Abstract

Importance Soy isoflavone supplements are used to treat several chronic diseases, although the data supporting their use are limited. Some data suggest that supplementation with soy isoflavone may be an effective treatment for patients with poor asthma control. Objective To determine whether a soy isoflavone supplement improves asthma control in adolescent and adult patients with poorly controlled disease. Design, Setting, and Participants Multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted between May 2010 and August 2012 at 19 adult and pediatric pulmonary and allergy centers in the American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Centers network. Three hundred eighty-six adults and children aged 12 years or older with symptomatic asthma while taking a controller medicine and low dietary soy intake were randomized, and 345 (89%) completed spirometry at week 24. Interventions Participants were randomly assigned to receive soy isoflavone supplement containing 100 mg of total isoflavones (n=193) or matching placebo (n=193) in 2 divided doses administered daily for 24 weeks. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome measure was change in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV 1 ) at 24 weeks. Secondary outcome measures were symptoms, episodes of poor asthma control, Asthma Control Test score (range, 5-25; higher scores indicate better control), and systemic and airway biomarkers of inflammation. Results Mean changes in prebronchodilator FEV 1 over 24 weeks were 0.03 L (95% CI, −0.01 to 0.08 L) in the placebo group and 0.01 L (95% CI, −0.07 to 0.07 L) in the soy isoflavone group, which were not significantly different ( P = .36). Mean changes in symptom scores on the Asthma Control Test (placebo, 1.98 [95% CI, 1.42-2.54] vs soy isoflavones, 2.20 [95% CI, 1.53-2.87]; positive values indicate a reduction in symptoms), number of episodes of poor asthma control (placebo, 3.3 [95% CI, 2.7-4.1] vs soy isoflavones, 3.0 [95% CI, 2.4-3.7]), and changes in exhaled nitric oxide (placebo, −3.48 ppb [95% CI, −5.99 to −0.97 ppb] vs soy isoflavones, 1.39 ppb [95% CI, −1.73 to 4.51 ppb]) did not significantly improve more with the soy isoflavone supplement than with placebo. Mean plasma genistein level increased from 4.87 ng/mL to 37.67 ng/mL ( P Conclusions and Relevance Among adults and children aged 12 years or older with poorly controlled asthma while taking a controller medication, use of a soy isoflavone supplement, compared with placebo, did not result in improved lung function or clinical outcomes. Abstract

The LIGO interferometers are operating as gravitational wave observatories, with a noise level near an order of magnitude of the goal and the first scientific data recently taken. This data has been analyzed for four different categories of gravitational wave sources; millisecond bursts, inspiralling binary neutron stars, periodic waves from a known pulsar, and stochastic background. Research and development is also underway for the next generation LIGO detector, Advanced LIGO.

Abstract

We report on a search for gravitational waves from binary black hole inspirals in the data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers. The search focused on binary systems with component masses between 3 and 20 solar masses. Optimally oriented binaries with distances up to 1 Mpc could be detected with efficiency of at least 90%. We found no events that could be identified as gravitational waves in the 385.6 hours of data that we searched., 18 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We perform a wide parameter space search for continuous gravitational waves over the whole sky and over a large range of values of the frequency and the first spin-down parameter. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semi-coherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique. We apply this technique to data from the second science run of the LIGO detectors and our final results are all-sky upper limits on the strength of gravitational waves emitted by unknown isolated spinning neutron stars on a set of narrow frequency bands in the range 200-$400 $Hz. The best upper limit on the gravitational wave strain amplitude that we obtain in this frequency range is $4.43\times 10^{-23}$., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. D

Abstract

Data collected by the GEO 600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain method. Both achieve consistent null results, placing new upper limits on the strength of the pulsar’s gravitational wave emission. A model emission mechanism is used to interpret the limits as a constraint on the pulsar’s equatorial ellipticity.

Abstract

For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous direct measurements. Abstract

We present the analysis of between 50 and 100 hrs of coincident interferometric strain data used to search for and establish an upper limit on a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. These data come from the first LIGO science run, during which all three LIGO interferometers were operated over a 2-week period spanning August and September of 2002. The method of cross-correlating the outputs of two interferometers is used for analysis. We describe in detail practical signal processing issues that arise when working with real data, and we establish an observational upper limit on a f^{-3} power spectrum of gravitational waves. Our 90% confidence limit is Omega_0 h_{100}^2 < 23 in the frequency band 40 to 314 Hz, where h_{100} is the Hubble constant in units of 100 km/sec/Mpc and Omega_0 is the gravitational wave energy density per logarithmic frequency interval in units of the closure density. This limit is approximately 10^4 times better than the previous, broadband direct limit using interferometric detectors, and nearly 3 times better than the best narrow-band bar detector limit. As LIGO and other worldwide detectors improve in sensitivity and attain their design goals, the analysis procedures described here should lead to stochastic background sensitivity levels of astrophysical interest., 26 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

Sulfur (n‐type) and zinc (p‐type) doped and undoped InP have been thermally oxidized in the temperature range 400 °C≤T≤600 °C. The Raman scattering and Auger electron spectroscopy techniques show that the doping enhances the formation of the crystalline InPO4 phase and favors the growth of crystalline phosphorus at the oxide/InP interface.

Abstract

In order to achieve optimal performance from a separator, namely product purity and throughput, its essential parameters must be carefully adjusted and their values maintained constant for the duration of the entire run. For production runs lasting hundreds of hours, it is highly desirable to be able to leave the separator unattended while appropriate feedback circuits maintain its parameters at their initial values as set by the operator. These parameters include not only the beam current and detailed ion source characteristics, but also the image position in the lateral and longitudinal directions. Such round-the-clock automatic operation, besides considerably reducing production costs, also significantly improves the product purity and yield, and extends cathode lifetime. The principles underlying the implementation of this procedure and the Soreq separator MEIRA are explained and the results obtained reported.

Abstract

By exploiting the advanced virtual object mode of operation of an electromagnetic isotope separator, isotopic enrichments of over 7000 are obtained in a single run, for a single mass difference at M = 124. At such high enrichments, sparking (i.e. shorting of the source high voltage) at a rate of approximately 5–10 times per hour may be one of the remaining significant contaminating phenomena. The influence of sparking on the attainable isotopic enrichment is assessed by recording the pocket currents and the high voltage as a function of time during discharges and entering the quantitative results into relations connecting the various contributing parameters.
