7 Pág. Departamento de Reproducción Animal, In both captive wildlife and production animals is important to develop strategies for population control. Immunization against GnRH is an easy and inexpensive immunocastration method that reduces the concentration of testosterone and decreases sperm quality. However, its effectiveness depends on the species and repetition of the treatment. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a single treatment (initial immunization plus a booster with Improvac) vs repeated treatment (six doses of Improvac) to inhibit testicular function and maintain the contraceptive status during long periods in bucks. Three Dwarf bucks (Capra hircus) received two doses of Improvac, the first on Week 0, and the booster 4 weeks later (single immunization, group SI) while three Dwarf bucks received one dose of Improvac every 6 months during 3 consecutive years (repeated immunization, group RI). The other three Dwarf bucks remained untreated (control bucks, group CON). Bucks from RI had a greater decrease in scrotal circumference, testosterone concentration, male odor intensity, and sperm quality than SI bucks. However, there were no differences between SI and CON bucks in any of the variables studied. Overall, repeated treatment of Improvac decreased the testicular function of Dwarf bucks, although did not produce complete infertility. However, the repetition of the treatment produced more intensive negative effects, indicating that the strength of the effects of Improvac is rapidly lost in bucks., This study was funded by the Fundación Parques Reunidos—INIA agreement CC19‐096. - Abstract

- Abstract
Floodwater mosquitoes lay their eggs on dry ground where water will eventuallyflood the area. By flooding the area and submerging the eggs of floodwater mosquitoes, the development of larvae begins. For a gravid female mosquito, the mostimportant thing is choosing the place where to lay eggs. As part of this research, which was conducted in April and May 2022, soil and leaf samples were taken on anarea of 50 x 50 cm from different altitudes in the area of Dunavac near Ilok (Danube)and Halaševo near Osijek (Drava) in order to determine at which altitude, the largestnumber of eggs are laid. Collected soil was submerged in the laboratory for the purpose of further mosquito development. Part of the larvae was preserved in alcohol, and part of larvae was left to develop into adults, after which species determinationwas carried out. A large difference was found in the potential of breeding sites in thefloodplain of the Drava and Danube, and the number of collected eggs ranged from0 to 66 per sample. The number of individuals sampled in the Danube area was 53,and in the Drava area 133. The individuals sampled in the researched areas weredetermined as Aedes vexans and Aedes sticticus. A large difference in oviposition wasfound in the floodplain of the Danube, while in the floodplain of the Drava, this levelis significantly higher.

General Medicine - Abstract

Cultural Studies ,Communication - Abstract

General Medicine - Abstract
Purpose This work aims to describe patients hospitalized in internal medicine wards in terms of nutrition and sarcopenia. It also seeks to evaluate short- and long-term mortality related to malnutrition and sarcopenia. Methods This cross-sectional study collected data on consecutive patients admitted to a single center’s internal medicine ward. Patients were recruited in May and October 2021. Malnutrition was determined by the Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) and sarcopenia by the Strength, Assistance in walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, and Falls questionnaire (SARC-F scale) and handgrip strength test. Patients who were hospitalized for >48 hours were excluded. Results The sample included 619 patients with a mean ± SD age of 76.0 ± 14.8 years of which 50.6% were women. Patients were classified into three groups based on malnutrition: group 1 (MNA-SF 12–14 points) (no risk) included 158 patients, group 2 (MNA-SF 8–12 points) (high risk) included 233 patients, and group 3 (MNA-SF 0–7 points) (malnourished) included 228 patients. Malnourished patients had more dysphagia, significantly lower protein and albumin levels, and significantly higher inflammatory marker levels and pressure ulcers. In-hospital mortality was significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 (p Conclusion Malnutrition upon admission is associated with worse short- and long-term outcomes in internal medicine inpatients. Sarcopenia, multimorbidity, and inflammation—measured by albumin, C-reactive protein, or their ratios—are key risk factors. Early identification of malnutrition and sarcopenia through active screening is important in caring for internal medicine patients.

Epidemiologic surveillance of hepatitis E virus in over 300 free-ranging and captive cetaceans in waters off Spain revealed extensive exposure to this pathogen. We suggest the persistent and widespread presence of hepatitis E in the marine environment off the coast of Spain may be driven by terrestrial sources of contamination.

Neuropsychological tests have commonly been used to determine the organization of cognitive functions by identifying latent variables. In contrast, an approach which has seldom been employed is network analysis. We characterize the network structure of a set of representative neuropsychological test scores in cognitively healthy older adults and MCI and dementia patients using network analysis. We employed the neuropsychological battery from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center which included healthy controls (n = 7623), mild cognitive impairment patients (n = 5981) and dementia patients (n = 2040), defined according to the Clinical Dementia Rating. The results showed that, according to several network analysis measures, the most central cognitive function is executive function followed by attention, language, and memory. At the test level, the most central test was the Trail Making Test B, which measures cognitive flexibility. Importantly, these results and most other network measures, such as the community organization and graph representation, were similar across the three diagnostic groups. Therefore, network analysis can help to establish a ranking of cognitive functions and tests based on network centrality and suggests that this organization is preserved in dementia. Central nodes might be particularly relevant both from a theoretical and clinical point of view, as they are more associated with other nodes, and their disruption is likely to have a larger effect on the overall network than peripheral nodes. The present analysis may provide a proof of principle for the application of network analysis to cognitive data.

General Medicine - Abstract
This paper highlights the relevance of the structural design of Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg, 1998) in conveying its message, in line with S. M. Eisenstein's theoretical principles. An analysis of its scenes has been carried out, identifying their emulation of, or "collisions" with, preceding "schemas". The film presents events characteristic of the classical model of the World War II combat subgenre, but its articulation is unforeseen and evidences authorial action as in the critical model of Vietnam, specifically as in Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979). This contrast integrates citizens of different ideological persuasions. It also borrows the structural model and deceptive ending to a initial enigma from Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) so as to allude to the same theme: the true essence of man, in this case of the veteran, represented by the elderly Ryan.

General Earth and Planetary Sciences - Abstract
Variable trace metal concentrations in the Precambrian ocean were closely linked to oxygen availability, although less is known about the drivers of seawater trace metal chemistry after the spread of complex life into the Phanerozoic eon. A major phytoplankton succession took place at the transition from the Palaeozoic to the Mesozoic era (~250 Myr ago), from an ocean dominated by the green Archaeplastida to secondary endosymbiotic algae with red-algal-derived plastids. Here, our comparative genomic analysis of 26 complete proteomes and metal domain analysis of additional 608 partially complete sequences of phytoplankton reveal that groups with different evolutionary history have distinct metal-binding proteins and contrasting metal acquisition strategies, adapted to differing availability of trace metals. The secondary-endosymbiont-bearing lineages are better adapted to well-oxygenated, nutrient-poor environments. This is supported by an enhanced thiol-based binding affinity of their transporters, coupled with minimized proteomic requirement for trace elements such as iron, copper and zinc at both protein and domain levels. Such different metal requirements across these lineages suggest a drastic decline in open-ocean trace metal concentrations at the inception of the Mesozoic, contributing to the shifts in phytoplankton communities that drove major changes in ocean chemical buffering.

Incompetence of the volar plate of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint can cause instability in the sagittal plane, repetitive dorsal dislocations, pain, and functional disability. The authors herein present five cases of repeated dorsal dislocations of the PIP joint secondary to rupture and incompetence of the volar plate. The patients were aged between 17 and 45 years, and the time elapsed from injury to intervention ranged from 16 weeks to 14 years. Volar plate repair was possible in all cases, resulting in joint stabilization. The mean postoperative follow-up period was of 18 months. Of the five cases, the outcomes were excellent in three, good in one, and fair in one, according to the Catalano et al.2 criteria. Direct volar plate repair is a reliable technique to treat volar plate incompetence resulting in repeated dorsal dislocation of the PIP joint, regardless of the time from injury to intervention.

- Abstract
The determination of protein structure has been facilitated using deep learning models, which can predict protein folding from protein sequences. In some cases, the predicted structure can be compared to the already-known distribution if there is information from classic methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, or electron microscopy (EM). However, challenges arise when the proteins are not abundant, their structure is heterogeneous, and protein sample preparation is difficult. To determine the level of confidence that supports the prediction, different metrics are provided. These values are important in two ways: they offer information about the strength of the result and can supply an overall picture of the structure when different models are combined. This work provides an overview of the different deep-learning methods used to predict protein folding and the metrics that support their outputs. The confidence of the model is evaluated in detail using two proteins that contain four domains of unknown function.

Dermatology - Abstract
Granulomatous reactions to tattoo ink have been frequently associated with exogenous pigment, although sometimes they are the manifestation of a cutaneous or an underlying systemic sarcoidosis. We report a case of a granulomatous reaction to a black tattoo pigment treated with 3% topical allopurinol for three months. We observed complete resolution without any side effects. Complementary examinations and follow-up ruled out sarcoidosis. Oral allopurinol has been proven to be effective for the management of granulomatous reactions to tattoos. Based on the significant improvement we have described in our patient, we recommend new studies to reveal all the potential benefits of the topical use of allopurinol for the treatment of granulomatous reactions to tattoo ink.

Cancer Research ,Oncology - Abstract
T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy with poor prognosis. The MYB oncogene encodes a master transcription factor that is activated in the majority of human T-ALLs. In the present study, we have performed a large-scale screening with small-molecule drugs to find clinically useful inhibitors of MYB gene expression in T-ALL. We identified several pharmacological agents that potentially could be used to treat MYB-driven malignancies. In particular, treatment with the synthetic oleanane triterpenoids (OTs) bardoxolone methyl and omaveloxolone decreased MYB gene activity and expression of MYB downstream target genes in T-ALL cells with constitutive MYB gene activation. Notably, treatment with bardoxolone methyl and omaveloxolone led to a dose-dependent reduction in cell viability and induction of apoptosis at low nanomolar concentrations. In contrast, normal bone marrow-derived cells were unaffected at these concentrations. Bardoxolone methyl and omaveloxolone treatment downregulated the expression of DNA repair genes and sensitized T-ALL cells to doxorubicin, a drug that is part of the standard therapy of T-ALL. OT treatment may thus potentiate DNA-damaging chemotherapy through attenuation of DNA repair. Taken together, our results indicate that synthetic OTs may be useful in the treatment of T-ALL and potentially also in other MYB-driven malignancies.

- Abstract
Entrepreneurship is one of the main drivers of social development, innovation, global competitiveness, and the economy growth. Because of that, local governments around the world, carry out initiatives focused on the promotion of entrepreneurship in order to support an economic growth and social development. This paper has two objectives. In the first place, the authors analyse the degree and type of information that local governments of the Alentejo region offer to entrepreneurs through their web pages, and calculate the index of information disclosure. Then the authors analyse the evolution of this index between 2015 and 2019. The results show a generalized increase in the information offered using the content analysis technique.

- Abstract
It has long been suggested that environmental exposures (i.e., the exposome) play a dominant role in shaping trajectories of human aging and premature mortality. Here we aimed to quantify the contribution of the exposome and genome to aging and mortality. We conducted an exposome-wide analysis in the UK Biobank (n=492,567) to systematically identify exposures associated with mortality while accounting for exposure correlation and mismeasurement. We found that the exposome is a major mortality determinant irrespective of genetic disease risk via shaping distinct biological and multimorbidity patterns. We identified 41 independent exposures associated with mortality, and demonstrate that most identified exposures are associated with a common signature of age-related multimorbidity, aging biomarkers, and major cardiometabolic risk factors. Compared with age and sex, polygenic risk for 22 major diseases and aging phenotypes explained an additional 2% of mortality variation, whereas the exposome explained an additional 19%. While genetics explained the majority of variation in dementias and breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers, the exposome explained the majority of variation for diseases of the lung, heart, and liver. Our findings provide a comprehensive map of the contributions of environment and genetics to mortality and common age-related diseases.

- Abstract
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a phase that can precede Alzheimer's Disease (AD). To better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying conversion from MCI to AD, we proposed a multiomics machine learning pipeline (four algorithms) to identify key pathways. Data consisted of metabolites (n=540) and proteins (n=3630) measured in blood plasma coupled with standard clinical tests (n=26). The cohort comprised 230 controls, 386 MCI participants and 184 AD-type dementia participants. Multiclass models showed that oleamide, MMSE and the priority language Z-score were the most relevant variables. Oleamide was increased in the MCI group and further increased in converters (both P

- Abstract
We performed a genome-wide association study of 143,067 highly polymorphic short tandem repeats (STRs) with MRI brain grey matter volumes (GMVs) on 10,702 UK Biobank (UKB) participants, including 8,751 in the discovery stage and 1,701 in the replication analysis. STRs’ repeat lengths were estimated from the UKB whole-genome sequencing data using Expansion Hunter software.A total of 262 STRs reached genome-wide significance in the analyses of the autosomal and sex chromosomes’ (P= 6.9 × 10−8) in association with MRI -GMVs. Replication in a second batch extraction in the UKB and linkage disequilibrium (LD) analyses confirmed 12 associations of five STRs with hippocampal, intra-calcarine cortex, and cerebellum volumes with no evidence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in LD detected in the surrounding DNA regions. Our study highlights the importance of STR variants involved in the genetic architecture of grey matter volumes.

Visual Arts and Performing Arts - Abstract

- Author

Pedro T. Nevado-Batalla Moreno
- Abstract

- Abstract

Part of the book series: Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems (LNNS, volume 595) Conference series link(s): BLOCKCHAIN: International Congress on Blockchain and Applications XX, 462 páginas. 32 b/w illustrations, 100 illustrations in colour, This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Congress on Blockchain and Applications 2022, BLOCKCHAIN’22, held in L’Aquila, Italy, in July 2022. Among the scientific community, blockchain and artificial intelligence are a promising combination that will transform the production and manufacturing industry, media, finance, insurance, e-government, etc. Nevertheless, there is no consensus with schemes or best practices that would specify how blockchain and artificial intelligence should be used together. The 37 full papers presented in the main track were carefully reviewed and selected from more than 75 submissions. They contain the latest advances on blockchain and artificial intelligence and on their application domains, exploring innovative ideas, guidelines, theories, models, technologies, and tools and identifying critical issues and challenges that researchers and practitioners must deal with in the future research. The book also includes 3 papers from the WEB3-TRUST workshop and 2 papers from the Doctoral Consortium.

Biomarkers to aid diagnosis and delineate the progression of Parkinson’s disease are vital for targeting treatment in the early phases of the disease. Here, we aim to discover a multi-protein panel representative of Parkinson’s and make mechanistic inferences from protein expression profiles within the broader objective of finding novel biomarkers. We used aptamer-based technology (SomaLogic®) to measure proteins in 1599 serum samples, 85 cerebrospinal fluid samples and 37 brain tissue samples collected from two observational longitudinal cohorts (the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre and Tracking Parkinson’s) and the Parkinson’s Disease Brain Bank, respectively. Random forest machine learning was performed to discover new proteins related to disease status and generate multi-protein expression signatures with potential novel biomarkers. Differential regulation analysis and pathway analysis were performed to identify functional and mechanistic disease associations. The most consistent diagnostic classifier signature was tested across modalities [cerebrospinal fluid (area under curve) = 0.74, P = 0.0009; brain area under curve = 0.75, P = 0.006; serum area under curve = 0.66, P = 0.0002]. Focusing on serum samples and using only those with severe disease compared with controls increased the area under curve to 0.72 (P = 1.0 × 10−4). In the validation data set, we showed that the same classifiers were significantly related to disease status (P < 0.001). Differential expression analysis and weighted gene correlation network analysis highlighted key proteins and pathways with known relationships to Parkinson’s. Proteins from the complement and coagulation cascades suggest a disease relationship to immune response. The combined analytical approaches in a relatively large number of samples, across tissue types, with replication and validation, provide mechanistic insights into the disease as well as nominate a protein signature classifier that deserves further biomarker evaluation.

General Economics, Econometrics and Finance - Abstract

Objectives:Our purpose was to determine the intensive care units’ (ICU’s) medical staff surge capacity during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Spring 2020 in Spain. Methods:A multicenter retrospective survey was performed addressing the medical specialties present in the ICUs and the increase in bed capacity during this period.Results:Sixty-seven centers (62.04%) answered the questionnaire. The ICU bed capacity during the pandemic outbreak increased by 160% (95% confidence interval [CI], 128.97-191.03%). The average number of beds per intensive care medicine (ICM) specialist was 1.5 ± 0.60 and 3.71 ± 2.44 beds/specialist before and during the COVID-19 outbreak, respectively. Non-ICM specialists and residents were present in 50 (74.63%) and 23 (34.3%) ICUs during the outbreak, respectively. The number of physicians (ICM and non-ICM residents and specialists) in the ICU increased by 89.40% (95% CI, 64.26114.53%). The increase in ICM specialists was, however, 4.94% (95% CI, −1.35-11.23%). Most non-ICM physicians were anesthetists, followed by pediatricians and cardiologists. Conclusions:The majority of ICUs in our study were able to rapidly expand critical care capacity by adapting areas outside of the normal ICU to manage critically ill patients, and by extending the critical care staff with noncritical care physicians working as force multipliers.
