INTRODUÇÃO: O ciclo claro e escuro influencia os ritmos circadianos, que podem corresponder ao ciclo de repouso e atividade, sendo pessoas vespertinas mais vulneráveis a sintomas ansiosos e depressivos do que pessoas matutinas. OBJETIVO: Apresentar a relação entre os transtornos ansiosos e o cronótipo em estudantes universitários, considerando as alterações do ciclo sono-vigília decorrentes das demandas acadêmicas e as preferências circadianas. MÉTODO: Foi realizada uma revisão na base de dados PubMed, utilizando os descritores, em inglês: "crhonotype" OR "morningness" OR "eveningness" AND "students" AND "anxiety". RESULTADOS: verifica alto risco de ansiedade em universitários, sendo os sujeitos do tipo vespertino mais vulneráveis a distúrbios psiquiátricos, em comparação com os do tipo nenhum e matutino, e ao sono e ao tabagismo comparados aos sujeitos do tipo matutino. Essas relações entre cronótipo e riscos psicopatológicos apresentam divergências de acordo com o sexo. CONCLUSÃO: Os estudos sugerem associação entre preferência circadiana e manifestação de sintomas ansiosos em estudantes universitários.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of soil texture, fertilizer formulation and nitrogen dose on the characteristics of upland rice production, and to compare the Agronomic Efficiency Index (AEI) of formulations of biochar-urea pellets (BUPs). The treatments comprised four fertilizers (three formulations of BUP and urea) and five nitrogen doses (0, 75, 150, 300 and 600 mg dm-3), analyzed in two soil (sandy and clay). For each soil texture, a greenhouse experiment was established as a randomized block design with a 5 x 4 factorial arrangement and four replicates. Chlorophyll index, plant height, number of tillers and panicles, dry mass of aerial parts and of grains were all affected significantly by soil texture, fertilizer formulation and nitrogen dose and/or by the interactions between these sources of variation. The results demonstrated that the performances of BUPs are highly dependent on soil texture. Under sandy soil, application of BUP-based fertilizers contributed to the increase or maintenance of grain production compared to that of urea alone. Whereas under clayey soil the performance of BUPs exceeded that of urea only at low nitrogen doses. Compared to urea, BUPs were more efficient under sandy soil, with potential to increase AEI. Os tratamentos foram: quatro fertilizantes (três formulações de BUP e ureia) e cinco doses de nitrogênio (0, 75, 150, 300 and 600 mg dm-3), avaliados em dois solos de textura distinta. Para cada solo (arenoso e argiloso), foi conduzido um experimento em casa-de-vegetação em blocos casualizados em um arranjo fatorial 5 (doses) x 4 (fertilizantes), com quatro repetições. Objetivo: Avaliar os fatores associados à não adesão à terapia antirretroviral em Pacientes Vivendo com HIV/AIDS (PVHA) internados em um hospital referência no estado do Pará através do Teste de Morisky-Green (TMG). Método: Estudo descritivo, transversal e quantitativo, aplicado a 22 pacientes PVHA as perguntas do TMG e formulário sobre o perfil social e comportamental. Pesquisa realizada de julho a setembro de 2017. Os dados foram organizados em planilhas do Microsoft Excel®, realizado análise descritiva das frequências absolutas e relativas. Resultados: O perfil sócio demográfico dos PVHA foi 59,1% do sexo masculino, com idade média 39,6 anos, baixo nível de escolaridade, sem emprego fixo, 77,3% procedentes da região metropolitana de Belém e 41% com mais de 5 anos de diagnóstico do vírus HIV. Todos os PVHA foram identificados como não aderentes, embora compreendessem que a terapia é necessária e importante, e não deixassem de tomar o medicamento por se sentir melhor ou triste. Apesar disto, 77,3% desconhecia os nomes dos medicamentos e 63% compreendia que a doença é para a vida toda. Todos referiram bom relacionamento com a equipe de saúde. As principais reações adversas relatadas foram náuseas, vertigem, vômito e sonolência. Conclusão: A não adesão é um processo dinâmico e multifatorial, cabendo ao profissional identificar os fatores de risco para evitar interrupções no tratamento.

Introdução: A quimioterapia adjuvante (QTA) é uma escolha terapêutica pós-operatória frequente no manejo de inúmeras neoplasias – de cabeça e pescoço, de mama, espinhais, abdominais, pélvicas e ginecológicas –, ainda assim, faltam diretrizes específicas e amplamente reconhecidas. Objetivo: Apresentar os riscos relacionados à QTA, incluindo, menor taxa de sobrevida, taxas de eficácia desfavoráveis e complicações agudas ou tardias. Métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática de artigos, na base de dados PubMed e no Portal Regional da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) em setembro de 2021 com os descritores: “quimioterapia adjuvante”, “período pós-operatório” e “risco”. Foram incluídos estudos publicados entre 2016 e 2021 que abordassem riscos relacionados à quimioterapia pós-operatória e, após exclusão conforme duplicatas, tipo de estudo, idiomas e leitura do resumo, foram selecionados 29 estudos para análise. Resultados e discussão: Os riscos relacionados à QTA diferiram entre os distintos tipos de neoplasias e estágios. Em condições específicas, a QTA foi relacionada a melhores taxas de sobrevida em pacientes com câncer, por exemplo, de mama, de pulmão, gástrico, hepático, pancreátrico, de bexiga, retal e metástases; e a taxas desfavoráveis de recorrência, a citar, de câncer hepático e endometrial. A QTA pode apresentar resultados desfavoráveis, a incluir complicações de ostomia em pacientes com neoplasia retal e tromboembolismo venoso em pacientes com câncer de ovário. Conclusão: Sugere-se ponderar benefícios e riscos associados a QTA, bem como a padronização de suas indicações.

Resumo: Indicadores da qualidade em saúde são ferramentas para mensurar a qualidade organizacional de um determinado serviço prestado.Objetivoanalisar as evidências científicas sobre o uso de indicadores de qualidade no contexto hospitalar e as dificuldades encontradas para a utilização dos mesmos.Métodoestudo com abordagem qualitativa por meio de uma revisão integrativa de literatura, utilizando artigos publicados na íntegra, em português e inglês, indexados na base de dados da BVS publicados no período de 2018 a 2022. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio do formulário de URSI (2005) tendo como ferramenta de análise dos dados da pesquisa o software IRAMUTEQ.Resultadono total 17 artigos foram selecionados para compor a pesquisa sendo divididas em 7 classes discursivas elencados pelo sistema IRAMUTEQ.Conclusãoconstatamos por meio deste estudo a importância do uso de indicadores de qualidade em saúde na área hospitalar, para mensurar e avaliar os resultados obtidos naquele estabelecimento com a finalidade de possibilitar estratégias de melhorias, promovendo consequentemente um cuidado seguro aos usuários e profissionais de saúde.

O termo biossegurança está relacionado à prevenção, diminuição ou eliminação dos riscos nos atendimentos voltados à saúde. Os profissionais devem ter o conhecimento dos protocolos e de sua importância à saúde pública. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a aplicação de normas de biossegurança por alunos de graduação do curso de Odontologia de uma instituição de ensino privada. Foram analisadas 270 duplas do 5° ao 10° período, nas diferentes especialidades clínicas. A coleta de dados foi realizada de maneira observacional por 5 pesquisadores que preencheram um questionário com 20 questões objetivas. Observou-se que, em relação aos equipamentos de proteção individual, a maioria dos discentes realizou de maneira adequada seu uso, não apresentando diferença significativa entre os turnos avaliados. No entanto, observou-se falhas no processo de limpeza dos materiais pós-atendimento na central de esterilização, onde a maioria dos discentes não realizou o protocolo de cuidados com os materiais utilizados. Conclui-se que os protocolos de biossegurança estão sendo utilizados, contudo, ainda existem falhas no processo de controle, sendo necessário protocolos mais rígidos e educação contínua pelas instituições de ensino na Odontologia para maior conscientização por parte dos discentes.

Scoping review on Opioid Poisoning Education and Naloxone Distribution training conducted in a remote/virtual setting.

Central Vascular Access Devices (CVAD) are essential for the clinical management of hospitalized patients on long-term therapy. Specifically in the population of onco-hematological patients, CVADs play an important role in the treatment regimen, facilitating the administration of chemotherapy, hydration, transfusion, and antibiotic therapy, in addition to avoiding frequent venipunctures due to difficult venous access. On the other hand, the incidence of complications, such as Catheter associated bloodstream infection (CABSI) is higher in onco-hematological patients than in oncological patients in general and in non-oncological patients, due to neutropenia induced by chemotherapy treatment, the underlying disease itself and frequent blood transfusions. This research is justified by the importance of studying the specificities of the onco-hematological population that can led to complications related to CVAD, in order to contribute to evidence-based nursing care planning. We will conduct a systematic review to answer the research question: What is the prevalence of complications associated to the central vascular access device of adult patients with onco-hematological diseases? The aim of this systematic review is to estimate the prevalence of complications associated to the central vascular access device of adult patients with onco-hematological diseases.

This is a systematic review that will be conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement to identify the best evidence of dressing for the insertion site of central vascular access device (CVAD) in onco-hematological patients for the prevention of catheter-associated bloodstream infection (CABSI).

O IV Fórum Baiano de Atenção Primária à Saúde foi um evento organizado pela Liga de Atenção Primária à Saúde (LAPS) da Universidade Federal da Bahia. Sua concepção iniciou-se durante a reativação da LAPS (2020-2021), momento em que estudantes e docentes reuniram-se com interesse na formação de um grupo em defesa da Atenção Primária. Desse modo, no IV Fórum, pretendeu-se construir um espaço representativo das discussões tensionadas ao longo dos encontros semanais desse grupo nesse período, como os “Diálogos em Saúde” (atividade de extensão coordenada pela LAPS), ocorridos em mídias sociais eletrônicas. Assim, foram (re)estabelecidos contatos entre estudantes, pesquisadores, trabalhadores da saúde e movimentos sociais, que se juntaram às ações do evento. Dessarte, a reorganização da liga gerou como fruto a produção do Fórum, de modo que este projeto se tornou um meio para o desenvolvimento de esforços, interações e afetos nesse coletivo, consolidando a LAPS no processo. A essas pessoas, somaram-se aquelas alcançadas através da divulgação em redes sociais, capitaneada pela comissão de comunicação. Além dessa comissão, a produção do evento dispôs de coordenação, secretaria, comissão científica e de infraestrutura tecnológica. Essas equipes definiram agendas compartilhadas de trabalhos, debatidos em reuniões semanais. No evento, ocorrido em 27 e 28 de janeiro de 2022, a programação planejada ganhou corpo em salas de videoconferência e de transmissão ao vivo, nas quais foram debatidas e apresentadas proposições em educação e saúde coletiva, assumindo esse espaço como de formação e debate de concepções e práticas no âmbito da Atenção Primária à Saúde. A Síndrome Metabólica tem sido objeto crescente de discussão e preocupação uma vez que suas causas estão associadas a uma mudança significativa no padrão de consumo alimentar da população e estilo de vida com consequência no aumento de doenças como diabetes mellitus, hipertensão arterial as quais geralmente estão em conformidade com os maus hábitos alimentares e ao sedentarismo aumentando o risco de doenças cardiovasculares. Objetivo: analisar a relação da alimentação inadequada com a Síndrome Metabólica. Metodologia: Optou-se por fazer uma revisão de literatura que é um método que proporciona a síntese de conhecimento e a incorporação da aplicabilidade de resultados de estudos significativos na prática. Se fez uso de materiais já elaborados: livros, artigos científicos, revistas, monografia na busca de conhecimentos sobre a relação da alimentação com a Síndrome Metabólica como forma de conhecer e prevenir a doença, correlacionando tal conhecimento com abordagens já trabalhadas por outros autores. Resultados: com base na literatura, verificou-se que a Síndrome Metabólica tem múltiplos fatores como causa, com sinais e sintomas complexos e coincidentes com outros tipos de doenças. Conclusão: a alimentação inadequada aliada a um estilo de vida sem regras contribui significativamente para o aparecimento da doença, sendo a gordura abdominal um agravante de grande relevância na associação com a doença. O trabalho apresentado buscou tecer algumas considerações e reflexões acerca de como o corpo é percebido no âmbito da Enfermagem, partindo da bibliografia da área sobre o tema. Através desse olhar sobre o ambiente nativo, percebeu-se que a área possui grande influência do modelo biomédico. Entretanto, as dimensões psicológica, social, emocional e cultural aparentam ter bastante relevância, principalmente quando a categoria estudada aparece junto a noção de cuidado, reivindicada como prática especifica e essencial para a atuação da/o enfermeira/o. Nesse sentido, parece-nos que o cuidado se constitui como uma forma de se distanciar do paradigma mecanicista e de suas consequências, trazendo consigo uma certa autonomia à atividade das enfermeiras e enfermeiros, como um fazer distinto da medicina em termos de despersonalização e atenção a integralidade do outro.

However, due to their geographic proximity and similar habitat, they are here tentatively identified as the newly described species. Diagnosis. Segmentation of the tail into distinct whorls places the new species in the genus Acanthocercus. Within this genus, heterogeneous body scalation refers it to the cyanogaster / atricollis group and the high density of enlarged trunk scales, in combination with a black patch on the shoulder, place it in the A. atricollis complex. Acanthocercus ceriacoi sp. nov. is a medium sized lizard (mean SVL 122.5 mm [99–143 mm]; mean total length 285 mm [224–330 mm]) for its genus and overall is very similar in morphology to A. cyanocephalus. However, it may be distinguished from all other species of the complex by its meristic characters. The new species has lower scale counts when compared to other species of the A. atricollis complex group (mean scale rows around midbody 108, mean dorsal scale rows 64, mean ventral scale rows 85). In life, displaying males are characterized by a blue coloration of the head; neck, shoulders, body and limbs brownish with a pattern of white and black stripes and speckles; and a pale vertebral band from the neck to the tail, distinct anteriorly between the flanks, becoming more indistinct along a brown background posteriorly. Comparison with other close related Acanthocercus species. Acanthocercus ceriacoi sp. nov. can be distinguished from other taxa of the A. atricollis complex by the following characters (see Table 2): (a) Acanthocercus atricollis has a larger SVL (mean 129 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 302 mm vs. 285 mm). It has higher mean counts of scale rows around midbody (112 vs. 108), dorsal scales (67 vs. 63), and ventral scales (87 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The mean number of precloacal pores is higher in A. atricollis than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (22 vs 18). Acanthocercus atricollis presents a blue or green head and ventral surface, in some individuals extending to the body, while in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. the blue is limited to the head. (b) Acanthocercus branchi has a smaller SVL (mean 109 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 262 mm vs. 285 mm). It has higher mean counts of scale rows around midbody (117 vs. 108), dorsal scales (73 vs. 63), and ventral scales (88 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The ranges of these characters largely overlap in both species, although they are higher in A. branchi than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The mean number of precloacal pores is higher in A. branchi than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (20 vs 18). (c) Acanthocercus cyanocephalus has a larger SVL (mean 138 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 334 mm vs. 285 mm). It is morphologically very similar to A. ceriacoi sp. nov. and its meristic differences are subtle. Acanthocercus cyanocephalus has a higher mean dorsal scale count (68 vs. 63), and a lower mean number of ventral scales (80 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The mean number of precloacal pores is higher in A. cyanocephalus than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (22 vs 18). The major difference between these two species is the coloration of displaying males, which in A. cyanocephalus is characterized by the blue coloration of the head extending to the neck and shoulders, whereas in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. the blue is limited to the head. (d) Acanthocercus cyanogaster has a smaller SVL (mean 101 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 255 mm vs. 285 mm). It has lower mean counts of ventral scales (76 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The ranges of this character slightly overlap in the two species, although they are higher in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. than in A. cyanogaster. The mean number of precloacal pores is much higher in A. cyanogaster than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (38 vs 18). [A. cyanogaster is not a part of A. atricollis group but is included here due to its morphological similarity and because of the historical use of the name to describe this population]. (e) Acanthocercus gregorii has a smaller SVL (mean 119 mm vs. 123 mm) but greater total length (mean 291 mm vs. 285 mm). A. gregorii has lower mean counts of scale rows around midbody (104 vs. 108) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The ranges of these characters are higher in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. than in A. gregorii. The mean number of precloacal pores is higher in A. gregorii than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (22 vs 18). In displaying adult males, A. gregorii are characterized by their bluish-green head and a uniform greenish-blue throat, with a uniform blue body (Klausewitz 1957; Wagner et al. 2018), whereas in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. the blue of the male is limited to the head. (f) Acanthocercus kiwuensis has a smaller SVL (mean 111 mm vs. 123 mm) but greater total length (mean 290 mm vs. 285 mm). A. kiwuensis has lower mean counts of scale rows around midbody (87 vs. 108) and ventral scales (67 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The ranges of this character largely overlap in the two species, although they are higher in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. than in A. kiwuensis. Moreover A. kiwuensis does not possess transverse rows of enlarged scales (Wagner et al. 2018). The mean number of precloacal pores is lower in A. kiwuensis than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (10 vs 18). (g) Acanthocercus margaritae has a smaller SVL (mean 112 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 258 mm vs. 285 mm). It has higher mean counts of scale rows around midbody (136 vs. 108), dorsal scales (103 vs. 63), and ventral scales (101 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The ranges of these characters are lower in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. than in A. margaritae. The mean number of precloacal pores is lower in A. margaritae than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (14 vs 18). (h) Acanthocercus minutus has a smaller SVL (mean 101 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 234 mm vs. 285 mm). It has higher mean counts of dorsal scales (79 vs. 63), and lower mean counts of ventral scales (78 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The mean number of precloacal pores is higher in A. minutus than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (26 vs 18). (i) Acanthocercus ugandaensis has a smaller SVL (mean 103 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 275 mm vs. 285 mm). A. ugandaensis has lower mean counts of scale rows around midbody (94 vs. 108) and ventral scales (73 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The ranges of these characters are higher in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. than in A. ugandaensis. The mean number of precloacal pores is higher in A. ugandaensis than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. (24 vs 18). Description of the holotype. Adult male (Fig. 2). Measurements: snout–vent length (SVL) 143 mm, tail length (TL) 187 mm, head length (HL) 48 mm, head width (HW) 38 mm, head height (HH) 34 mm. Habitus stout, with a large triangular head distinct from body; nasal scale flat to faintly convex, smooth, oval and situated slightly below canthus rostralis, pierced by round nostril in posterior part of scale, directed laterally. Scales on anterior, lateral, and central parts of head large, but smaller from behind ear opening, half the size of large head scales; head scales unequal in size, not oriented in the same direction, usually smooth, sporadically heavily keeled or with a rough surface, with free anterior margins and only sporadically with sensory pits. Fourteen supralabial scales and twelve infralabial scales on both sides; supraocular scales smooth, twelve scales along the canthus rostralis from nasal to behind the eye; six scales from nasal to anterior margin of eye; parietal shield quadrangular; pineal organ small, visible in posterior part of parietal shield. Ear opening large, but smaller than eye, posterior margin lacking semicircle of spinose mucronate scales; tympanum superficial. No nuchal crest present. Gular scales smooth, flat to faintly convex in the anterior part of the gular area; mucronate and spinose in the posterior part, becoming more spiny and smaller towards gular fold. Dorsal body scales a mix of small and smooth matrix scales, sometimes giving the impression of granular scales, and scattered, pale white-edged, enlarged scales. Large scales keeled, sometimes mucronate or spinose, not arranged in clusters, but rather in seven to eight, very indistinct, transverse rows between limbs. Sixty-four dorsal scales along vertebral column from midpoint of pectoral region to midpoint of pelvic region. Vertebral region covered by a mix of small and large scales, forming a pattern distinct from rest of lateral parts of body, with a large set of vertebral scales strongly keeled to smooth or feebly keeled. Ventral body scales smooth, slightly imbricate at posterior margins, in 89 rows from midpoint of pectoral region to precloacal pores. One hundred twenty-six scale rows around body behind forelimbs; 105 around midbody and 80 around body in front of hind limbs. Precloacal scales in two rows (the more anterior weakly developed), twelve pores in the posterior row and seven pores in the row above. Scales on upper side of forelimb unequal in size and strongly keeled, smooth on underside, upper arm scales somewhat larger than largest dorsal body scales. Relative length of manual digits 4=3>2>5>1, subdigital lamellae keeled and mucronate, 21 under left 4 th finger. Scales on upper side of hind limb keeled to smooth, becoming completely smooth on underside; scales on upper thighs unequal in size, a mix of small and scattered enlarged scales that are as large as the enlarged dorsal body scales. Fourth toe longest, relative length of pedal digits 4>3>2>5>1, subdigital lamellae keeled and mucronate, 23 under left 4 th toe. Tail with indistinct whorls of five scale rings (one ring consists of distinctly smaller scales) in its basal portion, caudal scales keeled and mucronate. First third of tail slightly swollen, scales larger than in other parts of the body, strongly robust and keeled. Distal portion of the tail much thinner and slightly depressed. After formalin fixation and six years of preservation in ethanol (Fig. 2) head dark with some brown to orange scales. Gular region bluish and dark from the mental through the throat, whitish in lateral parts. Black patch on shoulders. Ground color of dorsum grayish to brownish, enlarged scales on upper and lateral parts of body and limbs speckled dirty white. Four to five brownish areola-like markings delimited by white pale circles are visible through the vertebral region. Ventral side of body, limbs and tail dirty grayish, speckled with dark spots. Enlarged scales on upper side of tail base distinctly whitish. Scales becoming more brownish-dirty white striped towards tail tip. Coloration. In displaying males (see Fig. 3), head vibrantly blue; neck, shoulders, body and limbs brownish with a pattern of white and black stripes and speckles; a pale vertebral band from the neck to the tail is present, distinct anteriorly between the flanks, becoming more indistinct and on a brown background posteriorly; enlarged dorsal scales of the lower part of the body yellowish, matrix scales greyish becoming brownish on the hind limbs; first half of the tail yellowish, second half of the tail with dark and lighter blue bands. Ventral parts of the body, limbs and tail dirty whitish with a brown patterning coloration on females in life (see Fig. 5). Shoulders brownish with a black patch, some individuals present a pale blue head. Four dark brown, broad transverse bands between limbs, each interspersed by transverse bands composed of a single row of enlarged yellow scales. Upper and lateral parts of tail with brown and whitish/yellowish bands. Ventral parts of the body, limbs and tail dirty whitish with an extensive dark brown pattern. Gular region of a vibrant blue. Regarding its Angolan congeners, the coloration of displaying males (Fig. 3) is overall more similar to A. cyanocephalus than to A. margaritae. However, in A. cyanocephalus, the blue coloration of the head extends to the neck and shoulders, while in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. the blue is limited to the head. The new species is clearly distinct from A. margaritae, in that the latter species has a blue coloration of the head, forelimbs, flanks of the upper part of the body and second half of the tail (not banded as in A. ceriacoi sp. nov.). Variation. Some variations of the type series are shown in Table 2. Snout-vent length 99–143 mm (mean 123 mm); Tail length 125–187 mm (mean 162 mm), with the ratio TL/SVL 1.26–1.31 (mean 1.32); head length 28–48 mm (mean 39 mm); supralabial scales on the left side 12–14 (mean 13); supraocular scales on the left side 6; temporal scales on the left side 7; scale rows around fore body 121–128 (mean 126); scale rows around hind body 74–87 (mean 80); subdigital lamellae under Fi4 21–23 (mean 21); subdigital lamellae under TOE4 21–23 (mean 22); precloacal pores 17–20 (mean 18). Distribution. Currently, Acanthocercus ceriacoi sp. nov. is only known from the central and northwestern regions of Angola, from central Malanje to Bengo Province in the west and Uíge Province in the north (Fig. 6). It is likely that the species may also be present in the neighboring provinces of Kwanza-Norte and Zaire, as well as in southern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Habitat and Natural History notes. In Cangandala National Park and surrounding areas, the species is commonly found dwelling in trees, several meters above ground. The park lies at an approximate elevation of 1000 m and its climate is similar to that of the Angolan central plateau, with vegetation mostly dominated by miombo woodlands (Fig. 7), with Brachystegia wangermeeana, B. floribunda, Julbernardia paniculata, Erythrophleum africanum, Combretum spp., and Rhus spp. growing on the red clay soils of the park (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). Some small riverine gallery forests also occur in the park. In Uíge Province, the species was found basking on the ground in open-savannah habitat, in an area particularly devoid of trees (Fig. 8). The habitat of this region mainly comprises a mosaic of Zambezian savannah and coffee plantation forests, dominated by the plant genera Hyparrhenia, Celtis, Albizia, Morus and Ficus (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). The female paratype (MHNCUP/REP 860) from Uíge Province, collected in November, was active on the ground around midday. After euthanasia and while preparing the specimen for fixing, three well-developed eggs were found in the abdominal cavity of the specimen.

However, due to their geographic proximity and similar habitat, they are here tentatively identified as the newly described species. Diagnosis. Segmentation of the tail into distinct whorls places the new species in the genus Acanthocercus. Within this genus, heterogeneous body scalation refers it to the cyanogaster / atricollis group and the high density of enlarged trunk scales, in combination with a black patch on the shoulder, place it in the A. atricollis complex. Acanthocercus ceriacoi sp. nov. is a medium sized lizard (mean SVL 122.5 mm [99���143 mm]; mean total length 285 mm [224���330 mm]) for its genus and overall is very similar in morphology to A. cyanocephalus. However, it may be distinguished from all other species of the complex by its meristic characters. The new species has lower scale counts when compared to other species of the A. atricollis complex group (mean scale rows around midbody 108, mean dorsal scale rows 64, mean ventral scale rows 85). In life, displaying males are characterized by a blue coloration of the head; neck, shoulders, body and limbs brownish with a pattern of white and black stripes and speckles; and a pale vertebral band from the neck to the tail, distinct anteriorly between the flanks, becoming more indistinct along a brown background posteriorly. Comparison with other close related Acanthocercus species. Acanthocercus ceriacoi sp. nov. can be distinguished from other taxa of the A. atricollis complex by the following characters (see Table 2): (a) Acanthocercus atricollis has a larger SVL (mean 129 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 302 mm vs. 285 mm). Acanthocercus atricollis presents a blue or green head and ventral surface, in some individuals extending to the body, while in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. the blue is limited to the head. (b) Acanthocercus branchi has a smaller SVL (mean 109 mm vs. 123 mm) and total length (mean 262 mm vs. 285 mm). It has higher mean counts of scale rows around midbody (117 vs. 108), dorsal scales (73 vs. 63), and ventral scales (88 vs. 85) than A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. The ranges of these characters largely overlap in both species, although they are higher in A. branchi than in A. ceriacoi sp. nov.. Ground color of dorsum grayish to brownish, enlarged scales on upper and lateral parts of body and limbs speckled dirty white. Four to five brownish areola-like markings delimited by white pale circles are visible through the vertebral region. Ventral side of body, limbs and tail dirty grayish, speckled with dark spots. Enlarged scales on upper side of tail base distinctly whitish. Scales becoming more brownish-dirty white striped towards tail tip. Coloration. In displaying males (see Fig. 3), head vibrantly blue; neck, shoulders, body and limbs brownish with a pattern of white and black stripes and speckles; a pale vertebral band from the neck to the tail is present, distinct anteriorly between the flanks, becoming more indistinct and on a brown background posteriorly; enlarged dorsal scales of the lower part of the body yellowish, matrix scales greyish becoming brownish on the hind limbs; first half of the tail yellowish, second half of the tail with dark and lighter blue bands. Ventral parts of the body, limbs and tail dirty whitish with a brown patterning coloration on females in life (see Fig. 5). Shoulders brownish with a black patch, some individuals present a pale blue head. Four dark brown, broad transverse bands between limbs, each interspersed by transverse bands composed of a single row of enlarged yellow scales. Upper and lateral parts of tail with brown and whitish/yellowish bands. Ventral parts of the body, limbs and tail dirty whitish with an extensive dark brown pattern. Gular region of a vibrant blue. Regarding its Angolan congeners, the coloration of displaying males (Fig. 3) is overall more similar to A. cyanocephalus than to A. margaritae. However, in A. cyanocephalus, the blue coloration of the head extends to the neck and shoulders, while in A. ceriacoi sp. nov. the blue is limited to the head. The new species is clearly distinct from A. margaritae, in that the latter species has a blue coloration of the head, forelimbs, flanks of the upper part of the body and second half of the tail (not banded as in A. ceriacoi sp. nov.). Variation. Some variations of the type series are shown in Table 2. Snout-vent length 99���143 mm (mean 123 mm); Tail length 125���187 mm (mean 162 mm), with the ratio TL/SVL 1.26���1.31 (mean 1.32); head length 28���48 mm (mean 39 mm); supralabial scales on the left side 12���14 (mean 13); supraocular scales on the left side 6; temporal scales on the left side 7; scale rows around fore body 121���128 (mean 126); scale rows around hind body 74���87 (mean 80); subdigital lamellae under Fi4 21���23 (mean 21); subdigital lamellae under TOE4 21���23 (mean 22); precloacal pores 17���20 (mean 18). Distribution. Currently, Acanthocercus ceriacoi sp. nov. is only known from the central and northwestern regions of Angola, from central Malanje to Bengo Province in the west and U��ge Province in the north (Fig. 6). It is likely that the species may also be present in the neighboring provinces of Kwanza-Norte and Zaire, as well as in southern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Habitat and Natural History notes. In Cangandala National Park and surrounding areas, the species is commonly found dwelling in trees, several meters above ground. The park lies at an approximate elevation of 1000 m and its climate is similar to that of the Angolan central plateau, with vegetation mostly dominated by miombo woodlands (Fig. 7), with Brachystegia wangermeeana, B. floribunda, Julbernardia paniculata, Erythrophleum africanum, Combretum spp., and Rhus spp. growing on the red clay soils of the park (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). Some small riverine gallery forests also occur in the park. In U��ge Province, the species was found basking on the ground in open-savannah habitat, in an area particularly devoid of trees (Fig. 8). The habitat of this region mainly comprises a mosaic of Zambezian savannah and coffee plantation forests, dominated by the plant genera Hyparrhenia, Celtis, Albizia, Morus and Ficus (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). The female paratype (MHNCUP/REP 860) from U��ge Province, collected in November, was active on the ground around midday. The Gulf of Guinea, in the Atlantic coast of Central Africa, has three oceanic islands that arose as part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line. From northeast to southwest these are Príncipe (139 km2), São Tomé (857 km2), and Annobón (17 km2). Although relatively close to the adjacent mainland, the islands have distinct climactic and geomorphologic characteristics, and have remained isolated throughout their geological history. Consequently, they have developed a unique biodiversity, rich in endemic species. We provide an integrated overview of the physical setting of the islands, including their geographic location, geological origin, topography, geology and soils, climate zones, and prevailing wind and ocean currents—key features that underlie the evolution of their biodiversity.

Arthroleptis carquejai Ferreira, 1906 Material (one specimen): One adult female specimen (MHNCUP/ ANF 188, formerly UP-MHNFCP-018586; Fig. S19), collected from Cambondo [-9.16349º, 14.66432º, 394 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown. Comments: Arthroleptis carquejai is an Angolan endemic species, found in the northern part of the country (Marques et al. 2018). The specific epithet carquejai was in honor of Bento Carqueja (1860–1935), a businessman, writer, and professor at APP. The single specimen collected by Newton was used by Ferreira (1906) as the holotype for the species. Ceríaco et al. (2014b) recognized A. carquejai as a valid species belonging to the same group of species as Arthroleptis variabilis Matschie, 1893. The authors also analyzed specimens from the Zoologisches Museum Hamburg collected from ““Roca Nova” (Roça Novo Mundo)”, approximately 135 km from the type locality, and determined them to also be A. carquejai. The species was recently collected in Serra do Pingano, Uíge Province, by Ceríaco et al. (Fig. 4) and Ernst et al. (2020). Marques et al. Grayia smythii (Leach, 1818) Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/ REP 196, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017398; Fig. S73), collected from Cambondo [-9.16349º, 14.66432º, 394 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown. Comments: Grayia smythii is a species found north into southern Sudan, Lake Victoria west to Senegal and southwest to northern Angola (Marques et al. 2018). The label present in the jar reads “ Grayia smithi ” but has no information about its collecting locality. Ferreira (1906) cited a specimen from “Cambondo” which most likely represents this specimen. Lycophidion multimaculatum Boettger, 1888 Material (two specimens): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 169, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017395), collected from Chingo [-11.20000º, 13.85000º, 11 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Sul Province, by Francisco Newton on unknown date; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 326, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017396; Fig. S64), collected from unknown locality, by Francisco Newton in 1903. Comments: Lycophidion multimaculatum has a distribution ranging from Central African Republic to Tanzania and Angola (Chippaux & Jackson 2019). According to Marques et al. (2018), this species possibly exists throughout Angola, including the Cabinda enclave, with the exception of the southwestern desert regions. Ferreira (1904) published records of two adults of “ Lycophidium capense ” with no locality information, commenting that one had “very light color” (likely to match MHNCUP/REP 169) and the other was “almost totally black”; later he also published an adult from “Golungo Alto” (Ferreira 1906). Marques et al. (2018) stated that the majority of records attributed to Lycophidion capense Smith, 1831 from Angola are in fact L. multimaculatum, including the Newton Expedition specimens. Lycophidion meleagre Boulenger, 1893 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 325, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017394; Fig. S63), collected from unknown locality, in September 1903. Comments: Lycophidion meleagre has a disjointed distribution, having been recorded from northwestern Angola, northeastern Tanzania, southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and southeastern Kenya (Marques et al. 2018), although Branch (2018) comments the Tanzanian records need to be critically reviewed. Ferreira (1904) cited a juvenile specimen of “ Lycophidium meleagris ” from “Cabiri”, commenting that it was a very rare species, represented then by only two specimens extant in the Natural History Museum London and one in the Lisbon museum. Psammophis namibensis Broadley, 1975 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/ REP 172, formerly UP-MHNFCP-094983; Fig. S67), collected from unknown locality, date unknown. Comments: Psammophis namibensis is found in the arid regions of southwestern Africa, namely southwestern Angola to western Namibia and Northern Cape Province in South Africa (Marques et al. 2018). P. namibensis was initially described by Broadley (1975) as a subspecies of Psammophis leightoni Boulenger, 1902 but was eventually given full species status (Broadley 2002), however, Taft’s (2018) Master’s thesis found P. namibensis to be a synonym. Causus resimus (Peters, 1862) Material (six specimens): Four adult specimens (MHNCUP/REP 327–330, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017405, 017424, 017406 and 017425 respectively; Fig. S57), collected from unknown locality, date unknown; one juvenile specimen (MHNCUP/REP 331, formerly UP-MHNFCP-095050), collected from unknown locality, date unknown; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 336, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017426), collected from S. Tomé and Príncipe (in error), date unknown. Comments: Causus resimus can be found throughout sub-SaharanAfrica, with a seemingly disjointed distribution (see Marques et al. 2018 for more detail). The species is also known from the coastal savannas and woodlands of western Angola (Marques et al. 2018). Ferreira (1904) cited three adult specimens from “Cazengo”, “Caculo” and “Cabicula”, possibly matching extant specimens MHNCUP/REP 327–330. Additionally, Ferreira (1906) published an adult of “ Causus rhombeatus ” from “Golungo Alto” that we were unable to locate. The Angolan population of C. resimus is very isolated from its counterparts in East Africa, suggesting that it might be different. According to Branch (2018), the molecular phylogeny of Causus is being addressed by Tolley et al. (in prep) and preliminary results indicate cryptic diversity within C. resimus, thus supporting the hypothesis of the Angolan population being distinct. In that case, two different names have been proposed to refer to the species – C. nasalis Stejneger, 1893 and C. resimus var. angolensis Bocage, 1895 (Branch 2018). Dasypeltis palmarum (Leach, 1818) Material (three specimens): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 191, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017420), collected from unknown locality, in 1905; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 192, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017407), collected from Novo Redondo [=Sumbe] [-11.20000º, 13.85000º, 11 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Sul Province, in 1903; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 194, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017408; Fig. S71), collected from unknown locality, date unknown. Comments: Dasypeltis palmarum occurs in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo and western Angola, including the Cabinda enclave (Marques et al. 2018). It was first described as Coluber palmarum from the type locality “in palm trees at Embomma” [=Boma], Democratic Republic of the Congo (Marques et al. 2018). Ferreira published several Dasypeltis scabra (Linnaeus, 1758) (see next account), to which the extant D. palmarum might correspond. Afrixalus osorioi (Ferreira, 1906) Material (three specimens): One adult male, one adult female and one juvenile specimen (MHNCUP/ ANF 212–214, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017307; Fig. S6), collected from Quilombo [-9.33333º, 14.90000º, 744 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown. Comments: MHNCUP/ANF 212–214 are the syntypes used by Ferreira (1906) in the description of Rappia osorioi, a species named in homage to Baltasar Osório (1855-1926), a naturalist from the Museu Bocage. Ceríaco et al. (2014b) analyzed these specimens in a review of the type specimens published by Ferreira (1904, 1906), confirming the species to be valid and found in northwestern Angola. Until very recently, the species had only been recorded from its type locality in Angola (Marques et al. 2018), but field surveys in Serra do Pingano, Uíge Province, uncovered additional records of the species for the country (Ernst et al. 2020; LMPC pers. obs. Panaspis cabindae (Bocage, 1866) Material (two specimens): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 266, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017381), collected from Lucálla [=Lucala] [-9.27268º, 15.25206º, 708 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, in 1903; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 267, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017380; Fig. S37), collected from Catete [-9.11667º, 13.70000º, 21 m a.s.l.] Bengo Province, in September 1903. Comments: Panaspis cabindae is a species with a distribution extending from southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo to southwestern Angola (Marques et al. 2018; Ceríaco et al. 2020b). The presented specimens were cited as “ Ablepharus cabindae, Boc ” by Ferreira (1904) and are the only published records for the species from “Lucala” and “Catete” localities. Recently, Ceríaco et al. (2016a, 2018b, 2020b) and Medina et al. (2016) published new records for the species in Angola, including the first accounts for Bié, Luanda, Uíge, Malanje, Lunda Norte and Huíla provinces. Trachylepis binotata (Bocage, 1867) Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 268, formerly UP-MHNFCP-040729; Fig. S41), collected from unknown locality, date unknown. Comments: Trachylepis binotata is a large arboreal skink found in southwestern Angola and northwestern Namibia (Marques et al. 2018; Butler et al. 2019). Ferreira (1904, 1906) did not cite this specimen; however, the jar’s external tag is noted with the generic identification of “ Mabuia ”, an identification most likely done by him. Without locality information, we cannot assess whether the specimen falls inside the expected distribution range. Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnès, 1818) Material (six specimens): One juvenile specimen (MHNCUP/REP 209), collected from Hocco, Cazengo [-9.35422º, 14.89471º, 573 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 210), collected from Cabiri [-8.92125º, 13.66654º, 31 m a.s.l.] Bengo Province, in 1903; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 211), collected from Lué (undetermined locality) in 1903; two adult specimens (MHNCUP/REP 212–213; Fig. S30), collected from Catete [-9.11667º, 13.70000º, 21 m a.s.l.] Bengo Province, in 1903; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/ REP 216, formerly UP-MHNFCP-094991), collected from Rio Luinha [-9.26667º, 14.53333º, 237 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, in 1904. Comments: Hemidactylus mabouia is commonly found in northern Angola and along the coastline of the country (Marques et al. 2018; Ceríaco et al. 2020a). This species is frequently associated with urban habitats and it is one of the most widespread Hemidactylus species (and geckos in general), with a broad distribution in sub-Saharan Africa, especially south of the Sahel (Ceríaco et al. 2020a). Ferreira (1904) cited female specimens from “Cabiri”, “Serra de Stombe” and “Catete” and an additional adult from “Cambondo” (Ferreira 1906). Extant in MHNC-UP exist specimens from both “Cabiri” (MHNCUP/REP 210) and “Catete” (MHNCUP/REP 212–213). Agarwal et al. (2021) recently revised H. mabouia and found it to comprise as many as 20 putative species-level lineages. Ceríaco et al. Phrynomantis newtoni Ceríaco, Santos, Marques, Bauer, & Tiutenko 2021 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/ ANF 194, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017327; Fig. S5), collected from Chingo (Novo Redondo) [-11.20000º, 13.85000º, 11 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Sul Province, in 1903. Comments: Phrynomantis newtoni is a species known from low elevation coastal areas of southern and central Angola, ranging from Benguela to Luanda Province (Ceríaco et al. 2021). Boulenger had previously described the Angolan specimens as a Phrynomantis bifasciatus (Smith, 1847) variety – “Var. C” (Boulenger 1882). Ferreira (1904) cited this specimen as an adult “ Phrynomantis bifasciatus ” of “Boulenger’s Var. C”. A recent study by Ceríaco et al. (2021) selected MHNC-UP/ANF194 as the holotype of the new taxon P. newtoni, honoring Francisco Newton as its collector and an important naturalist explorer.

Comments: Amietia angolensis is known from almost all of Angola, but chiefly from the northern and western regions (Marques et al. 2018). Ferreira (1904) cited two adult specimens from “N’dalla Tando” and possibly one from “Zembe”, matching the records for MHNCUP/ANF 192 and MHNCUP/ANF 193, ANF 195–196. The remaining extant specimens have no locality associated. A. angolensis has been restricted to Angolan populations by Channing & Baptista (2013) and Channing et al. (2016), although it might have a broader distribution (Marques et al. 2018). Ernst et al. (2020) recently cited the species from Serra do Pingano, Uíge Province. Comments: Bitis gabonica is a large-bodied forest adder (Barlow et al. 2019), known mainly from the forests and savannas of West, Central and East Africa and with a distribution ranging from Benin to northern Angola and northeastern KwaZulu-Natal (see Marques et al. 2018 for more detail). It is one of five currently recognized species in the subgenus Macrocerastes (Ceríaco et al. 2020c). From the regions in which Newton collected, this species is known from N’dalatando, Kwanza Norte Province (Marques et al. 2018). Boaedon angolensis Bocage, 1895 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 165, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017401; Fig. S61), collected from Bahia dos Tigres [= Baía dos Tigres] (in error) [-16.58559º, 11.82709º, 98 m a.s.l.] Namibe Province, by Francisco Newton in 1905. Comments: Boaedon angolensis is a species endemic to Angola that occurs in the highlands of Cuando Cubango, Uíge, Malanje, Huambo, Kwanza Norte and Huíla provinces (potentially Benguela and Cunene as well) (Marques et al. 2018; Hallermann et al. 2020). It was recently revised by Hallermann et al. (2020) as part of a larger study on the Boaedon genus in Angola. The authors revalidated the taxon as a full species and designated a neotype, given that the original type specimens used to describe Boaedon lineatus var. angolensis Bocage, 1895 had been lost in 1978 MBL fire. Pachydactlylus rangei (Andersson, 1908) Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 217, formerly UP-MHNFCP-095008; Fig. S31), collected from Bahia dos Tigres [= Baía dos Tigres] [-16.58559º, 11.82709º, 98 m a.s.l.] Namibe Province, in 1905. Comments: Pachydactylus rangei occurs in Namibe Province, southwestern Angola (Marques et al. 2018). This species was never cited by Ferreira (1904, 1906) in any of his papers. MHNCUP/REP 217 locality matches the species distribution range in the country. P. rangei was first described as Palmatogecko rangei Andersson, 1908, being the type species for the genus, but it was later synonymized with Pachydactylus by Bauer & Lamb (2005). The species was recently collected by Luís M. P. Ceríaco and Mariana P. Comments: Hyperolius bocagei is a species found in northeast and western Angola (Marques et al. 2018). Ferreira (1904) cites male and female specimens (no precise number) of “ Rappia bocagei (Stenid.) ” from “Cacuaco”, corresponding to specimens MHNCUP/ANF 178–179.Another specimen of this species was used by Ferreira (1906) to describe a new variety – R. bocagei var. maculata – from “Golungo Alto”. MHNCUP/ANF 219 might correspond to the cited specimen (see Ceríaco et al. 2014b). The label for specimen MHNCUP/ANF 219 indicates the locality “Bahia dos Tigres”, a desert area on the southern coast of Namibe Province. Sclerophrys funerea (Bocage, 1866) Material (one specimen): One juvenile specimen (MHNCUP/ ANF 161, formerly UP-MHNFCP-094970; Fig. S2), collected from Cabiri [-8.92125º, 13.66654º, 31 m a.s.l.] Bengo Province, in 1903. Comments: Sclerophrys funerea is a species known from west-central Africa, from Gabon to Uganda and south to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola (Marques et al. 2018). Ferreira (1904, 1906) cited several Bufo funereus, with and without locality information data. Specimen MHNCUP/ANF 161 was labeled as B. regularis. After reexamining the extant specimens previously identified as B. funereus by Ferreira, we found that most of them to correspond to either S. regularis (Reuss, 1833) or S. pusilla (Mertens, 1937) (see accounts below). The author mistakenly identified S. funerea as S. regularis most likely due to the difficult and confusing characters used to differentiate S. funerea from all remaining Sclerophrys. Dasypeltis cf. scabra (Linnaeus, 1758) Material (two specimens): Two adult specimens (MHNCUP/REP 193,195, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017410 and 017409 respectively; Fig. S72), collected from unknown locality, date unknown. Comments: Dasypeltis scabra is a savanna and grassland species widely distributed in East African savannas and known from all of Angola, apart from the southwestern desert (Bates & Broadley 2018; Marques et al. 2018). Ferreira (1904) cited several “adult and semi-adult” specimens of Dasypeltis scabra with no indication of locality. The author noted that one of the specimens presented an “unusual melanistic coloration” (possibly MHNCUP/REP 195). Later, Ferreira (1906) published two adult specimens, one “dark brown with imperceptible black drawings” (no locality data; likely MHNCUP/REP 193) and another from “Cambondo” as “ D. scabra var inornata ” (junior synonym of D. scabra). Recently, Bates & Broadley (2018) reviewed Dasypeltis from north-eastern Africa and southwestern Arabia, describing three new species previously considered as part of D. scabra. Branch (2018) listed D. confusa Trapé and Mané 2006 as present in Angola, following Bates and Broadley’s (2018) claim that the species’ distribution extended to Angola. Polemon collaris (Peters, 1881) Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 170, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017414; Fig. S60), collected from Golungo Alto [-9.13333º, 14.76667º, 666 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown. Comments: Polemon collaris is a forest dwelling species found from Nigeria to Uganda and south into western Angola (Branch 2018; Marques et al. 2018). The label present in the jar reads “ Microsoma collare ” but has no information regarding the collecting locality, however Ferreira (1906) cited an adult specimen of Bocage’s (1895) “form B ” from “Golungo Alto”, which most likely represents this specimen. After comparing Bocage’s original description and plate to MHNCUP/REP 170, we find the specimen to match the same morphology. Boulenger (1905), de Witte & Laurent (1947) and Hellmich (1957) cited specimens from the same locality. Recently, Portilo et al. Atractaspis bibronii Smith, 1849 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 321; Fig. S58), collected from Distrito de Mossamedes [=Moçâmedes] [-15.20000º, 12.15000º, 24 m a.s.l.] Namibe Province, date unknown. Comments: Atractaspis bibronii is known from sub-Saharan Africa countries, ranging from Kenya and southern Somalia south to Zimbabwe, west to Angola, Namibia and Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as eastern populations of South Africa and Eswatini (Marques et al. 2018). Portillo et al. (2019), in a recent review of the evolutionary history of the subfamily Atractaspidinae, found that several lineages of A. bibronii differed significantly from each other and are likely to represent several cryptic species, which is not surprising given the species’ extensive geographic distribution. Shortly thereafter, Zaher et al. (2019) recognized Atractaspididae as a full family. Comments: Chondrodactylus pulitzerae occurs along the Angolan coast, mainly in the south of the country (Marques et al. 2018), with Caop Velha, Bengo Province, being the known northern limit of distribution (Ceríaco et al. 2017). Heinz (2011) demonstrated that C. pulitzerae was the correct name for the Angolan lineage. Specimens from the Newton expedition were never cited before. MHNCUP/REP 201–205 specimens’ jar was labelled as “ Pachydactulus bibroni (Smith) Newton Bahia dos Tigres 1905 ” and “11 Baía dos Tigres 1905”. Comments: Boaedon bocagei is an Angolan endemic species that is currently known from the coastal lowlands of the country, namely Luanda, Bengo, Zaire and Kwanza Sul provinces (Hallermann et al. 2020). Ferreira (1904) reported adult and juvenile specimens of “ Boodon lineatu s” from “Novo Redondo” (MHNC-UP/REP167), “Lembu (Serra de Selles)” and “Cacullo” and later a specimen from “Rio Luinha” (Ferreira 1906). Boaedon bocagei was recently described as a new species by Hallermann et al. (2020) in their revision of the Boaedon from Angola. Atractaspis congica Peters, 1877 Material (four specimens): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 320, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017391; Fig. S59), collected from unknown locality, date unknown; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 323), collected from unknown locality, date unknown; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 324, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017393), collected from N’Dalla Gando [=N’dalatando] [-9.30000º, 14.91667º, 782 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, in August 1903; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 335), collected from unknown locality, date unknown. Comments: Atractaspis congica is known from central Africa, occurring from Cameroon to Zambia and is widely spread throughout Angola (Marques et al. 2018; Chippaux & Jackson 2019). From the Newton Expedition were published two adult specimens, one from “Cazengo” and one from “Golungo Alto”, possibly matching specimens MHNCUP/REP 320, REP 323 and REP 335 (Ferreira 1904, 1906). This species was first described from “Chinchoxo” (Cabinda enclave) by Peters (1877). Portillo et al. Naja nigricincta Bogert, 1940 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 341, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017419; Fig. S69), collected from África Ocidental [= “Occidental Africa”] (impossible to georeference), date unknown. Comments: Naja nigricincta occurs in southwestern Angola as well as central and northern Namibia (Marques et al. 2018). Branch (2018) refered to Angolan records of this species as Naja (Afronaja) nigricincta nigricincta, while Marques et al. (2018) followed Wüster et al. (2007) and their molecular results, using N. nigricincta. This specimen was not cited by Ferreira (1904, 1906). Hemidactylus cf. bayonii Bocage, 1893 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 208; Fig. S28), collected from Ambaca [-9.26667º, 15.18333º, 738 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown. Comments: Hemidactylus bayonii is an Angolan endemic species first described by Bocage (1893b). Until recently, it was only known from the regions surrounding the Kwanza River (Marques et al. 2018). Ceríaco et al. (2020a), in a review of the genus Hemidactylus from Angola, commented on the systematics of H. bayonii and designated a neotype for the species. The present specimen was never cited in any of Ferreira’s (1904, 1906) papers, nor included in Ceríaco et al. Xenopus petersii Bocage, 1895 Material (four specimens): Two adult specimens (MHNCUP/ ANF 171–172), collected from unknown locality in 1904; two adult specimens (MHNCUP/ ANF 228–229, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017354 and UP-MHNFCP-052197; Fig. S1), collected from unknown locality, date unknown. Comments: Xenopus petersii is widespread in western and central Angola, southern Gabon to western Democratic Republic of the Congo and northern Namibia (Marques et al. 2018). A recent study by Furman et al. (2015) on the phylogeny of the X. laevis (Daudin, 1903) group recognized X. petersii as a valid species and supported the revalidation of X. poweri Hewitt, 1927. According to the distribution provided by the authors, X. petersii occurs in western and central parts of Angola, whereas X. poweri is limited to eastern and southeastern regions (Furman et al. 2015; Conradie et al. 2016; Marques et al. 2018). Sclerophrys pusilla (Mertens, 1937) Material (eleven specimens): One juvenile specimen (MHNCUP/ ANF 114, formerly UP-MHNFCP-094971), collected from Unguay [=Nonguai] [-15.76667º, 12.01667º, 45 m a.s.l.] Namibe Province, on June 1904; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/ ANF 163), collected from unknown locality in 1904; three young adult specimens and two adults (MHNCUP/ ANF 166–170), collected from unknown locality in 1904; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/ ANF 189), collected from Hocco [-9.35422º, 14.89471º, 573 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown; three adult specimens (MHNCUP/ ANF 230–232, formerly UP-MHNFCP-094969; Fig. S3), collected from unknown locality, date unknown. Comments: Sclerophrys pusilla is a species that is widespread across western Angola, with the exception of the desert areas in the southwestern regions the country (Marques et al. 2018). Poynton et al. (2016) reinstated S. pusilla as a valid species, which was long considered as a synonym of S. maculata (Hallowell, 1854), in the eastern central, eastern and southern parts of Africa (Poynton et al. 2016). Ferreira (1904, 1906) did not cite any Bufo maculatus (Hallowell, 1854) and did not identify the majority of these specimens. Specimen MHNCUP/ANF 189 constitutes the first published record of the species for Kwanza Norte Province and specimen MHNCUP/ANF 114 is the first published record for that region of Namibe Province.
