Summary There is a propensity for an extreme value analysis to be conducted as a consequence of a large flooding event. This timing of the analysis introduces bias and poor coverage probabilities into the associated risk assessments and leads subsequently to inefficient flood protection schemes. We explore these problems through studying stochastic stopping criteria and propose new likelihood-based inferences that mitigate against these difficulties. Our methods are illustrated through the analysis of the river Lune, following its experiencing the UK's largest ever measured flow event in 2015. We show that without accounting for this stopping feature there would be substantial overdesign in response to the event.

Mission to the Moon: Cinematic portrayals of the giant leap of mankindThe article analyzes the portrayals of the trip to the Moon in the following motion pictures: Le Voyage dans la Lune dir. Georges Méliès, 1902, Apollo 13 dir. Ron Howard, 1995, Opération Lune dir. William Karell, 2002 and First Man dir. Damien Chazelle, 2018. The author addresses the changes in the symbolic dimension of the cinematic portrayals of Moon conquest as well as the visual representation of those changes. The principal focus of the article is on the special place of the Moon conquest within American mythology and recent attempts at both restitution and demy­thologization of this particular myth.

The sharp upper and lower bounds on the Hermitian-Toeplitz determinant of third order are computed for the classes of strongly starlike functions, lemniscate starlike functions and lune starlike functions. Most of the history of medieval thought was influenced by Platonism and the reworkings that the Latin and Greek Fathers made of Plato's doctrines. The worldview resulting from this thought considered that each manifestation of the sensible world, while participating in the nature of God, was the opportunity to access transcendent knowledge. Among these manifestations, animals played a prominent role. Zoological knowledge inherited from classical antiquity was given new meaning and enriched through an exegesis that transformed beasts into examples that illustrated aspects of Christian doctrine or provided models of moral conduct. The Physiologus and its derivatives, the medieval bestiaries are an example of this interpretive practice, which for these texts was based primarily on allegory. In this article, we propose to see how and with what objectives it was applied to animals and we will inquire about the evolution of animal symbolism in the framework of the decline of Platonism and the rise of Aristotelianism in the last centuries of the Middle Ages. For this, we will analyze a brief corpus, composed of the beaver, the weasel, the oyster and the pearl, and the elephant. Dos son los niveles de análisis que se pretenden abordar en este artículo. El primero viene referido al lenguaje empleado en la propia construcción fílmica de Le voyage dans la Lune (Viaje a la Luna, 1902) de Georges Méliès y que, como se analizará, no corresponde al propiamente cinematográfico, ya que no existe en ese momento una poética cinematográfica al uso, sino que es producto de diversos “préstamos” lingüístico-culturales —diacrónicos o sincrónicos— a su propia construcción como imagen. El segundo nivel de análisis es el correspondiente a las diversas concepciones ideológicas, morales, políticas y de género que, explícita o implícitamente, muestran o subyacen en la propia enunciación de las imágenes que constituyen a esta obra del denominado pre-cine.

By using admissibility condition technique, certain sufficient conditions are determined so that an analytic function p defined on the open unit disk and normalized by \(p(0) = 1\) satisfy the subordination \(p(z) \prec (1+Az)/(1+Bz)\) whenever, for certain choice of \(\psi \), the function \(\psi (p(z), zp'(z))\) is subordinate to a starlike function associated with lune. Further, we obtain certain sufficient conditions for a normalized analytic function f to be in the class of Janowski starlike functions.

We perform an extensive numerical analysis of $\beta$-skeleton graphs, a particular type of proximity graphs. In a $\beta$-skeleton graph (BSG) two vertices are connected if a proximity rule, that depends of the parameter $\beta\in(0,\infty)$, is satisfied. Moreover, for $\beta>1$ there exist two different proximity rules, leading to lune-based and circle-based BSGs. First, by computing the average degree of large ensembles of BSGs we detect differences, which increase with the increase of $\beta$, between lune-based and circle-based BSGs. Then, within a random matrix theory (RMT) approach, we explore spectral and eigenvector properties of randomly weighted BSGs by the use of the nearest-neighbor energy-level spacing distribution and the entropic eigenvector localization length, respectively. Capsule: Carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the burrows of Sand Martins Riparia riparia increase with depth but have no detectable impact on fledging success.Aims: To investigate whether burrow depth and CO2 concentrations influence reproductive success in Sand Martins.Methods: We monitored two Sand Martin colonies along the River Lune, Lancashire, UK, to investigate the effect of burrow depth on reproductive success. We also measured CO2 levels in a sample of burrows to test whether burrow depth predicts CO2 concentration, and to test for a relationship between CO2 concentration and breeding success.Results: Burrow depth was significantly correlated with fledging success, but the correlation was positive in first broods and negative in second broods. The highest CO2 concentration recorded was 73 650 ppm and the mean concentration across burrows was 31 757 ppm. The lunar zodiac, generally known as the manāzil al-qamar in Arabic, served both as an astronomical and an astrological system. This was a system of 28 lunar “mansions” or “stations” in which the moon was said to station ( nazala ) each night of the sidereal month. For each of the asterisms of the mansions there were prognostications, astrological and mystical connections. One of the more widely traveled sources on this astrological content in the past three centuries has been based on the work of the 7th/13th century Aḥmad b. ʿAlī l-Būnī (d. ca 622/1225 or 630/1232-1233), especially the text known as Sams al-maʿārif. This article provides a translation and edition of the relevant section on the lunar mansions with a critical commentary. It is based primarily on a 11th/17th century manuscript preserved in Istanbul’s Suleymaniye library and attributed to al-Būnī.Le zodiaque lunaire, generalement connu sous le nom manāzil al-qamar en arabe, servit a la fois comme un systeme astronomique et astrologique. Kepler’s Somnium (1634), Kircher’s Iter exstaticum (1656), and Cyrano’s Voyage dans la Lune (1657) use elements of dream and fiction as literary strategies for imparting new cosmological knowledge. This essay argues that it is above all the heuristic potential inherent in metaphorical and analogical operations that fuels the recourse to fiction in Kepler, Cyrano, and Kircher. By utilizing fiction and metaphor as a heuristic faculty of the human imagination, Kepler’s Somnium establishes the epistemological counterpart to the Copernican revolution.

Two months ago, the genitals swelled up, became very sensitive, urination became painful and profuse purulent discharge appeared. Under the influence of treatment directed against gonorrhea, all these phenomena have partly improved, partly and have completely disappeared; but new symptoms appeared: severe pain in the lower abdomen, swelling, vomiting, temperature 100 , lack of appetite and weakness.

This paper compares Reynaldo Hahn’s and Gabriel Faure’s musical settings of Paul Verlaine’s poem, “La lune blanche luit dans les bois.” Composing at the end of the 19th century, Hahn and Faure were prominent figures in French musical culture—performing in the salons of the Parisian intelligentsia—and made significant contributions to the development of French art song. Despite having shared influences, their respective approaches to Verlaine’s poem are highly individual. I begin by introducing Verlaine and the poem through the broader lens of the symbolist movement, followed by an original interpretation of the poem. Through my analysis, I provide insight into Faure’s and Hahn’s harmonic languages, with an emphasis on their use of chromatic harmony, while highlighting unique characteristics of each setting and how they convey an individualized interpretation of the poem. I conclude by inviting additional exploration of Hahn’s and Faure’s output to gain a further understanding of their musical languages, and by framing their works within the broader context of 19th century France.

On 4/5 December 2015 a slow moving frontal system associated with the extratropical cyclone Storm Desmond brought record-breaking levels of rainfall to Lancaster. Both high ground and low-lying areas were already saturated following the wettest November on record, and on the evening of 5 December the River Lune flooded into the city. Critical road and rail transport networks ground to a halt, and the city and the surrounding areas were left without mains power for 2 days after a key substation flooded, consequently leaving the majority of communication services inoperable. Was this a ‘Perfect Storm’, or a glimpse of what the future may hold for our cities as they face more frequent extreme weather events, set against the backdrop of urban population growth, and increasingly interdependent critical urban infrastructure systems?

This article is devoted to study the solvability of the Riemann–Hilbert problem, with arbitrary index, for the Cauchy–Riemann operator in a lens and two complementary lunes. We generalize the corresponding results obtained by Begehr and Vaitekhovich (Complex Var Elliptic Eqs. 2014;59:76–84). The parqueting-reflection technique is used. The boundary behaviour of related integral operators of Schwarz type and Pompeiu type is discussed. Then the expressions of the solutions are explicitly obtained.

International audience; The Chang'E-5 mission is the third phase of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program and will collect and return lunar samples. After sampling, the Orbiter and the ascent vehicle will rendezvous and dock, and both spacecraft will require high precision orbit navigation. In this paper, we present a novel tracking mode-Four-way lunar Lander-Orbiter tracking that possibly can be employed during the Chang'E-5 mission. The mathematical formulas for the Four-way lunar Lander Orbiter tracking mode are given and implemented in our newly-designed lunar spacecraft orbit determination and gravity field recovery software, the LUnar Gravity REcovery and Analysis Software/System (LUGREAS). The simulated observables permit analysis of the potential contribution Four-way lunar Lander Orbiter tracking could make to precision orbit determination for the Orbiter. Our results show that the Four-way lunar Lander Orbiter Range Rate has better geometric constraint on the orbit, and is more sensitive than the traditional two-way range rate that only tracks data between the Earth station and lunar Orbiter. After combining the Four-way lunar Lander Orbiter Range Rate data with the traditional two-way range rate data and considering the Lander position error and lunar gravity field error, the accuracy of precision orbit determination for the Orbiter in the simulation was improved significantly, with the biggest improvement being one order of magnitude, and the Lander position could be constrained to sub-meter level. This new tracking mode could provide a reference for the Chang'E-5 mission and have enormous potential for the positioning of future lunar farside Lander due to its relay characteristic. LUNE is a displayed lighting object representing time. It provides real-time lighting visualized moon phase. People can recognize the date of month through abstract image of moon. This product was developed to investigate the use of metaphor from lighting to represent time. A diverse set of researches and design initiatives related to time, temporality and slowness has emerged in the DIS and HCI communities. An important area of work is to represent time. The primary objective of this research is to suggest the new perspective of time called sense of time. First, we can understand how people perceive the time and we can also trace recent research related to perspectives of time in HCI. Second, we designed artifacts and investigated the use of moon phase as material to represent time in a new approach.

β-skeletons, prominent members of the neighborhood graph family, have interesting geometric properties and various applications ranging from geographic networks to archeology. This paper focuses on computing the β-spectrum, a labeling of the edges of the Delaunay triangulation, DT ( V ) , which makes it possible to quickly find the lune-based β-skeleton of V for any query value β ? 1 , 2 ] . We consider planar n-point sets V with L p metric, 1 < p < ∞ . We present an O ( n log 2 ? n ) time sequential, and an O ( log 4 ? n ) time parallel, β-spectrum labeling. We also show a parallel algorithm, which for a given β ? 1 , 2 ] finds the lune-based β-skeleton in O ( log 2 ? n ) time. The parallel algorithms use O ( n ) processors in the CREW-PRAM model.

Background: In recent years, technical evolution in the field of minimally invasive thoracic surgery has allowed a progressive reduction of invasiveness of major lung resection. The uniportal technique aims to decrease surgical trauma to a minimum, while ensuring a correct oncological procedure. We describe our initial approach to uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Methods: A gradual approach to uniportal VATS was provided by means of specialized courses between 2016 and 2018. Dedicated instruments for uniportal VATS lobectomy (UVL) were made available in 2017. Uniportal VATS procedures between March 2017 and Lune 2018 were evaluated. Type of procedure, conversion rate to multiportal VATS or thoracotomy, post-operative complications and hospital stay were described. Results: We performed 52 procedures (49 minor resections, 1 thymectomy for thymic hyperplasia, 2 lobectomies). Conversion to multiportal VATS was required in 15 cases (14 wedge resections, and 1 thymectomy). No major complications occurred intra- and post-operatively. Median post-operative stay was 3 days for wedge resection (range, 2–5 days) and 6 and 7 days for lobectomies. Conclusions: Uniportal VATS proved to be a safe and feasible procedure even in the preliminary phase of learning. A structured approach, entailing intensive exposure in ultra-high-volume centers, specialized courses, employment of dedicated instrumentation may help surgeons overcoming initial difficulties.

"Au Clair de la Lune on Gramophone - For Edouard-Leon Scott and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy -(1860/1923/2015)" is a work that realizes the provocative idea of Moholy-Nagy, a record without prior acoustic information (1923), with the help of mature vinyl audio recording technology and current personal fabrication tools. In this paper, I explain the body, background, and characteristics of the work.

The intersection L of two different non-opposite hemispheres G and H of the d-dimensional unit sphere $$S^d$$ is called a lune. By the thickness of L we mean the distance of the centers of the $$(d-1)$$ -dimensional hemispheres bounding L. For a hemisphere G supporting a convex body $$C \subset S^d$$ we define $$\mathrm{width}_G(C)$$ as the thickness of the narrowest lune or lunes of the form $$G \cap H$$ containing C. If $$\mathrm{width}_G(C) =w$$ for every hemisphere G supporting C, we say that C is a body of constant width w. We present properties of these bodies. In particular, we prove that the diameter of any spherical body C of constant width w on $$S^d$$ is w, and that if $$w < \frac{\pi }{2}$$ , then C is strictly convex. Moreover, we check when spherical bodies of constant width and constant diameter coincide.

The period of the industrial revolution was a challenging time for British ports as escalations in trade demanded improvements to infrastructures and access to the ports. Programmes to clear and mark access channels and provide quays with warehousing and wet docks for safe berthing were commonplace. Lancaster on the River Lune, some five miles from the sea, was one of the many ports that sought to make these improvements under the direction of a Port Commission which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1749. The article reports on the improvements that were introduced to navigation on the river using the surviving records of the Port Commission as the principal source with a special focus on the introduction of powered dredging in the mid nineteenth century. The scope includes a review of the early development work on steam powered dredges, the circumstances that led to the purchase and use of a machine on the Lune and the work undertaken to improve the navigation.

After surveying the sporadic production of French-language sf films in Quebec since 1970, this essay examines three significant projects. Dans une galaxie pres de chez vous (Desrosiers Canada 2004) successfully couples regional humour with parody, targeting internationally known sf television franchises such as Star Trek . Two ‘straight’ films stewarded by auteur director Robert Lepage directly address the central tropes of sf: La Face cachee de la lune (Lepage Canada 2003) and Mars et Avril (Villeneuve Canada 2012). The analysis describes how these films continue to express a local, ‘Quebecois’ sense of cultural identity while reaching out to a more universal audience.

In 1865, the French science fiction writer Jules Verne produced a new publication in his ‘voyages extraordinaires’ series of adventure tales.1 This one was called De la terre a la lune (From the Earth to the Moon) and featured a gun 900 ft long that shot a capsule containing three intrepid travellers on their journey.2 Five years later, he produced a sequel Autour de la lune (Trip Around the Moon) giving their adventures once they had reached their target. Needless to say, despite the aura of scientific calculation, the gun required would have needed to be impossibly large. It wasn’t practicable.

A 15.2-ha Roman marching camp has been identified at the northern end of the Lune gorge where the Roman road northwards from Ribchester emerges into the Eden valley and the Cumbrian plain. The road runs here on an alignment that has not been determined before. The camp lies astride the road and faced east. The remains of the camp and the road are described and discussed.

Ramanujan is the second mathematician who has squared a circle upto a few decimals of  equal to 3.1415926… The squaring of curvature entities implies that lune, circle are finite entities having a finite magnitude to be represented by a finite number.

A @b-skeleton is a proximity graphs with node neighbourhood defined by continuous-valued parameter @b. Two nodes in a @b-skeleton are connected by an edge if their lune-based neighbourhood contains no other nodes. With increase of @b some edges a skeleton are disappear. We study how a number of edges in @b-skeleton depends on @b. We speculate how this dependence can be used to discriminate between random and non-random planar sets. We also analyse stability of @b-skeletons and their sensitivity to perturbations.

The Lune aqueduct carries the Lancaster Canal across the River Lune north of Lancaster, UK. It is a magnificent, monumental, five-span, masonry structure constructed between 1793 and 1796 under the direction of John Rennie. The Lancaster Canal between Tewitfield and Preston was opened to navigation on 22 November 1797. The aqueduct is now a grade I listed structure and forms part of the estate of the Canal & River Trust. Over the past few years leakage from the canal trough and approach channels had increased and become very serious. This paper describes recent work undertaken to seal the trough and channels and hence preserve the integrity of the structure into the future.

The astronomical work of John of Murs (fl. 1320-40), a scholar born in Normandy and active in Paris in the first half of the fourteenth century, has received extensive attention in recent years, both as an early transmitter of the Alfonsine Tables elaborated in Toledo in the late thirteenth century and as one of the compilers of tables based on them, known as the Parisian Alfonsine Tables, that were widely diffused throughout Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century.1 Among John of Murs's astronomical works are the following:(1) The Expositio intentionis regis Alfonsii circa tabulas eius, a text with no tables, probably composed in 1321, where he praises the Alfonsine Tables and states explicitly his dependence on them.2(2) The Tables of 1321, his first and most extensive set of tables, with a text beginning Si vera loca planetarum per presentes tabulas volueris invenire. . . . The tables are devoted to the five planets as well as the Sun and the Moon, but nothing related to the daily rotation and trigonometry is addressed.3(3) The Patefit, a work composed of tables for the determination of conjunctions and oppositions, including lists of mean and true syzygies beginning in 1321, and associated with a canon beginning Patefit ex Ptolomei disciplines in libro suo. . . . The tables have only been partially analysed.4(4) The Tabulae permanentes, in collaboration with Firmin of Beauval. This is a short text consisting of only one table, a double argument table using signs of 30°, for finding the time interval from mean to true syzygy and a canon explaining its use, beginning Omnius utruisque sexus armonium cele stem....5We have now found another short work by John of Murs in Brussels, Bibliotheque royale, MS 1086-1 1 15, of which, as far as we know, this is the only extant copy.6 It consists of a calendar giving the daily positions of the Sun for 1321 (ff. 24r-25v), a brief canon dealing with a set of tables (f. 26r-v) and the tables themselves, complementing the information given in the calendar (ff. 27r-31r). The first lines of the canon are an enthusiastic comment on the Alfonsine Tables:Notum sit omnibus astronomis presentibus etfuturis quod ex vertiate tabularum alfoncii principis illustris regis castelle que sunt inter ceteras de planetarum motibus veriores, cum per eclipses et coniuncciones sensibiles experiencia probet eas. (f. 26r: 1-3)Let it be known to all present and future astronomers that as far as truth is concerned the tables by the illustrious prince Alfonso, King of Castile, are the most precise among those that address planetary motions, when checked against experience by means of visible eclipses and conjunctions.This text mentions 1321 several times as the epoch of the calendar and it is unequivocally dated 1321 for, at the end of the canons (f. 26v: 13-14), we are told: Finit canon datus anno Domini Ihesu Christi 1321 (Here ends the canon written in the year 1321 of our Lord Jesus Christ).7 It is generally true that calendars for a given year are produced shortly before that year for, in most cases, the information in them would have to be modified to apply to any subsequent year. Thus, this text probably predates all those listed above, with the possible exception of the Expositio, which may have been written at about the same time. It is noteworthy that John of Murs underlines the precision of the Castilian Alfonsine Tables "when checked against experience", a task that certainly takes time. As noted above, in the Expositio John of Murs also indicates his dependence on the astronomical tables associated with Alfonso X of Castile (d. 1284). John of Murs then adds:Ob reverenciam etiam et honorent viri venerabais et solennis in lege fidelium de ordine beati Francisa cuius nomen scribitur in hac arte, normannie partibus oriundi, ego Iohannes sibi compatriota commorans in domo pauperum scholarium de Sorbona hoc opusculum satis breve kalendarium solis et lune nuncupatum extrahere laboravi, per quod sciuntur faciliter conclusiones que sunt in hoc opere, (f. …

Dean Roden Chapman (1922-1995), an engineer and scientist at NASA Ames Research Center, was one of the founders of astronautics (rocket science). He used his laboratory to produce objects that are very similar to Australian tektites. There were two major questions about tektites in his day: did they come for the Earth or the Moon? And were they caused by meteor impacts or volcanic eruptions? Chapman came to believe that tektites were caused by meteor impacts on the Moon. He made many contributions to our understanding of tektites and was also one of the people who helped NASA get to the Moon. One percent of the Moon was covered with little glass spheres, but they are quite different from the tektites known on the Earth. The data from the Moon rocks was largely incompatible with the theory that terrestrial tektites are derived from the Moon. Chapman stopped publishing papers about tektites, but he remained interested in the subject for the rest of his life and believed that in the long run the lunar impact theory might become dominant again as new data was returned from the Moon. From our present understanding of tektites and the Moon, Chapman failed because he privileged the facts that he generated himself in his laboratory. He was not prepared to study the messy complexity of natural products. He was misled by the meteorite science traditions used in tektite science. He did not use appropriate statistical procedures, and because he was such a famous scientist in his own field the editors of two major journals in which he published did not properly assist him when he was working outside his area of major competence.

Introduction: Auto-ethnographic accounts can highlight unsaid moments of professional practice. In this case, my auto-ethnographic tale ‘Le moment de la lune’ re-inscribes subjugated knowledge about menstruation and occupational therapy practice in the era before adolescent wards. Methods: This fictional tale is written in direct dialogue with an article that was published in this journal at a particular point in my own career as an occupational therapist. In the tale I am ‘writing in’ what was not written about in my article and in occupational therapy generally. This ‘writing-in’/re-inscribing is the research method. Findings: My previous article ‘Normal spaces’ published in this journal in 1985, was organised around principles and generalities of youth-specific practice. The original article had little locating the personal or evoking the body and a heavy reliance on the literature. Issues of gender and culture were largely absent, or, perhaps, ‘written out’. The corresponding tale of embodied sexuality, ‘Le moment de la lune’, articulates something of local complex practice and the particularity of individual therapeutic work to do with menstruation in self-care. Discussion: Points of tension in ‘Normal spaces’ are elaborated and I explain how ‘Le moment de la lune’ problematises supporting menarche in a children’s hospital. Now practice has moved on with dedicated adolescent wards in all major children’s hospitals. Nevertheless, occupational therapy practice around issues of menstrual self-management is still under-documented. Writing about unspoken moments of practice can have ethical implications for expanding the ways occupational therapy practice can be written and understood.

We investigated brooding patterns and timing of reproduction in three species of freshwater mussels, Elliptio complanata (Lightfoot, 1786), Elliptio roanokensis (Lea, 1839), and Elliptio angustata (Lea, 1831) in the lower Broad River near Columbia, South Carolina. Through repeatedly marking and recapturing individuals from late March through late lune 2008, we determined that E. complanata and E. roanokensis can complete at least two broods during this season, and that E. angustata can complete at least three broods with very little time between broods. The lengths of brooding periods were difficult to estimate and subject to a wide margin of error. However, the brooding period was estimated to be 20 to 36 days in most broods of E. angustata, and could be as short as 18 days in E. roanokensis and 25 days in E. complanata. Mark and recapture of gravid mussels provided a much more detailed picture of brooding strategies than the collection and preservation of different individuals throughout the year.

Both the Chang’E-1 and SELenological and ENgineering Explorer (SELENE) lunar missions, launched in 2007, provide an opportunity for significant advances in lunar science. In particular, both orbiters provide refined lunar topography models with unprecedented finer resolution and improved accuracy, especially for the far side and the polar areas of the Moon where fewer valid measurements have been available to date. An evaluation of the derived topography models is essential for the improved interpretation of selenophysics, including a knowledge of the interior of the Moon. This study provides both external and internal accuracy assessments for the derived topographic models (note that different data sets are used, albeit independent). The external comparison, which consists of comparing the topographic models with landmarks established with lunar laser ranging and radio tracking, yields an accuracy estimate of 157 m for the Change’E-1 model and 58 m for the SELENE model (150 m and 55 m if the newly recovered Lunakhod-1 site is included). The internal comparison, consisting of crossover analysis of the altimeter data after the removal of once-per-orbital-revolution errors, yields an accuracy estimate of 206 m and 68 m, respectively. These comparisons allow the establishment of conservative estimates of accuracy of 200 m and 70 m for the Chang’E-1 and SELENE models, respectively. Given the conservative estimates on the accuracy, both models yield significant improvement by factors of 2.5 and 8, respectively, when compared with a contemporary lunar topography model, i.e., the Unified Lunar Control Network 2005 (ULCN2005).

Lunar Reconnaissance The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter reached lunar orbit on 23 June 2009. Global data acquired since then now tell us about the impact history of the Moon and the igneous processes that shaped it. Using the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter, Head et al. (p. 1504 ; see the cover) provide a new catalog of large lunar craters. In the lunar highlands, large-impact craters have obliterated preexisting craters of similar size, implying that crater counts in this region cannot be used effectively to determine the age of the underlying terrain. Crater counts based on the global data set indicate that the nature of the Moon's impactor population has changed over time. Greenhagen et al. (p. 1507 ) and Glotch et al. (p. 1510 ) analyzed data from the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment, which measures emitted thermal radiation and reflected solar radiation at infrared wavelengths. The silicate mineralogy revealed suggests the existence of more complex igneous processes on the Moon than previously assumed.

Inland fisheries in England and Wales have high economic and social values. Managing participation to maximise fishery performance is key to maintaining this status. The capital value of fishing rights for migratory salmonid fisheries is €165 million. Coarse fisheries contribute €1030 million to the economy. The central tenet to increasing participation in recreational salmonid fisheries is that an increase in stock size will result in more anglers accessing the fishery. This was examined for salmon on the rivers Usk and Lune where exploitation restrictions increased the number of salmon available to anglers. On the River Lune, the number of salmon available post-intervention increased by 66%. There was no significant increase in catch while the number of anglers decreased by 16.3%. On the River Usk, the closure of the net fishery potentially resulted in an additional ∼1200 salmon being available. Following closure, there was no significant change in rod catch or in the number of anglers. Increased participation is dependent less upon stock manipulation for coarse fisheries and more upon facilitating the activity. In recent years, urban fishery development programmes have provided improved access to local fishing opportunity. Also, new anglers have been targeted through campaigns such as Get Hooked on Fishing and the Scout Angler Badge.
