Modern optical communication technology can realize a large-scale multilevel (or M-ary) optical signal. Investigating the quantum mechanical nature of such a large-scale M-ary optical signal is essential for a unified understanding of quantum information science and optical communication technology. This article focuses on the quantum-mechanical non-orthogonality for a collection of pure quantum states and proposes a non-orthogonality index based on the least squares error criterion in quantum detection theory. First, we define the index for linearly independent signals, and the proposed index is analyzed through numerical simulations. Next, the index is applied to a highly large-scale M-ary phase-shift keying (PSK) coherent state signal. Furthermore, the index is compared with the capacity of the pure state channel with the PSK signal. As a result, it is shown that a highly large-scale M-ary PSK coherent state signal exhibits a quantum nature even when the signal transmission power is very high. Thus, the theoretical characterization of a highly large-scale M-ary coherent state signal based on the proposed index will be the first step toward a better understanding of cutting-edge optical communication technologies such as the quantum stream cipher Y00.

In the present paper, we aim to develop a formal quantum logic theory of the interplay between conscious and unconscious processes of the human mind, a goal that has already been envisaged in quantum cognition; in doing so, we will show how the interplay between formal language and metalanguage allows for characterizing pure quantum states as infinite singletons: in the case of the spin observable, we obtain an equation defining a modality that is then re-interpreted as an abstract projection operator. By including a temporal parameter in the equations and by defining a modal negative operator, we derive an intuitionistic-like negation, for which the non-contradiction law is seen as an equivalent of the quantum uncertainty. Building on the psychoanalytic theory of Bi-Logic by Matte Blanco, we use modalities in interpreting the emergence of conscious representations from an unconscious one, and we demonstrate that this description fits well with Freud’s view of the role of negation in mental processes. Psychoanalysis, where affect plays a prominent role in shaping not only conscious, but also unconscious representations, is therefore seen as a suitable model to expand the domain of quantum cognition to the broader field of affective quantum cognition.

We bring together in one place some of the main results and applications from our recent work on quantum information theory, in which we have brought techniques from operator theory, operator algebras, and graph theory for the first time to investigate the topic of distinguishability of sets of quantum states in quantum communication, with particular reference to the framework of one-way local quantum operations and classical communication (LOCC). We also derive a new graph-theoretic description of distinguishability in the case of a single-qubit sender.

Due to the presence of a strong spin–orbit interaction, hole qubits in germanium are increasingly being considered as candidates for quantum computing. These objects make it possible to create electrically controlled logic gates with the basic properties of scalability, a reasonable quantum error correction, and the necessary speed of operation. In this paper, using the methods of quantum-mechanical calculations and considering the non-collinear magnetic interactions, the quantum states of the system 2D structure of Ge in the presence of even and odd numbers of holes were investigated. The spatial localizations of hole states were calculated, favorable quantum states were revealed, and the magnetic structural characteristics of the system were analyzed.

A novel link between monotone metric tensors and actions of suitable extensions of the unitary group on the manifold of faithful quantum states is presented here by means of three illustrative examples related with the Bures-Helstrom metric tensor, the Wigner-Yanase metric tensor, and the Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori metric tensor., 16 pages. The fermionic signature operator is constructed in Rindler space-time. It is shown to be an unbounded self-adjoint operator on the Hilbert space of solutions of the massive Dirac equation. In two-dimensional Rindler space-time, we prove that the resulting fermionic projector state coincides with the Fulling-Rindler vacuum. Moreover, the fermionic signature operator gives a covariant construction of general thermal states, in particular of the Unruh state. The fermionic signature operator is shown to be well-defined in asymptotically Rindler space-times. In this work, we discuss the failure of the principle of truth functionality in the quantum formalism. By exploiting this failure, we import the formalism of N-matrix theory and non-deterministic semantics to the foundations of quantum mechanics. This is done by describing quantum states as particular valuations associated with infinite non-deterministic truth tables. This allows us to introduce a natural interpretation of quantum states in terms of a non-deterministic semantics. Shrinking spintronic devices to the nanoscale ultimately requires localized control of individual atomic magnetic moments. At these length scales, the exchange interaction plays important roles, such as in the stabilization of spin-quantization axes, the production of spin frustration, and creation of magnetic ordering. Here, we demonstrate the precise control of the exchange bias experienced by a single atom on a surface, covering an energy range of 4 orders of magnitude. The exchange interaction is continuously tunable from milli-eV to micro-eV by adjusting the separation between a spin-1/2 atom on a surface and the magnetic tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. We seamlessly combine inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and electron spin resonance to map out the different energy scales. This control of exchange bias over a wide span of energies provides versatile control of spin states, with applications ranging from precise tuning of quantum state properties, to strong exchange bias for local spin doping. In addition, we show that a time-varying exchange interaction generates a localized ac magnetic field that resonantly drives the surface spin. The static and dynamic control of the exchange interaction at the atomic scale provides a new tool to tune the quantum states of coupled-spin systems. Fil: Yang, Kai. We study algorithmic randomness properties for probability measures on Cantor space. We say that a measure $\mu$ on the space of infinite bit sequences is ML absolutely continuous if the non-ML-random bit sequences form a null set with respect to~$\mu$. We think of this as a weak randomness notion for measures. We begin with examples, and provide a robustness property related to Solovay tests. Our main work connects our weak randomness notion to the growth of the initial segment complexity for measures~$\mu$; the latter is defined as a $\mu$-average over the complexity of strings of the same length. We show that a maximal growth implies our weak randomness property, but also that both implications of the Levin-Schnorr theorem fail. We discuss $C$-triviality and $K$-triviality for measures and relate these two notions with each other. Here triviality means that the growth of initial segment complexity is as slow as possible. We show that full Martin-L\"of randomness of a measure implies ML absolute continuity; the converse fails because only the latter property is compatible with having atoms. In a final section we consider weak randomness relative to a general ergodic computable measure. We seek appropriate effective versions of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem and the Brudno theorem where the bit sequences are replaced by measures. Two unitarily equivalent quantum states have the same von Neumann entropy, but not vice versa. In the note, we give a sufficient and necessary condition of unitary equivalence of quantum states associated with the von Neumann entropy. Let S be the von Neumann entropy and I n the maximal mixed state. We show that for quantum states ρ , σ , the state ρ is unitarily equivalent to σ if and only if S ( λ ρ + μ I n ) = S ( λ σ + μ I n ) for all λ , μ ∈ [ 0 , 1 ] with λ + μ = 1 .

We start with the Heisenberg–Weyl algebra and after the definitions of the Fock states we give the definition of the coherent state of this group. This is followed by the exposition of the SU (2) and SU (1, 1) algebras and their coherent states. From there we go on describing the binomial state and its extensions as realizations of the SU (2) group. This is followed by considering the negative binomial states, and some squeezed states as realizations of the SU (1, 1) group. Generation schemes based on physical systems are mentioned for some of these states.

Let H be a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. The aim of this paper is to prove that every transformation on the space of all density operators on H which preserves the relative entropy is implemented by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator on H .

More than 80 years passed since the first publication on entangled quantum states. In this period of time the concept of spookily interacting quantum states became an emerging field of science. After various experiments proving the existence of such non-classical states, visionary ideas were put forward to exploit entanglement in quantum information science and technology. These novel concepts have not yet come out of the experimental stage, mostly because of the lack of suitable, deterministic sources of entangled quantum states. Among many systems under investigation, semiconductor quantum dots are particularly appealing emitters of on-demand, single polarization-entangled photon-pairs. Although, it was originally believed that quantum dots must exhibit a limited degree of entanglement related to numerous decoherence effects present in the solid-state. Recent studies invalidated the premise of unavoidable entanglement degrading effects. We review the relevant experiments which have led to these important discoveries and discuss the remaining challenges for the anticipated quantum technologies.

We present a quantum mechanical model to evaluate the time evolution of quantum states of light in an electro-optic phase modulator (EOPM). The phase modulator is analogous to a multilevel atomic system with equally spaced energy levels, each of which corresponds to the sidebands of the phase modulated optical field. Using perturbation theory, we solve the equations governing the interaction of the optical field with a modulating field both with and without phase velocity mismatch. A unitary operator that evolves any given quantum state allows us to evaluate the response of EOPM for single photon, coherent and squeezed states. We apply these results to the analysis of frequency coded quantum key distribution scheme. � 2008 IEEE.

We show that the N-photon generalized binomial states of electromagnetic field may be put in a bijective mapping with the coherent atomic states of N two-level atoms. We exploit this correspondence to simply obtain both known and new properties of the N-photon generalized binomial states. In particular, an over-complete basis of these binomial states and an orthonormal basis are obtained. Finally, the squeezing properties of generalized binomial state are analyzed.

The shape space of k labelled points on a plane can be identified with the space of pure quantum states of dimension k-2. Hence, the machinery of quantum mechanics can be applied to the statistical analysis of planar configurations of points. Various correspondences between point configurations and quantum states, such as linear superposition as well as unitary and stochastic evolution of shapes, are illustrated. In this paper we extend our previous results on a contact of two one-dimensional sublattices with an arbitrary form of periodical potentials. The final form of the equation of contact states is given by the M-matrix coefficients of such potentials. In the case of the delta function potential and of the square barrier, the numerical examples of contact states are presented.

We investigate quantum states that possess both maximum entanglement and maximum discord between the pertinent parties. Since entanglement (discord) is defined only for bipartite (two-qubit) systems, we use an appropriate sum over all bipartitions as the associated measure. The ensuing definition—not new for entanglement—is thus extended here to quantum discord. Also, additional dimensions within the parties are considered (qudits). We also discuss quantum correlations that induce Mermin's Bell-inequality violation for all multiqubit systems. International audience; We introduce a new family of probability distributions on the set of pure states of a finite dimensional quantum system. Without any a priori assumptions, the most natural measure on the set of pure state is the uniform (or Haar) measure. Our family of measures is indexed by a time parameter $t$ and interpolates between a deterministic measure ($t=0$) and the uniform measure ($t=\infty$). The measures are constructed using a Brownian motion on the unitary group $\mathcal U_N$. Remarkably, these measures have a $\mathcal U_{N-1}$ invariance, whereas the usual uniform measure has a $\mathcal U_N$ invariance. We compute several averages with respect to these measures using as a tool the Laplace transform of the coordinates.

The set of quantum states consists of density matrices of order $N$, which are hermitian, positive and normalized by the trace condition. We analyze the structure of this set in the framework of the Euclidean geometry naturally arising in the space of hermitian matrices. For N=2 this set is the Bloch ball, embedded in $\mathbb R^3$. For $N \geq 3$ this set of dimensionality $N^2-1$ has a much richer structure. We study its properties and at first advocate an apophatic approach, which concentrates on characteristics not possessed by this set. We also apply more constructive techniques and analyze two dimensional cross-sections and projections of the set of quantum states. They are dual to each other. We propose a general formulation of the renormalisation group as a family of quantum channels which connect the microscopic physical world to the observable world at some scale. By endowing the set of quantum states with an operationally motivated information geometry, we induce the space of Hamiltonians with a corresponding metric geometry. The resulting structure allows one to quantify information loss along RG flows in terms of the distinguishability of thermal states. In particular, we introduce a family of functions, expressible in terms of two-point correlation functions, which are non increasing along the flow. The Fisher information $F$ gives a limit to the ultimate precision achievable in a phase estimation protocol. It has been shown recently that the Fisher information for a linear two-mode interferometer cannot exceed the number of particles if the input state is separable. As a direct consequence, with such input states the shot-noise limit is the ultimate limit of precision. In this work, we go a step further by deducing bounds on $F$ for several multiparticle entanglement classes. These bounds imply that genuine multiparticle entanglement is needed for reaching the highest sensitivities in quantum interferometry. We further compute similar bounds on the average Fisher information $\bar F$ for collective spin operators, where the average is performed over all possible spin directions. We show that these criteria detect different sets of states and illustrate their strengths by considering several examples, also using experimental data. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2008-11-19 We propose an alternative fidelity measure (namely, a measure of the degree of similarity) between quantum states and benchmark it against a number of properties of the standard Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity. This measure is a simple function of the linear entropy and the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product between the given states and is thus, in comparison, not as computationally demanding. It also features several remarkable properties such as being jointly concave and satisfying all of Jozsa's axioms. The trade-off, however, is that it is supermultiplicative and does not behave monotonically under quantum operations. In addition, metrics for the space of density matrices are identified and the joint concavity of the Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity for qubit states is established. © 2008 The American Physical Society. The rapid experimental progress in the field of superconducting nanocircuits gives rise to an increasing quest for advanced quantum-control techniques for these macroscopically coherent systems. Here we demonstrate theoretically that stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), a well-established method in quantum optics, should be possible with the quantronium setup of a Cooper-pair box. We find the parameters which optimize the procedure and show how the scheme appears to be robust against decoherence and should be realizable even with the existing technology.

Entanglement represents a pure quantum effect involving two or more particles. Spin systems are good candidates for studying this effect and its relation with other collective phenomena ruled by quantum mechanics. While the presence of entangled states can be easily verified, the quantitative estimate of this property is still under investigation. One of the most useful tool in this framework is the concurrence whose definition, albeit limited to $S=1/2$ systems, can be related to the correlators. We consider quantum spin systems defined along chains and square lattices, and described by Heisenberg-like Hamiltonians: our goal is to clarify the relation between entanglement and quantum phase transitions, as well as that between the concurrence the and the specific quantum state of the system., 10 pages, 2 figures. We study the dynamics of quantum correlations in a class of exactly solvable Ising-type models. We analyze in particular the time evolution of initial Bell states created in a fully polarized background and on the ground state. We find that the pairwise entanglement propagates with a velocity proportional to the reduced interaction for all the four Bell states. Singlet-like states are favored during the propagation, in the sense that triplet-like states change their character during the propagation under certain circumstances. Characteristic for the anisotropic models is the instantaneous creation of pairwise entanglement from a fully polarized state; furthermore, the propagation of pairwise entanglement is suppressed in favor of a creation of different types of entanglement. The ``entanglement wave'' evolving from a Bell state on the ground state turns out to be very localized in space-time. We construct interesting entanglement distillation protocols by interpolating between the recurrence and hashing protocols. This leads to asymptotic two-way distillation protocols, resulting in an improvement of the distillation rate for all mixed Bell diagonal entangled states, even for the ones with very high fidelity. We also present a method for how entanglement-assisted distillation protocol can be converted into nonentanglement-assisted protocols with the same yield.

The dynamics of a single qubit interacting by a sequence of pairwise collisions with an environment consisting of just two more qubits is analyzed. Each collision is modeled in terms of a random unitary operator with a uniform probability distribution described by the uniform Haar measure. We show that the purity of the system qubit as well as the bipartite and the tripartite entanglement reach time averaged equilibrium values characterized by large instantaneous fluctuations.These equilibrium values are independent of the order of collision among the qubits. The relaxation to equilibrium is analyzed also in terms of an ensemble average of random collision histories. Such average allows for a quantitative evaluation and interpretation of the decay constants. Furthermore a dependence of the transient dynamics on the initial degree of entanglement between the environment qubits is shown to exist. The implementation of a three-level Lambda System in artificial atoms would allow to perform advanced control tasks typical of quantum optics in the solid state realm, with photons in the $\mathrm{\mu m}$/mm range. However hardware constraints put an obstacle since protection from decoherence is often conflicting with efficient coupling to external fields. We address the problem of performing conventional STImulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) in the presence of low-frequency noise. We propose two strategies to defeat decoherence, based on "optimal symmetry breaking" and dynamical decoupling. We suggest how to apply to the different implementations of superconducting artificial atoms, stressing the key role of non-Markovianity., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Integrated photonics is increasing in importance for compact, robust, and scalable enabling quantum technologies. This is particularly interesting for developing quantum communication networks, where resources need to be deployed in the field. We exploit photonic chip-based Si3N4 microring resonators to realise a photon pair source with low-loss, high-noise suppression and coincidence rates of 80 x 10(3) s(-1). A simple photonic noise characterisation technique is presented that distinguishes linear and nonlinear contributions useful for system design and optimisation. We then demonstrate an all-fiber 750MHz clock-rate sequential Time-Bin entanglement scheme with raw interference visibilities >98 %. We demonstrate an integrated source of frequency-entangled photon pairs on a silicon photonics chip. The emitter has a coincidence-to-accidental ratio exceeding 103. We prove entanglement by showing two-photon frequency interference with a visibility of 94.6% ± 1.1%. This result opens the possibility of on-chip integration of frequency-bin sources with modulators and the other active and passive devices available in the silicon photonics platform.
