Abstract: International audience; Crystal structures can strongly deviate from bulk states when confined into nanodomains. These deviations may deeply affect properties and reactivity and then call for a close examination. In this work, we address the case where extended crystal defects spread through a whole solid and then yield an aperiodic structure and specific reactivity. We focus on iron boride, α-FeB, whose structure has not been elucidated yet, thus hindering the understanding of its properties. We synthesize the two known phases, α-FeB and β-FeB, in molten salts at 600 and 1100 °C, respectively. The experimental X-ray diffraction (XRD) data cannot be satisfactorily accounted for by a periodic crystal structure. We then model the compound as a stochastic assembly of layers of two structure types. Refinement of the powder XRD pattern by considering the explicit scattering interference of the different layers allows quantitative evaluation of the size of these domains and of the stacking faults between them. We, therefore, demonstrate that α-FeB is an intergrowth of nanometer-thick slabs of two structure types, β-FeB and CrB-type structures, in similar proportions. We finally discuss the implications of this novel structure on the reactivity of the material and its ability to perform insertion reactions by comparing the reactivities of α-FeB and β-FeB as reagents in the synthesis of a model layered material: Fe2AlB2. Using synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction, we elucidate the mechanisms of the formation of Fe2AlB2. We highlight the higher reactivity of the intergrowth α-FeB in agreement with structural relationships.

Abstract: International audience; Metal matrix nanocomposites encompassing low-melting point metal nano-inclusions are promising candidates for thermal regulation of devices at high temperature. They are usually processed by solid-state routes that provide access to a limited range of materials and are hardly compatible with complex shaping processes and with large-scale applications. Herein, we develop a liquid-phase processing technique to design aluminum matrix nanocomposites made of phase change nanoparticles, using bismuth nanoparticles as a proof-of-concept. The bismuth nanoparticles derived from colloidal chemistry are first encapsulated in a silica shell and then dispersed by ultrasonication into molten aluminum. Using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we probe the evolution of the bismuth particles and of the inorganic shell. We demonstrate that the silica shell acts as a barrier against extensive coalescence of particles during the dispersion process, thus enabling a decrease and a widening of the phase change temperature range.

Abstract: International audience; Contrary to molecular species, only very few solids are reported to host manganese (V) species. Herein, we report three new compounds with a hydroxyapatite structural backbone built on the Mn V O 4 3− anion: Sr 5 [(Mn 1−x Si x)O 4 ] 3 (OH) 1−3x (x =0 and 0.053), Sr 5 (MnO 4) 3 (OH) 1−y F y (y = 0.90), and Sr 5 [(Mn 1−x Si x)-O 4 ] 3 F 1−3x (x = 0.058). These solids are fully characterized using powder X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic measurements. Especially, we report for the first time EELS Mn−L 2,3 spectra of manganese with the oxidation state (V). Contrary to other Mn(V) oxides, these solids and the nominal compound Sr 5 (MnO 4) 3 OH do not comprise Ba 2+ cations but rely only on Sr 2+ cations, showing that barium is not a required element to stabilize Mn(V) species in inorganic solids. We show that by tuning soft chemistry conditions on the one hand and post-treatment topological transformation conditions on the other hand, Mn(V) and hydroxyl groups can be substituted by Si(IV) and fluoride ions, respectively. Hence, we deliver solids with a potentially wide composition range. These compounds show significant oxygen anionic conduction, thus suggesting the emergence of new functional materials built from high-oxidation state manganese cations.

Abstract: International audience; Rebuilding biological environments is crucial when facing the challenges of fundamental and biomedical research. Thus, preserving the native state of biomolecules is essential. We use electrospinning (ES), which is an extremely promising method for the preparation of fibrillar membranes to mimic the ECM of native tissues. Here, we report for the first time (1) the ES of pure and native collagen into a self-supported membrane in absence of crosslinker and polymer support, (2) the preservation of the membrane integrity in hydrated media in absence of crosslinker and (3) the preservation of the native molecular structure and recovery of the hierarchical assembly of collagen. We use a multiscale approach to characterize collagen native structure at the molecular level using circular dichroism, and to investigate collagen hierarchical organization within the self-supported membrane using a combination of multiphoton and electron microscopies. Finally, we show that the membranes are perfectly suited for cell adhesion and spreading, making them very promising candidates for the development of biomaterials and finding applications in biomedical research.

Abstract: International audience; Idiopathic kidney stones originate mainly from calcium phosphate deposits at the tip of renal papillae, known as Randall’s plaques (RPs), also detected in most human kidneys without stones. However, little is known about the mechanisms involved in RP formation. The localization and characterization of such nano-sized objects in the kidney remains a real challenge making their study arduous. This study provides a nanoscale analysis of the chemical composition and morphology of incipient RPs, characterizing in particular the interface between the mineral and the surrounding organic compounds. Relying on data gathered from a calculi collection, the morphology and chemical composition of incipient calcifications in renal tissue was determined using spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). We detected micro-calcifications and individual nano-calcifications found at some distance from the larger ones. Strikingly, concerning the smaller ones, we show that two types of nano-calcifications coexist: calcified organic vesicles and nanometric mineral granules mainly composed of calcium phosphate with carbonate in their core. Interestingly, some of these nano-calcifications present similarities with those reported in physiological bone or pathological cardiovascular biominerals, suggesting possible common formation mechanisms. However the high diversity of these nano-calcifications suggests that several mechanisms may be involved (nucleation on a carbonate core or on organic compounds). In addition, incipient RPs also appear to present specific features at larger scales revealing secondary calcified structures embedded in a fibrillar organic material. Our study proves that analogies exist between physiological and pathological biominerals and provides information to understand the physico-chemical processes involved in pathological calcification formation.

Abstract: International audience; Incorporating boride nanocrystals could significantly impact the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. Molten salts synthesis offers opportunities to fabricate superhard boride nanoparticles, which can sustain the harsh conditions during the liquid-phase design of metallic nanocomposites. Here hafnium diboride-aluminum nanocomposites are unveiled from molten salt-derived HfB2 nanoparticles sequentially dispersed in aluminum by ultrasound treatment. The structure and size of the nanocrystals are retained in the final nanocomposites, supporting their high chemical stability. Semicoherent interfaces between the nanoparticles and the matrix are then evidenced by TEM, suggesting that the nanocrystals could promote heterogeneous nucleation of Al and then limit the Al grain size to ≈20 µm. Nanoindentation measurements reveal significant grain boundary strengthening and grain refinement effects. It is finally shown that HfB2 nanoparticles also enable a decrease in matrix grain size and an increase in the hardness of the AlSi7Cu0.5Mg0.3 alloy. These proof-of-concept materials are paving the way to light-weight Al matrix nanocomposites doped by molten-salt synthesized nanoparticles.

Abstract: Combining high activity and stability, iridium oxide remains the gold standard material for the oxygen evolution reaction in acidic medium for green hydrogen production. The reasons for the higher electroactivity of amorphous iridium oxides compared to their crystalline counterpart is still the matter of an intense debate in the literature and, a comprehensive understanding is needed to optimize its use and allow for the development of water electrolysis. By producing iridium-based mixed oxides using aerosol, we are able to decouple the electronic processes from the structural transformation, i.e. Ir oxidation from IrO2 crystallization, occurring upon calcination. Full characterization using in situ and ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy allows to unambiguously attribute their high electrochemical activity to structural features and rules out the iridium oxidation state as a critical parameter. This study indicates that short-range ordering, corresponding to sub-2nm crystal size for our samples, drives the activity independently of the initial oxidation state and composition of the calcined iridium oxides., The origins of the superior catalytic activity of poorly crystallized Ir-based oxide material for the OER in acid is still under debate. Here, authors synthesize porous IrMo oxides to deconvolute the effect of Ir oxidation state from short-range ordering and show the latter to be a key factor.

Abstract: We report on a comparative study of photonic sensitivities of organic-inorganic hybrids prepared with size-selected 5 nm titanium-oxo-alkoxo nanoparticles and two different organic phases: HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and MAPTMS (3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane). After organic polymerization, the obtained pHEMA-TiO2 and pMAPTMS-TiO2 hybrids are solids with different inter-component bindings. While surface exchange fixes organic (HEMA than pHEMA) groups on the nanoparticle surface, the titanium-oxo-alkoxo nanoparticles do not interact with the organic component in the pMAPTMS-TiO2 hydrid. Indeed, MAPTMS molecules are hydrolyzed forming condensed Si O Si species. The formation of Si O Ti bonds is observed at the organic thermal polymerization stage, which may be a signature of the silica layer formation at the particles surface. Consequently, the quantum efficiency of the photoinduced charge separation and storage in pMAPTMS-TiO2 hybrids is found considerably lower compared to that in pHEMA-TiO2 hybrids. The 3D micro-structuring of the hybrid solutions has been realized using 2-photon laser polymerization. The structures were mechanically more stable and easier to achieve in pMAPTMS-TiO2 compared to pHEMA-TiO2. Moreover, higher density of the photoinduced electrons decreases the damage threshold in the pHEMA-TiO2 hybrids.

Abstract: International audience; Boron-rich solids exhibit specific crystal structures and unique properties, which are only very scarcely addressed in nanoparticles. In this work, we address the original inorganic structural chemistry and reactivity of boron-rich nanoparticles, by reporting the first occurrence of sodium carbaboride nanocrystals based on the NaB 5 C crystal structure. To design these sub-10 nm nano-objects, we use liquid-phase synthesis in molten salts at 900°C. By combining a set of characterization tools including powder Xray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance coupled to DFT modeling, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we demonstrate that these nanocrystals deviate from the ideal stoichiometry reported for the bulk compound. We suggest that the carbon and sodium contents compensate each other to ensure that the octahedral cluster-based framework is stabilized by fulfilling an electron counting rule. These nanocrystals encompass substituted octahedral covalent structural building units not reported in the related bulk compound. They then shed new light on the ability of nanoparticles to host wide solid solution ranges in covalent solids and then to yield new solids. We finally show that these nanocrystals are efficient single sources of boron and carbon to form a nanostructured boron carbide, thus paving the way to new nanostructured materials.

Abstract: International audience; The development of supported glycosylated lipid layers is an important trend in the field of glyconanomaterials for their interest in understanding sugar-sugar and protein-sugar interactions, these being at the core of cellular, bacterial or viral adhesion. The conventional self-assembled monolayer (SAM) approach generally requires a thiolated glycoconjugate and a gold substrate. In this work, we show how glycolipid amphiphiles of natural origin, commonly known as microbial biosurfactants, can be easily deposited onto a substrate. Spontaneously produced by microorganisms but lacking a thiol group, one can take advantage of their self-assembly properties to prepare homogeneous supported lipid monolayers (SLM). We then choose a saturated glucolipid, G-C18:0, which forms a colloidal lamellar phase under diluted conditions. The lamellae can then be deposited onto a substrate (silicon, gold) using a physical method (dip coating). Dip coating is preferred over more classical deposition methods (Langmuir-Blodgett-LB-, vesicle fusion or spin-coating) because of its versatility, compatibility with aqueous solutions and robust control of the thickness below 10 nm. Defect-free glycosylated SLM from a microbial biosurfactant are then easily developed. A combination of ellipsometry, fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy and infrared nanospectroscopy (AFMIR) show that the glycosylated SLM are defect-free, have a thickness of 2.8 ± 1.0 nm and they are highly homogeneous at scales going from the nm to cm.

Abstract: International audience; We report phase selective synthesis of intermetallic nickel silicide nanocrystals in inorganic molten salts. NiSi and Ni2Si nanocrystals are obtained by reacting a nickel (II) salt and sodium silicide Na4Si4 in the molten LiI-KI inorganic eutectic salt mixture. We report that nickel silicide nanocrystals are precursors to active electrocatalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and may be low-cost alternatives to iridium-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract: International audience; Living tissues, heterogeneous at the microscale, usually scatter light. Strong scattering is responsible for the whiteness of bones, teeth, and brain and is known to limit severely the performances of biomedical optical imaging. Transparency is also found within collagen-based extracellular tissues such as decalcified ivory, fish scales, or cornea. However, its physical origin is still poorly understood. Here, we unveil the presence of a gap of transparency in scattering fibrillar collagen matrices within a narrow range of concentration in the phase diagram. This precholesteric phase presents a three-dimensional (3D) orientational order biomimetic of that in natural tissues. By quantitatively studying the relation between the 3D fibrillar network and the optical and mechanical properties of the macroscopic matrices, we show that transparency results from structural partial order inhibiting light scattering, while preserving mechanical stability, stiffness, and nonlinearity. The striking similarities between synthetic and natural materials provide insights for better understanding the occurring transparency.

Abstract: International audience; Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have seen a fast development as drug delivery carriers thanks to their tunable porosity and high loading capacity. The employ of MSNs in biomedical applications requires a good understanding of their degradation behavior both to control drug release and to assess possible toxicity issues on human health. In this work, we study mesoporous silica degradation in biologically relevant conditions through in situ ellipsometry on model mesoporous nanoparticle or continuous thin films, in buffer solution and in media containing proteins. In order to shed light on the structure/dissolution relationship, we performed dissolution experiments far from soluble silicate species saturation. Via a complete decorrelation of dissolution and diffusion contributions, we proved unambiguously that surface area of silica vectors is the main parameter influencing dissolution kinetics, while thermal treatment and open mesoporous network architecture have a minor impact. As a logical consequence of our dissolution model, we proved that the dissolution lag-time can be promoted by selective blocking of the mesopores that limits the access to the mesoporous internal surface. This study was broadened by studying the impact of the organosilanes in the silica structure, of the presence of residual structuring agents, and of the chemical composition of the dissolution medium. The presence of albumin at blood concentration was found affecting drastically the dissolution kinetics of the mesoporous structure, acting as a diffusion barrier. Globally, we could identify the main factors affecting mesoporous silica materials degradation and proved that we can tune their structure and composition for adjusting dissolution kinetics in order to achieve efficient drug delivery.

Abstract: Titanium reduced oxides TiO2-x occupy, since long time, a prominent place on the landscape of binary metal oxides because of their intriguing ability to form extended defects that affect both the formation of new superlattices and different electronic behaviours. Related to these features, a wide range of practical applications has been achieved. Moved by the conviction of the great potential of understanding the influence of the reactivity, compositional variations and size effects on their functional properties, the aim of this personal account is the optimization of a recently developed strategy for the stabilization of low n Tin O2n-1 terms. In particular, we will focus on the Ti4 O7 composition as well as the incorporation of transition metals, like Mn, in order to deal with new reduced Magneli phases.

Abstract: International audience; Inorganic molten salts are known as fluxes for the synthesis of novel bulk inorganic compounds and of mesostructures and nanostructures with crystal habits different from those observed in more conventional solvents. However, they have not demonstrated the ability to provide mesostructures and nanostructures of complex metal oxides that are currently unreported at the mesoscale and nanoscale. In this report, we show the first occurrence of Sr4Mn3O10 at the mesoscale, as platelets synthesized in molten strontium hydroxide at 600 °C with basal faces of few hundreds of nanometers and thicknesses ranging from 20 to 100 nm. We address carefully the atom-scale structure by transmission electron microscopy, including electron energy loss spectroscopy and electron tomography. We then propose that the final morphology is driven by the surface charge of each facet through surface energy. The reactivity of these platelets is then addressed, highlighting cation leaching when in contact with acidic water, which results in crystalline–amorphous core–shell platelets that are active electrocatalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract: International audience; British 19th century painters formulated gelled systems often described as ideal paint mediums. These so-called megilps or gumtions are based on common paint materials like linseed oil, lead acetate, and mastic resin, and allowed painters such as J.M.W Turner to improve their paint's properties and achieve unprecedented effects in an age of innovation. To propose a structural scheme of these hybrid systems of unprecedented complexity, it is paramount to design and study model systems using a broad combination of advanced spectroscopic techniques and microscopies. Through this approach, gel Mediums can be described as nanocomposites based on lead metallogels co-existing with lead oxide nanoparticles and a partially polymerized fraction. These functional hybrid materials created a real breakthrough on 19th century paints performances.

Abstract: International audience; The surface self-assembly properties of acidic sophorolipids, a bolaform microbial glycolipids with pH-responsive properties in solution, were studied based on the chemical nature of the support and pH of the solution. Sophorolipids generally form micelles in water but formation of morphologies like platelets and twisted fibers depending on pH have also been reported. The surface self-assembly was achieved using dip-coating on three different substrates namely gold, silicon(111) and TiO 2 anatase. Deposition conditions (dip-coating withdrawal speed, relative humidity, temperature) were tested, and it was found that optimum self-assembly occurred at a withdrawal speed of 1 mm s À1 , T of 25 1C and relative humidity of 25%. The local structure of the sophorolipid films was characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy, while Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to characterize the spatial homogeneity. We also attempted to correlate dispersive, electron donor and electron attractor surface energy components, using Good–Van Oss's approach, and the behavior of sophorolipids. We found that when the surface energy is dominated by dispersive components, sophorolipids spontaneously assemble into entangled needles at all pH values (4, 6 and 11). However, when the surface energy is dominated by electronic components, pH has a strong influence on the surface self-assembly. We could discriminate three major organizations: homogeneous layer, isolated aggregates and a two-dimensional network similar to block copolymer surface self-assembly.

Abstract: Extracellular matrices (ECM) rich in type I collagen exhibit characteristic anisotropic ultrastructures. Nevertheless, working in vitro with this biomacromolecule remains challenging. When processed, denaturation of the collagen molecule is easily induced in vitro avoiding proper fibril self-assembly and further hierarchical order. Here, an innovative approach enables the production of highly concentrated injectable collagen microparticles, based on collagen molecules self-assembly, thanks to the use of spray-drying process. The versatility of the process is shown by performing encapsulation of secretion products of gingival mesenchymal stem cells (gMSCs), which are chosen as a bioactive therapeutic product for their potential efficiency in stimulating the regeneration of a damaged ECM. The injection of collagen microparticles in a cell culture medium results in a locally organized fibrillar matrix. The efficiency of this approach for making easily handleable collagen microparticles for encapsulation and injection opens perspectives in active tissue regeneration and 3D bioprinted scaffolds.

Abstract: New synthetic pathways are proposed for the synthesis of a new set of bolaamphiphilic derivatives starting from microbiologically produced sophorolipids. A total set of 43 new derivatives was synthesized Via reductive amination of a previously synthesized sophorolipid aldehyde with diamines and primary amines. The new derivatives were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values were determined for the active compounds. Transfection efficiencies were also evaluated for some of the deprotected derivatives via the assessment of their capacity to transfect three different eukaryotic cell lines in vitro. Finally, the self-assembly properties were evaluated for the deprotected derivatives. Antimicrobial activities were mostly observed for the peracetylated mono- or dicationic bolaamphiphiles and only the deprotected monocationic bolaamphiphile with an octadecyl chain on the nitrogen atom was eligible for the evaluation of its transfection properties. Evaluation of the self-assembly properties indicated that the presence of an octadecyl chain was necessary for micelle formation. Both micelle formation and the net charge of the compounds seem to have an influence on the antimicrobial activity and transfection efficiency. These results are promising for use of bolaamphiphilic sophorolipids in medical and self-assembly applications., Dans ce travail de nouveaux composés amphiphiles cationiques sont préparés à partir de sophoro lipides. Abstract: International audience; Prussian Blue Analog (PBA) nanoparticles were formed on a heterogeneous nanostructured surface made of an ordered nanoperforated titanium oxide thin ﬁlm deposited on a gold layer. The study of the nanocomposite ﬁlm by grazing-incidence wide angle X-ray scattering, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy shows that the PBA particles are precisely positioned within all the perforations of the oxide ﬁlm over very large surface areas. Further investigation on the formation of the PBA particles demonstrates a decisive role of a heterogeneous nucleation of the coordination polymer driven by well-adjusted surfaces energies and reactant concentrations in the spatial positioning of the PBA particles. Thanks to the well-controlled positioning of the particles within the ordered nanoperforations, the latter were successfully used as nano crucibles for the local transformation of PBA into the corresponding metal alloy by heat treatment. The thin ﬁlm heterostructure thus obtained, made of ferromagnetic islands isolated by diamagnetic walls, opens interesting perspectives for the design of magnetic storage devices.

Abstract: International audience; The mesoporous iron polycarboxylate MIL-100(Fe) was synthesized in the presence of Pseudomonas putida bacteria. The synthesis was performed under green conditions, i.e., pure aqueous media at 30 °C that were compatible with the preservation of the cell membrane integrity. Interestingly, the resulting biohybrid exhibited a very different microstructure than a physical mixture of the two components, as it led to the formation of a novel living material featuring an exoskeleton encapsulating individual bacteria cell. Remarkably, TEM and STEM observations on cross sections revealed that this shell was not directly in contact with the cell wall, suggesting the exopolysaccharides network promotes strong interactions with the MOF precursors, leading to high proximity between the two components.

Abstract: International audience; The first demonstration of a nanoscaled titanium zirconium nitride (TiZrN2) single-phase isolated during the preparation of polymer-derived silicon nitride (Si3N4) matrix nanocomposites is discussed. We employed a polysilazane, which was chemically modified with Zr[N(CH2CH3)2]4 and Ti[N(CH3)2]4 then ammonolyzed before a pyrolysis step under ammonia (1000 °C) and a heat-treatment in flowing nitrogen (1000–1700 °C). Based on a careful control of the precursor chemistry in the early stage of the process and nano-/microstructural investigations of the material performed during its preparation, we were able to identify TiZrN2 nanocrystals with a size as low as 9 nm distributed in α- and β-Si3N4 phases at a temperature as low as 1500 °C. We particularly proved that the TiZrN2 nanophase could be generated because of the use of the polysilazane evoluting towards a covalently-bonded Si3N4 matrix . This unique nanostructure is expected to provide particular functionality to Si3N4 as noble metal-free catalysts and components with high plasmonic quality.

Abstract: International audience; The interplay between crystallization and phosphorus diffusion in the versatile synthesis of metal phosphide nanoparticles from well-defined metal nanoparticles is studied by using a favorable "P(0)" source for mechanistic studies: white phosphorus. In this study, the reaction of Ni, Fe, Pd, and Cu nanoparticles with P 4 was quantitative even at relatively low temperatures thanks to the high reactivity of this soluble "P" source. Intermediate amorphous alloys could be identified for the first time in the case of Fe and Pd, while the quantitative character of the reaction provided a selective and controlled access to Pd 5 P 4 versus PdP 2 and Cu 3 P versus CuP 2. Morphological evolution of the nanoparticles with temperature and M/P stoichiometry was also discussed and provided new insights in the kinetics of the reaction in each case. Hollow Ni 2 P and FeP nanoparticles were finally obtained while the particularly high stability of the amorphous plain Pd 3 P nanoparticles was uncovered.

Abstract: International audience; Na(3)V(2)(PO(4))(2)FO(2) is a promising candidate for practical use as a positive electrode material in Na-ion batteries thanks to its high voltage and excellent structural stability upon cycling. However, its limited intrinsic transport properties limit its performance at fast charge/discharge rates. In this work, two efficient approaches are presented to optimize the electrical conductivity of the electrode material: particle nanosizing and particle coating with an ionic liquid (IL). The former reveals that particle downsizing from micrometer to nanometer range improves the electronic conductivity by more than two orders of magnitude, which greatly improves the rate capability without affecting the capacity retention. The second approch dealing with an original surface modification by applying an IL coating strongly enhances the ionic mobility and offers new perspectives to improve the energy storage performance by designing the electrode materials' surface composition.

Abstract: Standardin vitrocell culture is one of the pillars of biomedical science. However, there is increasing evidence that 2D systems provide biological responses that are often in disagreement within vivoobservations, partially due to limitations in reproducing the native cellular microenvironment. 3D materials that are able to mimic the native cellular microenvironment to a greater extent tackle these limitations. Here, we report Porous yet Dense (PyD) type I collagen materials obtained by ice-templating followed by topotactic fibrillogenesis. These materials combine extensive macroporosity, favouring the cell migration and nutrients exchange, as well as dense collagen walls, which mimic locally the Extracellular Matrix. When seeded with Normal Human Dermal Fibroblasts (NHDFs), PyD matrices allow for a faster and more extensive colonisation when compared with equivalent Non-Porous matrices. The textural properties of the PyD materials also impact cytoskeletal and nuclear 3D morphometric parameters. Due to the effectiveness in creating a biomimetic 3D environment for NHDFs and the ability to promote cell culture for more than 28 days without subculture, we anticipate that PyD materials could configure an important step towardsin vitrosystems applicable to other cell types and with higher physiological relevance.

Abstract: Pulsed field gradient 1 H NMR spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the association behavior of the Sn 1 2 -oxo cluster macrocation [(BuSn) 1 2 O 1 4 (OH) 6 ] 2 + with two different and smaller anions, p-toluenesulfonate (PTS - ) and diphenylphosphinate (Ph 2 PO 2 -). By monitoring the translational diffusion coefficients of the various species involved, it is shown that the association depends on the anion involved and on the solvent used. Moreover, the possibility to individually monitor the diffusion characteristics of multiple anionic and cationic species in mixtures, by virtue of resolved 1 H resonances available from each species, allows us to evidence the occurrence of ion exchange in such systems. Thus when [(BuSn) 1 2 O 1 4 (OH) 6 ](PTS) 2 is mixed with two equivalents of Ph 2 PO 2 NMe 4 , PTS- is displaced by Ph 2 PO 2 -, highlighting the greater affinity of the organotin macrocation for the diphenylphosphinate. This example clearly illustrates the potential of pulsed field gradient 1 H NMR spectroscopy in inorganic/organometallic chemistry, to follow preferential ion pairing in multi-ion systems at the level of each individually charged species.

Abstract: The chemical strategies offered by combining sol-gel processes together with the templated growth of inorganic or hybrid networks involving self-assembly with surfactant mesophases or organogels, and with external solicitations allows us, through an intelligent and tuned coding, to develop innovative materials having complex architectures. These methods where chemistry and process are strongly coupled, allow directing the assembling of a large variety of molecular precursors, oligomers, clusters or nanoparticles (nanobuilding blocks) into functional hierarchical structures. In this short review article, the different strategies allowing to design nanostructured and/or microtextured inorganic and hybrid materials shaped as thick or thin films, microparticles and fibres are illustrated with several striking examples developed in our research group. Abstract: This article describes hybrid materials and systems in which the core integrity of inorganic nanobuilding blocks (NBBs) is preserved and reviews the main synthetic procedures presented in the literature. The relation between the NBB and the resulting hybrid networks is discussed for several striking examples: silicon and tin oxo clusters, polyoxometalates, and transition metal−oxo-based clusters. This approach is extended to nanoparticule-based hybrids. The chemical strategies offered by the coupling of soft chemistry processes and this approach based on functional NBBs allows, through an intelligent and tuned coding, to develop a new vectorial chemistry that is able to direct the assembly of a large variety of structurally well-defined clusters or nanoparticles into complex architectures.

Abstract: International audience; The electrochemical surface area (ECSA) is a critical property to describe, analyze and compare electrocatalysts. The determination of the mass activity of a given catalyst is associated with this parameter which can thus lead to materials benchmarking. Reliable and robust methods to measure ECSA are needed, and those have to accommodate different structures, morphologies and compositions. In this study, we investigate mercury underpotential deposition (HgUPD) as a way to estimate ECSA for ultraporous electrocatalysts based on iridium and iridium-molybdenum electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction. Results reveal a clear agreement between physisorption measurements and HgUPD with excellent reproducibility. The method shows also that pre- and post-catalysis surface area measurements are not affected by the catalytic process on short timescale, opening the possibility of electrocalyst stability and degradation monitoring.

Abstract: This paper reports the study of manganese substituted barium fluoroapatite Ba10(P1−xMnxO4)6F2 with 0 ≤ × ≤ 0.20. X-rays diffraction investigation indicates that the phosphate-manganate solid solution is complete, at least for this composition range, and follows Vegard's law, while diffuse reflectance and fluorescence spectra confirm that Mn(V) substitutes for P(V) in the barium apatite lattice. EXAFS experiment, at the manganese K edge, performed on the x = 0.2 compound, indicates that the Mn(V)-O distance is 1.73 A, a much larger value than the P-O distance equal to 1.54 A. The (MnO4)3− vibrational mode frequencies, deduced from the IR and Raman spectra are almost independent of the x value. This indicates that, even at very low manganese content (x = 0.001), the Mn-O distance is also very close to 1.73 A. The Mn(V) ion distorts the barium apatite lattice to a large extent when it substitutes for P(V) and imposes its own size to the host sites.

Abstract: International audience; Poly (methacrylic acid) (PMAA) solutions are known to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). A temperature-composition phase diagram of PMAA has been constructed by standard cloud point determination through transmittance measurements, and also by studying the steady states reached under phase separation. This allows us to reconstruct the binodal curve describing the phase behavior of PMAA for both low and high concentration regimes, and to determine accurately the LCST temperature. In a second step, the structures formed following a temperature jump above the cloud point and their evolution in time have been investigated at the nanoscale using small angle neutron scattering (SANS). This approach shows that the formation of phaseseparated nanostructures is a slow process, requiring more than 12 h. The formed structures are then shown to depend on the amplitude of the temperature jump above the cloud point. An original mechanism of phase separation is identified in the semi-dilute regime. The growth of micrometricsize droplets with an inner structure displaying the rheological properties of a gel leads to the formation of a percolating network which hinders the influence of gravity. Such a result can explain the slow kinetics of the PMAA LCST transition.

Abstract: The role of homogeneity in the reactivity of multicomponent powders resulting from solution synthesis is discussed. Examples have been given in perovskite-derived systems, such as superconducting cuprates and ferroelectric PbTi 1- x Zr x O 3 , which are of technological interest. Also, metastable structures may be obtained by low-temperature synthesis, as observed in the PbO-ZrO 2 system. In this system, we discuss the opposing effects of homogeneity and diffusion kinetics during the calcination steps and heating process.

Abstract: The reaction of phosphoric acid with titanium alkoxides for a PO4/Ti ratio ranging from 0.5 to 2 was investigated. For these compositions, amorphous precipitates are obtained. Their microstructure has been studied by means of Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The phosphatation of titanium alkoxide increases the Ti coordination number to 6 and the symmetry becomes purely octahedral for a P/Ti ratio of 2. For the composition range 0 < PO4/Ti ⩽ 2, phosphate anions are homogeneously dispersed in the precipitate and bound to titanium, the coordination of which is completed by oxo-, hydroxo- and remaining alkoxy- groups. Short TiO distances are observed in the materials having the lowest P/Ti ratios.

Abstract: Gels of ZrO 2 -SiO 2 doped with small amounts of vanadium have been prepared from alkoxides. The stabilization of tetragonal zirconia in the amorphous silica matrix at low firing temperatures and a blue solid solution of vanadium in zircon structure above 1200°C has been identified. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) shows that vanadium (IV) occupies three kinds of sites in the composite: one with C 4 v symmetry located at the solid surface like [VO(H 2 O) 5 ] 2+ , another diluted in the solid and coordina ted to oxygens like in V 2 O 5 structure, and the latest, forming clusters of V(IV) in dipolar interaction. The EPR signal of these clusters increases with the zircon crystallization.

Abstract: Dense collagen hydrogels are promising biomaterials for several tissue-engineering applications. They exhibit high mechanical properties, similar to physiological extracellular matrices, and do not shrink under cellular activity. However, they suffer from several drawbacks, such as weak nutrient and O2 diffusion, impacting cell survival. Here, we report a novel strategy to create a perfusion system within dense and thick collagen hydrogels to promote cell viability. The 3D printing of a thermoplastic filament (high-impact polystyrene, HIPS) with a three-wave shape is used to produce an appropriate sacrificial matrix. The HIPS thermoplastic polymer allows for good shape fidelity of the filament and does not collapse under the mechanical load of the collagen solution. After the collagen gels around the filament and dissolves, a channel is generated, allowing for adequate and rapid hydrogel perfusion. The dissolution process does not alter the collagen hydrogel’s physical or chemical properties, and the perfusion is associated with an increased fibroblast survival. Here, we report the novel utilization of thermoplastics to generate a perfusion network within biomimetic collagen hydrogels.

Abstract: Today the capability to rationally design and construct hybrid materials utilizing a performance-property driven methodology is strongly dependent on our ability to control the structure and the dynamics of hybrid interfaces. This control needs a deep knowledge of their molecular and supramolecular dynamics that must be evaluated in situ, in the soft matter or colloidal states. For this purpose the use of modern methodologies of characterization such as time resolved synchrotron experiments and advanced pulsed field gradient NMR methods (DOSY) is particularly relevant. In this critical review, two important examples are discussed. They concern, first, the study of surface capping organic components' affinity towards nanoparticle surfaces by DOSY NMR. The knowledge and therefore the tuning of this affinity is paramount because it controls solubility, transferability and stability of colloidal dispersions of nanoparticles (NPs). In the second part, the mechanism of micellar templated formation of hybrid mesophases will be discussed in the frame of the main results obtained via in situ SAXS (107 references).

Abstract: Because of their role of information transmitter between the spinal cord and the muscle fibers, motor neurons are subject to physical stimulation and mechanical property modifications. We report on motoneuron elasticity investigated by time-resolved pump and probe spectroscopy. A dual picosecond geometry simultaneously probing the acoustic impedance mismatch at the cell-titanium transducer interface and acoustic wave propagation inside the motoneuron is presented. Such noncontact and nondestructive microscopy, correlated to standard atomic force microscopy or a fluorescent labels approach, has been carried out on a single cell to address some physical properties such as bulk modulus of elasticity, dynamical longitudinal viscosity, and adhesion.

Abstract: International audience; Transition metal carbides (TMCs) have attracted great interest due to their mechanical and catalytic properties but their syntheses generally require energy-consuming processes with temperatures above 800 °C. We report here a solid-state metathesis reaction between metal chlorides (ZrCl 4 , NbCl 5 , MoCl 3 , MoCl 5 , HfCl 4 , TaCl 5 , WCl 6) and potassium dispersed in carbon (graphite or acetylene black). The reaction is initiated at room temperature or with gentle heating below 75 °C. Within seconds, it produces carbon-supported carbide or metallic nanoparticles of diameter below 50 nm. The phase speciation depends on the metal and different process parameters. In some cases (ZrCl 4 , NbCl 5 , HfCl 4 , TaCl 5), the metal is further converted into a hydride upon neutralization of the reaction crude with ethanol. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Based on thermodynamic and kinetic considerations, we propose a mechanism explaining the coexistence of several phases (metal, carbide, hydride) and their occurrence at each step of the reaction.

Abstract: International audience; Silk fibroin (SF) based hydrogels have been exploited for years for their inherent biocompatibility and favorable mechanical properties which makes them interesting for biotechnology applications. In this study we investigate silk based composite hydrogels where pH-sensitive, anionic biosurfactant assemblies (sophorolipids SL-C18:1 and SL-C18:0), are employed to improve the present properties of SF. Results suggest that the presence of SL surfactant assemblies leads to faster gelling of SF by accelerating the refolding from random coil to-sheet as shown by infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) including contrast matching studies show that SF and SL assemblies coexist in a fibrillary network that is, in the case of SL-C18:0, interpenetrating. The resulting overall network structure in composite gels is slightly more affected by SL-C18:1 than by SL-C18:0, whereas the structure of both SF and surfactant assemblies remains unchanged. No disassembly of SL surfactant structures is observed, which gives a new perspective on SF-surfactant interactions. The hydrophobic effect within SF is favored in presence of SL, leading to faster refolding of SF into-sheet conformation. The presented composite gels, being an interpenetrating network of which one compound (SL-C18:0) can be tweaked by pH, open an interesting option towards improved workability and stimuli responsive mechanical properties of SF based hydrogels with possible applications in controlled cell culture and tissue engineering or drug delivery. The presented SANS analysis approach has the potential to be expanded to other protein-surfactant systems and composite hydrogels.

Abstract: International audience; HypothesisDispersions of Laponite in water may form gels, the rheological properties of which being possibly tuned by the addition of polymer chains. Laponite-based hydrogels with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were the most widely investigated systems and the PEO chains were then found to reduce the elastic modulus.ExperimentsHere, hydrogels based on Laponite and poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (POXA) were considered. The adsorption behavior and the local structures within these nanocomposite gels were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering and NMR. The same materials were macroscopically characterized using rheology.FindingsAn original evolution of the storage modulus G' with the POXA concentration is evidenced compared to Laponite/PEO hydrogels. At low POXA concentrations, a continuous reduction of G' is observed upon increasing the polymer content, as with PEO, due to the screening of electrostatic interactions between the clay platelets. However, above a critical value of the POXA concentration, G' increases with the polymer content. This difference with PEO-based hydrogels is correlated to the stronger affinity of POXA chains for the clay surfaces, which results in the reduction of the inhomogeneities for the Laponite disks within the gels. Steric repulsions would then counterbalance the effect of electrostatic repulsions and lead to the strengthening of the POXA-based hydrogels.

Abstract: International audience; Quantification of skeletal muscle functional contraction is essential to assess the outcomes of therapeutic procedures for neuromuscular disorders. Muscle three-dimensional "Organ-on-chip" models usually require a substantial amount of biological material, which rarely can be obtained from patient biopsies. Here, we developed a miniaturized 3D myotube culture chip with contraction monitoring capacity at the single cell level. Optimized micropatterned substrate design enabled to obtain high culture yields in tightly controlled microenvironments, with myotubes derived from primary human myoblasts displaying spontaneous contractions. Analysis of nuclear morphology confirmed similar myonuclei structure between obtained myotubes and in vivo myofibers, as compared to 2D monolayers. LMNA-related Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (L-CMD) was modeled with successful development of diseased 3D myotubes displaying reduced contraction. The miniaturized myotube technology can thus be used to study contraction characteristics and evaluate how diseases affect muscle organization and force generation. Importantly, it requires significantly fewer starting materials than current systems, which should substantially improve drug screening capability.

Abstract: International audience; ConspectusThe properties of a material depend upon its physical characteristics, one of these being its crystalline state. Next generation solid-state technologies will integrate crystalline oxides into thermal sensitive processes and composite materials. Crystallization of amorphous phases of metal oxides in the solid state typically requires substantial energy input to induce the amorphous to crystalline phase transformation. In the case of silica, the transformation to α-quartz in a furnace occurs above 1300 °C and that of titania, above 400 °C. These calcination processes are costly in energy but also often degrade complex material architectures or compositions.Thus, low temperature crystallization techniques are required that preserve macro- and mesostructures and complex elemental composition (e.g., organic-, metal-, and semiconductor-metal oxide hybrids/composites). Some solution-based techniques exist to directly fabricate crystalline metal oxides. However, these are not always compatible with the specificities of the system or industrial constraints. A postsynthetic, solid-state approach that reduces crystallization temperature in metal oxides is metal-induced crystallization (MIC).MIC is the introduction of catalytic amounts of a cation, which can be an s-block, p-block, or d-block cation, that migrates through the solid metal oxide lattice. The cation is thought to temporarily break metal oxide bonds, allowing [MOx] polyhedra to rotate and reform bonds with neighboring [MOx] groups in a lower energy crystalline phase. Depending on the system, the cation can favor or defavor the formation of a particular crystalline phase, providing a means to tune the purity and crystalline phase ratios. An advantage of MIC is that, although the crystallization occurs in the solid state, the crystallization process can be accomplished for particle suspensions in liquid media. In this case, the energy required to induce the crystallization can come from, for example, a microwave or an ultrasound bath. The crystallization of particles in suspension avoids aggregation from particle–particle sintering. In the case of thin films, the energy for crystallization typically comes from a laser or calcination.MIC is only recently being used as a low temperature metal oxide crystallization technique, despite being widely used in the semiconductor industry. Here, the mechanism and previous studies in MIC are presented for titania, silica, and other oxides. The beauty of this technique is that it is extremely easy to employ: cations can be incorporated into the system postsynthetically and then are often expelled from the lattice upon phase conversion. We expect MIC to enrich materials for photochromic, optoelectronic, catalyst, biological, and other applications.

Abstract: International audience; Calcium oxalate minerals of the general formula CaC2O4.xH2O are widely present in nature and usually associated with pathological calcifications, constituting up to 70−80% of the mineral component of renal calculi. The monohydrate phase (CaC2O4.H2O, COM) is the most stable form, accounting for the majority of the hydrated calcium oxalates found. These mineral phases have been studied extensively via X-ray diffraction and IRspectroscopy and, to a lesser extent, using 1H, 13C, and 43Ca solidstate NMR spectroscopy. However, several aspects of their structure and reactivity are still unclear, such as the evolution from low- to high-temperature COM structures (LT-COM and HT-COM, respectively) and the involvement of water molecules in this phase transition. Here, we report for the first time a 17O and 2H solid-state NMR investigation of the local structure and dynamics of water in the COM phase. A new procedure for the selective 17O- and 2H-isotopic enrichment of water molecules within the COM mineral is presented using mechanochemistry, which employsonly microliter quantities of enriched water and leads to exchange yields up to ∼30%. 17O NMR allows both crystallographically inequivalent water molecules in the LT-COM structure to be resolved, while 2H NMR studies provide unambiguous evidence that these water molecules are undergoing different types of motions at high temperatures without exchanging with one another. Dynamics appear to be essential for water molecules in these structures, which have not been accounted for in previous structuralstudies on the HT-COM structure due to lack of available tools, highlighting the importance of such NMR investigations for refining the overall knowledge on biologically relevant minerals like calcium oxalates.

Abstract: International audience; Complex battery degradation is an interplay of different processes correlated to the thermodynamic, chemical, and mechanical instability of materials. Their degradation kinetics and mechanisms are functions of several intrinsic and environmental conditions. The degradation of the battery cell can be minimized by using preventive steps, like artificial interphases, coatings, additives, or materials that operate within the thermodynamic stability voltage window. Like in most systems/applications degradation processes/aging cannot be avoided since battery cells operate in different environments. Self-healing functionalities have been proved in different areas of material science and they can significantly improve the performance of battery cells. Some of them have been demonstrated on the laboratory scale, while other degradation processes have been tackled only by the development of preventive approaches. Since self-healing functionalities add additional weight and cost to the battery cell, directions of development should be focused on modification of nonactive materials, preferably based on biosourced materials to lower environmental impact. Important issues include detection of degradation using sensors and the vectorization of self-healing components and their controlled release. In addition to this, a triggering process of extrinsic self-healing components together with manufacturability and recyclability should be considered from the early stages of the development phase.

Abstract: Cryopreservation is the only fully established procedure to extend the lifespan of living cells and tissues, a key to activities spanning from fundamental biology to clinical practice. Despite its prevalence and impact, central aspects of cryopreservation, such as the cell's physico-chemical environment during freezing, remain elusive. Here we address that question by coupling in situ microscopic directional freezing to visualize cells and their surroundings during freezing with the freezing medium phase diagram. We extract the freezing medium spatial distribution in cryopreservation, providing a tool to describe the cell vicinity at any point during freezing. We show that two major events define the cells' local environment over time: the interaction with the moving ice front and with the vitreous moving front - a term we introduce here. Our correlative strategy may be applied to cells relevant in clinical research and practice, and help designing new cryoprotective media based on local physico-chemical cues., 31 pages, 4 figures, 7 supplementary figures
