Abstract: International audience; This work addresses the distributed consensus tracking problem for an extended class of high-order nonlinear multiagent networks with guaranteed performances over a directed graph. The adding one power integrator methodology is skillfully incorporated into the distributed protocol so as to tackle high powers in a distributed fashion. The distinguishing feature of the proposed design, besides guaranteeing closed-loop stability, is that some transient-state and steady-state metrics (e.g., maximum overshoot and convergence rate) can be preselected a priori by devising a novel performance function. More precisely, as opposed to conventional prescribed performance functions, a new asymmetry local tracking error-transformed variable is designed to circumvent the singularity problem and alleviate the computational burden caused by the conventional transformation function and its inverse function, and to solve the nondifferentiability issue that exists in most existing designs. Furthermore, the consensus tracking error is shown to converge to a residual set, whose size can be adjusted as small as desired through selecting proper parameters, while ensuring closed-loop stability and preassigned performances. One numerical and one practical example have been conducted to highlight the superiority of the proposed strategy.

Abstract: Over the past 2 to 3 decades, Chinese forests are estimated to act as a large carbon sink, yet the magnitude and spatial patterns of this sink differ considerably among studies. Using 3 microwave (L- and X-band vegetation optical depth [VOD]) and 3 optical (normalized difference vegetation index, leaf area index, and tree cover) remote-sensing vegetation products, this study compared the estimated live woody aboveground biomass carbon (AGC) dynamics over China between 2013 and 2019. Our results showed that tree cover has the highest spatial consistency with 3 published AGC maps (mean correlation value R = 0.84), followed by L-VOD ( R = 0.83), which outperform the other VODs. An AGC estimation model was proposed to combine all indices to estimate the annual AGC dynamics in China during 2013 to 2019. The performance of the AGC estimation model was good (root mean square error = 0.05 Pg C and R 2 = 0.90 with a mean relative uncertainty of 9.8% at pixel scale [0.25°]). Results of the AGC estimation model showed that carbon uptake by the forests in China was about +0.17 Pg C year −1 from 2013 to 2019. At the regional level, provinces in southwest China including Guizhou (+22.35 Tg C year −1 ), Sichuan (+14.49 Tg C year −1 ), and Hunan (+11.42 Tg C year −1 ) provinces had the highest carbon sink rates during 2013 to 2019. Most of the carbon-sink regions have been afforested recently, implying that afforestation and ecological engineering projects have been effective means for carbon sequestration in these regions.

Abstract: International audience; Traditional hyperspectral (HS) pansharpening aims at fusing a HS image with its panchromatic (PAN) counterpart, to bring the spatial resolution of the HS image to that of the PAN image. However, in many practical applications, arbitrary resolution HS (ARHS) pansharpening is required, where the HS and PAN images need to be integrated to generate a pansharpened HS image with arbitrary resolution (usually higher than that of the PAN image). Such an innovative task brings forth new challenges for the pansharpening technique, mainly including how to reconstruct HS images beyond the training scale and how to guarantee spectral fidelity at any spatial resolutions. To tackle the challenges, we present a novel convolutional neural network (CNN)-based method for ARHS pansharpening called ARHS-CNN. It is based on a two-step relay optimization process, which is associated with a multilevel enhancement subnetwork and a rescaling subnetwork. With a careful design following the thread, our ARHS-CNN is able to pansharpen HS images to any spatial resolutions using just a single CNN model trained on a limited number of scales while meantime to keep spectral fidelity at those resolutions, which wins an obvious advantage over traditional pansharpening methods. Experimental results obtained on several datasets verify the excellent performance of our ARHS-CNN method.

Abstract: International audience; The combination of (thermo)responsive polymers with supramolecular chemistry recently allowed the development of adaptative materials based on the reversible regulation of host-guest complexation. The properties of these artificial systems rely on their synthetic design, which requires a perfect understanding of the mechanisms triggering the thermo-induced decomplexation. Despite recent progress, the origins of this phenomenon are still not fully understood. To investigate the effect of phase separation mechanism and thermodynamics on the host-guest (de)complexation behavior, different naphthalene-functionalized (guest) thermoresponsive polymers, including lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymers, were prepared. The hostguest complexation of the polymers with cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (Blue Box) was investigated in water at different temperatures. Host-guest complexation was lost upon heating-induced hydrophobic phase separation of complexed guest-functionalized LCST-polymers, while, in contrast, the host-guest complex was retained upon cooling-induced hydrogen bond-driven phase separation of a complexed guest-functionalized UCST polymer. This comparative analysis showed that the mechanism behind the thermoresponsive polymer phase separation is a key factor that dominates the host-guest (de)complexation.

Abstract: International audience; Occlusion effect, an inherent problem of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) measurements, limits the potential of TLS data in tree attribute estimation. Multiple scans seek to mitigate this effect to provide enhanced scan completeness. However, the numbers and locations of the scans (i.e., the scan design) are usually determined via a subjective assessment of the tree density, spatial patterns of trees, and attributes to be derived. These could cause suboptimal scan completeness and limit tree attribute estimation. This study proposed an iterative-mode scan design to minimize the occlusion effect. First, we introduced a PoTo index based on visibility analysis to evaluate how many trees can be scanned from a location and to select effective candidates for the optimal TLS location. Second, we introduced a cumulative degree of ring closure (CDRC) to quantify the scan completeness for each candidate and determine the optimal TLS location. The TLS data sets of virtual forests with field-measured and synthetic plot parameter settings were simulated according to iterative- and regular-mode designs by using a Heidelberg light detection and ranging (LiDAR) Operations Simulator (HELIOS). The results demonstrated that an iterative-mode design can improve the scan completeness of trees compared to the regular-mode design. The tree attribute (diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height, stem curve, and crown volume) estimates of the iterative-mode design were less erroneous than those of the regular-mode design (e.g., the root-mean-square error (RMSE) could decrease the stem curve estimation by 38 and the crown volume estimation by 15). This study suggests that the iterative-mode design can obtain an improved quality of the TLS data, especially for dense stands.

Abstract: International audience; The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 continues to have a major impact on healthcare and social systems throughout the world. As the clinical and epidemiological features of COVID-19 have many parallels with influenza, it is important to ensure optimal management of both respiratory diseases as we anticipate their continued co-circulation. In particular, there is a need to ensure that effective surveillance and diagnostic capacities are in place to monitor these and other respiratory viruses, as this will underpin decisions on the appropriate clinical management of the respective diseases. As such, we propose a series of key recommendations for stakeholders, public health authorities, primary care physicians and surveillance bodies that will help mitigate the combined risks of concurrent influenza epidemics and the COVID-19 pandemic. We advocate the judicious use of influenza vaccines and antivirals, particularly among groups at high risk of complications, with healthcare workers also considered a priority for vaccination. It is likely that the increased use of emerging technologies such as telemedicine and contact tracing will permanently change our approach to managing infectious disease. The use of these technologies, alongside existing pharmaceutical strategies, will ensure that we achieve a holistic approach to the global public health measures needed to deal with the combined threat of influenza and COVID-19. Ensuring that this approach is optimal will be key as we move from a reactive pandemic response towards preparing for the long-term management of the remarkable clinical burden associated with these respiratory pathogens.

Abstract: International audience; Precise structural information collected from plots is significant in the management of and decision-making regarding forest resources. Currently, laser scanning is widely used in forestry inventories to acquire three-dimensional (3D) structural information. There are three main data-acquisition modes in ground-based forest measurements: single-scan terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), multi-scan TLS and multi-single-scan TLS. Nevertheless, each of these modes causes specific difficulties for forest measurements. Due to occlusion effects, the single-scan TLS mode provides scans for only one side of the tree. The multi-scan TLS mode overcomes occlusion problems, however, at the cost of longer acquisition times, more human labor and more effort in data preprocessing. The multi-single-scan TLS mode decreases the workload and occlusion effects but lacks the complete 3D reconstruction of forests. These problems in TLS methods are largely avoided with mobile laser scanning (MLS); however, the geometrical peculiarity of forests (e.g., similarity between tree shapes, placements, and occlusion) complicates the motion estimation and reduces mapping accuracy.Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method combining single-scan TLS and MLS for forest 3D data acquisition. We use single-scan TLS data as a reference, onto which we register MLS point clouds, so they fill in the omission of the single-scan TLS data. To register MLS point clouds on the reference, we extract virtual feature points that are sampling the centerlines of tree stems and propose a new optimization-based registration framework. In contrast to previous MLS-based studies, the proposed method sufficiently exploits the natural geometric characteristics of trees. We demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness, and accuracy of the proposed method on three datasets, from which we extract structural information. The experimental results show that the omission of tree stem data caused by one scan can be compensated for by the MLS data, and the time of the field measurement is much less than that of the multi-scan TLS mode. In addition, single-scan TLS data provide strong global constraints for MLS-based forest mapping, which allows low mapping errors to be achieved, e.g., less than 2.0 cm mean errors in both the horizontal and vertical directions.

Abstract: International audience; Calix[4]arenes have the ability to encapsulate biomimetic guests, offering interesting opportunities to explore their molecular recognition, very close to biological scenarios. In this study, p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (C4 A) anions and hydrated alkali cations have been used for the in situ recognition of cationic 1,ω-diammonium-alkanes and 1,ω-amino-acids of variable lengths. NMR spectroscopy illustrates that these systems are stable in aqueous solution and the interaction process involves several binding states or stabilized conformations within the C4 A anion, depending of the nature of the guest. DOSY experiments showed that monomeric 1 : 1 host-guest species are present, while the cation does not influence their selfassembly in solution. The folded conformations observed in the solid-state X-ray single-crystal structures shed light on the constitutional adaptivity of flexible chains to environmental factors. Futhermore, a comprehensive screening of 30 single crystal structures helped to understand the in situ conformational fixation and accurate determination of the folded structures of the confined guest molecules, with a compression up to 40 % compared with their linear conformations.

Abstract: Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) planning is showing its power in real-world planning. Although domain experts have partial hierarchical domain knowledge, it is time-consuming to specify all HTN methods, leaving them incomplete. On the other hand, traditional HTN learning approaches focus only on declarative goals, omitting the hierarchical domain knowledge. In this paper, we propose a novel learning framework to refine HTN methods via task insertion with completely preserving the original methods. As it is difficult to identify incomplete methods without designating declarative goals for compound tasks, we introduce the notion of prioritized preference to capture the incompleteness possibility of methods. Specifically, the framework first computes the preferred completion profile w.r.t. the prioritized preference to refine the incomplete methods. Then it finds the minimal set of refined methods via a method substitution operation. Abstract: International audience; The development of cost-effective, high-performance, and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting remains highly desirable yet quite challenging. Here, by selecting appreciate precursors of dopamine and a Co-containing metal-organic framework of ZIF-67, we subtly couple their reaction processes to develop a facile approach for the synthesis of a hollow CoP nanostructure with N-doped carbon skeleton (H-CoP@NC). Benefiting from the highly porous nanostructure and conductive carbon skeleton, H-CoP@NC is capable of working as highly active and durable bifunctional electrocatalyst for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction. When further used as the electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, H-CoP@NC delivers excellent activity (cell voltage of 1.72 V at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2)), close to that of the noble-metal-based benchmark catalyst couple of Pt/C parallel to RuO2. Our work thus provides new insights into the development of transitional metal phosphides based hollow hybrid nanostructures, particularly those with multiple functionalities in sustainable energy conversion technologies and systems.

Abstract: International audience; Polymorphism commonly exists in the preparation of cocrystals and has attracted widespread attention from both the pharmaceutical industry and academia. However, few studies have examined how to discover polymorphic cocrystals and their potential formation mechanism. In this study, we report the novel discovery of salicylic acid: 3-nitrobenzamide (SA-3NBZ) polymorphic cocrystals by thermal methods. The formation mechanism is elucidated based on theoretical calculations. SA-3NBZ polymorphic cocrystals with molar ratio of 1:1 and 2:2 were discovered using the combination of differential scanning calorimetry and hot stage microscopy. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed this discovery. Density functional theory calculations corrected with dispersion were conducted to illustrate the energetic stabilization of SA polymorphic cocrystals. Compared with the starting materials, formation of the cocrystals at 1:1 and 2:2 present a weak stabilization with overall energy reduction of −0.01 and −0.05 eV/molecule, respectively. The calculated noncovalent interactions index further suggests that intralayer hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces contribute to these weak interactions. The density functional theory calculations are in good agreement with the X-ray diffraction data. Hence, thermal analysis is a simple and reliable method to discover polymorphic cocrystals.

Abstract: Hybrids between diverged lineages contain novel genetic combinations but an impaired meiosis often makes them evolutionary dead ends. Here, we explore to what extent an aborted meiosis followed by a return-to-growth (RTG) promotes recombination across a panel of 20 Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. paradoxus diploid hybrids with different genomic structures and levels of sterility. Genome analyses of 275 clones reveal that RTG promotes recombination and generates extensive regions of loss-of-heterozygosity in sterile hybrids with either a defective meiosis or a heavily rearranged karyotype, whereas RTG recombination is reduced by high sequence divergence between parental subgenomes. The RTG recombination preferentially arises in regions with low local heterozygosity and near meiotic recombination hotspots. The loss-of-heterozygosity has a profound impact on sexual and asexual fitness, and enables genetic mapping of phenotypic differences in sterile lineages where linkage analysis would fail. We propose that RTG gives sterile yeast hybrids access to a natural route for genome recombination and adaptation., Hybrids are often considered evolutionary dead ends because they do not generate viable offspring. Here, the authors show that sterile yeast hybrids generate genetic diversity through meiotic-like recombination by aborting meiosis and return to asexual growth.

Abstract: The Lagrangian and Eulerian surface current signatures of a low-mode internal tide propagating through a turbulent balanced flow are compared in idealized numerical simulations. Lagrangian and Eulerian total (i.e., coherent plus incoherent) tidal amplitudes are found to be similar. Compared to Eulerian diagnostics, the Lagrangian tidal signal is more incoherent with comparable or smaller incoherence time scales and larger incoherent amplitudes. The larger level of incoherence in Lagrangian data is proposed to result from the deformation of an Eulerian internal tide signal induced by drifter displacements. Based on the latter hypothesis, a theoretical model successfully predicts Lagrangian autocovariances by relating Lagrangian and Eulerian autocovariances and the properties of the internal tides and jet. These results have implications for the separation of balanced flow and internal tides signals in the sea level data collected by the future Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission.

Abstract: International audience; The efficiency of zero-valent iron (Fe-0)for the degradation of contaminants in water or soil can be highly reduced by side reactions with oxygen or water. This work was conducted to test whether this drawback can be effectively suppressed by the carbonation of Fe-0 with pyrolyzed biomass, which forms a Fe3C composite. The composite Fe3C was characterized and its reactivity and stability were assessed in batch tests with methyl orange (MO) as a model pollutant. The results indicated that the removal rate of MO on Fe3C composite was higher than that of Fe-0 (7.587 mg/(g.min) vs. 4.306 mg/(g.min)) at pH 4, where the degradation mechanism was confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. More importantly, the produced iron oxide in the Fe3C composite was highly suppressed. Regeneration studies showed that after three times of cycling, the removal efficiency of MO on Fe3C composite was kept to 99.42%, but Fe-0 almost lost its reactivity. In situ chemical reduction of a colorimetric redox probe (indigo-5, 5'-disulfonate, I2S) quantitatively demonstrated that Fe3C composite has the reduction kinetics of I2S obviously slower than Fe-0, indicating that Fe3C composite improved the stability of incorporated Fe-0 to resist the side oxidation.

Abstract: Aims: Dicranopteris linearis is a fern that accumulates unusually high concentrations (up to 0.3% dry weight) of rare earth elements (REEs) in China. Previously, we reported that D. linearis accumulates high concentrations of aluminium (Al) and silicon (Si) in the fronds, but the interactions between these elements and REEs were unknown. Methods: In this study, a range of analytical techniques, including chemical extractions, Scanning-Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were used to study the association of REEs with Al and Si. Results: The results show that D. linearis accumulates high concentrations of REEs (up to 3830 mg kg−1), Al (up to 9660 mg kg−1) and Si (up to 20,300 mg kg−1), with concentrations increasing with age and frond order of pinna. The extraction patterns suggest the existence of REEs-Si and Al-Si complexes. The SEM-EDS analysis confirmed the existence of phytoliths (Al) deposits in the protoplast and apoplast of the pinna cells. The upper epidermis of the pinnule and the pericycle of the midvein are more concentrated in phytoliths (Al) particles. The LA-ICP-MS analysis revealed that REEs and Al are preferentially compartmentalized within bio-inactive tissues of the pinnules, e.g. necrotic tissues (REEs) and in the margins (Al). Conclusions: Co-deposition of Si with REEs and Al may be a mechanism for dealing with the high concentrations of REEs and Al in D. linearis fronds.

Abstract: We apply the regional chemistry-transport model WRF-Chem to investigate the air pollution characteristics in three Chinese metropolitan areas (Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou) and assess the model performance in wintertime (January 2010) and summertime (July 2010) conditions. Three simulations utilizing the HTAPv2, REASv2 and MACCity anthropogenic emission inventories are conducted and compared with satellite and ground-based measurements to assess the sensitivity of the model predictions to anthropogenic emissions. Model-predicted surface meteorological fields are overall in good agreement with surface observations. However, the model tends to overestimate maximum surface wind speed, a feature also found in previous WRF-Chem modelling studies. Large discrepancies between the three emission inventories are found, specifically in the spatial distribution and the magnitude of the emissions (e.g. over 98%, 86% and 85% differences in some regions for carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NO) and organic carbon (OC) emissions, respectively). As a result, we find large differences between the simulations. When compared to satellite and surface observations, the HTAPv2-and REASv2-based simulations better reproduce the magnitude and spatial patterns of CO total columns and NO2 tropospheric columns derived from MOPITTv6 and GOME2 satellite observations, respectively. The simulations satisfactorily reproduce the air pollution characteristics in January 2010 as observed at surface monitoring stations in Beijing and Shanghai. The HTAPv2-based simulation better captures the pollution episode that occurred in Beijing in mid-January 2010, which is found to be related to a combination of different meteorological factors that led to the build-up of pollution. The high photochemical activity and convective turbulence in July 2010, in addition to differences in the emissions used, led to more pronounced differences between the simulations and lower statistical skills in particular for trace gases. This study shows that a considerable part of uncertainties in air quality model predictions for China can be attributed to uncertainties in current anthropogenic emission inventories. It highlights the need for more accurate and highly resolved emissions in order to improve the accuracy of model predictions. However, this study reveals that in some cases, model-observation discrepancies cannot be attributed only to inaccuracies in the emissions. For example, we found that regardless of the adopted emissions, all of the simulations fail to capture the temporal variability of particulate matter in Guangzhou during January 2010, indicating that factors other than emissions have a considerable influence on the atmospheric composition in this region. This work shows that inaccuracies in the predicted meteorological parameters (e.g. wind speed/direction, relative humidity, etc.) significantly affect the model performance, as found for example in the model predictions for Shanghai for July 2010, which show high and abrupt increases of NOx and particulates due to rapid decreases in wind speed in the model.

Abstract: ObjectiveCampylobacter jejuni produces a genotoxin, cytolethal distending toxin (CDT), which has DNAse activity and causes DNA double-strand breaks. Although C. jejuni infection has been shown to promote intestinal inflammation, the impact of this bacterium on carcinogenesis has never been examined.DesignGerm-free (GF) ApcMin/+mice, fed with 1% dextran sulfate sodium, were used to test tumorigenesis potential of CDT-producing C. jejuni. Cells and enteroids were exposed to bacterial lysates to determine DNA damage capacity via γH2AX immunofluorescence, comet assay and cell cycle assay. To examine the interplay of CDT-producing C. jejuni, gut microbiome and host in tumorigenesis, colonic RNA-sequencing and faecal 16S rDNA sequencing were performed. Rapamycin was administrated to investigate the prevention of CDT-producing C. jejuni-induced tumorigenesis.ResultsGF ApcMin/+mice colonised with human clinical isolate C. jejuni81–176 developed significantly more and larger tumours when compared with uninfected mice. C. jejuni with a mutated cdtB subunit, mutcdtB, attenuated C. jejuni-induced tumorigenesis in vivo and decreased DNA damage response in cells and enteroids. C. jejuni infection induced expression of hundreds of colonic genes, with 22 genes dependent on the presence of cdtB. The C. jejuni-infected group had a significantly different microbial gene expression profile compared with the mutcdtB group as shown by metatranscriptomic data, and different microbial communities as measured by 16S rDNA sequencing. Finally, rapamycin could diminish the tumorigenic capability of C. jejuni.ConclusionHuman clinical isolate C. jejuni 81–176 promotes colorectal cancer and induces changes in microbial composition and transcriptomic responses, a process dependent on CDT production.

Abstract: Objective of the study: Inborn lens opacity is the most frequent cause of childhood blindness. In this study, we aimed to define the presumed genetic cause of a congenital cataract present in a Mauritanian family over the last nine generations. Methods: A family history of the disease and eye examination were carried out for the family members. Next-generation sequencing using a panel of 116 cataract underlying genes was selectively conducted on the proband’s DNA. Nucleotide and amino acid changes and their impact on the phenotype were evaluated using various data analyzing software. Results: Congenital nuclear cataract, with autosomal dominant mode, was observed in the family. All patients had consequences on their vision in the first 2 years of life. Genetic screening revealed a new mutation c.166A>C (p.Thr56Pro) in GJA8, encoding the Cx50 α-connexin protein. This mutation co-segregated in all patients and was not observed in the unaffected family members and controls. The predicted secondary structure impacted by p.Thr56Pro revealed a localized disruption, in the first extra membrane loop of the wild-type sheet, which is replaced in the mutant protein by a turn then a coil. This conformational change was functionally predicted as probably damaging. Conclusion: A new mutation (c.166A>C) in GJA8 underlying a nuclear congenital cataract was identified in this study. Its segregation with the phenotype might be useful as a predicting marker of the disease.

Abstract: International audience; The transparency of two-dimensional (2D) materials to intermolecular interactions of crystalline materials has been an unresolved topic. Here we report that remote atomic interaction through 2D materials is governed by the binding nature, that is, the polarity of atomic bonds, both in the underlying substrates and in 2D material interlayers. Although the potential field from covalent-bonded materials is screened by a monolayer of graphene, that from ionic-bonded materials is strong enough to penetrate through a few layers of graphene. Such field penetration is substantially attenuated by 2D hexagonal boron nitride, which itself has polarization in its atomic bonds. Based on the control of transparency, modulated by the nature of materials as well as interlayer thickness, various types of single-crystalline materials across the periodic table can be epitaxially grown on 2D material-coated substrates. The epitaxial films can subsequently be released as free-standing membranes, which provides unique opportunities for the heterointegration of arbitrary single-crystalline thin films in functional applications.

Abstract: International audience; Despite much recent progress, our understanding of diversity–stability relationships across different study systems remains incomplete. In particular, recent theory clarified that within-species population stability and among-species asynchronous population dynamics combine to determine ecosystem temporal stability, but their relative importance in modulating diversity-ecosystem temporal stability relationships in different ecosystems remains unclear. We addressed this issue with a meta-analysis of empirical studies of ecosystem and population temporal stability in relation to species diversity across a range of taxa and ecosystems. We show that ecosystem temporal stability tended to increase with species diversity, regardless of study systems. Increasing diversity promoted asynchrony, which, in turn, contributed to increased ecosystem stability. The positive diversity–ecosystem stability relationship persisted even after accounting for the influences of environmental covariates (e.g., precipitation and nutrient input). By contrast, species diversity tended to reduce population temporal stability in terrestrial systems but increase population temporal stability in aquatic systems, suggesting that asynchronous dynamics among species are essential for stabilizing diverse terrestrial ecosystems. We conclude that there is compelling empirical evidence for a general positive relationship between species diversity and ecosystem-level temporal stability, but the contrasting diversity–population temporal stability relationships between terrestrial and aquatic systems call for more investigations into their underlying mechanisms.

Abstract: Rinitis al·lèrgica; Costos; Medicaments Rinitis alérgica; Costos; Medicamentos Allergic rhinitis; Costs; Medications Background The practice of allergology varies widely between countries, and the costs and sales for the treatment of rhinitis differ depending on practices and health systems. To understand these differences and their implications, the rhinitis market was studied in some of the EU countries. Methods We conducted a pharmaco-epidemiological database analysis to assess the medications that were being prescribed for allergic rhinitis in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. We used the IQVIA platforms for prescribed medicines (MIDAS®—Meaningful Integration of Data, Analytics and Services) and for OTC medicines (OTC International Market Tracking—OTCims). We selected the five most important markets in the EU (France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain). Results Intranasal decongestants were excluded from the analyses because they are rarely prescribed for allergic rhinitis. For both Standard Units (SU) and costs, France is leading the other countries. In terms of SU, the four other countries are similar. For costs, Poland is lower than the three others. However, medication use differs largely. For 2018, in SU, intranasal corticosteroid is the first treatment in Poland (70.0%), France (51.3%), Spain (51.1%) and Germany (50.3%), whereas the Italian market is dominated by systemic antihistamines (41.4%) followed by intranasal corticosteroids (30.1%). Results of other years were similar. Discussion There are major differences between countries in terms of rhinoconjunctivitis medication usage.

Abstract: Background Although there are many asymptomatic patients, one of the problems of COVID-19 is early recognition of the disease. COVID-19 symptoms are polymorphic and may include upper respiratory symptoms. However, COVID-19 symptoms may be mistaken with the common cold or allergic rhinitis. An ARIA-EAACI study group attempted to differentiate upper respiratory symptoms between the three diseases. Methods A modified Delphi process was used. The ARIA members who were seeing COVID-19 patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire on the upper airway symptoms of COVID-19, common cold and allergic rhinitis. Results Among the 192 ARIA members who were invited to respond to the questionnaire, 89 responded and 87 questionnaires were analysed. The consensus was then reported. A two-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in the symptom intensity between the three diseases (p < .001). Conclusions This modified Delphi approach enabled the differentiation of upper respiratory symptoms between COVID-19, the common cold and allergic rhinitis. An electronic algorithm will be devised using the questionnaire.

26. 'Not wond’ring at the present, nor the past': Dreaming through Time and Space in Shakespeare

Abstract: International audience; While the topics of time, space (including geography), and dreams in Shakespeare’s works have been examined individually by critics of different theoretical persuasions, this chapter moves beyond these studies by linking some of Shakespeare’s dizzying conceptions of time and space directly to his interest in dreams. The chapter shows that, in the plays of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1595), The Taming of the Shrew (c.1591), King Lear, and Cymbeline (1610), Shakespeare uses dreams and their topsy-turvy temporal and spatial logic to create moments of comic or tragic confusion for his characters. The chapter argues that, in these plays, the characters’ experiences of upside-down spatial and temporal structures as part of (or as a result of) their dreams are not simply tied to dramatic traditions like the comedic convention of misunderstanding and deception (which goes back to classical comedy) but rather reflect a broader cultural understanding of dreams. In fact, putting aside the Renaissance debates about the meanings of dreams (to which an abundance of scholarship has been devoted), the early modern experience of dreams was fundamentally one of temporal and spatial confusion. For example, prophetic dreams and dreams of visitations by the dead, by angels, or by gods – accounts of which abound in the Renaissance – constitute temporal derangements, because they bring the future or the past into the present. Such dreams are mostly found in texts influenced by classical culture or by scriptural passages where God or an angel speaks directly to the dreamer (e.g. Genesis 20:2, Matthew 1:20–23, Matthew 2:13, Matthew 2:19, Numbers 12:6, Job 33:14–18). Shakespeare’s plays themselves contain numerous instances of prophetic or seemingly prophetic dreams: Richard III has a dream in which his victims’ ghosts condemn him to “despair and die”; Calphurnia dreams of Caesar’s murder; Duke Humphrey has a dream that predicts the deaths of the dukes of Somerset and Suffolk; and Brabantio dreams of his daughter Desdemona’s elopement with Othello. While it is of course true that dreams in Shakespeare’s plays come in many forms – they can be not just prophetic or god-sent but also cautionary, demonic, psychophysiological, fictional, or metaphorical – this chapter suggests that Shakespeare repeatedly and consistently depicts the dream state as a condition of temporal and spatial derangement.

Bon from southern China are described with morphological evidence and phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and the concatenated partial LSU, mtSSU, rpb1, rpb2 and tef1 gene sequences. All three species possess sparse and broad lamellae. Russula latolamellata Y.Song & L.H.Qiu, sp. nov., is characterized by its cracking, black-tan pileus, scarlet-turning context on bruising and absence of pileocystidia and caulocystidia. Russula nigrocarpa S.Y.Zhou, Y.Song & L.H.Qiu, sp. nov., can be distinguished by its off-white lamellae, small basidiospores, hymenial cystidia and pileocystidia of various forms, often with forked apices and by its gelatinous pileipellis. Russula ochrobrunnea S.Y.Zhou, Y.Song & L.H.Qiu, sp. nov., is characterized by its cracking, grayish brown pileus with striate margin, light-brown lamellae whose edges turn dark-brown when mature, small basidiospores and slightly flexuous ormoniliform hymenial cystidia. Abstract: Global water erosion strongly affects the terrestrial carbon balance. However, this process is currently ignored by most global land surface models (LSMs) that are used to project the responses of terrestrial carbon storage to climate and land use changes. One of the main obstacles to implement erosion processes in LSMs is the high spatial resolution needed to accurately represent the effect of topography on soil erosion and sediment delivery to rivers. In this study, we present an upscaling scheme for including erosion‐induced lateral soil organic carbon (SOC) movements into the ORCHIDEE LSM. This upscaling scheme integrates information from high‐resolution (3″) topographic and soil erodibility data into a LSM forcing file at 0.5° spatial resolution. Evaluation of our model for the Rhine catchment indicates that it reproduces well the observed spatial and temporal (both seasonal and interannual) variations in river runoff and the sediment delivery from uplands to the river network. Although the average annual lateral SOC flux from uplands to the Rhine River network only amounts to 0.5% of the annual net primary production and 0.01% of the total SOC stock in the whole catchment, SOC loss caused by soil erosion over a long period (e.g., thousands of years) has the potential to cause a 12% reduction in the simulated equilibrium SOC stocks. Overall, this study presents a promising approach for including the erosion‐induced lateral carbon flux from the land to aquatic systems into LSMs and highlights the important role of erosion processes in the terrestrial carbon balance., Key Points We presented an upscaling scheme for including erosion‐induced lateral soil and carbon transfers into a global land surface modelOur model is a useful tool to estimate the impacts of climate and land cover changes on erosion‐induced soil carbon loss at large scaleModel application for the Rhine basin demonstrates that erosion‐induced soil carbon losses substantially reduce soil carbon stocks

Abstract: International audience; Increasing use of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has caused extensive concerns around the world. Effective detection methods to trace their pollution characteristics and environmental behaviors in complex soil-crop systems are urgently needed. In this study, a reliable and matrix effect (ME)-free method was developed for simultaneous determination of 14 legacy and emerging PFASs, including perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonate, 6 hydrogenous PFASs, 3 chlorinated PFASs, and 3 hexafluoropropylene oxide homologues, in 6 crop (the edible parts) and 5 soil matrices using ultrasonic extraction combined with solid-phase extraction and ultraperformance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (MS)/MS. The varieties of extractants and cleanup cartridges, the dosage of ammonia hydroxide, and the ME were studied to obtain an optimal pretreatment procedure. The developed method had high sensitivity and accuracy with satisfactory method detection limits (2.40-83.03 pg/g dry weight) and recoveries (72-117%) of all target analytes in matrices at five concentrations, that is, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 ng/g. In addition, the ME of this method (0.82-1.15) was negligible for all PFASs, even considering 11 different matrices. The successful application of the ME-free method to simultaneously determine the legacy and emerging PFASs in crop and soil samples has demonstrated its excellent practicability for monitoring emerging PFASs in soil-crop systems.

Abstract: International audience; Molecular mechanisms mediating tonic secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in response to hypocalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism (HPT) are unclear. Here we demonstrate increased heterocomplex formation between the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) and metabotropic γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) B1 receptor (GABAB1R) in hyperplastic parathyroid glands (PTGs) of patients with primary and secondary HPT. Targeted ablation of GABAB1R or glutamic acid decarboxylase 1 and 2 in PTGs produces hypocalcaemia and hypoparathyroidism, and prevents PTH hypersecretion in PTGs cultured from mouse models of hereditary HPT and dietary calcium-deficiency. Cobinding of the CaSR/GABAB1R complex by baclofen and high extracellular calcium blocks the coupling of heterotrimeric G-proteins to homomeric CaSRs in cultured cells and promotes PTH secretion in cultured mouse PTGs. Abstract: Depth to bedrock influences or controls many of the Earth’s physical and chemical processes. It plays important roles in soil science, geology, hydrology, land surface processes, civil engineering, and other related fields. However, information about depth to bedrock in China is very deficient, and there is no independent map of depth to bedrock in China currently. This paper describes the materials and methods to produce high-resolution (100 m) depth-to-bedrock maps of China. For different research and application needs, two sets of data are provided for users. One is the prediction by the ensemble of the random forests and gradient boosting tree models, and the other is the prediction and the uncertainty of prediction based on quantile regression forests model. In comparison with depth-to-bedrock maps of China extracted from previous global predictions, our predictions showed higher accuracy and more spatial details. Abstract: Part 2: Poster Papers; International audience; It is generally very difficult to optimize the routing policies in optical networks with dynamic traffic. Most widely-used routing policies, e.g., shortest path routing and least congested path (LCP) routing, are heuristic policies. Although the LCP is often regarded as the best-performing adaptive routing policy, we are often eager to know whether there exist better routing policies that surpass these heuristics in performance. In this paper, we propose a framework of reinforcement learning (RL) based routing scheme, that learns routing decisions during the interactions with the environment. With a proposed self-learning method, the RL agent can improve its routing policy continuously. Simulations on a ring-topology metro optical network demonstrate that, the proposed scheme outperforms the LCP routing policy.

Abstract: International audience; Hyperaccumulator plants are new alternative sources for elements of interest e.g., nickel, rare-earth elements(REEs), as concentrations in their aerial parts are higher than in common low-grade ores. The fern Dicranopterislinearis naturally grows on former mine tailings in Southern China and is classified as a REE hyperaccumulator.The efficient recovery of REEs is fundamental to ensure economic viability and to limit the environmental impactof the process. This study presents a novel approach for the treatment of the Dicranopteris biomass after incinerationto ash to drastically improve the “bio-ore” grade and to generate heat. Ash structure and composition isdescribed, and challenges for efficient recovery of REEs are discussed. A pre-processing step, aiming at renderingthe REEs available for extraction, was designed to dissolve aluminum (Al) using concentrated sodium hydroxide(6 M) at an average temperature (80 ◦C). The operating parameters were investigated through experimentmethodology design and parametric studies to build an empirical model. Additional experiments revealed thatthe formation of insoluble aluminosilicate compounds limited the removal of aluminium. Rinsing the REE-richresidue proved to be effective to increase the REE concentration and was carefully designed. Subsequently,the REEs were extracted under mildly acidic conditions using nitric acid (25 ◦C, pH 4.8), producing a valuablesolution devoid of aluminium and containing 74% of the REEs.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the formation of the Qilian Shan in the NE Tibetan Plateau provides insights into the growth mechanisms of the northern portion of the plateau through time. The onset time of exhumation in the Qilian Shan is still debated. The Qinghai Nan Shan subrange, located in the southeastern Qilian Shan, is cut by the Yellow River that forms Longyang Gorge, providing a good vertical profile for thermochronological investigation of exhumation. In this paper, we reconstruct the cooling and exhumation history of the Eastern Qinghai Nan Shan using apatite fission-track(AFT) and apatite (Usingle bondTh)/He(AHe) thermochronological dating on basement rocks. The fission-track data display a marked age-elevation trend from Early Cretaceous (114–122 Ma) ages at the bottom of the canyon to Early-Middle Jurassic ages (165–180 Ma) at the top. Mean (Usingle bondTh)/He ages are mainly Early Cretaceous (97–128 Ma) with one Eocene outlier (42 Ma). Combined with fission track lengths, Dpar values and thermal modeling results, these data indicate that the study area resided above the closure temperature of AFT and AHe until Early Cretaceous. Rapid cooling occurred during the Early Cretaceous and early Cenozoic likely driven by the Lhasa and Indian blocks collision with the southern margin of the Asian continent. Nonetheless, since then exhumation was limited to less than a few kilometers in the study area. Combined with regional geological studies, the thermochronological analysis demonstrates that, since the Mesozoic, intense exhumation occurred simultaneously along the northern and southern margins of the Qilian Shan. Hence, we suggest that the geomorphic framework of the northeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau was established during the Early Cretaceous-early Cenozoic.

Abstract: International audience; Building roof extraction from airborne laser scanning point clouds is significant for building modeling. The common method adopts a bottom-up strategy which requires a ground filtering process first, and the subsequent process of region growing based on a single seed point easily causes oversegmentation problem. This paper proposes a novel method to extract roofs. A top-down strategy based on cloth simulation is first used to detect seed point sets with semantic information; then, the roof seed points are extracted instead of a single seed point for region-growing segmentation. The proposed method is validated by three point cloud datasets that contain different types of roof and building footprints. The results show that the top-down strategy directly extracts roof seed point sets, most roofs are extracted by the region-growing algorithm based on the seed point set, and the total errors of roof extraction in the test areas are 0.65%, 1.07%, and 1.45%. The proposed method simplifies the workflow of roof extraction, reduces oversegmentation, and determines roofs in advance based on the semantic seed point set, which suggests a practical solution for rapid roof extraction.

Abstract: The randomization methods that are applied for privacy-preserving data mining are commonly subject to reconstruction, linkage, and semantic-related attacks. Some existing works employed random noise addition to realize probabilistic anonymity, aiming only at linkage attacks. Random noise addition is vulnerable to reconstruction attacks, and is unable to achieve semantic closeness, particularly on high-dimensional data, to prevent semantic-related attacks. For linkage attacks, the main security vulnerability of their proposed probabilistic anonymity lies in the assumption that the attacker had a priori knowledge of the quasi-identifiers of all individuals. When only some individuals leak their quasi-identifiers, the proposed model will become incapable, because the attacker can deploy a different linkage attack that has not been studied before. This type of attack is much easier to deploy and is thus very harmful. In this paper, we propose new frameworks of probabilistic $(1,k)$ - and $(k,k)$ -anonymity to defend against all these linkage attacks, and realize the frameworks on a hybrid randomization model. The model is also secure against reconstruction attacks. We further achieve statistical semantic closeness of high-dimensional data to prevent semantic-related attacks on the model. The frameworks also allow us to re-design the traditional $K$ -nearest neighbor algorithm to leverage the introduced data uncertainty and improve the mining results. This paper demonstrates the promising applications in large-scale and high-dimensional data mining in clouds, by providing high efficiency and security to protect data privacy, guaranteeing high data utility for mining purposes, on-time processing, and non-interactive data publishing.

Abstract: The effect of biodiversity on primary productivity has been a hot topic in ecology for over 20 years. Biodiversity–productivity relationships in natural ecosystems are highly variable, although positive relationships are most common. Understanding the conditions under which different relationships emerge is still a major challenge. Here, by analyzing HerbDivNet data, a global survey of natural grasslands, we show that biodiversity stabilizes rather than increases plant productivity in natural grasslands at the global scale. Our results suggest that the effect of species richness on productivity shifts from strongly positive in low-productivity communities to strongly negative in high-productivity communities. Thus, plant richness maintains community productivity at intermediate levels. As a result, it stabilizes plant productivity against environmental heterogeneity across space. Unifying biodiversity–productivity and biodiversity–spatial stability relationships at the global scale provides a new perspective on the functioning of natural ecosystems., Biodiversity–productivity relationships in natural ecosystems are highly variable, although positive relationships are most common. Abstract: International audience; The desorption rate is an important factor determining cadmium (Cd) ecotoxicity and pollution remediation in soils. The pedotransfer functions (PTFs) of desorption rate coefficients of fresh Cd in soils have been developed in literature. We hypothesized that the aging of Cd pollution would alter Cd desorption process. Taking historically polluted soils as the object, this study aimed at testing the hypothesis and developing new PTFs of desorption rate coefficients for historical Cd. 15 d batch extraction experiments and 13 kinetic models were employed to define Cd desorption rate coefficients in 27 historically polluted soil samples. Compared with fresh Cd, the desorption rate coefficients of historical Cd were lower, and the break time of biphasic desorption processes was retarded to 3 d (4320 min). Different with the usual models for fresh Cd desorption (e.g. parabolic diffusion and two constant rate models), the best models to mimic the historical Cd desorption processes were the pseudo first order, logarithmic, Elovich, and simple Elovich models. The rate-limiting step controlling Cd desorption was changed from the intraparticle diffusion to the interface reaction with aging of pollution. New PTFs of desorption rate coefficients of historical Cd were established (R2 ≥ 0.71). Cd desorption rate coefficients increased with organic matter and clay contents, but decreased with oxalate extractable Fe content, solution pH, cation exchange capacity, and silt content. The key soil properties influencing desorption rate coefficients were not altered by the aging of pollution. The developed PTFs could guide us to adjusting the ecotoxicity and pollution remediation of Cd in historically polluted field soils.

Abstract: International audience; Recent antitumor drug development has included investigation of a wide variety of anti-angiogenesis therapies. Because cancer cells in tumors require new blood vessels to grow and spread, they stimulate capillary proliferation from existing vessels as well as new vessel formation from endothelial precursor cells. Our previous findings suggested that drug resistance in mouse endothelial cells supported tumor growth, but the relationship between endothelial cells (ECs) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells remained unclear. Exosomes are small membrane vesicles that are released by several cell types, including human microvascular ECs (HMECs). Exosomes carrying membrane and cytoplasmic constituents have been described as participants in a novel mechanism of cell-to-cell communication. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the interactions between HMECs and NPC cells. We found that drug-resistant HMECs secreted small heterogeneous 40-100 nm vesicles, defined as exosomes. Co-incubation of NPC cells with doxorubicin-resistant (R-DOX) HMEC-derived exosomes resulted in promotion of their proliferation, migration, and chemoresistance, as well as changes in the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers. These effects were significantly inhibited by treatment with GW4869 (an exosome inhibitor). We also found that GW4869 inhibited the stimulation of drug-resistant HMECs on NPC progression by modulating EMT in vivo. These data suggest that exosomes participate in a novel mechanism by which drug-resistant ECs enhance NPC progression.

Abstract: Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays critical roles in stabilizing atmospheric CO2 concentration, but the mechanistic controls on the amount and distribution of SOC on global scales are not well understood. In turn, this has hampered the ability to model global C budgets and to find measures to mitigate climate change. Here, based on the data from a large field survey campaign with 2600 plots across China's forest ecosystems and a global collection of published data from forested land, we find that a low litter carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) and high wetness index (P/PET, precipitation-to-potential-evapotranspiration ratio) are the two factors that promote SOC accumulation, with only minor contributions of litter quantity and soil texture. The field survey data demonstrated that high plant diversity decreased litter C/N and thus indirectly promoted SOC accumulation by increasing the litter quality. We conclude that any changes in plant-community composition, plant-species richness and environmental factors that can reduce the litter C/N ratio, or climatic changes that increase wetness index, may promote SOC accumulation. The study provides a guideline for modeling the carbon cycle of various ecosystem scales and formulates the principle for land-based actions for mitigating the rising atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Abstract: A novel Fe Si Ca rich material (IS), chicken manure (CM) and its biochar were investigated for their efficiency in simultaneous remediation of Cd and As uptake by the vegetable Brassica chinensis L. Wet chemistry analysis and X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to reveal the mechanisms responsible for Cd and As fixation in the amended soils. The IS treatment performed best in reducing Cd uptake, while the combination of IS and CM was the optimal one for As fixation. The precipitation/co-precipitation (in cadmium silicate/phosphate/phosphate hydroxide, cadmium iron and manganese oxides under alkaline conditions, and calcium/magnesium/ferric arsenates) and specific chemisorption (by amorphous iron/manganese oxides) were proved to be more efficient in simultaneously lowering As and Cd phytoavailability than was organic complexation. These findings demonstrate that Fe Si Ca and Fe Si Ca C amendments are highly efficient and promising in-situ remediation systems for safe crop production on soils contaminated with Cd and As.

Abstract: International audience; Purpose: Intraocular pressure leading to glaucoma is a major cause of childhood blindness in developing countries. In this study, we sought to identify gene variants potentially associated with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) in the Mauritanian population.Methods: Using next-generation sequencing (NGS), a panel of PCG candidate genes was screened in a search for DNA mutations in four families with multiple occurrences of PCG.Results: Targeted exome sequencing analysis revealed predicted pathogenic mutations in four genes: CYP1B1 (c.217_218delTC, p.Ser73Valfs*150), MYOC (878C>A, p.T293K), NTF4 (c.601T>G, p.Cys201Gly), and WDR36 (c.2078A>G, p.Asn693Ser), each carried by a different family.Conclusions: Genetic variation associated with PCG in this study reflects the ethnic heterogeneity of the Mauritanian population. However, a larger cohort is needed to identify additional families carrying these mutations and confirm their biologic role.

Abstract: Phytoextraction is a promising technology for decontamination and recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from REE-rich wastes. However, the improvement of REE phytoextraction efficiency on ion-adsorption REE mine tailings remains a challenge because the substrate can hardly support the growth of hyperaccumulators. In this study, REE phytoextraction using a REE hyperaccumulator, Phytolacca americana, grown on ion-adsorption REE mine tailing materials amended with organic material (OM) and biochar (BC) was explored through a pot experiment. Results show that under 1% OM, 5% OM, 1% BC, and 5% BC treatments, the shoots biomass of P. americana was 4.17, 7.85, 3.41, and 5.14 times higher than the control (without organic amendment) respectively, whereas the REE concentrations in shoots were 2.02, 68.4, 0.16, and 1.98 times lower than the control (524 ± 82.8 mg kg−1) respectively. The highest REE yield was obtained under 1% BC treatment and was 3.56 times that of the control. Both OM and BC treatments largely improved the soil physico-chemical properties. However, compared with OM and 5% BC treatments, 1% BC treatment induced a smaller increase in pH, and the amount of organic carbon and nutrients in the soil solution, thereby minimizing the reduction of REE bioavailability. We conclude that amendment with a low dosage of BC could be a potential way to improve REE phytoextraction efficiency by P. americana on ion-adsorption REE mine tailings.

Abstract: Oxygen vacancies play an important role in the luminescence processes of inorganic scintillator materials. In order to study the effects of oxygen vacancies on the luminescence properties of Na3LuSi3O9:Ce3+, these phosphors were prepared using a high temperature solid-state reaction method under different atmosphere and raw materials. It was found that oxygen vacancy had great influence on the absorption, photoluminescence and decay curves of Na3LuSi3O9:Ce3+. The luminescence intensity and peak position showed a regular change when synthesizing atmosphere changed. Na3LuSi3O9:Ce3+ with more oxygen vacancies showed much stronger luminescence intensity at high temperature than that without vacancies. And it was also found that the decreasing of oxygen vacancies can quicken the photoluminescence decay of Ce3+ in Na3LuSi3O9. The existence of oxygen vacancies in Na3LuSi3O9:Ce3+ was confirmed by Zr4+ doping and thermoluminescence emission spectra. At last, emission bands of Ce3+ and oxygen vacancies were well distinguished under X-ray excitation and probable cause of the formation of oxygen vacancies was discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Co-option of RAG1 and RAG2 for antigen receptor gene assembly by V(D)J recombination was a crucial event in the evolution of jawed vertebrate adaptive immunity. RAG1/2 are proposed to have arisen from a transposable element, but definitive evidence for this is lacking. Here, we report the discovery of ProtoRAG, a DNA transposon family from lancelets, the most basal extant chordates. A typical ProtoRAG is flanked by 5-bp target site duplications and a pair of terminal inverted repeats (TIRs) resembling V(D) J recombination signal sequences. Between the TIRs reside tail-to-tail-oriented, intron-containing RAG1-like and RAG2-like genes. We demonstrate that ProtoRAG was recently active in the lancelet germ-line and that the lancelet RAG1/2-like proteins can mediate TIR-dependent transposon excision, host DNA recombination, transposition, and low-efficiency TIR rejoining using reaction mechanisms similar to those used by vertebrate RAGs. We propose that ProtoRAG represents a molecular "living fossil" of the long-sought RAG transposon.

Abstract: Metal tailings are potential sources of strong environmental pollution. In situ remediation involves the installation of a plant cover to stabilize materials and pollutants. Whether metal(loid)s are effectively immobilized in remediated tailing ponds submitted to heavy rainfall remains uncertain. In this study, tailing materials were collected from bare tailings (control), grass-planted (G) and grass-shrub planted (GS) areas on a former Pb/Zn mine site. Batch column experiments were performed with three rainfall intensities of 0.36, 0.48, and 0.50 mL min−1 for 18 d in the lab. The pH, Eh, Cd, Pb, Zn and As concentration in leachate were recorded. Selected leached tailing materials were finally characterized. Results showed that leachates from control were strongly acidic (pH 3.11–4.65), and that Cd, Pb, Zn and As were quickly released at high rate (e.g., 945 mg L−1 Zn). During the experiment up to 4% Cd present in the material was released and almost 1% Zn. With material collected from the G area, leachates were even more acidic (2.16–2.84) with a rainfall intensity of 0.50 mL min−1 and exhibited a high redox potential (588–639 mV). However, concentrations of metals in leachates were much lower than that in the control, except for Zn (e.g., 433 mg L−1), and they tended to decrease with time. Cumulative leaching rate was still relatively high (e.g., 0.68% Cd; 0.75% Zn) during the first eight days (stage I). However, with the GS treatment, leachate pH gradually raised from acid to alkaline values (3.9–8.2) during stage I, then remained high until the end of the experiment (stage II). Also, amounts of elements released during the 18 d were low in general. The releasing ratios of Cd (R2 > 0.95), Pb (R2 > 0.95), As (R2 > 0.87), and Zn (R2 > 0.90) fitted well with a two-constant model. In conclusion, under subtropical climate with heavy rainfall, phytostabilization is effective but immobilization of metals is higher with a combination of grass and shrub than with only grass to reduce leaching of As and Zn.

Abstract: International audience; Microorganisms in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are essential for water purification to protect public and environmental health. However, the diversity of microorganisms and the factors that control it are poorly understood. Using a systematic global-sampling effort, we analysed the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences from ~1,200 activated sludge samples taken from 269 WWTPs in 23 countries on 6 continents. Our analyses revealed that the global activated sludge bacterial communities contain ~1 billion bacterial phylotypes with a Poisson lognormal diversity distribution. Despite this high diversity, activated sludge has a small, global core bacterial community (n = 28 operational taxonomic units) that is strongly linked to activated sludge performance. Meta-analyses with global datasets associate the activated sludge microbiomes most closely to freshwater populations. In contrast to macroorganism diversity, activated sludge bacterial communities show no latitudinal gradient. Furthermore, their spatial turnover is scale-dependent and appears to be largely driven by stochastic processes (dispersal and drift), although deterministic factors (temperature and organic input) are also important. Our findings enhance our mechanistic understanding of the global diversity and biogeography of activated sludge bacterial communities within a theoretical ecology framework and have important implications for microbial ecology and wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract: International audience; Accurate direct estimation of the left ventricle (LV) multitype indices from two-dimensional (2D) echocardiograms of paired apical views, i.e., paired apical four-chamber (A4C) and two-chamber (A2C), is of great significance to clinically evaluate cardiac function. It enables a comprehensive assessment from multiple dimensions and views. Yet it is extremely challenging and has never been attempted, due to significantly varied LV shape and appearance across subjects and along cardiac cycle, the complexity brought by the paired different views, unexploited inter-frame indices relatedness hampering working effect, and low image quality preventing segmentation. We propose a paired-views LV network (PV-LVNet) to automatically and directly estimate LV multitype indices from paired echo apical views. Based on a newly designed Res-circle Net, the PV-LVNet robustly locates LV and automatically crops LV region of interest from A4C and A2C sequence with location module and image resampling, then accurately and consistently estimates 7 different indices of multiple dimensions (1D, 2D and 3D) and views (A2C, A4C, and union of A2C+A4C) with indices module. The experiments show that our method achieves high performance with accuracy up to 2.85mm mean absolute error and internal consistency up to 0.974 Cronbach's α for the cardiac indices estimation. All of these indicate that our method enables an efficient, accurate and reliable cardiac function diagnosis in clinical.
