In his mathematical theory, Milankovic finds a link between the heat received by the Earth surface per unit time as a function of the solar ephemerids and derives a model of climate changes at periods longer than a few thousand years and more. In this paper, we investigate the potential connections of global temperature and Earth rotation at much shorter periods, in the complementary range of one to a few hundred years. For temperature, we select the HadCrut05. For Earth rotation, defined by pole coordinates and length of day, we use the IERS data sets. Using iterative Singular Spectrum Analysis (iSSA), we extract the trend and quasi-periodic components of these time series. The first quasi-periodic components (period ~80-90 years) are expressions of the Gleissberg cycle and are identical (at the level of uncertainty of the data). Taken together, the trend and Gleissberg components allow one to reconstruct 87% of the variance of the data for lod and 48% for temperature. The next four iSSA components, with periods ~40, 22, 15 and 9 years. The Lagrange and Laplace theories imply that the derivative of pole motion should be identical to lod variations: this strong check is passed by the trend + Gleissberg reconstructions. The annual oscillations of pole motion and lod are linked to annual variations in Sun-Earth distance, in agreement with an astronomical, but not a climatic origin. The results obtained in this paper for the observed temperature/rotation couple add to the growing list of evidence of solar and planetary forcings of gravitational nature on a number of geophysical processes (including sea-level, sea-level pressure, sea-ice extent, oceanic climate indices)., 13 pages, 13 figures

In state of Rio de Janeiro, the Southeast Region of Brazil, 97.91% of the reforested areas contain exclusively species of Pinus and Eucalyptus. Due to the growing demand for raw forest materials, and low diversity of planted species, the market needs to explore new ones. Parica (Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke), Brazilian firetree (Schizolobium parahyba), Cedar (Toona ciliate), and Teak (Tectona grandis) are species with high economic value and are already found in small reforestation areas in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The goal of this study was to find the suitable environmental areas to good productivity each of these four forest species in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Suitable environmental areas were determined by classifying climate maps (water deficit, rainfall, and air temperature) and digital elevation models (DEM) of the State of Rio de Janeiro, based on the climatic and altitude demands of each species. Maps of suitable areas were generated using spatial analysis as raster map algebra and raster map reclassification. The species under study showed great potential for growth throughout the State of Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian firetree (known as Guapuruvu in Brazil) presented the largest environmentally suitable area for planting in the state (47%), especially in regions of low maximum rainfall, associated with high temperatures and low altitudes in Rio de Janeiro (e.g., Baixadas Litorâneas with 36.9% of suitable area). Parica presented the smallest environmentally suitable area (19%), with suitable areas in regions of altitude less than 700 m (e.g., Medio Paraiba and Serrana, within 27.4% and 20.8% of the suitability area, respectively.). Future studies could refine the suitable areas by examining the soil conditions of each area and researching the economic and social factors that are unique to each region.

REIPI/ESGICH/ESGBIS/INCREMENT-SOT Group., There are scarce data on the efficacy of ertapenem in the treatment of bacteremia due to extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. We evaluated the association between treatment with ertapenem or meropenem and clinical cure in KT recipients with nonsevere bacteremic urinary tract infections (B-UTI) caused by ESBL-E. We performed a registered, retrospective, international (29 centers in 14 countries) cohort study (INCREMENT-SOT, NCT02852902). The association between targeted therapy with ertapenem versus meropenem and clinical cure at day 14 (the principal outcome) was studied by logistic regression. Propensity score matching and desirability of outcome ranking (DOOR) analyses were also performed. A total of 201 patients were included; only 1 patient (treated with meropenem) in the cohort died. Clinical cure at day 14 was reached in 45/100 (45%) and 51/101 (50.5%) of patients treated with ertapenem and meropenem, respectively (adjusted OR 1.29; 95% CI 0.51 to 3.22; P = 0.76); the propensity score-matched cohort included 55 pairs (adjusted OR for clinical cure at day 14, 1.18; 95% CI 0.43 to 3.29; P = 0.74). In this cohort, the proportion of cases treated with ertapenem with better DOOR than with meropenem was 49.7% (95% CI, 40.4 to 59.1%) when hospital stay was considered. It ranged from 59 to 67% in different scenarios of a modified (weights-based) DOOR sensitivity analysis when potential ecological advantage or cost was considered in addition to outcome. Open science (OS) is of paramount importance for the improvement of science worldwide and across research fields. Recent years have witnessed a transition toward open and transparent scientific practices, but there is still a long way to go. Early career researchers (ECRs) are of crucial relevance in the process of steering toward the standardization of OS practices, as they will become the future decision makers of the institutional change that necessarily accompanies this transition. Thus, it is imperative to gain insight into where ECRs stand on OS practices. Under this premise, the Open Science group of the Max Planck PhDnet designed and conducted an online survey to assess the stance toward OS practices of doctoral candidates from the Max Planck Society. As one of the leading scientific institutions for basic research worldwide, the Max Planck Society provides a considerable population of researchers from multiple scientific fields, englobed into three sections: biomedical sciences, chemistry, physics and technology, and human and social sciences. From an approximate total population of 5,100 doctoral candidates affiliated with the Max Planck Society, the survey collected responses from 568 doctoral candidates. The survey assessed self-reported knowledge, attitudes, and implementation of different OS practices, namely, open access publications, open data, preregistrations, registered reports, and replication studies. ECRs seemed to hold a generally positive view toward these different practices and to be interested in learning more about them. Furthermore, we found that ECRs’ knowledge and positive attitudes predicted the extent to which they implemented these OS practices, although levels of implementation were rather low in the past. We observed differences and similarities between scientific sections. We discuss these differences in terms of need and feasibility to apply these OS practices in specific scientific fields, but additionally in relation to the incentive systems that shape scientific communities. Lastly, we discuss the implications that these results can have for the training and career advancement of ECRs, and ultimately, for the consolidation of OS practices.

International audience; In order to investigate intra- and inter-annual variability of North Brazil Current (NBC) rings, angular momentum eddy detection and tracking algorithm (AMEDA) was used for identification of their occurrence, trajectories, and parameters. Based on 24 years (1993–2016) of geopotential height and geostrophic current fields reanalysis data from ARMOR 3D (¼°), we identified an average rate of five NBC rings shed by year. The rings present an average lifetime of 15.3 (±5.4) weeks, average speed based radius ($R_{max}$) of 139.8 (±23.6) km, and mean sea surface height anomaly (SSHa) of 9.4 (±4.0) cm. The mean observed maximum azimuthal velocity ($V_{max}$) was 0.27 (±0.08) m/s, while the averaged Rossby number (Ro) value was 0.08 (±0.04) and averaged kinetic energy (KE) was of 255.3 (±154.8) cm2 /s2 . NBC rings have larger dimensions, rotate faster, live less, and transfer more energy in boreal winter months. In contrast, those shed during boreal summer and early fall last longer, have smaller diameters and carry less energy. Besides, the analysis of ring merging pointed that the interaction between NBC rings generated a significantly increase in ring energy (52%), and velocity (22%). Finally, we observed the vertical anomalies temperature and salinity profiles, which indicated a thermocline deepening and sinking of coastal and tropical waters due to NBC rings downwelling. This study emphasizes the robustness and efficiency of AMEDA for studying rings in the ocean and further theorizes possible impacts of NBC ring on ocean physical and biogeochemical features in the Western Tropical North Atlantic.

A utilização deste tipo de informação tem sido amplamente utilizada para auxiliar no planejamento de tomada de decisões de diversas empresas, e mais recentemente vem sendo adotada por alguns órgãos da gestão pública, devido a sua eficiência. Este trabalho tem como objetivo criar um Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG) do Campus da UFES, localizado em Alegre/ES, afim de que o mesmo sirva como ferramenta de gestão para tomada de decisões. O trabalho será iniciado com o levantamento de dados qualitativos, destacando as principais características de cada edificação construída e sua ocupação no tempo, em seguida serão utilizadas técnicas de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental a fim de respaldar as discussões sobre o tema proposto. Por fim, será elaborado um banco de dados em SIG com todas as informações relativas ao local. A área de estudo compreende o campus da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo UFES, localizado em Alegre -ES, que foi contemplado pelos planos de extensão do governo e teve sua área construída aumentada no período de 2004 a 2014. A falta de um planejamento adequado na localização dessas obras causa diversos problemas ao campus, como falta de vagas nos estacionamentos, salas de aulas em quantidade e tamanhos insuficientes, áreas verdes de pequenas proporções, dentre outros. A confecção do banco de dados espacial, produto final que se pretende alcançar com esse projeto de dissertação, permitirá minimizar futuros impactos a partir das decisões conscientes da gestão. A proposta enquadra-se na linha de pesquisa Gestão de Operações do Setor Público, na qual a orientadora deste trabalho está alocada. Security Risk Assessment is commonly performed by using traditional methods based on linear probabilistic tools and informal expert judgements. These methods lack the capability to take the inherent dynamic and intelligent nature of attackers into account. To partially address the limitations, researchers applied game theory to study security risks. However, these methods still rely on traditional methods to determine essential model parameters, such as payoff values. To overcome the limitations of traditional methods, we propose an approach which combines agent-based modelling with Monte Carlo simulations. Agent-based models allow more realistic representation of essential aspects and processes of socio-technical systems at cognitive, social and organisational levels. Such models can be used to estimate risks and parameters related to them. An application of the approach is illustrated by a case study of an airport security checkpoint.

The use of intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin is a valid option in the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder tumors, making it the main subject of a lot of publications. The aim of the present study is to review and consolidate the data available about this subject. A review of the data available was made on PubMed with the keywords: “intravesical BCG” and “non-muscle invasive bladder cancer”. Original and review articles written in English or Portuguese were selected. We present the discussion alongside the results for structural purposes. Scientific evidence strongly advises in favor of BCG use on intermediate and high risk tumors, due to its impact on the recurrence and possibly on the progression rates. It is important to be watchful for possible local and systemic side effects, that when detected call for a rightful therapeutically decision alongside the recommended schemes. The use of intravesical BCG with therapeutically purposes has strong evidence on the non-muscle invasive bladder tumors. More studies are needed in order to better understand the best administration scheme and its mechanism of action.

Atmospheric electric field (AEF) measurements were carried out in three different sites forming a triangular array in Southern Portugal. The campaign was performed during the summer characterized by Saharan dust outbreaks; the 16th-17th July 2014 desert dust event is considered here. Evidence of long-range dust electrification is attributed to the air-Earth electrical current creating a positive space-charge inside of the dust layer. An increase of ~23 V/m is observed in AEF on the day of the dust event corresponding to space-charges of ~20-2 pCm-3 (charge layer thicknesses ~10-100 m). Os navios de contêineres são usualmente contratados pela categoria de serviço liners. Os navios liners possuem uma escala fixa de atendimento, previamente divulgada, e caso o navio não seja atracado no porto dentro do intervalo acordado de tempo entre sua chegada até sua atracação, denominado janela de atracação, ocorre uma situação chamada cancelamento de escala e o navio simplesmente não atraca no porto e segue viagem para não comprometer todas as escalas nos outros portos. Portanto, no contexto analisado, é importante disponibilizar aos portos uma ferramenta que minimize o cancelamento de escala, pois tal cancelamento impactará em perdas de receita e contratos para o porto. Para o planejamento da atracação de navios no porto, a literatura cientifica sugere o Problema de Alocação de Berço (PAB). Esta dissertação tem por objetivo propor um modelo matemático baseado no Problema de Roteamento de Veículos (PRV) com Prêmio, Janela de Tempo e Múltiplos Depósitos aplicado ao planejamento da atracação em portos de navios liners com possibilidade de cancelamento de escala visando maximizar a receita obtida pelo atendimento aos navios e também reduzir o tempo de espera para o navio atracar. Instâncias de teste foram desenvolvidas tendo como base as características operacionais do Terminal de Vila Velha (TVV) e o modelo foi executado no CPLEX 12.6. Os resultados mostraram a eficiência do modelo proposto para planejamento da atracação em portos onde pode haver o cancelamento de escala, reduzindo o número de navios não atendidos e maximizando a receita do porto.

Xylanase is a commercial enzyme that has considerable applications in different types of industries, such as the feed, food, textile and paper industries, amongst others. The main goal of the present work was to select and evaluate the enzyme production from isolated wild yeasts strains obtained from several different Brazilian regions. From a total of 349 strains, two were selected, namely LEB-AAD 5 and LEB-AY 10 , which produced fairly stable enzymes. The characterization studies showed that the strain LEB-AAD 5 produced an enzyme with the following optimal range: temperature from 57.5 to 67.5 oC and pH from 4.7 to 5.5, with a half-life of 21.33 hours at 52oC and pH 5.3, Vmax of 1.77 μmol/mL.min and Km of 0.44 g/L. The enzyme from strain LEB-AY 10 showed the following optimal range: pH from 4.1 to 4.8 and temperature around 80oC, with a half-life of 11.21 hours at 72oC and pH 5.3, Vmax of 5.47 μmol/mL.min and Km of 1.37 g/L. Xylanase from LEB-AY 10 strain is more Thermo-stable than that of LEB-AAD 5 , both of which belongs to Cryptococcus sp. After optimized using two experimental designs, xylanase production increased by 600%, reaching 11.25 IU/mL under the optimal fermentation conditions (30°C, initial pH of 6.0 and 20 g/L of xylan as substrate).

The chemical composition of the essential oils from Brazilian species of the genus Aristolochia are being reported for the first time. The oils, which were obtained by steam distillation from seven Brazilian Aristolochia species: A. gigantea, A. macroura, A. cymhifera, A. rodriguesia, A. birostris, A. papillaris and A. triangularis, were analyzed by GC/MS and found to be rich in sesquiterpenes. The major components of the various oils were:—A. birostris: β-caryophyllene (13.9%), α-humulene (16.4%) and germacrene A (13.3%); A. cymhifera: n-undecane (17.7%) and dodecane (12.4%); A. gigantea: β-caryophyllene (8.8–19.3%), germacrene D (16.3–24.9%), γ-elemene (0–21.6%), trans-α-bergamotene (2.3–12.5%), (E)-nerolidol (0–23.4%), linalool (0–14.6%), nerol (0–11.5%) and geraniol (0–26.2%); A. macroura: δ-elemene (1.2–12.4%), α-copaene (2.5–13.3%), β-caryophyllene (10.6–15.3%), α-humulene (15.5–20.5%), γ-elemene (10.4–11.6%) and (E)-nerolidol (0–33.1%), farnesene (12.7%); A. papillaris: calarene (13.6%), α...

The findings in a correlated angiographic and histological study of eighty-one selected femoral heads obtained from cadavera ranging from thirteen to eighty years of age are reported. Three groups of arteries were demonstrated: upper and lower capital and ligamental arteries. Anastomoses of the upper and lower capital arteries formed the superoinferior arch in fifty-five of the eighty-one specimens; ligamental arteries were visualized in twenty-eight specimens; superoligamental arches, in twelve, and superoinferoligamental arches, in fourteen. There was no correlation between the occurrence of the arches and age or race, but there was a significant correlation between the presence of the superoinferior arch and the female sex, the arch being found in twenty-eight of thirty-three female cadavera and in only two of forty-eight male cadavera. The histological studies of the site of attachment of the ligamentum teres revealed arteries in every specimen. However, in approximately two-thirds of them, these arteries were 200 micrometers in diameter or less and did not fill with radiopaque material; in the other third the vessels ranged from 201 to 511 micrometers in diameter and did fill with the injection medium. These larger vessels anastomose with the arterial network within the femoral head and contribute to its blood supply.

What sets the Azorean banking system apart in the Portuguese context is the concentration of Caixas Económicas or Savings Banks accounting for half of these financial institutions in Portugal.These saving banks were promoted and had as shareholders mainly small and medium local traders and landlords with export businesses. These small institutions were the only bank network covering most of the islands and preceded the expansion of a national network of agencies created mostly after the Second World War. This paper examines the effects of the 1929 crisis on the Azorean banking system which was generalized, and had deep and lon lasting effects, using unpublished data from the archive of Banco de Portugal. It is a case of contagion, typical of a banking crisis, affecting the credibility and confidence of all institutions and leadind to an interruption of payments for a period of two years. Bankruptcies are limited to Caixa Bancária Raposo de Amaral and Caixa económica Socorros Mútuos but the reestructuring spreads over a ten yera period.The contraction of monetary circulation caused by the banking crisis and the monetary integration are also major factors contributing to the long and deep economic crisis tham spread from 1929 to 1945. The purpose of this paper is to describe the EHIS Method© (Entrepreneurship Human Interactions Skills), an innovative entrepreneurship teaching and learning method developed and used at the Entrepreneurship course at Portucalense University (UPT), a private higher education institution in Portugal. EHIS Method© draws on insights from the recent literature on entrepreneurship education and is applied to teach Entrepreneurship in several study programs at UPT, such as Psychology, Social Education, Tourism, Economics, Law, Management, Informatics, Management and Information Systems and Hospitality Management. The students are grouped into teams and challenged to develop an entrepreneurship project, which consists of four different steps: (1) the idea discovery/generation; (2) from the idea to the business model; (3) from the business model to the business plan; (4) from the business plan to the preparation of the application to the Net UPT (business incubator of UPT). Throughout the EHIS Method©, students have to successfully go through a variety of assessment elements, held at different times, encompassing different activities and skills and involving different types of evaluators: (a) teachers/mentors; (b) university professors and (c) potential investors.

Um surto raro de E. coli surgiu, em Maio de 2011, na Alemanha, sem que se encontrasse uma causa clara. Durante várias semanas, fontes oficiais arriscaram dar explicações prováveis que o desenrolar dos acontecimentos veio a contrariar. Ao longo desse tempo, os media foram ampliando contradições, fazendo arrastar um clima de incerteza que teve como consequência mais visível a diminuição drástica no consumo de vegetais. Este artigo estuda a mediatização que a imprensa portuguesa fez a este surto, procurando perceber os processos de construção de noticiabilidade e as fontes que foram interpeladas pelos jornalistas. Os jornais escolhidos foram o Público, o Jornal de Notícias e o Expresso, que publicaram sobre este assunto 52 artigos nos quais foram citadas 163 fontes de informação., On May 2011, Germany was involved in a rare outbreak of E. coli for which there was no clear cause. For several weeks, official sources sought to give plausible explanations that were denied by the course of events. Throughout that period of time, the media echoed these official contradictions, contributing to promote uncertainty among the population which had as most visible consequence the decrease in vegetables’ consumption. This paper studies Portuguese media coverage during this outbreak, looking for understanding news production processes and news sources behavior. International audience; The objective of the presented work is the bio-decontamination of small diameter long tubes by direct exposure of the tube inner surface to the plasma of a pulsed corona discharge in dry or humid argon. Bactericidal tests were conducted with Escherichia coli strain DH-1 for various exposure times. Up to similar to 5.5 log(10) reduction was observed for E. coli exposed 44 cm away from the HV electrode, for a 20 minute treatment. The factors contributing to the observed bactericidal effect include desiccation, reactive oxygen species (OH), H2O2 accumulation in the liquid phase, and UV B (and possibly VUV) in dry argon.
