For orbit above 800 km altitude solar radiation pressure can be exploited for increasing the orbit eccentricity until the perigee enters the drag region until final re-entry. The performance of the sailing strategy is determined by four parameters: the required effective area-to-mass ratio to deorbit the spacecraft, which determine the sail size given the satellite's mass, the time to deorbit and the augmented collision probability caused on and by the sail through its passage in the Low Earth Orbit protected region densely populated by space debris. In this paper we assess the sail dimension with respect to the augmented collision risk depending on the sail area and the deorbiting time.
