The normalized $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) cross section ratio has been measured using the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber from the reaction threshold to $30$~MeV. The fissionTPC is a two-volume MICROMEGAS time projection chamber that allows for full three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles from neutron-induced fission. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, where the neutron energy is determined from neutron time-of-flight. The $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) ratio reported here is the first cross section measurement made with the fissionTPC, and will provide new experimental data for evaluation of the $^{238}$U(n,f) cross section, an important standard used in neutron-flux measurements. Use of a development target in this work prevented the determination of an absolute normalization, to be addressed in future measurements. Instead, the measured cross section ratio has been normalized to ENDF/B-VIII.$\beta$5 at 14.5 MeV.

A digital data acquisition system has been combined with a double Frisch gridded ionization chamber for use at both moderated and unmoderated neutron sources at the Los Alamos Neutron Science (LANSCE) facility. The high efficiency of the instrument combined with intense LANSCE beams and new acquisition system permits fission output measurements across 11 orders of magnitude incident neutron energy. The acquisition and analysis system is presented along with the first in-beam performance tests of the setup.

The Neutron Induced Fission Fragment Tracking Experiment (NIFFTE) collaboration is developing a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to measure neutron-induced fission cross sections with unprecedented accuracy. Modifying TPC technology for nuclear physics applications is a challenging endeavor, and frequent testing and evaluation is required to ensure that all components are behaving as expected. In-beam tests of the NIFFTE TPC at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LAN-SCE) commenced in 2010. An overview of the NIFFTE TPC experiments performed at LANSCE will be presented, along with preliminary performance results.

The average total kinetic energy $(\overline{TKE})$ in $^{239}\mathrm{Pu}(n,f)$ has been measured for incident neutron energies between 0.5 and 50 MeV. The experiment was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) using the neutron time-of-flight technique, and the kinetic energy of fission fragments post-neutron emission was measured in a double Frisch-gridded ionization chamber. This represents the first experimental study of the energy dependence of $\overline{TKE}$ in $^{239}\mathrm{Pu}$ above neutron energies of 6 MeV.

A fission TPC is being developed to measure the energy-dependent neutron induced fission cross sections of the major and minor actinides to an accuracy of better than 1%. Achieving such an accuracy will depend in part, on the ability of the TPC to provide precise tracking and identification of charged particles. A measurement of the α -decay to spontaneous fission branching ratio of 252 Cf used to benchmark the performance of the TPC will be discussed.

The NIFFTE collaboration has developed a time projection chamber to study neutron-induced fission events in actinide targets by tracking and identifying fission fragments in three dimensions as they traverse a gas volume. This paper will provide an overview of the analysis software that has been developed by the NIFFTE collaboration, as well as examples of its success in analyzing data.

When fully instrumented, the NIFFTE Time Projection Chamber will consist of nearly 6000 channels, each of which requires a preamplifier, ADC, and digital readout. To minimize channel cost and size, the EtherDAQ data acquisition system utilizes off-the-shelf FPGA and Ethernet fiber technology. This application of commercially-available components made it possible to meet the requirements of the DAQ system with considerably less development cost and time than the a customized ASIC solution, and provides considerable flexibility in the final design. The detailed design and current status of the preamplifier and EtherDAQ boards will be discussed.

The general properties needed in targets (sources) for high precision, high accuracy measurements are reviewed. The application of these principles to the problem of developing targets for the Fission TPC is described. Longer term issues, such as the availability of actinide materials, improved knowledge of energy losses and straggling and the stability of targets during irradiation are also discussed.

Ratios of equilibrium charge-state yields for singly to doubly ionized He-3 ions at an energy of 420 MeV were measured using the Grand Raiden magnetic spectrometer at RCNP. Targets with atomic numbers of 6, 12, 28, 40, 50 and 82 were used. It is found that theoretical calculations for atomic electron-capture and stripping cross sections, which have been successful in describing the data up to beam energies of 200 MeV, are also applicable at this higher energy. However, where at the lower energies the stripping cross sections were calculated with a combination of models by Bohr and Gillespie, the best description of the data at E(He-3) = 420 MeV is obtained when using only the model by Gillespie. The experimental results are also compared with calculations using the code CHARGE, originally developed for fast, heavy (Z > 29) projectiles, to test the extrapolation to low-Z projectiles. The Nuclear Structure Laboratory (NSL) at the University of Notre Dame installed its Browne–Buechner spectrograph in the early 1970s for highly accurate energy measurements of nuclear reactions. Current renovation and upgrading of this spectrograph will enable operation of the magnet in a gas-filled mode, in particular for the study of nuclear reactions with low cross-sections of interest in nuclear astrophysics. One of the principle issues shared by measurements of extremely low abundances in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and nuclear astrophysics is the discrimination between the nuclei of interest and often very intense isobaric background. Recently the AMS technique of the gas-filled magnet has very successfully been used at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) to overcome this in the study of both environmental noble gas traces ( 39 Ar) and the measurement of cross-sections of interest in stellar nucleosynthesis i.e. the 62 Ni( n , γ) 63 Ni reaction. We hope to extend these techniques further to the observations of astrophysically important reactions such as 40 Ca(α, γ) 44 Ti and 78 Kr(α, γ) 82 Sr.

Background: Stellar electron-capture reactions on medium-heavy nuclei are important for many astrophysical phenomena, including core-collapse and thermonuclear supernov\ae{} and neutron stars. Estimates of electron-capture rates rely on accurate estimates of Gamow-Teller strength distributions, which can be extracted from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate beam energies. Measured Gamow-Teller transition strength distributions for stable pf-shell nuclei are reasonably well reproduced by theoretical calculations in the shell model, except for lower mass nuclei where admixtures from the sd shell can become important.Purpose: This paper presents a ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}$ charge-exchange experiment on $^{45}\mathrm{Sc}$, one of the lightest pf-shell nuclei. The focus was on Gamow-Teller transitions to final states at low excitation energies, which are particularly important for accurate estimations of electron-capture rates at relatively low stellar densities. The experimental results are compared with various theoretical models.Method: The double-differential cross section for the $^{45}\mathrm{Sc}(t,^{3}\mathrm{He}+\ensuremath{\gamma})$ reaction was measured using the NSCL Coupled-Cyclotron Facility at $115\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/u$. Gamow-Teller contributions to the excitation-energy spectra were extracted by means of a multipole-decomposition analysis. $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays emitted due to the deexcitation of $^{45}\mathrm{Ca}$ were measured using GRETINA to allow for the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths from very weak transitions at low excitation energies.Results: Gamow-Teller transition strengths to $^{45}\mathrm{Ca}$ were extracted up to an excitation energy of 20 MeV, and that to the first excited state in $^{45}\mathrm{Ca}$ at 174 keV was extracted from the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray measurement, which, even though weak, is important for the astrophysical applications and dominates under certain stellar conditions. Shell-model calculations performed in the pf shell-model space with the GXPF1A, KB3G, and FPD6 interactions did not reproduce the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution, and a calculation using the quasiparticle random phase approximation that is often used in astrophysical simulations also could not reproduce the experimental strength distribution.Conclusions: Theoretical models aimed at describing Gamow-Teller transition strengths from nuclei in the lower pf shell for the purpose of estimating electron-capture rates for astrophysical simulations require further development. The likely cause for the relatively poor performance of the shell-model theory is the influence of intruder configurations from the sd shell. The combination of charge-exchange experiments at intermediate beam energy and high-resolution $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray detection provides a powerful technique to identify weak transitions to low-lying final states that are nearly impossible to identify without the coincidences. Identification of these weak low-lying transitions is important for providing accurate electron-capture rates for astrophysical simulations.

The Neutron Induced Fission Fragment Tracking Experiment (NIFFTE) is a double-sided Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with micromegas readout designed to measure the energy-dependent neutron-induced fission cross sections of the major and minor actinides with unprecedented accuracy. The NIFFTE project addresses the challenge of minimizing major sources of systematic uncertainties from previous fission chamber measurements such as: target and beam non-uniformities, misidentification of alpha and light charged particles as fission fragments, and uncertainties inherent to the reference standards used. In-beam tests of the NIFFTE TPC at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) started in 2010 and have continued in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Beta-delayed proton emission from nuclides in the neighborhood of 100Sn was studied at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The nuclei were produced by fragmentation of a 120 MeV/nucleon 112Sn primary beam on a Be target. Beam purification was provided by the A1900 Fragment Separator and the Radio Frequency Fragment Separator. The fragments of interest were identified and their decay was studied with the NSCL Beta Counting System (BCS) in conjunction with the Segmented Germanium Array (SeGA). The nuclei 96Cd, 98Ing, 98Inm and 99In were identified as beta-delayed proton emitters, with branching ratios bp = 5.5(40)%, 5.5+3 -2%, 19(2)% and 0.9(4)%, respectively. The bp for 89Ru, 91,92Rh, 93Pd and 95Ag were deduced for the first time with bp = 3+1.9 -1.7%, 1.3(5)%, 1.9(1)%, 7.5(5)% and 2.5(3)%, respectively. The bp = 22(1)% for 101Sn was deduced with higher precision than previously reported. The impact of the newly measured bp values on the composition of the type-I X-ray burst ashes was studied.

We report on the first experimental study of quadrupole collectivity in the very neutron-rich nuclei (47,48)Ar using intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. These nuclei are located along the path from doubly magic Ca to collective S and Si isotopes, a critical region of shell evolution and structural change. The deduced B(E2) transition strengths are confronted with large-scale shell-model calculations in the sdpf shell using the state-of-the-art SDPF-Uand EPQQM effective interactions. The comparison between experiment and theory indicates that a shell-model description of Ar isotopes around N=28 remains a challenge.

We present a novel technique for studying the quenching of shell gaps in exotic isotopes. The method is based on extracting Gamow-Teller (ΔL=0, ΔS=1) transition strengths [B(GT)] to low-lying states from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate beam energies. These Gamow-Teller strengths are very sensitive to configuration mixing between cross-shell orbitals, and this technique thus provides an important complement to other tools currently used to study cross-shell mixing. This work focuses on the N=8 shell gap. We populated the ground and 2.24 MeV 0+ states in 12Be using the 12B(1+) (7Li, 7Be) reaction at 80 MeV/u in inverse kinematics. Using the ground-state B(GT) value from β-decay measurements (0.184±0.007) as a calibration, the B(GT) for the transition to the second 0+ state was determined to be 0.214±0.051. Comparing the extracted Gamow-Teller strengths with shell-model calculations, it was determined that the wave functions of the first and second 0+ states in 12Be are composed of 25±5% and 60±5% (0s)4(0p)8 configurations, respectively.

A new technique to measure (p,n) charge-exchange reactions in inverse kinematics at intermediate energies on unstable isotopes was successfully developed and used to study the (56)Ni(p,n) reaction at 110 MeV/u. Gamow-Teller transition strengths from (56)Ni leading to (56)Cu were obtained and compared with shell-model predictions in the pf shell using the KB3G and GXPF1A interactions. The calculations with the GXPF1A interaction reproduce the experimental strength distribution much better than the calculations that employed the KB3G interaction, indicating deficiencies in the spin-orbit and proton-neutron residual potentials for the latter. The results are important for improving the description of electron-capture rates on nuclei in the iron region, which are important for modeling the late evolution of core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae.

Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions are mediated by the στ operator. Owing to its simplicity and also its spin‐isospin nature, GT transitions play key roles in the studies of nuclear structure as well as astro‐nuclear processes. In violent neutrino‐induced reactions at the core‐collapse stage of type II supernovae, Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions starting from stable as well as unstable pf‐shell nuclei play important roles. We study GT transitions starting from 47Ti in a high‐resolution (3He,t) charge‐exchange reactions at 0° and at an intermediate incident energy of 140 MeV/nucleon at Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka. Individual GT transitions up to high excitations were observed. Assuming the isospin symmetry for the strengths of Tz = ±3/2→±1/2 analogous GT transitions, we can deduce the detailed strength distribution starting from mirror unstable nucleus 47Mn.

We report on the first successful extraction of a β+ Gamow-Teller strength distribution from a radioactive isotope in an intermediate-energy charge-exchange experiment in inverse kinematics. The (7Li,7Be+γ(429 keV)) reaction at 100A MeV was used to measure Gamow-Teller transition strengths from 34P to states in 34Si. The results show that little mixing occurs between sd and pf shell configurations for the low-lying 0+ and 2+ states even though 34Si neighbors the island of inversion and low-lying 2ℏω intruder states exist. Shell-model calculations in the sdpf model space are consistent with these findings.

The decay properties of rp‐process nuclei in the vicinity of 100Sn have been studied at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). The measured β‐decay half‐life for 100Sn is 0.55−0.31+0.70 s, in agreement with a previous measurement. In 98In, the β‐decay of the ground state plus that of a long lived isomer were observed with half‐lives of 47(13) ms and 0.66(40) s respectively. The half‐life of 96Cd, measured for the first time, is 1.03−0.21+0.24 s; however, the existence of a predicted isomeric state in this nucleus could not be confirmed. Additionally, a gamma cascade de‐exciting a μ‐isomer in the odd‐odd nucleus 96Ag was observed. The implications of the measured half‐life of 96Cd on the calculated rp‐process final abundances are discussed.

The {beta}-decay properties of the N=Z nuclei {sup 96}Cd, {sup 98}In, and {sup 100}Sn have been studied. These nuclei were produced at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory by fragmenting a 120 MeV/nucleon {sup 112}Sn primary beam on a Be target. The resulting radioactive beam was filtered in the A1900 and the newly commissioned Radio Frequency Fragment Separator to achieve a purity level suitable for decay studies. The observed production cross sections of these nuclei are lower than predicted by factors of 10-30. The half-life of {sup 96}Cd, which was the last experimentally unknown waiting point half-life of the astrophysical rp process, is 1.03{sub -0.21}{sup +0.24} s. The implications of the experimental T{sub 1/2} value of {sup 96}Cd on the abundances predicted by rp process calculations and the origin of A=96 isobars such as {sup 96}Ru are explored.
