Purpose As retailers have increasingly embraced an omnichannel retailing strategy, explaining and predicting the helpfulness of online review should consider both online-based and offline-based reviews. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach Based on the signaling theory, this study intends to examine the impacts of review-related and reviewer-related signals on review helpfulness in the context of omnichannel retailing. The proposed research model and corresponding hypotheses were tested by using negative binomial regression. Findings The results shown that both review-related (review rating and review sentiment strength) and reviewer-related (reviewer real name and reviewer expertise) signals positively affect review helpfulness. Contrary to the authors’ expectations, review length negatively affects review helpfulness. Specifically, when the review submitted from an omnichannel retailer’s offline channel, the positive impacts of reviewer real name on review helpfulness will be stronger, and the positive impacts of reviewer expertise on review helpfulness will be weaker. Originality/value Unlike many previous studies tend to explore the antecedents of review helpfulness in a single-channel setting, the study examined the factors that affect review helpfulness in an omnichannel retailing context.

The water-cooled chiller is one of the indispensable equipment in each building. Due to long-term use or improper operation, it is easy to cause components of the equipment to be wore out, generating additional energy consumption, and even causing malfunction. In this study, we used technology of IoT (Internet of Things) to upload the operating parameters and data in each period of every water-cooled chiller to the cloud, and presented the visualized result. Managers were able to understand the current status of each water-cooled chiller much easier with the visualized results, and at the same time we conducted predictive analysis on the collected water-cooled chiller data. If we can predict the COP (Coefficient Of Performance) value trend accurately, managers can effectively arrange personnel to carry out the maintenance work of each water-cooled chiller to reduce unnecessary energy and cost losses.

Despite mobile government microblogging service (GMS) initially attracted a huge number of followers, its discontinuance rate remains high. How to lead citizens to continue use mobile GMS is a question that many government agencies are asking. The present study attempts to understand the factors that affect mobile GMS continuance by focusing on the influences of perceived integration and perceived interactivity on citizens’ value evaluations. The research model was empirically tested against data collected from 619 mobile GMS users in China. The results of structural equation modeling analysis shown that perceived (online-offline) integration and perceived (citizen-government) interactivity positively affect both two extrinsic values (information value and social value), and two intrinsic values (hedonic value and emotional value) of using mobile GMS. Information value, social value, and hedonic value in turn further positively affect mobile GMS continuance. However, the influence of emotional value on mobile GMS continuance was not significant. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are also presented.

PurposeOnline retailers widely use self-service parcel delivery as a solution to the last-mile logistics problems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that affect the consumer’s intention to use self-service parcel delivery service.Design/methodology/approachThe authors integrate prior research and propose a comprehensive three-factor model. The study combines individual and situational factors and proposes a socialized factor.FindingsThis study found that location convenience, optimism, innovation, and the need for human interaction positively affect the consumer’s intention to avail of the self-service parcel delivery service. It also identifies that socialized factor positively influences the consumer’s intention to use self-service parcel delivery services.Research limitations/implicationsThe test results show that the explanatory power of the individual factors of the model is better than that of the situational factors. However, this does not imply that the situational factors cannot explain the consumer behavior well. Future studies should employ additional situational factors to explain the consumer behavior.Practical implicationsThis study offers valuable theoretical and managerial implications. Delivery service providers should concentrate on their marketing force and customize their services for consumer groups who have specific individual characteristics, such as optimism and innovation.Social implicationsStrengthening service interactions in the social factor and choosing optimal locations for self-service pickup machines are also essential for the expansion of the users’ population and enhancement of service experience.Originality/valueThe authors combined situational and individual factors, proposed a socialized factor, and presented the three-factor model of the consumer’s intention to use self-service parcel delivery service.

Mobile shopping on smartphone platform is becoming popular in many countries. Motivated by research suggesting that behavioral models do not universally hold across cultures, this study investigated mobile shopping continuance intentions under the influence of user espoused cultural values in China and the United States. A research model drawing on UTAUT was developed with perceived effort expectancy, performance expectancy, mobile social influence, and privacy protection as the key determinants. Data from a US sample of 656 and a Chinese sample of 866 were analyzed using Partial Least Square (PLS) procedures to test this model, including the hypothesized antecedent role of some espoused cultural values. The product-indicator approach was adopted to test the hypothesized moderating effect from the espoused cultural values. Contrary to our expectation, the empirical data did not show strong support for the moderating effect of the espoused cultural values. Our data show espoused cultural values more of an antecedent or predictor of mobile shopping continuance. The findings show that culture exerts impact on the mobile shopping continuance decision process both at the macro (country difference) and micro (individual difference as espoused values) level. Relevant discussion, limitations and implications are also provided.

This study proposed a generic work zone evaluation tool driven by a dynamic macroscopic traffic model. The tool can investigate the effects of a work zone on freeway conditions. The classical freeway traffic network model METANET was extended to better capture typical work zone characteristics in terms of speed and capacity reductions through modifying its speed-density relationship functions. The tool can present profiles of traffic state variables, system-level performance indices, and annotated traffic conditions maps. It was used to develop a prototype computer-aided decision support system and applied in two simulation-based case studies. Case studies show that it is effective and useful for understanding complicated work zone impacts and can aid in better design and assessment of work zone plans. It can be integrated in a dynamic transportation management system for better communication between road operator and travellers.

Mobile commerce has become the predominant form of electronic commerce in many countries. This study examines the impacts of mobility, privacy protection, and social influence on mobile payment m-payment continuance and the moderation effects of espoused cultural values. A research model rooted in expectation–confirmation theory was tested using 724 usable responses from smartphone m-payment users in China. The results revealed that post-usage privacy protection and social influence beliefs drove user continuous intentions direct towards m-payment, and post-usage mobility belief had an indirect impact via user satisfaction. The espoused cultural value uncertainty avoidance served as an antecedent of perceived social influence and mobility. The espoused cultural value power distance served as an antecedent of perceived privacy protection. Implications, limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.

Purpose – Social capital has been identified as a valuable resource that can lead to various positive outcomes of social activities in both online and offline communities. The purpose of this paper is to argue that social capital can also be an important ingredient in the development of adverse outcomes, such as technology addiction. Design/methodology/approach – Based on social capital theory and prior research related to perceived integration, a research model that reflects the effects of online and offline social capitals as well as perceived integration on mobile social networking service (SNS) addiction was developed and empirically examined based on data collected from 458 mobile SNS users in China. Findings – The structural equation modeling analysis shows that online social interaction ties and online social supports positively affect mobile SNS addiction, whereas offline social supports and online social identification negatively affect mobile SNS addiction. In addition, perceived integration between online and offline channels by using mobile SNS positively influences online social interaction ties, offline social interaction ties, and mobile SNS addiction. Practical implications – From the practical perspective, the results of the study offer interesting implications for managing mobile SNS addiction. The study found that online social interaction ties and online social support positively influence mobile SNS addiction, whereas offline social support negatively influence mobile SNS addiction. Social implications – The mobile SNS users should invest more time to participate in offline social activities and maintain good social relationships with their family, colleagues, and friends in the real world. Originality/value – The present study has both theoretical and practical implications. From a theoretical perspective, unlike many previous studies tend to regard social capital as the predictor of positive outcomes of users’ social activities, the study contributes to the extant information systems literature by exploring the potential negative consequences of social capital on users’ social lives. The results of the study indicate that social capital is a significant predictor of mobile SNS addiction.

Government microblogging services (GMS) have become increasingly popular among the public, yet retaining current users and facilitating their continuance intention remain a great challenge. This study examines how citizens' perceived interactivity of GMS, including control, playfulness, connectedness, and responsiveness, influences their satisfaction and trust, which in turn jointly affect their continuance intention. Drawing upon data from an online survey of 303 respondents who had used GMS, the structural equation modelling analysis results show that perceived control, playfulness, and connectedness positively influence citizens' satisfaction and trust, which further positively affect GMS continuance intention. Moreover, in terms of the path coefficient and the significance level, playfulness exerts the strongest effect on satisfaction, while control exerts the strongest impact on trust. Compared with satisfaction, trust is a more salient determinant of GMS continuance usage. We derive both theoretical and practical implications of the findings with a focus on mobile social media.

Public service availability and quality remain relatively low in the rural areas, particularly in developing countries. Microblog has been employed in the rural areas to enhance public services. We propose that by facilitating collaboration among public employees and enabling supervision of their services, microblog can help enhance the public service climate and improve public service performance in the rural areas. A research model is developed to evaluate the importance of microblog affordance and public service capabilities based on the service climate theory. Through surveying the grassroots public employees in 382 villages, we find that the collaboration and supervision affordances of microblog are important in leading to better public service climate. While the collaboration affordance of microblog has both direct and indirect effects, its supervision affordance effect is indirect through enhancing the content delivery and service fulfillment capacities. Furthermore, our additional analysis shows that public service climate can raise the service satisfaction of the rural citizens. The findings show that microblog adoption enhances public service climate in the rural areas where less attention is given. A set of important recommendations are provided to public administrators on how they can more effectively leverage on the emerging microblog technology in the rural context.

Purpose – Considering the lack of understanding of the mobile applications (mobile apps) market and low usage rates among Malaysians, Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) was adapted to investigate the determinants of consumer behavioural intention (BI) to use mobile apps. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 288 sample data was collected and analysed using partial least square equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method. Findings – All of UTAUT2 constructs (i.e. performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, and habit), except for price value and social influence, significantly relate with BI to use mobile applications. Habit was reported to have the strongest influence. Gender and educational level were found to be insignificant moderators. Practical implications – Mobile application developers could have better understanding on users’ needs and intention, based on the findings. Originality/value – In order to shed light on current problems, and there is a dearth in relevant studies which could resolve the issue, this paper contributes the necessary knowledge on mobile apps acceptance to developers. Educational level was added into UTAUT2 as a moderator in addition to gender.

The degree of inflation persistence fluctuates more in developing countries than in industrialized countries. This is because there are more economic reforms in developing countries than in industrialized countries. Hence, it is important to study the inflation persistence in developing countries. The present paper investigates the pattern of inflation persistence in China, a developing and transitional economy. Specifically, the paper studies statistically the number of structural breaks in China’s inflation persistence based on the monthly retail price index (MRPI) and the quarterly retail price index (QRPI) inflation series from 1983 to 2011. The findings show that there are five and three structural breaks in the MRPI and QRPI inflation persistence, respectively. The present paper also exposes a high degree of persistence over the whole sample period and a slight decline in the level of the persistence since 1994. Furthermore, the persistence of two inflation series does not change monotonously but with obvious cyclical patterns. Using these derived estimated structural breakpoints, likely causes of the breakpoints in inflation persistence are investigated. Finally, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

This paper aims to identify factors that affect consumers' web-mobile shopping extension behaviors. Drawing on the trust transfer theory, the present study investigates the trust transfer process (including trust in source, trust in target, and relationship between source and target) and its effect on consumers' benefit-sacrifice evaluations and behaviors toward mobile shopping extension. The research model was empirically tested on the data collected from 309 web-shopping users of a famous business-to-consumer retailer in China. The SEM analysis results indicate that trust in web shopping services and perceived integration between web and mobile shopping services positively affect trust in mobile shopping services. The results also demonstrate that the trust transfer process positively affects behaviors toward mobile shopping extension directly and indirectly via a dual mechanism: by enhancing perceived benefit and by reducing perceived risk of mobile shopping services. Purpose – Attracted by tremendous market opportunities of mobile business, many web services providers have started to expand their web services from traditional PC-based environment into the mobile-based environment. However, success in the web services cannot guarantee the success in the mobile services. The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that influence consumer evaluation and use of mobile shopping services in a web-mobile service extension context. Design/methodology/approach – Based on categorization theory, this paper focusses on the role of integration and consistency between web and mobile services. A research model was created and empirically tested on data collected from 298 mobile shopping users in China. Findings – The structural equation modeling analysis indicates that evaluation of source (web service quality) positively affect evaluation of target (perceived mobile service quality and flow in mobile services). The study also found that the relationships between source and target (perceived integration and perceived consistency) play an important role in determining evaluation of the target, which in turn shapes intention to use mobile services. Research limitations/implications – The survey is based on mobile shopping consumers. Caution is required in any effort to generalize the findings to other research contexts. Factors influencing a consumer's extension or adoption decisions in regard to different mobile services may not be the same, or the degree of influence may differ. Continued studies can test and compare our findings in different mobile services contexts. Practical implications – The results of the findings provide specific methods for managing the process of web-mobile service extension. The results also indicate the importance of perceived consistency in shaping consumers’ evaluation of the extended mobile services in practical environments. Originality/value – The present study extends the categorization theory to a multi-channel context and examines mobile services adoption from a cross-environment perspective. It considers evaluation of source, evaluation of target, and the relationships between source and target, which enriches the innovation adoption literature by providing a holistic insight into the evaluation and use of mobile services.

Service quality is extremely important in the Chinese express industry as it affects customer loyalty and satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants that influence the quality of services provided by using mobile devices (mobile services quality) in the Chinese express industry. A survey was used to collect data from customers in China. Analysis of the collected data resulted in six determinants (M1 to M6). M1 addresses empathy, M5 tangibility, and M4 and M6 assurance. M2 covers responsiveness and assurance, and M3 reliability and responsiveness. The findings showed that the Chinese express industry should take these six determinants as a unified set when assessing mobile services quality which will guide businesses wishing to enhance their services. Neglect of any determinant will lead to a drop of quality, and in turn will be detrimental to the overall improvement of service quality in the Chinese express industry.

PurposeThe aim of this study is to identify factors that influence drivers' route choice response to travel time information about both the expressway and local streets provided by variable message signs on arterial roads.Design/methodology/approachA stated preference questionnaire survey was conducted to collect behavioral data. The generalized estimating equations (GEEs) method with a logit link function was used to model driver response and account for correlations within repeated observations from the same respondent. Four GEEs‐based estimations with different working correlation structures were conducted and compared with each other as well as the conventional maximum likelihood estimation.FindingsDriving experiences, expressway delays, causes of delay, and the number of traffic lights on local streets are factors influencing route choice decisions. A new finding is that there exist differences in response behavior among employer‐provided car, taxi and private car drivers. On the modeling aspect, the exchangeable structure was the most appropriate in this study.Research limitations/implicationsThis study indicates the effectiveness and appropriateness of the GEEs method and suggests further examination of GEEs' performance.Practical implicationsThe route choice probability model established by this study will facilitate better investment, design and assessment of dynamic information services in transportation management.Originality/valueThe dynamic information this study concerns has rarely been addressed in the literature. Little literature to date has applied the GEEs method in information response modeling. This study reaches solider conclusions about the GEEs method.

This paper developed a method to assess information security risks in e-healthcare. Specifically, it first developed a static E-Healthcare Information Security Risk (EHISR) model to present thirty-three security risk factors by identifying information security threats and their sources in e-healthcare. Second, a dynamic E-Healthcare Information Flow (EHIF) model was developed to logically link these information risk factors in the EHISR model. Pattern analysis showed that information security risks could be classified into two levels, and versatility analysis showed that the overall security risks for eight information flows were close with a range from 55% to 86%. Third, one quantifiable approach based on a relative-weighted assessment model was developed to demonstrate how to assess the information security risks in e-healthcare. This quantitative security risk measurement establishes a reference point for assessing e-healthcare security risks and assists managers in selecting a reliable information flow infrastructure with a lower security risk level.

People with severe mental illness (SMI) frequently have poor physical health, which can in part be related to a low level of physical activity. The goal of this exploratory study was to examine the efficacy of a group participating in Baduanjin (a type of traditional Chinese exercise) on the health of individuals with SMI and the feasibility/acceptability of using short message service (SMS) reminder strategies to prompt continued exercise during a follow-up period.Participants (N=11) participated in a Baduanjin group session for 8 weeks and then maintained home-based Baduanjin with SMS reminders for another 8 weeks. Physical and psychological tests were administered to participants.Significant improvements were found in balance and processing speed and in some domains of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) after the Baduanjin program. Participants were able to maintain engagement in 80% of the expected practice time during the follow-up period. The acceptability of strategies to support home-based exercise, including SMS reminders, was high. This preliminary study suggested the efficacy of Baduanjin and the feasibility of SMS reminders in maintaining follow-up participation in people with SMI. Future studies using a larger sample size and a control group are needed to confirm the findings.

To determine the differences in user preferences between electronic and mobile commerce in consumer shopping, a 25-item survey concerning usability aspects of the two media was implemented on one hundred and eighteen college e-shoppers with experience in mobile devices. The Mobile Commerce Comparison Survey (MCCS) had four validated comparison factors: human factors-related, interface features, product-, and service-related factor. The comparison concludes that usability issues are perceived to be behind in m-commerce, and that m-commerce should be a shopping medium complementary to classic e-commerce rather than a direct alternative to it. Future studies may include empirical usability experiments for m-commerce tasks.

Recently, we showed that microRNA399s (miR399s) control inorganic phosphate (Pi) homeostasis by regulating the expression of PHO2 encoding a ubiquitin-conjugating E2 enzyme 24. Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants overexpressing miR399 or the pho2 mutant overaccumulate Pi in shoots. The association of Pi translocation and coexpression of miR399s and PHO2 in vascular tissues suggests their involvement in long-distance signaling. In this study, we used reciprocal grafting between wild-type and miR399-overexpressing transgenic plants to dissect the systemic roles of miR399 and PHO2. Arabidopsis rootstocks overexpressing miR399 showed high accumulation of Pi in the wild-type scions because of reduced PHO2 expression in the rootstocks. Although miR399 precursors or expression was not detected, we found a small but substantial amount of mature miR399 in the wild-type rootstocks grafted with transgenic scions, which indicates the movement of miR399 from shoots to roots. Suppression of PHO2 with miR399b or c was less efficient than that with miR399f. Of note, findings in grafted Arabidopsis were also discovered in grafted tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana) plants. The analysis of the pho1 mutant provides additional support for systemic suppression of PHO2 by the movement of miR399 from Pi-depleted shoots to Pi-sufficient roots. We propose that the long-distance movement of miR399s from shoots to roots is crucial to enhance Pi uptake and translocation during the onset of Pi deficiency. Moreover, PHO2 small interfering RNAs mediated by the cleavage of miR399s may function to refine the suppression of PHO2. The regulation of miR399 and PHO2 via long-distance communication in response to Pi deficiency is discussed.

This article investigates the patterns of malicious code attacks based on monthly data of the top 10 virus shares from 1998 to 2005. Three parameters were identified for study, overall pattern of the attack, the number reentries into the top 10 most prevalent attacks, and the maximum percentage share. The dataset was validated by comparing it to an independent dataset that measured the same parameters for a subset of the period of the primary dataset. The effects of malicious code that started before or disappeared outside the collection period were found to not have a significant effect. A multivariate regression analysis showed that the number of entries and the maximum share had a strong relationship with the visible life span. Multivariate cluster analysis was conducted on the reentry parameters and yielded six virus clusters classifications. The high impact viruses, 43 of the 230, are identified and further grouped.
